This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. A device was developed that measures dynamic stress (ultrasonic energy) transfer through installed rock bolts, a measure that is directly proportional to the degree of grout bonding of the bolt to the mine roof structure and thus the ability of the bolt to bear static stress. The rock bolt bond tester (RBBT) is a hand-held portable device that shows three ranges of bolt bond condition; i.e., one-third (Bad bond), two-thirds (marginal), or fully bonded. These are shown respectively by a red, yellow, or green light that displays for 4 s. RBBT performance was verified with 2 1/2-to 8-ft bolts installed in various types 0f mine roof structures (sands tone, shale, and boney coal-mud), and 15 now being tested by the Bureau of Mines in mines across the United States. The unit is about the size of a five-battery flashlight and contains the transducer electronics, and battery pack. The RBBT is designed for extreme ease of operation, requiring only manual contact with the bolt and signal read-out. The batteries are rechargeable and the package is designed for durability in a mine environment.

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. In 1979 and 1980, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 15,600 acre (6,310 ha) Freel Peak RARE II area (No. 5271) in the Lake Tahoe Management Unit. This study by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for economic mineral resources in the area is slight. The only mineralized structures in the area consists of two quartz veins. One quartz vein, at the Mountain Top Mine (fig. 1), located by Fred Denner in 1932, is estimated to contain 2,000 tons (1,800 t) of silver and copper-bearing resources. Chip samples from the vein averaged 0.61 oz silver per ton (20.91 g/t), and 1.59 percent copper. The narrow vein is not economically mineable. The other quartz vein is poorly exposed and contains traces of molybdenum. A second reported molybdenum occurrence could not be substantiated.

No producing or developing mines nor known mineral resources are in the Lower Saline Valley Wilderness Study Area. The inactive Bonanza Prospect has low potential for copper-gold-silver resources. Stone and sand and gravel deposits in the WSA do not constitute mineral resources because transportation costs to major markets are prohibitive. INTRODUCTION The Lower Saline Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA) covers 2,241 acres in southeast California adjacent to and west of Death Valley National Monument (fig. 1). Access to the WSA is by the Saline Valley gravel road 28 mi northerly from its junction with State Highway 190. The junction is about 35 mi southeast of Lone Pine, CA. The WSA is characterized by moderate to steep, sparsely-vegetated slopes; elevation ranges from about 1,800 ft to 3,560 ft.

An instrument using a gamma-ray backscatter technique for determining the weight-percent incombustibles content of coal dust and rock dust mixtures in coal mines has been built and tested. The unit gives a direct readout in per-cent incombustibles for coal mine dust mixtures containing between 50 and 100 percent incombustibles; calibration of the device requires using a sample of the rock dust employed; this is usually limestone but occasionally dolomite or gypsum. A small americium-24l source is used with a scintillation detector whose output feeds a rate meter. The source-detector geometry used was chosen to reduce the effects of variation in bulk density. Accuracy of the system is within ±3 percent for most mixtures. The instrument is portable and completely self-contained; the rechargeable batteries supply power for 300 to 400 determinations.

Many mining operations rely on retention bulkheads to provide a barrier between impounded water and active mine workings. However, bulkhead failures can cause catastrophic flooding that puts the underground workforce at risk. Underground observations and evaluations of existing bulkheads indicate that a systems approach is required when building an underground water or slurry retention system. In addition to engineering the bulkhead, the designer must ensure the quality control of materials and workmanship of the bulkhead, the reaction of the mine strata when exposed to water under pressure, and methods to monitor the performance of the retention system. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), with the assistance of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), conducted an extensive review of bulkhead permits submitted to the MSHA Technical Support office in Bruceton, PA. In addition, the researchers visited accessible bulkhead installations at undeground mining operations to gather information related to construction practices, maintenance issues, and monitoring and emergency response procedures. Several key items were identified that must be considered when permitting the installation of an underground fluid retention system.

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. This report presents information developed during Bureau of Mines contract H0242016, "Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection Systems" from May, 1974 through June, 1975. Purpose of the metal and nonmetal health and safety project was to evaluate mine shaft fire and smoke hazard problems, and to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, reliable mine shaft fire protection system that would protect against such hazards and would be applicable to a majority of metal and nonmetal mine shafts, including raises and winzes, especially in deep mines. Program effort proceeded through five phases, culminating in the successful in-mine fire demonstration of a prototype system. In addition to this final report, a film is available which depicts components of the system and its successful shaft fire testing at an underground mine.

This report summarizes the work performed under the USBM Contract No. J0245001. The purpose of this work was to expand and improve the scope and accuracy of the method developed under USBM Contract No. J0113056 for the prediction of the number of overexposed workers in the mining industry. A significant portion of the noise data were acquired during mine visits-that took place in the-course of this contract. These data were obtained with time-resolved dosimeters which among other things store a time history of the sampled noise for an eight hour work period. The remainder of the noise data have been obtained from MSHA files and from other BoM-sponsored projects. The report reviews the prediction model, discusses the model's assumptions and approximations, describes the function of the developed software, offers typical examples on the use of the software and includes plots of the newly acquired noise data records.

A procedure, which can be performed in the field by nonanalytical personnel, is given for sensitive spot tests for detecting tellurium or selenium. The expressed need of a field test for detecting small amounts of tellurium, which may be accompanied by relatively large amounts of selenium, has led to the development of this method. Tellurium search has been impeded by the lack of a satisfactory test from the standpoint of sensitivity and specificity. A quantitative laboratory method exists, but it is expensive and relatively laborious. Several other qualitative tests are known, but they require unstable solutions, which must be freshly prepared for use, and a greater variety of laboratory equipment. The particular advantages of the test described are its simplicity and the stability of the reagents required, there-fore is is well adapted for field use. Also, this test was found to be of practical use in the analytical laboratory when screening samples, thereby reducing analytical costs. The roughly quantitative interpretation of the results can save time by indicating the approximate size of the sample taken for a quantitative determination.

