The total production of nonferrous metals in China is 31.35 million tons in 2010, which ranks first in the world for the past ten years. Large quantities of solid wastes including slag, residue, ash, and dust are produced every year in the production of nonferrous metals. These secondary resources are renewable, not only contain abundant valuable metals which can be recycled by metallurgical processing, but also could eliminate the pollution to the environment. In this paper, the status quo of the main nonferrous metals recycling in metallurgical industries in China was summarized, and the future development of waste processing and resource recycling was prospected.

The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace (CL- furnace) for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. The conditions in the CL- furnace change its settling efficiency, resulting in high variability of copper losses in slag. Modifications of the operation and maintenance procedures for the CL-furnace have significantly and sustainably reduced the copper losses in Gresik smelter to below 0.7%. A series of flow patterns evaluation in the CL-furnace demonstrated how the chemical reactions and settling conditions of the CL-furnace has been improved by the new operating procedures. Settling mechanisms for the matte droplets in the CL-furnace is also discussed using image analysis of solidified slag. INTRODUCTION The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace (CL- furnace) for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. Since the top-blowing in the S- furnace agitates the molten bath strongly, matte droplets are dispersed over the slag phase when melts flow out of the S-furnace. Thus, the CL-furnace has an important role to settle and recover matte droplets efficiently. Since many papers have ascribed major part of copper losses to matte droplets suspended in slag (Tanaka 2007; Genevski et al., 2008; Starodub et al., 2016), flow patterns of slag in the CL-furnace can affect greatly on the profitability of smelters which have adopted the Mitsubishi process. PROCESS DESCRIPTION Figure 1 illustrates the Mitsubishi process schematically. The Mitsubishi process is the only system for continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates and consists of 3 furnaces connected by enclosed launders those ensure the minimum emission of fugitives. In a smelting furnace (S-furnace) copper concentrates are fed with flux, oxygen-enriched air to form a mixture of slag and matte which cascades down to a slag-cleaning furnace (CL-furnace). The CL-furnace settle matte droplets in the mixture on the crucible from which matte is siphoned to a converting furnace (C-furnace), while discharging the cleaned slag (CL-slag). The C-furnace converts matte to blister copper by the top-blowing of oxygen- enriched air.

Industrial smelting furnaces are subjected to significant structural changes and deterioration caused by the conditions under which they operate. The current methods for the structural assessment of furnaces include visual inspections, analysis of thermal data, acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) of the refractory lining and surveying of the key structural elements. Acoustic Emission (AE) non-destructive testing (NDT) technique has proven its capabilities for continuous monitoring of industrial installations and structures. Recently, Hatch Ltd. has been successful in applying acoustic emission for monitoring furnace tapblocks, and expanding the scope of the acoustic emission monitoring to the structural integrity of the entire furnace. The capability of detecting emissions related to the fracture development in the furnace shell, movement of the refractory, electrode arcing, combined with efficient source location algorithms makes an acoustic emission system a comprehensive tool for the real-time furnace integrity monitoring. In this paper the concept of such state of the art system for structural integrity assessment is presented. The initial results of the acoustic emission monitoring together with data analysis techniques are discussed.

Statistics shows that the majority of accidents with fatal outcome are caused by methane and/or coal dust explosion. This leads to assume that contemporary counter-explosion systems of various designs cannot be considered effective. Considering the growing threat of methane explosion in the coming years along with the development of deeper levels, the improvement of a system for protecting people in underground opening appears urgent. This paper presents the results of the testing of the Automatic System from Methane Explosion in Coal Mines. The protective system consists of: i) a wireless device for the detection of explosions and activation of a protective system, and ii) an absorber with a pyrotechnic device ensuring the discharge of dispersed water. The protective system, at the command of the initiation signal, produces tailored dispersing water mist with droplet sizes in the range of 25?400 ?m along selected tunnel sections.

Because of the adverse environmental effect of Chromate, Molybdate ions had been investigated as replacement for Chromate and the results had shown not to be encouraging. Film deposited from peroxopolymolybdate (from reaction of Molybdenum meta, with excess Hydrogen Peroxide), are more robust than that deposited from molybdate solutions. This was shown to be due to higher fraction of Mo (IV) and Mo (V) that form from Mo (VI) in the peroxopolymolybdate deposited film than the film deposited from Molybdate solutions. The peroxopolymolybdate film contains 40% un-hydrated molybdic acid, tetraperoxodimolybdate and tetra peroxo tetra molybdate. The protective properties of peroxopolymolybdate were shown to be due to the effectiveness of the un-hydrated molybdic acid.

