In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas , it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process . This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities . The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented , and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed . It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred .

This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

A review is given of the nomenclature, sources, imports, statistics, common methods of preparation, and testing of mineral pigments. A description of the Deer Park-Spokane colored-clay district and the laboratory methods of preparation of these colored clays, others, and siennas follows. The mineral pigments were prepared by washing or grinding the original material as received and by calcination of the yellow ocher and brown sienna with and without manganese dioxide to produce red, brown, and black colors. These prepared powders were tested for fineness, oil absorption, and color as compared with well-known brands of commercial pigments. Similar tests were made with several basalt red clays occurring in the neighborhood of Salem, Oreg., and Kalama, Eatonville, and Clay City, Wash. The color particularly was studied, since this property is the most important commercial characteristic of the minerals. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Since the development of the clay industry in the Pacific Northwest, some curiosity and interest have been aroused by the red and yellow clay or ocherouslike material that has often been found associated with the commercial clay deposits. These include the red and yellow "paint pots" near Deer Park and Spokane in eastern Washington, a red clay at Clay City, another close to Eatonville in western Washington, and red basalt earths near Salem, Oreg., and along the Columbia River near Kalama, Wash. Several companies have been organized to produce pigment colors from two of these deposits but have either discontinued or never started operations.

The United States is the world's largest consumer of tin and depends entirely upon foreign imports for its major source of supply. Only a small quantity of tin is produced on the North America continent. The advent of the war in Europe in 1939?brought a threat to our foreign sources of supply, and the Congress took steps to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, and subsequent legislation, the Bureau of' Mines ?and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits. Most of the tin that has been produced in North America came from the Seward Peninsula, Alaska.

The purpose of this study was to determine mine workers' state of fie-fighting preparedness and the technology being used to detect and respond to underground coal mine fires. To investigate this problem, 214 underground coal miners were interviewed by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers. Frequency distributions of workers' responses are presented in this report, along with segments of narrative accounts, to profile miners' fire-fighting capabilities. The data indicated that much variability exists from mine to mine and that there are several important changes operators may undertake in order to make miners better prepared to deal with fire underground: select appropriate sensors, establish and test a warning and communication protocol, construct a system capable of delivering hundreds of gallons of water per minute for sustained periods, institute formal fire preparedness audits, develop case studies of events that occur at an operation to use as teaching and assessment tools, and provide structured practice that can be incorporated into fire drills.

"INTRODUCTION The San Antonio Canyon prospect was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943 and again in October 1944. In July 1944, the United States Geological Survey mapped the prospect and submitted a report 4/ recommending core drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The drilling project, which was supervised by the author, was started on January 10 and completed on May 10, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The deformation modulus of coal mine pillars theoretically can be reduced by drilling holes in advance of the mining face. This reduction of modulus along the edge of the pillar has the effect of decreasing the stress concentration in the roof; control of roof caving is thereby predicted. Initial field work indicated that a high horizontal stress field existed at the field test site: Subsequent field work was undertaken to confirm the high horizontal stress field and to attempt to relieve the horizontal stress in the immediate roof. A method of softening pillars in conjunction with normal mining activity was developed. Instruments to measure horizontal roof strain, roof parting, roof tilt at the rib, and changes in vertical and horizontal stress in the roof and in the coal were used. These instruments were installed in both softened and unsoftened entries and in locations to indicate the effect of vertical slots in the roof. Significant stress reduction due to pillar softening was indicated, but the effect of this reduction on roof stability was not established. The vertical roof slots relieved the horizontal stress in the immediate roof very effectively, and observations of roof conditions indicated that the slots definitely improved roof stability.

