With the iron ore industry in Australia producing hundreds of millions of tonnes of ore per annum, the associated costs of these operations extend into the billions. It is no surprise in the current economic climate that more and more companies are looking into different ways of optimizing their costs to keep their sites operational. One way of improving operations is the use of electronic initiating systems like i-kon and Uni tronic detonators. These systems have been used around the world to improve current practices and optimize drill and blast costs. However, these systems have yet to make an impact upon the iron ore sector in Australia. Some of the potential improvements include:pattern expansion and a subsequent reduction in drilling and explosive costs;improved fragmentation and hence increased dig rates, thereby driving $/tonne down;embracing the 'mine-to-mill' concept by reducing the downstream costs of crushing and milling;improving the overall condition of pit walls and floors, leading to a safer working environment in which optimal haulage performance can be achieved; and improvements in vibration management around heritage sites and critical infrastructure, thereby saving the cost of relocation works. This paper introduces some of these concepts and the process of making the changes leading to potential savings from the improvements, using various examples as proof of the concepts.

In the early 1970s, Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) embarked on a coal mine expansion program that was unparalleled in the history of the United States. With a small nucleus of people then operating two rapidly depleting captive mines, action was initiated to develop four of the deepest mines in the United States. Because of the depth of these mines, operational and technical problems were anticipated. However, because of the high quality of the coal (Blue Creek Seam), the financial risks involved were acceptable. The total investment to get the expansion program completed (to get the new mines to full capacity) would represent an investment of over US$ 500 million.By the end of the decade of the 1970s, the Company had grown to 2100 employees who were producing 1640,000 tonne of saleable coal per year, a productivity rate of 3.9 tonne per man-shift. This productivity rate was not sufficient to maintain a profitable, viable organisation. Therefore, if the operations were going to survive, it would be necessary to improve productivity tremendously, a task which would tax the resources and imagination of all employees.

The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

Double-stack trains in the United States date back to the early 1980s, starting about the time deregulation of the rail industry occurred. Freight rail became increasingly more competitive to trucking and barge or ship, and led to major investments in railroad infrastructure. Since most railroad tunnels in the United States were constructed between 1880 and 1930, they were not built tall enough to accommodate modern double-stack intermodal railcars. Therefore, as double-stack trains became the norm, existing tunnels became bottlenecks, and railroads wanted the tunnels made larger without impacting traffic. This need to increase the clearance while not impacting rail traffic launched a very specialised industry: the design and construction of replacement lining systems in existing tunnels.Several large multitunnel railroad clearance improvement projects have been completed in the country in the last decade, and they have all been done under ‘live track’ conditions. Live track conditions consist of work windows, often anywhere from four to 12 hours, that are provided to the contractor to complete the construction work. By the end of each work window, the tunnel must be secured so that the railroad can run trains.In addition to improving the clearance, these projects provided the railroads with an opportunity to improve the general condition of the tunnels, including structural, seepage, drainage and icing conditions. This paper discusses the design considerations, tunnel assessments and construction methods used for these live track railroad tunnel projects. After confronting many challenges during the 1990s and 2000s, SRL is embarking on a strategy of growth to recover maximum value from the mine over the rest of its life. Sophisticated linear programming techniques have been used to develop an optimum strategy for extracting SRLÆs many known deposits of economic grade, while considering options for expansion and for a variety of mining and processing methods and combinations. In this year marking the centennial of the Geological survey of Western Australia, it is appropriate that we should review the value of the contribution of the Survey, and Australian Geological Surveys in general, to the exploration industry. Most geological surveys in Europe and North America had their origins in the first half of the 19th Century when the burgeoning Industrial Revolution was demanding the identification of new sources of coal and iron ore. Australia, as a young nation, essentially dependent on an agricultural and pastoral industry, and with already discovered vast coal resources in Eastern Australia, had, no great need to explore for new mineral resources. However, with the discovery of gold in 1851, the mineral potential of the country became apparent to the whole world and the first Geological Survey in Australia was set up in 1852 in Victoria under A.R.C. Selwyn. After a number of false starts all Australian States had an established Geological Survey by 1900. It is hard to assess the contemporary value of the early work of the Geological Surveys with respect to exploration, almost all major mineral discoveries were made by prospectors and most mining companies had little time for geologists - although the Chamber of Mines in Western Australia in 1910, did recommend that the Geological survey be granted an additional ten thousand pounds over two years to map all existing goldfields and the country between them, and produce a reconnaissance map of the area east of a line between Wiluna and Edjudina as far as the South Australian border!

