Recently Mount Isa Mines undertook a study to review the lead-zinc orebodies to extent of resource and reserves and determine the new life-of-mine schedule, as the Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies had not be reviewed for many years. Also, the recovered value of the Mount Isa, Hilton and George Fisher orebodies had been increased by major performance improvements in the lead-zinc concentrator. The Mount Isa Lead-Zinc concentrator processes fine-grained lead-zinc ore from the Mount Isa, Hilton and George Fisher orebodies. These orebodies have varying levels of pyrite and large variation in the grain size and texture of the galena, sphalerite and pyrite. This variation has a large effect on the recovery of the lead and zinc in the concentrator. Some ores achieve 90 per cent recovery at target grades, yet other ores are unable to achieve æsaleableÆ concentrate grade, with no metal being recovered to concentrate and therefore effectively losing the contained metal to the final tailings. Models were created to predict the metallurgical performance of these orebodies, to better reflect the variation that occurs. These improved metallurgical models and economic data allowed the determination of the Net Smelter Return (NSR) for each block in the geological block model. This NSR is the return to MIM of the metals contained in concentrate. The NSR was used as the cut-off grade criteria when determining the value of the ore. This formed the basis of the lead-zinc life-of-mine schedule and the optimisation of the lead-zinc business.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.

Learning is an iterative process, and we might reasonably expect that after more than a century of mining during an era of sustained technological development, (following a millenium or two of unrelieved hard physical graft), that the more obvious physical hazards could by now be competently managed. It is perhaps a reflection on the perversity of human nature that we have not fully learned our lessons in this exacting environment, and that worse, we have still too often failed to profit by the experience of those lessons. The more obvious underlying factors which impact on this situation are examined briefly, as a prelude to consideration of some outstanding examples of recurrent problems experienced in recent years. Reasons for the continued existence of sub-standard practices are outlined, with a focus on the human element, and finally proposals for appropriate remedial strategies are summarised. This paper therefore seeks to examine and discuss some of our deficiences and to suggest some directions for the way ahead.

Results are presented of the investigation of gas dynamics of the blast furnace process obtained on laboratory models and operating furnaces. Gas residence times were measured using a helium tracer technique developed for the purpose. Residence times were determined in furnaces of 1007 m3 and 1719 m3 and results used in the calculation of the burden parameters and to estimate the distribution of the gas flow along the furnace radius. The effect of tuyere injection of coal dust on gas distribution was also investigated and the advantage of continuous injection compared with intermittent injection is noted. The unevenness of gas distribution across the furnace area is found to correlate well with differences in the size analysis of the iron-bearing component of the burden. The mixing of the gas streams between the neighbouring raceways was studied. It is shown that in the central region of the furnace gases from every tuyere are mixed together, whilst in the peripheral regions mixing is more localised and includes only the sections consisting of five adjacent tuyeres. A solution is proposed to the problem of a theoretical evaluation of the critical gas velocity. A simple relationship between the Reynolds and the Archimedes numbers was obtained from which, after substitution of the burden size data and the gas parameters, it is -possible to evaluate the critical gas velocity. Conclusions include information relating to the optimisation of the gas distribution and views on reducing gas injection at elevated furnace levels.

The screening of iron ores, sinter and coke, and investigations undertaken to improve screening efficiency and cloth life are discussed. The major modifications to coke screening proposed with the construction of No. 7 coke ovens battery are briefly described. The major problem areas were identified as screen cloth blinding and pegging, feed presentation and screen overloading. Blinding and pegging have had a significant effect upon screening efficiency with the screening of sinter, coke breeze and wet iron ores in particular. Pegging can be reduced or eliminated by the correct selection of aperture size and shape, screen excitation and slope, and screening medium. Blinding encountered with wet coke breeze was a particular problem in which no significant progress was made.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. Continuous improvement might be defined as seeking incremental improvement over time through improved equipment, processes, technology and the efforts of people. Most people working in ore processing facilities embrace the general principles of continuous improvement. However, given the industry-wide issues with skilled personnel and the constantly changing environment in ore processing facilities, it is often difficult to identify improvements in a facility over a given time period. The driver for these outcomes is the use of basic principles and technology to achieve best practice targets. The process involves four stages: develop standards of practice to define best practice in specific areas; write procedures to guide the organisation towards these best practices; implement the procedures and develop a review process to provide a method of measuring performance against best practice.By reviewing performance against best practice on a regular basis, the organisation measures progress towards the best practice targets and the incremental improvement between these regular reviews is a measure of continuous improvement.This paper provides the background for developing standards of practice for metal accounting, metallurgy and metallurgical management. Solid EnergyÆs project evaluation process utilises a standard staged gate approach, with five levels leading ultimately to project execution (level 6). For a project to progress through each level, specific financial criteria need to be satisfied. Solid Energy primarily use value based (discounted cash flow) metrics to support investment decisions. Within this approach Solid Energy utilise a number risk-based techniques to quantify project uncertainty. This includes the use of risk-based probabilistic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation and probability-based scenario analysis. Figure 1 shows the net present value (NPV) cumulative probability. Project risks are identified through comprehensive risk workshops. The output of these workshops (list of key risks, ranges of uncertainty and probability of occurrence), is quantified within the financial models. Incorporating this risk information on a probabilistic basis allows an investment decision to be made with a robust knowledge of the range of possible project outcomes along with the likelihood (probability) of those outcomes occurring, for example 80 per cent confidence that the project value will be greater than NZ$10 M, 50 per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$50 M and ten per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$70 M. Incorporating risk implicitly into the financial analysis allows the business to easily evaluate/measure projects with different risk profiles. The detailed risk analysis does away with the complexity of arbitrary risk-based hurdle (discount) rates, as projects can be evaluated based on their specific risk characteristics. Whether a project will progress to the next level of investment and ultimately into implementation depends firstly on the value assessment in comparison with the associated risk/uncertainty, and secondly matching this with the businesses appetite for risk. At Solid Energy standard criteria are used for specific project evaluations, but in addition projects are considered on a portfolio or strategic basis also. Solid Energy attempts to maintain a mix of low risk (low value) projects with some high risk (high value) opportunities. The mix of projects must remain in line with the shareholdersÆ risk appetite. One of the keys to a successful investment decision is ensuring that the appropriate information is available to decision-makers so that they may proceed with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and impacts associated with the decision.

