This report describes the redesign, development and field demonstration of a remote shotcrete lining system, capable of operating in shafts and mines from 8 to 16 feet in diameter at depths up to 1000 feet. The original contractural scope of work outlining problems and remedial measures associated with a previous unit proved inadequate. Significant additional effort was necessary in order to fulfill the project objectives of producing a functionally reliable remote shotcrete lining system. Included with the engineering and technical description of the system, is a comprehensive technology package. Included with this material is ancillary equipment, materials selection procedures, mix-design data, quality control and assurance program, selection and training of personnel and the organizational aspects required to operate the entire system. The report concludes with details of a successfully completed borehole lining operation at the Nevada Test Site. An irregular 104 inch diameter borehole was lined at a rate of 4.8 feet per hour and 20 feet per hour respectively for 8-9 inch and a 2 to 3 inch shotcrete thickness.

The apparatus described was developed for determining the kinetics of gas - solid reactions at high temperatures by measuring the volume of gas consumed with respect to time . This apparatus consists essentially of a horizontal precision- bore glass tube connecting a small reaction chamber in a furnace to a large constant - temperature reservoir . A drop of mercury in the tube separates the two sides of the system and serves as an indicator that moves at a speed proportional to the rate of gas consumption . The sensitivity of the apparatus depends inversely on both the density of the gas in the system and the cross - sectional area of the tube ; with a tube having an area of 0.079 cm² , the sensitivity for oxygen at 308 ° K and 0.5 atm is 20 cm/mg . The reproducibility of data with the volumetric apparatus is good .

Advertisements and articles in technical and trade journals announce the approach of a new age, in which plastics, light metals, laminated wood, and numerous other products or byproducts will be used in the construction of automobiles, airplanes, and furniture and equipment used in our factories, offices, and homes. Undoubtedly, after the war there will be many such developments which will introduce new manufacturing methods and new hazards to challenge the safety engineer. Already we know, from experience in laboratories and pilot plants where these new products are being tested, that there will be many fire and explosion hazards to be overcome. The danger of dust explosions may be one of the principal hazards, because thetic resins and other materials used in the plastics industry, as well as metal powders, wood dust, and other finely divided substances, are capable of forming explosive mixtures in air. Heavy losses of life and property have been caused by dust explosions in flour and feed mills, starch factories, and grain elevators, and it will be well to consider the possibilities that such losses may occur in any new industry and to provide all possible safeguards against hazards. Fortunately, we have learned something about the behavior of dust explosions and know something about the ease of ignition, limits of Explosive concentration, end pressure developed. Our efforts should now be directed toward the application of this knowledge in the development of safe operating practices.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of removing heavy metals from mineral-process waste streams by precipitation with lignochemicals and humic acids. Lignochemicals are by products from the paper industry, while humic acids are obtained by caustic treatment of peat, subbituminous coal, and lignite. These high-molecular-weight organic materials have many functional groups, which can coordinate and form innercomplex salts with heavy metals that are crystalline precipitates. Filtering of a humic-acid-or lignochemical-treated solution or waste stream containing these precipitates removes the heavy metal sequstrates. Tests were conducted with two lignochemical samples, three humic acid samples, lime (CaO), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in which increasing amounts of these additives were reacted with 50 mL of solution containing Fe3+ , Al3+, Cr3+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and Hg1+. At the appropriate pH, greater than 90-and 99-pct removal was achieved for these 11 heavy metal ions from the 10-and lOO-ppm solutions, respectively, using lignochemicals and humic acids. Removal efficienC)' with these organic materials is better than that with CaO, especially for the more toxic ions, Hg1+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. Unlike the precipitates formed with NaOH or CaO, those with lignochemicals and humic acids are compact and noncolloidal. The volume of their sludge is sharply lower than that of the finely dispersed lime or soda precipitates; thus, their removal in settling tanks or by simple filtration is enhanced.

The Bureau of Mines conducted groove cutting experiments in marble, lime-stone, granite, and quartzite with a 7-inch disk cutter under a normal thrust of 7,000 lb. The values of muck weight per unit length, specific energy, cutting coefficient, and groove depth for each of these rocks were determined for groove spacings ranging from 0.1 to 4 inches, and from these results the values of optimum and critical spacing were computed" The results indicate that compressive strength may be used to predict some of the cutting characteristics of the independent grooves. Considering all the cutting characteristics, particularly those for the interacting grooves, Shore hardness, coefficient of rock strength, and torsional velocity correlate with cutting characteristics better than do other physical properties. Some of the field applications of the principles established in this report are identified.

