"If the final goal of metallurgy is the extraction of metals from a given ore, everyone knows that this achievement relies on many separation steps involving much more than a biphasic material made of metal and gangue. Nevertheless, still today, most of the design and follow-up of industrial processes only consider metal grades; in best case metal grades per size class. Working with such heterogeneous material, made of several minerals, with different grain size and texture, implies to consider finer ore models to be able to predict the behavior of material and the subsequent operation performances. Analytical tools are now available to provide such relevant and accurate data which are applied in geometallurgy. To achieve a true geometallurgical approach for process design, but also for optimization, accurate process simulation absolutely needs to combine these fine ore models with the corresponding unit operation models. Based on generic, but configurable, criteria of description and a hierarchical approach, the material modelling tool embedded in the USIM PAC process simulator provides the necessary flexibility to describe any type of ore with almost no limit in the level of details and associated physical properties that can be met in the mining industry. The simulation engine and the mathematical models of unit operations are designed to manage such a diversity of material modelling. The paper present various ore models and some of their applications in flowsheet simulation. It proves the interest of this detailed and advanced approach to accurately predict plant performances. INTRODUCTION Process simulation used for process design and optimization requires accurate unit operation modeling. During the last decades, main efforts of the different teams developing software simulators have been dedicated to those models for comminution and physical separations such as flotation or gravity concentration (Kojovic et al., 2012, Soni and Yoon, 2014). In most case, the ore is modelled with a size distribution and metal or mineral grades. A water phase is considered for wet processes. The association of unit operations and such material models generally allows, after some parameters adjustment, to achieve good agreement between experimental and simulated data. The use of the obtained simulator to test alternative configuration of circuits or settings of equipment devices can be accurate enough as far as the ore processed is close to the ore used for simulator adjustment. However, when the ore gets very different grades, coming from different mineral proportions or grain sizes, the simulation results can be of poor accuracy. Because any physical separations such as gravity, magnetic or flotation, do not sort metal and gangue but particles, made of minerals, containing metals, the only way to be accurate enough for allowing extrapolations, is to model particles. The phase model tools embedded in the USIM PAC process simulator gives this possibility. However, as such level of details are not always available for analyses, the tool has been designed with a high level of flexibility, to adapt the model to the available data. In this paper, the principles of this conceptual modelling tool are presented, and some application cases illustrate the material model flexibility and its interest."

Aluminum is produced by the Hall-Héroult process, which involves passing a current through a molten mixture of alumina dissolved in cryolite (Na3AlF6) to reduce the alumina to aluminum. This process occurs in an electrolytic cell comprising a steel shell lined with a carbon cathode and refractory bricks. After a certain period of operation, the carbon cathode deteriorates and is removed from the cell along with the refractory bricks. These removed materials are referred to as spent pot lining or ?SPL?. Typically, 30 Kg of SPL waste is generated for every ton of Aluminum produced. Globally aluminum smelters produce more than 500,000 tons of SPL each year. Even though SPL has a high fuel value (8000 to 9000 BTU/lb) and contains valuable metals, it is classified as a hazardous material due to its cyanide content and leachable fluorides. Various disposal/recycle techniques have been developed over the years for SPL but none of them is satisfactory. Thus, large quantities of SPL are still being dumped in landfills. In some countries, even the land filling of SPL is not permitted. The safe disposal of SPL thus remains a challenging problem to the aluminum industry and the search continues to find methods of converting SPL into a non-hazardous waste and/or recovering the valuable materials contained in the SPL. We have developed a process to produce hydraulic setting cements (eco-cement) containing a novel fluoride rich cementitious phase, from SPL by an energy efficient, low temperature clinkering route. A raw mix blend of SPL, lime/limestone, calcium sulfate and tailings sands based on a set of design criteria developed by us, is clinkered in a two stage process; 2 hours soak at 800 °C followed by clinkering at 1000 °C for another 2 hours, to produce a soft clinker. The SPL eco-cement is made by grinding the clinker to a fineness of 5000 cm2/g Blaine with 1% by weight borax as a set retarder. A good quality cement having as high as 20 % by weight of SPL in the raw mix (28 % by weight in the cement clinker) is thus produced. The physical properties of the SPL cements are found to be comparable to the Indian standard (IS) specifications for Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC). We have produced the cement in a few Kg batches and tested the reproducibility of results from batch to batch for further scale up. For a correct evaluation of the performance of any process, it is important to reconcile the data gathered in the plant from the material balance point of view for all the streams flowing in and flowing out of the process unit. There are two main approaches to reconciliation of data, which involve minimization of the sum of the squares of: (i) the closure residuals and (ii) the component adjustments; both weighed with the estimated variances of the components. Though, these approaches have served us well, it has not been possible to ascertain if the reconciled values for various components and the split factors obtained using these approaches are truly the best estimates. In this paper, this aspect has been investigated by analyzing pseudo-experimental data of known error structure on size classification of particles in a hydrocyclone. Three types of basic error structures were considered for the measured component values: absolute error, relative error and chi-square error. The error structure was modified by adding a random component of error using normally distributed random numbers corresponding to zero mean and different levels of variance. By carrying out a large number of simulation experiments, it has been shown that in the presence of random errors, irrespective of the basic error structure of data, which is usually unknown, the chi-square error minimization criterion can be used to obtain most reliable results. "The platinum-group metals (PGMs), are currently receiving worldwide attention as they have major industrial uses. PGMs, i.e. ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), osmium (Os), iridium (Ir), and platinum (Pt), are widely used as catalysts in petroleum and chemical processes. In addition, they find wide applications in automotive exhaust-gas control converters and are of immense importance to the electronic industry. Broadly speaking, PGMs are extracted in minute quantities from a limited number of ores, found mainly in South Africa and Russia. As the PGMs are both costly and almost indestructible, they are usually recycled from various forms of scrap. In other words, the recycling of the PGMs is an essential factor in the overall management of the PGM economy. In addition, the ever-increasing user areas have created renewed interest in the search for new sources or deposits of PGM, which in turn requires an in-depth knowledge of its characteristics. In this work, the emphasis is placed on the need to analyze the composition and microstructure of blast-furnace slag for recovering PGM metals. In other words, chemical composition, surface analysis and microstructure analysis of the DC arc furnace slag have been carries out. The aim is to provide a detailed analysis of this material for anyone with an interest in gaining further knowledge of its specific content for recovering PGMs."

