The drying operation of materials from particulate solids, through slurries and suspensions, to continuous sheets represents an important part of several processes in the chemical and mineral industries. The increasing demand of high productivity at low cost and minimal environmental impact makes it complex to evaluate and choose the best available drying technology for each industrial application. The drying technologies are mainly characterised on the basis of how the wet product is related to the drying medium, namely: direct and indirect drying. In the direct drying method (convection drying), the product is brought into direct contact with the drying medium, which may be hot gas or air. Large quantities of gas are necessary for transfer of the required energy. A special case of the direct dryer is the fluid bed dryer, in which the product floats on a cushion of air or gas. The process air is supplied to the bed through a perforated distributor plate and flows through the bed of solids at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of particles. Very high heat and mass transfer values are obtained as a result of the intimate contact with the solids and the relative velocities between individual particles and the fluidising gas. In the indirect drying method (conduction or contact drying), the wet product is separated from the drying medium. The drying unit can consist of a rotor forming the indirect contact heating surface mounted in a stationary or rotating shell. The indirect method uses saturated or superheated steam resulting in low energy consumption and minimal environmental impact. In this paper, a review is given of the technologies available on the market based on different drying methods. The advantages and the disadvantages are summarised with respect to issues such as investment and operating cost, maintenance, product capacity, product handling and environmental impact.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats on average 18 000 tonnes/day of chalcopyrite ore containing typically three per cent copper. The main gangue minerals are iron sulphides (-13 per cent) and non sulphide gangue (-78 per cent). In August, 1991, the comminution flowsheet was changed from a conventional circuit (crusher/rod mill/two stage ball milling) to a modem circuit (fully autogenous grinding/one stage ball milling). The 80 per cent passing size of the flotation feed with the conventional circuit was 125 microns. The Copper Concentrator has two parallel grinding lines, two roughing and scavenging flotation lines, and common cleaning, recleaning and retreatment sections. During the first six weeks of the installation phase, one of the two flotation lines was fed by the conventional grinding circuit and the other by the autogenous grinding circuit. Data from parallel surveys and historical data are used to analyse the rougher/scavenger flotation performance before and after the change. The solid and mineral distributions of the flotation feed, the pulp chemistry and the reagent requirements are compared. The mineral liberation before and after the installation of autogenous grinding is compared on a sized basis using data from the 14 consecutive months before, and the seven months after the change. Liberation was measured using the QEM*SEM(*) instrument. The overall effect of the new grinding circuit on the plant metallurgy is also assessed using the copper recovery values, the dilution of the final concentrate and the distribution of copper losses in the final tailings. A better understanding of the detonation performance of an explosive charge can be gained by directly measuring pressure, temperature and velocity of detonation (VOD). This is particularly important with explosives used in the mining industry because their performance is directly influenced by the degree of confinement given by the borehole diameter and the surrounding rock mass. A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) was initiated in early 2009 with the view to design and build cost-effective prototype instrumentation to measure the relative differences in detonation pressures and temperatures of commercial mining explosives. The project’s primary focus was on low-density explosives. Low-density (also referred to as low shock) explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. There have been significant advances in the availability, reliability and flexibility of these explosives, which now offer a range of densities and degrees of water resistance. Their detonation performance is not well understood and cannot be accurately predicted with current ideal and non-ideal detonation codes. It was therefore viewed as important to be able to directly measure pressure and temperature during the detonation process of these complex mixtures in production blastholes. Identifying the pressure release patterns of both conventional and low-density explosives under different geotechnical conditions should provide the necessary information to both validate detonation codes and better define input parameters for breakage and fragmentation models. This paper gives a general description of the prototype instrumentation developed and reports on the results obtained to date in full-scale conditions.

