[A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was established in 1939, when a the average B.t.u. requirements per barrel of crude oil processed declined to a new low of 557,000 B.t.u. (see fig. 1). The average fuel requirement per barrel of crude oil refined has remained virtually stationary for the past 3 years. Thus in 1937 the average was 562,000 B.t.u., in is it rose to 567,000 B.t.u., and in 1939 it declined to 557,000 B.t.u. she largest gains in fuel economy cane a decade or so ago on the widespread introduction of heat exchanges and pipe stills. In recent years many successful innovations in heat saving have been adopted, but the combined effect of those is completely masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Some heat requirements are relatively inelastic, so the average consumption per barrel of crude oil refined tends s to increase when the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) declines and vice versa. In 1939 crude runs to stills increased 6 percent (from 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938 to 1,237,840,000 in 1939) compared with a decline of about 2 percent in 1938. The operating ratio in 1939 was 82 percent compared it's 78 percent in 1938.]

The value of mineral production in Alabama reached a new high of more than $246 million. 4 percent above the previous record established in 1964. New high values were reported for bentonite, portland cement, fire day, kaolin, miscellaneous clay, lime, crushed limestone, crushed marble, mica. salt, and sand and gravel. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in the production of bauxite and scrap mica and third in the production of native asphalt. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and Slone, the manufacturing of cement, and the production of crude petroleum, which together comprised 85 percent of the total value of mineral output, compared with 84 percent in 1964. The iron ore industry continued to decline. Coal production continued to increase, resulting in the State's coal-mining best year since 1948.

A thermal oil-recovery experiment was conducted in the Venango First sand, Goodwill Hill oilfield, Warren County, Pa., about 10 miles northeast of Titusville. The Quaker State Oil Refining Corp., Bradford, Pa., performed the experiment with assistance from Sinclair Research, Inc., Tulsa, Okla., and the Federal Bureau of Mines. The Goodwill Hill field was discovered in 1885. Primary-production oper- ations continued until 1930 when an air-gas injection project, which is still in operation, was started. At the location of the combustion experiment, the reservoir is 400 feet deep and 30 feet thick, with wide permeability and porosity variations. The crude oil is typical Pennsylvania Grade paraffin- base oil with a gravity of 43.9° API and a viscosity of 4.55 cp at 60° F. The well pattern for the experiment consisted of 5 producing wells, enclosing an area of 1.28 acres, and a central ignition-injection well. An air-natural gas mixture was ignited in the ignition well on July 29, 1961. Ignition was followed by injection of air and natural gas at various rates. The experiment was suspended January 5, 1962, when it became evident that economic oil production could not be achieved. There was no conclusive evidence that self-sustained combustion was achieved or that combustion increased oil and water production. A slight increase in liquid production was attributed to stripping action caused by the air-injection rates, which were higher than those normally used during air-gas injection.

Ventilation is the most important safety factor in the production of coal because on it depends the safety, health, and efficiency of those who work underground. Without adequate and efficient means of supplying fresh air to the working faces, mining could not have advanced as it has. The extent of the workings, the increase in mechanization, and the increasing use of electricity are largely responsible for changes in methods of ventialtion. Ventilation in the early, days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings: Later the furnace was introduced for the purpose of increasing the quantity of air in circulation. Mines continued to become larger, their output increased, men were employed in greater numbers, and more fresh coal surfaces were exposed. Coal beds near the surface, and practically free from explosive gas became exhausted, and deeper beds that liberated methane were opened as development advanced. Mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by disc-type steam driven fans she old-.fashioned steam driven disc fan has generally been supplanted by the powerful electrically operated centrifugal fans in use at modern coal mines. In order to be secure against gas explosions and provide ample fresh air for persons employed in large coal mines, air must be conducted through the mine to all working places and to all other unsealed parts of the mince in sufficient quantities to dilute and render harmless all dangerous and noxious gases.

