Continuously monitor and record respirable dust levels underground by a reliable, sensitive, and fast-response device. Approach A light-scattering photometer, having a LED (Light Emitting Diode) light source and other significant improvements, has been designed and incorporated into a portable continuous monitor. How It Works The monitor continuously draws air into the sampling inlet through a cyclone that removes dust particles larger than respirable size. The dusty air enters the photometer vertically downward through a cylinder which is intersected by the optical system. (This cylinder appears as a circle in the drawing of the photometer.) The center of he column of dusty air intersects a beam of pulsing light from the LED, causing some of the light to be reflected, scattered, and refracted. Only the light that is scattered at an angle of about 700 from the light beam passes through a lens to the photodetector which generates an output voltage Signal proportional to the dust content in the air. The successful injection of liquids into subsurface permeable formations for production stimulation, storage, or waste disposal requires a rapid, precise, and accurate method of determining the permeability of porous solids. This report describes a method and apparatus, developed by the Bureau of Mines, that use the principle of specific-volume permeametry. Calibration of the apparatus over a wide range of permeabilities and standardization of several apparatus constants have eliminated many of the tedious calculations and problems of manipulation common to some other methods. Improvements in reproducibility and accuracy have resulted from reducing experimental measurements to one parameter--time. Specific permeabilities of reservoir rock samples are determined directly from a chart that relates elapsed time to a permeability equivalent to that determined by bubble-tube measurements.

"This repot continues the series of papers being prepared at the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, on factors involved in the leaching of ores. A list of previous publications is given in the bibliography at the end of this paper.Four factors are essential to the leaching of any copper-bearing ore: (1) A solution that will attack the copper minerals must get into the body of the ore particles; (2) the copper minerals must be dissolved by the solution; (3) the solution containing the dissolved copper must find its way out of the voids of the rocks into the main solution; and (4) the copper in solution must be recovered by some means of precipitation.This paper considers the third step -- the extraction of the water-soluble copper. From leached ores. The usual commercial practice in leaching copper ores consists of: (1) Crushing the ore to pass through a screen with approximately one-quarter or one-third inch openings; (2) charging the crushed ore into a fat; (3) adding, usually by upward percolation, a solution that will attack the copper minerals; and (4) washing the copper-laden solutions out of the ore with solutions weaker in copper than the pregnant solution, and finally with water. A countercurrent system of leaching and washing is usually employed. In some plants the solutions are circulated during leaching and washing, and in others they are not. In some plants the wash solutions are added by upward percolation, while at Chuquicamata the so-called ""piston-displacement"" method of washing is employed.The following condensed resume of the leaching cycle of the plant of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is given to present to the reader a picture of the steps involved in a typical leaching cycle. This plant was recently described in detail.4 The ore, crushed to pass openings 11/2 inches in diameter, passes over a screen with ¼-inch openings. The undersize from the screen goes to a Dorr howl classifier that removes the primary slime from the circuit. The overflow from the classifier is treated in a slime-leaching plant. The oversize of the ¼-inch screen passes through rolls, where it is crushed to pass a 3/8-inchscreen. The undersize from the 3/8-inch screen join with the coarse material from the classifier, and the combined products become the feed to the leaching vats. There are 13 concrete lead-lined leaching vats. The complete leaching cycle is 13 days. Eight tanks are under acid-iron content at all times; three are being washed, one tank is being filled, and the one is being excavated. The electrolyzed solution from the tank house, to which amount of new acid has been added, is put on the oldest tank of ore under need This solution travels from tank to tank and finally emerges from the newest ore"