As part of a project to develop refractory metal alloys suitable for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation-hardening techniques to columbium and tantalum alloys. Thirty-three alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, strength, and oxidation resistance. Three alloys had tensile strengths near 40,000 psi at 1,200° C: Cb-1N-5W-5V-10Hf (No.4), Cb-15Hf-5W-0.5B (No. 31), and Cb-15Hf-SW-IB (No. 32). Oxidation resistance of the high-strength alloys was good. Alloy4 gained only 34 mg/cm2 at 1,200° C, and 21 mg/cm2 at 1,000° C in 2 hours. Hot forming was done without any protection from oxidation.

Over 5 million lb of chromium, 1 million lb of nickel, and 90,000 lb of molybdenum are lost annually in the dusts generated in the production of stain-less steel. Additional losses of these metals in the form of mill scale and grinding swarf may be double the dust losses. This Bureau of Mines report describes a process for recovering these and other metals in the form of an alloy steel suitable for recycling. Zinc and lead, when present in the wastes, are recovered as byproducts in the form of oxide fumes. The laboratory-scale process (10-to 25-lb charges) recovers up to 95 pct of the chromium, 100 pct of the nickel, and 100 pct of the iron. The resultant alloy contains from 10 to 20 pct chromium, 6 to 12 pct nickel, and 55 to 65 pct iron, with lesser amounts of molybdenum and manganese. The alloy is essentially free of zinc, lead, and sulfur. The zinc-lead fume obtained from the treatment contains about 40 pct zinc and 20 pct lead and represents essentially complete recovery of these metals.

The major industrial classifications in stone mining are dimension stone (used for construction purposes), crushed and broken stone (aggregates), cement, and lime. "Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of new' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gallons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain thin high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ire near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand For new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements in the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. The Bureau of Nines has received many inquiries on the subject of assaying oil-shales, both from individuals who desire to wake their own assay while in the field, and also from Commercial assayers and investigators. The present paper describes the assay retort used by the Bureau of Mines. in the research work on oil-shales now in progress at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau at Salt Lake City, Utah, and at the Colorado cooperative oil-shale laboratory, Boulder, Colorado. This retort, which was developed through experimentation in the bureau's laboratories, has been found to be convenient in use and. capable of yielding reproducible results. M. J. Gavin, Oil-Shale Technologist, gave valuable assistance in preparing the subject matter for publication and made many helpful suggestions during the experiments made by the writer in the course of the development of the assay retort. Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. Current certification testing of self-contained breathing apparatus includes tests with human subjects wearing the apparatus while exercising. During these tests, certain apparatus variables are measured during rest periods. Because of concerns that the present tests may not accurately simulate the stresses to which an apparatus is subjected in the field, the Bureau of Mines proposed new human subject tests. It was also felt that different measurement techniques would supply more reliable data on the apparatus response to these stresses. The Los Alamos National Laboratory was asked by the Bureau to evaluate the proposed tests and monitoring techniques. The major conclusions derived during this study are these: (1) The proposed tests are not too physically demanding. (2) As long as human test subjects are used, a minimum subject weight should be required for certification tests. (3) Important apparatus variables are the breathing resistance, temperature, and carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations of the inhaled gas. (4) Continuous monitoring should be used, rather than monitoring only during rest periods. (5) New pass/fail criteria based on realistic estimates of the user's physiological requirements, as tempered by present and future engineering limitations, are needed. (6) When available, breathing machines, rather than human subjects, should be used for most certification testing. (7) A more realistic ergonomics test than that proposed is needed. (8) A gas leak test for the system and a facepiece leakage test are also needed.

Many of the rare-earth oxides are now commercially available in pure form and they have a variety of potential technical uses. Thermodynamic data for these oxides, however, are rather sparse. It is one of the functions of the Bureau of Mines to fill the need for this type of information. This report gives the results of low-temperature heat-capacity and high-temperature heat-content measurements by the Bureau of Mines of lanthanum sesquioxide. The entropy at 298.15° K. was evaluated and heat-content and entropy increments above 298.15° K. were obtained to 1,800° K. The results were combined with the known heat of formation at 298.15° K. to derive heats and free energies of formation at higher temperatures. Sufficient information is now available to permit reliable thermodynamic calculations involving lanthanum sesquioxide within the temperature range 298° to 2,000° K.