Proposed advantages and disadvantages of low-voltage shielded trailing cables are formulated utilizing the literature and industry sources. A partial analysis of these proposed advantages and disadvantages is completed through a review of the literature. Cable costs are assembled from mine operators, cable and splice manufacturers, and actual cable purchases. To confirm each advantage and disadvantage, an underground test site is established, and testing is performed here and in the laboratory. All testing procedures are completely described. The results of this investigation are reported and used to formulate recommendations attendant to low-voltage shielded cables. Suggestions for installation, handling, and maintenance are presented.

This study investigated stratigraphic and structural causes of roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in nine mines in eastern Kentucky. A contract modification provided for remote sensing studies in the Dunkard Basin of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Results of stratigraphic and structural studies of an earlier contract (H0133018) were applied to several new mines. It was found that similar rock sequences contributed to unstable roof conditions. Structure contour and isopach maps were found useful In projecting these trends together with fence diagrams. Using Landsat imagery, a direct relationship was found between lineament direction and the trends of rock jointing, roof fall zones, "snap top" zones and sandstone channels in the examples cited. It was found that, by analyzing lineament intersections, from 50 percent to 65 percent coincided with roof falls.

The Remote Working Level Monitor (RWLM) is an instrument used to remotely monitor the Rn-daughter concentrations and the Working Level (WL). It is an ac powered, microprocessor based instrument which multiplexes two independent detector units to a single central processor unit (CPU). The CPU controls the actuation of the detector units and processes and outputs the data received from these remote detector units. The remote detector units are fully automated and require no manual operation once they are set up. They detect and separate the alpha emitters of RaA and RaC' as well as detecting the beta emitters of RaB and RaC. The resultant pulses from these detected radioisotope; are transmitted to the CPU for processing. The programmed microprocessor performs the mathematical manipulations necessary to output accurate Rn-daughter concentrations and the WL. A special subroutine within the program enables the RWLM to run and output a calibration procedure on command. The data resulting from this request can then be processed in a separate program on most computers capable of BASIC programming. The calibration program results in the derivation of coefficients and beta efficiencies which provides calibrated coefficients and beta efficiencies.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study of respirable dust concentrations at an underground room-and-pillar oil shale mine and at the aboveground milling facility to determine the dust generation sources, personal respirable exposure, characteristic minerals, and size distribution of the dust. Major dust sources in the mine were the scaling and blasthole drilling operations, and major dust sources in the processing mill were the screening and crushing operations. Principal minerals found in the airborne respirable dust were albite, analcite, calcite, dolomite, quartz, and orthoclase. The average alpha-quartz content of mine and mill respirable dust samples was 4.1 pct and 15.5 pct, respectively. Carbonaceous material such as diesel particulate accounted for approximately 75 pct of the respirable particulate found in the mine. The average coefficient of variance of respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal dust samplers in the mine and mill was 7.6 pct, the best precision observed to date with the personal dust sampler operated in the field.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1982, 13 companies operated 30 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 55% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 34% of the production; Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas 18%; Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina 14%; other central and eastern States 34%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1982 was valued at over $5.5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 39% of domestic consumption in 1982, transportation 20%, building 14%, electrical 8%, consumer durables 8%, and other uses 11%.

The Federal Government, as the largest lessor of oil and gas lands in the United States, is vitally interested in the conservation of those resources. This manual has been prepared at the direction of the Secretary of the Interior to call the attention of lessees of public oil and gas lands to the most common oil and gas field wastes and the best methods of preventing them; to outline the policies of the Interior Department on field operations; and to give information as to how the "Operating Regulations" of the department will be interpreted by the Bureau of Mines. The oil industry has progressed steadily. Present operating methods are much more efficient-and less wasteful-than those of a few years ago; moreover, the art of producing oil and gas is continually advancing. Public interest requires that improved methods, which will result in obtaining the greatest possible amounts of oil and gas from the natural deposits, shall be developed and used. Part I of this manual points out types of oil and gas wastes and suggests, in detail or by reference, the most practical and effective methods in current practice for stopping these wastes. Throughout Part I the department's operating policy is given, with interpretations of the "Operating Regulations" for enforcing every practical measure of conservation. Part II comprises the revised "Operating Regula-tions" which supersede all previous regulations and will govern future operations on public lands; it will be found in the pocket in the back cover of this bulletin.