Materials handled at metal and non-metal mines in the United States increased 10 percent compared with those of 1965 as a result of expansions in output at existing mines and development of others to meet increasing demands for mineral products. The tonnage of commercial materials mined or quarried increased as did the quantity of waste handled. Crude material from which metal or nonmetal products were derived comprised 71 percent (75 percent in 1964) of the total materials handled. Great strides were made in mining technology and there were indications that, in the future, earth moving by the mining industry will involve materials-handling systems of increasing size and complexity. Materials Handled.-Output of ore and waste at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries in the United States in 1966 totaled 3,518 million tons (3.213 million tons in 1965). The quantity of materials handled has increased at an average annual rate of 5 percent since 1962. Ore production increased 4 percent over that of 1965, also comparable to the average annual rate of increase in the last 5 years. Waste removal in 1966 increased 25 percent over that of the previous year.

This circular is one of a series of reports on coal mining methods and cost s which are being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for the purpose of making available to those interested in the industry a knowledge of the mining methods employed in mines where mechanical and hand loading is practiced and the cost data on the several operations pertaining to the removal of coal from the working faces and its transportation to the tipple for loading into railroad cars. The methods employed are influenced by the natural local conditions with respect to the thickness and character of the coal beds and the overlying strata, the means employed for roof support and its control, and the disadvantages incident to the development of mines in thin coal beds.

Cement kiln dust (CKD) is a waste product generated at the rate of 4 to 12 million tons per year in the United States. The dust has considerable resource potential as a neutralizer for coal mine waste effluents and as a lime substitute in the agriculture and construction industries. However, little information has been published on the composition and characteristics of CKD, and a concern arose over the potential environmental effects of the waste when an analysis of a single sample from West Germany revealed lead and zinc concentrations of 5,620 µg/g and 16,200 µg/g, respectively. This report describes the construction and calibration of two ice calorimeters and includes results of high-temperature heat-content measurements, made by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on rubidium fluoride, hafnium tetrafluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide. The heats and entropies of fusion of rubidium fluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide have been calculated at their respective melting points using equations derived from the experimental heat-content data. Hafnium tetrafluoride did not melt within the range of temperatures investigated. Heat and entropy of transition of cesium chloride from the alpha to the beta form were also determined. INTRODUCTION Free-energy data usually afford the cheapest and quickest means of determining the feasibility of experimentally untested reactions. For known reactions, free-energy data show the variation of the equilibrium constant with temperature and make it possible to calculate, without experiment, the maximum ratio of product to raw material for a given chemical process.

Calcium chloride is a conspicuous example of a former waste product that has found a place for itself in the onward march of civilization. Formerly considered a troublesome constituent of the effluent sewage of many chemical manufacturing plants and salt works, it has now become a commercial product of substantial importance, with sales aggregating almost six million dollars in 1929. The point has not yet been reached where it would seem profitable to undertake large-scale production of calcium chloride as a main product, but as a byproduct it has become an item that warrants serious consideration by all who are in a position to recover it at sufficiently low cost. The largely increased demand for bromine and for certain magnesium salts, which are likewise potential byproducts associated with calcium chloride in most salt-works bitterns (and brines generally), adds further impetus to commercial research directed toward the fuller utilization of the natural saline resources of the United States.

"INTRODUCTION Information relative to the ignition temperatures of acetylene and acetylene-air mixtures has become of particular interest recently due to a number of explosions that have occurred in 500-pound, double-rated, medium-pressure acetylene generators in shipyards on the West coast. Various suggestions have been made as to the causes of these explosions prominent among which has been that air finds its way into the acetylene generators during abnormal operation or that air remains in the carbide hopper of the generator following the purging and charging operations.This raises the question as to how and to what extent the presence of small percentages of air in acetylene affects the ease of ignition of such mixtures at the various operating pressures of the acetylene generators. The range of operating pressures in the 500-pound, double-rated generators involved in the explosions may vary from below atmospheric to 15 pounds gage.The present report gives the results of an investigation made to determine the effects of pressure on the ignition temperature of pure acetylene and of acetylene containing varying percentages of air:EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus A preliminary investigation showed that a heated quartz surface gave lower ignition temperatures than other material tested.A ""hot-spot"" method of ignition was found desirable in the case of the acetylene mixtures since the violence of the explosions was reduced by keeping most of the test mixtures at room temperature. Explosive violence was reduced further by using an ignition tube 17 mm. or less in diameter."

