Large areas of ground are permanently supported on coal pillars, both in extensive old workings and current drivages in active mining operations. Continued growth of civil infrastructure is resulting in more surface development above old bord and pillar mines and an increased need for mine development beneath existing surface structures and features. The result is a greater likelihood of conflict between miners, developers and regulatory bodies. However, over the last 40 years there has also been significant improvement in the general level of understanding of pillar behaviour and stability, both in Australia and overseas. This paper examines some of the issues to be considered when undermining surface structures or undertaking surface development above old workings. The Factor of Safety (FoS) methodology widely employed for the assessment of pillar stability is reviewed, including the key geometrical, geological and statistical concepts associated with the probability of pillar failure; local and international experiences are examined and significant parameters isolated. Common concerns are addressed in the context of actual practical experience, utilising a risk management approach. Recent advances in methods for the assessment of pillar stability are put forward, along with criteria for arriving at rational design outcomes.

The association of specific plants and plant communities with soils developed over underlying superficial orebodies and mineralisation has been long recognised. It has given rise to the use of plant indicators for geobotanical exploration as a regular component of primary minerals reconnaissance where there is an undisturbed vegetation cover. That the chemical composition of indicator plants is a measure of their soil environment has further led to biogeochemical prospecting methods for minerals and its use in the mapping of underlying ore deposits. Where there is a strong surface expression of metal and metalloid anomalies, concentrations of potentially phytotoxic elements may reach a level at which they have strong selective impacts on plant populations. In such circumstances, natural selection has operated in the development of a unique flora composed of plant species and individuals with genetically-based tolerances to the stressed environment in which they continue to survive. These plants are called metallophytes. Metallophytes occur globally on all metalliferous sites, both in pristine undisturbed environments and in areas of mineral workings, ancient and modern. However, the best-developed primary metallophyte vegetation is found in the most ancient areas where there has been a long-term evolutionary impact of the underlying geology through ore weathering and dispersion of metals into the rhizosphere zone. Natural selection of metal-tolerant races of plants in these largely undisturbed areas can eventually lead to speciation and the development of an endemic regional metallophyte flora (Baker et al , 2010). Mineral wastes resulting from mining activities also allow colonisation by metal-tolerant individuals leading to the establishment of metallophyte communities. The distribution and extent of such communities is determined by regional and local factors relating to climate and substrate conditions and the availability of suitable plant resources on which natural selection can operate (Baker, 2009).The ability of metallophytes to tolerate extreme metal concentrations commends them as the optimal choice for ecological restoration of mineral wastes and metal-contaminated sites. Metallophytes have recently also spawned several novel phytotechnologies, including phytoremediation and phytomining (Chaney et al, 2000, 2005; Baker and Whiting, 2008). Action towards conserving the global metallophyte resource base is imperative because many species are under threat of extinction from new and extensive mining activities (Whiting et al, 2004). This has been identified as a priority in the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project of the Global Mining Initiative in 2002 but positive responses from the minerals industry have been slow. The last decade has, however, seen an ever-increasing interest in metal-tolerant and metal-accumulating plants, both from an academic standpoint and their use in revegetation and phytostabilisation (Tordoff et al, 2000; Baker and Whiting, 2008; Baker, 2009). Few studies have highlighted the need to conserve and develop these unique plants (Whiting et al , 2004). This presentation identifies future research needs for the conservation and exploitation of the global metallophyte biodiversity and its potential in sustainable mine closure. This paper presents a case study of characterisation work undertaken at a greenfield exploration project to provide engineering and OH&S inputs for the design of a ventilation system. The paper discusses how comprehensive early characterisation of the ambient surface and underground environment including aspects related to heat, dusts, strata gas, and geologic/mineralogical factors enables incorporation of the right ventilation and non-ventilation controls at a study level to mitigate the risks identified.

Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. The recycling of steel is a crucial aspect of the shift toward a sustainable metals industry. The emphasis on steel recycling through the introduction of the scrap based mini-mill concept is also matched with a desire for greater product quality and reduced environmental impact, which, in turn, has generated important innovations. There have been significant advances in the technology for recycling steel over the last 20 years and this paper will provide an overview of these developments and discuss future directions in steel recycling including scrap management, control of tramp elements, electric arc furnace technology and ladle metallurgy.

