"Under the term ""paleogeomorphology"" are grouped together all geo-morphological phenomena which are recognizable in subsurface geology. Since geomorphology is the science of the earth's relief features, paleogeomorphology is the science of buried relief features. Such features are of importance to the petroleum geologist whenever they lead to the trapping of hydrocarbons. In areas where these features abound -and western Canada certainly is such an area -pale-ogeomorphology ranks in importance with stratigraphy and structural geology as a hydrocarbon-finding tool. Hydrocarbons may be trapped either directly or indirectly due to paleogeomorphological processes. Both types of traps may occur either below the morphological surface or above (against) it. Several examples of types of paleogeomorphological traps are given. A new classification of geomorphological .features is proposed, with a subdivision into two main groups: constructive and destructive geomorphic processes. Of the many geomorphic classifications, some are of greater interest to the petroleum geologist in western -Canada than others. In the present paper the morphology of reefs and of buried erosional land forms are discussed in greater detail. In dealing with the reefs of the Devonian Leduc formation in Alberta, it is found that several groups of reefs can be distinguished and that each group presents a separate set of morphological characteristics. The effects of erosion and weathering are exemplified mostly in the Devonian, Mississippian and Jurassic of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Hydrocarbon traps occur below the highs on the erosional surface as well as in sands laid down in the lows of that surface. The rules which govern the formation of ancient landscape forms are worked out, using an area in southeastern Saskatchewan as an example."

This paper presents the results of research aimed at proposing new solutions in the area of belt conveyor elements. Many factors, such as energy consumption costs, and operating costs of belt conveyor elements, including belts, idlers and drives have an impact on the operational costs of conveyors. The paper presents special tests of new materials for the bottom cover of an energy-saving belt conveyor, which decrease rolling resistance. It also presents large-scale in-situ tests of a high-output belt conveyor for the purpose of simultaneous measurements of various types of conveyor belts (standard vs several energysaving types) under typical operating conditions of a lignite surface mine. Improvements in materials used for the bottom belt covers, supported by specially developed comprehensive tests of the new types of belts have provided valuable results of various proposed solutions. Since the tests of belts were done at exactly the same time and in the same operating conditions, direct comparison of the results is valid and should lead to a substantial decrease in the conveyors? drives? energy consumption, which will improve the effectiveness of belt transport and minimize its negative influence on the environment.

Dans les terrains Paléozoïques des BassesTerres du Saint-Laurent et des Appalaches, les ressources identifiées comprennent les grès quartzitiques purs du Croupe de Potsdam (Cambrien), exploités notamment à Saint Canut au nord de Montréal comme source de sable de silice pour l'industrie du verre; les arénites quartzitiques des Formations de Val-Brillant (Silurien moyen) et de Kamouraska (Ordovocien inférieur) exploitées dans l'est du Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique; les grès friables de la Formation de Guigues (Ordovicien) au Témiscamingue, à partir desquels on produit des sables de silice utilisés notamment en fonderie et en filtration. Dans la province structurale du Grenville, au nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent, les métaquartzites purs du Supergroupe de Grenville représentent une source importante de silice pour la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et de carbure de silicium. Des veines et amas de quartz ont aussi été exploités un peu partout au Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique ou de silice ultra-pure pour la production de silicium métal. Quelques dépôts de sables naturels, généralement d'origine marine ou deltaïque sont finalement exploités dans la région de Montréal comme source de sable pour des usages n'exigeant pas un produit de haute pureté.

Iron control and iron residue management and disposal are significant issues in all zinc production processes. This paper briefly reviews the most important primary zinc production routes and discusses the challenges posed by iron control in each of them. The technologies and strategies that have proven successful in controlling and managing iron are discussed. SNC-Lavalin's experience in designing and commissioning zinc plants provides a unique perspective from which to review this aspect of zinc production.

