"There has akvays been plenty of discussion around the ‘accuracy of pyrotechnic detonators withmost recognised manufacturers claiming a variability of arourid 1% or less for their ‘superaccurate’ pyrotechnic based detonators. It is only now being understood that this 1% variabilitycan have serious adverse effects on blast performance. For example a 1% accurate 500millisecond shock tube detonator can fire anywhere between 485ms and 515ms. When wecouple these rather inaccurate ‘accurate’ detonators with short delays on surface, such as a 17millisecond connector, the probability of delay crowding and even out of sequence firing is quitehigh."

Repelling charges are small explosive charges detonated to frighten and drive fish away from a blasting zone just prior to detonation of a major explosive charge. Use of repelling charges has been recommended by natural resource agencies to mitigate the effects of submerged explosives. Blasting companies have used this technique in a "good faith effort" to reduce potential damages to aquatic resources. It has been assumed that noise or pressure generated by the small charge will drive fish from the immediate area, thereby reducing impacts from the much larger and potentially more-damaging blast.

In March of 2001, Barrick Goldstrike became the first surface gold operation in North America to evaluate the advantages of electronic detonators. A detailed study was conducted to quantify the benefits of the use of electronic detonators to the downstream excavation, crushing and ore processing operations. In the past, cap and fuse has been the only economical and efficient initiation system capable of providing sequential timing, ease of loading and hookup, and unlimited borehole number for backstope rounds. Unfortunately, in spite of these advantages, several negative factors inherent to the system have always been noted. Due to the long, narrow nature of backstope rounds at the Sunshine Mine, the cap and fuse system results in very long, inaccurate delay times. The system was also occasionally unreliable under all the conditions encountered, which in turn could cause potential safety hazards.

Mass blasting of open stopes and pillars is a normal operating practice at Isa Mine. Three main parameters are used to classify the types of mass blasts. These are type of explosive used, blasthole diameter and system of initiation. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are currently employed. The advantages gained by large firings are many. More efficient utilization of manpower, due to the concentrated and continuous charging, is achieved. There is no requirement for men to re-enter areas where localised ground conditions may have deteriorated and exposure of ringfirers to stope voids is reduced.

The continuity of the flow and stages within the mining process is essential to achieve success in its operation and results, especially when it comes to a gold mine. During the first seven months of 2022, crushing at the Morro do Ouro Mine had 19 stops in the primary crusher due to equipment blockage/obstruction, this could be due to the size of the material that was blasted with explosives and fed. The feeding of coarse material to the crushing plant impacts the operation in several ways, for example, premature wear of the equipment, reduction in the supply of the remainder of the beneficiation, reduction of the buffer pile and damage to the conveyed belt. In a mine located far from the community, the fragmentation improvement is mainly related to load increments or some other relatively simple change. However, when it comes to a mine located close to communities, alterations of this type must be analyzed in detail, as it can have an impact mainly in relation to vibration and flyrock. Aiming to improve the efficiency of the blasting, mainly in relation to the result of fragmentation, a project was created to improve the efficiency of the blasting with a focus on reducing the crushing stoppage and reducing the amount of material discarded due to inadequate granulometry. During the evolution of the project, several improvement solutions were proposed, for example adjustment of the power factor in relation to the geological characteristics of the rock mass, drainage, blasting geometry, vibration reduction techniques and several operational improvements. By using the techniques and methods identified as improvements during the project, it was possible to observe and quantify improvements in relation to the fragmentation of the blast. During the months of January to July 2022 there were 19 events. It was estimated that at this rate there would be 14 more blockage events, but there were only 3 events and that meant a 79% reduction in blockage. In addition to the reduction in crushing shutdown events, there was also a 53% reduction in the amount of ore that is discarded due to inadequate granulometry and, with that, the feed rate of the grinding system was able to reach the maximum feed limit due to the material being fed to the mill well fragmented, contributing to increase the production and productivity of the beneficiation process at the Morro do Ouro Mine in Paracatu-Minas Gerais-Brazil.

