Secondary microplaty haematite in its variety of styles and generations is the defining component of the high-grade banded iron-formation (BIF)-hosted iron ores of the world that are dominated by martite (M; - haematite pseudomorphs after magnetite). The term microplaty haematite (mplH) was introduced during the CSIRO-AMIRA 1976-1994 iron ore program, and was used to differentiate the then main export martite-microplaty haematite (M-mpl H) ore types of Tom Price-Whaleback and Paraburdoo (Paleoproterozoic), from the newly exploited, more prolific supergene martite-goethite (M-G) ores (Mesozoic-Paleocene) of the Hamersley Province that are now the major Hamersley iron ore exports.Morris (1980, 1985) suggested that the most important genetic factor that distinguishes the two main ore types was regional metamorphism of Paleoproterozoic M-G ores at temperatures normally related to diagenesis (ca 80 - 100°C). As temperatures increased, mplH grew in goethite both spontaneously as well as by nucleating on martite and other pre-existing haematite. Because the conversion of goethite to haematite involves a ~27 per cent reduction in volume, the crystals probably grew within microvoids of their own creation, with iron transfer through water resulting from the process itself, a local hydrothermal process requiring no introduced hypogene fluids.Barley et al (1999) and Taylor et al (2001) concluded instead that oxidation of introduced siderite in hydrothermally metasomatised BIF ‘protore’ resulted in mplH + ankerite by reaction with heated meteoric fl uids. This postulated ‘protore’, still preserved locally at Mt Tom Price, was described during the CSIRO-AMIRA program as local post-ore BIF metasomatic residuals. These new hypogene-meteoric concepts for M-mpl H genesis have formed the basis for a range of varying local and international models that currently dominate the literature of iron ore.No valid petrographic data supporting the hypogene-supergene modelling was found but petrographic images of goethite-related mplH growth in a range of different environments are shown.

The development of a design-and-construct tunnelling project in Australia from its concept to its construction requires designs to be prepared and reviewed at several distinct stages prior to documenting ‘for construction’. On recent projects the post-tender stages have been variously called 30 per cent—70 per cent—100 per cent; or concept–substantial–final; or system definition–preliminary–critical. The design is reviewed at each stage by the designer’s internal reviewer, the contractor and its independent advisor(s), the owner and its independent advisor(s), the project’s independent certifier, proof engineers and often third-party stakeholders and their advisors. Documentation for each stage often dominates the design effort, at times distracting from design. This paper presents the authors’ experience of this design-and-review process. Comparisons of design budget and actual design spend and design program implications are presented. It is postulated that a subtle change has occurred in our industry that has diminished the value of the design dollar. Is there a better process? The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. The Mesozoic iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation in southern Perú and the northern Chile coastal IOCG belt have emerged as two of the major exploration targets in the Central Andes in the last two decades. These Mesozoic Andean IOCG deposits formed in two mineralisation epochs, the Middle-Late Jurassic (170–150 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–110 Ma), with the major Cu-rich IOCG deposits located in the Early Cretaceous mineralisation belt. The early studies in some IOCG centres support a magmtic-hydrothermal model for both Cu-rich IOCG deposits and broadly contemporaneous Cu-poor ‘Kiruna-type’ magnetite deposits. However, recent evidence from field, geochronology, fluid inclusions and stable isotopes show that in the major Central Andean deposits (eg Raúl-Condestable, Mina Justa in southern Perú, La Candelaria-Punta del Cobre and Mantoverde in northern Chile), the incursion of evaporite-sourced basinal brines or sea water may be a prerequisite for economic Cu mineralisation. Moreover, the Cu-poor massive magnetite deposits could be interpreted as a product from iron oxide melt, with minimal intervention by non-magmatic fluids. Therefore, they could represent two contrasted deposit types and contain little genetic relationships. The different roles of magmatism during the Mesozoic are responsible for the variable mineralisation in the Central Andes, including IOCG, magnetite and ‘manto-type’ deposits. The ore modelling for both the Middle-Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous metallogenic epochs in the Central Andes are reconstructed.CITATION:Chen, H, 2015. A 328 m, 2.4 m diameter raise-bored shaft has been equipped with a modular ladderway system to provide a second means of egress from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Mine in Tasmania. The modular ladderway consists of platforms, ladders and service pipes assembled at the surface and progressively lowered down the shaft. This system provides a rapid, safe and economical non-entry approach to equipping a shaft. The modular construction and single suspension allows for future extension or for reuse in another shaft.

Thiourea leaching has been applied to a refractory gold concentrate previously treated by bacterial oxidation. Following the bio-oxidation, gold has been leached in acidic thiourea solutions, under different pH(1 - 2.4), thiourea concentrations (2 - 15 g/1), ferric ion concentrations (0.04 - 3 g/1) and temperatures (298 - 333 K). Through this procedure, it was possible to increase gold extraction from 40 to 77 per cent. The increase in temperature raised gold extraction and reduced reagent consumption. Sodium sulphite addition was also very effective in lowering thiourea consumption. Staged leaching operations with interstage acid washing and carbon-in-leach experiments were tested, in an attempt to increase gold extraction. The results of thiourea leaching were compared with those obtained with cyanidation.

