Optimizing the long-term efficiency of passive systems for the treatment of highly contaminated acid mine drainage (AMD) is still a challenging issue. The optimization lies, among others, on improving the understanding and quantification of metal removal mechanisms in order to predict and enhance the stability of neo-formed minerals in secondary phases. Sorption, and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides, carbonates and bio-sulfides are likely the most important metal removal mechanisms involved in passive biotreatment of both slightly and highly contaminated AMD. In the same time, the preferred mechanism is precipitation of metal sulfides that are more stable and less pH dependent than carbonates and oxides-hydroxides. However, results of relatively recent research studies performed at laboratory scale showed that sulfides accounted only for up to 15% of total metals removed in passive bioreactors treating highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (around 500 mg/L). Several approaches were used in the aforementioned studies to understand and quantify metal removal mechanisms in spent reactive mixtures collected from long-term (12-15 months) operating column bioreactors. These included: thermodynamic equilibrium modeling and various chemical extractions and mineralogical analyses (such as single and sequential extractions, acid volatile sulfides-simultaneously extracted metals determination, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis). The large proportion of metals (85%) removed by sorption and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides and carbonates suggests a relatively high mobility of the neoformed minerals, especially in low pH conditions. However, no data is available on the long-term stability of spent reactive mixtures and, on the implications for the sustainable management of this type of solid waste. Lately there is almost a consensus that the efficiency of highly contaminated AMD treatment is warranted by the use of multi-step passive systems, including both chemical and biological units, installed sequentially. However, very few well-documented studies are available on the design, construction, operation and long-term efficiency of these multi-step systems. A leading example is the tri-unit passive system installed on the abandoned Lorraine mine site (Québec) to treat a highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (about 2,500 mg/L). This tri-step system (160 m3), consisting in two bioreactors separated by a unit filled with wood ashes, achieves to date a satisfactory removal of iron (up to 99%). Moreover, based on the data collected during laboratory testing, iron was mainly removed in the wood ashes unit (from around 3,200 mg/L to 10 mg/L) by precipitation of oxides-hydroxides as predominant mechanism and only partially by sorption. However, no data is available on the actual metal removal mechanisms in the field. Overall, theses multi-step systems are more complex and their long-term performance is even less predictable than the single unit systems. This paper presents the current knowledge and the research needs on metal removal mechanisms in passive bioreactors and multi-step systems for the long-term treatment of highly contaminated AMD. "An analysis of the number of industrial injuries shows that the mining sector is particularly affected, since mining is one of the most dangerous industrial activities in Canada. This has led to numerous inquiries, and supports the need for an in-depth study aiming at the identification of factors responsible for these accidents. One possible factor often pointed at is the small crews incentives and this paper presents a scientific approach applied to check a potential link between bonus and accidents at two mining companies located in northwestern Quebec.The data required to do so were the accidents, the salaries and the number of hours worked at each mining site by the hourly paid personnel for the period from June 1979 to January 1982. The analysis of the results derived from the initial information shows different behaviours of the frequency rate vs the bonus rate at these mines. The number of days lost per accident is independent of the bonus rate at both mine sites, as shown by Khisquare tests on contingency tables.IntroductionA wide variety of opinions has been pinpointed by a survey of the literature related to individual or small crew incentives and industrial accidents in sectors of activity where it applies. In addition, various formulae of mining contracts take place in the industry on one part, and statistics from this sector indicate a high accident frequency rate on the other part. These fact s have lead to this scientific investigation which does isolate the direct impact of the bonus on workers' accidents. This study was undertaken with the full support of the Quebec Metal Mining Association.The conclusions of this preliminary phase of the researchproject are presented for two mining complexes in northwestern Quebec. The procedure is somewhat similar to the approach of the Belmoral Commission, with the underlying assumption that bonus has a direct impact on accidents."

WC-Co ‘hard metals’ are widely used in a variety of industrial applications due to their resistance to abrasive wear, in addition to their high hardness and toughness. However, in contrast to their mechanical properties, the corrosion response of these materials is relatively poor. In the current work the corrosion mechanisms of two WC-Co cermets are analysed, with 10 and 30 vol. % of the Co metal binder, in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution. The assessment of corrosion involved a variety of electrochemical measurements, including open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarisation and cyclic polarisation, together with systematic analysis of the post-corrosion solution chemistries using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The corrosion potential and current density were determined, following Tafel extrapolation, allowing the calculation of the corrosion rates. It is demonstrated that continuous dissolution of the cobalt phase occurs during corrosion, which is a result of poor cermet passivation behaviour, and this response increases with the amount of binder in the cermet.

