In dragline coal mining operations, throw blasting is used for the controlled placement of overburden to maximise coal exposure rates or to minimise overburden removal costs. This may necessitate sacrificing thin coal seams, generally less than one metre in thickness, which are often present in proximity to the main coal seam. This represents not only a significant loss of potential revenue and profit but also a waste of a valuable energy resource.

The research conducted previously on Shock-Tunnel Waveform Analysis gave a brief insight into the propagation of a shockwave within a shock-tunnel compared to that of an open air arena test. As a refresher, a shock-tunnel is an energy channeling device used to simulate the effects of a large scale detonation with significantly smaller charge weights; having the ability to conduct tests in this fashion can greatly reduce the costs of testing products.

Detonation propagates in the subject blasting agent at about 2.7 km/sec when it is heavily primed but explosion propagates in it at only about 0.43 km/sec when it is lightly primed. When propagating at 0.43 km/sec, it produces a borehole pressure that is slightly less than 1 kb, but no yellow fumes or other sign of incomplete reaction. It is a pumped AN/emulsion blend to which additional water is added by circumferential injection at the inlet of the hose through which it is pumped.

Although 3D fragmentation analysis is a relatively new technology, it is rapidly gaining popularity among mid-sized mining operations and quarries. The results provided by this technology are adequate, but like other picture analytic methods, it mainly focuses on the surface of the muck-pile. These results are incomplete or incorrect as falling rocks and boulders from the stemming zone are constantly influencing the muck-pile surface. This obstacle can be overcome by collecting a large amount of data and analyzing it over time. However, this is not always an ideal solution, as companies prefer to receive results immediately after the blast to make resource allocation decisions, production planning, and plan for the next blast. Over the past year and a half, we have conducted a study on various muck-pile fragmentation analysis results from 3D modeling in Central Europe, comparing the results between the surface and inside of the muck-pile. By analyzing multiple shot results, we were able to determine the percentage difference between the top and inside fragment sizes and calculate the range of correction coefficients for different rock types. Applying these coefficients to a single muck-pile surface fragmentation analysis allows us to determine the actual fragment sizes inside the muck-pile. This enables us to make informed decisions regarding loading, hauling, material mixing, and proper crushing or milling. By overcoming the limitation of surface-based analysis, we can now accurately evaluate blast performance, which leads to better processes optimization and increase efficiency. As 3D fragmentation analysis becomes more widespread, we expect to see even more benefits for the mining and quarrying industry

Black powder has been used in fireworks since the 10 th century in China. To this day, black powder still has a variety of uses, including fireworks, and remains relatively unchanged. Black powder is used in the firework shell to help produce the effect and in the lift charge to propel the shell skyward. The performance of fireworks shells used in displays varies greatly. In fireworks shells, there are two different black powder charges that differ in construction based on the desired performance of the shell. The two charges consist of the lift charge and the break charge. The lift charge is the first to fire and propels the shell out of the mortar. The break charge is the second to fire and is initiated after a delay from the lift charge; its purpose is to burst the shells effect over the desired area of the sky. The lift charge provides the shell with its initial velocity by pressurizing the mortar below the shell body. The pressurization process is violent and occurs in fractions of a second. The purpose of these experiments are to better understand the pressures sustained in fireworks mortars during the firing process. Mortars and shells vary by size and weight. Pressures in each mortar were monitored at various heights along the mortar to provide a pressure profile during shell lift. A high-speed camera was used to measure shell exit velocity near the mortar’s muzzle. This information was correlated with the size and weight of shells and their respective lift charges

Blasters face a long list of tasks to execute daily—from vehicle inspections to blast design and layout, hole loading and tie-in, securing the site, and finally, safely executing the blast. Good practices and, in most cases, regulations and requirements necessitate documenting their work, specifically their blast report. While some blasters use paper forms, others use electronic means to streamline the process. The authors have served as attorneys and expert witnesses in representing companies and individual blasters in numerous administrative and legal matters in which documentation of the blaster’s work was both critical and detrimental to the effectiveness of defending their work. This paper discusses in a case-study manner the authors' observations concerning good blast report format, specific observations around electronic and paper report completion, record-keeping, seismograph setup and recordkeeping, video and photo documentation, internal auditing, and other topics related to documenting the blast. The paper aims to serve as a discussion guide for blasters to improve their blast record-keeping process, develop better practices that effectively document their work, and allow them to defend their work should a claim arise concerning their operations.