As mining activity moves to remote and less developed locations globally, a holistic approach to mine development is fundamental for achieving a balance between strong financial returns and corporate social responsibility and transparency. Key inter-related fundamentals such as social licence to operate, life-of-mine operational planning, minimising environmental impacts and, most importantly, attractive investment returns for the mining company all contribute to the viability of any new mining project.However, the typical practice in the mining industry is often to treat environmental and social/community aspects as separate compliance issues that are dealt with at minimum cost and disruption to the project and resulting operation. This often results in less than optimum environmental and social outcomes, and presents considerable liabilities at the time of closure when rehabilitation programs continue to require funding when all revenue has ceased.The five capitals model seeks to identify each of the key contributors to sustainable development as financial, manufactured/physical, social, human and natural to formulate a type of triple bottom line approach balancing these often competing project factors. The SUSOP® sustainability risks and opportunities framework, developed by the mining industry, bases its approach on the five capitals model and proposes an approach that breaks down enterprise silos to identify innovative solutions for life-of-mine sustainability. This framework has been developed with the nature of mining projects in mind in order to produce approaches and outcomes relevant throughout the life cycle from the planning phases, through project design and construction into operation and closure.This paper argues the need for a more holistic approach to the development and operation of mining projects, and presents case studies where a holistic approach has been applied, in whole or part, and discusses the lessons learned from these case studies.CITATION:Corder, G D, Keith, A and Dyer, L, 2014. The intent of this address is to look forward into the 21st Century and present certain thoughts as to how underground coal mining might be conducted. The views in this talk are based principally on the author's experience with mining practices in the United States. It may be difficult to accept, but the 21st Century is a mere 12 years away. What new techniques will be available? To develop an understanding of the way in which technology has been and could be changing, a two- stage analysis is made of mining technology for U.S. Coal. The first phase covers the period 1975 to the present, while the second includes 1960 to 1975. This historical perspective includes a view of underground production by mining methods, considerations of labour productivity, and a review of accident and fatality rates. Several topics are important features of this historical analysis. Among the most significant are: (1) the introduction of Ion-wall mining technology into U.S. underground coal mines, (2) the use of computers to assist in mine planning and design activities, (3) major efforts to improve health and safety performance, with emphasis on underground dust control, and (4) improvements in mining equipment with an eye towards increased reliability and up-time performance. Based on that historical perspective, projections are made in three increments. The first being immediately at the turn of the century, the second being a dozen or so years beyond that, and the third being at the quarter point of the 21st Century.

Pyritic black shales present several challenges to mining operations due to their reactivity. The risk of predetonation of explosives in blastholes, spontaneous combustion of fractured rock and the generation of acid rock drainage must be managed for safety, operational and environmental reasons. At the Mt Tom Price iron ore mine there is a need to differentiate between reactive and non-reactive shale in order to assess risk and make decisions on materials handling. The current approach uses a combination of stratigraphic information and sulfur analysis of blasthole samples. The time taken for sulfur analyses can be a constraining factor on mine production. A new instrument developed by ANSTO Minerals overcomes some of the current limitations on material characterisation. The IOR MeterÖ measures the intrinsic oxidation rate (IOR) of samples of broken rock by circulating air through a sample and monitoring the oxygen concentration over time. The intrinsic oxidation rate is given by the rate at which oxygen is consumed per unit mass of sample, in units of kg(oxygen) kg-1(sample) s-1. Up to eight samples can be measured simultaneously and the turn-around time can be less than 12 hours. Initial trials of the IOR MeterÖ were undertaken at the Mt Tom Price mine in July 2004. The measured IOR of samples from a blasthole pattern spanning different geological layers containing black shale, correlated strongly with the expected reactivity of those layers. The correlation between position in the geological sequence (detailed stratigraphy) and IOR MeterÖ results were much stronger than that between stratigraphy and sulfur content. The new characterisation technique offers the prospect of improving the ability to identify and predict the behaviour of reactive black shales and to differentiate more precisely between different materials. Mine planning, operations, safety and environment all stand to benefit from the success of further trials of the technique.

This presentation discusses a water filtration technology termed Fabric Media that is somewhat novel to the Australian market place and reports several recent mining industry installations. Like many novel household cleaning products, the Fabric Media technology applies the science of active washable micro fibres as the means of capturing contaminant solid particles. The simple Fabric Media water filtration product offers several attractive attributes when compared to the more traditional media bed filtration processes such as sand filters, and barrier filters such as micro membranes. A micro fibre based filtration media enables both superior adsorption for the contaminant and wash ability. Stronger adsorption capture enables a much higher flux and greater solids loading density for the filtration task, meaning that lower cost and smaller footprint equipment is available. For Fabric Media water filters, a textile weave is selected that minimises the flow backpressure for a given particle size separation. Thus for an equivalent filtration performance this provides a much lower operating energy requirement, generally between 50 and 80 per cent less than for a sand filter. A Fabric Media is not abrasive to itself or to the filter tank. The filtration performance remains constant and predictable. The equipment life is much longer and the asset value of the new filtration equipment should maintain throughout the project life. Fibres are extremely mechanically robust and chemically inert. Fabric Media survives repetitive exposure to a rapid mechanical washing event providing high wash efficiency with minimum equipment off-line time for the backwash. Dislodging captured contaminants by a high-speed mechanical agitation enables a minimum off-line time during backwash events. The vigorous backwash destroys adhering flocculant and eliminates the formation of mud balls, which can permanently foul sand filters. The mechanical agitation wash of the Fabric Media water filter ensures complete removal of grease and biofilm, which can adhere and block a membrane surface. In comparison to sand filters and micro filtration membranes, the Fabric Media product is applicable to a significantly wider range of solids concentrations without permanent damage. The technology is very forgiving to excursion in plant control and is therefore considered a very operator-friendly concept.

