During more than 100 years continuous mining of the lead-zinc orebody at Broken Hill, an immense amount of geological data has been collected about shear zones related to the orebody. The challenge to current mine geologists is to synthesise and interpret these data sets in a way that is applicable to production demands. Precise knowledge of the locations of major shear zones is important not only for the determination of ground conditions but also to develop an understanding of ore remobilisation along these structures. Traditionally, geological information has been collected from drill core and back and wall mapping underground, and interpreted on sections that are approximately 20 m apart. The recent introduction of MaptekÆs Vulcan software has enabled the shear zones to be modelled in three dimensions. The new three-dimensional shear models have been combined with seismic data from the Southern Cross area. The seismic data is collected from a microseismic monitoring system installed in the Pasminco Southern Operations in August 1996 (Rauert and Tully, 1998). The addition of seismic information to the shear zone models has led to a greater degree of certainty about the shear zone locations and has provided information about shear zones in areas yet to be drilled.

A sample of tailings from a local, low grade (less than 2g/t) tailings dump was investigated for gold recovery. The tailings were very fine, with 90 per cent passing 30¦m and almost 60 per cent passing 10¦m. Tabling the coarse product from classification using a cyclone proved unsuccessful, with low recoveries being obtained due to high gold losses in the slime streams. Gold recovery by cyanide leaching was quite rapid, with recoveries of 85-90% being obtained in five hours. Lime and cyanide consumptions were 3 g/t and 0.1 kg/t respectively. Gold loading onto carbon was inhbited by the presence of the large amount of fines, so heap and vat leaching should be considered where the gold is recovered from a clear pregnant solution. Settling tests were conducted on tailings. It was observed that the addition of at least 3 kg/t lime or 0.4 kgh nonionic flocculant was necessary to promote settling of the tailings to generate a clear supernatant for gold and water recovery.

The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand own and operate an opencut mine supplying coal to on-site power stations at Mae Moh, 600 km North of Bangkok. The mine is being expanded from an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes per year in 1982 to over 9.5 million tonnes per year by 1991. The mine will be amongst the largest open pit operations in the world. It is technically difficult to operate and plan due to complex geology, weak strata and surface constraints including reservoirs, forests and traditional villages. This paper presents a case study of mine planning for the above project including associated collection and processing of geological and geotechnical information. The existing operation is described, as well as the strategy adopted for the mine at expanded production. The planning covers various phases of mine planning including a Conceptual Study, a Definitive Study and detailed short term planning. Each stage incorporated new information and reflected a higher level of confidence in the data and resulting plan. Sophisticated computer techniques were required including geological modelling, calculation of volumes, geotechnical analysis, scheduling and costing. The planning was undertaken on site by a team of Australian and Thai Engineers as part of the Thailand-Australia Lignite Mines Development Project which is a four year programme of assistance funded by the Australian Government.

