"A commitment to a core testing, plant modeling and reconciling technique has shown substantial economic benefits to IOC in terms of accurate production forecasting, smoother operation of the mill, improved expectations of throughput and co-operation across production departments from geology, planning, mining, and processing, to shipping of concentrate to market.This paper describes a successful seven year program of forecasting throughput of the autogenous milling circuit at the Carol Lake concentrator of IOC. Work started with audits of the grinding circuit in 2001 and benchmarking of the data collected from samples of mill feed and plant operation to the CEET mill design and throughput forecasting model.Initially 390 drill core samples were tested for SAG Power Index (SPI) to measure the energy required in milling, and the data distributed using a geostatistical technique across the two operating pits, so that hardness was estimated in each of the 40,000 blocks (or 1500 million tons) of potential ore. In 2004 a forecast of energy requirement, i.e. forecast of throughput for a given power availability at the mill, was produced for each ore block using the CEET model and used for mine planning to smooth plant throughput. The forecast for blocks mined on a monthly basis was reconciled with plant results over the next 2 years and minor changes made to the CEET model. The forecasting exercise was repeated in 2006 and in 2008 with the latest model based on the testing of almost 1300 samples of drill core at closer spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe contracting of sales to clients and the timely supply of products to meet those contracts is a cornerstone of good business practice. Ensuring the correct scheduling of production is a major concern of mining companies where the supply and qualities of the raw material is uncertain and production facilities are not flexible. This is particularly challenging when the product is of high volume and produced far from the customer, such as iron ore.Apart from the metal content of the ore being mined, the greatest impact on production scheduling is the throughput of the comminution section of the extraction plant; most notably when size reduction is achieved by autogenous grinding. The response of the mills to variability in the hardness of the ore can change throughput by as much as 50% from day to day at some plants."

"By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The advanced operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore highest availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives (Ravani von Ow and Bomvisinho, 2010; Ravani von Ow and Gerhard, 2010). However this paper will not only show and explain the operational benefit of these functions, but will focus on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system. Several measurements of different operating conditions (starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc.) made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. Also the accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONLooking at the demands of grinding mills, we can split them into operational, maintenance and protective demands. For smooth and safe operation, it is important that critical situations are avoided as much as possible. Maintenance functionality must be quick and easy to execute, while protection of the system is important during all operating conditions. ABB has considered all these demands during development of their dedicated mill functions. By adding an additional controller (mill controller), not only a lot of application related functionality and protection is included, but also the interface between the mill drive system and the customer’s distributed control system (DCS) is simplified."

"Red Dog is one of the largest zinc mines in the world both in terms of reserves and annual production. In 2013, Red Dog produced 551,300 mt of contained zinc and 96,700 mt of contained lead. The mine, which is located in Northwest Alaska, is a partnership between Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine and NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the local land owner. The Aqqaluk deposit, which is the current source of ore, has an average grade of 15.8% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 73 g/t Ag with the main minerals being sphalerite, galena, pyrite, barite and quartz. Surveys of the zinc flotation circuit at Red Dog identified that a substantial amount of fully liberated, sub 20 micron sphalerite particles were being lost to final tailings. As a means of improving fine sphalerite recovery, a four month plant trial of magnetic conditioning was conducted in the zinc retreat circuit. Magnetic conditioning technology has already been commissioned in several concentrators around the world to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals, increasing their probability of bubble collision and recovery in a flotation cell. The results of the four month plant trial at Red Dog showed that at a high level of confidence, a 1% increase in zinc recovery or zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade combined was achieved with magnetic conditioning. The resulting economic benefit, which is also at a high level of confidence, is significant to Red Dog and therefore, magnetic conditioning has been permanently incorporated into the Red Dog zinc flotation circuit.IntroductionRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The remote location makes the mine accessible only by air or seasonally by ocean-going barges. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. "The Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) program has been involved in numerous rail wear tests since its inception in 1976. A number of specialized tools have been developed to aid in assessing specific performance parameters including gauge face wear, head height loss, metal flow, head area loss, hardness, and welded rail end batter. The layout of a test site, including position in curve, number of measurements per rail, and train operation must be properly controlled/monitored to provide valid wear comparisons.This paper will provide an overview of the above-mentioned tools and techniques. In addition, a summary of recent test results from FAST, including information on head hardened rail investigations, will be provided. A set of guidelines for establishing a revenue service field test site will also be provided to aid users in performing evaluations of their own.IntroductionBackground of Rail Wear Testing at FASTThe Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) located at the Transportation Test Center, (TIC), Pueblo, Colorado has been involved with testing of rail since program initiation in 1976. A huge data base of rail wear information has been gathered from FAST operations under a variety of rail metallurgies, lubrication conditions, and measurement techniques. Attempts at obtaining meaningful rail wear information from early (1976-1978) FAST rail wear data was hampered by two main factors: (I) measurement techniques were insufficiently accurate for the amounts of wear being experienced, and (2) the lubrication was not sufficiently controlled to obtain uniform conditions for a sufficient measurement time period.Subsequent test periods were operated with improved measurement techniques and controls that ensured statistically valid data. The policies and conditions that permit accurate rail wear assessment will be reviewed and outlined in this paper, along with some specific TIC and field examples that will allow the user to improve the accuracy of a field rail test on their own operating property."

