Grade Engineering® involves the planning, integration and operation of coarse preconcentration techniques to reject uneconomic material as early as possible in the mining value chain to improve the quality of ore delivered to mineral processing activities. These preconcentration techniques include screening for natural and induced deportment of grade to finer size fractions during blasting and coarse breakage, sensor-based measurements of grade and mechanised sorting at particle or bulk scales and coarse gravity separation. Over the last decade, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE), with the support of its participants, has developed a framework for the holistic evaluation of economic and production impacts attributable to these preconcentration techniques. The framework combines the characterisation of preconcentration responses, geostatistical modelling, process modelling and simulation of downstream and upstream production impacts and the optimisation of strategic mine plans to quantify changes in net present value due to different preconcentration strategies. This framework has been applied to evaluate preconcentration techniques at numerous metalliferous operations and can also be used to quantify changes in the environmental metrics for energy, water and steel consumption and emission, tailings and waste rock production. This paper collates the results of these Grade Engineering® studies to show the range and magnitude of economic and environmental impacts attributable to preconcentration. The studies have shown that rejection of uneconomic material prior to mineral processing activities can have a pronounced improvement in energy, water and comminution steel productivity, emission intensity and the profitability of metalliferous mining.

A range of explosives has been specifically developed for soft ground blasting. These explosives can be used in both wet and dry blasting conditions, range in density from 0.3 - 1.2 g/cc and range in VoD from 2 - 4.5 km/s. This range of explosives has the potential to be tailored to ground type and is predicted to be suitable for a variety of applications which include: blasting in soft to medium overburden, coal blasting, wall control, and low vibration blasting. Trials have been conducted in several applications with encouraging results. Several cast/throw blasts have been conducted with these products partially replacing either ANFO or Heavy ANFO. The results from the blast have been equivalent in cast (per cent) and at reduced cost per unit volume. These products have also been used in presplit blasting and have again achieved equivalent or better results when compared to conventional presplit blasting at a lower cost per unit volume. This product has also been used in a vibration sensitive area replacing traditional explosive products, and generating excellent fragmentation and digging whilst maintaining vibration limits. This new range of products, NOVALITE, has shown great potential in many applications either reducing cost per unit volume, improving wall quality or improving productivity in environmentally sensitive areas.

The methods used and some of the results obtained from a major geotechnical study of the Ok Tedi mine area, Papua New Guinea, are described. The study was carried out at both regional and local scales and extended over a two-year period. A team of individual engineers and scientists from a variety of disciplines carried out the work. This study may provide a model for other investigations in similar environments.

Iron ore fines are used as raw materials for sintered ore for blast furnaces in the world. Since the production and quality of sintered ore have a great influence on the stable operation of a blast furnace, many technologies were developed for controlling the heat profile in the sintering machine, which largely affect the sintered ore properties. In particular, the influence of oxygen in the suction gas, which plays an important role in combustion, was investigated over the years. It is known that increasing the oxygen ratio by about 30 per cent not only significantly improves the combustion rate, but it also increases the strength and yield of sintered ore. However, the details of the mechanism for improving these qualities are unknown. In this study, we investigated the influence of oxygen enrichment at higher ratios (O2: 21–40 per cent) and tried to understand the sintering behaviour enhanced by oxygen. The effect of oxygen enrichment on sintered ore quality and the heat profile were evaluated by sintering tests using a quartz glass pot. From the results, sintered ore yield had a maximum value for O2 = 30 per cent, but strength was increased for O2 = 40 per cent. From heat pattern analysis, it is clear that the high temperature holding time also reached a maximum at O2 = 30 per cent. Furthermore, we found that with increased oxygen ratio, the combustion speed (flame front speed) was increased, but the area of combustion was enlarged. It is considered that there could be a maximum oxygen ratio value for the yield from the balance of these positive and negative effects on high temperature holding time. To clarify the reason for strength improvement, thermodynamic calculations were performed and it was found that melting behaviour could be improved by changing the oxygen ratio.

The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

EMF measurements were performed in the temperature range of 933-1095 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead and lead-tin alloys with tin in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 6 atom per cent. The oxygen in the Pb-O system was varied by equilibrating with (PbO) slag, and that in the Pb-O-Sn system was varied with the addition of lead oxide. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to evaluate the self interaction parameter and ternary interaction parameters at different temperatures, to yield: E8(pb) = 97.35 - 113.27 x 103/t Eo(pb) = 139 - 20.616 x104/1' Quasichemical formulation was employed to yield Inf to reveal the effect of tin on oxygen in lead. Results have been predicted on the basis of classical models and those obtained using the QCT approach of Alcock and Richardson at Z=2 have been found to agree with the experimental Data.

