Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) developed a new construction method (the M-2 method) that could drive a long, curved small-diameter tunnel (4>1.2 m) without human labor. This method employs the cast-in-place lining system, using quick-hardening resin mortar, so that it can greatly increase the driving distance and execute both long distance driving (longer than 500 m) and curved driving with a radius of curvature of 200 m. Furthermore, the central control system with a mini-computer in a vertical shaft enables all work in a small-diameter tunnel, i.e., excavation, lining, and transportation of excavated soil and materials, without human labor. NTT conducted several field tests and a Practical Application Test (P.A.T.) under a public road bearing great traffic. Good results were obtained and the practicability of this method was demonstrated. Therefore, from now on, NTT will apply this ii-2 method to drive telecommunication cable tunnels in urban areas. This method will also be applicable to constructing public tunnel facilities, such as for water, sewage, electricity and gas.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

Porphyry-Cu (Mo-Au) deposits and iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits are both characterised by the presence of abundant halite-saturated fluid inclusions that reflect the circulation of hyper-saline hydrothermal brines. While it is widely accepted that brines involved in the formation of porphyry copper deposits derive from unmixing of moderate-salinity, intermediate-density fluids that exsolve from crystallising magmas, the source of brines that form IOCG deposits remains enigmatic and intensely debated. In this extended abstract, we summarise the fluid inclusion characteristics of both deposit types and present trace element compositional data for halite-saturated fluid inclusions from both porphyry copper deposits and IOCG deposits from around the world.While both deposit types typically contain halite-saturated fluid inclusions, vapour-rich fluid inclusions in IOCG deposits are less common than in porphyry deposits and evidence for fluid immiscibility is rare. IOCG deposits also typically lack intermediate-density fluid inclusions that characterise the deeper quartz-rich veins in many porphyry deposits. Many IOCG deposits contain CO2-only fluid inclusions, a type of fluid not observed in porphyry Cu deposits.Our fluid inclusion compositional data show that most porphyry Cu (Mo-Au)-related brines are dominated by Na, K and Fe and contain elevated concentrations of Ca, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn up to around the one per cent level. On the other hand, IOCG brines are Na-Ca-Fe-dominated and typically contain far less Cu, Mn and Zn than porphyry brines. In addition to Ca, these fluids are also strongly enriched in Ba and Sr relative to porphyry-related brines. Such compositions are consistent with extensive fluid-rock interaction and/or an evolved sea water contribution to IOCG brines.A sea water or basinal brine source for IOCG brines is further supported by bromine concentrations that are much higher than is characteristic for porphyry-related brines. Porphyry brines have Cl/Br molar ratios of between 800 and 3000, which is characteristic of primary magmatic brines, whereas the Cl/Br composition of IOCG brines is more variable. For example, Na/Cl/Br ratios of most IOCG deposits in the world-class Carajás district fall on or near the sea water evaporation curve (most Cl/Br molar ratios are between 200 and 1000) and are diagnostic of sedimentary bittern brines. A few of the deposits in this district also show evidence of the input of subordinate amounts of magmatic brine. At Ernest Henry, in the Cloncurry district of Australia, most Cl/Br ratios plot close to the sea water evaporation curve, but Cl/Br ratios of up to ~5000 in several samples suggest the input of lesser amounts of magmatic fluids, and possibly evaporite-dissolution-derived fluids. Taken together with geologic constraints, these data strongly suggest that porphyry-type deposits form from the circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids, while IOCG deposits form from large-scale circulation of high-salinity fluids sourced dominantly from sedimentary basins with variable input of magmatic volatiles.CITATION:Rusk, B, Emsbo, P, Xavier, R P, Corriveau, L, Oliver, N and Zhang, D, 2015. Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. Barrick Gold Corporation is proceeding with development of the Buzwagi Mine in the Lake Victoria Greenstone Belt District of Tanzania. The Buzwagi orebody occurs in the Nzega Shear zone within the Greenstone Belt and is hosted in a K-Feldspar rich granite in contact with mafic volcanic. The orebody presents 2.6 M ounces in 41 Mt of reserves, at 2.0 g/t. Over the ten year mine life, total material movement will be 261 Mt. The feasibility study was completed in 2006 and presented several technical challenges. Two principle challenges are grade control and the impact of dilution on the economic viability of the project. The principle challenges for grade control will be quality control and quality assurance in the sampling of the massive coarse grained granite, which comprises 70 per cent of the deposit. The principle challenge with dilution will be with the selective mining of the narrower mineralised zones contained within the mafic volcanics. This paper will focus on the mine planning methodology which has been applied including selective mine unit (SMU) and dilution estimation, net smelter revenue (NSR) calculation and the effects of cut-off grades to the project economics and mine schedule.