"Geometallurgy is a discipline that seeks to improve the sustainability of the extraction of metals and minerals by promoting the smarter use of non-renewable resources, better energy efficiency and greater use of renewable energy. To achieve these goals, development of innovative technologies and approaches are being developed along the entire commodity value chain, starting with exploration and extraction and extending to reuse and recycling. This paper discusses the geometallurgy of industrial minerals with special emphasis on kaolin, a versatile industrial mineral applied in ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, rubber, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, ink, sealants, adhesives, sanitary ware, glass fibre, toothpaste, animal feed etc. Aspects of kaolin extraction in south-west UK are analysed from a geometallurgical perspective. While geometallurgy already features in kaolin extraction, its role can be significantly expanded by combining advanced in-pit characterisation and orebody modelling with integrated planning and control of the refining and calcination process. New structural studies in the Walker Fault Zone of eastern Arnhem Land are integrated with basin-wide reconnaissance observations, made to refine models for the structural evolution of the McArthur Basin and provide new insights into the nature of metal logenetical ly important pre-inversion phases of the basin's evolution. At least five principal events may be identified during the Proterozoic: The Tawallah Group and equivalents were deposited throughout the McArthur Basin during an extensional event. Rifting of an incipient Batten Trough occurred at this time, in a terrain characterised by orthogonal, linked extensional faults. Uplift and erosion of the Tawallah Group accompanied continuing extension and was penecontemporaneous with continuing deposition of the overlying Parsons Range Group, within a precursor to the Walker Trough. Dt (of the Walker Fault Zone) relates to a new rifting event, penecontemporaneous with deposition of the McArthur Group and its equivalents in the Walker and Batten Troughs. This rifting accompanied dextral strike-slip faulting along northerly-trending bounding faults, as a result of northwesterly-directed oblique extension, leading to pull-apart basins. D2 inversion of the Batten and Walker Fault Zones pre-dates deposition of the Roper Group. In the proposed model WNW-ESE directed shortening (D2.), accompanied by folding and thrusting, and by local development of cleavage in the Walker Fault Zone, is seen to be followed by northerly-trending sinistral faulting (D2b), about a SE to ESE-directed compression. D3 is basin-wide and post-dates the Roper Group. It is characterised by conjugate faulting and folding about ENE to NE-directed compression. The latest Proterozoic event to be identified (D4) comprises widespread north-trending strike-slip dextral faulting of Roper Group, coupled with N-S directed thrusting across the Urapunga Fault Zone and Murphy Inlier This is accompanied by late dextral reactivation of NNW to NNE-trending faults in the Walker and Batten Fault Zones.

This is an integrated geology and plant improvement study arising from the heterogeneity seen in mineralogy and gold association at the Obuasi goldmine in Ghana. This heterogeneity comes from the two ore types mined, the one being a sulphide ore, mainly composed of gold-bearing arsenopyrites. This gold is refractory and exhibits a strong relationship between gold and As. The other is quartz veins, that are high grade and free milling. The installed circuit consists of comminution – Gravity -Flotation – BIOX – Leaching and Adsorption processes. The opportunity tested involved improved mass pull - related flotation recovery of Au in the Sulphide stream; while balancing the need for a minimum Sulphide grade for the Bio-oxidation process, occasioned by the removal of 25 to 30 % of the (quartz) stream through preconcentration by Ore sorting. The current circuit is then utilized for the sulphide route, while a smaller grind-gravity circuit is utilised for the quartz stream in a relatively inexpensive way, followed by a common leaching and adsorption circuit. Added advantages of the strategy includes faster recovery of gold from the quartz stream, with less consumption of reagents from saving on flotation and BIOX reagents for this stream. Screening and Ore sorting was successfully tested with laser technology, achieving over 98% separation of quarts (containing up to 40% of the gold). The plant schedule of Ore, the suggested circuit design for the Ore sorting, the results obtained from the different flotation regimes, as well as consequent financial modelling have been presented and discussed in this paper. This illustrates the opportunity that arises out of a detailed analysis of material versus installed circuits, even if the gains in pre-concentration do not necessarily involve rejection of gangue material. An added opportunity for future investigation, briefly discussed but not tested in this paper, would be to maintain current mass pulls but with increase in throughput (by the space created by the sorted material). This will of course require the mining ability. It could also add LOM value by altering the cut-off grade.