The possibility of cheap electric power for a number of mining areas in this country has suggested to many the idea of electric smelting of nonferrous ores in small units at or near the mines. The electric smelting of nonferrous ores was tested fairly thoroughly 20 years ago by United States Bureau of Mines and by others, and the fact that it did not achieve continuing workable success in any instance is sufficient proof that it offered no advantages at that time.

Electric-furnace smelting for simultaneous recovery of zinc spelter and lead bullion from complex lead-zinc sinter was investigated. Reduction of lead and zinc was satisfactory. Condensation of lead and zinc vapor to pyrophoric metal powder in a water-cooled, shock-condensing system produced excellent recoveries. Metal-splash condensation to produce zinc spelter was unsatisfactory. Special smelting experiments differentiated the effects of several smelting parameters on zinc metal recovery. The principal cause for unsatisfactory zinc metal recovery was transfer of iron to the condenser and subsequent degradation of zinc in a mixture composed of lead and an iron-zinc intermetallic compound. Limitations of the process were determined. Slag-resistance open-bath electric smelting of complex lead-zinc sinter is not considered feasible.

A fire location computational model was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The model can determine all the possible paths in a mine that smoke can travel from a fixed fire source to a smoke detector. The associated FORTRAN computer program can be utilized to determine the minimum travel time from a source fire to a smoke detector. The difference in travel time from an isolated fire source to two or more detectors can be used to isolate those airways in which the source fire is located.

During 1928 questionnaires covering the calendar year 1927 were sent to over 1700 quarries: producing stone for purposes other thaw cutting to dimension. These inclined producers of stone for limn burning; cement manufacture, rip rag, and crushed stone. The various rinds of stone represented were limestone, trap rock, sandstone, granite, and marble. Replies received from limestone producers prior to November, 1928, were compiled into tables and published in February, 1925, as a preliminary report (Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 2911).

Gas analysis is of great practical value to the combustion engineer as a guide in the proper deli and operation of power and heating plants. The automotive industry, however, has made little use of gas analysis in the design and construction of engines. Tests4 made by the Bureau of Mines have shorn that for the average motor vehicle approximately 30 per cent of the heat value of the gasoline passes out in the exhaust as incomplete-combustion products. The tendency at present is to pay more attention to ease and flexibility of operation than to efficiency of combustion. However, neither condition can be fully realized except where each cylinder gets a mixture of the same composition - that is, when certain cylinders do not "load up" with gas at the expense of the others. When this occurs, due to some of the cylinders having too rich a mixture while in others it is too lean, it is impossible to get efficient combustion from the fuel used. Gas analysis enables the engineer to determine the quality of the mixture fed to the different cylinders with a high degree of precision. Briefly, the method consists in making an analysis of the exhaust gas from each cylinder while the engine is in operation.

ELECTRIC smelting tests were conducted at the Northwest Electro-development Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., to develop a feasible process for producing silicomanganese from siliceous manganiferous material. The Jackson County, Oreg., material used was massive and contained rhodonite as the most abundant mineral. Both raw and beneficiated materials were tested; various proportions and types of fluxes and reductants were used to make up the furnace charges. The silicomanganese product was used successfully in manufacturing various steels at industrial plants. The manganese content of the samples ranged from 23 to 28 percent; silica plus alumina content was as high as 55 percent-about four times the maximum specification for Metallurgical-grade ore. Sink-float laboratory tests indicated that the manganiferous material was amenable to beneficiation. Over 2 tons of rhodonite concentrate was prepared for smelting tests in a sink-float operation. Only the minus-3/4-inch, plus-8-mesh fraction was fed to a heavy-medium cone; over 97 percent of the manganese was recovered in the sink product, which contained 32.4 percent manganese and 44 percent silica plus alumina. About 25 percent of the silica was removed in the float product.