The comparatively recent developments in the Wilberforce area, and the consequent arousal of public interest in radium, seemed to call for the publication of such a paper which would be intelligible to the layman. To satisfy this apparent need, the writers submit this paper which contains material derived from various sources, and for which the writers make no claim of originality. "Modelling and optimization techniques used in the operation of the Detour Lake Mine leach circuit are contrasted to a 1973 review of contemporary techniques used by a major gold producer. The leach circuit at the Detour Lake Mine was modelled using a full factorial Design of Experiment of stirred tank reactor leach tests using circuit feed. Contour plots of extraction were applied in the plant to optimize addition rates of cyanide and the newly-commissioned lead nitrate system. Contour plot sections were used to understand the impact of sulphur in circuit feed at different operating dissolved oxygen concentrations. The 1973 review paper offers insight into industrially-applied modelling and optimization techniques. In particular, a mathematical model of plant data was developed using multilinear stepwise regression analysis. The model was presented using graphical representations available at the time and applied to optimize the rates of cyanide addition. Off-the-shelf software solutions of today allow mineral processors to quickly and easily visualize data, allowing them to re-allocate time and resources spent processing data to generating raw data and extracting actionable information.IntroductionModelling and optimization in mineral processing is the art of reducing reality through judicious use of assumptions to understand a process and leverage this knowledge to engineer practical solutions to metallurgical problems. Data analysis is at the core of this enterprise.While this paper showcases the modelling work done at the Detour Lake Mine (DLM), the primary objective is to pause and reflect on how far the field has progressed since the 1970’s. A snapshot of state-of-the-art gold cyanidation modelling at that time is a review paper of the Anglo American Group’s capabilities (Brittan & van Vuuren, 1973). The objective of this paper is not a play-by-play of the evolution of modelling and optimization since that time. Rather, it is a comparison of the field at two points in time.In 2016, DLM undertook an extensive bench-scale leach circuit modelling program to better understand the impact of cyanide, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate, grind size, density, and pH on gold cyanidation (Fournier, 2016). Two major capital expenditure projects were anticipated for 2017: improvements to oxygen control and a lead nitrate distribution system. While the lead nitrate system was planned for construction, the design parameters had not yet been selected. Following the development of the model, plant trials were executed to validate aspects of the model and the methodology was expanded to address other plant issues, in particular the effect of talc chlorite and pyrrhotite in leach feed.The variables of the bench-scale study are summarized in Table 1. Dependent variables were varied using a full factorial design of experiment with two repetitions for each test condition, yielding a total of 300 tests. Test order was randomized to eliminate bias from independent variables."

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of lanthanides elements which have been widely used in the electronic, petrochemistry, metallurgy, and defense industries. Their demand has increased sharply in the past decade with the boom in electronic device production. Some countries now consider them strategic metals for the future and it has been forecasted that REEs may become a dominant contributor to global economy. In the wake of REE exploration, mining and processing, concern has grown over occupational and community health issues and risks. A portion of available literature on this topic however is written in the Chinese language, and thus research information related to health and REE mining is not readily accessible to mineral development planners in countries such as Canada, where REE mining is now evolving. As REEs also represent an important commodity, primarily stemming from Chinese production, it is important to begin to understand the potential health costs related to this mining sector. There are two main objectives of this paper. The first is to present an overview of REE mining with a focus on geological characteristics, global production and uses with particular attention to the main producer: China. The second is to present the results of a literature review (using both Chinese and English sources) on REE mining and health and identifies key occupational and community health issues that require consideration. This paper concludes by identifying some critical issues this sector needs to address to ensure the sustainable development of this mining activity.

Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.

The microstructural features produced in friction stir welded AZ31, AZ80 and AZ91 alloys are examined when different welding parameters are applied. The microstructures primarily consist of a-Mg grains with a-Mg + Mg17A112 colonies, however melted films of Mg17A112 are produced in AZ91 alloy when high rotation speeds are applied. When the rotation speeds are slow, or the travel speeds are fast the Mg17A112 were incorporated into the stir zone, however they do not exhibit an elongated lamellar morphology associated with melted films. In the case of AZ80, the extruded base material contains a smaller fraction of Mg17A112 and few of these phases are observed in the stir zones. The results are explained based on the dissolution rate and melting temperatures of Mg17A112 controlling the overall morophology and fraction of phases in the stir zone.