The Tampakan deposit is a strongly telescoped high-sulphidation-epithermal/ porphyry deposit pair which is hosted by a sequence of probable Pliocene age subaerial andesite flows. These host units lie on the western flank of a deeply dissected andesitic stratovolcano within the northernmost portion of the Sangihe Arc in southern Mindanao. The deposit was discovered by WMC geologists in 1992 and is currently undergoing resource evaluation. Preliminary resource estimations indicate a total inferred metal content of 12 million tonnes of copper metal and 16 million ounces of gold. Using a 0.2 per cent Cu cut-off grade, the deposit has a current mineral resource of approximately 2.5 billion tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.48 per cent copper. At a higher cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Cu, the mineral resource is approximately 900 million tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.75 per cent copper. Mineralisation is open both to the west and at depth. The Tampakan district is centrally located with respect to a 100 km wide zone of left-lateral strike-slip deformation represented by the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The district is transected by several WNW-striking wrench faults which represent strands of the regional Cotabato Fault Zone. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation within the Tampakan deposit is strongly controlled by NNE-trending faults which lie along a dilational orientation within the Pliocene stress field associated with the Cotabato strike-slip fault zone. The mineralisation is broadly hosted by a gently-dipping, tabular zone of partial to massive silicification which displays multi-phase brecciation, acid-leaching, related vuggy porosity and which is developed within a district-scale advanced-argillic and argillic lithocap exceeding 90 km 2 in area. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation is associated with a silica-pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore¦sericite alteration assemblage which is transitional downward to sericite-chlorite alteration and relict potassic biotite-chlorite-magnetite-anhydrite alteration associated with pervasively developed but weakly mineralised porphyry quartz stockwork veins. The high-sulphidation mineralisation is dominated by disseminated, vein and vug-filling enargite-bornite-digenite-chalcocite-covellite ¦ molybdenite which has overprinted an earlier phase of porphyry copper stockwork veins associated with high-level porphyritic hornblende diorite stocks. The distribution of high-sulphidation alteration and mineralisation reflects strong stratigraphic and structural controls. The high-sulphidation mineralisation covers a surface area of approximately 1.6 km by 2.0 km and forms a tabular, flat-lying to gently-dipping body between 200 and 500 metres thick. It is intersected at RL-1200 m ASL (at surface) in the northern portion of the deposit and extends down to RL-600 m ASL at the southern end. The deposit has been diamond-drill tested to a depth of 400 - 500 metres where low-grade chalcopyrite-bornite-pyrite mineralisation is hosted by pervasive quartz stockwork veins. This deep-level mineralisation represents the outer portion of a porphyry Cu system hosted by both andesite flows and the uppermost portions of high-level hornblende diorite stocks. Deep drilling to test for higher tenor porphyry Cu mineralisation is planned.

The introduction of legal certification of mine managers is a matter of history. It was introduced as part of legislation for mine safety. It has been said that such legislat- ion was written in blood. Like all legislation this legislation is divided into three sections; commands, obligations and sanctions. While legislation in all States on this subject is similar, the differences are great enough to have prompted the preparation of a Uniform Code by the Annual Conference of Chief Inspectors of Mines. This Uniform Code has not been adopted fully by any State to date. Legal certification of mine managers has made managers more aware of the requirements of the legislation covering their industry, legislation that reads as a summary on past accidents and methods of preventing them. While budding managers spend considerable' time in their early years in the preparation for certification, history has shown that the industry has benefited from their efforts. A better knowledge of the safety acts by the managers has produced safer operations, and a higher standard of management has raised the technical standards of mining operations to a stage where Australia can be proud.

The paper discusses the state of the progress reached in the development of the diamond wire tool for cutting hard rocks. To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables on tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been Elucidated.

