This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. "INTRODUCTION This report contains information on the approximate size of the smallest dust Particles revealed by or the limit of visibility of various microscopic systems. The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. "INTRODUCTION Toxic gases in the products from the detonation of explosives are one of the hazards in blasting underground. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines 4/5/ have shown that the oxygen balance of the explosive is an important factor in the control of toxic gases. This balance is considered in determining the composition of modern metal-mining explosives for blasting underground, and application of the concept has reduced the volume of toxic gases generated.The chemical nature of the material being blasted also influences the composition of the toxic gases produced. Under some conditions of blasting in massive pryrite, unsafe concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide have been found.Experiments with the O-J apparatus 8/ have shown that there is an increase in the volume of carbon monoxide in the gaseous products when permissible explosives are detonated in contact with coal dust. Thus, reactive materials of a reducing nature adjacent to explosives loaded in drill holes may decrease the effective oxygen balance of the explosive and cause the volume of toxic gases to increase.Several blasting accessories of reducing nature have been introduced recently for use in coal or metal mines or tunnels. In practice these are loaded adjacent to the explosive where conditions favor reaction with the products of detonation. The effects of this loading on the gaseous products obtained from the shot are indicated in this report. Broad consideration was not given the efficiency, usefulness, or over-all safety of these devices, but the practical significance of the hazard resulting from increased volume of carbon monoxide is discussed."

Ingersoll-Rand Research, T n c and the Lee-Norse Co. built a Bureau of Mines sponsored, special deep cutting continuous miner under this contract to study the effects of rotational speed and depth of cut on airborne respirable dust. After preliminary tests indicated and later verified that deep cutting - low rotational speed reduces airborne respirable dust, a series of underground tests were performed (9 combinations of rotational speed and depth of cut at 45° bit angle and 4" bit spacing). Additional data was obtained on specific energy, coal sizing and noise. The conclusions reached from the tests results were; a) deep cutting reduces airborne respirable dust generated and specific energy needed to cut coal., b) the greater majority of the decrease occurs in going from 1" to 2" depth of cut, c) lowering rotational speed has a particularly sizable effect of reducing the amount of dust at the operator's location, d) no significant relationship was found for either noise level or coal sizing to rotational speed or depth of cut. Recommendations include. a)) use of specific energy as an indicator of the change in dust level correlating to changes in cutting parameters, b) mine operators should acquire new deep cutting machines., since retrofitting would be selective.

This report presents the results of analytical studies made on two series of oil-shale samples from the Mahogany ledge of the Green River mine the character of the various grades of oil shale that are being mined and processed into shale oil and refined products at the Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant at Rifle, Colo. The analytical work was part of a synthetic liquid fuels program being conducted at the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station, Laramie, Wyo. The 16 oil shales ranG6d in color from a gray brown ( or a sample that assayed 10.5 gallons of oil per ton to a very dark brown for a sample that assayed 75.0 gallons of oil per ton. In general, the samples were similar as to the types of organic and inorganic matter that they contained but varied widely in the amounts or these constituents. The principal constituents were calcite, dolomite, illite, and yellow organic material, while the minor constituents were quartz, feldspar and plagioclase feldspar, pyrite, marcasite, analcite, opal, black organic material, and small woody fragments. Some micro-fossils, spores and pollen grains were found also.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Production of special silica stone, both crude and finished, decreased in 1983 because of reduced demand for oilstones

"Asbestos" is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is rather a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals. The origin and significance of names applied to asbestos by early writers are discussed in the section devoted to sources of supply and terms employed in ancient times. VARIETIES The most useful variety of asbestos is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine the composition of which is expressed by the formula H4Mg3Si209. Chrysotile is characterized by a strength and flexibility that permit the use of the longer fibers for spinning. The bulk of the world production of both long and short fibers, is of this variety.

This report describes a program to evaluate the feasibility of determining roof features which occur in United States coal mines from changes in bolting machine drilling parameters. The ultimate purpose of this effort is the development of an instrumented roof bolting machine which can detect hazardous roof conditions and/or indicate when the existing roof control plan is inadequate. A survey of hazardous conditions occurring in United States coal mines is included, along with the slang expressions for these conditions, and their relative degree of hazard. Specific machine parameters are identified for detecting the specific roof conditions. Measurement concepts are proposed using readily available instrumentation in most cases. Various systems are evaluated and tradeoffs presented. An implementation plan is proposed for developing a prototype system and using it in an operating coal mine.