Traditional approach to improvement is driven by good ideas from good people, but whilst the business case may sound good, when the project is complete, we often have not delivered on expectations.  Why not? The best way to successfully predict the outcomes of an improvement effort in a complex process is through using statistical modelling, which considers the impact of uncertainty within interacting processes.  Applying Theory of Constraints in a model helps leaders to quickly determine: Where the constraining process(es) is/are Where improvements will add the most value How much improvement should be targeted - before the next constraint takes over The confidence level of achieving a given target, which gives us a clear pathway to improvement. This paper presents an analysis of statistical modelling applications at Vale’s Manitoba Operations to achieve the 2025 targets. Using statistical modelling of the Business Structure, the team identified a series of process improvements through a Theory of Constraints Analysis. Value Stream Maps (VSMs) were used to define the required data, apply statistical modelling, and conduct training sessions enabling the Manitoba team to identify the constraining influences. Introduction The main line of ascent in the development of the nickel industry may be traced back through the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to its earliest antecedents, the Canadian Copper Company and the Orford Copper Company. Mining geology is but one aspect of the overall development of this organization, and the stress it has placed on geology grew according to the need. In the early days, intensive geology was not required because ore supply was not one of the main problems of this or any of the pioneer companies. The difficulty then was to find economic methods for reducing the ores to nickel and copper, and markets for absorbing nickel in the face of a limited demand from consumers heavily prejudiced in favour of the New Caledonia product. "Very early in the history of the region it was patent to everyone that to share in the full benefits of the industry the same individuals or company must control the whole of the operation necessary to manufacture the finished product' (1, p. 45). These conditions were fulfilled for the International Nickel Company in 1902 when the Canadian Copper Company (incorporated 1886), with its ample ore supply, took the initiative to merge its interests with those of the Orford Copper (Refining) Company (incorporated 1887) to form the new company which, with reorganizational changes, emerged as the producer of the overwhelming bulk of the world's nickel. The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, entered the field in 1899 with a refining process, and over a period of years acquired ore through purchase of mining properties. This Company operated successfully and independently until 1929 when its assets were joined with those of the International Nickel Company in order to permit the most economic exploitation of the Frood-Stobie orebody in which both Companies were interested.

This paper presents and compares the physical properties of Gelfill and cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) obtained by lab experiments. Gelfill has an alkali activator such as sodium silicate in its materials in addition to primary materials of cemented mine backfill which are deslimed tailings, water and binders. The CHF and Gelfill samples with various mixture designs were cast and cured for 28 days. Initially, the influence of sodium silicate concentration on the mechanical properties of samples was evaluated using the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test. Consequently, the effect of curing temperature on CHF and Gelfill samples cured in various curing temperatures ranging from 5?50 °C was studied using the UCS test. Microstructure of selected samples was studied wirth the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) technique. This study concludes that: (i) The mechanical properties of CHF can be improved by the addition of appropriate amount of sodium silicate. (ii) The rate of strength acquisition in Gelfill samples is faster than CHF samples over 28 days of curing period. (iii) Curing temperature strongly influences the mechanical and microstructural properties of CHF and Gelfill samples. (iv) The microstructure analysis revealed that the addition of sodium silicate can modify the pore size distribution and total porosity of Gelfill which can contribute to the better mechanical properties of Gelfill. (v) The MIP tests suggested the microstructure of specimens were changed by adding sodium silicate in a way that the Gelfill samples had a higher percentage of fine pores than CHF samples.