The rate of dissolution of U02 was measured in acid solutions similar to those used for in situ leaching, with S04 of 10-1.82 to 10-4 M, Fe(III) of 10-2 to 10-4 M and pH's of 1.1 to 2.3. The dependence of dissolution rate on pH was small and inconsistent, probably reflecting the combined effects of a very weakly polar oxidizing complex, probably FeSO4+, and a nearly neutral U02 surface. Differences in the state of the U02 surface may explain this variability as well as contrasts between these results and results reported in other work. Changing either S04 or Fe(III) concentrations significantly affects dissolution rates. Increasing low sulfate concentrations in solutions containing 10 2 M Fe(III) at pH 2 results in formation of FeSO4+. In such solutions, rates increased with (S04)/(Fe(III)) up to 1:30, thereby indicating that the oxidation of U02 by FeSO4 is more rapid than by Fe3+. However, the dissolution rate decreased at higher (SO4)/ (Fe(III)), due either to sorption of SO42- on the UO2 surface or to formation of other less reactive sulfate complexes such as Fe(S04)2 or FeHSO4+ However, Fe(III) concentration is the dominant factor in determining solution rates. The rate was directly proportional to ferric iron concentration, indicating that the rate-determining step of the dissolution reaction is a single-electron oxidation by a ferric complex. Dissolution rates were lower in solutions of 0.1 and 1.0% H202 (0.029 and 0.29 M) than at similar concentrations of ferric iron because of formation of an insoluble surface coating of uranium peroxide, UO4?4H20. This phase may limit the value of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant in lixiviants, not only by its very low solubility, but perhaps also by filling pores and reducing permeability in the ore body.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating hydrometallurgical processing techniques to recycle metals from semiconductors and other advanced materials. Cadmium and tellurium were recovered from mixed CdTe/CdS scrap produced in the manufacture of thin-film photovoltaic devices. Selective cadmium dissolution was achieved using oxygen-pressure leaching in dilute sulfuric acid. Leaching the scrap for 90 min at 110° C in 2.2NH2S04 under 400 psig 02 yielded 97% Cd extraction; however, cadmium content of the residue ranged between 4% and 7%. Soluble iron was added to the lixiviant to catalyze oxidation of the CdS component. Tellurium and sulfur remained in the leach residue primarily in the elemental form. The iron and tellurium were removed from the cadmium-rich leach liquor by adjusting the pH to 5.3. The cadmium was recovered as cadmium sulfate crystals by evaporating the solution. Alternative leaching and purification schemes are discussed.

Costs of producing lead from various known resources in the United States are developed by the Bureau of Mines to define the future availability of domestic lead at various price levels. It is estimated that 60 million tons of primary lead (75 percent of the total resource) is available at $0.20 or less per pound; 72 million tons (90 percent of the total) is available at $0.50 or less per pound; and the 79 mil- lion ton total estimated resource can be obtained at a price or $1.82 or less per pound. The supply available at $0.20 per pound or less will meet demand for over 78 years at the 1970 annual consumption rate of 763,000 tons.

Native asphalt was produced by four companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm. R. L. White Co., Dabney Quarry, Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by three firms: American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation), from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds. Gilsonite production in 1985 declined 57% owing primarily to reduced oil well drilling activity. The value per ton was essentially unchanged.

Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the dangers of this gas, and frequent now items retort the finding of persons dead or unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either those warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you - carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons, as evidenced by items appearing daily in newspapers all over the country. Carbon monoxide has been a threat to human safety as long as man has used fire to keep himself warm and to cook his food. The burning of any fuel that contains carbon may produce carbon monoxide. This is true of solid fuels such as coal, coke, and wood; of liquid fuels such as oil, gasoline, and kerosene, and of gaseous fuels such as natural or manufactured gas. In the process of combustion the carbon in the fuel unites the chemically with tat oxygen of the air to form carbon dioxide (CO2), however, if the supply of air is not adequate, combustion is incomplete and carbon monoxide (CO) will be formed.

