Over thirty plutons in the Chibougamau-Desmaraisville belt were examined briefly in the field and sampled, in addition to the few masses that have been studied in detail. The survey indicates that the intrusions may be conveniently grouped in four main categories, based on their time of intrusion. These are; remobilized basement domes, pre-kinematic intrusions, syn-kinematic intrusions and postkinematic intrusions. Basement domes, as exemplified by the Lappa rent Massif, are composed of migmatized tonalite-diorite gneiss that has undergone at least two periods of mafic dyke intrusion and at least three major deformational periods. The rise of the basement domes was accompanied by extensive mylonitization and the intrusion of syn-tectonic plutons. Pre-kinematic plutons, such the Chibougamau pluton, are diori te-tonalite in composition, and were intruded into the supracrustal pile and partly eroded before the main deformation of the belt. Syn-kinematic plutons occur principally as marginal intrusions bordering the belt (Barlow), or as discrete intrusions along structural highs (La Dauversiere), and are either hornblende monzodiorite or tonalite in composition. Post-kinematic plutons, such as Muscocho, are principally granodiorite and often porphyritic intrusions locally deforming the enclosing rocks. The close relationship between mineralization and high-level intrusions such as the pre-kinematic and some of the post-kinematic plutons is discussed.

"In 2013, as the prices of precious metals dropped, investors moved their positions to equity markets for higher returns. As a result, the price of gold dropped further to below US$1200 per ounce, prompting additional substantial outflows from gold investments. In response to lagging gold prices, major gold producers initiated large asset write-downs and cost-cutting programmes. In 2015, this trend continues and gold mining stocks are close to lows not seen since the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008. In the current economic climate many projects have marginal economics, and the number of projects that have competitive development and production costs is declining. A competitive edge is particularly important with the decreasing grades of orebodies, increasing complexity of the mineralogy, and increasingly demanding environmental constraints. In addition, higher cost producers seek to optimize their process t o reduce operating costs.This paper presents some highlights of three case studies on optimization of gold leaching strategies that improved the economics of brownfield projects. Processing of sulphide-bearing ores was optimized by using the synergy between cyanide, lead nitrate, and oxygen. The outcomes were significant reduction of retention times while maintaining or increasing gold extraction and reducing cyanide addition and effluent treatment costs. A stirred tank reactor experimental programme led to direct implementation of reliable leaching strategies from laboratory scale to production. This approach resulted in savings of $2.2 million to $15.2 million on the three brownfield projects discussed in this paper."

A new, continuous fire refining process for copper has been developed and tested at the 5 tph pilot scale. During oxidation, the blister copper flows through a packed bed of crushed refractory bricks counter-current to a hot oxygen containing gas. The resulting desulphurized copper flows then directly into a packed bed of charcoal for deoxidation. By controlling the air to natural gas ratio, both temperature and reducing conditions can be controlled. Based on extensive laboratory scale measurements of the rate of copper oxidation and reduction, the process concept was developed aided by process modeling and simulation. The industrial-pilot scale installation built at the ENAMI Paipote smelter in Chile, consists of two cylindrical, compact reactors, operating in line, with a designed capacity of 5 t/h of blister copper. The results of the industrial-pilot tests confirmed the feasibility of the new process. The blister copper processing capacity was increased to 10 t/h with satisfactory sulphur removal. The degree of oxidation as well the copper temperature was controlled with relative ease. The specially designed siphon block allowed for smooth tapping of the oxidized copper and separation of refining slag. The reduction of oxidized copper in the packed bed of charcoal appeared to be very effective while control of the degree of reduction according to the height of the bed ensured control of the oxygen content in the refined copper at the required level.