"Sulphide ores under certain circumstances will react with explosives to generate an autocatalytic chemical reaction. This reaction is exothermic and results in the production of large volumes of poisonous gases and creates an unsafe, unstable condition with the possibility of a low energy deflagration or even a detonation of the loaded hole. This paper outlines the conditions that need to exist for such a reaction to take place and the precautions necessary to minimize or eliminate the problem in areas of reactive ore. The preparation of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-monolayer-protected clusters (PNIPAM-MPC) of gold nanoparticles was carried out in a homogeneous phase using three ways, in which three types of PNIPAM ligands were employed. The first type comprised of PNIPAMs with narrow molar mass distributions, synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and thus, bearing a dithiobenzoate at the chain end. These polymers were used directly to passivate the gold nanoparticles upon the Schiffrin reaction in a one-pot synthesis. The second type of ligands was derived from the first one through hydrazinolysis, and they therefore contained a thiol end group. The third type of ligands was PNIPAMs obtained through conventional radical polymerization, post-modified to contain thiol end groups. The PNIPAM-MPCs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and by dynamic light scattering. The one-pot synthesis utilizing the ligands of the first type turned out to be a simple and facile method, compared with the other two ways, with which the size of the gold nanoparticles can be easily manipulated mainly by adjusting the molar ratios of PNIPAM / HAuCl4. PNIPAM is a more efficient ligand to stabilize the gold nanoparticles in water and in organic solvents than alkanethiols. The surface density of PNIPAM chains ranged from 1.8 to 3.6 chain/nm2, which is much lower than that typical for alkanethiols. The thickness of a PNIPAM monolayer bound to the gold core is somewhat larger than the size of the random coil of corresponding free PNIPAM in aqueous solution, which suggests that the conformation of a PNIPAM chain bound to the gold core is to extended.

Material interfaces and typical boundary conditions are boundaries influencing the existence, uniqueness and stability of numerical solutions of water flow in heterogeneous media. The Numerical Manifold Method (NMM) with a two-cover-meshing system is an ideal method to handle boundaries, considering its flexibility with no need to adjust mathematical nodes onto boundaries, the meshing efficiency, and its integration precision. In this study, we derive and compare two new approaches for boundary constraints, i.e., a discontinuous approach with Lagrange multiplier and a continuous approach with jump function in the frame of NMM. In the discontinuous Lagrange multiplier method (LMM), Dirichlet boundaries or the material interfaces are regarded as discontinuities which are linked by Lagrange multipliers. In the continuous Jump function method (JFM), the material interfaces are regarded as inner interfaces, where the refraction law is realized by constructing jump terms with discontinuity of hydraulic gradient in its normal direction. Both the continuous and discontinuous approaches make full use of the aforementioned advantages of NMM and are established based on a clear physical meaning of water flow by our energy-work seepage model. The newly derived boundary-constraint approaches were coded into an NMM water flow model and tested for precision and efficiency on different simulation examples. We first tested both LMM and JFM for an idealized heterogeneous model, comparing the numerical results with analytical solutions. Then we tested both approaches with a heterogeneous model and compared the results of hydraulic head and specific discharge. We proved that both approaches are very suitable for material boundaries considering the accurate realization of the boundary constraints and the flexibility with no need for mesh-conforming.

This research project which took place at Brunswick Mining and Smelting's Brunswick mine, was undertaken to assess the ability of new diesel engine technology to meet current and anticipated underground worker exposure limits to diesel exhaust contaminants. Concentrations of CO, CO2 NO, NO2 SO2 and respirable combustible dust (RCD) were measured in a remote mine area where a haulage truck was operating under simulated duty cycles. The 26 ton haulage truck was equipped with a 300 hp, electronically controlled engine. Fresh air was supplied to the area as per the MSHA certification document for this particular engine. Results showed that while the vehicle operated in a normal and realistic duty cycle, the concentrations of contaminants remained well below the ACGIH guidelines for the threshold limit values (TLV)for exposure. While operating at 630/0 of maximum horsepower (26 tons of ore in the dump), the time-weighted average exhaust gases concentrations (CO, CO2 NO, NO2 and SO2) never exceeded 150/0 of their respective TL Vs. ReD concentrations in this instance were measured at 0.59 mg/mJ or 39.30/0 of the exposure limit suggested by the Canadian ad hoc Diesel Committee. The Air Quality Index was 1.55 or 520/0 of the maximum suggested value for exposure.

