Drilling operations are a vital component of surface mining, directly influencing productivity, safety, and cost efficiency. This paper explores a multi-faceted approach to drill optimization, focusing on minimizing delays, and enhancing operational effectiveness. Key areas of inefficiency such as shift changes, fuel and water delays, and time lost between drilling holes are analyzed to identify actionable improvements. Equipment related factors, including the frequency of drill bit and drill steel changes, as well as the condition of deck bushings, are evaluated for their impact on downtime and performance consistency. Additionally, the integration of smooth drives and shock subs is examined for their role in reducing vibration related wear and improving drilling precision. Optimization of pattern approach strategies is highlighted as a means to reduce non-productive movement and align drilling with blast design more effectively. To support continuous improvement and accountability, the implementation of a driller scorecard is proposed. This tool enables the measurement of individual performance based on key operational metrics, fostering a culture of data driven management. Through a combination of field data analysis and best practice recommendations, this study provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing drilling productivity in mining operations. The findings aim to support mine operators in achieving higher efficiency, reducing operational costs, and extending equipment life through targeted optimization strategies.

Because of greatly increased timing accuracy, electronic detonator systems are a well-known and widely accepted major tool to control and reduce ground vibration. At a Southeastern quarry the authors found that the use of electronic detonators improved the reliability of the well known cubed root scaled distance equation for determining air blast. In addition, the authors noticed significant correlations between selected major peak particle velocity frequencies and air blast magnitudes. The major peak particle velocity frequency alone is a close approximation to air blast magnitudes. This relationship is not as significant or not always evident when standard pyrotechnic initiation systems are used.

The dead-pressing phenomenon in emulsion explosives is wellknown. Research work on this subject has been carried out at the Swedish Detonic Research Foundation for the last few years. Several experiments with emulsion explosives under dynamic pressure condition have been carried out both in iron pipes and in blast holes in rock. The main object was to study the critical amplitude and duration of the pressure causing the explosive to be dead-pressed.

As we begin the pre-blast survey we need to decide on the number of holes needed for production and a detailed highwall inspection. The survey consists of checking the highwall and placement of barrier cones. At the Elmhurst Chicago Stone Company, Barbers Corner Plant, we use 18-24" orange highway type safety cones. These cones are easily noticed because of their high visibility color in all weather conditions and are placed approximately 20-25 feet from the face and approximately 50 feet apart along the highwall, then the area is checked for back break, under cut, over hang, surface filled area and clay area. This deposit is unique because of the number of clay filled areas and slip seams that meanders through the deposit plus a fault that runs North-Northwest and South-Southeast. This particular limestone deposit is overlaid with glacial sand and gravel and the top weathered stone wanders plus or minus 10 feet in 1400 feet.

The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a contract study of the hazards associated with surface mining.! Part of this effort involved an analysis of surface mining accidents associated with blasting activities. For this purpose, 71 reports of accidents investigated by the Bureau of Mines or the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), covering the period from 1962 to 1976, were collected and analyzed. In addition, blasting accident frequencies for the period 1973-1976 were extracted from the central computer files maintained by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) in Denver, Colorado. This paper presents a preview of the findings, which are treated in more detail in the final report.

In the mining industry ANFO continues to be the primary source of explosive energy. The three most commonly used loading methods are bulk, pour in 50 lb. multiwall bags and cylindrical shaped wet hole bags. Each loading method has its advantages. Each method has certain disadvantages which limit its effectiveness. The expandable bag system developed by ECONEX overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional bulk, pour in bags and wet hole package products.

Run up is a factor in Linear Shaped Charge (LSC) cutting for which an account must be made. It occurs on the initiation segment of the charge, and the cutting performance during this period is significantly lower. Previous investigations by the UMR Explosives Group observed that similar effects occur not only with LSCs but a wide range of other explosives applications, including explosive-driven flux-compression generators. Prior to this investigation, it was believed that the main contributing factors to run up were from the combined effects of explosive run up (detonation pressure), lack of confinement at the free, initiation end of the charge, and penetrator transition from segmented pieces to a long-rod penetrator blade. As an initial step to understanding the mechanics of LSC run up, a series of investigations was performed in which the testing series was divided into several sub-categories (explosive detonation pressure run up, lack of confinement and long-rod penetrator concept) in order to reveal the effect of each on the run up. Predominantly, commercially manufactured LSCs were used for the investigation, and the entire testing was completed by the UMR Explosives Group.

