Arc flash generally refers to the dangerous exposure to thermal energy released by an arcing fault on an electrical power system, and in recent years, arc flash hazards have become a prominent safety issue in many industries. This problem however, has not been effectively addressed in the mining industry. MSHA data for the period 1990 through 2001 attributes 836 injuries to “non-contact electric arc burns”, making it the most common cause of electrical injury in mining. This paper presents results from several elements of a recent NIOSH study of arc flash hazards in mining, and provides information and recommendations that can help reduce these injuries. Characteristics of past arc flash injuries in mining are first outlined, such as the electrical components and work activities involved (based on MSHA data). This is followed by a review of important concepts and terminology needed to understand this hazard. Next, methods for identifying, measuring, and managing arc flash hazards on a power system are covered, with emphasis on recommendations found in NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Finally, results are presented from a detailed arc flash hazard analysis performed on a sample mine electrical power system using IEEE 1584-2004a, focusing on components and locations presenting severe hazards as well as engineering solutions for reducing the risk to personnel. The behavior of wire ropes used in hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analyzed. This report provides a generalized mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix; the other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6×19 Seale, independent wire rope core (IWRC), right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires, which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion, were determined from this model. The effects of strain deformation were analyzed, resulting in a system of equations for determining the structural parameters of the deformed rope. In future work, the model could be used to analyze wire ropes of different constructions so that a more scientifically based understanding of rope behavior can be established.

The data reported in this bulletin are largely the result of experiments conducted by the Salt Lake City station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of metallurgical research of the University of Utah. The work on lead is only one of the phases of the investigations carried on at that station during the years 1914 to 1916. The results of similar work with zinc ores and with copper and other ores will be published in future reports of the bureau.

The Bibliographic Data Base is the result of a literature search con-ducted as one task of the technology assessment of current and advanced logging techniques, sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. After compilation, the bibliography was converted to an automated form for ease of utilization, and to allow for maintaining and updating the data base. The data base covers articles, symposia, books, patents, corporate and government reports, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging from January 1969 through December 1975. Periodic up-dating will be necessary to keep the data base contents in step with developments in the rapidly advancing field of application of borehole logging to mining. Many bibliographic indexes were scanned for entries relating to the subject of interest, and those entries which were included in our data base contain a reference to the bibliographic index in which they were listed (see Section 2.4.7). With the aid of these indexes, a vast number of publications, including foreign reports and publications, have been scanned for works relevant to borehole logging technology.

On January 14, 1974 a fire occurred in the 3 East mains of the Joanne Mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. in Rachel, West Virginia. The mine was evacuated without injury and sealed completely at the surface within 24 hours. It was decided by the coal company along with the U, S, Bureau of Mines, the West Virginia Bureau of Mints and MESA that remote sealing of the fire zone would be attempted. This report summarizes the remote sealing effort and those activities directly related to the remote sealing effort. This chapter provides a brief history of previous remote sealing attempts, a description of the recently developed remote sealing system and a description of the Joanne Mine operation as it related to and affected the remote sealing effort.

"Cellular damage induced by silica dust is known to be associated with increased fragility and destabilization or destruction of the cell membranes. The mechanism by which silica dust effects biological membranes is still unknown. Using the ESR spin-trap methodology, we find that hydroxyl radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground silica. The amount of the radicals generated depends on the extent of grinding and ""freshness"" of the dust. Using linoleic acid as a model lipid, we show that the silica dust causes lipid peroxidation via ·OH, 02-, or linoleic acid related radicals as intermediates. Catalase and superoxide dismutase inhibit the formation of these radicals. The results suggest that free radicals associated with freshly ground silica and the related lipid peroxidation of the memberanes may be the starting point of the silicotic processes.INTRODUCTIONDespite considerable-effort over the years, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrosis are still not fully understood (1,2). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the interaction of the quartz particles with the cell membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (3). We felt that the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz might involve oxygenated free radicals because (a) a suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported.(4,5) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the ;oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids, and (b) hydroxyl (·OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (6) and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes (7). Moreover it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates ·OH. radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (6). Earlier studies o~ the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of HzOz (8), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species, but, we are not aware of any report of the detection of ·OH radicals in quartz suspensions and this provided the motivation for the present undertaking. Since it is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short life time) in aqueous media, the ·OH radicals cannot be detected via electron spin resonance (ESR) directly (9,10), we have used ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (9) for studying the •OH formation."

In its work on mineral wastes the Bureau of Mines is studying losses in the melting of nonferrous metals and alloys. The greatest of these losses is that of zinc through volatilization in brass melting, but another and considerable loss is that of aluminum and its alloys in the melting of finely divided material. In order to get some idea of the magnitude of the loss in melting aluminum scrap and to find out what methods of melting were used information was gathered in regard to present practice; also experiments were conducted to obtain some data on the relative merits of different methods. As the experiments could be made on a laboratory scale only, they were not expected to solve the problem entirely, the object in making them being rather-by indicating which methods were of greater promise-to narrow the field over which largescale tests and comparisons need be made by those commercially nterested in the problem of melting scrap aluminum.