The surface-to-inseam (SIS) directional drilling technique has been utilised at Oaky Creek Coal for more than a decade to predrain both the Oaky No 1 and Oaky North mining areas. The cumulative drilling program constitutes a total of 140 lateral and 200 vertical holes, and 405 km of lateral drilling.The use of SIS gas drainage has been successful with the following site-specific benefits being recognised:ability to drain German Creek seam gas contents to residual gas levels of new mining areas within an 18-month period from commencement of well productionstructural geological verification of the mine design well in advance of development mining occurring in an areaability to conduct successful predrainage of the overlying Aquila seam to reduce subsequent goaf emissions.Appropriate and up-to-date geological knowledge during the design and drilling process is a significant influence to achieving success. Vertical production wells need to be located in a position that is most effective to remove water from hole. The lateral hole should not include intersections with significant geological structure.SIS drilling provides continuous seam roof/floor data to help define seam geometry and locate geological hazards with high accuracy. In faulted ground and with variable seam gradients, SIS data can resolve geological ambiguities from seismic sections and enhance seam correlation that would otherwise be available only from discrete and closely-spaced infill vertical exploration drilling.Here, we review some examples of SIS configurations and practice to highlight key learnings in drilling long inseam holes (up to 1900 m per arm) ahead of development and mining. A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The potential synergy between chemometrics and TOS is far from exhausted at this time; much work remains.CITATION:Esbensen, K H, 2014. The stratiform and vein-type pyritic silver-Iead-zinc-copper sulphide deposits of Sunny Corner, NSW are hosted by acid volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks of Middle Silurian to Early Devonian age. The rocks have been subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism (prehnite-pumpellyite facies) and three phases of folding and four faulting events are recognised. Pyrite is intensely fractured, indicating brittle deformation. Chalcopyrite and galena exhibit deformation twins and slip planes indicating ductile deformation; sphalerite and chalcopyrite show straight and curved grain boundaries and dihedral angles of 120° as evidence of annealing recryslallisation. Sulphur isotope ratios for 22 samples from five deposits range from 1.7 to 10.7 per mil and average 7.4 per mil. Sulphur isotope data are similar to those from other stratiform sulphide deposits in acid volcanic rocks of Late Silurian age in the eastern Lachlan Fold Belt, especially Woodlawn and Captains Flat and together with other features of the mineralisation, suggest a volcanic exhalative origin for the Sunny Corner deposits.

Over the last 15 years Indonesia has experienced a surge in coalexploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings.

WaihiÆs Cornish Pumphouse is located on the edge of town in a dynamic and changeable area where history affects the future. As in any successful project, ingenuity and team work have been significant factors in the planning and implementation of the buildingÆs relocation.   Work around the Pumphouse site commenced circa 1900 with preparation to sink the No 5 shaft. Construction of the pumphouse and the steam driven C pump was completed by 1904 with hints of what was to come evident in 1905 as the No5 Shaft collar had sunk 350mm in four years. By 1907 surface cracking developed over the Milking Cow cave area and in 1913 200 mm was cut off the main pumping rod as the ground was sinking at a rate of 25 mm per year.   In 1913 ground around No 6 shaft had subsided 600 mm.It was also the end of an era as steam gave way to hydroelectricity and electric pumps replaced the C Pump. C Pump was maintained as a backup from 1913 to 1929 and then finally scrapped. 25 years of underground caving operations removed approximately 400 000 cubic metres of ore leaving a 7 ha collapse crater that eventually became known as the mine lake.   On the edge of town a tension zone over the Royal Lode began to develop 50 m diameter chimney collapses as large scale blocks relaxed into unfilled stopes in the old Martha underground mine. After the 1999 collapse part of the main street was closed and after the 2001 collapse Hazard Zones were declared, more streets closed and areas evacuated and retired from residential use.   By 1984 the Pumphouse has approximately one degree of tilt and in 2002 tilt on the Pumphouse accelerated briefly and then settled down. Tilt accelerated again late in 2004 and a scoping study was initiated to define protection options for the pumphouse. The Martha Mining Licence requires Newmont to 'Take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the old Cornish Pumphouse adjacent to No5 shaft' and viable solutions needed to found.   Any work on the Pumphouse comes standard with a wide range of stakeholders, governing agencies and legal framework to consider. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is owner and administrator of the pumphouse.

