Until relatively recent times, virtually all gold was recovered by gravity and/ or amalgamation methods. Although such techniques are very effective on coarse gold, they become increasingly less useful for finer grains especially when the gold is partly enclosed in rock matrix. Throughout the nineteenth century a number of bonanza gold fields were found in the United States, South Africa, Australia and Canada. In every case the abundant supply of gold nuggets and coarse alluvial gold soon gave way to hard rock mining with its inevitable losses of fine gold in the stamp mill tailings. Continuing efforts to develop new technologies capable of dissolving gold from finely ground ore were eventually successful first with chlorination (the Plattner process) and subsequently with cyanidation. Even before the nineteenth century, however, European chemists such as Scheele and Berthollet were aware that gold could be readily dissolved in an excess of free cyanide(1). As early as 1840, a patent was issued to the Elkington brothers for the dissolution of pure gold in cyanide solution and its subsequent plating onto various metals, with or without an applied electrical current. In 1846, Elsner showed that oxygen was also required to solubilize gold or silver in cyanide media(1). Despite the fact that much work was done on the reaction of cyanide solutions with gold, a viable leaching process for gold ores did not quickly emerge although cyanide solutions were used to enhance amalgamation from the 1860s onward. Major problems were associated with the use of concentrated cyanide solutions; the costs of cyanide were excessive and it was difficult to recover gold from the concentrated media.

"IntroductionWITH THE DISCOVERY of natural radioactivity at the end of the 19th century, and the design of equipment for the detection of this phenomenon, radioactivity surveys bad their inception. Early in the 20th century it was found that almost all rocks are radioactive to a certain degree. This radioactivity is due to the nuclear disintegration of six naturally radioactive elements: potassium, thorium, uranium, rubidium, samarium, and lutecium.The radioactivity of these elements manifests itself by the emission of some concentration of alpha, beta, and gamma 'rays'. Of these, the alpha and beta 'rays' are, respectively, helium atoms and electrons, while the gamma 'rays' are short wave length x-rays generated in the nuclear disintegration by the transformation of mass into energy.The alpha and beta rays, being particles of matter, are stopped ve• easily by material barriers, but gamma rays are extremely penetrating and they will pass through a foot or more of rock or several inches of lead.The radioactivity may be detected by the causing of ionization by the radiation. The radiation detectors may be divided into four classes: ionization chambers, proportion al counters, and Geiger counters, all of which use gas for ionization, and scintillation counters, in which a solid is ionized. The basic principle of all these detectors is the same; the difference lies in the method used to measure the degree of ionization produced by the rays. Currently, the scintillation counter is displacing, the other instruments in radioactivity surveying."

"Uranium and thorium mineralization occurs at several localities in eastern Quebec along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The main occurrences are near Sept-Iles, Baie Johan Beetz, Romaine and St-Augustin river. Mineralization occurs mainly as disseminated uraninite, uranothorite, uranothorianite, monazite and minor zircon and allanite. Yellow to orange oxidation products are observed along fracture planes of the uranium-bearing deposits to a depth of a few feet. Magnetite, biotite and smoky quartz have a distinct tendency to accompany the radioactive minerals. The host rocks include white to pink pegmatite, pink granite and also, in the case of the Romaine and St-Augustin River occurrences, cream to grey plagioclase-rich, well foliated paragneiss and migmatite. Radioactivity near secondary structures, such as fractures and joint planes, indicates some reconstitution of radioactive minerals.The North Shore of Quebec is the northeast extension of the Grenville sub-province. It is also a uranium-thorium metallogenic province."

A common problem in Gas Treatment Centers (GTC) from primary aluminium smelters is the temperature of the gas to be treated : above a threshold, filtering media are irreversibly damaged. The traditional way of dealing with high gas temperature is to dilute with fresh air, which implies over sizing - and therefore higher cost for - the GTC in order to have the capacity to treat this dilution air without compromising on pot suction. A system was developed which decreases gas temperature without having to use dilution air. This system is based on water pulverization in gas collectors. The water vaporization leads to a temperature decrease of the gas. A pilot system was trialed in our R&D unit. Satisfactory results led to the development of an industrial system based on Envirocare equipment (partnership), which was trialed in our production plant in Tomago (NSW, Australia). This patented system was then generalized in this plant, which is now using it with success during austral summer.