Blasting has been completed when the lawyer calls to say that a landowner has filed a suit alleging damages to the roof of his home. Mitigation talks fail to produce an adequate resolution and the case goes to court. The blaster has pictures of the area made after the blasting was done showing the good condition of the roof. However the judge fails to allow the photographs to be entered as evidence and the homeowner wins the case.

A dozer operator at a surface gold mine accidentally drove a D10 off the side of a highwall. The blade of the dozer caught on the lip of a catch bench 60 ft. (18.3 m), down stopping its descent. The operator scrambled to safety in fear that the dozer would not hold.

Vibration control is affected by many factors which are difficult to isolate and evaluate. Occasionally a circumstance occurs in which one factor appears to predominate and its effects can be evaluated. Changing rock characteristic or lithologic variation is one of these factors or parameters. In a recent seismic monitoring project, lithologic variation in the form of hard lenses occurring suddenly and randomly in the rock to be excavated caused sudden and large increases in vibration level. Data are presented to illustrate these effects, and procedures used to control these effects are described.

Occidental Oil Shale Inc. has spent the last eight years at its Logan Wash. mine near DeBeque, Colorado, developing its modified in-situ oil shale process for obtaining oil from oil shale. Modified in-situ technology involves large underground chambers, or retorts, which are formed by mining out a minimal volume of rock to allow explosive expansion of the surrounding rock into tile mined void volumes. The resulting rubblized retort volume must contain a fairly uniform particle size distribution and void distribution to permit maximum oil recovery during subsequent in-situ processing operations. The more uniform the rubblized volume of particles, the more oil recovery obtained during processing. The processing involves first igniting the top of the retort and then. injecting air into the top of the retort to drive the combustion front downward through the entire rubblized volume. The oil is continuously collected at the bottom of the retort during the processing.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have let a contract to Sierra Blanca Constructors for a design / build contract along 38 miles US 70 in Lincoln County, New Mexico. The project will improve safety of travel along the corridor and facilitate the adopted economic development goals of the state. Proposed improvements include widening the existing highway from two lanes to four lanes, providing left turn lane options at selected locations, improving access for businesses and residences, aesthetically enhancing retaining walls, improving storm drainage and replacing the existing pavement with a 30 year mechanistic imperialistic perpetual pavement design. The US 70 Hondo Valley highway project is situated in a narrow valley with steep limestone walls, passes along a Scenic Byway and numerous historic ranching communities with structures that date back three centuries. The scope of work included requirements to monitor and mitigate blasting, noise, and vibrations. The contract was very presumptive with regard to blasting design and procedures. These included visual impact mitigation to treat and stabilize slope cuts, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act protecting roosting and nesting birds from airblast, and the protection of historic and cultural features such as acequias, wells, and structures. Public involvement affecting the rock blasting design has come from citizen task forces and committees concerned with highwall aesthetics and preserving the scenic byway and cultural resources. Constraints placed on the blasting program from agencies and the communities are often at odds. For instance, blasting must produce stable yet natural-looking walls to preserve aesthetics. Restrictions have been placed on pre-splitting and smooth-wall blasting yet safe slope are of the highest priority. This paper presents details of the design/build process undertaken by the contractors to conduct blast rock in an environmentally sensitive region. Blast designs consistent with good construction practices and used to comply with the many federal and state highway stipulations are described.