This paper provides an overview of these results, with particular emphasis on new results from Arnhem Land.

This paper presents a waste rock treatment and rehabilitation program conducted at a metaliferous mine site in northern New South Wales from 2000–2013. It updates findings from 2005 for Program #1 (which examined acidity, leachable metals and tree growth in a control and three treated areas of waste rock) and includes new results for Program #2 (which examined acidity, plant uptake of metals and trace elements and tree growth in a control and four treated areas compared to undisturbed background levels) and Program?#3 (which examined the treatment and revegetation of submerged mine tailings and an exposed tailings beach).Program #1 showed low soil pH in the control area remained unchanged from years 1–14, and soil pH in the limed and capped areas was initially increased but fell back to starting levels within 12 months and remained low for 14 years. In contrast, soil pH in the Terra B area resulted in soil high pH immediately after treatment and increased in years six and 14 without further treatment. Tree height and density in 2005 and again in 2013 indicated acidity in the control, limed and capped areas suppressed tree height and density; however, in the Terra B area, revegetation in 2013 was comparable to undisturbed forest. Outcomes in the control, biosolids and three Terra B areas in Program #2 were similar to those observed in Program #1.Program #3 showed the submerged and exposed tailings initially had low pH and high concentrations of total and leachable metals before treatment, but these became non-leachable after treatment with Terra B. Revegetation was achieved on the tailings beach, with almost uniform colonisation of bulrush and common reed, along with bottlebrush and golden wattle; a variety of reptiles have also been observed on the revegetated tailings beach, along with migrating ducks, spoonbills and grebes.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Scutts, T, ?2014. The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

Exploration for uranium in Australia has so far discovered reserves equal to 17.5% of the Western World's. The Australian uranium industry, when fully developed, will be one of the largest producers and possibly the largest exporter in the world. The world's nuclear industry is young, rapidly developing in size and technology and is subject to more social, political and regulatory controls than any other industry. This paper considers the probable development of Australia's uranium industry against a background of normal commercial parameters together with other factors which are peculiar to the nuclear industry. As the theme of this conference is "Australia's role in the World Mineral Indus- try" this paper concentrates on the commercial and practical aspects associated with the development of Australia's uranium resources in a world context.

Gallery Stoping, an old but little used stoping method, has been reintroduced to workings at the Paringa South Shaft.Orebodies which are amenable to such a method are being mined in this manner with considerable advantages and savings.The advantages of gallery stoping as used at Paringa, compared with traditional mining methods are:1. constant cash flow2. low set up cost and initial stope development3. nearly 1005 recovery 4. no access problems 5. quicker tonnagesAs compared with highly mechanized mining methods, it has been found to be slower but requires less development, gives improved grade control, has less impact on the surrounding rock and fragmentation is much better, reducing secondary blasting costs.This paper examines the mining method and illustrates the advantages of gallery stoping at Paringa.

Ok Tedi Mine is located eighteen kilometers from the Irian Jaya border in the Star Mountains, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Sequential flotation concentrators produce a copper / gold concentrate for market, and a pyrite concentrate for environmental containment, with low sulphur tailings from the pyrite flotation sequence being discharged to river. Strict sulphur assay targets are set for the riverine discharge. Current porphyry and skarn ore blends from open pit operations at Mt. Fubilan will cease by 2017. However, drill cores indicate an economic ore body in the skarn ores surrounding and below the current pit limits. With proposed mining from a western pit wall ‘cut back’ and an eastern pit wall underground operation, potential for ore ageing in sub level cave underground stockpiles is apparent. With little information in the literature, Ore Ageing test work at prefeasibility level consisted of multiple one tonne stockpiles of -50 mm crushed rock. For the bankable feasibility study, a successful test work program was implemented utilizing 40 tonne ROM ore stockpiles composed of exposed pit extensions of future ores. Realistic ageing profiles of Skarn ores were obtained from one tonne monthly samples subjected to laboratory testing. Test work outcomes included:• Similar ore ageing profiles from both the pre feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility study (FS) programs, suggesting ore susceptibility to oxidation has greater effect in ore ageing than rock size for Ok Tedi skarns. • Laboratory rougher flotation of pyrite showed significant variation in sulphur recovery rate, suggesting three classes of pyrite floatability.• Laboratory rougher flotation of both copper and pyrite for up to 19 months ore ageing from 11 stockpiles, suggested three stages in the ore ageing process.