The Legacy Way Tunnel was constructed from Toowong to Kelvin Grove in Brisbane, and is the first large-scale underground excavation in the Bunya Phyllite in Brisbane. The Legacy Way Tunnel is 4.3 km in length, comprising two mainline tunnels excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with 46 connecting passages excavated between the mainline tunnels for egress provision and services. The Legacy Way Tunnel passes through two geological formations, the Bunya Phyllite and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The Bunya Phyllite is the dominant formation of the Legacy Way Tunnel, extending for three quarters of the tunnel prior to intersecting the Normanby Fault Zone (NFZ) and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The NFZ forms the contact between the two formations as part of the Brisbane Metamorphics, which underlies the majority of Brisbane City. The development of the geological model and the understanding of the ground’s reaction to tunnelling was an iterative process. The tender phase investigation data has been supplemented with additional design phase investigation boreholes, geophysics and walk overs. Aerial photograph interpretation coupled with borehole data allowed the development of the domains along the length of the tunnel. Early excavations for the spoil conveyor tunnel and borehole data from subsurface instrumentation installation provided the first construction phase data followed by the commencement of tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. Routine cutterhead inspections coupled with ongoing reviews of the predicted geology resulted in clear response triggers to selection of segment types while detailed inspections in passage locations provide the initial classifications for segment removals.CITATION:Bennett, C and Norbert, M, 2014. Host-rock - wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

The record for autonomous haulage systems in underground mining over the past 15 years is patchy, marked by many trials and attempts, with few examples of sustained operation until relatively recently. The drivers for the introduction of this technology are variously listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in underground mines, reductions in direct operating costs and increases in productivity.This paper reviews the trends for operation of semi-autonomous and autonomous haulage achieved by underground mines and the defining features of the technology currently available. The inclusion of autonomous haulage as part of mining studies and the fundamental conditions for its successful application is discussed in the paper. The components required for an autonomous underground haulage system are outlined and the key aspects that need to support its effective implementation are examined together with their associated opportunities and risks. Special note is made of the critical role people, including executive leadership, have in ensuring the successful introduction of this technology.The paper draws on published case study material, equipment supplier information and research findings. Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

Permanent rock bolts used to support rock tunnels are required to perform for the design life of the structure as a minimum. Quality of installation is critical to the performance over the life of the rock bolt.This paper will present the findings from an in investigation into the integrity of rock bolts installed in an underground hydroelectric power station cavern and access tunnel. The 25?mm diameter rock bolts were installed 50 years ago, tensioned and post cement grouted. Due to a major machine upgrade the whole facility was subject to an asset survey. The owners are responsible for managing the risks associated with the failure of these rock bolts and ensuring the structural integrity of the tunnels and caverns is maintained to continue operations, protect machinery, assure production and more importantly maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.To help manage risk a proactive approach is desired. To this end a test schedule using a non-destructive testing (NDT) system was carried out by Independent Integrity Testing Pty Ltd (i2t). The system used in this application was RokTel™. The system operates by applying a small axial impact to the rock bolt end and measuring the resultant acceleration response. The rock bolt characteristics affect the acceleration response.The data output from the system is analysed principally using Fourier Analysis (FFT) and sinusoidal waves. The energy generated in the bar, the rate of damping and changes in frequency are all assessed. Testing was carried out on 70 rock bolts within the tunnel and cavern. A selection were then over cored, photographed and documented. The data gathered from the testing is then correlated with physical evidence to establish a calibration for the remainder of the rock bolts and assess if this is a viable method for identifying defective elements, and what degree of accuracy can be achieved. The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. The mining and concentration operations of New Zealand Steel have been carried out initially from the Waikato North Head (WNH) deposit since 1969 and subsequently from the Taharoa deposit since 1972. Over the years the WNH operation has produced about 1.2 million tonnes of concentrate which has been converted into steel, while total exports to the Japanese Steel Industry from Taharoa reached five million tonnes in February of this year. Recent expansion plans both in domestic steel production and in the ironsand concentrate export market have made it necessary for the company to look closely at, among other areas, the mineral processing of the titaniferous ironsands in both deposits. This paper deals with the recent test work carried out at WNH and Taharoa on the use of the cone concentrator unit as a primary gravity concentrating unit ahead of the magnetic separation stages and as a cleaner concentrator following the primary magnetic separation.

