Aberfoyle's Hellyer Division has filtered very fine flotation concentrates using two different makes of pressure filter. At the Luina concentrator a Larox pressure filter was used to treat a combined Pb + Zn or bulk concentrate. At the Hellyer concentrator two Lasta pressure filters are being used to filter copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Operating parameters and performance at both operations are described. In both concentrators it was found that correct cloth selection was critical and that cloth failures contributed significantly to downtime. Thorough preventative maintenance progammes were required to ensure adequate availability of both makes of filter.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

It has always been a challenge to accelerate the underground development progress by increasing the advance rate of each development round. Surveys have shown that most of the development rounds have only been pulled 84 per cent to 94 per cent of the drilled length. Where bare detonators have been used as primers, less advance rate is expected. In order to obtain a good understanding of the influence of priming upon the advance rate in underground development, a series of high energy primer trials has been conducted by Orica Explosives in the goldfields using various types of Orica high energy Anzomex « primers. It has been shown that development face has been pulled an extra 140 mm to 420 mm by priming with Anzomex « K primers compared with conventional primers. From all the trials at different sites, we have seen that the face pulled using K primers was more square than that pulled using conventional primers. Virtually, no butts and toe were left on the face developed using K primers. Computer simulation has been conducted using either a conventional primer, a bare detonator or a K primer as initiator. The study compared the predicted crack patterns developed around the toe of the hole and it was deducted that a detonator-initiated hole would leave a butt some 200 mm longer than that from a conventional primer-initiated hole, and a K primer-initiated blasthole would give rise to stronger initial p-wave, promoting crack development around the toe and increasing the ability to pull close to the full depth.

The performance of a system for detecting the onset of overloads on rod mills is described. The system has bee,, tested at CODELCO E1 Salvador Concentrator where, due t,, variations on size distribution of the copper ore feed, th' rod mill is frequently subject to overloads. The main inpur signal to the system is the rod mill sound, after being measured and analog conditioned. This signal and othe signals measuring the fresh ore feed and the mill watt addition are fed to a computer containing a simpl mathematical model. The model parameters are empiricall estimated and an analog output signal is generated, whic gives an early prediction of the overload condition. The experimental results described in this paper show that the overload condition may be predicted with an anticipation of about three minutes.

An integrated approach is advocated, combining functional purpose designed foundations and structures to serve their mechanical, electrical and environmental functions. Dry bulk and slurry handling are also compared in perspective.

An alternative stoping method has been adopted for narrow vein stoping at the Tasmania Mine in Northern Tasmania. Colloquially described as ‘Radial-in-Reef’ (RiR) stoping, the method employs the drilling of radial rings in the plane of the Reef from a drill stub located at the geographic centre of the proposed stope panel.Production from the Western Zone of the Tasmania Reef has been undertaken remotely from the Reef since 2007, after a detailed geotechnical engineering analysis indicated that the integrity of the sill drives could not guarantee an acceptable level of confidence should an anticipated seismic event occur within a radius of 10 m. The key tenet of the remote mining approach was the exclusion of personnel from sill drives once stoping had commenced. The remote mining method had to be ‘retrofitted’ to four existing stoping blocks totalling 11 sill drives which totalled 160 m vertically. The remote mining method proved to be complex, cumbersome and very expensive. However, the ore was extracted successfully.By early 2010, previously developed ore had largely been exhausted and the future development with an orebody open at depth presented the opportunity to review the current extraction method. However, the new extraction method needed to maintain the tenet of excluding personnel from sill drives of active stoping blocks, but seek opportunities to reduce the difficult and costly aspects of the previous method. The new ‘Radial-in-Reef’ stoping reduced the development requirement from six to two drives per ore block. Cost implications aside, the significant reduction in prestoping extraction ratio was expected to also reduce the likelihood of seismicity. Transverse production rings were designed to be drilled radially from a drill stub mined from a mid-stope footwall drive. Stopes totalling up to 7000 tonnes were planned be fired in a single electronic blast. Extraction was designed to take place from a basal sill drive under teleremote operation. At the time of writing, the method was under trial.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

"Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success. This case study describes the human factors issues associated with the introduction of automation generally, and describes a case study of the successful implementation of loader automation at Northparkes mine.Information obtained through a site visit and interviews with operators, safety staff and the project manager revealed the following strategies for successful design and implementation of the automation system: involve the people who will be impacted encourage constant communication between operators and designers provide operators with essential information avoid providing non-essential information provide the operators with flexibility empower operators to take action take advantage of the new possibilities automation provides.CITATION:Burgess-Limerick, R, Horberry, T, Steiner, L and Cronin, J, 2017. Tourmaline-bearing rocks are a rare rock type of Suites 3, 4 and 5 at Broken Hill. Minor laminated plagioclase-quartz-tourmaline rocks occur in association with the quartz- magnetite rocks of Suite 3 with the greatest abundance of tourmaline-bearing rocks present in Suite 4 intimately associated with lode horizon, scheelite mineralisation and zinc mineralistion - all approximate strike equivalents of the Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Ag deposit. Bedded quartz-tourmaline rocks, tourmalinites, tourmaline-rich pelite and tourmaline-bearing lode horizon have been recorded from suite 4. The bedded tourmaline rocks rarely display cross bedding, graded bedding, slump structures and small scale intraformational breccias. Minor tourmaline-gahnite-bearing pelites are present in Suite 5. The sedimentary structures, metamorphic textures, the stratigraphic position of the tourmaline-rocks and the presence of quartz-tourmaline-gahnite-spessartine (-fluorapatite) lode rocks indicates that the mineralisation at Broken Hill and the tourmaline-rich rocks are all products of submarine exhalative hot spring systems which were most active during deposition of Suite 4 rocks. Tourmaline is chemically different from that associated with granitic activity and from other submarine exhalative tourmaline-rich rocks because the premetamorphic alteration at Broken Hill involved addition of Fe, Ti and F and subtraction of Mg - a feature reflected in the chemistry of tourmaline from Broken Hill.

Solids suspension is important in the design and operation of mechanical flotation cells, and is a necessary precondition to particle collection. Most of the fundamental hydrodynamic research that incorporates some aspect of solids suspension was done by Arbiter, Harris, and co-workers, or Schubert and co-workers. However, a need for research into solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells exists, since very little has been done since the late 1980s; a time that also coincides with the advent of round mechanical flotation cells and the subsequent dramatic increases in maximum flotation cell sizes. In this work, concentration profiles and critical impeller speeds, Njs, were measured in a 0.124 m3, round cell fitted with a 0.150 m, Bateman impeller mechanism. Two solids size fractions (75 - 106 and 150 - 250 ¦m) were tested, in ungassed and gassed conditions (JG = 0, 1 cm/s) and at various impeller speeds (300 - 900 rpm). The effectiveness of solids suspension was quantified in three ways in terms of extent of off-bottom solids suspension, suspension height (extent of solids distribution), and variation within the solids distribution, which together present a complete quantitative picture of solids suspension and distribution within the cell. Consistent trends were found when these effectiveness criteria were considered against relative impeller speed, in terms of percentage of critical impeller speed, N/Njs. Off-bottom solids suspension is complete at or above 100 per cent of Njs, with significant sedimentation occurring as the impeller speed drops below 60 per cent of Njs. Suspension heights consistently reached a level equivalent to 90 per cent of the tank diameter at the critical impeller speed, and dropped off significantly as N/Njs dropped below 60 per cent. The variation in the solids concentrations within the sampled profiles showed consistent trends in two-phase but not under three-phase conditions. The paper concludes that the critical impeller speed, Njs, commonly used in the design and operation of standard stirred tanks, is a very useful solids suspension benchmark for describing all aspects of solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells and should be correlated to system conditions.

This contribution summarises new knowledge and data, obtained during a three year ARCAMIRA funded research project, on the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal alteration associated with low sulfidation, gold-silver epithermal deposits. These data are used to develop exploration vectors for use at both deposit and district scales, plus techniques have been established to distinguish ore grade epithermal systems from barren or low grade systems. Deposits investigated were Ladolam, Papua New Guinea, Gosowong and Mt Muro, Indonesia, Cerro Vaguardia, Argentina and Bimurra and Twin Hills, Australia.

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. An important problem in rock engineering is to control the properties of artificial rock. A compaction technique for casting artificial rock specimens with controlled properties is described, i.e. using a compression-testing machine to compress the mixture. Uniform density is necessary to achieve uniformity of properties of the specimens, and uniform density can be obtained by using the specific pressing method presented. Rebound and borax content are important to the technique and have been studied as well.

The Jameson flotation cell was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited and Professor GJ Jameson of the University of Newcastle. The cell has been used in a number of cleaning applications within Mount Isa Mines Limited. In 1989 Peko Mines tested the Jameson flotation cell at the Warrego concentrator to upgrade recleaner concentrate. 2 x 1.4 m diameter Jameson flotation cells were installed in 1990. This paper describes the testing, commissioning and operation of these Cells.