"A large amount of platinum group metals (PGM) are used in automobile catalyst. It is important to recover the metals from wasted catalyst. Nomura and Kageyama (2013) suggested recovery process that PGM oxides were absorbed to perovskite-type oxide based on LaScO3. In their process, the PGM in wasted catalyst as absorbed to the perovskite-type oxide as PGM oxide. It has potential to each element in the process if the perovskite-type oxide is selected properly. In this study, the PGM oxide absorption properties of various perovskite-type oxides are investigated to develop a new recovery and separation process. The various perovskite-type oxide were synthesized with metallic platinum, palladium, rhodium at high temperature in air atmosphere. And the PGM contents in the perovskite-type oxide after the experiment are determined by chemical analysis. Some of them have the properties to absorb specific PGM oxide selectively. In addition, in order to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide and composition of the perovskite-type oxide experimental temperature was investigated. Then it is also found that doping another specific element to the perovskite-type oxide is effective to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide. Then a new recovery process of PGM from wasted automobile catalyst, in which PGM can be separate to each element, was designed.INTRODUCTIONA large amount of Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd), and Rhodium (Rh) are used in automobile catalysis (Figure 1) (Platinum, 2013). Natural supplies for these metals are limited and PGM mining can detrimental environmental impact. Therefore, the recycling of PGMs from wasted automobile catalysis is very important. The Rose process (Figure 2) was developed as a process to recover PGM from wasted automobile catalysis. In this process, the automobile catalysis is first crushed mechanically, and then extracting agent, copper (Cu), and flux are melted at high temperature. The mixture separates into a metal phase, (Cu alloy containing PGM) and slag. The PGM is enriched by oxidizing. Cu to Cu oxide. The PGM are then recovered and separated to each element in a wet process. However, it is hard to dissolve the PGM with acid because they are chemically stable and strong oxidation agent such as aqua regia is used. Moreover, to separate the PGM to each individual element, a solvent extraction process is required."

"Organic carbon blinding is a common, yet often partial, solution to the reduction of preg-robbing. A quantitative method to assess the extent of adsorption of a given blinding agent is presented herein. The adsorption of several blinding reagents on various carbon samples is quantified using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS results showed that kerosene is more strongly adsorbed on carbon than sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), while SLS can hinder the charge transfer process of the oxygen reduction reaction on the carbon surface more effectively. The effectiveness of SLS is pronounced when its concentration is higher than 100 ppm. Raman spectra are presented for selected carbon samples: as the area ratio of the disordered peak to the graphitic peak increases, blinding agent adsorption increases.INTRODUCTION The presence of naturally occurring constituents in gold ores may adversely affect the extraction of gold in cyanide leaching since the gold cyanide complex, Au(CN)2–, can be adsorbed by these constituents (M. Adams & Fleming, 1989; Afenya, 1991; Miller, Wan, & Díaz, 2005). Such ores are known as “preg-robbing”. Preg-robbing behavior may arise from natural carbonaceous materials in the ore (M. Adams & Burger, 1998). In the past decades, a number of pre-treating methods have been developed for refractory carbonaceous ores (Arriagada & Osseo-Asare, 1984; Beer, 1994; Dunne et al., 2007; Jiang, Liu, Xiao, & Yang, 2012; Kohr, 1997; Kulpa & Brierley, 1993; Menne, 1992; Menne & Revy, 1994; Moyes & Houllis, 2010; Petrie, Craw, & Ryan, 2005; Simmons, 1996). The method known as blinding is one of the most effective and economical pre-treatment methods (M. D. Adams & Burger, 1998; Albert, 1923; Darrow, 1924; McQuiston & Shoemaker, 1975; Van den Berg, 2000). Blinding, also referred to as blanking or passivation, uses a chemical reagent to passivate the preg-robbing carbon by selective absorption or wetting (Bas, Altinkaya, Yazici, & Deveci, 2012; Brierley & Kulpa Jr, 1993; Dunne et al., 2012; Van den Berg, 2000; Yang, Qian, Song, & Dong, 2013; Yen, Amankwah, & Choi, 2008; Zhou, Jiang, & Choi, 2014). Organic reagents, which selectively adsorb on the surfaces of activated carbon and “smother” the surface, have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Two comprehensive studies by Abotsi and Osseo-Asare and Adams and Burger have been published on this topic (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986; M. D. Adams & Burger, 1998)."

