Exploration for uranium in Australia has so far discovered reserves equal to 17.5% of the Western World's. The Australian uranium industry, when fully developed, will be one of the largest producers and possibly the largest exporter in the world. The world's nuclear industry is young, rapidly developing in size and technology and is subject to more social, political and regulatory controls than any other industry. This paper considers the probable development of Australia's uranium industry against a background of normal commercial parameters together with other factors which are peculiar to the nuclear industry. As the theme of this conference is "Australia's role in the World Mineral Indus- try" this paper concentrates on the commercial and practical aspects associated with the development of Australia's uranium resources in a world context.

Ok Tedi Mine is located eighteen kilometers from the Irian Jaya border in the Star Mountains, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Sequential flotation concentrators produce a copper / gold concentrate for market, and a pyrite concentrate for environmental containment, with low sulphur tailings from the pyrite flotation sequence being discharged to river. Strict sulphur assay targets are set for the riverine discharge. Current porphyry and skarn ore blends from open pit operations at Mt. Fubilan will cease by 2017. However, drill cores indicate an economic ore body in the skarn ores surrounding and below the current pit limits. With proposed mining from a western pit wall ‘cut back’ and an eastern pit wall underground operation, potential for ore ageing in sub level cave underground stockpiles is apparent. With little information in the literature, Ore Ageing test work at prefeasibility level consisted of multiple one tonne stockpiles of -50 mm crushed rock. For the bankable feasibility study, a successful test work program was implemented utilizing 40 tonne ROM ore stockpiles composed of exposed pit extensions of future ores. Realistic ageing profiles of Skarn ores were obtained from one tonne monthly samples subjected to laboratory testing. Test work outcomes included:• Similar ore ageing profiles from both the pre feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility study (FS) programs, suggesting ore susceptibility to oxidation has greater effect in ore ageing than rock size for Ok Tedi skarns. • Laboratory rougher flotation of pyrite showed significant variation in sulphur recovery rate, suggesting three classes of pyrite floatability.• Laboratory rougher flotation of both copper and pyrite for up to 19 months ore ageing from 11 stockpiles, suggested three stages in the ore ageing process.

This paper presents a waste rock treatment and rehabilitation program conducted at a metaliferous mine site in northern New South Wales from 2000–2013. It updates findings from 2005 for Program #1 (which examined acidity, leachable metals and tree growth in a control and three treated areas of waste rock) and includes new results for Program #2 (which examined acidity, plant uptake of metals and trace elements and tree growth in a control and four treated areas compared to undisturbed background levels) and Program?#3 (which examined the treatment and revegetation of submerged mine tailings and an exposed tailings beach).Program #1 showed low soil pH in the control area remained unchanged from years 1–14, and soil pH in the limed and capped areas was initially increased but fell back to starting levels within 12 months and remained low for 14 years. In contrast, soil pH in the Terra B area resulted in soil high pH immediately after treatment and increased in years six and 14 without further treatment. Tree height and density in 2005 and again in 2013 indicated acidity in the control, limed and capped areas suppressed tree height and density; however, in the Terra B area, revegetation in 2013 was comparable to undisturbed forest. Outcomes in the control, biosolids and three Terra B areas in Program #2 were similar to those observed in Program #1.Program #3 showed the submerged and exposed tailings initially had low pH and high concentrations of total and leachable metals before treatment, but these became non-leachable after treatment with Terra B. Revegetation was achieved on the tailings beach, with almost uniform colonisation of bulrush and common reed, along with bottlebrush and golden wattle; a variety of reptiles have also been observed on the revegetated tailings beach, along with migrating ducks, spoonbills and grebes.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Scutts, T, ?2014. Current regional geoscientific studies across the McArthur Basin as part of the National Geoscience Mapping Accord by the Northern Territory Geological Survey and Australian Geological Survey Organisation have provided a significant amount of new data which has enabled revision of the stratigraphic and chronologic framework of the basin. This paper provides an overview of these results, with particular emphasis on new results from Arnhem Land.