A study to explore the potential of utilizing the transport time required to move coal miners to and from the working sections. Consideration was given to all forms of training and presentation media, taking into account such environmental factors as noise, dynamic interferences, visibility, physical constraints, and contaminants. Indications of managements? and workers' attitudes toward man-trip training were also assessed. The final product was a proposed prototype training system for man-trip training. "The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many. It is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the PortlandMonson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In theMonson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry) a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved that by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate can be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there been an indication that this method may become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-steam distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming loss as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes the construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractionating column and gives certain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made. For example, a study could be made of the distillates obtained up to the point of cracking of the charge if a topped crude were charged to the still; if the still was used as a rerun unit for lubricating distillates a study of nearly the entire charge could be made. Only topped crude has been charged to the still so far, and therefore this paper is limited to the results obtained from the distillation of such a charge. The results so far obtained indicate that such an apparatus is valuable in a study of different crude petroleums as sources of lubricating distillates.

Manganese ores have been mined in the Batesville district since 1849. Although not continuous over the intervening years, production had totaled approximately 432,000 tons of manganese ore and ferruginous manganese ore to the end of 1953. The ores occur in deposits, essentially low in manganese content, distributed over an east-west belt 24 miles long and 4 to 8 miles wide, the core of which is about 6 miles north of Batesville, Independence County. Although the reserves of high-grade ores in the district are comparatively small, the large deposits of subgrade ores and low-grade manganiferous material comprise potential sources of supply of manganese that may have increasing future importance. The manganese occurs as primary oxide and carbonate minerals in relatively flat-lying limestone and shale formations in which they were originally deposited and as oxides in residual clays resulting from decomposition of the shale and lime-stone. Most of the deposits underlie from a few to over a hundred feet of sedimentary chert, but many occur in the residual clays on exposed slopes of chert-covered hills.

There are many large rhodunite-bearing veins containing manganese in the Eureka-Animas Forks area of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The Sunnyside vein is the largest known vein in the area. As observed on the surface, the vein is mineralized over 8,000 feet and attains a maximum width of 200 feet. The average width of the vein and its branches and ramifications is 58 feet in the area that was mapped in detail. The weighted-average analysis of surface and underground samples from the northeastern extension of the Sunnyside vein is 8 percent manganese. Most other known veins in the area have a similar manganese content. The Hidden Treasure vein lies southeast of the Sunnyside-No Name-Mastadon vein. The weighted average of the analyses of surface and underground samples from this vein is 13 percent manganese. Exposures of the Scotia-Silver Chord vein are visible over a strike length of 4,000 feet on Treasure Mountain. Diamond-drill holes show that the vein contains 10 percent or more manganese to a depth of 400 feet. The vein has an average width of 28 feet. The Independence vein is exposed on the surface for a distance of 600 feet and has an average width of 6 feet. Three cut samples taken across the vein had an average content of 20.7 percent manganese. Sampling of the outcrops of eight veins in the Placer Gulch area also indicates manganese. Numerous other veins cropping out in the surrounding area are similar to the outcrop of the. Sunnyside vein system mineralogically and are worth investigating.

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operators, in other districts a detailed description of the ruining method used and the results obtained to exploiting one of the zinc-lead deposits of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri district. No. 1. mine is located in the heart of the town of Picher in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma. HISTORY The first prospect drilling was done at No. 1 mine late in-1914, and shaft sinking was started early in 1915. Sufficient ore was developed to start construction of the mill in April, 1016, Production begin in August, 1916, and the mine s been producing, except for short periods, to the present time. The property was originally a 40-acre tract, but additional properties have been consolidated with the original one until the mine now covers 200 acres.

