"Complex facilities which provide for the collection, management and treatment of effluents emanating from the Sullivan mine and concentrator tailings were made operational in October, 1979. Key features of the system are the use of upgraded tailings ponds for the storage of up to 800 million litres of metals-contaminated effluents, a treatment plant employing lime in a high density sludge process and a sludge-impoundment facility designed for maximum long-term environmental safety. The completed works are cap1ble of satisfying a difficult range of operating requirements imposed by highly variable weather conditions, drainage flows and soluble metals loadi11gs. Final capital expenditures for the project will approach $10 million and annual operating costs are estimated at $0.8 million.This paper discusses the Kimberley effluents treatment project and the major considerations in its development. The treatment process, major plant equipment and initial operating experience are also described."

"To remove sulphur, carbon and arsenic from the gold concentrates of Dundee Sustainable Technologies (DST), Hatch has designed a demonstration plant roaster using the fluid bed technology. The fluid bed was selected for its ability to maintain stable temperatures and uniform reaction conditions. Data points from a small pilot plant (operated by DST) were used for setting the parameters of the demo plant roaster.The DST demonstration plant is being built to further prove their patented gold extraction process at an industrial scale. Their gold extraction process is based on halogenation at atmospheric pressure and relatively low temperatures. Before the halogen leaching, most of the sulphur, carbon and arsenic should be roasted out of the feed concentrate.The Hatch fluid bed roaster design includes a moist feed introduction system, simple bed cooling for temperature control, and cyclone fines recirculation. The demonstration plant roaster is planned for construction in 2014, and the performance results will be presented in a future paper."

The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

SIGMA MINES is situated in the township of Bourlamaque, Abitibi County, Quebec. It is a gold producer, and presently treats an average of 1,200 tons of ore per day, at a grade of approximately 0.18 oz. per ton recovered. The mill started operations in March, I937, at a rate of 300 tons per day. This was increased to 800 tons in I940, and to 1,000 tons by I943. The rate was cut back during the war years, but was brought back up to capacity by I948. The mill tonnage was in-creased to the present 1,200 tons per day in I960. The underground workings are serviced through No. 2 Shaft (Figure 1), which, with 24 operating levels, extends from surface to a depth of 3,317 feet. When depth exploration was decided upon, two possibilities were considered: (a) deepen the main shaft by1,000 feet; (b) put down a winze for the same distance.

We present research on cable fault location methods for mines where coal dust and methane explosions are a frequent potential hazard. The methodology and devices for low- and medium voltage cables fault location are well known and applied in classical power distribution networks. They are based on solutions for underground mines with a high risk of explosion. The lack of a safe solution for the location of a fault has contributed to the initiation of a research project by a group of Polish companies. The consortium consists of research institutes (Institute of Innovative Technologies EMAG, Tele and Radio Research Institute, Central Mining Institute GIG-KD ?Barbara?), Silesian University of Technology and a private entrepreneur MARTECH PLUS. Fast and exact determination of fault location is one of the important factors for minimizing power outage time. The lack of technical solutions to obtain measurements in a secure way leads to the use of the methods connected with a high risk of explosion. For example, the application of high energy can lead to arc discharge where there is a fault in insulation, creating the risk of an explosion. Measurements of methane concentration along the analyzed section of the cable reduce the risk; however the shock wave generated by the electric arc may raise coal dust and make an explosive mixture, which is an object of ignition. Low energy methods, like those based on reflection waves, have low sensitivity for high- and medium-resistance faults. This technique has difficulties in joints, which create false echoes. The fundamental problem is to determine the topology of the network using a reflectogram and find anomalies of a different nature ? not only open and short circuit. Included in the scope of the project is an analysis of Polish legal regulations related to fault location and operational work for low- and medium-voltage networks. Two of the methods used on the surface were selected as feasible to implement under explosion hazard conditions. In the process of development of the fault location methodology, installation features characteristic of underground mines were used, namely access to the whole length of a cable. This is the attribute that provides an opportunity to do measurements that are usually not possible for typical surface power nets. To carry out laboratory tests, a dedicated measuring stand with various types of cables was built. The authors describe the principle of operation of the fault locator and the results of the laboratory tests carried out on the cables with built-in damage (prepared for tests). Results of the work will be the basis for the next stage of the project associated with operational analyses of the prototype.

