The brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley, which include over thirty thousand million tons of coal suitable for open cutting, provide the main source of fuel for the power generation for the State of Victoria. They also provide the basis for the development of a supply of cheap hard fuel for industrial and domestic use, and for the development of the Lurgi process for manufacture of town gas for most of the State. The production of hard char for metallurgical processes and liquid hydro carbons will each, no doubt, play its part in the industrial growth that will be based on these resources.The State Electricity Commission of Victoria, which has been allocated the task of developing these deposits since the early 1920's, is faced with problems of economic selection of deposits for development, and excavation and transport of huge tonnages of coal and overburden-in this year, 19'59, about 12,000',000 tons of brown coal will be won, and over 7,000,000' cu. yd. of overburden will be removed in the four open cuts operated by the Commission; by 1967, eight years from now, the demand will have doubled.This paper deals with the nature and importance of various factors effecting the planning of the development of these resources. It is in essence an introduction to the papers by C. S. Gloe, H. C. G. Rodgers and J. M. Alexander, also being -presented at the Institute conference in Victoria in August, 1959.INTRODUCTIONIt is the intention in this paper to define the factors that come under consideration in the planning and development of the brown coal fields in the Latrobe Valley, whose exploitation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria was initiated almost 40 years ago. It is proposed to enumerate, and in sorile cases evaluate, the physical and economic criteria that play their part in determining planning for the future.

The progress between 1983 and 1989 towards Management Guidelines for R16 was extremely slow and painful because protection of the mining heritage was a new function and administrative activity not referred to in any Queensland mining law. Also, until 2 December 1989 the Queensland political climate was anti-preservation. Therefore an understanding had to be achieved between John Hay, the Mines Department and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, to ensure preservation of the mining machinery in situ rather than being removed to a town site such as in Ravenswood.

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. A synergistic solvent extraction (SX) system for nickel and cobalt recovery using Versatic 10 and decyl-4-pyridinecarboxylate was tested with BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution. Another synergistic SX system for cobalt and zinc recovery was successfully tested using Baja MiningÆs pilot plant leach solutions. Synergistic SX systems have also been developed to separate iron, zinc and copper from nickel and cobalt for Minara Resources and to separate manganese from magnesium and calcium in waste stream for HiTec Energy. The gypsum precipitation problem at the former Bulong operation could have been alleviated using a Versatic 10 and CLX50 synergistic SX system. These synergistic systems have shown high selectivity for target metals over impurity metals and would largely improve SX plant operation. Maintaining a æhealthyÆ organic is very important for efficient plant operation. Careful analysis of plant organic at CSIRO has been used as a tool to pre-empt and/or solve problems in operating circuits. Work performed to assist operators has included assessing plant organic solutions to highlight impurity build-up with time, assessing reagent stability under prescribed operating conditions, correlating organic composition with impurity transfer and crud analysis. An independent estimate has determined that work in this area by CSIRO has provided over $50 M in benefits to the industry.