Monte ? Carlo simulation is often used to assess the risks associated with uncertain variables in mining operations. The success of Monte-Carlo simulations depends upon reproducing the dependencies among variables to some extent. However, some variables may exhibit different dependency patterns. In these cases, classical techniques for dependency quantification cannot capture dependencies. As an alternative, the copulas allow modeling nonlinear dependencies. Furthermore, any choice of marginal distributions can be used. Especially, for the data, which is sensitive to extreme case such as financial crisis, the copulas arise as a means to reproduce the correlations among variables. In this paper, the copulas are introduced to mining practitioners using Monte-Carlo simulations for risk assessment. Then, a case study is given to show the superiority of the copulas over classical techniques using ModelRisk Software. In conclusion, it was observed that the copulas enhance the quality of Monte-Carlo simulations by capturing variable dependencies.

The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and model based 3-D control of work machines have increased a lot in new road construction in Finland as well as in other Nordic Countries. Up today, much less attention has been paid into the development of maintenance and rehabilitation processes. As a part of a large research and development program RYM PRE Infra FIN BIM in Finland, a focused research project of the BIM with experiments in total five (5) pilot projects has been performed. A main idea of the new BIM based process has been to utilize mobile laser scanning method for initial data acquirement, the use of novel 3-D analyze and modelling methods for point cloud processing, the use of new type optimization method for the planning of geometric and structural improvements needed for the existing uneven road surfaces, and further, through the creation of 3-D machine control models apply the newest 3- D machine control systems for continuous 3-D control of practical construction work using milling machine and asphalt paver. Finally, an evaluation is made between the new process model and the traditional way of working.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is located in one of the most remote and forbidding places in the world, 220 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle and on the bed of a vast northern lake, Lac de Gras. A single road, built out of ice and crossing frozen lakes, connects the mine with other operations and Yellowknife, the capital of the Canada's Northwest Territories. Diamonds were first discovered in the Lac de Gras region in the early 1990s, and construction of the Diavik Diamond Mine was completed in 2003. Diavik currently mines three kimberlite pipes. Open pit mining has now concluded and all three pipes are mined using underground mining methods. In early 2010, Diavik began mining and processing initial ore from its new underground mine; underground mining operations are expected to continue beyond 2020. The initial mine ventilation system was an exhausting (pull) system with fresh air supplied by a fresh air raise and a main ramp. Return air was exhausted via two raises and a secondary ramp. The system had a total flow capacity approximating 401-411 m3/s. With planned increased production and with changes in mining method, it has been proposed to change the mine ventilation system to a positive (forcing) ventilation system in order to meet projected increases in flow requirements of 566-708 m3/s. Extensive engineering work was developed in order to successfully achieve the changes in system configuration. In the proposed configuration, the main ramp is in an exhaust configuration and exhaust raises are converted to fresh air raise. A number of system implementation options were investigated and phased plans for system execution have been developed. The proposed changes to the ventilation system are substantial and involve extensive construction work. Work was commenced in 2011, each planned phase has been successfully completed to date, and system changes continue today in order to achieve complete system flow reversal and increased flow distribution. This paper details the design of the modified ventilation system and commissioning work which will allow the mine to meet its future production targets.