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity - up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonne of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle-particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter-current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in North America and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

"The Antamina orebody is a geologically complex, polymetallic skarn located in the Peruvian Andes. A range of copper and copperzinc ores are campaigned separately through the concentrator producing copper and zinc concentrates as well as lead and molybdenum by-products.Ore type classification at Antamina is based on chemical assays; geological or lithological variations are not considered. Consequently, each ore type demonstrates a wide range of concentrator performance.Antamina is currently implementing a system to track ore movements from the shovel face to the concentrator. Relatively sophisticated models of run-of-mine and coarse ore stockpiles ahead of the mill will be used to account for the variable delay between mining and milling.One of the numerous benefits of ore tracking is the ability to directly associate the measured concentrator performance with a physical location in the orebody. Using existing mine planning software, three-dimensional models can be created of such performance measures as metal recovery, concentrate quality, operating cost, and reagent consumption.Such a database of information allows the true value of different ore sources to be determined. The value of an ore source is conventionally measured as metal content (individual or combined ‘equivalent’) with a cut-off grade applied to indicate some base level operating cost. However, the true value of an ore source should include dynamic factors like haulage cost, reagent use, smelter penalties, and even prevailing metal prices. If an ore source is considered from all perspectives rather than simply its potential to deliver value, the concept of ore becomes more flexible. Any ore source that reveals itself to be unprofitable can be eliminated from the mine plan or possibly blended with others to improve its value. The ability to predict mill performance, and thereby profitability, is a powerful tool.In an operation such as Antamina, where managing ore sources, campaigns, and the delivery of a variety of concentrates in a narrow timeline to customers is a daily challenge, prediction is the key to success and improved efficiency."

"The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

"The Thompson Mill processes ores from the Thompson and Birchtree Mines. While the Thompson ore has very little magnesium containing gangue, the Birchtree orebody consists of veins of massive sulphide in a rock matrix that contains a high proportion of magnesium silicate minerals. A significant fraction of the magnesium is floatable, which lead to MgO levels varying from 3-11 wt% in the Birchtree concentrate. The magnesium in the concentrate causes a higher operating temperature in the smelter, reducing furnace life.Birchtree ore represented 20-30% of the mill ore receipts prior to October 2003. Since then the fraction of Birchtree ore has increased to 50%. A reduction of the MgO in concentrate to less than 3% in the total mill concentrate was required to allow safe and economic smelter operation.In October of 2002 a miniplant was set up to simulate the Birchtree plant circuit. Several flow sheet modifications were tested that led to a proposal for a circuit having increased cleaning capacity for the scavenger concentrate and a recleaner on this concentrate. Addition of CMC in rougher cleaner feed was also found to be required. The solution was confirmed through pilot plant testing in the mill in December of 2002. A full-scale installation was designed, engineered, and installed between February and September of 2003 with commissioning in September and October of 2003. Target metallurgy was achieved one week after start-up on slurry to coincide with the Birchtree Mine tonnage increase. This paper highlights the development, design and commissioning stages of the project.The new MgO rejection circuit has successfully allowed the processing of Birchtree ores producing concentrate consistently below 3% MgO. In addition, the new circuit increased overall nickel recovery in the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson Nickel Belt located approximately 700km north of Winnipeg was discovered in the early 1950’s. Inco first produced nickel from the area in 1960. Over the years the mill has processed several ores from different ore bodies in the area. Currently the Thompson Mill processes two significantly different ores from two mines, Thompson and Birchtree. The Thompson ore is a massive sulphide orebody hosted in schist, containing feldspars, quartz and biotite. Thompson Ore is characterized by high nickel recoveries and clean, low MgO containing concentrates (<2.5% MgO). The Birchtree ore is ultramafic and contains a high percentage of Mg-silicates such as serpentine, chlorite, biotite, amphiboles and talc. Some of these Mg-silicates report to the nickel concentrate and prior to commissioning of the MgO rejection circuit the Birchtree nickel concentrate typically contained 5-8% MgO"