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. Experiments initiated by the Bureau of Mines on August 26. 1969, and recent work of others, have demonstrated the effectiveness of ventilation for controlling concentrations of respirable coal mine dust. Substantial reductions in dust concentrations have been attained by increasing the volume and rate of air movement across the face and by controlling the airflow pattern. Ventilation experiments conducted by the Bureau using high-pressure fans as auxiliary ventilation units showed that lace-generated dust could he effectively controlled in five mines employing continuous mining machines. Additional data was obtained on industry installations in two mines using similar ventilation systems. By maintaining an airflow approaching 100 fpm across the entry, the experimental system reduced the concentration of respirable dust by factors as great as 6.4. In all mines where the system was used the face-generated dust concentrations were reduced to below 3 mg/m3. Total respirable dust in two cases was above the 3 mg/m value because of the dust content of the intake air. In some mines. depending upon the type of coal being mined and other dust control factors in use, it was possible to Obtain concentrations of less than 2 mg/m Although the technology for the application of the dust control system investigated is readily available, it is evident that additional engineering studies should he made in each mine where the system is to be applied.

Ease in handling, precision temperature control, and almost complete freedom from ash are among those considered when a liquid fuel is selected for use in industrial processing. In some instances these fuels are desirable because more heating units can e packed in a Given space where space is limited, as on snips. In other cases the&apos; are chosen because of lower actual cost per British thermal unit absorbed, or for control of the flame to increase the capacity of furnaces, as in steel and refining.

"A comparative study of the intensities of the IR modes in the pjlotoacoustic and. FrIR spectroscopy of amorphous and crystalline SiO2 particles is presented. It is observed that in photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous SiO2, IR modes of surface species are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes of SiO2. This effect, though not yet understood, may find applications in surface science.Since the publication of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect in solids in 1976 [1], a great deal of attention has been paid to the development .of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) into an analytical technique for condensed matter studies, especially when combined with the modern Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer [2-8]. PAS has now been applied to a variety of experimental situations [2, 3] and it is particularly suitable for opaque powders and for cases where ~ample preparation (e.g. mixing with KBr as is usually done in FTIR spectroscopy) is not desirable. Another area of interest is the depth profiling feature of PAS, which is studied by varying the modulation frequency of the incident radiation [2-8]. The one-dimensional Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for non-porous samples has been extended to other cases [9-12]. Recently it has become known [11, 12] that for porous samples with porosity the IR modes are enhanced by a factor proportional toe. This enhancement is due to the pressure wave set up in the interstitial gas in the porous sample and this enhancement has been reported by a number of groups [12-14].In this Letter we report the observation of anomalously large enhancement of the PAS signal for certain surface IR modes on the surface of amorphous silica particles. This observation differs from the previous reports in that certain surface modes are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes. Although the reasons for this enhancement of the surface IR modes in PAS are not understood at present, this observation may open up new approaches to the study of surfaces. Results of these initial observations are given in this Letter. ·Experimental studies reported here were carried out on an FTIR spectrometer (Mattson Instruments, Model Cygnus 100) equipped with an MCT detector. The same instrument was used for PAS studies in conjunction with an MTEC (Model 100) PA cell. The sample cell and the spectrometer are continuously flushed with dry, CO2 free air obtained by the use of Balston Instruments Air Dryer Filter System (Model 75-60). Usually data were collected for 32 scans at 4 cm-I resolution, although both scan and resolution can be varied. For FTIR studies, samples were mixed with IR-grade KBr and pelletised. For PAS, no sample preparation is necessary and data are ratioed against dry carbon black [4, 5]."

Accurate measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration from a power tool is an important issue for tool manufacturers, because they are obliged to develop low-hazard power tools for workers. The International Standard ISO 5349(1) dictates a systematic procedure for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration. However, the uncertainty in this measurement is too large for manufacturers to apply such data to the design and modification of power tools. There can be several sources of this uncertainty in such measurements; e.g., operator-dependent, power tool-dependent, and operational conditions (see Table 1). For a manufacturer to characterize the exposure of a power tool’s use to a given level of vibration, the relationship between these uncertainty factors and the measured vibration must be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of several factors on the uncertainty in measurements. [ ] Methods In this study, some of the factors in Table 1 were selected for examination, and their effect on the measured variation was quantitatively investigated. Three tools from the same manufacturer were sampled at random in our experiments, and each of five of the same type of insert (disks or tips) was installed into each tool. Although each of the tools and inserts were of the same design and were made by the same production process, they differed from one to another, which can be a source of the variation in the measured vibration. Three human subjects participated in our experiments, which were carried out as stated in ISO 5349. The subjects were asked to maintain their posture, and the applied force was kept as constant as possible. The applied force was monitored using an indirect method, where vibration energy was displayed in real time during the experiment using a three-axis accelerometer attached to the work piece at a specified point. The appropriate range of the applied force was predetermined to cover the range of real work operations. The engineering tolerance between the inner diameter of a grit disk and the outer diameter of the tool shaft leads to an eccentricity of the mass at the center of the disk. The degree of eccentricity varies with installation, and this is another source of uncertainty. In our study, the effect of this eccentricity was investigated by carrying out repeated assembly and disassembly of an insert.

