The Bureau of Mines has investigated the surface charge of amphibole asbestos fibers and nonasbestiform cleavage fragments, as part of the Bureau's fundamental studies to provide new knowledge on the physical and chemical properties of the amphibole minerals. Microelectrophoresis was used to measure the electrophoretic mobilities, in water, of particles from six asbesti-from amphiboles and seven nonasbestiform amphiboles over the pH range of 5 through 9. The particles generally ranged in size from 2 to 5 µm wide by 10 to 30 µm long. The isoelectric point was determined for four of the minerals, and values were found to be between pH 3.5 and pH 5. The minerals studied had zeta potentials that generally ranged from -25 to -so mv in neutral solution. Attachment of colloidal positively charged AgI was also studied as a means of determining surface charge. Scanning electron microscopy of amphibole particles that had been in contact with aqueous AgI showed equal attachment of AgI to asbestos fibers and to cleavage fragments; the extent of AgI coating was the same for both. The electrophoretic mobilities of asbestos fibers were essentially the same as those of elongated cleavage fragments of the same aspect ratio (particle length divided by width). Blocky particles from both asbestiform and nonasbestiform specimens had lower mobilities.

A small, annular-retort gasifier having a nominal capacity of 40 pounds of lignite per hour was designed and constructed at the Lignite Experiment Station, Grand Forks, N. Dak. The purpose of the investigation was to increase the capacity of an annular-retort gasifier by better temperature distribution in the heating chamber (adjacent to the annulus) and by supplemental internal heating with controlled amounts of air. Correct control of air admission should yield crude ammonia-synthesis gas having a (H2+CO)-N2 ratio of 3. Dakota Star stoker-size lignite was used during the exploratory experimental program. The effects of temperature level and distribution in the heating chamber and of addition of air to the reactor were investigated. Hydrogen - carbon monoxide ratios ranged from 1.9 to 2.5, and (H2+C0)-N2 ratios were as low as 2.9. Hourly gas production ranged from 970 to 2,580 cu. ft., or 62.0 to 164 cu. ft. per sq. ft. of heated surface, or 350 to 940 cu. ft. per cu. ft. of reactor volume. Data from the small gasifier could be readily correlated with those previously obtained in the commercial-scale unit under comparable experimental conditions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an in-house facility to evaluate selected effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) levels experienced by underground mobile equipment operators, Vertical vibration data were collected from a coal haulage vehicle via a uniaxial accelerometer attached to the machine frame under the operator&apos;s seat. Data were analyzed and processed so a computer-controlled platform could approximate the vibration signals. Eight men (35.5 yr 2 6.5 SD) participated in a pilot study to evaluate the effects of shock and kBV on heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and subjective discomfort. Subjects were exposed to vibration for 30-min periods while seated in a typical seat (backrest angle at 90° or 130°) &apos;that was plain steel or modified with 2 in foam padding. Subjects repeated the same protocol on a separate day, without the vibration. Results indicated the vibration significantly increased the HR (Q< 0.01), systolic BP, mean BP, the number of times subjects reported discomfort, and overall subjective discomfort rating (pc 0.85). When seated in the steel seat, the overall discomfort rating (E< 0,081) ad the number of times discomfort was reported (p< 0.05) increased significantly. Seatback angle had no significant effect on any of the dependent measures.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI)· by NAD(P)H. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O 2) to NAD(P)H-Cr(VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) signal and generates hydroxyl (·OH) radicals (as detected via spin trapping), suggesting that Cr(V) reacts with H2O 2 to generate the ·OH radicals. Reaction between H2O 2 and a Cr(V)·glutathione complex, and between H2O 2 and several Cr(V)-carboxylato complexes also produces ·OH radicals. These results suggest that Cr(V) complexes catalyze the generation of ·OH radicals from H2O 2, and that ·OH radicals might play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) cytotoxicity. KEY WORDS: ESR. spin trapping, Cr(VI) reduction, Cr(V), hydrogen peroxide, free radicals.INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports an ESR spin trapping detection of hydroxyl ( OH) radicals.in reactions between some Cr(V) complexes containing biologically important ligands and hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2 ). This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, the reaction· mechanism is not yet clear. 1 Mutagencity has been well documented for Cr(VI) via various bacterial assays, while Cr(III) has been shown not to be mutagenic.2 • 3 Since it has been reported that compounds containing Cr(VI) do not react with isolated DNA,4 the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular constituents has been thought to be important in the mechanism of Cr(VI) induced DNA alteration.1·4 • 5 For cellular systems earlier studies include those on the reduction of C~(VI) by microsomes,6-8 rat liver DT-diaphorase,9 and aldehyde oxidase. 10 Regarding the reduction mechanism, Jennette used ESR spectroscopy to show that a long-lived Cr(V) complex is formed as an intermediate in the microsomal reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of NADPH.8 She postulated that Cr(V) is the ""ultimate"" carcinogenic form of chromium compounds. This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions.11 - 19 More recently, however, it has been suggested that oxygen-derived radicals generated during the Cr(VI) reduction are the species responsible for the DNA alteration.20.2• To the best of our knowledge, however, no information is available on the generation of such radicals in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions, except some preliminary results on the glutathionyl (GS·) radical formation in the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH). 11 - 19 We, therefore, undertook a systematic investigation of the reaction of Cr(VI) with NAD(P)H, GSH, ix-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and H2O 2 • NADPH was chosen as a model reductant because of its ubiquitous existence inside the cells, its critical role in the enzymatic Cr(VI) reduction,1·6-9 its representation of important cellular Cr(VI) reductants, and its ability to reduce other metal ions.22 GSH was chosen as another model Cr(VI) reductant because GSH also exists inside cells, it represents another important category of cellular Cr(VI) reductants, the thiols, and it also plays an important role in the Cr(VI) toxicity .1• 1 ""- 19.i3.i4 For further clarification, we also studied the reaction of Cr(VI) with several '1'.-hydroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of H2O 2 since these acids are definitively known to reduce Cr(VJ) to form stable, isolable Cr(V).25 .2 6 The results obtained indicate that Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VJ) by cellular reductants, react with H2 O 2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might be the initiators of primary events in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity."