Calculation of response spectra for blast induced vibrations is necessary to fully understand and in some instances comply with frequency or distance related safe blasting criteria. Fortunately, micro-computer systems costing less than $5000 (such as that described herein) can be programmed to calculate response spectra. This system will calculate response spectra from paper as well as FM tape records. It both digitizes (prepares the record for computer calculation) as well as calculates. Programs for the calculation have been written in BASIC, an easy to understand language used with word processors. In addition to describing the equipment and operation of the micro computer the paper will discuss the process of and rules for digitization, use of the computer for record production and will present a simple physical model for understanding dynamic structural response.

The purpose of the Solid Medium Controlled Blasting Technique and Its Applications is to have the inside of the vessel-shaped framework (e.g: oil tank , water pool, gas chamber, chimney, water tower, grain warehouse and etc.) or the one side of the thin wall-shaped structure(e.g: steel bar concrete wall and etc.), both of which are intended to be demolished, inserted with the required solid medium (e.g: soil , sand , coal, salt and etc.) ,in which there is a certain mass density, and then through which the blasting energy is transferred to fulfill the blasting task. For such a technique, it is necessary to bury the explosives into the inserted solid medium and then to start the explosion to blast the intended target into pieces. The filling of the solid medium may be done mechanically or by man. Compared with the water pressure blasting technique, this one has the characteristics of good effect. wide application, simplified construction procedure , safe and reliable operation and small vibration (less vibration than water pressure blasting by 80% to 90%)in particular without any flying stones, thus resulting in better and comprehensive social and economickfficiency.

"A variety of initiation modes are currently in use. This includes initiation by single ormultiple detonators and boosters, by detonating cords of varying strengths, and bycombinations of cords and boosters. A lack of clear understanding of the role of initiationon detonation characteristics often leads to under-utilization of the explosives system inblasting. This paper reviews the current practice of initiation in packaged and bulkexplosive products. It illustrates the effect of various types of initiation on energy releasecharacteristics in emulsion and ANFO, through calibrated underwater energy tests. Itcompares energy release under end-inidadon against side-inidadon condition for variousinitiator strengths. The effect of confinement on these characteristics has also beeninvestigated. It is shown that side-initiadon by detonating cord results, in most cases, insignificant degradation of detonation properties. This study also provides guidelines forselecting the optimum mode of initiation for various blasting situations."

The implementation of presplit perimeter control in underground mining as a method to decrease dilution yields positive benefits throughout the current and future mining cycles. A case study to understand the benefits of reducing overbreak and underbreak in a cut and fill mining cycle was performed to quantify the reduction in backbreak. The study was performed in a control section of the mine where a presplit perimeter control design was utilized for a length of heading. This control heading was then compared to the existing standard blasting design within the same mining zone. The comparison included multiple aspects of the mining advance including overbreak, dilution of waste, dilution of Cemented Rock Fill, bolt counts, and cycle times. Once mining in the control section was completed and mining commenced in adjacent headings, blast damage due to blast design could be quantified.

Because of its safety, being easy to handle, relatively inexpensive and containing a lot of energy, ANFO is the most popular and widely used explosive in Turkey as well as other countries in the world. According to change dated May 14th 1999 on the regulation 87/12028 related with explosives, blasters are not allowed to mix ammonium nitrate and fuel oil in the tield to make ANFO. Instead of this, they have been forced to use the ready ANFO prepared by explosive producer firms. As a result of this obligation, the use of technical nitrate for agricultural purpose and mixing AN and fuel oil in unsuitable conditions have been prevented. Indeed, wrong mixture means waste of energy and money.

Rietspruit Opencast Services was one of the first opencast coal mines to successfully employ cast blasting to aid in the burden removal operation. Initial work on cast blasting began at the mine in 1980 and has developed to a stage where approximately 26% of the total burden material is cast to a point where handling by draglines is no longer required.