The Matakan Unit of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea is a highly fossiliferous lagoonal deposit containing numerous coal pods and lenses. The unit is strati graphically part of the massive reefal Lelet Limestone of Miocence age. These organic-rich sediments have a high hydrocarbon potential as evident from microscopical observations as well as Rock- Eval pyrolysis data. The coal is varied in regard to dominant macerals, vitrinite being predominant in some parts and pollen and spores present in sufficient proportions to constitute a cannel coal elsewhere. A high primary productivity and anoxic sediment pore waters or just above sediment - water interface have given rise to sufficient organic matter accumulations to yield a potential hydrocarbon source rock. Atomic H/C ratios of the coals are between kerogen type III and type II mainly, expressing the mixed nature of the coal and that of the associated sediments is type II. Early generated hydrocarbons (exsudatinite) have formed from pollen exines filling the pollen cavities and in places filling micro- fissures in the surrounding vitrinite.

Polycrystalline and surface complexes (at synthetic sphalerite, ZnS, and galena, PbS) of zinc(II) and lead(II) ions with eight different O,OÆ-dialkyldithiophosphate (Dtph) substances have been prepared and comparatively studied by means of 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The 31P resonances have been assigned to dithiophosphate groups with terminal S,SÆ-chelating or bridging coordinations in the mono-, bi-, tetra- and polynuclear complexes respectively. The bridging coordination of two neighbouring zinc(II) ions by O,OÆ-dialkyldithio-phosphate ligands was established at the surface of synthetic sphalerite.The adsorption mechanism of dialkyldithiophosphate on synthetic galena includes formation of a surface complex as well as surface precipitation. Principally different coordination modes of the reagent were discovered at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite (ie terminal S,SÆ-chelating coordination to the lead atom).Derivatives of monothiophosphoric and phosphoric acids were displayed as hydrolysis products of dialkyldithiophosphates at synthetic PbS.

This paper briefly describes the construction in 1979/80 of a 70m deep trial open pit coal mine near Bowmans S.A. and describes more fully the hydrogeological aspects of the exercise. The primary purpose of the Trial Pit was to provide a large sample (700 tonnes) of coal for combustion tests to be carried out in West Germany and the United States of America. Consideration was given to obtaining the sample of coal by drilling and by shaft sinking as alternatives to open pit methods. It was expected that economic mining of the deposit on an operational scale could only be achieved by open cut methods and it was recognised that major uncertainties existed in planning such a mine in the deep unconsolidated multi-aquifer deposit. It was therefore elected to obtain the bulk sample by constructing a trial open pit, which would be closely monitored to provide as much data as possible for future planning of a full scale mine. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was achieved using 26 deep pumping wells, assisted in the later stages by several hundred well points. This was probably the largest dewatering project currently in operation in Australia.

This paper presents the results of a field study designed to assess the impact of vane rotation speed on the estimated undrained strength for two Australian bauxite tailings storage facilities. The vane test results are assessed against cone penetration and dissipation tests results to identify if partial drainage may be an issue. An innovative tool capable of measuring pore pressures during vane shear testing, the Piezovane™, is introduced as an improvement over the standard field vane to assess drainage conditions in real-time.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. This paper describes a multi-lift bench stoping method introduced recently to extract the narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were chief mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The benching methods had improved both the economy scale and safety of the mining operation. The multi-lift benching method combines a number of bench lifts into a single stope to further improve the operational efficiency. Three stopes in the initial multi-lift benching trials are described.

The laboratory-scale reduction of fixed beds of iron ore pellets has been investigated over a range of experimental conditions. The effects of reduction temperatures, gas compos- itions and flowrates on 1) the rate of reduction and 2) the physical properties of the metallized products after reduction are being studied as part of a general programme aimed at the evaluation of the use of gaseous reductants for the direct reduction of Australian iron ores. This paper deals primar- ily with the effects of temperature on the rate of reduction using a H2/CO gas mixture. The physical properties of the metallized products such as strength after reduction, abrasion resistance and porosity are presented as functions of the reducing temperature.