The use of shock tube in the blasting industry is relatively well characterized and understood within the realms to which it is used. Non-conventional uses of shock tube within the EOD and the Aerospace Industry however has not been as widely researched and published. Characteristics of shock tube such as its reliability, simplicity and its non-electric nature make it ideal for functioning or driving mechanical mechanisms, detonators, and timing devices. Outlined in the text are the performance characteristics of shock tube in an array of atmospheric environments including pressures ranging from ambient to 100,000 ft equivalent atmosphere. In addition the useful exit work energy or impulse of the shock tube for driving these various EOD and Aerospace mechanisms is published as a function of tube lengths and atmospheric pressures. Of particular interest to these devices is the required length of shock tube needed to produce the steady state detonation energies and the accompanying properties of the shock tube at these lengths. Various sources publish an arbitrary run distance for steady state detonation and output some where between 20 cm and 1.0 meter. Statistical and experimental evidence with in the text show these numbers to be low and provides an updated reference for shock tubes usage in nonconventional situations.

Blast resistant structural design continues to be a research area of major concern for governments around the world due to explosive threats from both state and non-state actors. Glass and aluminum curtain wall systems are commonly used to clad the exterior of government and commercial structures, allowing light into the building, regulating the interior environment, and providing an aesthetically pleasing exterior. These systems are likely to fail when exposed to sudden, high-pressure events such as the purposeful or accidental detonation of explosives. Engineers have designed blast resistant curtain walls and structural elements to reduce the likelihood and severity of failure, but the design tools and testing mechanisms commonly used in the process may not accurately model or simulate actual blast conditions at all ranges. In blast resistant structural design, the origin of a shock wave is typically assumed to be in the far-field, creating a wave that is nearly planar and parallel to at least one face of the target. Shock is applied evenly and immediately across the entire impacted surface. However, the source of real-life blasts is often very close to the target structure, and the assumption of far-field planar shock does not always apply. Mid-field blasts exhibit qualities different from those assumed about far-field shocks, specifically a hemispherical shock that produces different peak pressures, impulse curves, oblique reflections, and Mach stems across a target. This paper will examine mid-field shock effects from scaled distances of 2.5 to 4 13 (6.3 to 10.1 13) on a tall, scaled target by measuring reflected and incident pressure, impulse, and shock velocity across the target. Results will be compared to theoretical blast parameter equations and empirical data used by the industry. Possible effects of mid-field blasts on structures and further research ideas will be suggested.

This paper describes a lightning warning system (LWS) in operation at the U.S. Bureau of Mines' (USBM) Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) from December, 1989 to April, 1991. An electric field mill measured the DC atmospheric electrostatic field. Also, an economical on-line weather data service provided lightning location maps and other weather information. A system such as this can significantly improve the safety of explosive handling. The use of these two methods addresses the detection of thunderclouds building overhead and the prediction and tracking of developed storms. Warning reliability of the system was very good when data from both sources were considered. Experience showed, however, that use of either system alone would not provide adequate reliability in most situations. Some problems occurred with the field mill and there is some question whether the instrument is compatible with harsh mining environments or could be made portable. Another method ' of measuring electric field based on fiber optics is discussed. This technology may be able to overcome the problems with field mills.