"In Kazakhstan, there is a unique sulphide copper deposit, in the ores containing the natural isotope of osmium-187 (more than 90 %). In the pyrometallurgical processing of concentrates for the target metal, osmium is mainly sublimated, with wet cleaning of metallurgical gases (dust and gas mixture) 40 % of it together with rhenium passes into washing solutions (wash acid). On the basis of this acid, the production of ammonium perrhenate was organized at the enterprise of the RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"" and for the first time in the world practice - the isotope of osmium-187. However, the degree of its recovery from solutions does not exceed 8 % of the amount supplied with the charge or 25 % of the amount that was received for extraction. But the bulk of it (~ 75 %) remains in the raffinate, discharged to sewage treatment plants (wastewater). The studies presented in this work are aimed at solving the problem of osmium isotope-187 extracting from wastewater, which are a potential source of increasing metal production in Kazakhstan. The aim of this work is the development and scientific justification of osmium deposition regimes from wastewater using such reagents as thiosulfate and sodium sulphide. The influence of various physicochemical factors on the precipitation of the osmium was studied and optimal conditions for its maximum transition to sediment were chosen. An original method for obtaining osmium concentrate in the presence of sodium thiosulfate with the addition of potassium iodide from a new type of wastewater - man-made ammonia solutions has been developed. These solutions were combined mother liquors of solid-phase stripping operations and dissolution of pulp of crude ammonium perrhenate. On the basis of the obtained results, a settling technology for extraction of the osmium from man-made ammonia rhenium-containing solutions was introduced at RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"". It should be noted that the degree of extraction of osmium, depending on its concentration in solutions entering on the settlement, and taking into account the addition of sulfuric acid, will vary from 60 to 90 %. Porous carbon adsorbents derived from inorganic materials templates such as zeolite and mesoporous silicate attracted considerable attention in the last decade and got great progress in re-cent years. However, so far almost all of templates used in the process were artificial porous materials; the porous carbons prepared by this method are very costly, which restricts the synthesis and application of templated porous carbons. In order to reduce the cost of templated porous carbons, natural inorganic porous minerals have been taken into consideration, which maybe possible and promising templates to prepare carbon adsorbents. In this work, we describe template process using tubular halloysite, rich mesoporous zeolite and low bulk density diatomite, as exemplars of the categories of inorganic porous templates which we have studied and discussed the effects of different templating structure on the resultant carbons. Two main carbon precursors, sucrose and furfuryl alcohol, were used respectively. The morphology of minerals and corresponding templated carbons were characterized using electron microscopy. The pore structures of minerals and templated carbons were characterised with nitrogen adsorption. The results showed that the morphology and pore structure of porous carbons are in good pertinence to those of corresponding templates. The morphology and pore structure of templated carbons could reflect those of corresponding templates at nanometer level. The templated carbons with high specific surface areas and rich mesopores can be prepared by using these three kinds of natural porous minerals as templates. The higher the surface area and pore volume of the minerals, the higher those of the corresponding carbons. The template carbons from halloysite possessed higher pore volume and mesoporosities. Based on the large mounts of experiment results, a model for the mechanism of resultant nanopores formation has been proposed. The nanopores of templated carbons are mainly composed of three kinds of pores: templated pores formed by removing mineral, hereditary pores formed by inheriting the pores of templates and nanopores formed during carbonization. These three kinds of pores have a close relationship with corresponding template.