This report describes coal-mining methods, power requirements, coal production and distribution, and coal resources of the Bull Mountain coal field in Musselshell and Yellowstone Counties, south-central Montana Investigations in the field, were conducted by Bureau of Mines engineers The report contains a short summary of the geology and geography of the field and discusses the following information secured during the field study: Method of mining practiced at each mine, including a description of each phase of the mining cycle. Coal produced and its distribution at each mine. Power requirements and the consumption of electricity per ton of coal produced by mines. Number of non employed by mines, and the production per man per shift underground and the over-all production per man employed. Estimates of future production and power requirements for the field as a whole. This information should be of benefit to any company or individual planning the development of now coal mines in the area or the expansion of present operations.

"INTRODUCTION Corrosion of sections of piping used in steam-heating systems is frequently regarded as unavoidable, and periodic replacement is provided. Surfaces exposed to newly condensed steam appear to be especially vulnerable to attack. As an added nuisance, solid products of the corrosion tend to accumulate, plugging return lines.The trouble is ascribed in the main to carbon dioxide and oxygen 3/ 4 / 5/ 6/ dissolved in the condensate. When oxygen is the principal factor, the corrosion usually is characterized by pitting. Carbon dioxide tend3 to cause an acidic condensate which dissolves the metal more uniformly and produces the familiar failure at threaded areas where the piping is relatively thin, and where high stress may tend to acceletate the attack. Carbon dioxide enters the system with the feedwater, generally in a combined form such as carbonates and bicarbonates. Oxygen enters both with the raw feedwater-and as air leaking into lines under partial vacuum. The larger central-heating plants have sought to reduce corrosion by eliminating these gases as much as possible. A smaller plant ordinarily lacks the equipment and technical supervision required for this purpose."

The petrographic microscope plays an important role in the mineral dressing of nonmetallic materials. Petrographers and mineral technologists have evinced an interest in the technique developed, specifically, for mineral-dressing problems. Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

"Distinction between Tripoli and Diatomaceous EarthMuch confusion exists both in the literature and in the trade as to the proper use of the terms tripoli, tripolite diatomeceons or infusoriai earth, and kieseigunr. All of these terms are often used synonymously by the trade and even in mineralogists and other reference books. Actually, tripoli is a ma- is a material of definite and distinct physical and chemical properties and all of the other terms belong to a different material with just as definite and distinct properties.Originally the term tripolite (loosely called tripole) was given to a diatomaceous cart from Tripoli in Northern Africa. Dena (J.D. Dana, A System of Mineralogy 6th Ed.) calls this material tripolite and gives no authority for the use of the terms tripoli. Between 1880 and 1890 the deposits near Missouri, were opened and the material placed on the market as ""Tripoli"" no doubt due to its resemblance in some respect to the original tripolite or diatomaceous worth from Tripoli. Since that time the term tripoli has with increasing definitenesss been reserved for the Seneca material and other siliceous of similar origin and physical properties, while all siliceous material of organic origin, containing dilators, has been called diatomaceous earth (or its synonyms infusorial earth, kiselguhr, etc.). Rottenstone is sometimes classed with tripoli."

A multistage probability model for assessing the reliability of mineral samples following any number of stages of sample reduction is presented. Sample reduction is the process of alternately crushing or grinding and sampling mineral particles prior to assaying. The final multistage model developed accurately describes the ideal sample reduction practice. This model is based on previously developed and experimentally tested models for a single stage of sampling. The problem is approached through the probability distributions for the various stages of sampling. The probability distribution, moments, and moment relationships for a single stage of sampling are first reviewed, and the useful concept of unit moments is defined. In presenting the models for two stages of sampling, emphasis is placed on the physical description of the sample reduction process which leads quite naturally to its mathematical representation. In this representation, crushing or particle-size reduction between the stages of sampling is viewed as a random process with respect to the number and proportion of particles of the various kinds produced. The physical and mathematical description is extended to more than two stages of sample reduction, and the first three moments for any number of stages are developed. In common sample reduction practice the effects of a finite population (finite amount of material) at each stage of sampling appear to be important in describing the variance contribution of each stage. This is also true for the third moment about the mean. An example is cited in which the skewness increases by more than an order of magnitude when several stages of sampling are considered. This is largely due to the dependence of the multistage third moment about the mean on the variance. In general the model and results should be useful in helping to understand, control, and reduce the random errors that arise in the sample reduction process.