My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Thus my interest was aroused. I know some- thing of modern day mining communities in South Australia and wondered what they were like 100 or more years ago.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham Operation) is located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and is owned and operated by the Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM). Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in PBM; the Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Phu Kham Operation was commissioned in 2008 with an initial concentrator nameplate throughput of 12 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). Subsequent improvement projects, including the Phu Kham Upgrade Project (PKU), completed in 2012, and the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project (IRP), completed in 2013, increased the design throughput to 18 Mt/yr. In 2016, the actual mill throughput exceeded 19 Mt/a, this throughput is budgeted to be maintained until the end of 2020.The concentrator flotation circuit upgrade, completed during the IRP, called for a non-selective bulk sulphide concentrate to be generated from the rougher circuit. This in turn caused the mechanical flotation cells in the cleaner circuit, particularly those in the second cleaner bank, to become volumetrically overload. The overload reduced the cleaner circuit performance to approximately 92 per cent copper recovery at a 23 per cent copper concentrate grade, below the expected 95 per cent recovery. This bottleneck restricted copper units entering the plant to approximately 14.5 tonnes per hour (t/h) due to uncontrolled recirculating load build-up in the mechanical cleaning circuit.Maintaining the operating methodologies would have led to a copper production shortfall beyond 2016, to address this shortfall the Phu Kham Operation looked to optimise the Jameson Cell and mechanical cleaner circuit performance. The work included fundamental application of flotation practice and modelling, mineralogical analysis, bubble size analysis, plant surveys and test work. The results were used to develop and implement an innovative automated control system strategy incorporating flotation theory and operating strategies. The automation has the ability to quickly adapt to disturbances in the circuit and maintain optimised performance with little or no intervention by flotation operators.Upon completion, cleaner recovery increased to 95 per cent at a final concentrate grade of 23 per cent copper, and copper units entering the plant increased to 17.5 t/h.CITATION:Baas, D and Mikhael Gurieff, L, 2018. Conditional simulation can be used to determine the probabilities of block iron-grades being above selected cut-offs. However, there are much faster alternatives that can produce acceptable results. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody is used as the basis of a case study to assess alternatives to simulation. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce data subsets. A complete distribution of iron grades for points or blocks is obtained utilising the data subsets and the following techniques: conditional simulation, median indicator kriging, the probability from conditional expectation and confidence intervals attached to the estimation of blocks in the framework of the discrete Gaussian model. The complete blasthole dataset is considered to represent the true iron grades at sample point support while the ordinary kriging estimate derived from these samples is considered to represent the true block grades. The distributions obtained from point estimates, block estimates and simulations are compared to each other and to the true estimates of iron grades using graphs and statistics. The conditional expectation technique reproduced the results obtained from conditional simulation extremely well and it is a viable alternative to simulation at point support. At block support the confidence intervals technique reproduced the results of the conditional simulation more closely than the median indicator kriging and in the data subsets tested the confidence intervals technique actually reproduced the true grade distribution more closely than the conditional simulation.

Physico-chemical analyses were also carried out on surface energy and on xanthate adsorption on galena with different grain sizes. To compare open circuit lead primary rougher results at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., eleven surveys were made over five weeks of plant operation with varying ore sources, including a specially hauled sample of 100% Black Star ore. Three of the surveys which represented extremes in performance were selected for sizing, cyclosizing and assaying for lead, zinc and iron. A comparison of the flotation kinetics has revealed the similarities (including common problems) and differences for the surveyed ores. The concepts of entrainment and collectorless flotability are used to aid interpretation of the kinetic data.

Resource characterisation is critical for informed decisions in both strategic and operational space. The sources of information for resource characterisation are limited by: direct measurement of resource attributes, such as grades, rock-types, mineralogy, and are available only from sparse locations, ie drill holes; or indirect geophysical measurements such as seismic, gravity or electro[1]magnetic survey. Data collection tools, methods, and processing technologies are constantly improving providing a broad spectrum of options for data collection strategies. The cost of each data survey varies from thousands to millions of dollars with the value of each additional data having diminishing return for a particular business decision. The value of information analysis provides the optimal decision on data collection strategy within a limited available budget. This work presents an example of value of information analysis for new Blast Hole Assay Tool (BHAT) and Reverse Circulation Grade Control (RCGC) data used in addition to the wider spaced exploration data. The value of information is quantified in terms of reduction of grade uncertainty, ore loss and dilution by comparing different combinations of data collection methods. Four different strategies were considered: exploration samples in addition to 50 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration samples in addition to 33 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration with wide-spaced RCGC data, and exploration without additional grade control. For each strategy the observed values have been simulated using advanced multivariate geostatistical simulations and compared with simulated ground truth models. The calculated uncertainty, ore loss and dilution informed the optimal data collection strategy. Opportunity to reduce sample density from the nominal 50 per cent of drill holes was evaluated.