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The primary assumption of the model was that all matte, slag and gaseous phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the matte components were considered only as copper, iron and sulfur elements. In the slag making stage, all the reacted iron was converted to fayalite. The reaction rate of iron and oxygen in this stage was considered to be constant. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balance over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depends on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency and molten emissivity.

"Effective January 1, 1990, mines in British Columbia are subject to a new provincial mining tax statute, the Mineral Tax Act. Under this Act, mines are subject to a two-tier tax system, with a minimum tax payable on ""net current proceeds"" and a higher tax paid on net income. For many mines, the present value of tax paid under the new rules should be comparable to the amount paid under the old rules. Earlier cash payments could pose difficulties, particularly for smaller mines, but existing producing mines could benefit in the short-term.IntroductionEffective January 1, 1990, British Columbia has replaced the provincial mining tax regime under the Mineral Resources Tax Act with a new system under the Mineral Tax Act. "The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumedlate Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: mon-zonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group ofrocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr,Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or miningdistrict, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cuand Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1)porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfde deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, east-west, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolutionof the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic min-eralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magmamay have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Workplace safety, health, climatic conditions and rising oil prices are aspects that are important to the mining industry. The need for cleaner energy for underground mine vehicles is requiring serious consideration. A number of alternate energy systems offer clean solutions to diesel emissions while maintaining the current liberty of vehicle movement. This watershed article provides a broad comparison of cleaner diesel and alternative energies for underground production vehicles. Most alternate energies and clean diesel have already been tested in underground production vehicles. There are no technology gaps that would prevent the development of commercial alternative energy power plants, but in the case of alternate energies, second and third generation versions will be required to fully test for safety and operation viability. Full regulatory development is also required and could be done in parallel to power plant testing. Vehicle operation and maintenance manpower would be the same for alternate energy application as for clean diesel. Capital cost for alternate energy power plants will remain higher until the medium term. Owing to significant ventilation savings possible with alternate technologies, operating costs would be reduced.

"The use of autogenous mills has become widespread, owing to their capacity and favorable capital and operating costs. Optimal operation of these systems is critical, given their high energy consumption and effect on downstream processing. A considerable effort has been spent over the years in the development of advanced control systems to achieve a better performance in this regard. However, despite significant advances, the problem still remains challenging, owing to the nonlinear behaviour of the system with respect to the mill variables, and, the unmeasured ore variability come from the mine.The mill load, in particular, can be seen as a state variable of the mill, which could be important for; modelling and control, and, important insights into the mill behaviour. In this investigation, time series cluster analysis was performed using online mill load measurements in order to identify the different control states of the mill. More specifically, this time series was divided into short non-overlapping segments. A distance matrix was set up for each segment and the information was captured by means of textural features, similar to that used in multivariate image analysis. These wavelet and grey level cooccurrence matrix features could subsequently be used to rapidly identify the normal operating conditions from the feed disturbances in the mill.In principle, the methods and models presented here, once suitably validated and calibrated, could be used in online process monitoring of autogenous mills. They also could serve as a foundation for developing more advanced process control models."

"THE Wabana iron ore mines, owned and operated by the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, Limited, .are on Bell Island in Conception bay, on the east coast of Newfoundland. Mining began on surface in 1895 and, although open-pit work is still done on a small scale, the entire output may be considered to•be derived from extensive submarine workings. In 1958 the average daily production of hematite ore was close to 12,000 tons, almost all of which was concentrated in a heavy-media plant. SUMMARYThe character, occurrence, and extent of the submarine bedded deposits enabled early operators to meet prevailing market demands with the minimum attention paid to exploration. Mechanization of the mine and the pressure for sustained high tonnages since 1955 have emphasized the importance of an expanded exploration and development programme.A serious handicap has been the impossibility of utilizing normal diamond drilling methods to explore ore conditions in advance of mining faces. Drilling between tl1e bedded zones has been done but the major difficulty has been to delineate ore reserves in the lower bed, which has the greatest ore potential of the three mineable seams."