A gold mine in southern China has transitioned from an open pit operation to a fully underground mine. An overhand mining method is used which requires the mined stopes to be filled with backfill having an unconfined compressive strength of at least 0.35MPa. Tailings from the process plant is deposited into separate flotation and Carbon in Leach (CIL) tailings storage facilities. The tailings has a high fines content and the thickener on site could only produce a dilute flotation tailings at a solids content of about 30 wt%. This resulted in two undesirable outcomes: the density of flotation tailings in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was significantly lower than planned so that the TSF could not store the life of mine tailings and that the backfill product had to include a high percentage of manufactured aggregate and increased cement content to achieve the required strength. This paper presents results of a tailings study which identified that the flotation TSF would be capable of storing the remaining life of mine tailings if an amended backfill product made up of 100% of flotation tailings could be introduced. A 100% tailings backfill with the addition of 8% cement was developed by classifying the tailings and using the coarser fraction in the backfill. This backfill allowed 60% of the flotation tailings to be placed underground and only the remaining 40% in the flotation TSF. A new thickener was designed and installed to thicken the tailings and rheological testing of the tailings, using a closed loop pilot plant, provided parameters to upgrade the underground reticulation system to deliver cemented backfill to stopes throughout the mine and to deliver thickened tailings to the TSF. The successful re-opening of the Cobar min- eral field was dependent upon the success- ful introduction of highly productive, low cost mining. Mechanised cut and fill stop- ing with incline access was selected for the C.S.A. mine because it permitted flexi- bility, complete primary extraction with no secondary pillar recovery, minimised dilu- tion and oxidation, a minimum of pre-pro- duction development and because diesel powered load-haul-dump (L.H.D.) units were proving reliable and highly productive in the U.S.A. Although L.H.D. vehicles are the key to the success of the mining method, four other main groups of vehicles are utilised in the mine - trucks, scaling vehicles, ser- vicing vehicles and specialist vehicles. The operating requirements at the C.S.A. mine are more stringent than those encount- ered in many other underground mining oper- ations. The first L.H.D. vehicle used at Cobar - the Transloader - had considerable difficulty in loading and discharging coarse production ore. The Wagner ST5 Scoop Tram performed this duty much better. However, the first generation Scoop Trams were not robust enough to withstand the heavy duty and many modifications were necessary before acceptable availabilities were obtained. Similar modifications were necessary for the Eimco 916 vehicle but the Eimco 915 unit came much closer to meeting the duty requirements. Eventually Cobar technical personnel design- ed a L.H.D. vehicle to meet specific C.S.A. mine conditions. These units have proven most satisfactory. Over 8 years of operation the underground vehicle fleet has become a proliferation of vehicle types. A standardisation pro- gram has been initiated based upon common prime movers being mated with "trailer" units to serve specific functions. Standardisation will reduce inventory levels and facilitate training of operating and maintenance personnel.

Subaqueous water-rock reactions that occur at the pit wall/lake water interface can affect the pH of pit lakes. Many pit lake water chemistry models neglect subaqueous reactions, which may create inaccurate predictions over time. A mineral quantification method is presented that defines the wall rock mineralogy of active open pit mines, using samples collected from the Martha Mine, a low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit in Waihi, New Zealand. The mineral quantification method has five components: field observations and sampling, X-ray diffraction analyses, selection of representative samples, geochemical analyses, and mineral accounting. Predicted mineral concentrations closely match observed mineral concentrations visually estimated using petrographic techniques. Results of the method can be incorporated into a geochemical model of long-range pit lake water quality resulting from subaqueous water-rock reactions.

In this paper, the kinetics of iron precipitation as sodium jarosite from aqueous solution is investigated. The determination of the reaction mechanism is attempted based on the experimental data of iron removal as a function of time, without using the characteristics of the precipitate.Experiments at the temperature range from 50° to 95°C were carried out with initial conditions of iron concentration IQ g/L, sodium sulphate concentration 25.44 g/L, sulphuric acid concentration 3.68 g/L, pH = 1.5 and agitation rate 600 rpm. Temperature greatly and positively influences iron precipitation from the solution and this is accompanied by pH decrease. The activation energy was determined using the maximum values of the precipitation rate, which were evaluated by polynomial fitting of the sigmoidal shape experimental curves, and it was found to be 44.37 kcallmole. The determination of the rate-controll ing mechanism was based on some criteria used for the discrimination among the three probable mechanisms of precipitation (diffusion, mononuclear nucleation, polynuclear nucleation). These criteria utilise various funetions of the recovery 'a' of iron precipitated versus time, the most important of which are the chronomals. The results of the kinetic analysis procedure showed that the polynuclear nucleation growth mechanism controls the precipitation of iron as sodium jarosite. This was confirmed by the high value of activation energy, excluding diffusion as the controlling mechanism.

The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O. These features indicate that Phase 2 skarn and Cu-Au (REE-U) mineralisation may be related to unexposed intrusions at deeper levels.CITATION:Sha, P, Spandler, C and Chang, Z, 2015. Laboratory scale flotation tests were done on mineral hematite and aspecular hematite ore using oleic acid and sodium oleate as collectors. The mineral hematite floated strongly in the neutral pH region, with an increased pH range of flotation at higher oleate additions. Concentrates with sufficient hematite grade to meet the paint pigment specification were produced using oleic acid and sodium oleate as hematite collectors on the specular hematite ore. Hematite recoveries of 70 per cent at 60 per cent Fe grade were obtained using stagewise roughing. The interaction between hematite and oleate was confirmed as chemisorption but the exact mechanism could not be determined, as two independent phenomena can be used to explain the fact that the pH of maximum grade increased with increasing oleate addition.

The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.