Heavy mineral sand exploration drilling prior to the 1970s generally utilised open hole auger and air-blast type drilling. However, mining reconciliations were poor and limitations on accuracy and precision of drilling results were severe.Working with the exploration companies, Wallis Drilling principals designed various systems, including what was termed the ‘Eneabba System’ and then the ‘Capel Twin-Tube System’. Eventually the company with its improvements developed and patented the Aircore Drilling System.Aircore drilling has subsequently become recognised as an excellent drilling system for exploration and mine-sample drilling that gives good precision and accuracy in sampling both above and below water. Its use has also been extended to many other commodities and is used in a number of overseas countries.This paper documents anecdotally the development of the system, identifying problems encountered during the times it was evolving and of the means to overcome the problems as being the documentation of the story by the inventors and developers in Wallis Drilling Company. Aircore drilling system is a Western Australian technological development owing its existence to the designing and incorporation of a number of discrete improvements along the way and recognises the tenacity and inventiveness of all who contributed to the system, in both Wallis and also in a number of companies that gave the impetus to succeed.

The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. The legacy issues from mining can, and have often, extended well beyond the closure of operations. However, conventional cost-benefit analysis provides little incentive to implement initiatives at the project development stages of a new mining project as the costs that will be incurred towards the end of the mine life, 20 years or longer, appear minor in net present value (NPV) terms. This analysis can be misleading as the true costs of managing post-mining land can continue for many years, or decades, after mining ceases and any resulting unfavourable legacy issues can delay or prevent government permits or licences to develop new resources. Proper upfront planning is critical for implementing successful rehabilitation and closure strategies. The investment in this planning needs to be done in a structured and rigorous manner taking into consideration the long-term and broad benefits of sustainable land uses after mine closure. The advantages of such an approach could include the streamlining of regulatory approvals by early advice to the regulator of identified issues and responses to those issues, and clear evidence that a strong social licence to operate ethic with local, regional and national benefits is included in the decision-making process. This paper investigates the potential closure options for two case studies at the early stages of project development - concept and prefeasibility. By using a sustainability framework that can identify opportunities and risks, prospective initiatives that deliver enhanced environmental, community and social benefits will be compared with compliance-orientated approaches. This comparison is made across the Five Capitals Sustainability Model - natural, human, social, manufactured and financial. The results of this analysis demonstrate that upfront planning during project development and due care and effort during the life of the working mine will reduce the risks of long-term detrimental legacy issues. "Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The commonly used SAB, SABC and run-of-mine (ROM) ball mill circuits can achieve high throughputs with good operating stability. However, these circuits consume a substantial amount of grinding media, which can have a substantial impact on the OPEX and the æcarbon footprintÆ, specifically when viewed as an æembodiedÆ energy input. On the other hand, fully autogenous (AG) circuits can operate at much lower operating costs, but with limited throughput. The control of AG mills, fed by ores with hard and soft components, can also be challenging, due to the sensitivity of the mill to the ratio of hard to soft components.In this paper, a multi-component modelling approach was used to demonstrate that the harder component should be used as grinding media, and its use should be kept to a minimum to avoid reduction in the mill throughput. There is an optimal blend of hard to soft, and any optimal blending condition is both ore-dependent and mill-specific. Establishing this blend is challenging, and consequently discourages the use of autogenous mills. The new modelling approach addresses this challenge by providing a quantitative prediction of the influence of blending soft and hard components in a mill. This prediction can then be used to establish the required blend for maintaining a stable and efficient operation in autogenous grinding mode.CITATION:Bueno, M P and Powell, M S, 2012. The increasing availability of marker data in sublevel caving operations is changing the way draw can be managed to achieve positive recovery outcomes in these mines. This paper describes how marker data has been incorporated into flow simulations to help calibrate full mine ore recovery simulations for the forecasting and optimisation of recovery.Some flow modelling techniques do not use marker data, relying instead on the outcomes of physical and numerical experiments to guide assumptions about an idealised recovery flow shape. Other mines have access to marker trial data, but find it difficult to specifically link this marker trial information to their recovery models. This can make it difficult to create a link between the marker trial information and recovery forecasting and limits the potential value of the marker trials at the mine.In the simulations shown here, the marker rings are fully incorporated into the flow model, and can be tracked in the model. The model is compared against the real underground marker recovery information to give the user an indication of how accurately the flow settings in the model are reflecting the conditions in the experimental marker rings. Thirteen holes totalling 3200m were surveyed using a downhole time domain Geonics EM37 system at the 830 metre level within the CSA Mine, Cobar, New South Wales, in order to search for blind, electrically conductive sulphides at some distance from exploration drillholes. A significant off-hole conductor was detected in only one drillhole.Geophysical modelling and interpretation of the survey results indicated that this off-hole conductor was caused by a sulphide lens 30 metres from the drillhole at a hole depth of 220 metres.

Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited (RGC) and Consolidated Gold Fields Plc (CGF) purchased New Guinea Goldfields Limited (NGG) in 1982 as an exploration venture. Following an intensive drilling programme in the Upper Ridges area sufficient ore reserves were outlined to justify the installation of a new 700 tonnes of ore per day gravity gold extraction plant. Major considerations in the design of the new plant were to minimise production inter- ruptions in the existing plant and to include simple, but technically efficient, equipment that could be operated and maintained by a workforce with limited experience in modern technology. These goals were achieved over a six month period, commissioning being carried out in April, 1983. Mining the epithermal gold deposit is by open cut benching and truck haulage. The gravity concentrator includes a scrubber, wet hammer mill and rod mill, to crush, grind and prepare the ore for sizing and desliming. Gold recovery units consist of a jig, spirals, shaking tables and amalgam barrels. Although the majority of the gold is in the minus 100 plus 20 microns size fraction a recovery of 63 percent, from a head grade of 2.0g/tonne, is Achieved.

The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.

The optimum defluorinating conditions for Sichuan bastnasite crude ore were determined by orthogonal experiments. Over 95 per cent fluorine in the crude ore was stripped by roasting 30 minutes of the crude ore with Na2CO3/ore =0.25 at 650oC. The stripped fluorine crude ore was further treated by NH4 Cl to recover rare earth. Above 95 per cent rare earth can be leached by water after the stripped fluorine crude ore mixed NH4Cl(NH4Cl/ore =1:1) roasted 1 h at 325oC. At the same time, the rare earth leaching solution contains little Fe, Si and Al. Therefore it is propitious to further purify the solution and recover rare earth.

These materials enter a world titanium dioxide market that will exceed three million tonnes in 1990 at an expected growth rate of 2.3%. Many experts place current use in excess of 2.5 million tonnes of contained Ti02. Here we have a slide that illustrates projected growth rates in consumption, in SCM's view.

A residue storage facility (RSF) was designed to cater for Davidson Creek Area and Robertson Range Area operations under the FerrAus Pilbara iron ore development project in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. Annual ore production was about 15 million tonnes over a period of up to 15 years. The RSF was designed to handle a tailings production rate of 2.2 Mt/a over the project life with ability to be expanded at a later date. The composition of tailings was predominantly -45 ¦ material with some spiral reject material. The fraction of solids was expected to be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent solids by weight.The RSF was designed as an above ground storage facility, integrating with a mine waste dump planned close to the selected RSF site. This integration helped to increase the stability of the RSF embankment and to reduce the construction cost. The main source of construction material for the remaining part of the RSF embankment was selected to be mine waste. The RSF was designed to be constructed in stages by considering the availability of mine waste according to the mining schedule. The use of mine waste for construction of RSF embankments has several benefits over use of borrowed material.
