"The Gem molybdenum prospect is situated at the head-waters of Clear creek, between the Fraser river and Harrison lake, about 30 miles north of• Harrison Hot Springs, B.C. Clear creek follows a deeply eroded fault zone southwesterly through the center of the claim group. Elevations range from 2,000 feet in the creek bed up the steep slopes flanking the creek to a height of 5,500 feet. The property lies within an area underlain by schists and gneisses which strike from north to west in a broad fold plunging steeply to the northeast. This metamorphic complex has been invaded by numerous bodies of grano-diorite, much of which is gneissic. A granite plug, roughly 2,400 by 4,000 feet in size, has intruded this broad fold just west of Clear creek and encloses a circular breccia pipe 1,500 feet in diameter. In the breccia pipe, fragments of metamorphic rocks, granite and quartz monzonite porphyry are firmly cemented in a matrix of quartz monzonite porphyry. All the above rocks are cut by numerous fractures filled by vuggy quartz veins, many of which contain molybdenite. Attentien was first drawn to the area by a quartz vein, 18 inches in width, known as the Gem vein, which consists of several laminated bands of quartz and molybdenite. Since 1964, exploration efforts have been directed toward attempting to outline a large, low-grade type of molybdenum deposit."

PILLAR extraction at the Sullivan Mine bas been in progress for over twenty-five years and bas .involved progressively larger pillars. The largest pillar blasted to date exceeds one million tons and is described in this paper. This blast is believed to be one of the largest to take place entirely under-ground. The Sullivan Mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, is located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia on the east flank of the Purcell range overlooking the twenty-mile wide Rocky Mountain Trench (Figure 1). The orebody is a bedded replacement deposit in argillites, varying in thickness up to 300 feet, but averaging about 80 feet. Above the 3900 Level, the dip varies from nearly horizontal to 40 degrees; be-low the 3900 Level it varies from 45 to 20 degrees (Figure 2). "AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. "An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of column flotation versus conventional flotation for the recovery of molybdenite from a Newfoundland ore. The objective was to verify the claims made by the inventors of the flotation column, Messrs. Pierre Boutin and Remi Tremblay, that their apparatus reduces the entrainment of fine gangue and other mineral impurities in the froth product. The research included a factorially designed series of tests to determine satisfactory operating conditions of the column. These provided a basis for comparative flotation tests with column and Denver cells. In the course of the work, the action of a few depressants was studied. Results indicated greater selectivity in the column and reduced reagent consumption."

"IT IS KNOWN that some ores of sulphide type, such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, and bornite have an electrical conductivity comparable to that of metals, and accordingly much higher than the conductivity of any unmineralized rock. This physical property has long been used for the detection of orebodies of this kind by means of electrical measurements made at the surface of the ground.The present paper will deal with a new electromagnetic instrument for the investigation of subsurface conductors, which has been recently introduced into field practice and has already led to successful results in Canada.The principle of the instrument will be described. How it operates, and how the observations made can be interpreted will be explained. Field examples will •be shown to illustrate its application.Description of Instrument and of Operating TechniqueThe equipment (1) includes a low-frequency alternating current generator. The a.c. is supplied to a transmitter coil and generates a primary field which induces eddy currents in the ground, the intensity of which is proportional to the ground conductivity."