"Refiners are generally considered solely as fuel producers, but actually they also comprise a group one of the largest consumers of fuel. For example, during the year 1929 the refineries-burned 51,544,000 barrels of oil as fuel, or the equivalent of over 5 per cent of the crude oil processed in that year. In addition enough other fuels - coal, natural gas, refinery or still gas, and petroleum coke - were utilized to raise the total fuel consumption based on B. t. u. equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the heat value in the total crude oil run to stills. Refineries utilize fuel chiefly as the heat-forming element distillation, but also under-boilers in the formation of steam used in refining, for the heating of buildings, and in the generation of electricity.In the early days of refining, the problem of fuel utilization and fuel economy was of scant importance to the refiners. Margins of profit were comparatively high and the major portion of the operatros1 attention was directed toward increasing their throughput. However, the keen competition that has prevailed in the refining industry over the past five years or more has taught the refiners that their expenses, one of the largest items of which is the cost of fuel, must be curtailed. Thus in 1925 the refiners used an average of 829,000 B. t. u. to refine a barrel of crude oil, wheras by 1929 this average had been reduced to 639,000 B. t. u., a decline of 23 per cent (see fig. 1)Since 1925 oil has ranked first as a refinery fuel (see fig. 2). The use of natural gas increased during 1926 and 1927 but declined in 1928 and 1929. On the other hand, the use of refinery gas has grown rapidly in importance. Coal has shown a steady decline in use at refineries since 1925. Petroleum coke has never supplied more than a very small fraction of the total fuel requirements, although there has been a steady increase in its use."

Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.0 are frequently created in underground hard rock mines. The strength of slender pillars can be estimated using empirically developed equations. However, the equations can provide variable results when the width-to-height ratios approach 0.5. This paper investigates some of the issues affecting pillar strength at low width-to-height ratios in hard brittle rock. The investigation includes an evaluation of empirical pillar strength data presented in the literature and observations of pillar performance in underground limestone mines in the eastern United States, supplemented by numerical modeling in which failure processes and sensitivity of slender pillars to variations in rock mass properties are evaluated. The results showed that the strength of slender pillars is more variable than that of wider pillars. The numerical model results demonstrated the increasing role of brittle rock failure in slender pillar strength. The absence of confinement in slender pillars can result in a fully brittle failure process, while wider pillars fail in a combined brittle and shearing mode. The onset of spalling in slender pillars occurs at or near the ultimate strength, while this is not the case for wider pillars. Slender pillars are shown to be more sensitive to the presence of discontinuities than wider pillars, which can partly explain the increased variability of slender pillar strength. Two examples are presented, which illustrate failure initiation by brittle spalling and the sensitivity of slender pillars to the presence of discontinuities.

Preliminary cleaning and separation of the sand and gravel at the dredge site with subsequent transportation to separate plants and the production and disposal of the various grades of aggregate material are also described. The geology of the deposit is summarized. A tabulated summary of costs in units of labor, power, and supplies is included.

Occurrences of titanium, zircon, and other heavy minerals are widespread in Florida. Deposits concentrated as "heavy sands" by wave and wind action have been mined an or near Atlantic coastal beaches since 1916. An important inland concentration at Trail Ridge; .believed, to have formed along an ancient share line, was disclosed by preliminary investigations (1947) by the Bureau of Mines. This report describes investigations to determine the extent and grade of "heavy-sand" concentrations in other inland stabilized dune areas in the central and northeastern parts of the peninsular region of the State (fig. 1). Portions of the central highlands south of Trail Ridge and terraces and dunes in the coastal lowlands region, east and northeast of the ridge were investigated. Holes were drilled in 10 areas (see table 1 and fig. 2) along State and County roads and on private property. They were spaced 250 to 2,000 feet. apart to obtain a cross-sectional picture of "heavy-sand" content in the dune areas. These sections were generally placed in east-west directions normal to the general trend Of the peninsula to intercept one or more of the ancient shore lines in the various areas (figs. 3 to 13, incl.). A total of 433 drive piped and 333 jet holes were drilled, and 7,293 bulk and core samples were taken. Intermediate holes were placed at closer intervals when field analysis indicated 1 percent or more of heavy minerals present. All of the holes drilled and the analysis of samples that contain 1 percent or more of heavy minerals are listed in table 2. Profiles (figs. 14 to 20, inclusive) show the more favorable concentrations, which are irregular in outline and erratic in mineral content. The highest concentrations averaged 1.0 to more than 2.0 percent heavy-mineral content, but a few individual hole samples exceeded 3.0 percent in grade.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