This volume is the first of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume II: Dragline Model, Volume III: Mine Coordinate Generator System, and Volume IV: User's Manual for OPMHS/2. This report deals with the development of a geological model for surface mine planning. The most common orebody modeling techniques are described. A brief review of geostatistical theory and concepts is presented. A geostatistical option for orebody modeling is developed and validated. Computer programs and sample outputs are appended.

Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled sur¬face hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diam¬eter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a verti¬cal depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 m (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

The commonly used exact methods (1-2) to determine the WL measure the total a activity or the total number of a counts during three preselected time periods. Due to the half-lives involved (TRaB = 26.8 min, TRaC = 19.7) I these methods take 3S minutes to complete the a activity Ra measurements. Methods using the total a counts, obtained at times less than about one RaB half-life after the end of sampling run into statistical 214 problems. These methods are almost blind to RaB (Pb214) as a consequence of its relatively long half period (see above) and the fact that RaB is a ß emitter. The way out of this dilema is to measure RaB directly through its ß activity. Since RaB's daughter Rae (Bi214) is also a ß emitter, the two f3 spectra have to be separated to obtain RaB alone. How this is accomplished 1s described in subsequent sections describing the theory of the IWLM and its calibration. 2.0 THEORY The IWLM samples air for two minutes and counts this airs ample for two minutes starting 3 sec after the end of the sampling period. The instrument has three channels. The lower a channel, the upper a channel, and one ß channel. The total RaA counts observed are accumulated in the lower a channel, the total RaC? counts are stored in the upper a channel. The total ß counts from RaB and RaC are recorded in the ß channel. These three quantities are functions of NA, NB, and NC, the unknown concentrations

Graphite occurs in many places in the United States, but previous to 1914 the domestic production amounted to only 15 to 20 per cent of the natural graphite consumed in this country. Including artificial, graphite, the proportion was about 25 per cent. During the World War the production of both natural and artificial graphite increased until, in 1918 it, contributed more than one-half of the available supply, and since 1919 the proportion has not fallen below 40 per cent. Except during the war period, however, this apparently increasing independence has not been due to any large increase in production from domestic mines. It simply reflects a larger output of artificial graphite and reduced imports of Ceylon lung and chip, grades which have never been produced in substantial quantity in the United States. DOMESTIC DEPOSITS3 American graphite deposits, though numerous and often large, are characteristically low-grade. They constitute an abundant source of potential supply, but in normal times they have proved relatively costly to work, and even at the same price the various products have never been able wholly to displace certain imported qualities, notably crucible grades from Ceylon and pencil graphite from Mexico.

"Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. He has brought to this work a wide knowledge of accountancy, supplemented by a background of direct contact with the slate industry, and his presence at the various conferences has been of great advantage in clearing up difficulties. A design for a laser-powered optical interferometer, using a specimen whose thermal expansion is to be measured as part of the optical system, was conceived and applied in a prototype dilatometer. The object of thin work was the development of an absolute dilatometer capable of use at elevated temperature, particularly above 1,000° C. The prototype has been operated at temperatures exceeding 1,510° C. Results obtained with this device agree within 2.5 percent with the published data for the coefficient of expansion of columbium.

The general or macroclimate of the study sites in western North Dakota is characterized by rapid and sometimes extreme daily and day-to-day temperature fluctuations, rainfall patterns which are erratic in spatial and temporal distribution and intensity, generally low relative humidity, plentiful sunshine, nearly continuous air movement, and a relatively short frost-free period. Of particular relevance to plant growth and productivity is the mosaic of microclimates: these microclimates are affected by landform (convex and concave surfaces); exposure; slope angle, length and aspect; soil color, texture and surface cover (litter), and vegetation cover. The most critical plant growth governing factor in this region is available water. It is determined principally by water input (precipitation) and water loss (evapotranspiration) which is increased by high temperatures, wind, and poor litter and vegetation cover. While spring and fall precipitation is generally gentle and soil-soaking summer rains frequently come in the form of intensive, soil-washing, localized convective thunderstorms of short duration. Due to the convective nature of these storms, summer rainfall is particularly affected by regional topography; southwest slopes and crests often receive more rainfall since these storms usually move in a northeasterly direction. The water loss due to runoff and consequent soil erosion arc major problems resulting from such "cloudbursts". Previous fall precipitation (September - October) when added to current seasonal precipitation (March - August) was found to be significantly correlated (r-.93) with plant production. Winter precipitation (snowfall) is relatively light as the prevailing weather is dominated by dry polar air masses from the north. The nearly continuous wind is responsible for removing snow from open exposures and depositing it in depressions and windbreaks. Although the winter precipitation is not a large component of the total annual precipitation, conservation of that which does occur would contribute to plant production during the following growing season. Generally clear skies over the region facilitate receipt of abundant sunshine at the earth's surface. While good for early season soil warming and plant photosynthesis, this abundant sunshine coupled with long days and nearly continuous wind is responsible for evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation by an average of six inches between June' and September. On a local (micro) scale, the water deficit is most severe on the southern exposures which receive the most direct (most effective) solar radiation and therefore are warmer than other exposures. On a broader scale, it was found that ambient temperature extremes were slightly but significantly greater in the town of Beulah in the Knife River Valley than at the upland test sites, This may have been due to the difference in topography and/or the "urban heat island" effect. It is known that air temperatures in large cities may be 2° to 4°C higher than that of the surrounding countryside. It is also well known that basins, depressions or valleys are sinks for cold air masses and are often subject to frosts not occurring on adjacent upland sites.