In the transformation of carbonaceous materials, such as peat, to coals of various grades, the changes are known to be both physical and chemical and the grade of coal finally produced depends on the stage to which alteration proceeded. Those changes, which are frequently spoken of as the results of metamorphism, are due to pressure with accompanying heat and, according to the amount of metamorphism to which the sediments with the included carbonaceous beds have been subjected, there is a gradation from peat to anthracite coal, and even to graphite. The improvement in the quality of the coal as a result of metamorphism is due to an increase of the carbon content of the coal and a corresponding loss of the volatile materials. This rise in the quality of the coal according to the degree of metamorphism is well illustrated by the coals of western Canada. In the Plains area, where the deformation and the attendant metamorphism of the sediments is comparatively small, the coals are lignites, whereas in the mountains, where deformation has been severe, the coals are semi-anthracites. Sub-bituminous and bituminous coals occur in the intervening areas. The same general relationship between the quality of the coal and the degree of metamorphism holds true for the Appalachian basin of the United States, where there is a progressive improvement in the quality of the coals from west to east, that is, from an area of comparatively slight metamorphism to an area of marked deformation in the Appalachian Mountain region. But while it is true that this relationship holds in a general way, it has been found that the improvement in the quality of the coal is not always uniformly progressive, and there may be local variations such that an area containing coal with a carbon content indicating low or medium metamorphism may be surrounded by areas in which the coals are of higher grade. These local variations in many cases can be explained, and they in no way detract from the general rule that, in a region exhibiting a progressive betterment in the quality of the coal from an area of low metamorphism to one of more marked deformation, the quality of the coal, i.e., the amount of fixed carbon in the coal, may be taken as an index of the degree of metamorphism of the coal as well as of the sediments in which it occurs, It has been pointed out (') that certain coals, such as cannels, are unreliable indicators of the varying degree of metamorphism because of the nature of the material from which such coal was derived. Such coals, however, are not known in western Canada and their behaviour need not here be discussed.

Introduction and Early History The British Canadian Mine is one of four operating properties of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, and is located in the town of Black Lake, Que., five miles southwest of Thetford Mines. In the early days of as1bestos mining, this .property was owned by a few small companies who later became part of the Asbestos Corporation. First .to commence mining operations on the property was the Coleraine Mining Company who, in 1885, began selling part of their large holdings in the area to various asbestos mining interests. Of these, the earliest active companies were Manhattan United Asbestos, the Glasgow and Montreal Asbestos Company, and the Anglo-Canadian, the last named later becoming the Standard and Dominion Asbestos Companies. Extraction of fibre was limited to what is now known as crude asbestos and the methods were primitive. Drilling was done .by hand and the ore was lifted by derricks operated by band winches. These were later replaced by horse power, but it was not until 1887 that the first steam-operated boom derricks were introduced, at the Anglo-Canadian mine. The ore was hand cobbled and the asbestos roughly classified and bagged. The waste rock, which by today's standards contained a considerable percentage of marketable fibre, was dumped near the pit. The first attempt to separate the asbestos from the host rock by mechanical means was made in 1888 by the G1asgow and Montreal Asbestos Company, then known as the Scottish-Canadian Asbestos Company, whose mill, erected in that year, was the world's first asbestos mill. Though the equipment was crude, the principles employed were the same as those used today with much larger units. The next steps were the use of rock drills, the adoption of steam rail transportation for moving mill rock, and conversion to the more flexible cable-derrick hoisting.

Introduction Since the discovery of a major oil pool at Leduc, Alberta, on February 13th, 1947, the long spell of 'oil drought' in Western Canada is now being turned into an oil and gas flood which requires immediate action to obtain the optimum economic benefits. The Woodbend, Section 9, and Okalta extensions of the Leduc field itself have been established; the Redwater pool, lying thirty-seven miles northeast of Edmonton, has been discovered and is being drilled up, and the Imperial Schoepp No. 1 or Golden Spike discovery holds promise of something phenomenal in view of the 500 feet of oil-saturated coral-reef porosity whose areal extent is not known. Imperial Stanolind Barrhead No. 1, northwest of Edmonton, revealed the presence of oil in the Madison, and just recently Gulf N.J. Ellis No. 1, some sixty miles southeast of Leduc, found commercial production in the Leduc D-2 discovery zone. In addition to these Paloeozoic discoveries, gas and oil reserves have also been established in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, which must be penetrated by all tests on the way through the geological column to the Devonian. If ever there appeared to be an index of 'things to come' in the oil industry, this is it. However, without these recent discoveries the picture in Western Canada does and always did, look very promising indeed. A brief survey of the geological setting in Western Canada is the object of this contribution.