The Sustut Copper deposit, 230 miles northwest of Prince George, B.C., was discovered in August of 1971. Subsequent exploration has included 56,417 feet of surface diamond drilling in 139 holes. The deposit occurs in gently dipping volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Takla Group, which outcrops as rugged mountains. The general Mesozoic sequence comprises some 20,000 feet of green and red basaltic to andesitic rocks. The Lower Formation is characterized by subaqueous basalt, andesite and augite porphyry flows with interbedded breccias. They were rapidly deposited in tectonic depressions of limited extent and steep gradients. Fades changes are abundant. The Middle Formation consists of volcaniclastic rocks made up of fragments from the underlying formation. Two cycles are discernible, both with basal turbiditic, tuf-faceous sandstone and shale units overlain by massive, volcanic conglomerates exhibiting graded and cross bedding. A broader, shallower-water basin is indicated. The top of the uppermost unit was subaerially deposited. The Upper Formation is a variable sequence of volcanic sedimentary rocks. Detritus was supplied from a wide source area and included multiple reworked fragments of the lower formations and material from other rock groups known in the region. Zeolite fades metamorphism is recognized throughout the entire sequence. Epidote is particularly abundant in the Middle Formation, demonstrating the results of metasomatism. The mineralized zone is approximately concordant with the strata over 100-200 feet of the Middle Formation succession. It lies just below the zone of transition from subaqueous to subaerial deposition in the top unit. Hematite, chalcocite, pyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite and native copper are disseminated throughout all sizes of lithic fragments and matrix. Concentration into the specific zone is believed, to be due to upward leaching of copper during low-grade metamorphic and metasomitic reaction. Precipitation occurred in the zone of hydration characterized by prehnite-pumpellyite below the oxidized subaerial rocks.

"Superhydrophobic thin films were fabricated on aluminum alloy substrates by chemical etching followed by passivation with organic acid molecules; (ii) electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and (iii) electrodeposition of organic-inorganic composite materials. The physical and compositional analyses of the deposited thin films were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD as well as contact angle goniometer. The contact angle and surface roughness of the superhydrophobic surfaces prepared by the chemical etching process were found to be 156° and 2.29 µm, (ii) by the EPD process were found to be 155° and 4.54 µm and (iii) by the electrodeposition process were found to be 159° and 7.11 µm, respectively.The corrosion properties were analyzed with both polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in NaCl aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate that the superhydrophobic thin films on aluminum alloy substrates display better anti-corrosion behavior than the as-received aluminum substrate. The comparison of results pertaining to the compositional and corrosion properties of these thin films on aluminum will be discussed in this work.INTRODUCTIONSuperhydrophobicity is defined as a surface property which provides non-wetting characteristics with a water contact angle larger than 150°. It is observed that the creation of certain micro-nanoroughness structures promotes the entrapment of air in the spaces of the rough surface morphology. In addition, lowering the surface energy helps to reduce the affinity of water drops to the surface, thereby weakening the water-surface interaction. Recently, various fabrication methods for superhydrophobic surfaces have been explored (Sarkar, 2010, Huang, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015a, 2015b), such as the sol-gel process (Brassard, 2011), plasma treatment (Marchand, 2013), chemical vapor deposition (Zheng, 2009), chemical etching (Saleema, 2011), electrodeposition (Ying, 2011) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD; Huang et al., 2015b)."

"Virtual reality, a 3D computer-generated environment, has become a recognized delivery system for many forms of education. This paper describes the application of virtual reality to mineral processing education. An interactive mineral processing visualization module developed at the University of New South Wales, Australia, provides users with an overview of a base-metal concentrator and details about how the mined ore progresses through stages in processing. The module also involves developing instructional based plant layouts and flowsheets in the virtual environment. These assist the user in understanding the essential components of the base-metal concentrator.RÉSUMÉ La réalité virtuelle (RV), un environnement en 3D généré par ordinateur, est devenue un système de prestation reconnu pour diverses formes d’éducation. The simulated environment is achieved through technologies such as 3D graphics, audio feedback, and special peripheral devices to produce interactive environments.Virtual reality has been used in diverse fields including medicine (Riener & Harder, 2012), entertainment (Hsu, 2011), military (Manojlovich, Prasithsangaree, Hughes, Chen, & Lewis, 2003), manufacturing (Zimmermann, 2008; Jiang, 2011), and chemical processing (Squires, Andersen, Reklaitis, Jayakumar, & Carmichael, 1992; Schofield, Lester, & Wilson, 2005). Virtual reality is also becoming the recognized delivery system for education in many fields, including engineering (Bell & Fogler, 1996, 1998; Shin, 2002). For example, VR laboratories have been designed and developed to teach users fundamental features of heterogeneous catalytic mechanisms and absorption columns (Bell & Fogler, 1995), the multi-phase and multi-component blast furnace iron-making process (Babich & Senk, 2009), and to guide users to identify various safety measures while working in a real laboratory (Bell & Fogler, 1996)."