Blast vibration induced by mining activities, such as stope production blasts, could lead to the initiation of seismic events that inflict damage to mine openings. In this paper, the effect of stope production blasts on nearby fault is examined. First, validation of blast vibration attenuation is performed with a numerical model representing a single blast hole through comparison with that calculated from charge-weight scaling law derived from in-situ data. Subsequently, a mine-wide scale model with a fault parallel to a steeply dipping, tabular ore deposit that is mined out with sublevel stoping method is generated, and the stopes are extracted and backfilled with static analysis to simulate burst-prone conditions on the fault. Based on the stress states, dynamic analysis is performed, in which blast vibration is applied to grid points on a stope wall on the hanging wall side. This assumes 9 blast holes located close to the wall, and blast-induced particle velocities that consider the positional relationships between the assumed blast holes and the stope wall are applied. During the dynamic analysis, blast sequence is considered, and stress states and shear displacement on the faults are examined. It is found from results that, after a rise in normal stress on the fault due to compressive waves induced by the blasts, the normal stress decreases because of the reflection of the compressive waves on the fault. The reduction in the normal stress due to the reflected waves is found to be large enough to cause the fault to slip. The results also show that the level of normal stress eventually keeps decreasing with time as the blast sequence proceeds and that an increase in shear displacement on the fault is accompanied by a decrease in normal stress. This study clarifies the mechanism by which blast vibration causes the fault to slip. In addition, the simulation technique to apply blast vibration that takes into account blast sequence and the locations of blast holes to a stope wall is developed.

"The Weyburn Oil Field, located 80 miles southeast of Regina, Saskatchewan, was discovered by Central-Del Rio Oils Limited, in January, 1955. As of January 1st, 1959, the field had 357 wells capable of producing an estimated total of 45,100 barrels of oil per day.Highly portable, economical, drilling rigs are used to penetrate the pay at a depth of 4,400 to 5,100 feet. Presently, the complete drilling operation for an average field well, including drilling, coring, testing, and running casing, requires 12 days. Drilling procedures are conventional for a field of this depth and no serious problems exist. Central-Del Rio core the productive section of all their wells, which provides valuable information for well completions and reservoir studies. Production casing procedure is to set through the zone and perforate the productive inter-val. This was found advisable due to the lensing nature of the porosity and permeability throughout the reservoir, and to the high connate water saturation encountered in the tighter sections of the reservoir in the north and northeast areas of the field.Although a few wells in the field have produced naturally by flowing or pumping without acid treatment, it has generally been necessary to acidize the wells to make them commercial producers. To date, acid treatments appear to effect better stimulation of the limestone reservoir than fracturing treatments. Perforation sealing balls have been used as an aid in selectively treating all of the perforated interval.The majority of the field is on pump, producing at a low gas-oil ratio. The main part of the field has water-free production, with most of the water being produced in the north and northeastern area. Salt-water disposal is now available in the field through two disposal wells completed in the Basal Blairmore sand.The Midale Beds ""Marly"" and ""Vuggy"" zones form the principal reservoir, which is a stratigraphic trap, with the north and northeast edges terminated by a porosity and permeability pinch-out and the south-west and west edges bounded by water-laden porosity. There is no evidence to date of a gas cap. The reservoir apparently is producing on a fluid-expansion-type mechanism. The increasing water production in wells on the southwest and west edges of the field indicated water encroachment from these directions, and suggests some recovery energy may be available from this source.The total probable ultimate remaining recoverable reserves have been estimated at° 332,469,000 barrels of oil. Markets have not been able to keep up with the rate of development of the medium crude re-serves. However, it is felt strongly that substantial additional markets for Weyburn medium crude will be developed by the producers in the near future at realistic wellhead prices."

