"After having performed qualitative and quantitative tests on nearly 550 rock specimens from tunnel projects throughout the world and comparing the results with actual boring in eight distinctly different rock types which varied in compressive strength from 12,000 to over 34,000 psi, it has been concluded that any rock -andesite, granite and even taconite -can be machine-bored. The question is -can it be bored economically? The intent of this paper is to delineate the investigative needs to accurately and reliably answer this question. A piece of NX core in the hand represents less than 50 per cent of the worthwhile geologic information that could have been obtained from a given core hole. A thorough site investigation by competent personnel can gene-rally foretell to what extent, if any, varying geologic conditions will hinder machine progress.A laboratory testing technique has been developed that has been correlated well (80 to 120 per cent) with actual boring results. This technique will be discussed in detail. Rock cutter life is a function of the penetration rate and the forces required to sustain that rate. Cutters are now, and will be for .some time to come, the single, most expensive consumable item involved in continuous tunneling in hard rock. It is by strict attention to predicting these rates and forces that tunneling costs can be optimized."

One hundred thousand miles of flying over the North country without a single air casualty; much of it over virgin territory probably never before visited by white men; some of it over regions that abound with possibilities for minerals; all of it effective, for exploration and the establishment of bases and supply-stations, and for the carrying of men and their tools and provisions- this, briefly, is the record of Northern Aerial Minerals Exploration, Limited, a Canadian company organized Jess than nine months ago, which has been functioning, without interruption, during spring, summer, and now into winter. Our planes have ranged from the Alaskan boundary on the west to the Labrador coast on the east, and from the Transcontinental railway north to the Arctic circle. Our prospectors, carried on trips of hundreds, and occasionally thousands, of miles, have gone over large sections of country which were never before explored, and at the end of the prospecting season the Company finds itself in possession of several groups of important gold claims, which look most promising. In addition to this, we have been in contact with deposits of almost every known mineral.

"Construction of underground excavations in squeezing ground conditions faces several technical challenges that can result in delays in production and high costs due to rehabilitation. A review of the behaviour of drifts under squeezing ground conditions was undertaken at the LaRonde mine. In particular it focused on implemented strategies to control the observed large deformations. The mine experiences a large range of squeezing ground conditions, mostly driven by the presence of foliation and high stresses. This results in large deformations over one meter in radius. A comprehensive ground control strategy has been implemented with the aim to manage, rather than arresting drift closure. The evolution and effectiveness of the employed support strategy are discussed based on documented field observations. In complement to the field implementation numerical models are used to provide further insight on the observed squeezing conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe development of underground excavations under squeezing ground conditions is usually associated with excessive rehabilitation and significant failure of ground support due to large deformations. Cost research case studies have concentrated on squeezing ground conditions in tunnelling. An overview of the methods used for the identification and quantification of squeezing and the numerical methods for the simulation of these conditions in tunnelling has been provided by Barla (2002). Numerous support systems that can manage ground deformation are available for civil engineering tunnelling. Nevertheless, the use of these systems in mining would result in high support cost and production delays. Mining operations have higher development rates and shorter service life. This study focuses on the behaviour of underground excavations under squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mining.In a mining context, the magnitude of deformation is usually higher than in civil engineering tunnelling as there is a higher tolerance for operation purposes. Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) noted that in mining, squeezing is encountered when the total displacement of an excavation reaches at least tens of centimeters over the life expectancy of a supported drive and is associated with considerable damage to the ground support."

"IntroductionThe purpose of sampling is to remove a portion of material from a stream which is representative of it in size, moisture and mineral content.To prevent the effects of segregation, generally caused by the way in which a conveyor, pipe or launder is loaded or directed, the sampler should cut proportionally the entire cross section of the stream.If one conveyor transfers to another at a right angle, fines may be dropped on the near side, and the coarse material thrown to the opposite side. Segregation can also occur as a result of the motion of a conveyor belt passing over the idlers causing the coarse material to roll to the sides of the belt.When slurry changes direction of flow in a launder or pipe, the heavier and coarser fraction will centrifuge to the outside of the curve and tend to remain on one side of the stream. Similarly, if two streams joining in a common launder are not mixed at the point of confluence, they will continue down the launder unmixed . This effect is particularly noticeable in a plastic lined launder.Therefore, a proportional sample is usually accomplished by a constant rate of cutter travel across the entire stream, making certain that the cutter is not full or splashing over before reaching the end of travel.The cutter should operate on a constant interval based on time, tonnage and uniformity of flow. The opening should be at least three times the width of the largest piece to be sampled. The cutter width is more critical with ore samples where particle sizes are large. With slurry samples, the opening is usually much larger than the minimum in order to obtain sufficient samples"