With the feature of finely-dissemination particle and complex mineral composition, oolitic hematite is considered to be the ore dressing difficult problem in the world. Series research on refractory oolitic hematite in Zhangjiakou Area are introduced as following: ore properties?technology mineralogy and mineral processing technology. The survey shows: with the fine grinding of the hematite to a fineness of -0.076mm 95%, obtaining iron concentrates grading 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 46.80% by high intensity magnetic separation- reverse flotation flowsheet; under the three stages intensity magnetic separation,four stages grinding and four stages gravity separation, getting the iron concentrates grading 61.09% Fe at the recovery of 45% using high intensity magnetic separation- gravity separation flowsheet; with roasting temperature of 800°C, time for 75~90min and ore-coal ratio of 11, gaining the iron concentrates assaying 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 87% by roasting- magnetic separation flowsheet. At present, this research is still doing for the target of raising the concentration recovery on the base of high grade concentrate. This paper presents BF flotation machines in brief which are manufactured by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (BGRIMM). Dimensional analysis and similarity criteria have been used to scale up BF flotation machines. These scale-up criteria can be used to determine mechanical structure and hydrodynamic parameters including mixing, solids suspension, air transfer and power and so on. Similarity criteria are used to design 40m3 flotation machine being based on data from 1.2 m3 to 20 m3 flotation machines. Hydrodynamic tests of 40 m3 flotation machine in water are discussed.

Low gold and silver leaching kinetics has been commonly observed in traditional gold-silver cyanidation process, especially in those heap-leaching operations. The reactivity and availability of oxidant was believed to be the critical limitation for gold and silver dissolution. The occurrence of silver sulfide such as acanthite (Ag2S) in the ore may also result in low overall silver extraction. Leaching of gold and silver sulfide in the ferricyanide-cyanide solution has been investigated through rotating disc tests and the assistant effect of ferricyanide on increasing the dissolution rate of gold and silver was noticed. The potential use of ferricyanide as an auxiliary oxidant in gold/silver cyanidation process was proposed based on the results of leaching of gold-silver ores.

Because of its simplicity, economy and biocompatibility, research regarding the use of microorganism for decontaminating heavy metals produced by many industries is an area of growing interest. Also, there is a stringent need for the control of toxic metals produced during various production processes and released into the aqueous environment in order to avoid damage relevant to soil or groundwater contamination. Among the available treatment technologies, sorptive flotation has been considered as a promising alternative for the wastewater treatment. In the present study Streptomyces lunalinharesii strain was applied as bioreagent for the removal of copper, cadmium and zinc. The removal of those metal ions depends mainly on the respective pH value, influencing the aquatic speciation during the process, as well as the zeta potential of the system and biomass concentration. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms have been depicted. Dispersed air flotation was applied as the subsequent separation method for harvesting the suspended metal laden microorganisms, following the biosorption of copper, zinc and cadmium. The investigated parameters (in batch mode, laboratory scale) were in this case the saturator pressure, the coagulant concentration and the recycled flow. Applying the optimum defined conditions, over 60% removal of metal ions have been achieved in one stage and simultaneously, quantitative separation of the used (metal-loaded) biomass has been obtained.

"Carbonate minerals are very important mineral source of extracting metal, radioactive element and rare earth elements. Furthermore,some carbonate minerals, such as calcite and dolomite, are common and important components of sediments and sedimentary rocks. Many flotation processes involve the separation of valuable minerals with carbonate minerals. So it is of great significance to the flotation theory and industrial practice to investigate the flotation behaviors of carbonate minerals. As regulators, metal ions play a major role in minerals flotation. The study of influence law of metal ions on minerals flotation is helpful to eliminate or utilize the effect of metal ions. In this study, calcite and smithsonite laboratory scale flotation, surface analysis and zeta potential determination in the presence of Fe(II) ion were performed to investigate the effect of Fe(II) on carbonate flotation. The results show that Fe(?) depresses the flotation of calcite and smithsonite. The depression effect of Fe species on calcite and calamine flotation can be improved with the increase of Fe(?) concentration. The zeta potential measurements and surface analysis show the existence of iron hydroxide products on mineral surface, which may be link to carbonate site instead of exchanging with calcium on the mineral surface. Fe species on the mineral surface inhibit the interaction between the reagents and calcite/smithsonite through the formation of surface precipitation coating on the calcite/smithsonite surface when the Fe(?) concentration is higher."