[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

The gas -flow oil-shale retort is a continuous, crass flow, gas -to -broken solid heat-exchange system in which heat is transferred by convection from the gas to the solide.2/ This type of heat transfer presents a problem of analysis that cannot be solved by methods in common use. Solution of this problem is necessary for design, operation analysis, and predict ion wherever that type of heat exchanger is used. This report embodies a method for calculation of heat transfer coefficient and temperature histories of gas and solid in the gas- flow retort operating at equilibrium conditions. Detailed calculations are presented to show the application of the method explained in this report to conditions of an actual run made in the gas-flow retort. Although used here for a specific case, the method is applicable to all heat exchangers that are characterized by continuous, crossflow, gas -to-broken solid heat transfer. INTRODUCTION In any direct, gas -to -broken solid heat -transfer system, it is difficult to measure the temperatures of the gas and solid inside the heat exchanger. The driving force for heat transfer between the two media in the bed there- fore usually is unknown. The major resistance to heat transfer is in the gas film surrounding the solid particles, and the thickness of this gas film is neither uniform nor can it be determined readily. It is well to point out also that determination of the surface area of the particles is of poor accuracy. Since the driving force, the major resistance, and the surface area in the heat-transfer system are such uncertain quantities, It is not feasible to calculate the heat transfer by usual methods. All of the fore- going statements are true of the gas-flow retort; as a result, efforts were made to determine apparent heat-transfer coefficients and temperature histories of gas and solid in the heat -exchange bed by calculation using those data that were available. The heat -transfer coefficient calculated has the following dimensions: B .t .u. per second, °F., cubic foot of bed volume, where heat - transfer coefficients normally have the units; B .t .u . per hour, square foot, °F. Only the Schumann-Furnas formulas may be used to determine the heat- transfer coefficient and temperature histories in this type of heat exchanger.

A Bureau of Mines survey of noise from quarry production blasting was conducted at seven crushed-stone quarries, providing information on close-in noise generation, comparative instrumentation, and evaluation of the sound levels as related to blasting parameters and existing State and local noise standards. The results from this preliminary survey will be useful in the design of a complete investigation of the problem of noise from blasting. There exists an immediate need for technical guidelines for noise pollution control agencies presently working on the regulation of impulsive noise sources. This survey and results from previous work by other researchers are used to derive interim recommendations on weighting scales, generated sound levels, and instrumentation. These recommendations are based on the limited data presently available and may be modified with subsequent investigation of noise generation, propagation, structural damage, and human tolerance.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with cutter roof failure. Many of the relevant U.S. and international research studies since the late 1940&apos;s are reviewed, and summaries of recent design guides are included. Factors affecting cutter roof, such as underground stress field and rock structure around the entry, are described. Strata control techniques are also outlined. These techniques are divided into three sections: artificial support, mine structure design, and multiple-seam extraction. Other subjects covered in the report include monitoring and prediction, effect of geologic features, and mapping of adverse mining conditions. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are minimal.

Data on the cost and quantity available were developed for rutile (TiO2), which is potentially recoverable as a byproduct at sand-washing plants in the Southeastern States of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Baaed on 1969 production data, an estimated 4,300 tons of rutile could be recovered annually from plants that process more than 25,000 tons of sand per year. Rutile prices at which this resource would be available ranged upward from $262 per ton, compared with the current market value of $185 per ton.

A method for treating high-iron Arkansas bauxites for recovering both abrasive and metal-grade bauxite has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. Present practice usually produces a reject containing appreciable quantities of metal-grade bauxite; however, the processing renders the alumina in the reject unsuitable for the Bayer extraction treatment. Thus the Arkansas abrasive bauxite industry has, in the past, produced little or no metal-grade bauxite. The present investigation was made to determine the possibilities of batter utilization of those particular bauxites through recovery of the wasted metal-grade portion. The large expansion of aluminum-production facilities planned for 1951-53 makes recovery of metal-grade bauxite from presently treated abrasive and marginal abrasive ores en especially timely objective and a welcome addition to our aluminum potential. The quality of the Arkansas bauxites and the inherently associated titania content have made this material particularly attractive to the abrasives industry. however, the gradual depletion of natural abrasive-grade bauxite reserves in this area, the comparative scarcity of high-grade ore, and the difficulty of maintaining adequate reserves have necessitated blending different grades of bauxite calculated to meet specifications. Production of abrasive-grade bauxite from tile, high-iron reserves 13 becoming, increasingly necessary. In one commercial operation, producing abrasive-grade from ores averaging slightly less than 10 percent Fe2O3, approximately 2.7 tons of ore are required to produce 1 ton of abrasive-grade bauxite. The reserves of ore of this grade, however, have been considered inadequate for a long-range production, and ultimately ores averaging 12 to 15 percent Fe2O3 will have to be treated to moot the continued demands of the abrasive industry.