Controlling unwanted ground movement is critical in mining as well as many other highly hazardous environments, such as construction and tunnelling. Sharing knowledge about effective hazard management is paramount to improving health and safety and operational outcomes across industries, and some industry sectors have embraced this openness as part of the way that they do business. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program funded the RISKGATE project to build a body of knowledge for managing a broad range of hazards across mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure within a mine-life or product life cycle perspective (eg from exploration through to decommissioning, or design through to operation). The RISKGATE body of knowledge was assembled from Australian coal industry experts through a semi-structured bowtie analysis-based action research workshop cycle. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE serves to provide a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper presents an overview of RISKGATE topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, ground control open cut, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, tailings dams and inrush) with a summary of individual topic structures, as well as showing the contrasts and inter-relationships between these ground management topics. The online user can access information about the causes, controls and consequences related to a priority unwanted event (ie the point at which control of energy is lost) and use this information as a prompt for the development of risk assessments, incident investigation, audits of practice/plans/procedures and for training and development.The paper concludes with a discussion of how RISKGATE can be adapted to other mining domains (eg coal outside of Australia, hard rock mining worldwide, construction, tunnelling) and the opportunity for application of this body of knowledge and the RISKGATE action research process for knowledge management in other highly hazardous environments.CITATION:Kirsch, P, Hebblewhite, B, Sprott, D, Harris, J, Li, J, Shi, M, Whittaker, B, Galvin, J M, Bergin, P, Mitra R and Williams, D, 2014. An integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study of the phase equilibria in the FeOFeO1.5- SbO1.5-SiO2 system in equilibrium with liquid Sb and Sb-Ag metal has been undertaken to develop thermodynamic model of the Na-Si-Fe-O slag system with S-Sn-Sb-Pb-As minor elements based on the experimental investigation of the selected sub-systems. New experimental phase equilibria data at 575–1600°C were obtained for this system using high-temperature equilibration of synthetic mixtures with predetermined compositions in sealed silica ampoules, Fe3O4 basket in sealed silica ampoule, or Re foils, a rapid quenching technique, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis of the equilibrated phase compositions. Experimental results on phase equilibria in the Fe-Sb-Si-O+Sb metal system obtained helped to produce initial set of model parameters in the slag. The primary phase fields of quartz/tridymite/cristobalite (SiO2), 2 high-SiO2 immiscible liquids, olivine (Fe2SiO4), wustite (FeO1+x), spinel (Fe3O4), schafarzikite (FeSb2O4) and valentinite/ senarmontite (Sb2O3) were identified in the binary Sb2O3-FeO, Sb2O3-SiO2 and ternary FeO-Sb2O3- SiO2 systems. Further refinement, particularly the distribution of excess Gibbs energy among the ‘FeO’-Sb2O3-SiO2 and ‘FeO1.5’-Sb2O3-SiO2 interactions, required the study at more oxidising conditions. Oxygen potential was increased using an inert metal (Ag) rather than using the gas flow due to the high volatility of Sb-containing gaseous species. Liquid Ag-Sb alloys with low concentrations of Sb of a few percent were used. At these conditions, the concentration of AgO0.5 in slag was below 1 mol per cent, which had a small effect on observed phase equilibria in the system. In addition, important information on the solubility of silver in slags is produced, which can be valuable when treating electronic recycling materials or primary silver-containing ores through the Pb process. Two main areas were addressed: the spinel-tridymite boundary (40–70 per cent SiO2 in slag) and spinel liquidus near 15 per cent SiO2 in slag. This allowed to deconvolute the separate contributions of the FeO-Sb2O3(-SiO2) and Fe2O3-Sb2O3(-SiO2) systems.

Mount Leyshon is an open cut-heap leaching operation that commenced production in early 1987. Open pit reserves are 6.3 m.t. grading 1.8 g/t Au and 4.8 g/t Ag and expected annual production is 68,000 oz. of gold. Gold mineralisation is hosted in breccias, porphyry plugs and basement rocks interpreted as the roots of a multi-phase Permian phreatomagmatic breccia complex. Mineralisation has the form of veins, cavity fillings and disseminations and is localised by late stage trachytic dikes and sills and dike-like bodies of milled breccia in the northwest corner of the complex. The sequence of mineralisation includes: I quartz-chalcopyrite-molybdenite stockwork veins and pyrite-gold veins with potassic alteration II quartz-chlorite-carbonate-basemetal sulphide-gold veins and cavity fillings with sericitic alteration III quartz-basemetal sulphide-bismuth-sulphide -electrum veins, veinlets and dissemin- ations with sericitic alteration. Mineralisation is interpreted to have formed at 500-300¦C from a predominantly magmatic hydrothermal system related to the porphyry intrusive bodies. Mount Leyshon is a phreatomagmatic breccia with a very different origin to the Kidston magmatic hydrothermal breccia. However the mineralisation style and origin is quite similar.