THE LATE Dr. D. F. Hewitt, Ontario's foremost authority on industrial minerals, was the first to point out the importance of urban minerals when he produced figures (Hewitt 1968) to prove that the Toronto-Hamilton area was Ontario's second largest mining camp in 1966 (Fig . 1). In that year, the value of mineral production within a 60-mile radius of downtown Toronto exceeded individually that of Steep Rock, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Manitouwadge and Elliott Lake. Only the nickel and precious-metal production of Sudbury .surpassed in value that of Toronto's pits and quarries. Although that position was unchanged for some years during the early sixties, it was admittedly an unusual situation: gold was still pegged at an artificially low value; uranium was stagnant; and Texasgulf had not entered the scene. However, the point had dramatically been made. The combined value of production from hundreds of sand and gravel pits and dozens of limestone and shale quarries was of formidable proportions. The mining industry of the urban fringe could not be denied. Construction aggregates, cement, building stone and bricks were fueling an apparently insatiable appetite for urban expansion and redevelopment.

THE determination of the flow characteristics of gas wells depends upon the analysis of pressure data obtained under shut-in conditions and under one or more known flow conditions. These data are commonly referred to as back-pres-sure test data, and I know you are all familiar with the back-pressure equation where, Q rate of flow, Mcfd @ standard conditions C coefficient of the back-pres-sure curve P 1 formation pressure, psia P • sand face flowing pressure, psia P2 (psia)2/1000 n exponent of the back-pres-sure curve Figure 1 is a graphical presentation of the back-pressure equation; the coefficient is the rate of flow at a difference in squared pressures of 1, in this case 2250 Mcfd, and the exponent defines the manner in which the rate of flow changes with a change in the difference in squared pressures. In Figure 1, the exponent of the back-pressure curve is 0.554 which means that for a 10-fold change in the difference in squared pressures, there will be a 3.58-fold (10 raised to the 0.554 power) change in the rate of flow.

"The process described has been developed to utilize low-grade scrap -turnings, borings, tin cans and other types of ferrons scrap which currently has been of limited or no use in conventional steelmaking processes. If scrap of this type can be converted into high-purity iron by chemical means then there is a potential saving of several million tons of metal annually in North America.The process is chemically quite simple and consists of dissolving ferrons scrap in hydrochloric acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization of the resultant solution to yield ferrons chloride crystal.s. These crystals are dries, briquetted and converted to non sponge by reduction in hot hydrogen. The HCl produced from the reduction step. is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid so produced is returned to the dissolver circuit. The hydrogen produced from the initial dissolution of the scrap is used to reduce the ferrons chloride. Purity is maintained by bleeding off impure chloride solutions from the evaporator-crystallizer circuit, and converting these chlorides to oxides and HCI in a high-temperature spray roaster. The HCl produced in the roaster is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid returned to the dissolver."

Mineral processing of rare-earth ore from the Dong Pao deposit, Vietnam, was investigated. The ore contained bastnaesite, (REE (rare earth element)) CO3F, as the valuable mineral and barite, quartz, and fluorite as gangue. To establish a mineral processing flowchart, selective comminution, size classification, and magnetic separation were tested. Bastnaesite shows brittle properties and selective comminution was applied to improve the purity of products. The crushed products were classified by decantation, and the overflow product showed high purity of bastnaesite indicating that bastnaesite becomes fines by crushing and that selective crushing can be used to concentrate the bastnaesite. Magnetic separation for the sink product was carried out and the mag-product showed high recovery rates of bastnaesite, indicating that the combination of size classification and magnetic separation is effective.