Globalization and the search for new ore deposits inevitably lead to investment in foreign markets. Investors need to be aware of the effect of their venture on regional, social and economic issues when they invest. Decades of detailed statistics from various sources can be integrated and analyzed to predict the social-economic impact of investment, thereby mitigating risk. To this end, the correlation among variables such as foreign direct investment into mining (FDIM), reserves, and socio-economic indexes is examined. The investigation focuses on South America from 1992 to 2000. Throughout the past decade, South America has benefited from capital investment from more developed countries. This huge investment by the mining industry has impacted the South American economies and can be measured directly using the FDIM. Other economic variables investigated include mining gross domestic product, direct employment, and human development indexes. The correlation is based on data compiled from the World Bank, international risk assessment agencies, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the information agencies of various South American countries. Initial analysis of the economic data suggests various expected outcomes. For example, foreign investors may disregard a measured, highly negative country risk in deference to the quality of its mineral resources. It is important to note that the standard measures of country risk published by investment analysts are not industry or investor-specific. In the case of the investor, the level of accepted risk is based on their managed investment portfolio. It is noted that arguments for level-playing fields may be the antithesis of globalization. The discovery and exploitation of ore bodies in a globalized environment necessitates the development of economic measures that standardize mining-specific risk variables and trends. The latest published information on the security of mineral investments in South America is investigated by integrating databases of economic, geologic, production, human indexes, and risk ranking.

The gold district of northwestern Quebec, though it has attracted such widespread attention during the past year, is still in the prospect stage throughout, and one must preface any remarks about it with the plain statement that its capacity to produce gold commercially is still subject to proof. However, this proof may be forthcoming any day, and from widely separated localities. Consequently it is of interest to note some of the features of the region and of the prospects now being developed. First I shall note the relation of this mining development to the province of Quebec and to the Dominion; then will follow a brief resume of the known geological facts; and finally I shall describe briefly some of the more advanced prospects developed during the past twelve-month. Those that have followed closely the fortunes of the new gold-field will find little that is new in what follows, but it may serve a useful purpose for others by bringing together scattered items of information and presenting them as a whole. GOLD MINING AND AGRICULTURE First let us consider the gold belt in its relation to the province of Quebec. Apart from the world-renowned asbestos camp south of the St. Lawrence, it is the only mineral development of major importance the province has experienced. It is the first important development in the province's vast area of Precambrian rocks, most of which remains as yet totally unexplored and unprospected. The relative importance of this first mining camp in northern Quebec cannot as yet be gauged, but it is bound to stimulate an active interest in the other mineral-bearing areas now known to exist, and in the vast unexplored spaces.

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. Certain areas are sheared and chloritized to a degree that makes identification difficult. The rocks are carbonatized throughout; the most persistent carbonate veins parallel the upper contact. "In 2012 diesel engine exhaust (DEE) was classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is one of the most common workplace carcinogens internationally. We estimate that approximately 2.4% of lung cancers (n=560) and a suspected 2.7% of bladder cancers (n=200) are attributable to occupational exposure to DEE annually in Canada. High levels of exposure to DEE in mining results in a disproportionate number of cancers in this sector (approximately 220 lung and 20 suspected bladder cancers annually). These could be prevented by reducing the number of workers exposed and level of exposure. KEYWORDS Bladder cancer, Diesel engine exhaust, Economic burden, Lung cancer, Mining, Occupational cancer, Prevention, Regulation INTRODUCTION Diesel engine exhaust is a complex mixture of gases and particulates containing known and suspected carcinogens such as benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals. Approximately 900,000 Canadians are exposed to diesel engine exhaust at work, making it the most prevalent occupational lung carcinogen in Canada (CAREX Canada). Diesel engine exhaust is recognized as one of the most common workplace carcinogens in the world, but its classification as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was relatively recent. In 2012, after decades of mounting evidence, diesel engine exhaust was upgraded from a probable (IARC Group 2A) to a definite human carcinogen (IARC Group 1) (IARC, 2014). The IARC evaluation was based on strong evidence in humans for an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as strong evidence in animal studies. The key human evidence considered by IARC was from epidemiologic studies of workers in truck transportation, rail transportation, and mining industries, where the use of diesel engines is widespread. These studies provided strong sufficient evidence for an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as limited evidence for bladder cancer. The human studies used particulate matter, generally measured as elemental carbon (EC) or total carbon, as a surrogate for diesel engine exhaust to assess the risk associated with level of exposure. The animal studies reviewed by IARC showed sufficient evidence for cancer with exposure to whole diesel exhaust and the particulate matter fraction of diesel exhaust, but not for the gas phase components."