In the UK during the 1990s the energy companies had developed a policy of æDash for GasÆ, building large natural gas power stations to produce more than 30 per cent of the UKÆs electricity demand. The price of imported thermal coal was dropping and the electricity generators were putting pressure on the UK coal producers to produce coal at a reduced cost. Imported coal from Columbia, South Africa, America and Australasia had increased their market share in thermal coal sales to over 50 per cent of a 55 Mtpa market. The pressure on the UK coal industry to reduce costs and improve productivity levels from an ever decreasing resource was high. Companies were benchmarking their operations on the imported coal producers and had to realign their organisations, productivity levels and costs to world best practice, not just technically, but in world class organisational management techniques.

Sulphur dioxide oxidation is an attractive alternative anodic reaction to the evolution of oxygen in copper electrowinning. Accordingly, the electrochemical oxidation of SO2 in aqueous 1.0 x 10-1 mol/L NaClO4 has been studied at pH 2.3 using platinum and glassy carbon electrodes. On the platinum electrode SO2 oxidation occurred on the forward scan at 0.96 V and on the reverse scan at 0.63 V. For GC, a single SO2 oxidation peak occurred at 1.40 V on the forward scan. SO2 oxidation on both electrode substrates was hampered by oxide layer formation. The electrode could be reactivated however, by oxide layer reduction. Although reactivation was most successful for platinum, SO2 oxidation on platinum is quite complex, with this evidenced by the reverse scan anodic peak. Glassy carbon shows simpler behaviour and thus, is the preferred substrate for SO2 oxidation.

The company requires representation that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to its operations and people, the safety and health of the community and environment, and most importantly, represents the decision makers. Stakeholders need to believe that the engagement process is genuine and that the company representatives are aligned towards targeted outcomes that will benefit all stakeholders in some way.Among others, stakeholders include shareholders, staff, families, community, service and supply providers, regulators, land managers and the political/financial framework. Depending upon the mineral product, stakeholders may include ports, international offtake clients and those along the route. New stakeholders continually evolve during mine life, and the engagement process requires an investor–community–public relations (IR/CR/PR) team to anticipate change and actively scan perception and chatter.Successful communication is more than delivering a message; it is about engaging stakeholders and confirming the feedback loop to ensure the correct message is communicated and the relationship is strengthened.The nature of the mining company’s branding and the public’s perception of company intentions will dictate whether there is willingness to allow the company to follow its desired path. In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

The Martha deposit in Waihi, New Zealand, is a giant adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit that formed 6.0 to 6.1 Ma, and has produced over 6.4 Moz gold and 39.9 Moz. Fluid inclusion analyses were undertaken on a limited number of vein samples from Martha. The results from this eight week student project are preliminary but agree with previous studies. There is little variation between primary and secondary inclusions and between different vein types, except that homogenisation temperatures of the inclusions in sphalerite grains are on average 20¦ to 30¦C higher than the average quartz vein values. Overall the temperatures of homogenisation ranged from 182¦ to 258¦C and final ice melting temperatures ranged from 0.0¦ to 2.8¦C. Unusual black inclusions were also found associated only with the ginguro bands. Some of these appear to be solid sulphide inclusions but others are not so clear.

The properties of top slags play a very important role in secondary steelmaking. Fluxes should be chosen based on the ladle furnace (LF) slag requirements like viscosity, melting temperature, sulfide capacity, etc. CaF2 and CaO-Al2O3-based synthetic slags are the most used fluxes in secondary steelmaking to improve slag fluidity and interfacial chemical reactions. CaF2 is obsolete due to fluorine pollution and CaO-Al2O3 based slags have 40–50 wt per cent Al2O3 and 30–40 per cent CaO which is not beneficial for desulfurisation. Yet another drawback is that LF slag disintegrates into fine powder during cooling due to phase transformation C2S (2CaO.SiO2). Hence, there is a need for the development of low melting fluxes with high CaO content and the capability to prevent slag disintegration. The current work studied the effect of 0–9 wt per cent B2O3 on physico-chemical properties and characterisation of LF slags. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were carried out to identify mineralogical phases present in slag and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was done to understand the changes in bonds of B2O3 added LF slag. The characteristic temperature of slag was determined by a hemispherical method using high-temperature microscopy. Empirical models were used to calculate viscosity, break temperature, and sulfide capacity. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by GTT-Technologies) simulations were carried out to find the equilibrium phase fractions and percentage of liquid slag at different temperatures. New phases such as Ca11B2Si4O22 and Ca2B3O5 were formed in LF slag with B2O3 addition. Based on the results, 0.5–1.0 wt per cent B2O3 was found to be sufficient to prevent C2S-driven disintegration of LF slag. Also, the melting temperature and viscosity of LF slag were reduced by adding 3–8 wt per cent B2O3 due to the formation of BO3 planar triangular structure and low melting eutectics in slag. Liquid slag started forming at a temperature as low as 800°C when B2O3 is >6 wt per cent. It was found that the sulfide capacity, viscosity, and break temperature of the slag decreased with increasing wt per cent B2O3. Based on the analysis carried out, B2O3 can be a promising fluxing material in secondary steelmaking, for improving the desulfurisation kinetics and valourisation potential of LF slag.