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. Cement copper was flash roasted in a vertical tube furnace to convert the copper to acid-soluble oxides as part of a postulated process for refining cement copper by oxidation roasting, acid leaching, and electrowinning. The results of the study showed that the oxidation was a linear function of oxygen concentration between 0 and 20 percent, but above 20 percent oxygen there was no further increase in oxidation. Therefore, air was the optimum oxidizing atmosphere in this flash roasting system. The oxidation followed a parabolic rate law as the roasting temperature was increased from 400° to 800° C. Extrapolation of the data, based on the parabolic law, indicated that at 400°, 500°,600°,700°, and 800° C, the roasting times required for complete conversion to soluble oxides were 75, 37, 21, 7.7, and 4.6 seconds, respectively. Cyclic-roasting test results did not substantiate the predictions obtained through data extrapolation.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from South Carolina to determine the possibility of recovering high-quality feldspar and glass sand. Three flotation systems were used for removal of the iron-bearing biotite: Two employed an alkaline anionic-cationic circuit and the third employed an acid cationic circuit. Commercial-grade products were obtained when the remaining biotite was magnetically removed from the feldspar and quartz concentrates. Continuous flotation processing yielded a feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.60 Na20, 5.60 K20, and 2.25 Ca0, with recoveries of 75.3, 66.6, and 72.6 percent, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high quality glass sand containing 98.0 percent Si02 and 0.025 percent Fe203; about 60 percent of the quartz was recovered.

"In at least three out of every four working faces in metal mines there is no attempt made to cause air circulation other than by use of compressed air, and in at least nine cases out of ten the compressed air is released merely by opening, or partly opening, the valve and allowing the compressed air to escape through open air hose used to convey the compressed air to the drilling machines. Usually no blowers are in use during periods of drilling, as the exhaust from the drill provides cool, comparatively fresh air for the driller; however, in some instances, the compressed-air line is provided with a tea connection, which permits taking air for the drill from one side of the tee, and air for ventilation through a separate hose used as a blower, simultaneously with drilling.Table 1 contains temperature and humidity data as to compressed-air blowers from open end of air hose at 36 working places in eleven metal mines of four States, embracing the mining of gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc ores, and at horizons ranging from 500 feet below the surface to as low as 4900 feet.It is noticed that the ordinary air surrounding the worker at the face gives an average wet bulb temperature of 81.7° F. for the 36 working faces, with 84.7° F. dry bulb and 87.2 per cent relative humidity. The average wet bulb tem¬perature of 36 readings at these working faces of compressed air at the end of the,hose as the air issues from the hose was 67.4° F., or 14.3 degrees lower than the average wet bulb readings of the air of the working places; however, the average dry bulb temperature of the 36 readings of compressed air as it issued from the end of the hose was 79.7° F., or only 5 degrees less than that of the general air (84.7°); the relative humidity was 51.1 per cent as against 87.2 per cent for the surrounding air. Readings were taken in five raises, seven crosscuts, ten drifts and 14 stopes.It will be noted that the velocity or movement of the general atmosphere at each of the entire 36 working faces, was found to be practically imperceptible; this might readily be inferred since compressed air is rarely used on blowers if there is adequate circulation of the general air of the place. Where rook temperatures could be obtained readily, they are shown; it is noticeable that the dry bulb temperature of the air of the working place varies little from the rock temperature, and that the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issues from end of air hose varies only a few degrees from the temperature of the surrounding rock; in some instances the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issued from the end of the air hose was higher than the rock temperature or the dry bulb temperature of the surrounding air."

Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantitieS', a series . of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of tT. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for exaIp.ple, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New R~ver (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a fu11 account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included. The tests of New River coal, in cooperation with the Navy Department, were undertaken to determine the advantage to be gained by storing coal under water, and particularly under salt water. Small lots were used in order to make the tests of maximum severity, and parallel experiments were made with run-of-mine and crushed coal under one-fourth inch size. All of the small lots tested under the different conditions (except those tested near Key West, Fla.) were taken as representative portions from one large original lot. The tests of Pocahontas coal, which, like the New River, is semibituminous, were undertaken chiefly to determine th.e effect of the tropical conditions in Panama. They were made on an outdoor pile of 100 tons of run-of-mine coal. Pittsburgh gas coal, a high-volatile, bituminous type used at gas and by-product coke works, was exposed for test at Ann Arbor, Mich., in cooperation with the University of Michigan. The university agreed to make tests at successive intervals of storage to determine, in its illuminating-gas experiment station, the yields of gas and byproducts from the coal. The coal, screened lump, was stored in about 4-ton lots out of doors in open bins. Subbituminous coal, which is mined in Colorado, Wyoming, and other States, and is known also as "black lignite," is commonly supposed to deteriorate rapidly in storage, especially by "slacking" or crumbling of the lumps. The tests herein described were undertaken at Sheridan, Wyo., in cooperation with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co., in order to determine the extent of this slacking and the accompanying loss of heat value. The tests were in open bins holding 4 to 12 tons.

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1938, but the total capacity to process crude oil increased materially. This information was obtained in connection with the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1, 1939. In spite of the addition of a half dozen plants in Illinois and the inclusion in this year's list of several more "pot-stills" in Montana, the total number of plants, and inactive, declined from 551 on January 1, 1938, to 538 on January 1, 1939. was entirely in shut-down plants, as the number of operating plants rose from both active The decline 431 to 435. Yost of the plants dismantled were situated in Wyoming and Texas, parts or several from the latter being transported to Illinois. About 10 more East Texas refineries were dismantled in 1938, leaving about 15 plants in the field, only 8 of which were operating on January 1, 1939. Although the total completed capacity increased from 4,351,151 barrels on January l, 1938, to 4,508,555 barrels on January l, 1939, the operating capacity declined, and the inactive capacity increased about 50 percent, or from 380,955 to 574,770 barrels. These shifts in capacities reflect the comparative slump in the refining industry in 1938 after the prosperous year 1937. Daily average crude runs in 1938 were 3,192,000 barrels, from which it may be figured that the operating ratio for the active units was about 81 percent of crude and for all completed equipment 74 percent. The highest daily throughput in 1938 was about 3,400,000 barrels, at which time the reserve capacity represented in the active equipment was at least 500,000 barrels, in addition to about that much capacity shutdown. In an emergency, much more reliance could be placed on the reserve capacity of the active equipment, as much of the shut-down capacity is obsolete at present specifications and prices. Regarding obsolescence, the refiners reported 418,165 barrels of their idle capacity in good condition on January l, 1939 and 156,605 barrels in poor condition. However, it is probable that the former reflects an optimistic viewpoint. Refinery activity, as represented by new construction and dismantling, declined materially in 1938. The new capacity added in 1938 was 378,350 barrels compared with 394,680 barrels in 1937. Probably 1939 will see a much larger decline, as the new capacity under construction on January 1, 1939, totaled only 142,250 barrels compared with 283,020 barrels the preceding year. A series of steel heats, one low-alloy and nine carbon, was made by the Bureau of Mines in a 1-ton arc furnace from ferrous scrap from incinerated refuse, steel cans, and detinned steel cans, both alone and blended with heavy-melting scrap. Two additional control heats, one of carbon steel and one of low-alloy steel, were made from electric furnace heavy-melting scrap to pro-vide comparative data. The steel products were cast into two 4-by 4-inch nominal 50-pound ingots; in most heats, an 8-by 8-inch nominal 7S0-pound ingot was also obtained. Tests of these ingots indicated that reinforcing bars of acceptable quality can be made from urban refuse components such as steel cans.