Elastic-plastic finite-element simulation of cut-and-fill stoping in deep, narrow veins shows substantial quantitative agreement with field measurements of stope closure and fill pressure made at two mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. The simulation procedure, validated by field data, was used in an analytical study of vein-wall closure and sill-pillar stress as influenced by fill modulus, rock modulus, and premining stress. Ratios of closure and pillar stress in the filled stopes to closure and pillar stress in the unfilled stopes are used as prediction indices for fill performance. In general, the support capability of fill increases dramatically as the ratio of fill modulus to rock modulus approaches 1. A significant reduction in closure .from the open stope--up to 75 percent--occurs with a relatively low-quality 10-ksi-modulus fill (rock modulus of 1,000 ksi). However, a higher quality fill is needed to achieve a substantial reduction in pillar stress from that of the open stope. A 100-ksi-modulus fill reduces pillar stress in both the 36-foot and l6-foot pillars (vein width is 10 feet) by about 50 percent relative to the open stope.

"INTRODUCTIONPlatelet-activating factor (P AF) has been shown to mediate a broad range of biologic activities (1). Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group, an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon of the glycerol backbone, and an ether linkage at the first carbon. The alkyl group attached to the first carbon can exist in a variety of chain lengths, with the C16 and C18 forms predominant in humans. The structure of P AF has been identified as 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine (2,3).PAF can be released from a variety of cell types, such as basophils, neutrophils, and alveolar macrophages ( 4-6). Stimuli for the release of P AF include calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and zymosan. In addition, endotoxin has been shown to be a potent stimulant of P AF release from alveolar macrophages (7).P AF has been shown to have a number of pulmonary effects. It has been associated with asthma since it can cause contraction of pulmonary tissue (8) and leukotriene secretion from leukocytes (9) and induce airway constriction when inhaled by humans (10). In addition, PAF is a potent chemoattractant and can cause migration ofneutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (11,12). Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide-protein complex derived from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. I.PS is the lipopolysaccharide portion of endotoxin. LPS contains four covalently joined subunits: lipid A, 3-deoxyoctonate, a core polysaccharide moiety, and an 0-specific antigenic polysaccharide side chain. Rough LPS contains no 0-antigen side chain. The liP.id A portion of LPS has been associated with most of the biolQgic effects of endotoxin (13). This lipid A subunit consists of a D-glucosamine disaccharide backbone substituted with four fatty acid side chains. Endotoxin is found in a wide variety of occupational settings associated with organic dusts derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, cereal grains, silage, rice, and poultry (14-18). In addition, airborne endotoxin has been found in sewage treatment plants, composting plants, offices with contaminated humidifiers, and showers or saunas (19-22)."

"It took only 9 years from the first appearance of roof shields on the U.S. longwall mining scene to the present predominance of shield faces. An apparent consequence is the welcome downward trend in accidents related to failures in longwall ground control. The report addresses load prediction, the effects of shield geometry on support loads, factors contributing to ground control, and related techniques. The Bureau of Mines took an active part in the evolution of longwall mining, including developing one of the first shield faces in 1975, the first lemniscatetype shields in 1976, the Mine Roof Simulator completed in 1980, the first shields in steeply pitching coalbeds in 1981, and the first multilift working of a thick coalbed in 1982. The information offered in this state-of-the-art report will assist in establishing criteria for roof support selection. INTRODUCTIONIn terms of roof support technology, the introduction of shields in the seventies and eighties was a major step forward. Table 1 indicates the predominance of shield faces on the U.S. longwall mining scene and its apparent consequence, a welcome downward trend of ground-control related accidents.The rapid progress of longwall technology began in 1975 and is highlighted by a development leading from the caliper shield to the modern lemniscate type. Shields have been gaining preference over chocks since their advent to longwall mining in 1975. Safety and productivity factors favoring shields over chocks are--1. A sheltered working space requiring minimum cleanup work.2. Structural stability that allows advancing without delay even with brushing roof contact and, by controlling all lateral loads, removing the requirement for cumbersome leg restraint and restoration devices.3. Wide hydraulic range of mining height.The development of roof shields in the Federal Republic of Germany preceded and paralleled their rapid adoption by U.S. miners. In 1983, 87 pct of the total production in Germany came from shield faces (1).2 In Great Britain, the National Coal Board introduced the first shield support system in 1977 to initiate Advanced Mining Technology (ATM) and Heavy Duty Mechanization (HDM) programs; as of mid-1982, 44 shield faces were operating, or 7.5 pct of a total of 581 faces CJ_)."