THE Geological Survey was created in 1842 to aid the development of Canada's mineral resources. Although the institution has been in existence for nearly 100 years and has accomplished an immense amount of work, the need for its services remains as great as ever and, indeed, it is difficult to imagine a time when the country will no longer require a Geological Survey. This is so because of the tremendous effort required to make an adequate geological examination of so large an area as is embraced by Canada and partly because what today may seem an adequate geological examination proves, later on, to be inadequate. The ultimate objective of the Geological Survey is to complete the study of all phases of the geology of Canada, that is, to determine how and when the physical features originated, how and when the soils and other unconsolidated deposits were formed, and how and when the solid rocks and associated deposits were produced and assumed their present conditions. When the study has been completed, any only then, will it be possible to make a reliable estimate of the country's mineral resources. This appraisal embraces more than determining the value of already discovered deposits: it also involves attempting to establish what kinds of undiscovered deposits may be present and where they may occur. The estimating of the potential mineral wealth can be clone only after the geology of the country is known. Not until then will it be possible to forecast what types of valued deposits may occur in a district and what types will almost certainly be lacking. A thorough knowledge of the geology of the country is desirable not only to permit estimating the potential mineral resources but also as an aid in locating and developing mineral deposits whether these are of the nature of a bed of limestone, a seam of coal, a reservoir of petroleum, a vein, an irregular body of sulphides, or any other type of deposit.

The paper will cover the basic reasons for alkaline leaching, a brief description of the circuit and the reasons for the flowsheet used. Changes made to the flowsheet, including the use of mechanical agitation of pachuca slurry, the use of oxygen and its effect on extraction, the use of lime and its effect on process economy, and the environment, will be described. A brief description of a unique semi-autogenous mill and future circuit changes will be included.

Increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) is expected to lead to new development and expansion in industries processing and or recycling REE. For some industrial operators, sending aqueous waste streams to a municipal wastewater treatment plant, or publicly owned treatment works (POTW), may be a cost effective disposal option. However, wastewaters that adversely affect the performance of biological wastewater treatment at the POTW will not be accepted. The objective of our research is to assess the effects of wastewaters that might be generated by new rare earth element (REE) beneficiation or recycling processes on biological wastewater treatment systems. We have been investigating the impact of yttrium and europium on the biological activity of activated sludge collected from an operating municipal wastewater treatment plant. We have also examined the effect of an organic complexant that is commonly used in REE extraction and separations; similar compounds may be a component of newly developed REE recycling processes. Our preliminary results indicate that in the presence of Eu, respiration rates for the activated sludge decrease relative to the no-Eu controls, at Eu concentrations ranging from <10 to 660 µM. Yttrium appears to inhibit respiration as well, although negative impacts have been observed only at the highest Y amendment level tested (660 µM). The organic complexant appears to have a negative impact on activated sludge activity as well, although results are variable. Ultimately the intent of this research is to help REE industries to develop environmentally friendly and economically sustainable beneficiation and recycling processes.

Despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary, the mining industry is not in decline. Rather, the world?s largest mining companies are among the most consistently profitable companies in any industry. In many cases, profitable mining companies have been built around a few large scale, long life mines. These criteria for success ? size and long life ? have led to the current preference for deposits that can be exploited using open pit methods. However, developments in the science of block caving have resulted in this mining method achieving costs and productivities that are competitive with the largest open pits, while achieving widespread applicability. One implication of the low costs and widespread applicability of block caving is that some current open pits are possibly too deep.