The mechanism of rock fracture by explosive is a fundamental in rock blasting. It is generally believed that the shock waves from the detonation initiate the fractures. Then the detonation gases penetrate into the fractures and elongate them. However, our previous researches indicated that the detonation gases do not contribute significantly to the fracture propagation. In our latest experiment, blasts have been carried out in 8 large granite blocks. The main goal was to study the fracture mechanism, namely to determine whether the shock waves or the detonation gases fracture the rock.

The effect on an explosive column of the sharp transient stress waves generated during the earlier detonation of adjacent blastholes is of paramount importance to explosives users. Some explosives will sympathetically detonate under these stresses. Others may suffer a transient desensitization, arising from a temporary increase in the density of an explosive beyond certain limits and persisting until the explosive mass relaxes back to the original density. Some explosives are so adversely affected by these stresses that the product suffers immediate and permanent loss of sensitivity. These effects can be clearly seen while blasting in tough conditions such as burn cuts or wedge cuts and in materials, such as coals, that propagate shock waves well.

When investigating citizen complaints about blast vibration and airblast, it is important to be able to establish the spatial relationships between blasts, blasting seismographs monitoring the events, and complainant structures to assess any directional impacts. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) routinely uses hand-held GPS receivers to document these relationships. The waypoint (structures and seismograph monitoring locations) and tracking (blasting and permit areas) features are used to map a site. These data are imported into the software for editing and conversion to GPS Exchange (.gpx) format.

A number of studies have evaluated excavation methods for the construction of subsurface facilities for a potential deep geologic repository for the disposal of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, NV. Many of these studies suggest that where TBM (tunnel boring machine) methods are not applicable and alternative mechanical excavation methods can not efficiently excavate harder rock drill and blast methods may be the most efficient means of excavation. However, a number of concerns regarding drill and blast applications have been raised in these evaluations, most notably the affects of blasting on the surrounding perimeter, as isolation of the waste by the natural barrier of the surrounding rock is a key element in the concept of a deep geologic repository.

"This report investigates whether it is tractable and thereupon reasonable to remove the boosterinfluences when ranking the toxic fumes of non-cap-sensitive mining explosives. The hazard potential is represented by relative fume toxicity RFT, the resultant influence computed from a formulated rule with a restricted set (tally) of fume components and multiplying constants. The RFT result is compared to the rule criterion that represents the worst case tolerable toxicity stipulated by regulations or otherwise. The typical nonstoichiometric booster composition can render notable unwanted influence on the RFT ranking results. Historically, the remedy was to shoot the booster separately and reduce the trial concentrations by the relevant subtractions. Unreal negative concentration results were noted on rare occasions, revealing the faulty nature of the reduction procedure. With thermodynamic reaction chemistry codes TDRC, on the other hand, the booster ingredients can be retained in or removed from the reactant tabulation, yielding reduction factors taken as the concentration ratios for the two circumstances. The underlying presumption regarding reduction factors is that the ratios of component concentrations with and without the booster ingredients when resolved theoretically ought to equal those rendered experimentally, when tractable. Upon rearranging the presumed relationship, the unadjusted fume concentrations divided by theoretical reduction factors yield the wanted readjusted fume concentrations, thereby removing the booster influence without generating unreal negative concentrations."

Because in Europe and in many other countries as well every new project (quarry, mine, public work) needs a risk estimation to prove its feasibility, a model to estimate flyrock risks became necessary. This paper presents the basic hypothesis which should underlay such a model to estimate statistical flyrocks range for not only some single blasts but a whole project and in particular the way to take into account rockmass or blast pattern parameters variability. It describes a first usable quantitative flyrock model based on the characteristics of the blasting plan and of the generic laws utilised in casting and selective blasting operations and on a statistical approach of rockmass. In a second step, this paper discuss an approach of risks estimation compared to the classical one used in pyrotechnics studies for explosive magazine risks assessment.