"The QR gold deposit lies in the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia. The deposit was discovered in 1977 and since then a mineable reserve of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au has' been outlined in three separate zones. Soil sampling of glacial tills followed by diamond drilling of favourable host rocks proved to be key exploration techniques.The deposit is situated in the southern Quesnel terrane along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt which here comprises a sequence of basic and intermediate volcanics and a series of stocks of alkaline affinity; generally diorite, monzonite and syenite. Hornfels and epidote-rich ferromagnesian exoskarn and sulphide-rich mantos have developed in a metamorphic aureole formed around a central diorite stock. Gold-rich zones lie along the outer periphery of the aureole where bodies of gold-bearing epidote-rich skarn and auriferous mantos rich in epidote and pyrite have formed in beds of calcareous tuffite lying at the top of a thick basaltic sequence. The deposit is regarded as' a subclass of gold skarn deposits. Diagnostic features are its association with alkalic intrusive rocks in a subvolcanic setting and the presence of oxidized, epidote-rich mineral assemblages.IntroductionThe QR gold deposit lies within the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia, 58 km southeast of Quesnel. The deposit, owned by Kinross Gold, was discovered during a regional reconnaissance program by Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited and Newconex Canadian Exploration in 1977. Considerable exploration and development has been done since that time. Mineable reserves of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au have been outlined to date in three zones."

"In March, 1968, Skega Ruh her Liners were used to reline the shell of an 8' x 12' Allis Chalmers ball mill.This mill is used to regrind the cyanided pulp from 58i -200 mesh to 92% -200 mesh prior to this pulp passing to the flotation circuit, at approximately 450 tons per day.Before the use of rubber liners, the regrind ball Mill shell had been lined with single wave ni-hard liner!'. These liners had an average life of five years. Ni-hard end liners were used both prior to and during the use of rubber liners, as the life of the ni-hard end liners was about seven years, and it was thus felt that little economic benefit would be realized by lining the ball mill ends with rubber.The rubber lining used has a thickness of 57.15 millimeters and the square shaped lifter bars which are spaced at 14~ inch centres, have a 4"" x 4"" cross-sectional dimension.With the use of ni-hard liners, the consumption of 1 1/4 forged steel balls averaged 1.062 pounds per ton, Using rubber liners the consumption of l~"" forged steel balls increased to 1.368 pounds per ton. Also the level of the ball load which previously had been kept at approximately 18 inches below the mill discharge, had to be increased to approximately 8 inches below the mill discharge in order to effect the same grind.The initial gri4ding performance of the newly relined mill was also poor, until the leading edge of the rubber lifter bars, which were square shaped in cross-section had been worn to a rounded profile. This paper discusses microstructural changes produced by two novel approaches using electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) in which periodic strain fields/microporosity was incorporated within the large columnar grains of Zr02- 8wt.%Y2O3 (8YSZ). The traditional columnar microstructure of partially stabilized zirconia has been slightly modified to produce a lower thermal conductive thermal barrier coating (TBC) by periodically interrupting the condensing vapor resulting in microstructural modifications with diffuse or sharp interfaces and morphological changes on the sub-micron scale without changing the composition of the TBC. These microstructural modifications resulted in a 20-30% reduction in the thermal conductivity, 28-56% increase in hemispherical reflectance, improved oxidation cyclic life (over 100%), and better strain tolerance as compared to standard ZrO2-8wt.%Y2O3 deposited on platinum-nickel-aluminide and CoNiCrA1Y bond-coated MAR-M-247 test samples. The TBC with tailored microstructures were examined by various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), steady-state laser heat flux technique, and hemispherical reflectance.

"The Orenada Zone 4 deposit is a small vein-type gold deposit occurring directly within the Cadillac Break southeast of Val d' Or in southeastern Abitibi Sub province. Mineralization is hosted by the Piche Group which, on the Orenada property, consists of talcchlorite- carbonate, chlorite-carbonate, and sericite-chlorite schists, derived from ultramafic volcanic, mafic igneous, and intermediate to felsic volcaniclastic rocks, respectively. All these rocks have been carbonatized.Rocks of the Pichi Group display a strong east-west, subvertical S1foliation, which is superimposed by asymmetric, intrafolial F2folds with shallow to moderate plunge to the east and to the west. F2folds are accompanied by an S2, subvertical axial planar cleavage, and are interpreted to result from dextral transcurrent shearing along sr.The Zone 4 deposit occurs within a large F2 fold, 60 m wide and plunging at 45 to the east, down to a depth of at least 300m. The auriferous zones consist essentially of zones of closely spaced, parallel quartz-tourmaline-albite-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins concordant to Sr these veins have been folded by the large F2fold and may pre-date the folding. A few discordant quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins, post- dating the F2 folding, also contain gold. Wallrocks adjacent to concordant veins have been carbonatized, albitized and contain significant amounts of tourmaline and arsenopyrite, with which gold is intimately associated.The Orenada Zone 4 deposit is a unique example of a deformed vein- type gold deposit, and exemplifies one of several types of association of lode gold deposits with folds."