"Traditionally minerals processing equipment, such as jigs, are studied by characterising the feed and products from these processes. With this approach important details on the mechanisms of a process can be overlooked since assumptions have to be made on the internal operations of the equipment. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) is a non-invasive technique that can be used to track a particle’s movement inside a closed vessel. PEPT makes it possible to observe the inner workings of a process, providing new information that was unattainable only a few years ago. Jigging has long been considered as one of the most difficult mineral processing techniques to model, due to the complexity of the mechanisms contributing to the separation of minerals during the jigging process. In this investigation PEPT was used to study the particle flow inside a laboratory batch jig. The aim was to determine if the particle trajectories could provide new insight into the jigging and its mechanisms. Three dimensional particle trajectories were observed with spatial and temporal resolution high enough to see details of the individual pulses during jigging. It was found that the pulse height is very dependent on the position in the jig bed. The vertical component from the trajectories showed the rate at which particles move through the jig bed (stratification rate) and it was seen that the density of a particle affects the stratification rate more that the particle’s size and that the shape in the range that was tested had little to no influence. Other phenomena such as a circular flow pattern was observed inside the jig and it was found that smaller lower density particles are affected by this circular flow pattern which tend to disperse these particles throughout the jig bed. Visualising the flow inside a jig by means of PEPT has shown to be instrumental in the deeper understanding of the process."

This work is dedicated to the chemical treatment of a typical EAF dust by chlorine content agents. The residue contains 48% Fe2O3 and 28% ZnO mainly in the franklinite structural form. The others less compounds are: 4.00% CaO, 2.60% MnO, 2.20% MgO, 1.08% PbO, 0.36% Cr2O3, 0.21% B2O3, 0.03% CdO and 0.01% NiO. The experiments purpose is selectively to remove zinc from the residue leaving the iron behind. Thermodynamics studies have indicated some roasting possibilities. The experimental results have shown that both HCl leaching and carbochlorination will remove iron and zinc without any selectivity. However, either the chlorine or the calcium chloride roasting seems to form, preferentially, the zinc chloride. So, it will be presented how the EAF Dust can be treated by the using of chlorine roastings process such as carbochlorination in order to separate the zinc and iron present in the frankilinite, main EAF dust content.

The analysis of particle capture by an air bubble by two separate phenomena of collision and attachment has been difficult due to the uncertainty in determining when and where the two phenomena begin and terminate at the bubble surface, respectively. Therefore, a unified analysis was developed by solving the motion equation for the particle capture as one process. No distinction be-tween collision and attachment was made. Both the liquid film described by the micro-hydrodynamic resistance functions and the surface forces were included in the new model. The model predictions with the DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) surface forces did not agree with the experimental trajectories of latex and silica spheres. The model predictions with the inclusion of the non-DLVO attractive surface force agreed with the experimental data. The non-DLVO force reduced the repulsion between the non-attaching particle and the bubble, and significantly increased the attraction between the attaching particle and the bubble. The unified analysis is capable of predicting particle capture without the use of the induction time. The unified analysis also shows significant influence of the short-range hydrodynamic interactions on the collision which has been previously ignored.

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980.s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão - GO), Bunge (Cajati - SP), Fosfértil (Tapira - MG) and Copebrás (Catalão - GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

Vanadium-beard bone coal is one of important vanadium resources in China.To extract vanadium tailings from Stone coal is produced after extracted vanadium from stone coal through the roasting, leaching and other processes. About 120-150 tons of tailings will be produced in extracting 1 ton of vanadium pentoxide. A lot of tailings that are willfully piled up have caused serious environmental pollution and wasting of resources; it is therefore necessary to realize its resource utilization. This study increases the activity of vanadium tailings by means of alkali fusion, and then uses different alkali activators to react with vanadium tailings so that geopolymer with high value added is produced. Sample of geopolymer is acquired from a mixture containing vanadium tailings, alkali activators, water and a little sodium aluminate through compression-molding process under 20MPa pressure. After cured in room temperature for three days, the maximum compressive strength of the sample can reach 36.2MPa. XRD analysis indicates quartz, the major crystal phase in vanadium tailings is decomposed,and the activity of vanadium tailings is heightened. FTIR and SEM analyses show: structural change having an important impact on the mechanical strength of geopolymer occurred during the process of vanadium tailings generating geopolymer.