"The Atlantic Coal Institute illustrates the potential for high technology employment in Maritime Canada, by using local talent and the latest equipment to address a national market. Since I983, contract research for industry and government has generated 31 man-years of high-tech employment, added $2.3 million to the local economy and contributed new technology for Canadian coal. Industry now has access to new procedures for coal minerals analysis, pyrolysis, and geochemistry applied to industrial problems of exploration, beneficiation, conversion and combustion.Research at the Institute is market-driven, based on cost recoveries from contracts. The financial performance to date exceeds that of similar industrial research institutes in major cities and demonstrates that small isolated laboratories are cost-effective. Economic renewal of Canada's resource industries will require increased R&D which in turn can be a source of local employment and pride. Small research teams are more efficient but require an enlightened policy of contracting-out by big business and big government."

Flotation separation is expected to be related to the degree of dispersion of the pulp. For instance, highly aggregated systems may show reduced selectivity, reduced entrainment and increased flotation rate. In an attempt to test the impact of aggregation on flotation, we have taken advantage of the effect of Mg ions. Using combinations of Mg2+ and pH gave a wide variation in aggregation of several Cu-Zn ores (measured by settling rate) and corresponding flotation response was determined by batch tests. The trials were conducted on-site at Louvicourt and Agnico-Eagle. In a majority of cases a similar trend in aggregation and flotation selectivity (grade at given recovery) was observed. At Louvicourt, improved selectivity with increasing aggregation at pH 10.5 was found. At Agnico-Eagle, an analogous association between aggregation and selectivity was observed at pH 11.5. It is suggested that aggregation influences particle entrainment, the increased effective particle size reducing gangue recovery and hence improving selectivity.

IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that, in celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metalturgy chose our Province of British Columbia as its locale in this, our own Centennial year. I am sure your organization is justifiably proud of its achievements and growth over the period of its sixty years, and we, for our part, are justifiably proud of our growth over our first one hundred years. With your kind indulgence I pro-pose to talk to you today about our industrial growth, or, to put it an-other way, to highlight, historically, our progress in industrial development over the past one hundred years, and to take the liberty of speculating on what we may reasonably look forward to over the next few years. I am sure, Mr. Chairman, that some may have questioned the appropriateness of a talk on the industrial development of British Columbia to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, strangely enough, we in British Columbia owe our origin, constitution-ally and industrially, to the mining industry.

"ON NOVEMBER 15th, 1950, the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys announced the discovery of vermiculite near Perth, Ontario. The announcement followed nearly a month of study to determine so far as possible the potentialities of the deposit and quality of the material from surface indications. The mineral was identified by the writer in the field among samples submitted by Mr. Arthur Powers of Stanleyville or, September 22nd, 1950. Within a week of the announcement, mining rights to properties covering a major portion of the deposit had been acquired by commercial interests.Hitherto, Canada has had to import her entire requirements of vermiculite. Prospects of .a domestic supply gave promise of considerable benefit to many industries, particularly the building industry, and to the consumer public. Should the deposit •prove large enough there was also the possibility of exporting to centres in the United States.Field and laboratory studies were continued at the Mines Branch during the winter of 1950-51 as opportunity occurred. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of these •preliminary investigations, to attempt to present the Stanleyville occurrence in its proper perspective with regard to similar occurrences elsewhere, and to review the salient features of the vermiculite industry.Properties and UsesVermiculite is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. In appearance it resembles mica, having the same micaceous cleavage, but it differs from that mineral in being very soft, pliable, and inelastic. Colours range from black through dark olive-green and brown to almost colourless."

