The choice of fan type (axial flow, centrifugal or mixed flow) most suited for a mine ventilation application depends on a number of technical and economic factors. For each project, the relative importance of these factors will vary. It is worthwhile to carry out an assessment on a case by case basis. The paper, by discussing a number of technical and economic factors and their interactions, will provide the ventilation official a methodology to easily and methodically undertake such an assessment.

The Royal Canadian Mint has implemented significant process additions since 2005. Installation of a whole new highly automated silver refining circuit has allowed recovery of physical silver from gold and silver dorés . To complement this change, a small Top Blown Rotary Converter has been in operation. On the gold refining side, a new hydrometallurgical process to recover precious metals from Miller Chlorination slag has been developed. Finally, new systems have been put in place to improve treatment of waste water, wet and dry fume and dust.

Anode effects are a phenomenon of the aluminium electrolysis process which produce potent greenhouse gases called PFCs (CF4, C2F6). With concerns surrounding global warming, and increasing regulation of GHG emissions, anode effects have become a significant sustainability issue for aluminium producers. In modem smelters, sophisticated computer control and automated alumina feeding systems allow for very tight control of the alumina concentration in the electrolyte and thus very low anode effect frequencies. Older smelters, however, do not have these systems and must either invest heavily to obtain them, or find other, innovative ways to reduce anode effect frequency. This paper will present the integrated approach to anode effect reduction used in the Vertical Stud Soderberg (VSS) potlines at Kitimat Works. Through an innovative combination of simplified signal analysis, modified alumina feed control logic, anode effect prediction, and anode effect prevention using a pager based communication system, Kitimat W arks has been able to make significant reductions to its anode effect frequency.

Copper Mountain is the third largest copper mine in British Columbia, and is now producing close to 20 million pounds of copper per year, with which is recovered also 4,000 ounces of gold and. 13,800 ounces of silver. After a long and checkered career, during which the ownership and management changed several times, this deposit finally came into the possession of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company in 1923. It was not, however, until the end of 1925 that the mine, under the management of Charles Bocking and C. H. Smith, was successfully placed on a basis of profitable production. It is a low-grade deposit of the contact-metamorphic type, with refractory ores consisting of chalcopyrite and bornite in a gangue of altered andesitic and basaltic breccia. The ore is concentrated to a product carrying over 30 percent copper, which is smelted in Tacoma. The deposit is 12 miles south of the town of Princeton, which is on the Kettle Valley railway, 150 miles east of Vancouver and 40 miles north of the International Boundary line. Princeton is served also by a branch of the Great Northern railway, which leads clown the Similkameen, Okanagan, and Columbia valleys. Copper Mountain mine and camp are connected to Princeton by a good mo tor road extending up Wolf Creek valley, while the haulage level of the mine, which emerges on the steep side of the Similkameen valley 1,000 feet below the camp, is connected with Princeton by a spur of the Kettle Valley railway leading up the Similkameen canyon and passing en route through Allenby, where the concentrator is situated.

Inco Limited, Ontario Division is currently in the process of decommissioning the Whistle Mine site located near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The most significant component of site decommissioning involved relocating approximately 6.4 million tonnes of acid-generating waste rock to the open pit from two adjacent stockpiles. An engineered cover system was designed for the backfilled pit to reduce the long-term production of acid rock drainage. Geochemical modelling was conducted to assess the effectiveness of various cover options on the longterm water quality of the backfilled pit. Results obtained from performance monitoring of cover system field trials at the site and estimated full-scale construction costs were used to select an appropriate material for the cover system barrier layer. The two-dimensional soil-atmosphere model VADOSE/W was used to develop a calibrated model of covered waste rock based on field data obtained from the cover trials, which was subsequently used to predict net percolation and oxygen ingress through various cover system alternatives for site-specific climate conditions. Erosion and landform evolution numerical modelling was completed to assist in designing the runoff management system and final landform for the pit cover system. The potential impact of various physical, chemical and biological processes on the sustainable performance of the pit cover system was also considered in the design process. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction of the backfilled pit cover system.

In conventional continuous hot rolling processes, metals are usually reheated to a temperature such that the workpiece will maintain appropriate hot working characteristics as it proceeds through the rolling mill, assuming that the temperature is continually decreasing. Metallurgically, reheating will reduce micro-segregation in the as-cast material, may increase the as-cast grain size and will affect any second phase particles present in the as-cast structure. All these changes can affect the hot working characteristics, and the final as-hot rolled microstructure. In order to study the effect of reheating on AZ31 magnesium alloy, a plate sample was cast in a water cooled copper mould and a series of compression tests was performed at a temperature of 350 °C, strain rate 0.01 5-1, and strains from 0.2 to 1.0, after different reheating schedules. It was found that there is no significant difference in flow behavior between the as-cast sample and all but one of the reheated ones. The reheat treatment of the 'anomalous' sample was a two stage heat treatment; it was first reheated to 450 °C, cooled to room temperature, then reheated to 350 °C. The effect on the flow curve was to increase the flow stress. This result may be related to changes in second phase particle characteristics.