The availability of fundamental thermodynamic data and advanced thermodynamic tools greatly assists in evaluating these complexities and their impact on existing and new processes. In addition, it is fundamental to support the economic performance of smelters. This paper describes several examples on how fundamental work can be applied to industrial processing..

Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The paper discusses the results of field investigations.

BHP Iron Ore Ltd's Mt Whaleback is the largest single open-pit iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Northwestern Western Australia. A division of BHP Minerals, one of three core businesses of Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd (BHP), BHP Iron Ore - Newman is a joint venture with minor participants C Itoh Minerals and Mitsui. Mine planning for Mt Whaleback generates detailed sequence plans for a long term forecast incorporating equipment requirements, marketing forecasts, and pit development strategy. Utilisation of several computer packages, both commercially available and site modified, are necessary to achieve such a demanding task.

"Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Variography can be used to estimate the variance of the lot mean for different sampling modes.Gy also defined weighting error, which is made if a simple average is calculated from the assays of samples taken from a continuous object (eg from a process stream) where the flow rate varies with time and is correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the stream.The effect on sampling uncertainty of the three sampling modes and their interaction with the following factors in estimating the uncertainty of the mean concentration is studied using simulated lots, and lots having heterogeneity patterns similar to those of real data sets, including the effect of: the type of heterogeneity (random, grading and clustered heterogeneity patterns) increment size and number employing composite sampling weighting error. On-belt analysers have been used since the early 1980s in the coal sector to measure ash content in real time for diverting material on conveyors to remove waste, bypass beneficiation and allow suitable material to proceed to the wash plant for processing. Since 2008, a GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser has been used on an overland conveyor in South Africa to divert direct-shipping quality iron ore to bypass a jig plant. This paper focusses on recent evaluation work to determine the suitability of an on-belt analyser to upgrade the processing plant feed in a copper-gold operation.Copper-gold ore samples from New Gold’s New Afton Mine near Kamloops, BC, Canada were tested to assess measurement accuracy over short time increments. A two-minute measurement increment has been used in the minerals sector as a compromise between good measurement accuracy and a useful tonnage (haul truck equivalent size or smaller). At New Afton, this increment represents approximately 35 t of material. Segregation decisions are currently made after visual and sometimes analytical determination, at increments of approximately 500 t to designate material as ore or waste at the drawbell in the cave.Results of test work including the composition range and expected accuracies by element are shown. The operation, which is not mine constrained, was evaluating the potential for ore upgrading through waste and low grade increment diversion to upgrade ore quality feeding the mill. Prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was considered as the company recognised that it would measure through the full conveyed cross section continuously and produce multi-elemental measurements unaffected by particle size, dust, moisture content, layering and segregation, mineralogy and belt speed.GEOSCAN analyses over various analysis periods will be collected to identify variability in the conveyed material quality and used to generate tonnage-grade curves so that an optimal diversion (bulk sorting) tonnage increment can be determined. Australia is presently the world's principal producer of rutile and zircon, and also provides a major share of the world's ilmenite. Since 1980, Australia's share of the world's output of these minerals has fallen. Exhaustion of known resources, together with the changing composition of new deposits, is expected to result in Australia's share of the rutile and zircon output continuing to decline. Its role as a major supplier of upgraded ilmenite, that is synthetic rutile, is expected to increase. In 1994, the Bureau of Resource Sciences assessed Australia's demonstrated resources of mineral sands as follows: rutile 14.4 Mt, ilmenite 132.5 Mt, and zircon 21.0 Mt. These resources are located along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales, in the Murray Basin of New South Wales and Victoria, in the southwest corner of Western Australia, and in the Eneabba region, north of Perth. However, some 45 per cent of rutile and zircon resources along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales are not available for mining because of environmental concerns. World demonstrated resources are estimated at 40 Mt (contained TiO2) for rutile, 50 Mt for zircon and approximately 312 Mt (contained T1O2) for ilmenite. Outside of Australia, the most important resources of rutile, ilmenite and zircon are in South Africa (rutile, zircon , and ilmenite in the form of titania slag), Sierra Leone (rutile), India (ilmenite, zircon and rutile), and Canada (hard rock ilmenite). Significant resources of ilmenite occur in Madagascar and Mozambique.