"Efficiency and penetration rate during percussive rock drilling significantly affect the speed of tunneling and excavation. Many researchers and engineers have continuously engaged in the advancement of rock drilling performance. Development and modification of the rock drills based on test data are timeconsuming and costly. Hence it is essential to make effective use of numerical simulation. However, most of the numerical models proposed in previous studies were too simple in comparison with the actual percussive rock drilling in which many factors are involved. The objective of our research project is to construct a new realistic numerical model of continuous percussive drilling, which is based on the previous Okubo-Nishimatsu’s model. In this study, the parts of the previous model involved in stress wave propagation and attenuation were modified. The two models were prepared for HD712 hydraulic rock drill mounted on crawler drills and HD210 hydraulic rock drill mounted on drilling jumbos. Stress wave propagation was computed with the discretized one-dimensional wave equation. The calculated results were compared to the stress waves measured on a rod during percussive drilling. In both models for HD712 and HD210, the measured stress waves can be reproduced with the one-dimensional model of the same acoustic impedance as the actual piston, shank rod and rod combined with the CI+spring model as a rod joint. The calculated results indicate that the spring constant in the model of a rod joint needs to be set appropriately depending on drilling conditions. During percussive drilling, the components mutually affect each other and self-induced oscillation occurs. The number of blows and the rate of penetration are determined by the practical drilling conditions such as hydraulic pressure, thrust force, number of rods and mechanical properties of rock. Development and modification of the rock drills based on test data are time-consuming and costly. Hence it is essential to make effective use of numerical simulation. However, most of the numerical models proposed in previous studies were too simple in comparison with the actual percussive rock drilling in which many factors are involved."

"Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located north of Noranda, Quebec, and is a producer of copper and zinc concentrates. Various papers have been given on the mill design, construction and operation. 1, 2This paper is intended to describe the application of computer control to the Lake Dufault milling process. A brief history and description of the plant flowsheet will be given, followed by the reasons for installing the computer and the development of the program up to its present use. The success attained to date, comments on economic justification and future plans will also be given.HISTORY AND FLOWSHEETThe Lake Dufault ore body was discovered in September, 1961, and the mill commenced production during August, 1964. The rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day was reached by October 1, 1964. In milling the Lake Dufault ore, many metallurgical problems have been encountered, mainly due to wide and rapid variations in mill heads and oxidation of the massive sulphide ore. However, flexibility in plant layout and the incorporation of up-to-date instrumentation have facilitated its processing."

As the search for new ore bodies drives mines to be developed at greater depths, the associated high stress environments present challenges for rock support design. Excavations in highly stressed brittle rock are often subject to large volume increases due to rock failure, a phenomenon known as rock mass bulking, which can result in significant wall convergence. Support systems need to be designed to minimize the amount of bulking and to accommodate large wall convergences. In order to design such a support system, empirical guidelines are often used to predict the amount of bulking. However, the empirical guidelines that are currently available are based on a limited number of case studies and consider few input parameters, which may result in an inaccurate bulking assessment. This paper describes methods of collecting quantitative field data at Creighton mine in Canada to better understand rock mass bulking and to further develop the empirical guidelines for bulking assessment for tunnels in highly stressed grounds. The control of feed delivery quality to the flash furnace remains an unsolved problem. Many operations around the world still have limited control of feed quality to their flash furnace. Schenck Process and WorleyParsons continue to work towards the ‘holy grail’ of simple quality feed delivering both radial feed distribution and pulseless feed delivery. Ten years ago they joined forces to offer a system based on then Clyde Process RotoFeed system which could deliver ground level installation, online mixing of materials, pulseless feeding direct to the burner, with good radial distribution. Unfortunately, this proved to be too large a step for the Flash Smelting community and met with resistance from the process owners. Since then the community has developed a range of options some of which have been implemented over this period. Despite these improvements there are still areas of concern including safety issues associated with concentrate leaks and spills, uncontrolled variations in feed rate including massive flooding events, intermittent distribution improvement and set up of the burner continues to be trial and error and hard to repeat the success in each burner campaign. These continue to impact flash furnace performance globally on a daily basis. Following the community reticence to pursue the complete solution a number of interim steps are now available to pave the way to the ultimate feed system. The mixing of material has been installed and is delivering line blended materials on a daily basis. This paper will investigate the developments over the last 10 years and discuss the pros and cons of this incremental step process for overall furnace control. INTRODUCTION Schenck Process and WorleyParsons have continued to interact and observe changes in the flash smelting industry and to consider application of the Clyde RotoFeed now incorporated in the Schenck Process ProStreamTM range for delivery of feed directly to the concentrate or matte burner. Schenck Process pneumatic injection from the Clyde Process range, ProStreamTM, utilises two types of volumetric feeders to accurately control the feed of material into an injection pipeline. These are referred to as the RotoFeed and RotoScrew technologies and the choice of feeder type is dependent on the characteristics of the material to be handled. The RotoFeed is generally used for finer, granular and powdered materials which cannot be accurately handled with a screw such as pulverised coal and copper concentrate, whilst the RotoScrew is particularly suited to coarser lump materials, particularly abrasive of cohesive materials like zinc powder, electronic scrap and metal ashes. Both units can operate at high pressures and many systems work at 3 to 10 bar with the occasional system working at 20 or 30bar for carbon to gasifiers. For the Flash furnace the ProStreamTM units can be used to deliver each of the furnace feed materials into a single line, mixing the materials homogeneously and live to the burner.

North Carolina is the leading state in the USA in feldspar, mica, and spodumene production. Mixed feldspar, spodumene, mica and quartz are mined from hard rock, open pit deposits and recovered by flotation from the fresh pegmatite type ores. Potash feldspar, mica, clay and quartz are recovered from weathered decomposed pegmatites. The North Carolina State University has a Minerals Research Laboratory in Asheville with trained personnel and flexible pilot plant equipment. The flowsheets for the feldspar, spodumene and mica producing companies and for large phosphate and glass sand flotation plants were developed and tested in Asheville. Examples and problems of pegmatite flotation are demonstrated with flowsheets and slides.