The Korean crisis and the cessation of Russian manganese-ore shipments to the United States in 1950 reemphasized the almost total dependence of the domestic steel industry on foreign supplies for metallurgical-grade manganese ore. In this emergency, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to undertake experimental mine and process development work on the known large reserves of low-grade manganese ore in the Artillery Mountains region in Mohave County, Ariz. The objective of the work was to obtain the basic mining and metallurgical data needed to make specific plans for initiating exploitation of the deposits within 3 years if high-grade foreign ore could not be obtained during the emergency. The manganese deposits of the Artillery Mountains region are in an area of about 25 square miles on the north side of the Bill Williams River in southern Mohave County. Lasky, of the Federal Geological Survey, has estimated reserves at 175 million tons of manganiferous material assaying 3.5 to 4 percent Mn. Although the man¬ganese occurs in various Tertiary and Quaternary formations as both bedded and fissure vein deposits, the more important syngenetic deposits are found in upper and lower manganiferous zones in the sedimentary beds of playa and alluvial fan origin that constitute the Chapin Wash formation.

Diatomaceous or infusorial earth when found in such quantity and quality as to render lands containing deposits valuable therefor are mineral lands within the meaning of the mining laws and must be excepted from grants to the Central Pacific Railway Company. RAILROAD GRANT-CLASSIFICATION, If any evidence of minerals is found upon lands within a railroad grant and the showing is sufficient in the opinion of prudent and qualified persons to warrant further exploration and expenditure, with reasonable prospects of success, then the land can not be classified as nonmineral and is not subject to the grant to a railroad company. But where there is no present indication of minerals nor any geological evidence upon which to base a mineral finding, land should not be classified as mineral, or held for further classification and reserved from the railroad's grant, upon the surmise that future prospects might disclose evidences of minerals. INDEMNITY SELECTION BY RAILWAY COMPANY, Under section 3 of the act of July 2, 1864 (13 Stat., 365), and the joint resolution of May 31, 1870 (16 Stat., 378), the Northern Pacific Railway Company could take coal and iron land within its primary or grant limits. It could not base an indemnity selection upon the claim that certain land was coal or iron in ;;haracter, as such land was not lost to it as part of the grant. But the company was authorized to select other lands in lieu of those lost because of their mineral character, but the word "mineral" did not include iron or coal, and, accordingly, the railroad company was entitled to take coal lands under its indemnity selection.

In the October 1998 issue of the Holmes Safety Association Bulletin, NIOSH authors Mark Stephenson and Carol Merry wrote the article Hearing loss among miners and measures to protect hearing, which focused on the extensiveness of hearing loss among miners and the use of hearing protection to prevent hearing loss. While the primary importance of engineering controls in preventing hearing loss was discussed, since miners do not generally have control over their work en­vironment or assignments, the article focused on the importance of consis­tent use of hearing protection. In this article, all aspects of a compre­hensive approach to the prevention of hearing loss in miners will be covered. The discussions will do the following: ? describe application of the hierarchy of controls in preventing hear­ing loss in miners, ? give an example for each type of control measure and its impact, ? explain the major provisions, be­yond the hierarchy of controls, of the recent NIOSH document en-titled Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupa­tional Noise Exposure, Revised Criteria 1998 relative to a hearing loss prevention program, and ? summarize important points on control of noise exposure for every miner to remember, equipment in most facets of operations. Miners are well aware of noisy areas in or around equipment, icluding extraction machinery such as draglines, power shovels, longwall shearers, and continuous mining machines; powered haulage equipment such as load-haul-dumps, shuttle cars, large trucks, and continuous haulage units; roof bolting machines; jackleg drills and stopers; auxiliary equipment such as compressors, fans, and pumps; size reduction equipment, etc. They are not well aware of the insidious nature of pro­gressive hearing loss, which is per­manent, but they are generally aware of what levels of noise are hazardous and what measures can be taken to reduce their personal noise exposure. Behaviorally, however, there are many reasons why miners choose not to use hearing protection faithfully.