The results of a geostatistical analysis of geochemical data obtained from field measurements are described in the paper. Q values derived from seismic signal rise times for different travel paths in the rock masses were used in the study. Cross-hole seismic measurements made at surface and underground sites formed the basis for the work. Geostatistical estimation of average l/Q values for area of the rock were compared with geological interpretions of rock type distributions. Reasonable correlations were obtained between the two methods of rock quality estimation.

"This paper presents a case study demonstrating active geotechnical pit slope management at the now completed Carina Iron Ore Project operated by Mineral Resources Ltd (MRL). The site is located 105 km north-east of Southern Cross, Western Australia. The paper is primarily focused on the slope stability failure modes and the remedial measures employed to maintain mining.Between a quarter and a third of the excavated slopes were impacted by some form of instability that was beyond expectations of the intended slope design criteria and common practice. Ongoing mining was supported by intensive geotechnical pit slope management including close cooperation between geotechnical, mine planning and operations staff to achieve timely and practical mining solutions.Mining encountered varied slope failure mechanisms which required a combination of remedial solutions comprising: horizontal depressurisation holes, deferral of excavation, unloading, buttressing and catch berms.The root cause of the challenging slope performance was a mismatch between the predicted and encountered geotechnical model, resulting from a failure to recognise the critical mechanisms that control slope stability.Despite the extensive zones of instabilities at completion of mining, full ore recovery was achieved without major delays and in a controlled and safe manner.Citation:Fowler, M, Strang, D and Jaine, R, 2016. The Kanowna Belle deposit was discovered in 1990 following encouraging assays from soil sampling and RAB drilling. At the end of September 1993, diamond drilling had been completed to a vertical depth of 1,000 metres and a resource of 22 million tonnes grading 5.73 grams of gold per tonne containing a million ounces of gold had been defined. The deposit remains open at depth. Pre-production mining for the open pit began in November 1992, construction of the oxide treatment plant began in January 1993 and the first gold was poured in September 1993. Sulphide ore roasting commenced in December 1994 and the underground mine development commenced in July 1995. The Kanowna Belle project is owned by the Golden Valley Joint Venture (GVJV), an unincorporated joint venture with equal shareholdings between North Gold (W.A.) Ltd and Delta Gold N.L. North Gold are the managers of the development and operations and Delta Gold are the managers of exploration throughout the GVJV tenements.

The Sirosmelt top submerged lancing system has many applications in the smelting of base metal and complex materials. It has particular advantages for smaller scale smelting and the treatment of recycle materials in smelters where its low capital and operating costs and its operational flexibility are of immediate benefit. The system can be fueled by oil, gas or coal, as well as by mixtures of fuels. For many applications, the use of coal as a fuel has operating cost advantages over oil and gas, but conventional pulverised coal feeding systems entail very large capital expenditure and this militates against the use of coal. The methods available for improving on conventional technology for coal firing of Sirosmelt systems are discussed and operating experience with alternative systems are outlined. The use of coal as a reductant in the Sirosmelt system is also discussed.

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014.