"Ore reserves at Brunswick Mining and Smelting totalled 101(106) tonnes grading 97 grams tonne-1 silver at the end of 1981. Silver is recovered as a byproduct in the copper, lead and bulk concentrates and is lost to the zinc concentrate and plant tailings. Recovery of silver for the year 1981 was 58,5%. The loss of potential revenue is in excess of Cdn $50(106) year-1 at current silver prices and milling rates.Silver is known to occur in solid solution in galena and as tetrshedrite. Evidence indicating the identity and significance of a third silverbearing mineral assemblage is reviewed and the distribution of silver losses is detailed. Characteristics of each the carrier which may be responsible for observed distribution, including size, surface quality, liberation and composition are considered, and the third carrier is shown to have possible implications for improved silver recovery by other Canadian producers as well as by Brunswick Mining.Silver tetrahedrite tailings distributed tailings and losses occur as coarse, free and as very fine unliberated galena in losses of the third carrier are between the zinc concentrate and are concentrated in the finest size fractions. Process alternatives for enhanced silver recovery by physical and chemical means are reviewed."

Any attempt at solution of the community problem must give some consideration to the fundamental elements which exist in every community, and to the underlying principles, and ways of life and thought, upon which community life is based. The community is, in its essence, a number of people living and working more or less closely together, sharing common rights, privileges, conveniences, and comforts, which would be impossible for the individual to obtain for himself by his own efforts alone, or in any other way than by the mutual exchange of persona! services and resources. In this way, men have increased the returns from their labour and commerce, have raised the standard of their living, with better social, educational, and recreational facilities, and enjoy a greater personal security.

"Tests were carried out on clear glass blocks containing borehole aligned with and at an angle to applied principal stress states in order to study the growth of drilling induced tensile fractures. The samples were illuminated such that photoelastic fringes could be video recorded during the measurements; this was useful in assessing states of stress and in determining fracture initiation. Axial drilling induced fractures were observed at the azimuths of the applied uniaxial stress as would be expected from the concentrated stresses. En echelon fractures were observed from the borehole deviated at 45° to the direction of the compression. These preliminary and currently qualitative results show that glass blocks serve as a useful test medium for studies of stress concentration and drilling induced fracture creation. INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing exploitation of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs using deviated drilling in recent years, the effects of the in-situ stress on the success of energy production have become more critical than ever before. Knowledge of the state of stress in the earth enables us to determine well trajectories, well locations, hydraulic fracturing design and production rates, but knowing the crustal stress is always challenging. Strictly, it can only be obtained to varying quantitative degrees by accessing the earth through drilling. Failure of the rock at the borehole wall produces borehole breakouts (e.g., Bell & Gough, 1979; Haimson & Herrick, 1986; Zoback et al., 1985) and drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITF) (e.g., Aadnoy, 1990; Aadnoy & Bell, 1998; Barton et al., 1997; Brudy & Zoback, 1999; Davatzes & Hickman, 2010; Peska & Zoback, 1995). Thus, it is important to understand the failure mechanism of the rock in the vicinity of the borehole. A number of closed-form expressions have been developed that allow the stress concentrations to be calculated in the vicinity of a borehole including Kirsch’s (1898) 2-D plane strain solution and 3D formulae for elastically isotropic (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1962) and anisotropic (Lekhnitskii, 1981; Amadei, 1983) continua. These solutions have been applied in numerous studies (e.g., Ong, 1994; Ong & Roegiers, 1996; Vahid & Ghassemi, 2011; Jia & Schmitt, 2014; Ito et al., 2001) to analyze the failure mechanisms of drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITF) on the borehole wall."

This paper gives a brief outline of the mining and milling methods which will be used on the Stirling zinc-lead-copper ores by Stirling Mines, Limited, who have for the past two years been developing the Stirling mine in Richmond county, Nova Scotia, and who will bring the mine into production in November, 1929. No attempt has been made to give the paper a detailed technical character, for the main reason chat, since base-metal mining is something new in Nova Scotia, it is felt that a general description would be preferable before this Society, whose membership is mainly made up of chose engaged in the coal mining and associated industries. Furthermore, as both mining and milling operations will be governed to a certain degree by the experience gained after production commences, there are many points which cannot be definitely stated now. GEOLOGY Before discussing the mining methods, it is desirable to present a general picture of the geology and occurrence of the ore-bodies. The surface rocks in the vicinity of the mine consist of rhyolites of .pre-Cambrian age. These volcanic flows outcrop in very few places, usually along' the beds of creeks or on the shores of the numerous small lakes. Consequently, a detailed geological map is not available. The exploration work carried out to date has revealed a sheared zone extending through the volcanic flows for a distance of over 1,000 feet. Along this zone, there has been a replacement of the rhyolites by a carbonate rock for widths varying from 50 to 230 feet, and it is in this carbonate formation chat the mineralization at a later date took place.