Most 3D geological modelling tools were designed for the needs of the oil industry or detailed mine planning and are not suited to the variety of situations encountered in other application domains. Moreover, the usual modelling tools are not able to quantify the uncertainty of the geometric models generated. The potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model (DTM), structural data, borehole data and interpretations of the geologist. This method considers a geological interface as a particular isosurface of a scalar field defined in the 3D space, called a potential field. The interpolation of that field, based on cokriging, provides surfaces that honour all the data. The 3D model and its parts are always consistent with the observations. New developments allow the covariance of the potential field to be identified from the structural data. This makes it possible to associate sensible cokriging standard deviations to the potential field estimates and to express the uncertainty of the geometric model. It also, for the first time, gives a statistically optimal, geologically sound way of interpolating geology, other than directly joining the dots as you do with CAD. Practical implementation issues for producing 3D geological models are presented: how to handle faults, how to honour borehole ends, how to take relationships between several interfaces into account, how to model thin beds over many kilometres, how to optimise lithological properties and how to integrate gravimetric and magnetic data. We describe all geology surfaces and volumes using implicit functions. These are then rendered onto the required sections, plans, etc. The estimation of orebody grades and tonnes, using an unbiased and optimal geostatistical technique, makes use of the stratigraphically bound 3D geology model. An application to the geological modelling of the Hamersley iron ore district, Australia, is briefly presented.

The Dutwa Nickel Project is a nickel laterite atmospheric leach project located in Tanzania that has been under development by African Eagle Resources plc (2012). A bankable feasibility study (BFS) has been progressed to evaluate mining of the resource (107 Mt at 0.92 per cent Ni) followed by hydrometallurgical processing on-site to make a mixed nickel-cobalt intermediate product. The unique relatively high silica contents in the Dutwa deposits, as opposed to limonite, which is more commonly occurring in nickel laterites, presented the possibility for beneficiation of the ores to enhance the leach feed nickel grades and provide economic benefits in terms of operating and capital cost efficiencies.Geometallurgical relationships, based on the results of an extensive variability metallurgical test work program for beneficiation and leaching, were developed for the BFS, which resulted in an improved understanding of ore classifications within the deposit and their responses. The geometallurgical information obtained has been instrumental in making key preliminary techno-economic decisions, such as forecasting whether or not mined material should be beneficiated and was ultimately used to drive the mine plan towards the prioritisation of areas within the deposits that delivered the best cost efficiencies and overall project economic outcomes.CITATION:Elkington, T, Lorenzen, L and Czerny, C, 2013. Metal ferrites are formed by the high temperature reaction of various metal oxides with hematite and are commonly found in the calcines derived from the sulfation roasting of zinc, copper and nickel sulfide concentrates. The Jarosite Process is designed to treat such zinc ferrites by hot acid dissolution but little information is available on the basic reactivity of various ferrites and the effect of Eh. As part of an overall study of the reactivity of calcine products from copper and nickel sulfide concentrates it has been found that Eh plays an important role in the rate of dissolution of magnetite, hematite and nickel oxide by HC1 and H2SO4. Further studies on the reactivity of pure synthetic copper,zinc,and nickel ferrites also show a dependence on Eh. This paper discusses the relative reactivity of iron oxides and metal ferrites in 1 M HC1 and the results of electrochemical studies using cyclic voltammetry. A mechanism for the dissolution reaction is proposed as well as factors which determine their leaching. It is shown that the rate of leaching of metal ferrites with HC1 is enhanced in the presence of reducing agents such as Cu(I) and Sn(II). By contrast the leaching of NiO is enhanced by oxidising agents such as Cu(II).