The authors provide a state-of-technology review based on Hatch’s years of testing, design and commissioning experience with high-temperature units (fluid bed and spray roasters), plus the recent efforts in the area of low-temperature HCl regeneration.

"In 1960, with the opening of the Chisel Lake mine near Snow Lake, Manitoba, the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, commenced a new phase in their mining operation -that of bringing ore to Flin Flon over 100 miles of railroad.The schedule of operations required to accomplish this, together with an outline of some of the problems of handling ore at 40° and 50,0 below zero, are discussed. The facilities required to thaw and unload from twenty to fifty cars per working day are also described."

"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . T HE production of coal in Canada was slightly higher in 1964 than in the immediate past, and the major users continue to be the electric utility and metallurgical industries. There are continuing trends toward the increased use of cokes and chars in various metallurgical applications. Geological Research During 1964, the coal drilling program of the Research Council of Alberta (RCA) was concentrated in the extreme south of the Province (notably in the Milk River area and the region immediately to the northeast of this area). Field work commenced on June 1 and was completed at the end of September, by which time a total of 376 holes, aggregating some 48,500 ft., were drilled in 132 townships. Although no new major coal occurrences were intersected, the pro-gram yielded useful data for defining the extent of the known coal deposits in the area. Mine reconciliation is seen, for many, as a test of the quality of model estimates, while in fact it should be seen as a powerful tool for detecting and correcting problems in each step of mining operations, from resource estimation to metal production. Adequate reconciliation practices allow a more efficient control of the mining processes; however, its results can be illusory unless all parties involved have been in compliance with the principles of sampling correctness. This paper presents a new, segmented reconciliation matrix, which is based on the Theory of Sampling (TOS), developed to monitor gold operations and reserve estimation.

Anglo American has used the extractant M 5640 in all the Divisions, which is an aldoxime modified with TXIB formulation, except in Los Bronces, where an aldoxime modified with tridecanol (TDA) formulation is used. It is a well-known fact that the aldoxime degrades while the modifier does not. With time the aldoxime/modifier ratio decreases significantly depending on the operating conditions of each plant. In order to evaluate the effect of this increasing modifier content in the organic of the plant, especially in the organic losses, a complete metallurgical test work program was started at laboratory and pilot plant scale. Results showed that the addition of aldoxime without modifier does not affect the chemical performance of the organic phase, but there is a significant decrease in the viscosity and density of the organic phase. Based on the results obtained in the metallurgical program, it was decided to run plant scale tests at both SX plants, Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. In these tests, instead of adding the usual formulation of aldoxime modified with TXIB to maintain the organic inventory, CuPRO MEX™ 3406 which is an aldoxime without modifier is going to be added until the original aldoxime/modifier ratio is reached. The plant tests started in April 2013 at Mantos Blancos and in June 2013 at Mantoverde and will last 18 months. The results obtained at the laboratory and pilot plant scale, together with the preliminary plant test results, are discussed in this paper.

The Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of southwestern Newfoundland merit investigation because of petroleum, salt and gypsum possibilities and indications of base metallization along the equivalent of the Horton-Windsor con-tact. In this paper, Lower Mississippian (Anguille) strata are divided into three formations: (1) the Cape John below, (2) the Snakes Bight and (3) the Seacliffs. A correlation between these formations and the Craignish, Strathlorne and Ainslie formations of the Horton group? in western Cape Breton Island is suggested. The criteria for the Anguille subdivision are essentially lithological, but preliminary study of included spore assemblages suggests more precise interformational correlations between Anguille and Horton sequences. The re-measured lower portion of the type section of the Codroy group is presented to define more clearly the stratigraphic position of numerous gypsum and limestone beds. It is well known that underground miners are exposed to one of the most dangerous working environments on earth. As mine delve deeper, the geological factor, mine position and climate condition as well as heat generation from mining machine give rise to the mine operating temperature. This, in turn, has an adverse effect on the environment and thus leads to higher operating costs. Careful estimation and design of air flow rate, spray system, cooling load and additional ventilation auxiliary equipment are of importance to ensure safety, comfort and productivity whilst maintaining low operating cost. A computational fluid dynamics simulation approach is employed to examine underground mine ventilation in a 36 m cul-de-sac of tunnel of coal mine. The model predictions in the turbulent range were validated by comparison with published data. Different turbulence models were tested to select one that yields adequate accuracy and is computationally efficient. Effects of the following parameters are evaluated: tunnel geometry, air flow rate and inlet air temperature. The objective of the simulation is to arrive at an optimal strategy for ventilation and thermal comfort at low cost.