Massive sulphide ZnPbCuAg deposits in the Halls Peak district of northeastern NSW are of the submarine volcanogenic type. They occur as a number of small lenses enclosed in shale and epiclastic rocks, in association with felsic volcanics of early Permian age. The deposits crop out in steep terrain near the eastern edge of the New England plateau. Local relief of 700 m and slopes up to 50¦, coupled with an average annual rainfall of about 1000 mm has led to local severe landsliding in previously mined areas. Mining from the 1890's to the 1960's has also resulted in unconstrained drainage of heavy metal-bearing acid waters and physical dispersion of finer grained metalliferous sediments into the Chandler River. Waters emanating from the main landslide area, from underground workings and draining scattered unconfined stockpiles of massive sulphide ore have pH values of 3 to 4 and contain elevated contents of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Fe. Chemical mobility of heavy metals into streams occurs under low pH conditions with Zn exhibiting the greatest dispersion. Increasing pH conditions downstream cause precipitation of Fe phases and coprecipitation of heavy metals. Physical dispersion of secondary metal-bearing minerals into the surrounding creeks results in wt% levels of Cu, Pb and Zn in the stream sediments thereby exceeding the regional background values by one to three orders of magnitude. Areas disturbed by mining are characterised by lack of vegetation, biomagnification of heavy metals into algae and lower plants, and partial recolonisation by metal-tolerant grass species (Snow Grass, Poa sieberana; Blady Grass, Lomandra longifolia). Rehabilitation measures will have to include landslide stabilisation, impervious sealing or removal of sulphidic materials, import of topsoil and revegetation by metal-tolerant, slow-growing native grass and shrub species.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is one of several preconcentration methods used for early waste rejection from run-of-mine ores at relatively coarse particle sizes prior to additional milling and beneficiation. DMS has been used extensively in the coal, diamonds, mineral sands, base metals and iron ore industries to produce either a final product or as a preconcentration step. Laboratory scale and pilot test work at the Met-Solve laboratory in Canada has demonstrated successful separation and upgrading of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper and lithium based ores using DMS.This paper reviews historical dense media systems, results from the pilot-scale multi-stage DMS Separator “Condor” system, as well as production plants and associated laboratory heavy liquid separation (HLS) test work on various minerals. The mineral systems tested included a lithium bearing ore and a fluorspar ore. Other minerals were tested but are not reported in this paper.Pilot plant test work on a fluorspar ore showed that 41.6% of the mass could be rejected to the tailings stream while 95.3% of the CaF2 was recoverable to the product stream. On a spodumene sample that was tested, it was possible to reject 55% of the mass to tailings while recovering over 90% of the lithium.In recent market conditions and with the decreasing grades in existing ores, preconcentration should be a consideration to maximise the value of certain operations.CITATION:Lundt, M and Grewal, I, 2017. In less than a year, Atlas Iron’s Corunna Downs Project has moved from a new discovery to a substantial resource of high quality in an underexplored greenstone belt. Located approximately 170 km south-east of Port Hedland and 40 km south-west of Marble Bar, in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, Atlas Iron Ltd (Atlas) has conducted extensive exploration work at Split Rock, Razorback, Runway and Shark Gully, consisting of geophysical surveying, field mapping, 464 reverse circulation and 16 diamond drill holes resulting in a current resource of 51 Mt at 57.3 per cent Fe (Atlas, 2014b).The Corunna Downs Project is interpreted to be hosted within the Cleaverville Formation of the Archaean Gorge Creek Group. Within the project area these rocks outcrop as subvertically dipping banded iron-formations (BIFs) and jaspilites, cherts, minor shales and meta-sediments forming a north–south trending plateau.Primary hematite-martite iron mineralisation is overprinted in the near surface environment by supergene goethite, and frequently capped with a thin laterite cover. The strongest enrichment areas have been discovered within topographic lows, proximal to fault zones, which coincide with a geophysical anolmaly. These characteristics were targeted, and the subsequent areas mapped in greater detail, allowing for efficient resource definition.Although first explored for iron in the late 1960s, it wasn’t until Atlas’ acquisition of the project in October 2012, that major strides were made to defining an economic resource. At present, Corunna Downs is Atlas’ best greenfields exploration discovery, both in terms of the potential scale of the resource and its blending capacity.The Corunna Downs prospect is emerging as a major new iron ore province in the Pilbara and includes 80 km of potential host stratigraphy. Corunna Downs sits strategically between Atlas’ Mt Webber and McPhee Creek tenements, and can play an important part in Atlas’ growth strategy as iron ore market conditions become more volatile and challenging.CITATION:Mainwaring, J H, Howard, P J and Darvall, P, 2015. The Sundance gold mine, located 2.5 km east of the town of Batchelor in the Northern Territiory, has produced over 5300 oz of gold since it was discovered in 1978. Sundance is unique in the Pine Creek Inlier in that the ore is hosted in palaeo-karst detritus and crystalline magnesite of the Early Proterozoic Coomalie Dolomite. This paper presents a summary of the geology of the mine, and describes the methods used during the two periods of mining.

In the humid, subtropical climatic conditions, typical of Papua New Guinean high-lands, auriferous carbonate-quartz lodes and stockwork veins of the Upper Ridges mine at Wau, have weathered in situ forming manganese dioxide-quartz wad flatmakes and veins. Vein assemblages and sulphidized host breccia have been chemically weathered to 20-25m depth, and microscopic grains of electrum (550-600 fine) formerly enclosed in carbonate, sulphide and quartz have dissolved in the oxidizing alkaline fluid. Coarse secondary electrum, crystalline and dendritic, is concentrated by manganese dioxide and at the base of chemical weathering. Fineness is unchanged, eliminating the possibility of gold and silver migration as a chloride complex. Experimental tests on the stability of thiosulphate, and its ability to dissolve gold and silver from colloid, crystal and synthetic alloy confirm that secondary electrum at Upper Ridges is most compatible with precipitation from (Au,Ag)(S203)23-; a complex readily destabilized in the presence of MnO., or with decreasing Eh.

PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.