THE operating advantages of the longwall retreating system of mining, as opposed to longwall advancing, have been well known for many years. Although retreat walls have been successfully worked in the past in some of the collieries of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, Picton and Cumberland areas, the adoption of longwaIl retreating as the general sys-tem of mining has not been attractive in the Sydney field, due to the time and expenditures required to drive roadways to the boundary. In addition. difficulties in maintaining effective ventilation on the faces, especially under conditions of low barometer, have made the operators in the field hesitant to adopt this as the general system of mining. The development of a machine capable of rapid entry drivage has made possible the driving of the necessary road ways to the boundary at a moderate cost, completely changing the picture and making a retreat system more attractive.

"The most challenging gold gravity separations occur when gangue has a high s.g., gold is fine, or a combination thereof This paper examines such separations, and evaluates the performance of a 3-in Knelson Concentrator at various rotation speeds, a 4-in SuperBowl, and a laboratory Mozley Multi-Gravity Separator (MGS). Synthetic feeds, primary cyclone underflows and flash flotation concentrates are tested.It is concluded that higher rotation speed are mostly useful for very fine (< 3 7 µm) gold recovery, with potential loss of recovery in the 37-212 µm range. This problem is traced to the collapse of the flowing film at higher Gs, which hinders the percolation of particles of intermediate size. Increasing fluidization water flow can alleviate this problem, but the recovery of very fine particle then drops. The MGS does not operate with the same principles, and can achieve good to very good recoveries of very fine to fine gold particles, but the unit has a high cost to capacity ratio, and there is no evidence yet that it can yield smeltable concentrate grade or a concentrate that can be upgraded with a shaking table.IntroductionThis presentation is a sequel to similar CMP presentations of the past eight years; all focused on practical aspects of gold recovery. The first hard rock application of the Knelson Concentrator (Laplante et al, 1990), studies of the grinding and classification behaviour of gold and other malleable metals (Banisi et al, 1991; Laplante et al, 1995), the development of a 3-in Knelson based methodology to study gold gravity circuits (Laplante and Shu, 1992), a comparison of the Knelson and Falcon (Laplante, Laplante et al, 1993), the presentation of a test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold, or GRG (Laplante et al, 1996), and the use of synthetic materials, in particular tungsten, to mimic gold (Laplante et al, 1995) were presented. A summary of many practical implication of the McGill research was presented in 1994 (Laplante). Whereas gold gravity recovery was less popular and largely jig-based (in North America) at the beginning of the eighties, many gold plants now incorporate a gravity circuit, and the Knelson Concentrator is the most commonly used unit."

This paper outlines the function of the Safety and Compensation Division of the Mining Association of British Columbia. After a general discussion of safety and the safety program now being followed in B.C., the author goes on to describe the wide-ranging aspects of compensation payments and company assessment rates. Special attention is also given to the problem of silicosis in mining operations. In appendices to the paper, the experience rating plan of the mining industry is compared to that recently adopted for the construction industry. Introduction The Mining Association of British Columbia consists of fifty-five member companies, including virtually all the producing mines as well as the larger exploration, contracting and development companies. On completion of an extensive study of safety and compensation in the mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia instituted a Safety and Compensation Division in 1954. The director of the Safety and Compensation Division reports to the Executive Committee of the Association. There are two main functions of this Division. Modern mineral exploration depends on multidisciplinary 3-dimensional integration of geological and geophysical data. Identification of the geological sources of geophysical anomalies requires knowledge of the physical properties fingerprint of rock types, formations and their alteration products. Understanding how and why rock physical properties vary within the Earth&apos;s subsurface ensures that appropriate geophysical exploration methods can be chosen, and allows for more efficient and effective surveys to be designed. Physical properties knowledge is integral to geophysical modeling - measured data or values estimated based on geological understanding are used to produce realistic forward calculations and to constrain inversion models. Mira Geoscience and the Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with industry and academia, are building a Rock Properties Database System (rpds.mirageoscience.com). It compiles the most valuable physical properties for mineral exploration (density, porosity, magnetic susceptibility and remanence, electrical resistivity and chargeability) linked with location and lithological metadata. A critical knowledge gap, addressed in this study, concerns the dependence of physical properties on alteration and mineralization processes. We report on the results of a collaborative University of British Columbia - Geoscience British Columbia project, ?Integrated Geological & Geophysical Porphyry Models: Adding Value to Geoscience BC Geophysical Data?. As part of the QUEST and QUEST-West geophysical initiatives, Geoscience BC focused detailed geophysical surveys on a suite of six known porphyry deposits: Mount Milligan, Endako, Huckleberry, Bell, Granisle, and Morrison. Physical properties for a set of 269 samples of characteristic host rocks and their altered equivalents were measured. The causes of physical properties variations were investigated through their correlations with ore and alteration mineralogy determined from thin-section observations and X-ray diffraction analyses. Physical properties of variably altered host-rocks and intrusive rocks vary significantly between different BC porphyry deposits. No specific unifying geophysical model exists that can be uniformly applied during exploration. Knowledge of local background geology and local physical properties variations is necessary as host-rocks and intrusive rock compositions vary depending on magmatic affinities, and alteration styles will vary reflecting host-rock compositions, crustal depth and influence of meteoric water. A district-scale exploration strategy requires location of intrusive bodies, which are commonly magnetic, resistive and low in density. Correlations should not be expected between density and magnetic susceptibility, because alteration may lead to magnetite destruction or to secondary magnetite development. Deposit-scale ground geophysics might image potassic alteration zones that can be magnetic in both alkalic and calcalkalic systems. Low magnetic susceptibilities, resistivities and densities might aid in locating the typically more porous phyllic and argillic zones. All geophysical data must be interpreted with background knowledge of local rock types and in light of the expected deposit model and associated magmatic and hydrothermal processes. The most effective means to building physical properties knowledge prior to geophysical investigation remains collecting rock physical properties measurements. The cost of rock properties data collection is low, relative to the overall costs of running a mineral exploration program, and can provide an important framework for design of geophysical surveys, survey method selection, geophysical modelling, and data interpretation.