"For the last three years (1967-9) the value of the output of mineral resources in the Province of Ontario exceeded one billion dollars per year. To produce this great wealth, it was necessary for the mining industry in Ontario to dispose of an estimated 80 million tons of waste mill tailings. Some of these tailings were returned underground but the greater proportion was disposed of above ground in lakes, watercourses, marshy areas and in engineered impoundment basins. This volume of tailings, if accumulated in one location would cover an area of 1000 acres to a height of almost thirty feet. The provision of proper disposal of the waste mill tailings in a manner such that they will not create problems in the environment is one of the costs which must be borne from the extraction of such a wealth from our mineral resources. It is principally the potential water pollution which may occur as a result of the indiscriminate discharges of waste mill tailings which is of concern to the Ontario Water Resources Commission.ONTARIO WATER RESOURCES COMMISSIONThe Ontario Water Resources Commission was formed in 1956 and operates under the Ontario Water Resources Commission Act. The object of this paper is to present for your consideration some of the present-day trends of safety practice in the coal mines in the United States and Canada. Coal mining at its best is a hazardous occupation. Men must be experienced miners in order to appreciate the existing hazards and must remain ever conscious of them if they are to work safely. The question is often asked whether our efforts for increased safety are showing results. So often it appears that strides are made for a period of a few years in the reduction of fatalities and lost-time accidents only to have all ground lost by an unfortunate year, after which progress is commenced again only to have a repetition of the same thing. Table No. 1 is an answer to this question. It shows the fatality rates over the last two decades in the coal mines of the United States and Canada. These are given in divisions of five years. The general trend is noticeably downward, exceptions being due to explosions or disasters which claimed an unusually heavy toll of life. These last are certainly not as common today as they have been in the past. It is only reasonable to suppose that this trend towards a lower fatality rate is the result of well directed safety effort. Reliable statistical organizations have offered figures to the effect that only 15 per cent of all accidents can be eliminated by the use of mechanical safeguards. The state of mind of the man involved, or his attitude towards safety, commonly called &apos;safety-consciousness,&apos; is the controlling factor in the prevention of 85 per cent of our accidents.

"IntroductionCoal deposits are found in many regions in Canada and vary widely in their age, quality and rank. All classifications of coal except anthracite are found in significant quantities in this country.Deposits in the Maritimes are mainly bituminous; Lignite is found in Saskatchewan and Ontario and sub-bituminous coal in the plains region of Alberta. The Rocky Mountain coalfields of Alberta and British Columbia contain low and high-volatile bituminous coal and, in a few places, semi-anthracite. The British Columbia interior contains deposits of semi-anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous coals and lignite. The Yukon and Northwest Territories also contain substantial deposits of bituminous coal and lignite.Currently Nova Scotia produces both thermal and metallurgical coal, Saskatchewan produces lignite and Alberta produces both sub-bituminous and bituminous coal for thermal purposes. Large deposits of metallurgical coal are now being exploited in the Rockies arefl of British Columbia and Alberta by open pit methods. The raw coal is treated in large capacity preparation plants to remove refuse and upgrade the product to a consistent metallurgical quality with respect to ash, moisture, volatile matter and coking properties.The treatment of coal involves crushing, screening and cleaning by dense medium, jigs, water-only cyclones, tables and froth flotation to produce a diverse range of coal products differing in quality and size for various end uses.The chapter on Crushing and Screening Circuits was concerned mainly with crushing of metalliferous ores to produce a concentrate of one or more valuable minerals which normally constitute a small portion of the original mass of the material treated.Coal differs physically from ores in many ways such as lower specific gravity, relatively large volumes but low tonnage of product, and its habit of absorbing moisture requires extensive dewatering processes more complicated than settlement and filtration. Most significant, for this paper at least, is the fact that crushing coal is not as energy intensive and much smaller equipment is applicable.Crushing and screening of ores is intended to reduce the size of all constituents as quickly and efficiently as possible to allow liberation of the mineral particles. The crushing of coal is different in that the coal is not the minor constituent and the production of fines, in the initial stages at least, is highly undesirable. The basic objectives of crushing coal are the reduction of run-of-mine material to sizes suitable for cleaning or further reduction of coal to market sizes."