The Derby and Alexander Claim, located within the Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), has placer gold resources. No lode deposits are known within the area, but lode gold deposits are found within 1 1/2 mi of the WSA. In additon, rock units which contain lode gold deposits north of the WSA are found within the northern portion of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CA-030-402, encompasses 4,623 acres of BLM administered public land in Trinity County, California, about 35 mi west-northwest of Redding (fig. 1). Major access to the Tunnel Ridge vicinity is by U.S. Highway 299. Ac-cess to the WSA boundary is by a secondary paved road from Junction City and several light duty dirt and gravel roads (fig. 2). The WSA is on the southwest slope of Weaver Bally Mountain. The topography is rugged with moderate to steep slopes; elevations range from about 1,600 ft to 5,900 ft.

Overall mineral industry productive activity in Europe increased in 1965, following general upward trends in gross national product and total industrial production4 recorded. The gross national product of non-Communist Europe in market prices in 1965 was estimated at $572 billion and that of Communist Europe at $409 billion. However, the extractive sectors of the mineral industries generally did not fare as well as the processing sectors. In fact, a number of countries recorded lower production levels in this sector in 1965 than in 1964 and most countries had a lower growth rate in extractive industry output than in overall industrial output. Among the non-Communist nations of Europe, a general decline in coal production and lower levels of iron ore output in France, West Germany, and Luxembourg contributed significantly to the smaller growth rates or declines in extractive indexes. Where higher indexes were registered, this generally resulted from the performance of the petroleum and natural gas industry; exceptions were Greece, Norway, and Sweden. The decline recorded for Czechoslovakia was attributable entirely to poorer performance by that nation's coal industry.

Canister-type gas masks Pave become an essential part of the equipment of many industries, not only for use in .emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices, and this bureau bas become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.

Coal miners often handle heavy electrical power cables, weighing up to 10 kg per meter. These cables are manually lifted and attached to the mine roof to prevent damage from mobile underground equipment. Data suggest that workers who commonly perform cable handling tasks experience a high rate of lost time back injuries. In this study, six male underground miners performed a total of 12 cable-hanging tasks in standing, stooping, and kneeling postures, during which kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected. Reductions in vertical work space were found to result in a linear increase in the peak moment experienced by the lumbarspine (p<0.05). In restricted postures, peak moments were not significantly different in stooping vs. kneeling postures (p>0.05). Average lumbopelvic flexion during the tasks was highest in stooping conditions, followed by standing and kneeling exertions (p<0.05). The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1975 only by Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry, Inc., near Clayton, N.J. Production and sales information are not available for publication. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was used by manufacturers as filter media in equipment for the removal of manganese, iron and other elements from water. The University of Delaware received a grant of $17,051 from the Bureau of Mines early in 1976 to continue its studies of the effectiveness of greensand in removing metallic contaminants from waste waters.

Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960&apos;s and the first half of the 1970&apos;s. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon&apos;s small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country&apos;s sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country&apos;s oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon&apos;s refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara&apos;s capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a procedure for the design of an arch canopy for use in rehabilitating a high-roof-fall area. Only dy-namic line loading of an unbackfilled arch canopy at its crown is considered, and the procedure does not account for an asymmetrical loading condition. The evaluation of whether an arch canopy is suitable for a particular installation depends on many variables, including in-mine conditions and the engineering properties of the structure. However, a general evaluation can be based on a comparison of the arch&apos;s maximum crown deflection and a prescribed allowable crown deflection. The design procedure is based on the concept that when an arch canopy is sub-jected to impact loading at its crown and deflects from its unloaded state to maximum crown deflection, the structure absorbs strain energy, both elastic and plastic. As a result, this strain energy can be calculated from a static load-displacement diagram for the structure. The significance of this design procedure is that it gives mine personnel an analytical tool to select an arch canopy to meet the dimensional and functional requirements of a mine entry and a prescribed allowable crown deflection.