"Grinding media consumption rates and their dependence on key operating conditions in semiautogenous grinding mills is analyzed on the basis of a detailed mathematical model recently developed by Moly-Cop´s specialists which describes and takes into account the three primary media consumption mechanisms, namely: abrasion/corrosion, surface spalling and impact ball breakage. The influence of key mill operating conditions – such as ball filling, discharge grate opening, mill speed, lifter profile, and ball quality – on their corresponding grinding media consumption rates is explored via a variety of model simulations, discussing in every case the independent contribution of each of the indicated consumption mechanisms to the estimated total ball consumption rate.INTRODUCTIONA thorough understanding of the independent contribution of each grinding media wear mechanism is extremely important, especially in semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) operations where macrowear (spalling) and ball breakage cannot be ignored or neglected. "High carbon rods are typically used as the grinding media in rod mills. Usually an AISI I 090 grade of steel is used which provides the high hardness needed for abrasion resistance and sufficient toughness to prevent rod breakage.Work to improve performance in the past has mainly concentrated on increasing the hardness for improved abrasion resistance. This has been accomplished by adding alloys to the steel which uniformly increase the hardness across the rod section.However uniformly increasing the hardness of the rod produces a more brittle product and at high hardness l1evels can lead to rod breakage problems. Heat treatment processes can be used to selectively increase the surface hardness to high levels while maintaining the core at lower hardness levels to give a product that wears slower without breakage. AltaSteel has developed and mill tested a higher hardness heat treated grinding rodThis paper describes the development of a simple model to predict performance improvement with different hardness profiles and the AltaSteel heat-treated grinding rod process. Mill characteristics of the Endako operation are summarized and predicted performance improvements based on hardmess are compared to the approximate 25% achieved in trials running since July, 1991 at this mill. Early results of other mill trials are also presented.INTRODUCTIONAltaSteel, in Edmonton is a major supplier of grinding media. We have a strong desire to continually increase the quality and performance of our products and thereby improve the efficiency of our customers' processes. In the area of grinding rods, we wanted to produce a product with a significant improvement in wear rate. Second to energy, rod consumption usually represents the next highest cost in processing. This paper presents our development of a heattreated grinding rod that has reduced consumption by about 25% in trials to date."

ABSTRACT In a nickel smelting process, large amounts of off-gas emissions are generated, which can cause serious environmental and plant hygiene problems if not properly treated. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, an enhanced understanding of well-controlled, off-gas cleaning systems is vital. In this paper, dynamic models for an industrial smelter, off-gas system tackling hazardous sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are developed using mass continuity, momentum, and energy conservation laws. The effect of air in-leakage is explored under different operating conditions. The developed models provide an enhanced process understanding and a necessary basis for highperformance control analysis of smelter off-gas systems.

"With stricter limits globally being imposed on cyanide discharge levels in plant tailings, having a reliable and well designed cyanide detoxification circuit is critical for any operation. The INCO SO2/Air method is most commonly used for cyanide detoxification where sulfur dioxide and oxygen combine to oxidize cyanide to the much less toxic cyanate. This paper discusses the steps involved with the development, from laboratory through to design, of a robust cyanide detoxification circuit. The goal is to produce a cyanide detox circuit that reliably meets discharge target with the lowest operating and capital cost.Design begins in the laboratory where continuous tests simulate full scale operation of a detoxification circuit. Detailed design relies on several design parameters, based on theory and experience, to ensure the reactor can satisfy requirements of the cyanide destruction reaction. Selection of the correct reagents and their supply to the reactor is important to an operable process with minimal operator workload. The operability of the system relies on correct process control strategies to maintain optimal reagent addition and chemical conditions in the reactor. These design factors are critical to providing a robust plant that will consistently meet cyanide discharge levels, ensuring uninterrupted production and plant profitability."

In this study, a process integration approach in a primary steelmaking is investigated to evaluate future operation concepts of a steelmaking site considering sustainability issues. Mathematical programming is used to study the integration of the steel plant with chemical units for utilization of available off-gases in the system, and carbon capturing and sequestration unit. Different industrial carbon utilization options are considered to find the best route of development. A multi-period optimization model is developed based on site-wide mass and energy balances by considering the availability of the fuels and by-product gases and their consumption in the production system and a conceptual polygeneration system. The objective is to reach maximum economic profit while environmental aspects of integrated system are considered for different fuel systems, alternative blast furnace reductants and implementation of new process technologies. The model can provide useful information concerning techno-environmental and economic aspects for decision-making and can estimate optimal operational condition of current and future primary steelmaking under alternative scenarios. The results of the work illustrate the potential to develop steelmaking towards more sustainable operation in the future.

Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel has been developed as the most prospective core structural material for next-generation nuclear systems because of its excellent high strength and irradiation resistance. In ODS steel, finely dispersed nano-oxide particles with a high number density in the homogeneous grains can be very attractive to achieve superior mechanical properties at high temperatures, and these favorable microstructures can be significantly changed using process parameters during the mechanical alloying procedures. In this study, the effects of mechanical alloying times on the microstructure of 10Cr-1Mo ODS martensitic steel were investigated. Pre-alloyed powders with Y2O3 powder were mechanically alloyed for various milling times using a high energy horizontal ball-mill apparatus (model: symoloyer CM20). Powder properties such as the mean particle size, size distribution, and crystallite size were evaluated. Uniaxial hot pressing was employed to consolidate the milled powders. The results of a microstructural observation after the MA and UHP processes indicated that the homogeneity of the martensitic structures was considerably increased with the longer milling time. It is thus concluded that the mechanical properties of the ODS martensitic steel are greatly dependent on the mechanical alloying times.

Uranium can be recovered from lower grade uranium ores (<800 mg/kg U3O8), leach residues, and waste dumps cost-effectively via resin-in-pulp (RIP). Using this technology, no solid/liquid separation or washing of the leach residues are required. Furthermore, the uranium recovery can be higher than with conventional methods. RIP technologies have, however, been perceived negatively due to concerns around potential resin fouling and losses. This paper highlights the advancements made in RIP and discusses a number of potential applications where the technology could deliver economic and consequential environmental benefits by reducing the uranium levels in the waste.

The Millennium deposit, located in northern Saskatchewan between the McArthur River mine and the Key Lake mill, has considerable potential for becoming an operating mine. Located in the Athabasca Basin, Millennium is blessed with both the riches and the challenges that this basin offers. The potential for ground water inflows during shaft sinking, and the unconventional challenges associated with underground uranium mining, render the successful development of a new mine in this area especially rewarding. The preliminary design and engineering of the Millennium Project has tapped into the experience of other operations in the area, and has utilized new applications of geophysics technology to enhance the understanding of the local geological structure. This discussion will focus on the innovations, and the challenges specific to uranium mining, for a deposit that is poised to be one of the next mines to supplement Saskatchewan&apos;s uranium resources.

Advanced Process Control has proven to be an effective tool for improving operations by capturing the full process capabilities consistently. However, the velocity of applying the technology as well as the sustainment of these significant benefits has been hampered by the usability of the software and adaptability of the applications.Some of the new technology developments that improve the usability and adaptability of advanced process control include:• modern and intuitive user interfaces,• customizable models to support unique process behavior,• fast and flexible OPC connection tools,• automated model building,• integration with first principles dynamic models and• improved performance monitoring.This paper will briefly discuss the new technology developments that have improved the usability and adaptability of advanced process control and how this can affect minerals processing operations.In today’s environment, Minerals Processing plant managers continuously face new challenges and requirements including:• higher energy efficiency,• increased run lengths,• reduced product quality variability,• reduced emissions,• higher availability, and• lower operating costsOperating a unit to meet these challenges in real time is not easy for operators and conventional process control systems. "Conventionally, direct reduced iron (DRI) mixed with char from rotary furnace discharge is cooled down before separating the char via magnetic separator. The DRI must then be reheated for further downstream processing (i.e. smelting). Outotec has developed the PyroMagTM specifically to conserve thermal energy during this separation process. DRI is cleaned by feeding hot particles directly after reduction onto a rotating surface just above a stationary magnet assembly. This allows hot feeding of the clean DRI to the downstream equipment which renders the entire process more energy efficient.Continuous testing of the PyroMagTM was performed to verify design and separation. Because the use of DRI/char was not practical for test use, the pilot plant testing was conducted using a magnetite/sand mixture heated up to and beyond the Curie temperature of magnetite. The separation was efficient for both cold and hot processing with recoveries varying from 98.6% to 99.74%. As expected, the recoveries decreased to as low as 83.99% as the temperature was increased beyond the curie temperature of magnetite (585°C). Long term separation was thermally efficient and sustainable.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic drum separators are widely used in the mineral processing industry. These low to high intensity magnetic separators are used to concentrate various magnetic material, such as iron ore, and less magnetic materials, such as ilmenite and garnet from silica and other contaminantsThere are multiple classes of magnetism based on the effect that each material displays while in and out of a magnetic field. In a simplified fashion, which is more appropriate for mineral processing, the magnetic susceptibility of a mineral is used to define it as being ferromagnetic, paramagnetic or nonmagnetic. In this respect, minerals with varying degree of magnetic susceptibility can be selectively separated with different types of magnetic separation equipment in different stages of a process flow sheet. The lower strength magnets are employed early in the process to remove highly magnetic fractions. Later stages utilize greater magnetic fields for capture of less magnetically susceptible material."