"The recovery of gold by leaching is influenced by the size of the gold carrier particles and the chemical environment. Using the relationships between the leaching rate, infinite recovery and particle size for a given set of chemical conditions, it is possible to simulate gold recovery for various feed size distributions. However the use of these particle size relationships is only valid if the leaching of gold from a given size class is independent of the production history of this size class. For instance, to use these relationships it is necessary to verify that gold recovery from the leaching of the 200-270 mesh size class remains the same if the size fraction is taken from a coarse or finely ground ore sample. Several laboratory tests were carried out to answer that question. Results of the tests show that within the large error margin associated to gold content measurements, the history of the production of a size class does not affect the gold leaching from that size class. Emphasis of the discussion is put on the difficulty associated with the processing of data containing significant measurement errors as it is the case for gold assays of leaching tests.INTRODUCTIONMore than 75% of the gold produced in the world is extracted by cyanide leaching of gold ores. The ore is ground to expose the gold carriers and the ground material is reacted in an oxygenated cyanide solution that dissolves gold, leaving solids gangue minerals that are disposed to tailings ponds or returned in underground mines as paste fill. The gold contained in the solution is recovered by either the carbon in pulp process or by cementation onto zinc powder, before being melted and casted into a brick (Marsden and House, 2006)."

"Abstract - The NICO and Sue-Dianne deposits are being explored and delineated by Fortune Minerals Limited in the Mazenod Lake District of the Northwest Territories, using an Olympic Dam model. The deposits were discovered in the south part of the Great Bear magmatic zone (GBMZ) within the Proterozoic, Bear Structural Province of the Canadian Shield. They are the only known significant Canadian examples of Proterozoic iron oxide-hosted polymetallic deposits. Worldwide, this class includes such deposits as Olympic Dam and Ernest Henry in Australia, Kiruna-Aitik in Sweden, and Salobo in Brazil. Their considerable size, up to 2 billion tonnes, and polymetallic ore assemblages make them highly attractive targets for exploration. Common characteristics of this class include their Early to Middle Proterozoic cratonic settings with extensional rifting evolving from collisional tectonics. Deposits typically occur along major structural lineaments within the aureoles of a distinctive suite of anorogenic potassium-rich "A-type" granite intrusions. Although hosted by diverse lithologies, deposits of this class are characterized by a number of other diagnostic regional- and deposit-scale features, which may be recognized in reconnaissance- and propertyscale geological and geophysical surveys.The southern GBMZ in Canada has several characteristics (age, tectonic setting, geology and geophysical attributes) similar to those of the Olympic Dam deposit and its other significant global analogues. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys carried out in the GBMZ identified coincident potassium, uranium, magnetic, resistivity, chargeability, and gravity anomalies centered over the NICO deposit. The nearby Sue-Dianne deposit is characterized by coincident uranium, potassium, magnetic, resistivity and chargeability anomalies. Both deposits occur within a regional, northweststriking, arcuate trend of volcanic and sedimentary rocks characterized by significant positive Bouguer-gravity and magnetic responses and are believed to represent a major basement discontinuity. The NICO anomalies are at the intersection of this regional trend with a major transverse fault through Lou Lake. Regional and local geophysical data indicate the presence of significant concentrations of iron oxide within a broad area of intense potassium metasomatism. Geological mapping identified cobalt, gold, bismuth, and copper mineralization in biotite-magnetite-amphibole-sulfiderich ironstone and schist. This mineralization is localized within altered wackes of the Snare Group, which are unconformably overlain by potassium feldspar- (±hematite ±magnetite) altered rhyolite of the Faber Group. The Sue-Dianne deposit is a hematite-magnetite-Fe-silicate-cemented diatreme complex enriched in copper, silver, gold, and uranium within a broad zone of potassium, iron, quartz, and epidote metasomatism. The diatreme is located at the intersection of two major faults at the north end of the basement discontinuity and is hosted in rhyodacite ignimbrite marginal to the Faber Lake rapakivi-granite pluton. At both deposits, diatreme- and maar-facies iron oxide-cemented breccia straddle the regional metasedimentary-volcanic unconformity, suggesting that mineralization formed in a near-surface environment synchronous with the onset of volcanism."

"Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

Development of Barrick Gold?s Pierina Gold Mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of non-ore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock. A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of high and low quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included. "AbstractThe rod mill introduced into the Sullivan Concentrator flow in September, 1948, replaced two sets of 74 in. by 20 in. rolls and their accompanying screens. In addition to the work formerly done by the rolls, the rod mill is producing a finer product and one which provides more suitable feed for the primary ball mills. The object of the finer discharge from the •primary mills is to make possible a feed directly from the mills to a series of flotation machines where a large portion of the galena can be withdrawn from the circuit while the galena is still coarsely granular. The interposing of classifiers between grinding and flotation means the selective grinding of the galena.The author summarizes the work of •the rod mill through the first 5,000,000 tons and shows that the wear of lifters, liners, and rods is definitely below normal for the type and size of rock being handled. The rod mill, driven through a fluid coupling, has been subject to a range of speeds from 13.5 to 19. A pinion in the speed reducer was changed to allow the extending of the normal speed range of the fluid drive of approximately 4 r.p.m.Since the critical speed inside the liners •is 23.4, the range •in per cent of criticial is 57.7 to 81.2 per cent.The capacity of the mill increases with increasing speed but the character of the product remains approximately the same except when the feed rate is too high.Consumption of steel, power, and other operating data are presented.The author introduces certain fundamental observations on the principles involved •in comminution in order to support the special design and operation of the rod mill."

"Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited is involved in the mining, milling and primary refining of various gold, gold - copper and refractory gold ores. Pamour operates five mines in the Porcupine Mining District of Ontario, and two 2,550 t/d milling facilities.Both metallurgical facilities use conventional cyanidation technology including zinc cementation for precipitation of gold and silver from solution. The precipitation process, as applied to clarified leach solutions (less than 1 ppm suspended solids) at Pamour is called the Merrill - Crowe process. Precipitates from both milling operations are treated at Pamour's Area Refinery. Schumacher precipitates, unlike Pamour No. 1, require an ''Acid Treatment Stage"" prior to refining to remove the high contained copper. This is accomplished by leaching the precipitates initiallv with sulphuric acid to remove zinc and then with sulphuric acid and manganese dioxide to dissolve copper. Refining procedures after ''Acid Treatment"" are essentially the same for both precipitates.The following considerations highlight the basic principals applied to refining cyanidation precipitates at Pamour, including:"

The contour method can be used to estimate the mineral resources of a mineralized body. It relies on geological interpretation and allows the geologist to determine the plunge of a mineralized ore shoot along the dipping plane of the mineralized body. The technique is best applied to estimate tonnage and average grade of relatively planar bodies, i.e., where the two dimensions of the mineralized body are much greater than the third dimension, such as Archean lode gold vein deposits or mantos of massive sulphide mineralization, based on exploration drilling. For these types of deposits, the contour method can provide a clear view of the “mineralization landscape” with “peaks” and “valleys” along the plane of the mineralized vein. The technique also reduces the “nugget effect” of local high values commonly present in gold deposits. With sufficient drill hole information, the contour method may be used to estimate the tonnage and average grade of individual blocks within a mineral deposit. General procedures for the contour method are described in this paper, along with examples and explanatory notes.

"A computerized cost estimating program developed with the use of the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program has produced dramatic savings in preparing estimates for operating costs, equipment fleet size and manpower requirements for underground mines.The program is used by Dynatec to support its consulting engineering projects, particularly feasibility studies. The &apos;first principles&apos; approach is used to prepare detailed estimates under direct labour and supplies categories and maintenance costs for each mining operation . User notes have been developed to guide the estimator and ensure appropriate consideration is given to the specifics of the particular mine.A typical case history is illustrated and the ease by which alternatives and sensitivity analyses can be prepared is demonstrated. IntroductionHistorical MethodsMining engineers have used one or a combination of methods to prepare operating cost estimates for new or existing mine s. Operating companies have access to historical cost data and generally use this for preparing estimates. Consulting engineers do not usually have direct access to such information and must rely on mining companies (the present or previous clients); publications (text books, equipment manufacturers manuals, CMJ reference manual, etc.); annual reports (applicable to public companies); previous studies (to be used with caution as conditions change from mine to mine); and first principles (the subject of this paper), for cost information:Definition of First PrinciplesA first principles approach to cost estimating considers individual primary work elements of an operation. Quantities of work items are developed from the mine plans, production rates, geographic and physical layouts etc. The knowledgeable estimator, assisted by experienced operations personnel, can assign appropriate resources (equipment, labour, supplies and services) to each work element and establish productivities. Completion of the cost estimate is then largely arithmetic."
