Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly In the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This dean is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorable situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4 ? 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting, even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery oil production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-.waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. Sodium chloride In limited concentrations is also present, as extensive beds of salt occur in strata overlying the polyhalite deposits. A typical waste liquor would contain:

Energies of combustion of vanadium nitride (VN) and vanadium carbide (VC) were measured. Correcting to vanadium tetroxide (V204) as the final state, the heats of combustion were ?H298.15=-118,700±100 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-240,270±360 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. With vanadium pentoxide (V205) as the final state, the heats of combustion were ?H298.15= -133.440±100 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-255,020±360 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. Combining these results with vanadium oxide data, the heats of formation obtained were ?298.15=-51,880±200 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-24,350±400 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. Heats and free energies of formation of vanadium nitride and carbide were calculated to 2,000° K.

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system's ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system's ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system.

Preliminary results of an explosive fracturing-solvent injection heavy oil recovery experiment conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a shallow oil reservoir near Bartlett, Kans., are given. Three wells 35 to 50 feet apart were drilled to a depth of 360 feet, and an open hole interval from 300 to 350 feet in the Bartlesville Sandstone Formation was explosively fractured with 3,000 pounds of pelletized TNT in each well. Laboratory tests were made on cores obtained from these wells to confirm the suitability of using an aromatic-type solvent. Injection of a 74-percent aromatic solvent was begun into one well and continued intermittently for approximately 2 months. Crude oil production amounted to 29.6 bbl, or 11.7 percent of the total oil con¬tained within the three-well interwell zone.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. Diagnostic: tests were performed on a production ST-5A Load-Haul-Dump machine manufactured by Wagner Mining Machinery Company to evaluate and rank order noise sources. The diagnostic evaluation indicated that the major noise sources were the transmission, the engine, and the cooling fan. This phase was followed by implementation of recommended noise control treatments, which included vibration isolation of the transmission, a transmission enclosure, an engine enclosure, and modifications of the inlet to the cooling fan. The final step in the program was an underground operational period which began on 31 August 1976 at the National Gypsum Mine in Shoals, Indiana. The noise control treatments successfully reduced the LHD operator noise exposure by 7 dB(A), thus increasing its allowable operation time by a factor of 2.7. Actual measurements made underground using noise dosimeters have indicated that, during, a typical shift, the noise control treatments have reduced the fractional exposure to an allowable level. The report discusses the mechanical aspects of the LHD, its noise sources, the treatments applied, the final levels achieved, and field experience with the noise-controlled machine.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 147 known fluorspar deposits in New Mexico and briefly mentions 54 miscellaneous occurrences for which little or no information was obtained. Most miscellaneous occurrences are minor and too poorly exposed to be considered more than prospects. History and production of fluorspar in New Mexico, type of deposition, mineralogy, uses, and grade specifications are discussed. Total mine production of fluorspar in New Mexico is nearly 641,000 tons of various grades of crude ore and hand-sorted material. Fluorspar deposits occur in 13 of the state&apos;s 32 counties. Grant, Valencia, and Luna Counties account for 86.4 percent of the total production. During the investigation, 141 deposits were visited. A total of 72 character samples was collected for assay, and 3 larger samples were collected for bench-scale metallurgical tests. Results of these metallurgical tests indicate that an acid-grade product can be obtained with 95 percent recovery of the CaF2 content of the crude ore.

The Thermo-MIE personal DataRAM dust monitor (pDR) is a light-scattering instrument approved for use in gassy underground mines by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). However, the use of light-scattering monitors has been inhibited by concerns about inaccurate readings resulting from changes in dust size distribution and composition, as well as concerns about the impact of moisture in the mine air. Because of this concern, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the pDR using available data from laboratory tests and mine surveys. The data show that accuracy can vary widely from test to test and mine to mine. In most cases, the results can be improved by using a companion gravimetric measurement to adjust the pDR data.