Parallel lenticular orebodies occurring at the C.S.A. mine of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. are mined by mechanized cut and fill stoping over the full strike length. Access is provided for each stope lift from an inclined drive adjacent to the orebody. Mobile drill jumbos mounting hydraulically-operated booms are used for drilling upholes which are subsequently charged with ANFO explosive.Close control of drilling has been found essential for good back conditions and to ensure optimum fragmentation.Broken ore is transported from the face to the main ore pass by rubber-tyred, diesel-powered, load-haul-dump units. Initially, the units trammed ore to the main pass via the incline drive. As the stopes advanced and the lead distances increased, stope passes were developed in the wall rock and raised concurrently with each stoping lift. The passes terminate in drawpoints and production loaders are used to transport ore from the drawpoints to the main ore pass system.Two parallel ore pass systems have been developed to cater for both copper and copper-zinc ores. These systems terminate above a 48 in. by 60 in. jaw crusher. The crushed ore is conveyed to a traversing rock box and thence to one of two crushed ore bins adjacent to the main hoisting shaft. A loading station conveyor is interlocked with the winder to provide automatic ore hoisting.All phases of ore handling have been mechanized as completely as possible. Results to date indicate this policy has been vindicated but highlight the need for tight operating control and close liaison between operating and maintenance personnel.

The effect of multiple tunnels /cavities on the stress and deformation field of the soil media was investigated by using a two dimen- sional plane strain boundary element model. The soil was considered as an elastic, isot- ropic and homogenous media. The interaction of two circular and parallel tunnels/cavities was investigated. Depth of burial, tunnel spacing and surface load width were the system variables considered. The results of this study indicated that the vertical displacements of the soil media increases by decreasing the distance between the adjacent openings, the interaction between the two tunnels/cavities can be neglected for K/D > 5, while the load width has a minor effect except in the dis- tance of D from the center line of the load and for a depth of 2D.

For many years, in numerous settings, the need for a language-fair and culture-fair assessment test has been identified as a significant issue for employment and selection for training of remote indigenous community members. Pivotal to the successful implementation and application of such a test is for it to gain the acceptance and trust of the local indigenous communities as a fair assessment and for it to provide organisations with an accurate predictive tool. However, when western tests have been used with indigenous groups, inherent language and cultural bias have had a significant negative impact in terms of community acceptance. These have also affected the accuracy of performance predictability. The Queensland Test was developed to overcome these problems. Originally developed for use in Papua New Guinea, it reduced training failures by 20 per cent. Later refinements were made and it was used with Aboriginal Australians. Since 2002, assessment tests have been used by the Freeport mine in West Papua to support their recruitment, selection and training processes for the local indigenous community, the Seven Suku Tribes. The initial process included the application of standard æwesternÆ assessment tests, which did not provide valid selection predictions, with community members and elders describing these tests as unfair and the organisation being concerned that the results were not accurate. A trial of the Queensland Test was conducted and a high correlation was established between the performance of FreeportÆs current Seven Suku employees as assessed by their managers and their Queensland Test results. Based on the results of this pilot the Queensland Test was successfully implemented as the primary selection tool for potential employees from these local indigenous groups. The testing materials and method gained community trust and support, with tribal elders describing the Queensland Test as a fair and suitable selection tool for their community members. Such results have sparked an interest within the Australian Mining industry, with similar results being reported from a recent trial. The Queensland Test has been implemented at a major site in Queensland and is being investigated for use elsewhere.

As more than a few mines gradually sink under the weight of emails, whiteboards, notice boards and ever more complex spreadsheets, the holy grail of effective short-term interval planning and control in underground mines is as far away as ever. Despite the mining industry investing ever greater amounts in planning and Enterprise Resource Planning systems, short-term plans become ever more complex and rigid. What the industry desperately needs are not more ‘disembodied voices down the speaking tubes’, but flexible and effective planning systems that encourage people to make reasonable commitments to each other so that everyone can work as a coordinated team to complete the work required each shift.One solution to the challenge has emerged. This paper describes the ‘Fewzion’ shift planning and short interval control system which has been developed at Anglo American’s Moranbah North and Glencore’s Oaky Creek coalmines in Central Queensland. Fewzion has drawn on management theory embodied in Management Operating Systems, Lean and Theory of Constraints approaches to continuous improvement to play a key role in both mines achieving record breaking tonnages.In addition to explaining the Fewzion approach, a case study is presented describing how Anglo American’s Moranbah North improved production by 39 per cent in 2014/2015 and won ‘Coalmine of the Year’ two out of the last four years and how Glencore’s Oaky Creek sustainably improved monthly development meters by 34 per cent within two months of implementing Fewzion.CITATION:Moynagh, P and Britton, G, 2017. In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. It also discusses how the fund will be managed into the future and what this will mean for both abandoned mine features across Western Australia and any future abandoned mine sites.CITATION:Leybourne, M L, 2014. Declining from surface provides access, haulageway, ventilation and provision for ser- vices for stoping and development. Three boom jumbos and 3.8 m3 capacity diesel loaders are used in decline development, the majority of which is driven at a gradient of 1 in 9. Primary ventilation is drawn from the mine through raisebored airways and high pressure contra rotating fans provide secondary ventil- ation. To meet schedules a special decline crew was formed on similar lines to a mining con- tractor. The basis of payment for the mining party was changed and the net effect was to accelerate development. Ground conditions demand constant support and this is achieved with chemical anchor rock bolts, multistrand grouted bolts and shotcrete. Major local shear zones are encountered and when they are to be driven through, a combina- tion of the above methods, involving a spiling technique, is used.