In 1960 over 93 percent of the coal cleaned mechanically in the United States was cleaned in processes that utilized water or dense-medium suspensions of fine solids in water. Thus, in the process of removing deleterious ash-forming and sulfur-bearing minerals, another deleterious substance--water-- is added to the coal. The subsequent removal of the water from the coal, and the concomitant recovery of the coal from the water, is not troublesome in the sizes coarser than 1/4-inch. In the finer sizes, however, it is a difficult procedure that often costs more than the original washing operation. Because of the importance of liquid-solids separation in coal preparation, the Bureau of Mines has a continuing program of research in this field. The objective is to make available information on the performance characteristics of various types of equipment available for liquid-solids separations, thus promoting the wise selection of equipment for specific applications, and, thereby, more effective processing of coal. Results of work on flocculation as an aid to filtration5 and the sieve bend screen6 have been published. The present investigation of the screw-type classifier operating in combination with the cyclone was undertaken primarily because such classifiers are comparatively new to coal preparation and information on their performance is not available. The cyclone has become well-known since its introduction in this country by the Bureau of Mines in 1948.7 Use of the cyclone in conjunction with the screw-type classifier represents an attempt to provide the maximum recovery of solids at minimum moisture content.

This report covers a phase of an extraction project carried out as part of a research program on rare-earth technology. The current project--the production of pure cerium compounds--is an intermediate step between ore processing and metal reduction. In this connection, a study on a separatory-funne1 scale was made on nonreducing extractants for recovering cerium (IV) from tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and of methods for recovering the cerium nitrate from the strip solution. Dilute sulfuric acid was found to be 100 percent effective in stripping cerium (IV). Several precipitants were effective in recovering the cerium from the strip solution, and ethanol was especially promising. A scaled-up investigation was made into the use of spray-tower type equipment to perform the function of extracting, washing, and stripping. This equipment, referred to as the pressure-bubbler, utilized the system developed on the separatory-funnel scale. Feed solutions were prepared from a bastnasite concentrate by two techniques. Of these, the sulfated bastnasite solution was most successful, resulting in 86-percent recovery of the cerium at 99.7+-percent purity.

The expansion of city street laving which characterized the ten years ended December 31, 1929, according to a survey of 201 representative cities, made by the bureau of Mines, reached it climax in 1927, with decreases reported for 1928 and 1929. The upward trend, followed by a decline, was general in cities of all sizes included in this study, but was most pronounced in cities of 40,000 to 100,600 inhabitant and in the Northeastern, Southeastern, and Southwestern States. In the North-Central States the trend of paving; was downward from 1925 to 1929; in the Pacific, and Rocky Mountain States it was generally upward. Over the nation as a whole, bituminous types of paving continued to lead, furnishing two-thirds of the total street pavement laid in the 201 cities from 1925 to 1929. The actual yardage of bituminous pavement laid in these cities, however, was 3.8 per cent less in 1923-than in 1925, and the ratio of bituminous pavement to the total pavement t dropped from 70.4 per cent in 1925 to 62.1 per cent in 1928, rising to 65.1 per cent in 1929. The area paved with Portland-cement concrete amounted to only one-fourth of the total, pavement laid in these cities from 1925. to 1923., but the yardage of Portland-cement pavement increased by half during the period, and its share in the total pavement grew from 19.3 per cent in 1925 to 30.0 per cent in 1928, declining to 29.5 per cent in 1929. Brick, block, and stone pavements, which constituted the remaining one-twelfth of the total pavement laid in the 201 cities, decreased one-third in yardage, and declined in relative importance from 10.3 per cent in 1925 to 6.6 per cent in 1929.