The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

"Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Variography can be used to estimate the variance of the lot mean for different sampling modes.Gy also defined weighting error, which is made if a simple average is calculated from the assays of samples taken from a continuous object (eg from a process stream) where the flow rate varies with time and is correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the stream.The effect on sampling uncertainty of the three sampling modes and their interaction with the following factors in estimating the uncertainty of the mean concentration is studied using simulated lots, and lots having heterogeneity patterns similar to those of real data sets, including the effect of: the type of heterogeneity (random, grading and clustered heterogeneity patterns) increment size and number employing composite sampling weighting error. Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The paper discusses the results of field investigations.

In parallel, providing technological solutions to the recycling and recovery of end-of-life materials is becoming more important in moving towards the goal of increasing circularity. The availability of fundamental thermodynamic data and advanced thermodynamic tools greatly assists in evaluating these complexities and their impact on existing and new processes. In addition, it is fundamental to support the economic performance of smelters. This paper describes several examples on how fundamental work can be applied to industrial processing..

BHP Iron Ore Ltd's Mt Whaleback is the largest single open-pit iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Northwestern Western Australia. A division of BHP Minerals, one of three core businesses of Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd (BHP), BHP Iron Ore - Newman is a joint venture with minor participants C Itoh Minerals and Mitsui. Mine planning for Mt Whaleback generates detailed sequence plans for a long term forecast incorporating equipment requirements, marketing forecasts, and pit development strategy. Utilisation of several computer packages, both commercially available and site modified, are necessary to achieve such a demanding task.

Australia is presently the world's principal producer of rutile and zircon, and also provides a major share of the world's ilmenite. Since 1980, Australia's share of the world's output of these minerals has fallen. Exhaustion of known resources, together with the changing composition of new deposits, is expected to result in Australia's share of the rutile and zircon output continuing to decline. Its role as a major supplier of upgraded ilmenite, that is synthetic rutile, is expected to increase. In 1994, the Bureau of Resource Sciences assessed Australia's demonstrated resources of mineral sands as follows: rutile 14.4 Mt, ilmenite 132.5 Mt, and zircon 21.0 Mt. These resources are located along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales, in the Murray Basin of New South Wales and Victoria, in the southwest corner of Western Australia, and in the Eneabba region, north of Perth. However, some 45 per cent of rutile and zircon resources along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales are not available for mining because of environmental concerns. World demonstrated resources are estimated at 40 Mt (contained TiO2) for rutile, 50 Mt for zircon and approximately 312 Mt (contained T1O2) for ilmenite. Outside of Australia, the most important resources of rutile, ilmenite and zircon are in South Africa (rutile, zircon , and ilmenite in the form of titania slag), Sierra Leone (rutile), India (ilmenite, zircon and rutile), and Canada (hard rock ilmenite). Significant resources of ilmenite occur in Madagascar and Mozambique.

