With the sinking of the No. 3 Shaft at North Broken Hill Limited, it was necessary to construct adjacent to the shaft a new changehouse for mining and surface personnel.It was also probable that as the older sections of the North and British leases were worked out, all employees at present working in these sections would be transferred to the No. 3 Shaft area. This could ultimately result in all personnel employed by North Broken Hill Limited being concentrated in this area, requiring the construction of new administration offices, workshops, mine store, etc., also in this area.

The Hall-Hoult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-H6roult cell - the electrolyte, the anode and the cathode - are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride - carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.The construction and testing of a full-size "Low Energy Cell" is scheduled for early 1986 and is expected to reduce energy consumption in aluminium production by about 15%.

The manufacturing industry reinvented its approach to the manufacturing process by managing and measuring it end-to-end. This improved returns on production assets, improved information quality and reduced delivery time, resulting in larger net profits through cost reduction and improved cash flow. Today this approach is standard in the manufacturing industry. Resource development has many requirements in common with the manufacturing production line. These include: control of the various steps, transparency of the state of the process to various levels of the organisation and the overall efficiency with which the process is executed. The authors argue that the introduction of manufacturing execution systems (MES) concepts and technologies to resource development processes will lead to similar improvements in control, transparency and efficiency and could improve profitability and enable staff to work more effectively and make better decisions.

The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a 7 km section in the vicinity of the Macraes township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20 o ) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, ælode schistsÆ and quartz-vein stockworks. Rehabilitation at the mine has focused on creating an environmentally benign site dominated by pasture to allow continuation of the traditional pre-mine farming economy. Changing regional economics, continued urbanisation and a reduction in traditional employment opportunities has seen a rethink in the long-term rehabilitation outcomes. The community has recognised that the rehabilitated site will provide the basis of a viable tourism venture and the creation of a Heritage and Art Park (working title æGolden Point ParkÆ) is the culmination of that process.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferro-silicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

The Western New South Wales Electric Power Proprietary Limited is the central generating authority for distribution of power to the majority of the Broken Hill mining companies and the Broken Hill Water Board. This station supplies the whole of the power to North Broken Hill Ltd and Broken Hill South Ltd. It also supplies, power to the Southern Power Corporation for distribution to the Zinc Corporation Ltd. The Southern Power Corporation has a generating station which is tied in with the central generating authority.

The orientation and location of the hydraulic legs are two very important parameters for the design of shield supports in longwall mining. Studies have shown that leg orientations and locations of a support determine the magnitude, orientation and location of the resultant support resistance which in turn affects the efficiency of the support and the ability to prevent premature roof falls in the face area. Therefore, there is a need to determine the best combination of orientation and location of the hydraulic legs for each type of shield support under various geological conditions. This paper attempts to evaluate, first, the individual role of each parameter (orientation or location) and then to determine their integrating functions in terms of ground control employing finite element analysis. Three types of shield support (2-leg and 4-leg shields and 4-leg chock shield) with various combination of the parameters are simulated and their effects are discussed. The optimum design for each parameter for each support type under various geological conditions is also discussed and recommended.

In 1990, Alcoa of Australia Limited was elected to the Global 500 Roll of Honour of the United Nations Environment Program for the environmental management and rehabilitation of the bauxite mines in Western Australia. This award placed Alcoa in the international best practice category. The story of constant improvement spans more than 20 years from a 'trial and error' start to a strategically focussed and research driven program today. The main driving force has come from within the company, against a set of strong corporate values and a well publicised Vision based on 'excellence through quality'. Along the way public opinion, action group protests, increased legislative controls together with the professional competence of internal and external environmental resources have all played a part in arriving at the level of current environmental management and mine rehabilitation performance. There were numerous lessons learned here during the evolution and maintenance of best practice. These included: I . To work diligently in obtaining a vision or strategic intent on mine site rehabilitation and environmental management - don't be easily dissuaded.

The general structural features and the principal mineral relationships of the Black Star ore body, Mount Isa, Queensland, have been described in several previously published papers. But particular reference may be made to the work of Grondijs and Schouten, whose examination of over 200 polished sections revealed some remarkable features in the process of ore deposition. The observations by the present authors are based upon the study of a smaller ·set of specimens complementary to those examined by Grondijs and Schouten and are intended to elaborate certain aspects of the mineral relationships, more particularly those affecting the ore-dressing processes.The work described applies to the primary sulphide ore only, and to the present milling practice of fine-grinding and selective flotation.GEOLOGICAL FEATURESThe Black Star is one of several economic mineral concentrations in the Mount Isa series of thinly bedded carbonaceous shales, which are considered to be of preCambrian age. The nlineralization is apparently connected with pegmatite intrustions located within some miles of the ore bodies, and has been Gontrolled in the main by major folding of the shales and by a shear system which follows approximately the strike and dip of the beds. The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

Solid Energy New Zealand is developing an extension of its Rotowaro open cast coal mine near Huntly. This large 8 year, 11 million tonne opencast coal mine, referred to as the Awaroa Project, is fundamental to Solid Energy's medium term business strategy and meets its open pit coal resource needs while further resources are developed for the long term. Equally importantly the project is also fundamental to meeting New Zealand's energy requirements in the face of growing demands, a dwindling gas resource, and dry winters creating hydropower shortages. This project with its national significance in the current energy climate, its significance to Solid Energy as a business and its significant size has been consented against a backdrop of criticism of the Resource Management Act and the introduction of the 2003 amendment to the Act. As is common practice for this type of project Solid Energy conducted a significant technical programme in order to complete a comprehensive assessment of environmental effects. Solid Energy also has an active programme of community and interested party consultation and this programme formed the basis for project based consultation with local residents, regulatory bodies and iwi. As a result of the approach taken the environmental effects of the project were shown to be no more than minor and Environment Waikato considered that the project should be processed under the limited notification provisions of the RMA amendment. The project was processed under RMA quickly and efficiently and consents were granted within 6 months of lodgement. The RMA and its 2003 amendment provided a good framework for dealing with this project and did not impede the process of development of this important energy resource.