The Cannington silver-lead-zinc deposit is located at latitude 21¦ 52' 9" South, longitude 140¦ 55' 10"" East, on the south-eastern margin of the Proterozoic Mount Isa Block (Figure 1), 135 kilometres south-east of Cloncurry. Access is via a graded shire road for 80 kilometres south from the small pastoral community of McKinlay.REGIONALThe deposit is hosted by the Proterozoic Soldiers Cap Group within the Mount Isa Block Eastern Succession. South of the Cloncurry Beardsmore et al (1988) have grouped part of the Eastern Succession stratigraphy intothe Fullarton River and Soldiers Cap groups (1760-1740 million years) which together make up the Maronan Super Group. This is an apparently conformable sequence 10 kilometres thick and consists of metamorphosed sediments and volcanics with intrusive amphibolite bodies.The Maronan Super Group has experienced a complex history of deformation with up to six events having been recognized. The stratigraphy trends broadly north-south and is predominantly characterized by tight, upright isoclinal fold structures.

Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). The medical evaluation of the health effects of dust exposure in the mining industry should be based on the premise that the results of the medical examinations will be considered in relation to the previous history of exposure to dust.(l) To this end the Mines Regulation Act and the Regulations under that Act in West- ern Australia provide for: the prime responsibility for dust sampling to rest with the mining companies; the appointment of a Ventilation officer by each mine and the sampling and record- ing by him of dust and toxic gases in work places at three monthly intervals, or more frequently as required; the appointment of a Mines Medical Officer who shall make provision for the medical examination of persons and the prevention of occupational diseases; the appointment of a Ventilation Board, consisting of the State Mining Engineer, the Senior Inspector of Mines for the State, an Inspector of Mines having specialised training in ventilation tech- nology, a medical practitioner having specialised experience in occupational health problems relevant to the mining industry, and a Scientific Officer having duties under the provisions of the Clean Air Act, 1964;

Global methods used to explore for minerals have progressed relatively slowly since the development of the first diamond core drill in 1863. Since then, key developments such as wireline geophysics (1920s), the tricone drill bit (1930s) and aeromagnetic surveys (1940s) all occurred in response to global events. In this project, BHP’s WAIO Geoscience operations team hypothesise that a global movement towards a greener future as well as an increasing intolerance for safety events will drive another step change in exploration methods. We have leveraged our relationships with exploration contractor partners and industry leaders to develop a realistic vision for 2033 and beyond, where drill rigs, earthworks and geophysical units are operated and maintained remotely; emissions of dust and waste are eliminated; hazardous energy sources are controlled; procurement is based on sustainability rather than cost and carbon emissions are tracked with the same rigour as production metrics. We have combined these visions into a series of graphical illustrations with the aim of inspiring ourselves, our vendors and our peers to collaborate further on producing a step change in our industry.

This paper compares and evaluates the impact of income tax and value-added tax on the decision to explore for minerals or to develop a mine in four countries: Australia, Papua New Guinea, Argentina and Indonesia. Three aspects are considered in depth:- domestic tax rules applicable to mining projects;- taxation of foreign mining investment and foreign providers of expertise;- taxation of project finance (other than equity) from foreign sources.Specific tax issues discussed include tax deductibility of various costs, treatment of tax losses, special tax incentives, comparative treatment of various corporate structures, non-resident withholding taxes, and tax costs of various forms of project finance. The paper also illustrates the comparative impact of income tax on rates of return by means of a simulation of a mining project in each of the four countries. The simulation demonstrates why the highest rate of return may be obtained in Argentina and the lowest in Australia.Relevant features of the income tax systems in each country (at 15 February 1990) are summarized and compared in several tables annexed to the naner.