"In South Africa most of the large gold mines operate between 1500m and 4500m below surface where reef is accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration. Due to the complexity of the ventilation networks used to ventilate these mines and the potential disastrous consequences associated with underground fires, it is of utmost importance that these mines are managed in such a way that underground fires are prevented. However, if they do occur the fires are managed to firstly prevent the loss of life and secondly protect the infrastructure and viability of the mine. The aim of this paper will be to: • Discuss current SA mining legislation regarding underground fire prevention and control. • Examine these fires from a risk management perspective by means of a bowtie assessment. • List and discuss the major Threats and Consequences as determined by the bowtie assessment. • Discuss the various prevention and consequence controls for deep level underground fires. • Examine how to effectively run an emergency control room. From this, a practical way of designing, implementing and managing an underground fire management system is explored. Lastly, the paper identifies new technology and ways of thinking and how these can be used to combat underground fires. INTRODUCTION The orebodies of South African gold mines are generally narrow tabular structures that vary in thickness between 0.8m and 1.2m with an inclination of between 200 and 700. This, coupled with depths of between 1500m and 4500m, as well as the unpredictable geology, creates unique challenges and significantly impacts on mine designs and mining methods. In general, gold bearing reefs are accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration (Figure 1). Mining is very labour intensive with very limited mechanisation opportunities and this increases the risk to human life if an underground fire occurs. On 16 September 1986, one of the worst mining disasters in SA mining history took place when 177 mineworkers were killed at Kinross Mine. An acetylene tank sparked flames that swept through the mining tunnel igniting plastic covering on the wiring and the flames also set fire to polyurethane foam. The burning plastic combined with polyurethane and the toxic fumes that filled the shafts caused the miners death. This incident was a stark reminder of the serious consequence that underground fires can have on human life as well as the crippling financial and asset impact for the mining companies. Over the past thirty years, the SA mining industry reduced the number of mine fires significantly by replacing normal timber support with fire retardant treated timber, alternative support systems such as backfill and elongate support and many other fire prevention initiatives. Although the number of fire incidents and number of fatalities due to fires does not show a direct correlation because of various factors, the controls put in place against fires has had an impact on the number of fire and explosion fatalities (Figure 2)."

"In this article, with the help of the X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), a modern test method, all the characteristics of the chlorite,and adsorption collector A6 on the surface of chlorite have been studied. There exist abundant carboxylic C-O and C=O structures in the Carbon XPS atlas with strong adhesive ability after the reaction between new collector A6 and chlorite, which indicates that the ring structure and ether-base functional groups can strengthen the reaction between collector A6 molecule and chlorite surface. The results of XPS analysis indicate that the photoelectron spectroscopy peaks of Mg2p and Al2p moved towards low energy after collector A6 absorbed on chlorite surface, which indicates that chemical bonding through electron cloud transfer happened between collector A6 and Mg, Al ions of chlorite surface. The chemical reaction promoted the adsorption of A6 on chlorite surface and eventually improved the ability of A6 to float and collect chlorite.INTRODUCTIONThere are a large amount of iron-bearing silicate minerals such as chlorite in different types of gangue minerals in iron ore from different areas besides quartz (Yingyong et al, 2012; Qiang et al, 2009). There always exist Mg2+, Al3+ Fe3+ and other metallic ions due the isomorphic replacement among the irons of this kind of minerals. The dissolution often occurs on the surface of minerals with abundant metallic ions during grinding process, and some ions are exposed on the surface, such as Mg2+, Fe3+, Al3+, Si4+, which can increase the surface electrical behaviour of iron-bearing silicate minerals (Wanzhong & Chuanyao, 2002; Yuping et al., 2007), making it easy for the surface to react preferentially with the depressants such as causticizing starch which making it impossible for the surface to reach with conventional anionic fatty acid collector (Mowla et al, 2008). Thus, the beneficiation efficiency is dramatically decreased and the improvement of concentrate grade becomes very difficult. The conventional aliphatic acid collector has some defects such as poor selectivity, poor low temperature resistance, sensitive to water hardness, etc. Thus, the addition of synergist (Liu, & Yu, 2015) or other compound reagents (Zhou et al, 2015) can promote the adsorption of reagents to mineral surface, and improve the collecting capacity and selectivity of aliphatic acid collector to minerals. The addition of polar group to nonpolar group in aliphatic acid can improve the water solubility, dispensability and hard water resistance (Tian et al, 2013). The nitrogen atoms in amid ate aliphatic acid collector can adsorb on mineral surface by itself and supply coordinate electron which can form chelating keys to improve the collecting capacity of collector. There exist coordinate electron in oxygen atoms of ether acid collector, which, along with the oxygen on carboxyl compose chelate with metal (Luo et al, 2015). There are also exist some opinions that the ether acid can arrange into similar crown ether structure which can absorb on mineral surface. A new alicyclic unsaturated ether acid compounds collector A6 is adopted in this paper, the structural formula is listed in Figure 1. The A6 has a strong collecting ability to chlorite with strong water solubility and low temperature resistance."