This paper studies the grinding behaviour of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate in a ball mill. The grinding kinetics, surface morphology, lattice distortion, wettability and moisture capacity were analysed. Grinding kinetics equation was established based on population balances model with the size distribution data from a laser diffraction technique. The SEM photos of the ground concentrate showed that the surface gets rough with increasing grind time. Agglomeration of fine particles was enhanced when the grinding time reached 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction results showed that a loss in crystalline occurred with increasing the grinding time. The peaks of the X-ray diffraction patterns are significantly broadened with increasing grinding time. Wettability, characterised by contact angle between the material and water, improved due to the fact that the surface roughness increased with increasing grinding time. Moisture capacity of concentrate ascends abruptly in the first three minutes and then changed slowly with increasing grinding time. The IsaMillÖ is challenging the way that plants are designed and operated. This paper challenges existing designs of concentrator flow sheets, particularly focusing on magnetite circuits.   From what has started out as a small scale ultra fine grinding mill in the pharmaceutical and pigment industries, it has been redesigned and improved upon for mineral processing, and has been the mainstay of fine grinding applications for over ten years. These applications have required energy efficient grinding to succeed, and have been predominately in the base metals industry.   Further development of the IsaMillÖ has now resulted in the machines being able to treat larger tonnages, with higher capacity motors. This development, along with the introduction of purpose designed ceramic media, has allowed the mill to treat courser feed sizes. At the same time, the mill still offers highly efficient grinding, and has enabled it to be operated in coarser tertiary and secondary grinding applications.   The acceptance of the mill in coarser applications, predominately in base metals and PGM applications, has enabled the IsaMillÖ to be a serious contender for beneficiation in other minerals. One such application is the potential for IsaMillsÖ to be part of magnetite flow sheets, which are being considered in Australia to meet the growing iron demand of China. The high energy efficiency of the IsaMillÖ compared to conventional technologies, as well as the smaller infrastructure requirements, provides a great opportunity to reduce the power intensity of magnetite circuits.   This paper will examine the use of IsaMillÖ technology in conventional grinding applications, including recent testwork in a primary grinding base metal circuit, as well as testwork on magnetite ore comparing a lab scale IsaMillÖ with a lab scale Tower Mill.   The growing demand for minerals over the next decade, coupled with higher energy cost, will result in energy efficient technology, such as the IsaMillÖ, being included in standard circuit design.

A sequence of ultramafic units, very well exposed in Munro township in the Abitibi areal, of the Cahadian Shield, exhibit features which indicate that they are sub-aqueous extrusions. They occur within a sequence of tholeiitic pillow lavas, thin graphitic sediments. and large differentiated sills. The units range from a few metres to more than 250 m in length and less than 1 m to over 30 m in thickness. Over 60 individual units, occurring as flat pancakes on top of one another, make up a total exposed thickness of 150 m. The units have formed from a magma composed of a very olivine-rich picritic liquid carrying up,to 40 per cent olivine phenocrysts in suspension. Different units display a variety,of cross-sectional profiles. As an example of the most extreme type of profile, a typical unit 2 m thick consists of a cap of highly jointed fine-grained quenched rock, 10-30 cm thick, which becomes coarser downwards, grading into a zone composed of radiating and criss- crossing skeletal olivine crystals forming the well-known spinifex texture. This becomes even coarser-grained downwards, with "books" of parallel platey olivine crystals developing sub-perpendicular to the plane of the units. In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

The nickel ores mined in New Caledonia for one century are mainly silicate ores. These ores are nickel enriched saprolites, formed by partial weathering of peridotites (predominantly harzburgites and some dunites), serpentinised to varying degrees. Saprolites constitute the lower horizon of lateritic soils, sometimes up to 100 metres thick, developed on peneplains now greatly modified by erosion. Saprolites are generally overlain by laterites, a more weathered horizon, where the main components are iron oxy-hydroxides with a low nickel grade. The structure of saprolites depends essentially on the serpentine content of peridotites and, on the other hand, serpentine minerals may have a high nickel content and, so, represent important nickel bearing minerals in silicate ores. Two types of serpentines can be found in nickel ores from New Caledonia: ò primary serpentines, formed by hydration of olivine at temperatures below 400¦C, during overthrusting of peridotites in late-Eocene (Paris, Andreieff and Coudray, 1979), are generally very abundant; ò secondary nickeliferous serpentines, associated with other sheet silicates in garnierites, are now relatively scarce but garnierites were selectively mined one century ago, because of their high nickel grade.
