Mining-related activities have been known to create a challenging operating environment for mining companies located in close proximity to communities. Issues such as noise, vibrations from mining operations, land use and emissions are often a concern for community residents. In order to develop good community relationships it is necessary to take a proactive approach. This paper documents this approach and also deals with the social implications for Vale associated with mining activities in the heart of the community of Copper Cliff, Ontario, Canada.

The key to successful mine production plan and subsequent operation is efficient mine layout design and optimization. Pit layout design and optimization allow the delineation and extraction of mineable reserves and the minimum waste subject to slope stability, economic, quality and quantity constraints. Many design and optimization software packages have been developed to aid this intensive and challenging process. These packages include VULCAN, SURPAC, DATAMINE, GEMCOM, MICROLYNX, MEDSYSTEM and MINESIGHT. These software packages are developed as integrated computer-aided systems used for database creation, survey, geological and geostatistical modeling, mine planning and production optimization and environmental modeling. In Turkey, many mining companies still plan and design mine layouts with traditional hand methods. In this study, VULCAN has been used to design and optimize the Eti-Bor A.S. Kestelek Boran Open Pit Mine in Western Turkey. The main objective is to show the company the superior advantages of mine planning software for designing and optimizing mine layouts over the traditional hand methods. Drill hole data used by the company to estimate the reserves for planning are used in this study. The ore grade varies between %1,04 B2O3 to %47,33 B2O3. The pit toe and crest strings are projected using variable batter angles and berm distances. On the north side, batter angle is 180 and berm distance is 25 meters, on the south side, batter angle is 320 and berm distance is 15 meters. In addition to that open pit bench height is 10 meter. The concepts of block modeling are applied to the Kestelek open pit mine with detailed ore grade modeling for each block. The Lerchs-Grossmann?s algorithm is used to optimize this mine based on the block model, the economic block values for each block and the underlying field constraints. The results from VULCAN were similar to the estimates by hand. The reserve estimates from VULCAN is 13,192,870 tons compared with the hand estimate of 13,200,000 tons, overburden estimates of 15,622,889 m3 compared with 15,000,000m3 obtained by hand with a stripping ratio 1.18:1 (m3:ton) from VULCAN versus 1.14:1 (m3:ton) from hand estimate. Vulcan improves the efficiency, speed and reproducibility of the planning results. It provides mining engineers, geologists and surveyors with a cost-effective modular system for assessing and planning the mine layouts. Furthermore, Vulcan?s specific modules allow efficient access and manipulation of databases, open pit mine design, block models, optimized 3D mine layouts, and more. However, for competitive business in Eastern Europe, VULCAN should improve its software support. Effective training, help desk support systems and nearby distributors with just-in-time solutions to company problems will generate competitive business for VULCAN.

Mabounié is a polymetallic deposit in Gabon containing niobium (1.2 wt.%), tantalum (0.03 wt.%), rare earth elements (REE) (1.4 wt.%) and uranium (0.03 wt.%) that are mostly carried by pyrochlore minerals. The classical route for niobium recovery is a pyrometallurgical process that consists of pyrochlore flotation, dephosphorization of the niobium concentrate and aluminothermy to obtain ferro-niobium. Pyrochlore concentrates can also be treated by a hydrometallurgical process with a mixture of sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid leaching followed by solvent extraction to separate niobium and tantalum. However, the first process does not allow recovering REE and the second one is not environmentally friendly because of the use of HF. ERAMET is looking for new opportunities on strategic metals market and has recently developed a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of all these metals based on a sulfuric acid treatment of the ore (Donati, Courtaud, & Weigel, 2014). As for most of the oxidized ore processes, the major impurity is iron (~30 wt.%). Thus, in this hydrometallurgical process, the question arises of the elimination and stabilization of the iron as residue. The iron in solution is ferrous; goethite precipitation seems the most adapted crystalline form. Lab and pilot tests have shown kinetics of precipitation of 6 g.L-1.h-1 at pH 4.5. To reduce the salt discharge, sodium-jarosite form is more adapted, but at pH 2, 95°C only 30% of iron is precipitated in 5 hours, compared to 100% in goethite form at the same time and pH 2, 80°C. Different ways of oxidation were tested, air, pure O2, activated carbon, without drastic effect. The more efficient was ozone use, at room temperature; the kinetics of oxidation is five time faster than the other ways with 30% of sodium removed from the solution.