It also shows the involvement of the plant in the siting of a heavy water production facility in Cape Breton. The paper concludes with an outline of the new installations which the Nova Scotia Power Commission has undertaken as an extension to the Seaboard Plant.

"High Pressure Grinding Roll (“HPGR”) technology is applied in a broadening range of minerals processing applications for relatively wet or moist materials. HPGR grinding of dry material or involving drying and air classification is more common, for example in cement manufacturing. A number of minerals processing plants are also operating with dry material, either due to process reasons, such as considerations of preceding or subsequent process stages, or as dictated by local conditions of arid areas and scarcity of water. The present world-wide expectation of decreasing availability of water supply urges us to look for alternatives that minimize water consumption.Recently established and envisaged future HPGR applications with dry ores have indicated that the technology of dry crushing and classification as practiced in cement and limestone grinding can be applied in minerals processing. Moreover, dry technology could very well be applied for generating a final fine product at sizes near or below 100 microns, as may be required for beneficiation by, for instance, flotation, magnetic separation or tank leaching.Dry HPGR grinding requires special attention in maintaining suitable process economics, when considering power input in grinding, drying and classification. In some cases, HPGR capacity and roll surface wear life may be negatively affected by a lack of moisture in the feed.This publication summarizes some of the features of, and experiences in dry HPGR applications. This includes design aspects of the classification system and discussion of the wear protection of the roll surfaces. The paper also includes examples of operational experiences of dry practices in minerals processing and cement plants."

"The Porcupine area is in northern Ontario at the intersection of N. Lat. 48° 30' and 81° W. Long. It is 125 miles due north of the Sudbury nickel range. Practically all the mineral production of this area has come from the townships of Tisdale, Deloro, Whitney, and Ogden, in order of importance. The accompanying map of the Porcupine area and its extensions to the east and west (Fig. 4) has been included to show what I consider to be an essential objective of this paper, a perspective for exploration.The discovery of gold ore in the Porcupine area at such an early date resulted from the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway and exploratory survey lines north into unexplored territory, for the early history of Porcupine is inextricably tied to the exploration along Niven's survey lines and the extension of the railway north from Cobalt to Nellie Lake. The following are the more significant events leading to the discovery of gold in Porcupine.1896-E. M. Burwash, employed by the Ontario Bureau of Mines, examined the country along Niven's base line and noted quartz veins that carried traces of gold. He was attached to Niven's survey party.1899-The late W. A. Parks reported on the geology of the portage route from Mattagami river to Night Hawk lake, for the Ontario Bureau of Mines. He noted the occurrence of gold in quartz veins and reported “I regard the region south of the trail to Porcupine lake as giving promise to the prospector"". He also was attached to Niven's survey party.1901-Charles Camsell, while prospecting for the Algoma Central railway, did some work on a vein occurrence carrying low gold on ground now known to be part of the Hollinger mine (3).1907- Extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to Nellie Lake.1909- Bannerman followed up Indian story about occurrence of coal, and found iron formation. He remained to prospect and found the gold-bearing vein of the Scottish Ontario property."