Rock mechanics involves characterizing the mechanical properties and behaviour of rock material and the natural discontinuities of the rock mass, while rock engineering is concerned with specific engineering circumstances, for example, how much load will the rock support and whether reinforcement is necessary. Rock engineering models developed depend considerably on the input data such as boundary conditions, the properties of rock material and rock mass. Correct evaluation of these properties frequently requires laboratory and in-situ tests, supplemented with a high degree of experience and judgment. Accordingly, since 1974, the ISRM Commission on Testing Methods has spent considerable effort in developing a succession of the ISRM Suggested Methods (SMs) for different aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering with the contribution of a number of working groups and cooperation of some other ISRM Commissions. This paper emphasizes the need and importance of standardization of rock testing methods within the context of the ISRM SMs, gives a guideline for developing ISRM SMs and finally discusses on some implementation and contractual issues associated with rock testing and experienced in practice, and briefly introduces main future trends in rock characterization, testing and monitoring. Increasing growth in the minerals industry over the past decade has raised the question of whether the standard of training for new geologists has been negatively impacted. This hypothesis was tested by means of a survey. Factors considered included the quality of training and whether it has changed over the past 50 years, preferred styles of training compared to styles of training received and whether the quality of training provided by a company changed with the type or size of company. Data from 435 survey respondents showed a consistent standard of training, but a significant increase in the level of responsibility allocated to new geologists. Those with increased responsibility also had reduced access to additional support and were often asked to perform tasks for which they had little or no training. New geologists were more likely to receive better quality training in a large company (over 100 employees) that owned the mine or exploration lease. A more structured training program was more likely to provide a higher quality result than those with minimal or no structure.

A material aim when feeding ore blends into a processing facility is to reduce the variability of the properties of the feed material and to maximise the output, or throughput. At the Mining Geology conference of 2019, we presented a paper on optimal blending of coking coal given geological variability. The paper introduced integer-programming techniques to both maximise value and minimise feed or product variability. We discussed an application where the geological uncertainty is characterised using a normal distribution and exact solutions are readily obtainable using second order conic constraints in the mathematical model. Geological uncertainty is not always normally distributed, many properties will be characterised as log normal or some other skewed distribution. For example, copper can be some form of lognormal and Fe in Iron ore has a left skewed distribution. In this paper, we discuss some distribution free techniques to optimise the blends of plant feed or output given a quantified geological uncertainty. We discuss the sample average approximation method and how to set-up and apply the method to an ore blending problem. Evaluating a case study demonstrates that the explicit use of non-normally distributed geological uncertainty can better optimise feed into an ore processing facility and potentially add significant value. The approach is equally applicable to all mining and processing operations that blend material into a processing facility or directly into a saleable product.

"Understanding controls on groundwater and surface water flow and quality at mine sites throughout all mine stages is critical to effectively manage environmental impacts over the entire mine life. Monitoring forms is an essential component of this proof of understanding. Typically, monitoring programs at mine sites have been developed in the framework of existing conditions. However; recognition of the challenges of climate change and the performance of mines during recent extreme events in Australia has highlighted the need to develop monitoring programs that are resilient and responsive to changing environmental conditions. Water monitoring programs need to be effective under a range of environmental conditions, potentially not historically experienced.This emerging challenge requires cross-disciplinary teams to work together to understand issues including: representativeness of background conditions to longer-term conditions at the mine site sensitivity of mine and closure designs to changing climate and hydrologic conditions methods of performance (eg water quality or quantity) failure during extreme climate events such as flood or extended drought.These understandings come together in a detailed conceptual and, in many cases, numerical hydrologic model that considers the mine-water environment under a range of conditions. The groundwater, surface water and water quality monitoring programs that are developed from the conceptual model need to be sufficiently responsive to be effective in the face of such changing conditions, with results in turn informing the conceptual model. Extended drought, major floods and changing weather patterns can alter recharge and discharge areas, oxidation profiles and ultimately, the contaminant flux estimates that would have contributed to mine design parameters and performance. Unless these effects are considered in the spatial and temporal design of the monitoring program and within the parameters monitored, the resultant program may fail to capture data that are critical to evaluating environmental impacts from mine sites.Developing and implementing a water monitoring program that considers these issues can build confidence in mine performance under a range of conditions, leading to increased confidence by all stakeholders in long-term mine performance during and after closure.CITATION:Weaver, T R, Price, A D, Patterson, O and Germs, W J, 2013. Lihir operations of Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) are on Lihir Island (PNG) which is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of the national capital Port Moresby. The mine is located within the Luise Caldera of the Luise Volcano which is located on the east coast of the island. The caldera is an extinct volcanic crater that is geothermally active. Volcanic activity on Lihir Island is limited to remnant hydrothermal venting in the Luise Caldera in the form of hot springs and fumaroles. Steam and gas (including H2S) naturally discharge within the pit area and along the Kapit beach and near shore region. The hydrothermal reservoir temperatures can reach 100°C at the water table and exceed 200°C at depth. Newcrest maintains a Geo-hazard Management Plan to identify and manage the various geotechnical and geothermal hazards on-site. The major geothermal hazard to mining at Lihir is the occurrence of geothermal outbursts, which have occurred in the past with varying intensities and caused two ‘near misses’, production delays and material losses.