Lightweight, high-pressure cylinders for compressed hydrogen storage are essential components for fuel cell vehicles. Storage volume and mass are two key considerations. Current on-board hydrogen storage systems are based on a maximum pressure of 350 bar. While 350 bar systems are excellent solutions for many applications, some situations require higher storage densities due to space restrictions. As a result, significant research and development work has been expended by cylinder manufacturers, systems providers, testing agencies and automotive manufacturers to develop 700 bar systems with reduced storage volumes. Dynetek Industries Ltd. has proactively developed several 700 bar storage cylinders based on a seamless aluminum liner over wrapped with a carbon fiber composite. This paper presents the challenges and processes involved in the design, testing and certification for Dynetek Industries Ltd. 700 bar cylinders. This paper also provides reasoning for further volume and mass optimization of compressed hydrogen cylinders through the establishment of realistic cylinder usage parameters in standards. In particular, the overly conservative fill life requirement for cylinders is examined.

Underground mining in Sweden is today characterized by mechanization and automation, owing to the rising cost of labour. Drilling in drifts and tunnels is still essentially done with jackleg drills, but rigs wh1ch make it possible for one man to operate two or more drills are now frequently used. Large jumbos for longhole drilling, with two drills operated by one man, are used, especially in sub-level caving. A special drill-rig for drilling through overburden and blasting without removing the overburden has been successfully used in canals and also in ports, where blasting is per-formed under water. The increased use of mining methods based upon long blastholes is a result of the development of equipment for drilling long straight holes. The most common mining method in Sweden is sub-level caving. Extensive research, with model tests, has been carried out in order to determine suit-able dimensions of drifts, sub-levels and drilling patterns. The results have been tried in practice and have given increased yield and less waste rock in hoisted ore.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to interest mining men in the economic possibilities of sand deposits suitable for modern foundry work. Many members of the profession are constantly travelling over the country and it is felt that some knowledge of the necessary properties of foundry sands will enable these men t0 recognize such deposits. It is the experience of the writer that good sands suitable for the varied work of a foundry, such as that of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, at Trail, are almost impossible to obtain from western Canadian sources. It is hoped that the following discussion may arouse some interest in the search for such sands. Sands are used in foundries for two purposes. The main use is for making moulds suitable for receiving hot metal. The mould must retain the? required shape until the metal has solidified. The second use of sand in the foundry is as an abrasive in sand blasting. This is a relatively minor use, and consequently will not be dealt with in detail. Any coarse sand with a high content of quartz will serve this purpose, but round-grained sands are superior to angular types, because they have not the same tendency to shatter on impact with the casting. Sand plays an extremely important part in the successful production of sound castings. This is more evident today than ever before, due to the greater variety of castings and alloys, each of which requires special sand characteristics. Poor sand is responsible for a great many foundry troubles which formerly were attributed to bad? metal; in fact, one investigator goes so far as to say that ninety per cent of bad castings can be traced directly to the sand. Very little of the vast amount of sand distributed over the earth's surface is suitable for moulding. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the properties which are essential in good moulding sand. Sand for this work must be able to withstand the wash and hydrostatic pressure of molten metal, and yet be sufficiently porous to allow the gases generated in the mould to escape.

"At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., the mining practice of trackless sub-level caving was started in the latter part of 1966. This type of mining was new to the mine personnel and the mining industry of Canada as a whole. Sub-level caving has presented many old and a number of new problems in maintaining the equipment used in this method. This paper will deal with some of these problems as they affect this particular mining operation. It will be impossible to review all phases of the equipment, but an attempt will be made to cover the most pertinent aspects in maintaining the drilling, mucking and hauling, and auxiliary equipment."

"ECSTALL MINING has installed in their plants the most modern equipment in the mining industry. At the minesite, digital blocked frequency controls are used to monitor all crushers, conveyors, ventilation equipment and pumps from underground. Distant pumping stations are monitored and controlled by radio. Modern friction skip and cage hoisting systems have been installed with static power supply designed for automatic operation. Rotary-type compressors of recent design are in service in place of the conventional reciprocating-type units. At the concentrator, the 800- and 1500-hp synchronous motors driving the grinding mills have static field excitation and pneumatic clutches, still meeting modern-day concepts, having been• installed in 1966. The maintenance work load has increased annually for the past eight years. The modern plant, with all the present-day sophistication, must have a welltrained and well-organized force of skilled workers, and a maintenance system which will supply realistic facts and guidelines. This presentation will review the relative location of plants, utilities, maintenance and services, plant maintenance control and mechanical control. It is the hope that enough information will be presented to weigh the size of the job and how the resources are utilized for controlled maintenance."