In 2001, a total of 2,144 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.7% of all mining operations. • Bituminous mines comprised 92.0% (n=1,972) and anthracite mines 8.0% (n=172) of coal mining operations. • More than 71% of coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.5%), West Virginia (21.3%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

Field measurements utilizing a seat pad accelerometer were made on 61 surface coal mining machines in order to quantify the vibration levels experienced by the operators. Those data were combined with information on the statistics of the operating times of those machines in order to compare the operator&apos;s vibration exposure to the criteria in ISO 2631, ?A Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole Body Vibration.? The comparison showed that about ha]f of all surface coal mining machine operators can be expected to be exposed to vibration exceeding the fatigue decreased proficiency criterion, whereas only on the order of 15% would be expected to experience vibration exceeding the exposure limit. Detailed exposure statistics are presented and the implications of the results are discussed.

The very modest-sized mineral industry of Afghanistan was burdened for another year with problems of internal strife occassioned by the presence of Soviet armed forces. Despite this, production of the few traditional commodities continued, and the mineral industry moved to develop additional mines and plants for both traditional and new products with considerable technical and construction assistance from the U.S.S.R. Among the limited range of mineral commodities for which production was reported, there were no startling changes between 1984 and 1985. Production of both coal and natural gas advanced only slightly, despite substantially higher 5-year plan goals, and cement output was down marginally. Probably the most significant development in 1985 was the Possibility that mine and/or smelter production of copper was initiated during the year.

An accurate and reproducible procedure was developed using the gas-liquid chromatograph to quantitatively measure oleic acid on flotation products and in flotation water phases. The method comprised extraction of the oleic acid from the mineral surfaces with alcoholic NaOH, esterification of the extracted oleate, and chromatography of the methyl ester with an internal standard. Quantitative analysis of oleic acid on flotation products from test tube and bench-scale flotation tests with pure minerals and with natural ores proved the applicability of the method on a variety of minerals. The accountability of oleic acid added was 100 percent, ±5 percent.

"INTRODUCTION Determination of the thermodynamic properties of metallurgically important compounds of chromium has been one of the activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines. Earlier reports have dealt with the entropies 4/ 5/ of chromium, chromic oxide, and chromous and chromic chlorides, with the thermodynamic properties of the chlorides of chromium, 6/ and wits the thermodynamic properties of the carbides and oxide of chromium. 7/ Evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of chromite, FeO.Cr2O3, is desirable, as this material in impure form constitutes the only natural source of chromium of any consequence.Two general methods are available for directly determining heats of formation - (1) measurement of heats of combustion and (2) measurement of heats of solution. Neither of these methods is directly applicable at present to ferrous chromite, which accounts for the lack of previous data. Combustion of a stoichiometrical mixture of iron and chromium under conditions prevailing in a calorimetric bomb yields a mixture of iron and chromium oxides rather than chromite. None of the usual calorimetric solution media dissolve chromite at temperatures low enough for solution calorimetry. Sulfuric acid and an oxidizing agent, such as MnO2 or CrO3, are known to dissolve chromite, but the possible calorimetric use of t is medium would require long preliminary investigation. Consequently, recourse must be taken to some indirect method. This experiment, one of a series on underground gasification of coal, was an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of hydraulic fracturing as a means of increasing the air acceptance of a coalbed to permit introducing combustion air and removing product gases. Specific objectives of the investigation included: (1) Fracturing a coalbed; (2) determining the distance the coal was physically affected; (3) ascertaining the effect of the fracture on air acceptance of the coalbed; and (4) gasifying the coal. The coal was fractured with a fluid consisting of 15,000 lb. of sand mixed with 10,000 gal. of fuel oil and 5,000 gal. of kerosine, injected at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g. and rates up to 425 g.p.m. The oil served as the fracturing medium, and the sand as a propping agent to hold the fracture open. From the fracture point, (the place in the bed where the fluid was injected), the fracture extended 200 ft. or more along the face cleats, somewhat less along the butt. cleats, and was confined to the coalbed. At the fracture point, the bed accepted about 500 std. c.f.m. of air, which was an etghtyfold increase. Fracture effects were extensive, as airflow was noted from old mine workings and outcrops 600 to 800 ft. from the fracture point. It is probable the actual fracture was much less than 600 ft. and that normal coalbed permeability beyond the fracture limits was responsible for this flow. This indicated that effects of the fracture extended beyond the area of coal physically affected. Although no attempt was made to gasify coal more than 200 ft. away, these effects plus the natural permeability of the bed likely would permit combustion beyond the outer limit of the fracture. As these experiments continued for more than 2 years, and greater air acceptance due to the fracture was observed at the beginning of each test, it is apparent that the effects of the fracturing persist for a considerable time.