Determining the origins of air overpressure has been a long-debated topic within the explosives engineering community. Historically, it has been accepted that the initial face movement gave rise to air displacement, resulting in an air overpressure pulse. Later research proposed that the air overpressure pulse resulted from the shockwave rapidly propagating through and impacting the quarry face. Most recently, researchers have derived that air overpressure is associated with the gas phase from which a gaseous product from explosives rapidly pours out the quarry face under high pressure. Significant research has strongly indicated that the time at which the air overpressure pulse exits the face fails to coincide with either the arrival of the shockwave at the free face or the initial face movement. Research has consistently shown that the shockwave arrival at the face occurs before the air overpressure pulse leaves the face. Therefore, to best determine which blast mechanism contributed to the initial air overpressure pulse, testing was aimed at verifying the precise time at which the air overpressure exited the faces compared to when the face first moved. This research describes tests using scaled concrete blocks, which provided the ability to control the key parameters necessary for the research to be successfully concluded. Black powder was selected as the energetic material to eliminate the production of the detonation wave while still inducing other gas-producing effects. The components evaluated were air blast arrival times in front of the face, the initial movement of the blast face, the precise initiation time of the blast hole, timing of pressurization within the rock mass (between borehole and face, or adjacent borehole), and the speed of sound in the air. A detailed timeline was created which portrays the actions within the blast to promote an understanding of the sequencing of events. The results showed that the initial face movement occurred at 17.57 milliseconds (ms) while the calculated time at which the air overpressure exited the face occurred at 7.07 ms. The large disparity continues to reaffirm the premise that the origin fails to coincide with the air pressure pulse. Average pressurization through the block occurred at a rate of 341.23 feet per second (104.15 meters per second) which resulted in the gas release pulse being calculated to exit the face between 4.41 and 6.21 ms. This pulse correlates more accurately with the air overpressure origin timing which will be the focus of continued research. Knowing the precise origin of blast-induced air overpressure will assist in being able to better control it through appropriate blast design.

Emulsions have been developed for over forty years to become the most common water-resistant explosives used in the mining industry. An emulsion is a common commodity, with many examples in our day to day lives of one immiscible liquid dispersed in another. They have varying degrees of stability from a few seconds to years. What makes their application in explosives unique is twofold. They contain a high concentration of salts in the dispersed phase and also have a far larger volume of dispersed phase than continuous phase. The continuous phase contains at least 75% by weight of an oxidizer such as ammonium nitrate dissolved in water. The crystallization point of these solutions is often >60oC which means that the formation of the emulsion has to occur at an elevated temperature. Once the emulsion is cooled, its structure helps to prevent the formation of crystals in an otherwise unstable system. At room temperature there is a considerable potential for the small oxidizer droplets to crystallize which is countered by the strength of the oil layer and also the size of the emulsion droplet. If the emulsion droplet is too large then crystals can form which may lead to rapid deterioration of the emulsion and overall crystallization, accompanied by a temperature rise as the heat of crystallization is released from the emulsion. The size of the emulsion droplet is critical in preventing crystal growth and subsequent droplet coalescence and emulsion break down. One method of examining emulsions and understanding their structure is to use optical microscopy to measure droplet size and also emulsion deterioration from shearing, temperature cycling and when contaminants are introduced, such as detergents, different oil types, coating agents and dust particles. Originally built between 1913 and 1916, the Ashton Dam & Hydroelectric Facility has experienced various seepage and piping incidents since completion. Ashton Dam is located within 15 miles (24 km) of the historical Teton Dam failure site and about 2.3 miles (3.7 km) west of Ashton, Idaho. Numerous repairs conducted over the years ranged from filling sinkholes on the crest of the dam to placement of rockfill on the upstream slope to improve seismic stability. In addition, the existing low level outlet works was grouted full and abandoned in 1991 due to significant vibrations induced on the dam during its operation.

Does anyone have any definitive information on vibration limits for damage to well casings near blasting? Also, are people using self-imposed limits when approaching cased wells? I can only tell you what I have personally done with success. Often in new construction in hard rock, the well is drilled before the foundation is excavated and before the ditch for the water line is excavated. These both require drilling and blasting. Under these circumstances when blasting for the ditch for the waterline we will drill right up to within 10 inches (not feet) of the well casing. We drill line holes the width of the ditch, then about a foot from this, another row of trim holes then as we move away from the casing holes for 1 1/4 inch stick powder for about three rows then as we get further still, we can load with ANFO. I do not have vibration data for this but my experience has been that as long as you are not displacing the material into the casing that no damage is done. These typically are steel casings for residential water service.