"INTRODUCTIONI have been asked to make available our method of determining the ""Live Inventory"" within a gravity type thickener. The ""Live Inventory"" being that tonnage compatible with the optimum underflow density that satisfies the process requirements.One prerequisite of the calculations is the proper determination of the final pumpable underflow density. A further requirement is that, prior to shutdown, the thickener has been operated properly, particularly that it has not been operated for storage capacity.Until recently I had few chances to check the method. However, I was most fortunate to have had a recent opportunity covering several months on a 300 ft diameter thickener at a plant in the U.S.A., wherein the method was tested and verified many times. The method proved accurate in that our calculated tonnage checked with the actual dried physical inventory of the drying facility.At the precise moment that the feed to the thickener was shut down, a per cent solid determination was made at the critical place and the tonnage in ""Live Inventory"" determined. Let us say that at the moment the thickener U' Flow solids was 20%. The thickener then was allowed to cperate until the U' Flow solids dropped below 20%, at which time the thickener was deemed to be relieved. Anything much less than 20% was not suitable to the subsequent centrifuge operation.Most large metallurgical thickeners have a configuration of three slopes at the thickener ""bed"". These slopes are dictated by the raking blades and are shown on the manufacturers' erection drawings. The first slope is from the outer periphery and generally takes up a distance of about 60% of the radius, the second slope generally taking up the remaining 40%. Within this 40% area, there is usually another slope taken up by the cone on ""B"" type thickeners or an actual steeper inner slope on ""C"" type thickeners."

"Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has been manufacturing winders since 1949 mostly for the South African mining industry.Table 1 shows that the vast majority of winders have been double drum winders. At the greater depths with larger ropes being employed, it became apparent that multi-rope winders would be needed. The high stress variation in Koepe winder ropes at great depths especially beyond 2000 m, ruled out this possibility. Thus the original concept was borne for the Blair multi-rope winder where the stress level variations in the rope would be as per the well known, tried and tested double drum winder. The Blair multi-rope was also devised to increase payload by using multiple ropes.With the increasing costs of transporting men and material coupled with fact that orebodies are getting deeper, various feasibility studies have been carried out by South African mining houses. For this reason Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has done conceptual design work of both double drum and Blair multi-rope winders with diameters up to 8.5 m dia (still well within our manufacturing capabilities). These feasibility studies have looked at depths approaching 4000 m*.This paper covers the typical duties leading to the choice of single drum, double drum, Koepe and Blair multi-rope hoists on South African gold mines. A brief synopsis of Dorbyl hoists in use in the South African mining industry, with some indications of future trends, will be discussed.With current installed depths of wind approaching 2500 m, the Blair multi-rope hoist has been used extensively for the heavier payloads.Some of the main considerations pertinent to the design of the Blair multi-rope hoist are illustrated together with the implications of using this type of hoist to winding depths of3000 m to 4000 m in the foreseeable future."

"Poor separation of lead from a copper concentrate of a major base metal producer was thought to have resulted from copper (0.2-0.4%) in the galena which caused it to float with chalcopyrite. No inclusions of copper mineral were detected which could account for the flotation of galena. The tendency for copper-bearing galena to float with chalcopyrite was confirmed by Hallimond-tube experiments in which the floatability of copper-doped synthetic galena (0.1-0.4% Cu) was approximately four times as high as copper-free galena. The difference in the cell edge (5.9338 ± 0.0003 A, Cudoped galena; 5.9361 ± 0.0002 A, Cu-free galena) indicated that the copper was lattice-bound and did not occur as submicroscopic mineral inclusions."

Quality and durability of sprayed concrete depends on the concrete mix design, the type and use of accelerator and all the aspects of the placement onto the rock surface in the underground working. A large number of influence factors are involved and they must be managed for a successful and durable permanent sprayed concrete structure to be produced. The paper discusses some of the central issues, including how to view the long-term effects of chemical admixtures and accelerators in wetmix sprayed concrete. Permanent lining sprayed concrete for rock support is increasingly being used today and the durability can be equally achieved as for any other concrete.