"The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. Attention is less frequently placed on the removal of energy from these reactors and how this might limit performance.The pressure leaching of sulphides releases a significant amount of heat. "The combination of a predictive reliability assessment model and discrete-event simulation can be an effective methodology to study the impact of equipment failures on the capacity of production systems in mines. In our case, a predictive reliability assessment model using genetic algorithms is combined with a discrete-event simulation model to analyze mine equipment systems.Discrete-event simulation involves modelling of real-life systems based on variables and events that occur or change at distinct points in time. The Simul8 simulation software, by Visual Thinking, is used in this research. It is a two-dimensional (2D), discrete-event simulation/ animation software tool for creating realistic depictions of manufacturing and materials handling systems.The simulation model developed for the purpose of this research represents a typical two-level, sub-level stoping section of an underground mine in the Sudbury region in Ontario, Canada. This 2D model was created to assess the impact of equipment failures to a mine’s production throughput. In more detail, using mean time between failures (MTBF) data of scooptrams derived from a reliability assessment model based on genetic algorithms, LHD failures are incorporated into the simulation model. These failures cause production interruptions to the development cycle and consequently loss of hauling capacity.Another purpose of this research work is to demonstrate how low-cost simulation tools such as Simul8 can be successfully applied to model underground hard rock mining operations. "The iron ore mines in the Lorraine region of north-eastern France cover a surface area of approximately 3,900 km2 and involve more than 150 cities. A total extraction method was usually used during exploitation, but this technique was sometimes replaced by the room and abandoned pillar technique when it was necessary to protect surface buildings and infrastructure. Rooms and abandoned pillars were initially designed to ensure long-term mine stability. However, this aim was not always reached and numerous collapses occurred in the Lorraine iron basin, either during production or several years after closure. Several subsidence events were identified during a period of one century; the most recent event occurred in 2012. Two groups of events were identified. The first group represents events characterized by sudden surface movement, and the second group includes event characterized by progressive subsidence.Numerous studies conducted during the last decade helped improve our understanding the origin mechanism of spontaneous or progressive (slow) events. These studies led to identifying long-term potentially unstable underground zones (hazard zones), particularly deep zones located under buildings and infrastructure. The latest are currently monitored by microseismic networks. A similar high requirement level is needed for unstable zones without taking into account the kinetics of the subsidence, which is very important for safety. Thus, GEODERIS initiated this study, primarily to acquire a better understanding of the kinetics of the progressive events group and identify the main parameters that could explain why some pillars zones developed a maximum amplitude subsidence on surface within a few hours or days, while it took several weeks to months for others. In practice, the results of this study will facilitate adapting the requirement level of microseismic monitoring system to the kinetics of pillar collapse.To retrieve the real kinetics for each event, historical and sparse documentation was used. Firstly, archives research was conducted, especially testimonies and newspaper articles published during the events. This work helped to gather useful information that sometimes contained a precise description of subsidence duration. The archives research helped to classify some progressive events according to the subsidence kinetics. Secondly, a diagnostic of geotechnical and geomechanical parameters of historic events was realized, combined with a cross analysis of the data. The analysis took into account dimensions of underground workings (e.g., pillar lengths, widths, heights, introduction of a “pillar shape factor”, and stress amount). An original expression was highlighted to connect the pillar geometry to the stress state. The kinetics expression was calibrated to classify the historic events taken into account according to the kinetics of movements. The kinetic criterion was applied to predict subsidence kinetics for the potential unstable zones currently monitored by a microseismic system."