"An important elementary step of the flotation process is the forming, drainage and rupture of a thin intervening liquid film between bubble and mineral particle.After the encounter of the bubble with the solid surface a wetting film is formed. The initial thinning of this film is driven by the capillary pressure inside the bubble. When the film has reached a certain thickness rupture can take place.There are two possible mechanisms describing this process:-, Growing fluctuation waves (spinodal dewetting) on fluid interfaces under the influence of any kind of attractive forces (electrostatic, van der Waals). -, Nucleation inside the film.Metastable wetting films on negatively charged, hydrophobic glass surfaces (gaseous phase methylated), or on hydrophilic, positively charged glass surfaces (with Al3+ ions), have been analysed by means of the kinetics of film thinning according to the Reynolds law. These experiments demonstrate that both mechanisms can be responsible for the rupture of a thin wetting film. In the case of hydrophobic surfaces the nucleation mechanism is preferred; in the case of opposite charged silica surface the capillary waves mechanism due to an attractive electrostatic double layer force between silica and air bubble takes place.Hereby the existence of a long range hydrophobic force. on a hydrophobic surface can be excluded. The apparent interaction can be explained by the presence of gas nuclei formed on heterogeneous surface sites. The results provide deeper insight into the mechanisms of wetting film stability, adhesion process in flotation and droplet coalescence."

In cyanide leaching procedure, achieving an acceptable efficiency for silver and gold is very time-consuming, thus, enough studies have not been performed for optimization and modeling of this process. The kinetics of cyanide leaching includes two steps: first step comprises a sharp slope while the other has a slight increasing trend. In the present study, in order to reduce the time and cost, the cyanide leaching process of a sulfide silver/gold ore was optimized in the first period. The applied parameters and their ranges are: temperature 20-40 (°C); time 1-8 (hrs); cyanide concentration 1-2 (mole cyanide / mole Cu); the percentage of solid to liquid 1-2 (%) and pH 10-12. For design of experiments fractional factorial 2(5-1) was used. Also four center points were applied to increase the accuracy of the model. In addition, by analysis of variance (ANOVA) the most effective parameters were identified and the optimized condition was determined. A regression model was proposed to describe the effects of independent variables and their interacting role on silver recovery. Results showed that the model was linear for silver and nonlinear for gold. In the gold recovery process, the two important parameters are time and pH with the former being more effective. Due to the existence of cyanide ions in the medium, temperature and cyanide concentration have less influence in the gold recovery process. Solid to liquid ratio, in addition, comprises a slight negative impact on the procedure. This emphasizes the different kinetics of silver/ gold cyanide leaching. Finally, using the optimum condition the amount of silver and gold obtained were 61% and 67% in 8 hours, respectively. While in general conditions, the results were 37% and 54% in 24 hours, respectively. Keywords: cyanide leaching, refractory gold/silver ore, modeling, optimization

By means of natural sedimentation, two different bentonite samples from Shandong province were purified, this paper studies the Hydro-properties of the two purified montmorillonite samples. Firstly, the layer charge of two purified montmorillonite samples were calculated by crystal structure formula reckon method and general hydro-properties were also measured. The research results showed that the layer charge of montmorillonite correlated well with its hydro-properties: mont-morillonite with lower layer charge had better hydro-properties, such as Mont-1, which had higher swelling volume and gelling value with lower CEC; while, montmorillonite with higher layer charge had worse hydro-properties, such as Mont-2, which had lower swell volume and gelling value with higher CEC; it proves that the hydro-properties of montmorillonite depends on its layer charge characteristics, layer charge characteristic is the inherent factors deciding the hydro-properties of montmorillonite, montmorillonite with lower layer charge has better hydro-properties than the one with higher layer charge. In this paper, the relation between the medium condition and colloid performance of Mont-1 are also studied. The results show that the hydro-properties of Mont-1 could be changed by changing slurry concentration (w/w) and shear rate or adding certain amounts of inorganic cation electrolytes, dispersants and surfactants. The viscosity of montmorillonite slurry could be enhanced by increasing slurry concentration,adding univalentcation electrolytes (less than 4% w/w) or proper amounts of dispersants and surfactants (less than critical micelle concentration); The slurry viscosity could be reduced by decreasing slurry concentration, increasing shear rate, adding proper bivalent (more than 4% w/w) cation electrolytes or proper quantities of dispersants and surfactants (more than critical micelle concentration).