Lowering of quarry energy consumption participates to answer both environmental and financial issues. The “EE-Quarry” European project, supported by the European Commission (EE stands for Energy Efficient), develops a new and highly effective modelling and monitoring Energy Management System technique to improve Energy Efficiency and move to a low CO2 emission rate in the nonmetallic mineral industry. Within this global quarry project, blast design, as the first link in the chain, has to be optimized in order to satisfy requirements of downstream operations. The authors have been developing and implementing an operational methodology using continuous field measurements and field adaptation methods for blast design. It drives the drilling and blasting work, aiming at a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation. Based upon actual local conditions (rock-mass assessment, face geometry, borehole deviations, etc.), blast patterns are optimized through a specific hole-by-hole blast design software. It provides a better and more consistent energy distribution, to achieve a better rock fragmentation, while avoiding explosive overconsumption. The software also calculates total energy inputs and the drilling and blasting contribution to Greenhouse Effect. Coupled with methodical fieldwork and variable density explosives, it has been leading to a real reduction in energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As the project is now reaching its final stage, demonstrations were conducted in various quarries around Europe. Several simulations were carried out and compared to the site data, in order to propose enhancements for the different phases (extraction, loading, hauling, crushing and transport) while bearing in mind the environmental impact of the quarry. This blasting methodology allows to assess the carbon footprint of drilling and blasting in conjunction with the downstream operations, thus to evaluate the global carbon footprint of quarrying. In surface mining, designing patterns to reduce the probability of flyrock and optimizing fragmentation through powder factor calculations are important for safe, efficient blasts. The designed powder factor is established for the blast once parameters such as burden, spacing, stemming, and powder column height are determined. In practice, these parameters are usually constant throughout a production blast with row-to-row burden and spacing. However, challenges can arise with the introduction of an open face. Many variables could necessitate the adjustment of the face row to optimize blast results. Variables include drill accessibility, challenges with toes, overhangs, and geology. The approach is often, but not exclusively, determining how to keep a consistent powder factor from the open face through the body of the blast. However, the solutions used vary case-by-case and rarely are two blasts the same. Technology has improved the ability to deal with challenging face conditions. 3D modeling with the aid of drones allows the application of angled holes to be more effective and simpler. This is just one instance where technology has improved blast results. This paper will present solutions to challenging face conditions. Thoroughly analyzing instances where challenging open-face variables were met with an effective blast solution could help provide insight as to what yields consistent blast results.

It is known that the introduction of electronic timing in the sequencing of blasting has changed the vision and way in which mining is developed. It is possible to deal with more complex and sophisticated drilling designs, without compromising productivity or safety. It has been shown in various studies, that a correct timing of the blasting provides an improvement in the improvement of the processes downstream, due to a decrease in the resistance of the resulting fragments coming from the interaction of the waves generated in the detonation of explosive loads. On the other hand, it has also been shown that variations in the composition of a same type of explosive, has a significant influence over the resistance of the blasted material, also the energy associated to break it, affecting directly its degree of fragmentation. This paper is aimed to display the new advancements of blasting engineering done in different mining sites throughout the country, associated to electronic sequencing, energy of the explosive and its impact on the fragmented rock. This document explains how to define and implement selective sequencing in the blasting in order to promote the propagation of cracks, therefore impacting positively the productivity through the use of the LaGrange diagram. The LaGrange diagram is a very convenient and illustrative method to present the dynamic behavior associated with wave and crack propagation (Rossmanith. H, 2002). This study focused on the methodology of the formation and measurement of seismic pulses, through the rock massif. For this purpose, seismic pulses were acquired in the field and then, the different dynamic phases of the wave were molded mathematically, with the purpose of favoring the coupling between them.

According to the Directive 93/15/EEC, given on 5th of April 1993, all the commercial explosives placed on the market and transfered in European Union and EFTA countries have to be certified and contain the CE-marking. Before the products can be awarded by the CE-marking they have to fulfil the Essential Safety Requirements (ESR) of Appendix 1 of the Directive. From the beginning of last year the commercial explosives could not have been be sold in Europian Union countries without the CE-marking. The legitimacy of the Directive 93/15/EEC encompasses High Explosives, Detonating Cords, Safety Fuses, Gun Propellants and Detonators. At the moment in Europe, there are seven Notified Bodies (NB) working in the field of commercial explosives. They are in Spain (LOM), Germany (BAM), France (INERES), England (HSL), Netherlands (TNO-PML), Sweden (SP) and in Finland (PvTT). The Swedish SP has qualifications only for the detonators and the Finnish PvTT for High explosives, Detonating cords, Safety Fuses and Gun Propellants, but not for the detonators. The role of the NB is to work as a third independent body between the client and the manufacturer testing, studying and certifying explosives by the commission of the manufacturer. The Notified Bodies are operating independently competing the clients, the explosives manufactures.