A New Field for the Mining Industry A new field for the mining industry is in prospect. This is the recovery of the petroleum which has been left in the ground in the older oil fields whose yield has declined until they are no longer profitable to operate in the ordinary way. The fact that an oil field has reached the economic limit for operation by pumping does not necessarily &apos;mean that the oil has ? been exhausted. In many such cases not over one-fifth, or even one-tenth, of the total oil content of the field may have been taken out when this stage has been reached. This means that there exists a large reserve of oil which can be recovered by whatever process best takes advantage of the natural conditions under which the oil occurs. Mine drainage is one of the processes by which this oil may be recovered. Its relative importance will depend partly on the ingenuity and wide-awakeness of mining engineers, and on mining capital. The opportunity is undoubtedly at hand. In order that we may be in a position to judge the possible advantages of mining methods for the recovery of this oil, I have reviewed, on the following pages, the methods now in use, and have discussed the physical conditions of the reservoir rocks in which the oil is found, and the suitability of the various recovery processes, in use or proposed, in the light of these reservoir conditions.

In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. ABSTRACT The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment recognizes the importance of environmental protection as an important contributor to Saskatchewan’s economy, with the environmental performance of industry closely monitored. Unfortunately, environmental regulation is often accompanied by significant process that does not always add value to environmental protection activities. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has embarked on a visionary restructuring of its regulatory framework from conventional command and control regulation to a results-based regulatory framework. This new regulatory framework will provide for establishing clear environmental protection and resource management objectives; streamlining the environmental acts and regulations; developing an environmental code of practice; relying on qualified persons; enhancing compliance and enforcement tools; eliminating of many permits; and developing greater certainty in environmental assessment decisions. Results-based regulation promises to deliver enhanced environmental protection with less process. The uranium industry in Saskatchewan will be used as an example of the potential effects of results-based regulation.

Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations, to assess the uncertainty of minable reserves at the project?s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ?correct? (or ?accurate?) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc ?uncertainty model? provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered and the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme. The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open and underground mine in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more ?traditional? resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit.

The programmable Logic Controller (PLC), at its present stage of evolution, is now considered as a mature control system. The PLC combines the solid-state reliability of hardwired logic and computer control systems with the simplicity of a relay ladder logic. Relay symbolic programming through a function-oriented keyboard provides a means which plant personnel can easily become accustomed to work with. In a large coal facility, it is shown that the control engineer can provide improved control flexibility with the advanced capabilities of the PLC.

Some of the negative impacts of carbon addition on the strength of castables are yet to be overcome in order to fulfill its potential benefits for oxidation resistance. This paper reports the results of recent studies conducted at CIREP on the effects of different types of carbon additives on the thermo-mechanical properties of magnesia-based castables. Experimental techniques included measurements of the hot modulus of rupture (HMOR), hot modulus of elasticity (HMOE), as well as the wedge-splitting test (WST). The comparison of evolving microstructures was carried out employing scanning electron microscopy with microanalysis attachment (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). HMOR values of 12 MPa at 1300°C have been reached in MgO-Si02-C castables containing up to 7% carbon.

Gas and oil seeps have been known in Quebec for more than one hundred years. These occur in three main areas which contain sedimentary rocks with a total thickness estimated to vary from 6,000 to 20,000 feet. The strata in these areas are similar in many respects to those in producing areas of southwestern Ontario and the Appalachian basin, and the prospects for finding and developing commercial reserves of oil and gas in Quebec would therefore also appear to be favourable. Little of the exploratory drilling to date has been con-ducted in a systematic manner, and most of the drilling has utilized improper or inadequate equipment. Many wells have also failed to adequately test and fully evaluate the principal zones of interest. Relatively high drilling costs have hindered systematic exploration; however, with improved portable equipment, it is expected that future wells can be drilled with greater efficiency and at less cost. Most of the mineral rights in Quebec are held by the Provincial Government, and acreage can still be leased in large blocks on favourable terms.

"The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."