INTEREST in the mineral possibilities (gold, copper) of northern Quebec, north of the Quebec-Cochrane branch of the Canadian National railway, has centred for many years in the Chibougamau district (see Figure 1). Since 1934, however, promising gold discoveries in the Rose Lake-Florence River section, 115 miles southwest of Chibougamau lake, have widened the interest, and prospectors have examined other parts of the country between Chibougamau lake and Bell river and the surrounding districts. The object of this paper is to !resent an outline of the geology, and to describe the mineral deposits, o part of this region, or, more specifically, of the part embraced by the Opawica-Chibougamau and Waswanipi map-areas(l), which include the districts about Chibougamau lake and Rose lake-Florence river, where mineral deposits are now in course of development either by surface or underground work. Early discoveries, developments, and explorations in the Chibougamau district are well summarized in the report of the Chibougamau Commission, published in 1911(2). The Commission discredited previous optimistic accounts of mineral discoveries in the area, made initially in 1903, but at the same time they expressed the opinion that, from a geological standpoint, the district promised a reward to diligent and intelligent prospecting. Their general conclusion-that prospecting in the area was not then (1911) commercially advisable in view of its inaccessibility and other handicaps shifted interest from the district until, some years later, valuable discoveries were made in the Rouyn area, and aircraft widened the field of successful exploration. During the past ten years or so, considerable energy has been spent in promoting the development of the district. The net result has been the discovery of a number of prospects, the majority of which have been explored only by trenching and, in most cases, diamond drilling.

Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

"Corrosion rates of silicon brasses, highzinc yellow brass, low-zinc yellow brass, leadedtin bronze and silicon bronzes in both permanent-mold and sand-cast conditions were determined in soft water of pH 3, 5 and 8, and hard water of pH 8 at 70°C by electrochemical polarization technique. The alloys in permanent- mold condition showed greater corrosion resistance than sand-cast condition. Corrosion rates obtained from weight loss measurements showed no observable trend of a difference between permanent-mold and sand-cast alloys.The corrosion rates decreased with increasing pH of the medium. Silicon bronze and silicon brass showed high corrosion resistance while leaded-tin bronze showed the least resistance. Addition of small amounts of aluminum improved the corrosion resistance of silicon bronzes and silicon brasses. Alloys in permanent- mold condition showed greater resistance to dezincification than sand-cast alloys when average pit depth parameter is considered."

Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.

The In order to mine safely with reasonable cost, it is necessary to research the fracture characters of backfill and its matches with rock mass. Four kinds backfill with cement-tailing ratio of 0.250, 0.125, 0.100 and 0.083 respectively were tested, and basing on stress-strain curves tested, the deformation characters and fracture laws as well as the damage constitutive equations investigated with damage mechanics whose calculating results are coincided with experiment results well were proposed. The results of damage analysis show that there have different damage characters in different backfill, e. g. the lower the ratio of cement to tailings the lower the damage values when stresses reach to peak value; the lower the content of cement the more rapid in damage and the more abrupt in breakage process. In addition, using catastrophe theory, an energy model was proposed for backfill and rock mass acted each other in mechanics, and the unstable condition of the system was obtained. Research results show that the higher is the stiffness of rock mass the more stable the system, and the lower is the ratio of cement to tailings, the more unstable the system will be. Further more, according to the catastrophe model proposed, the reasonable matches between backfill and rock mass were researched, and a calculation formula that designs reasonable strength of backfill during mining was put forward. It has been proved by practice that the model and theory researched in this paper can guide filling design in mining.