There are two major aspects to wall control blasting – the potential for any blasthole to cause wall damage and the potential for a delayed sequence of blastholes to cause damage. The damage potential of individual blastholes is governed by standoff distance and charge weight. However, for locations sufficiently close to a highwall, dynamic finite element models and field measurements show that there is also a critical nature to those blastholes very close to the wall, over and above standoff distance. At many mine sites, the charge weight/standoff-distance is set by trial and error. Thus, a significant aspect of the present work is the determination of dynamic stress radiating from a blasthole. Unfortunately, the modelling and measurement of this dynamic stress is still faced with many difficulties. Typical models have questionable aspects, which casts serious doubt over their predictions, and it is shown that the Hustrulid Bar experimental technique does not correctly account for stress wave attenuation in extended media. In an attempt to solve the dynamic stress problem, the present work describes a model based on an exact solution under the assumption of viscoelastic material. The model takes full account of the rock mass elastic/viscoelastic properties, the explosive type, geometry and primer location and predicts a dynamic stress for direct comparison with the unconfined compressive strength of the local rock mass. This model predicts the standoff distance required to avoid damage due to a single blasthole. The behaviour of a delayed sequence of blastholes is analysed using an upgraded waveform superposition model, covering a range of initiation delay combinations, which predicts the peak particle motion (PPM) induced in the wall for each combination. This approach shows that there is no need to fire dedicated trim shots close to walls; all that is required is a carefully modified production shot. The mechanism of vibration screening is discussed, and its use in a superposition model highlights the potential of reverse firing (shield blasting) to reduce wall PPM. A conceptual model is also introduced to give a further insight to vibration screening and damage (via ground heave). This model predicts that a centre-lift blast will have a central heave profile and that a reverse-fired shot will produce a smaller power trough than that produced by a standard shot. It is demonstrated that the mechanism of presplit formation is not well understood; nevertheless, experimental evidence shows that presplits can be an effective method for reducing wall vibrations.CITATION:Blair, D P, 2015. During operations, mining and metallurgical processes may generate effluents such as tailings water, acid mine drainage (AMD) and seepage and process acid streams. Depending on the type of ore and the metallurgical process, these effluents may contain one or more toxic compounds (eg acidity or alkalinity, cyanide, ammonia and/or nitrate, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), sulfate) in elevated concentrations requiring treatment before their discharge to the environment or recycle/reuse in the process. Natural oxidation of sulfide minerals present in mining wastes (eg tailings and waste rock) at mining sites may generate AMD, which is characterised as a low pH, high acidity effluent containing heavy metals and sulfate. If generation of AMD cannot be controlled and/or prevented, AMD needs to be collected and treated for neutralisation of acidity and reduction of metals and TSS to meet regulated water quality standards. It is important to note that some of these compounds may persist in run-off from mine sites, even after the mine and processing facilities are decommissioned. Treatment of mining and metallurgical process effluents can be accomplished by means of various physical, chemical and/or biological methods. The mode of process application may vary from the use of either specifically designed, controlled and automated facilities or passive systems. Lime neutralisation and precipitation is the most common method used in the mining industry to treat AMD. To reduce the problems associated with disposal and long-term storage of the resulting sludge, the use of a high-density sludge process (HDS) has become a preferred option. The use of other chemical reagents, waste or by-products from other industries, and biological sulfate reduction methods can also be considered as viable options for site-specific situations. Recently, several passive treatment systems have been designed and successfully operated, even in the cold North American climate. This paper will discuss available options and provide insights for selecting a suitable method for a given situation using case studies from projects conducted by Golder Associates around the world over the last decade.

A study on the feasibility of mining the recently discovered Wallaby gold deposit is due for completion by mid-2000. Open pit mining is the favoured method. Determination of the impact of mining bench height on the recovery of ore, including the estimation of dilution and ore loss, is critical to the economics of the operation. Conditional simulation was used to derive a number of gold estimation scenarios within a typical volume of the deposit. These scenarios were interrogated for a selection of mining bench heights and ore block dimensions. The results were reported as a range of grade tonnage relationships and compared to the kriged resource model. This allowed the resource model to be calibrated to a specific mining bench height and ore block size. Once calibrated, more realistic dilution and ore loss values for a number of mining bench heights were calculated from the resource model. These values were then used to determine the economic sensitivity of particular mining methods. The spread of results from the simulations also provided an indication of the confidence in the kriged grade estimates for the different zones of mineralisation within the deposit and highlighted areas of any significant uncertainty.

Substantial efforts by the industry, as well as by process and equipment designers, have resulted in many innovative developments that provide cost effective reductions in water usage. This paper showcases four emerging best practices in industry including examples of recent installations. Belt press filters are a small fraction of the operating and capital cost of alternative ædryÆ tailings technologies. This gives operators who must ædryÆ their tailings a competitive advantage and makes such operations much more sustainable. The new generation of belt filter presses use less energy, produces lower cake moistures and better disposal stacking properties. The need for tailings storage facilities may be eliminated or in some cases high-grade tailings can be dewatered and sold as a low value product. Mining applications include sand tailings, sinter plant waste, coal tailings and power station fly ash. Flip-flow screening machines are proven worldwide in the dry classification of coal and other minerals, reducing the size of beneficiation plants, whilst reducing energy, water demand and media consumption. They also allow the screening of wet/sticky materials not able to be sized using conventional screens. Lamella separators are used for toxic water clarification and/or sludge thickening in many downstream metal industries with the underflow often dewatered in a belt filter press. Such low cost, high capacity thickeners could also be used instead of conventional thickeners at smaller mines. The simple and reliable continuous washing upward flow (CWUF) sand filters have been used for treatment of waste water from coal preparation plants and steel works as well as in the production of potable water. The filtered waste water from mining processes can then either be reused or discharged from site. Other installations include cleaning mine water to prevent the blocking of dust suppression spray nozzles.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake, The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18.6 lb xÇ20 per 100 lb dry coal), additions of 0.045 lb magnesium ion, 0.0026 lb separan A.P. 30, and 0.098 lb aerosol O.T., per 100 lb dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