The major coalfields of Australia are almost unique in the occurrence in some areas of CO partly or almost completely replacing CH4,t1e normal seam gas from metamorphism of coal due to time and depth of burial. This CO2 situation has some benefits but mostly it introduces particular safety problems result- ing from the high density of CO2 relative to air, magnifying problems of gas dilution in ventilation, and the greater affinity which coal has for CO2 than for CH4 increasing proneness to gas-dynamic phenomena. The occurrence of most CO2 seam gas can be directly related to igneous intrusion and to its associated pneumatolytic injections. Whilst intrusions locally increase the rank of coal by their contact metamorphic effect, normal coal metamorphism due to time and depth of burial continues after intrusion and injection together with the ongoing metamorph- ic production of CH . This new CH slowly displaces any CO to leave some present-day intruded coals with seam gas with reduced CO2 or even without any significant CO2 associat- ions. The seam gas maps of the Bowen and Sydney Basins and more detailed maps of specific areas exemplify these situations. Mining progress, plus more searching studies of igneous-coal relationships provide improved understanding of the factors involved.

Vatukoula is credited with the second largest population in the Colony of Fiji. Within an area comprising 550 acres are living approximately 4,500 people. The estimation of the grinding mill charge weight is vital to ensure its efficient performance. Mill underloading or overloading can cause losses through decreased production or unplanned down time. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia Pacific and South America (MMPT) has developed two systems for measuring mill load. The first is an acoustic system (SmartEarÖ) and the second is an online model-based charge estimation system. The aim of both systems is to facilitate better operation of grinding mills. SmartEarÖ performs analysis on an audio signal from the mill and allows each different frequency component to be viewed, analysed and used in process control for load estimation. By isolating different frequencies, SmartEarÖ can give an estimate of mill load. The online dynamic mill model uses measurable mill parameters (such as power) to predict the current total load. Kalman filtering can also be utilised to further increase the accuracy of the model. Both of MetsoÆs systems have been installed at BHP BillitonÆs Cannington mine to measure the load within their autogenous (AG) mill. In this paper, the methods of mill load estimation are reviewed and compared to the bearing pressure reading, which is the current method used by Cannington to control mill load. The redundant estimates of mill load provide increased confidence and consequently more robust grinding operation under a wide range of conditions.

Following the success of calcrete sampling at Challenger, calcrete sampling has been widely adopted as the primary exploration technique for gold exploration, in the Gawler Craton. Calcrete is uniformly distributed over large areas and produces discrete gold anomalies. This allows drilling to focus on specific gold anomalous targets. However, despite widespread use of calcrete sampling, very little is known of the origin of calcrete in the Gawler Craton, and the link between calcrete gold anomalies and primary mineralisation. In an attempt to understand this association Lisa Gibbons recently completed an honours project at the Old Well Prospect approximately 45 km SSE of Tarcoola. Her work is part of a collaboration between CRCLEME, MESA and MIM Exploration. At Old Well, a calcrete anomaly (>10 ppb Au)covers an area approximately 7 km x 2 km with a peak value of 97 ppb Au. The study looked at the regolith as a whole, processes of its formation and nature of mineralisation within it. She was able to combine previous calcrete and drilling results with her own observations. The results from this study highlighted problems in relating surface calcrete anomalies to in situ gold mineralisation.

The principles, fields of application and equipment design concepts of several new approaches to continuous vacuum treatments of molten metals and alloys are discussed. Partic- ular attention is paid to the results of pilot plant tests evaluating a launder-in-tube method of 1. continuous production of refined zinc from a zinc-bearing lead produced in the lead splash condenser of the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF), and 2. continuous refining of crude cadmium. The former trials were not sufficiently encouraging to justify consideration of the process for commercial development. The applic- ation to cadmium upgrading gave very promising results; metal of 99.99 per cent purity was produced continuously at pilot scale (120 lb per hour) from crude metal containing 5.0 per cent Pb.

A major problem that has continued to plague the surface and underground coal industries is blast induced damage to the coal seam. Blasting Analysis International, in conjunction with a number of other organizations, has continued to address this concern through 14 years of field research in 68 full-scale production environments worldwide. Compiled results were obtained from varying field conditions. These included single and multiple seam coal mines, horizontal, rolling and steeply dipping coal seams and varied borehole diameters (ranging from 102 to 381 mm) and when using various explosive formulations. Results are discussed in detail along with the tools, test methods and analysis techniques to identify and quantify the problems. Over ten major causes of coal damage were identified. A number of practical and economic recommendations are presented that can benefit the entire coal and blasting industry especially in commercial operations whose economic growth relies heavily upon recovering an undamaged coal seam.