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern Québec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed ultrafine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultrafine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulphides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 microns and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3% S, 0.07% Cu and traces of antimony (0.03%). The mineralogical characterization showed the presence of 65% gangue minerals, 23% pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6% arsenopyrite, 2.2% pyrite and 0.08% chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05%) and sphalerite (0.03%). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3-5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20 C 72 hours extracted 97.0% Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7% Au extraction. A 16-h pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-h cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5%. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0%. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2%. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80%. Efficient cyanidation of an ultrafine sulphide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultrafine sulphide concentrates.

The Directive 019 on mineral industry, which was officially adopted in 1989, is the main tool used by the Quebec Ministry of Environment for the environmental evaluation and control of mineral exploitation projects presented for approval. This document contain the environmental guidelines which must be met by all the mineral companies during and after exploitation. The Directive 019 also contain all the information required by the Quebec Ministry of Environment in order to fully analyse the environmental impacts caused by the mineral projects proposed to the Ministry for approval. The proposed modifications of the Directive 019 cover many new topics that were not addressed in prior editions, these include : water recirculation, groundwater protection, tailings management and post exploitation environmental controls.

"Porphyry molybdenum-tungsten mineralization on the east flank of Hudson Bay Mountain crops out over 5 km2 and is intersected to depths of 2 km. Features such as a hornblende-biotite aureole, mineralogical zoning and dike, vein and fracture geometries within lithologies of the Middle to Lower Jurassic Hazelton Group and Cretaceous Skeena Group reflect an intrusive complex, the Upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Hudson Bay Mountain stock which has been intersected by drill holes. The stock is believed to be the mineralizing agent. A southeast-dipping granodiorite sill has been outlined by drilling within the Hazelton Group. Molybdenite and scheelite veins cut all rock types; however, the granodiorite sill hosts a higher density of fine-grained, banded, quartz-molybdenite and pegmatitic quartz-molybdenite veins reflecting a competency contrast between the intrusive sill and other country rock. Due to the relative abundance of these veins, grade is higher within areas of the sill. Above the 15000£ cross-cut 20.6 million tonnes grading 0.401% MoS2 and 0.041% W03 have been defined. During exploration of the deposit sampling procedures had to be adjusted because of the nugget effect attributed to drill intersections of banded and pegmatitic veins.IntroductionMolybdenite was discovered in outcrop at the foot of Kathlyn Glacier on Hudson Bay Mountain and first reported by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1944. The deposit has several names: Hudson Bay Mountain or Glacier Gulch, both after its location, and Yorke-Hardy after the original staker.The deposit is on the east flank of Hudson Bay Mountain, 9 km northwest of Smithers, west-central British Columbia, within NTS area 93L/14 (54° 49' North, 127° 18' West, Fig. 1). Hudson Bay Mountain, on the southern edge of the Bulkley Valley, is a dominant topographical feature reaching 2590 m elevation. Mineralization is partly overlain by the Kathyln Glacier which is visible from Highway 16. Access to the 3100 m of underground development is from a portal at 1066 m elevation on the east slope of Hudson Bay Mountain."

Scorodite samples were synthesized, in adding or without crystal seed respectively by using Atmospheric Scorodite Process (ASP), Hydrothermal Scorodite Process (HSP), and Improved Atmospheric Scorodite Process (IASP) individually; and their crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, specific surface area, Fe/As mole ratio, as well as the leaching stability were characterized, aimed to reveal the relationships among the synthesis methods, the compositional and structural properties, and the leaching stabilities of scorodite. The results show that synthesis methods have significant effects on the compositional and structural properties of scorodite. Scorodite samples of high crystallinity, small specific surface area, and low Fe/As mole ratio, possess high leaching stability. The order in the leaching stability of scorodite samples synthesized in this study is as follow: ASP<HSP<IASP. Scorodite particles in the sample synthesized by IASP without crystal seed are in large sizes and of pyramidal morphology enclosed mainly by crystal planes of {111}; and the sample possesses the crystallinity of 84.5%, the particle size (D50) of 28.2 m, the BET specific surface area of 3.72 m2/g, and the Fe/As mole ratio of 1.05; after leaching this sample by using acetate buffer solution of pH 4.95 for 10 days, the total arsenic concentration in the leaching solution is merely 1.14 mg/L.