"The mining industry is the source for the vast majority of the metal, mineral and energy resources we use on a daily basis. New deposits are discovered over time and are developed into mines before being rehabilitated – a sequence that when repeated can help contribute to the noble notion of ‘sustainable development’, despite the generic concept of mining being the unsustainable consumption of non-renewable resources. The scale of the modern mining industry is immense – from iron ore and coal to base and precious metals, modern mines are sometimes hundreds or thousands of times bigger than their long lost historic ancestors. We also live in a world with emerging and increasing demands for so-called technology metals (aka ‘critical’, ‘e-tech’ or ‘specialty’ metals) that are needed to feed the rapid growth in renewable energy (especially solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines), consumer electronics, sophisticated military technologies and super alloys, amongst other uses. These elements include the rare earth elements, indium, germanium, tellurium, rhenium, selenium, gallium and many others, most of which had few or no known uses in the recent past. Although the mining industry has been successful in developing ever larger mines and increasing the scale of production, the key issues underlying the future of the industry are declining ore grades, increased tailings and waste rock generation, the presence of toxic or other impurities, balancing the economics of primary and secondary products, stricter environmental conditions, more difficult exploration, increasing community expectations, as well as the processing of more complex or refractory ores, let alone the recent volatility in world commodity markets. Here, we synthesise our recent research on many of these various issues, focusing on the need to link all areas within the mining chain from mineral resources through mining to environmental performance in order to ensure we obtain the most out of our modern mining effort. The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. Statistical metallurgical plant trials are becoming more widespread, as a valuable tool for increasing plant profitability. Generally, a single parameter like metal recovery varies under the trial condition while all other variables such as average metal feed grade or average metal concentrate grade are equal for the two test conditions during the period of the test. Metal recovery is usually the measured variable because concentrate grade is fixed by smelter terms, and plants operate to maximise recovery at the required concentrate grade. However, in all flotation plants there is a relationship between concentrate grade and metal recovery, and under the same conditions increasing one results in a decrease in the other. At MMGÆs Rosebery Mine the zinc concentrate produced is generally above smelter specifications, so zinc concentrate grade can vary during a test. During trialling of magnetic conditioning in the Rosebery zinc circuit, the difference in both zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade were analysed. The analysis of changes in zinc grade and recovery during the trial raised some interesting questions about the relationship between concentrate grade and recovery. A paired statistical method was developed and tested to combine in each pair the change in concentrate grade and recovery in a single result that could be analysed by a paired t test. This method was found to be very sensitive to combined, varying changes in concentrate grade and/or metal recovery. The idea behind Grade Engineering is to exploit the natural heterogeneity of an orebody (spatial, temporal) in order to divert low-value waste out of the mining value chain. Essentially, this involves rejecting material at relatively coarse particle sizes (10 mm to 200 mm). However, lack of knowledge about the inherent particle grade distributions in these coarse particle size ranges limits the opportunities for optimisation. Particle grade distributions are essential for quantifying and modelling gangue liberation and yield curves. These curves can then be used to predict the mass and value flows that will go towards the accept and the reject streams. Particle grade distribution information for particles coarser than 10 mm can be collected based on chemical assays of sufficient number of individual particles. However, for smaller particles (1 mm to 9 mm), a significantly larger number of particles is required for assays. Moreover, in some cases, the mass of individual particles is smaller than the minimum mass required for chemical assaying. Also, other quantification techniques such as automated mineralogy, eg Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), require extended measurement times to analyse statistically representative numbers of particles at these size ranges. This work investigates the use of 3D X-ray microtomography to fill this quantification gap at these size ranges (1 mm to 9 mm). In-house image processing algorithms are used to estimate the mineral/metal content in each particle. Particle grade distributions, as well as density distributions, are thus produced without a minimum mass requirement and with each scan providing information about tens to hundreds of particles at a time. Mineralogical data from MLA analysis, of finer size ranges, is used to inform X-ray microtomography, so a simpler 3D mineral map can be obtained using the image intensity. Chemical assay information of the scanned samples is used to validate and correct the mineral phase segmentation.