This paper proposes a charge induction dust measurement method based on detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) for use in coal mine environments, based upon electrostatic interference, dust properties, wind speed, particle size, moisture content and other factors. In this methods, sequence x(t) is first obtained through a dust concentration sensing probe, and then the cumulative deviation y(t) is calculated, and y(t) is divided into same lengths. Secondly, a first-order linear fit is used for data of each interval, and mean-square deviation filtered DFA was calculated for each interval. Finally, the dust mass concentration of the corresponding time is obtain by supplemented calibration coefficient and fitted the data point which is the mean and square root for all lengths of interval. Simulation and verification experiments showed that the charge induction dust measurement method based on DFA can reduce coal mine electrostatic interference effects with high accuracy. The design has been successfully applied to select areas.

"The production of salable Rare Earth Element (REE) products necessitates a sequence of chemical separation steps between the mine and market commodities. The effectiveness of the chemical separations that purify REE salts is critical to the success of the producer, as the purity of REE salt products affects their market price. This is due to the fact that impurities in REE salts, even at low levels, can be deleterious to the function and usability of the end product. The purification of REE by removal of low levels of contaminant has been referred to as "product polishing". The technologies commonly in use for product polishing, solvent extraction (SX) and ion exchange (IEX) are challenged by the availability of separation chemistries to separate the contaminant from the desired REE salt. In simple terms, if a product specification is 99.9% purity, the SX or IEX separation reagents need to have at least a 999:1 selectivity ratio. Significant testing has been carried out on the use of solid phase extraction (SPE) columns to extract low-level impurities such as aluminum or zinc from REE product streams. The SPE columns are nano-composite materials that have rapid equilibration kinetics with the solutes being processed by the columns. The SPE matrices have been modified with chelating ion exchange ligands that bind the contaminating ion with great selectivity in residence times of a few seconds. Thus, REE streams with 1 to 2% of contaminating aluminum ions, have been polished to >99.99% purity. In this paper, results are presented on the removal of aluminum impurity from a didymium (neodymium+praseodymium) product stream using SPE technology. The selection of the SPE medium and the process steps to treat the feed solution for aluminum removal and ultimate stripping and recycle of the solid phase extractant are discussed."

An efficient and accurate three-dimensional (3-D) contact detection algorithm is of vital importance in large-scale computing of discontinuous deformation analysis. The contact detection algorithm takes up a large proportion of the whole calculation time because of the increasing calculation number in three-dimensional case. For block systems which consist of convex polyhedrons, the efficiency and accuracy of the contact detection algorithm is a great challenge. The presented contact detection algorithm in discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method is carried out in three phases: the global neighbour searching, the local contact type searching and the contact transferring. A contact detection algorithm for 3-D DDA is presented with some improvements on the three phases. A grid-based global neighbour searching algorithm is used to eliminate unnecessary neighbour blocks to the exact number. The local contact type searching includes two steps. In the first step, the common plane method is used to determine the contact type between convex polyhedrons. In the second step, the contact pairs detected by the common plane method are divided into four basic types. In the third phase, the four contact types are transferred into two basic contact types, vertex-to-face contact type and edge-to-edge contact type, which are managed in a uniform procedure. Three verification examples are calculated, the results show that the proposed algorithm based on the three contact detection phases is robust and efficient.