Many transport tunnels show distress after few decades of construction. Owing to exorbitant cost of replacement, rehabilitation of tunnels has become inevitable and rapidly gaining attention/significance worldwide. This paper discusses the detailed planning and design of remedial measures for repairs and rehabilitation of the twin tube highway tunnel in India, at an elevation of 2200 m constructed approximately 38 years ago. The tunnel length is 2547 m having 30 m2 cross-sectional area of each tube. The tunnel is lined in stretches, totalling 60 per cent lined and the remaining portions are unlined. The tunnel has developed acute problems of rock falls, water leakage, distressed pavement and icicle formation resulting in slow movement of vehicular traffic which has also increased. Suffocation inside the tunnel caused deaths due to inadequate natural ventilation, hence artificial ventilation was deemed necessary and was provided in the restricted 28.5 m2 cross-sectional area of tunnel. The paper would be useful for planners, designers and construction engineers for setting future trends.

"Falling commodity prices and a rising supply surplus have ushered in a period of restraint in capital project investment across the global mining and metals sector. Competition for capital project funding has seen fewer projects progress through investment gates and a stronger focus on projects that deliver gains in capital productivity and strategic outcomes.Over the course of the 2015 financial year, EY conducted a study of 108 projects in the global mining and metals sector (EY analysis; Larsson and Ericsson, 2014; SNL Financial, 2015). The projects studied were at various life cycle stages and related to the development of copper, iron ore, gold, coal, nickel and other commodities. Each individual project investment exceeded US$1 B, and the studied group represented a cumulative investment value of US$367 B.The research found that the majority of projects were delayed and/or over budget when measured against the initial estimates made during the early stages of the project life cycle. Of the surveyed projects, 69 per cent were identified as facing cost overruns with an average overrun of 62 per cent above the initial estimate and 50 per cent reported schedule delays, even after remedial acceleration initiatives.The analysis found that budget and schedule overruns could be attributed to five key causes:project management factorsstakeholder conflictsresource constraintsregulatory, and policy-related challengesunfavourable external environment.Improving project delivery performance starts with successful planning, followed by rigorous management during delivery. This study addresses a widespread problem confronting the mining industry: the deleterious effect of clay minerals in flotation. This problem is seemingly exacerbated by the presence of iron contamination from grinding media. The interaction of clay minerals and grinding media in copper and gold flotation was investigated in this study. A low-clay ore and a high-clay ore were obtained from Telfer to represent different contents of clay minerals, while stainless steel and mild steel grinding rods were used to produce different grinding chemistry, in particular, iron contamination. Flotation tests on an unsized and sized basis were conducted to reveal how clay minerals and grinding media affect copper and gold flotation. Iron contamination and the oxidation of copper minerals were quantified by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) extraction. It is interesting to find that both clay minerals and iron contamination depressed the flotation primarily in fine particles smaller than 33 ¦m, and clay minerals played a dominant role. Although flotation of coarser particles greater than 33 ¦m was less affected by clay minerals and iron contamination, coarser grinding to increase P80 was not an effective way to improve copper and gold flotation for the high-clay ore. This study suggests that to improve copper and gold flotation from clay ores, clay dispersion in conjunction with the minimisation of iron contamination may be required.CITATION:Wei, R, Peng, Y and Seaman, D, 2013. Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations.