Du we have a thorough knowledge and understanding of our own responsibilities as Mill Superintendents?I once had an occasion to say to a Manager that I did not know something was my responsibility and he replied with suitable emphasis ""Everything inside those four walls is your responsibility"". That makes the extent of our responsibilities clear but does not give us a check list to keep an eye on as we do our job from day to day.What are our responsibilities? I suggest they are the following:1. Developing and maintaining efficient operating and maintenance crews.2. Milling the required tonnage.3. Recovering the economical maximum amount of gold.4. Keeping costs at the economical minimum.5. Seeing that the figures are reasonably accurate for tonnages, assays, production, losses, and costs.6. Preventing accidents.7. Preventing fires.8. Maintaining the equipment and building and keeping them clean and tidy.9. Enforcing company rules and regulations."

The combination of laser welding with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMA W) forms the hybrid laser-OMA W welding. This process is an attractive tool with a high potential in welding lightweight structures, especially for aluminum alloys. For five years, this technology has increasingly attracted interest in both, industry (aeronautics, automobile, metal industries producing large structures) and academia (universities and research centers). Hybrid laser-OMA W welding process is generally accepted for its robustness, efficiency and flexibility. Coupling of a deep-penetrating laser beam with the heat and molten metal feeding of GMA W significantly expands the original welding application range of lasers. Its main advantages compared to the two individual components are deep and stable weld penetration, gap-bridging ability improvement, low distortion and easy filler metal addition. Hybrid welding allows a much wider groove tolerance compared to laser welding, especially for aluminum welding. Moreover, the reduction in distortion decreases the post-welding rectification needed and makes the assembly easier. In addition, if metallurgical factors are critical, the weld composition can be balanced with filler metal, decreasing the hot cracking susceptibility of some aluminum alloys. The combination of these two welding processes can also improve the weld bead shape quality (including the elimination of undercut), possibly reduce the porosity and increase the welding speed. This article reviews the recent works about the laser-OMA W hybrid welding of aluminum alloys. After a brief presentation on the interaction mechanisms between a laser beam and an electric arc, the paper depicts the typical welding parameters and experimental methods along with their characteristics.

Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

In this paper a statistical multi-scale method for the mechanics parameter prediction of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is presented. First the micro-structure of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is represented. Then the statistical second-order two-scale method for the mechanics performance predictions of the rock mass structure with random cracks/joints distribution is presented, including the statistical second-order two-scale expression on the vector-valued displacement, strain tensor and stress tensor, and the algorithm procedure of statistical multi-sale computation for the mechanics parameters. Finally some numerical results for mechanical parameters for the rock mass with random distributions of multi-scale joints/cracks by statistical multi-scale method are shown.

Hardfacing overlays are commonly applied on the shroud Z-section of turbine blades for enhanced wear resistance. Among various processes that are used to apply the hardfacing overlays, the plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding process offers several advantages including lower heat input, less base material dilution, rapid process time, and reduced operating cost associated with the capability to apply materials in the powder form. The development of a robust PTA process is crucial for overlay performance and repeatability, particularly in the aerospace industry where a quality intensive manufacturing environment prevails. For this reason, the Taguchi method of experimental design was selected to develop a test plan. A 4-factor 3-level (L9) orthogonal array (OA) was used in the experiment. The L9 OA allows for a more detailed (3 level) investigation of critical process parameters, namely plasma gas flow rate, traverse speed, powder feed rate, and arc current. Two hardfacing materials, Stellite 694 and Tribaloy T-800, both Co-based wear resistant alloys, were investigated by deposition onto a cast IN738 Ni-based superalloy substrate. Performance measurements of the hardfacing deposits included deposit hardness, substrate hardness, deposit density (porosity), degree of cracking/inclusions, and a quantified visual inspection. The procedure resulted in optimized PTA hardfacing parameters for both Stellite 694 and Tribaloy T-800 on IN738 turbine blade material.

"Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on.