The southeastern region of the United States is becoming more important as a petroleum-producing area, and it is receiving increasing attention from oil operators. In 1948 total production of crude oil from six southeastern States - Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia - was 55,244,000 barrels, which represents 2.7 percent of the Nation&apos;s output during that year. Kentucky and Tennessee have produced crude oil since the early days of the industry, but the remaining four States have had production only few years. Data on annual production of crude petroleum in the six States are given in table 1.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to develop and test for laboratory use a retort embodying many features required for practical commercial-scale applications of vacuum distillation of metals. A gas-fired vacuum retort was developed comprising a hollow, cylindrical graphite liner encased in a thin shell of stainless steel. The liner prevents the shell from collapsing under vacuum and protects it from corrosion by metal vapors and the molten metal charge. The vacuum-tight shell protects the liner from oxidation and flame erosion. The retort was used to distill zinc from dross and die-casting scrap. More than 99 percent of the zinc was recovered as a condensate containing 99.8 to 99.9 percent zinc. (Atmospheric distillation recovers 95 to 98 percent at a purity of 99.5 percent zinc.) Distillation rates of 50 pounds of zinc per hour were attained at a temperature of 65° C. with pressures ranging between 50 and 100 microns. Distillation at this low temperature is not practicable at atmospheric pressure. Also, the retort is suitable for distilling other volatile metals such as cadmium and magnesium.

The potential economic value of oil shale depends on the products from thermal degradation of the rock, because no other practical method for producing valuable material from oil shale has been found. Detailed study of thermal degradation behavior can aid in characterizing oil shales and their deposits and in evaluating oil-shale processing methods, Numerous publications describe various pyrolysis properties of oil shales (see surveys 3, 9, 11 and articles 1, 2, 4-8, 10, 12),4 but they do not describe a generally applicable analytical procedure for detailed evaluation of thermal degradation products. The analytical method presented here for such evaluations is designed to provide for: 1. Control of retorting conditions--temperature, heating, rate, reaction atmosphere--plus some control over retort pressure and carrier-gas flow, 2. Precise direct gravimetric measurement of the thermal degradation products--oil, water, gas, and spent charge (residue after thermal treatment of the charge). 3. Samples of all products. 4. Determination of the identities and amounts of gaseous compounds produced. 5. Elemental analysis and gross heating value of all products. 6. Determination of the distribution in the retorting products of the elements present in the original samples.

"INTRODUCTION Review of Previous Work Many investigators and certain commercial interests have recognized that the briquetting process is a practical method to convert much of what is now considered undesirable fuel into a usable form of domestic fuel.The art of improving the form of solid fuels is ancient, as early records indicate that the Chinese employed crude hand briquetting of combustible materials long before coal was known in Europe and America.According to Franke, 4/ the earliest description of a briquetting proce¬dure employed in the Occident is contained in an English patent dated in 1773. Following this in rapid sequence, many methods and procedures wore developed in this country and in Europe. Stillman/ states that the first attempt to briquet coal in the United States was made by Loiseau 6/ at Fort Richmond Piers, Philadelphia, in 1872. The American briquetting processes outlined by Stillman comprise an imposing compilation of successes and partial and outright failures."

"INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. "INTRODUCTION Bauxite, in Appalachian Alabama, occurs in the Rock Run and Goshen Valley districts in Cherokee County; in Nences Creek Valley near Jacksonville; near Anniston in Calhoun County; north of Fort Payne in DeKalb County; near Ashville in St. Clair County; and near Talladega in Talladega County.In February 1942, Preston E. Cloud, Jr., assistant geologist, Federal Geological Survey, began a study of these bauxite deposits and the geology relating thereto.The Bureau of Mines established field headquarters at Piedmont, Calhoun County, in July 1942. Mineral agreements covering a total of 11,097 acres were executed with 15 landowners in the Rock Run district; 38 in the Goshen Valley district, covering 7,575.5 acres; and 3 in the Nances Creek Valley district, covering 988.5 acres. Drilling was done on.the properties of 9 land¬owners in the Rock Run district, and on the property of 1 landowner each in the Goshen Valley and the Nances Creek districts. Drilling began October 26, 1942, and ceased on May 17, 1943.Power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes in shallow deposits and sampled .old shafts, mines, and mine dumps.In all, 222 holes for a total of 13,250 feet were drilled. Of these toles, 88 penetrated bauxite but too low in grade to constitute ore."

This paper discusses small-scale lade gold mining and milling. It is abstracted from a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing, and Operating Small Gold Mines." Gold is widely distributed in the mountainous regions of the United States; relatively few deposits, however, can be profitably worked on a large scale. Because of the high intrinsic value of gold, ores containing this metal may be very rich; hence it is possible to mine profitably smaller bodies of gold ore than of the more common metals.

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin&apos;s paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.
