The Mt Tom Price deposit is a world-class high-grade hematite deposit in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia with an original resource of 900 Mt of almost pure hematite, averaging 63.9 wt per cent Fe. Petrological and geochemical studies at both the Southern Ridge and the North deposit at Mt Tom Price have identified three hypogene alteration zones between unmineralised BIF and high-grade iron ore: distal magnetite-siderite-stilpnomelane; intermediate hematite-magnetite-ankerite-talc-chlorite; and proximal martite-microplaty hematite-magnetite-apatite alteration zones.Fluid inclusions trapped in siderite within the distal magnetite-siderite- stilpnomelane alteration zone at the North deposit revealed primary high salinity (25.5 eq wt per cent NaCl-CaCl2) inclusions that homogenised between 107¦ and 142¦C into liquid. Fluid inclusions trapped in ankerite within ankerite-microplaty hematite veins in the intermediate hematite-ankerite-magnetite-talc-chlorite alteration zone at the North deposit revealed mostly H2O-CaCl2 pseudosecondary and secondary inclusions with salinities of 22.4 - 25.4 eq wt per cent and 22.9 - 25.9 eq wt per cent CaCl2, respectively. Pseudosecondary inclusions homogenised between 153¦ and 449¦C and secondary inclusions homogenised between 103¦ and 157¦C. Fluid inclusions trapped in apatite within talc-microplaty hematite veins in the intermediate hematite-magnetite-talc-chlorite-apatite alteration zone at Southern Ridge revealed that primary, medium salinity (7.0 - 9.0 eq wt per cent NaCl) inclusions homogenised between 181¦ and 257¦C and primary high salinity (22.8 - 25.9 eq wt per cent CaCl2) fluid inclusions homogenised between 118¦ and 257¦C into liquid. Microthermometric analysis of quartz from quartz-hematite veins from the Southern Batter Fault, Southern Ridge show a complex fluid inclusion history. Primary fluid inclusions consist of: low- and high-salinity H2O-NaCI inclusions trapped at temperatures of approximately 140¦ to 230¦C; vapour-rich inclusions of unknown compositions; and æcomplexÆ salt-rich (Ca, Mg, K and Na inclusions).Secondary inclusions consist of medium-salinity fluid inclusions trapped at temperatures of about 140¦ to 280¦C.A two-stage hydrothermal model is proposed for the formation of both the Southern Ridge and North deposits. Early 1a hypogene alteration involved the release of hydrothermal NaCl-CaCl2-rich (25.5 eq wt per cent) basinal brines (110¦ - 150¦C) from the underlying Wittenoom Formation and directed upward along normal faults and focused within the silica-rich rocks of the Dales Gorge Member, by the shales of the underlying Mt McRae Shale Member and overlying Whaleback Formation. Within the Dales Gorge Member hydrothermal basinal brines migrated laterally within large-scale folds with permeability controlled by shale bands and the NW trending dolerite dyke sets. Fluid rock reactions transformed unmineralised BIF to magnetite-siderite-iron silicate BIF, with subsequent desilification of the chert bands. Stage 1b hypogene involved an increase in temperature of the hydrothermal, CaCl2-rich saline (24 eq wt per cent) basinal brines (250¦ - 300¦C) resulting in formation of hematite-ankerite-magnetite-talc-chlorite alteration and the crystallisation of microplaty hematite. Late stage 1c hypogene alteration involved the interaction of low-temperature (~120¦C) basinal brines with the hematite-ankerite-magnetite mineral assemblage. At the Southern Ridge deposit this process was very intense (ie high fluid flux), therefore resulting in the almost total removal of ankerite and resulting in the increased porosity of the ore. Stage 2 supergene enrichment in the Tertiary resulted in the removal of residual ankerite and apatite and the weathering of the shale bands to clay.

The process of mine planning at AnacondaÆs nickel and cobalt laterite operation located at Murrin-Murrin in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia is carried out in a number of stages in an endeavour to determine the optimum mining sequence in order to maintain supply to the 4 Mtpa plant subject to operational constraints. The 296 Mt @ 0.99 per cent Ni and 0.064 per cent Co ore reserve (based on a cut-off grade of 0.8 per cent Nickel) is spread geographically widely over three regions comprising Murrin North (15 km + 15 km), Murrin South (7 km + 16 km) and Murrin East (5 km + 13 km) (refer Figure 2). The nickel mineralisation has been broken up further within each region into 18 separate manageable block models representing the 32 different deposits. The models are based initially on the 50 m + 50 m resource drilling for long term planning and updated with 12.5 m + 12.5 m grade control drilling prior to mining. Each of the individual block models are optimised using Whittle 4X software to provide the shells used as the basis for each of the 126 pit designs. The pits are generally nested with starter pits targeting the higher value shells with subsequent pits incrementally cutting back ultimately to the life of mine shells. A series of steps including: the coding of the individual pits into the block model; data export; TCL scripting (to calculate additional economic and tracking information); importing; and re-blocking; completes the transfer of the data into a MineMax (mixed integer linear programming schedule optimising software) model. Using MineMax and the application of operational and production constraints allows the optimisation, assessment and economic evaluation of alternative scenarios in order to determine the optimum life of mine plan and schedule.

Managing blasting operations in four mines surrounded by villages is a challenging task. This study aims to compare the blast-induced flyrock as observed in opencast mines by predicting flyrock distance using a soft computing approach known as an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and Flyrock Predictor software based on empirical studies. Blast design and geotechnical variables such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge, unconfined compressive strength and rock quality designation were selected as independent variables, while flyrock distance was used as a dependent variable. Out of 120 blasts, data from 100 blasts was used to train and test the ANFIS model. Flyrock distance for the remaining 20 blasts was used to evaluate the model. Flyrock distance has also been predicted using Flyrock Predictor software based on an empirical approach using the same data sets as those used for ANFIS. Performance indices like root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error and coefficient of determination (R2) were evaluated to compare the reliability of ANFIS and Flyrock Predictor quantitatively. ANFIS was found to be a better predictive tool, with 1.75 m RMSE and 0.966 R2 compared to Flyrock Predictor, which returned RMSE and R2 values of 2.48 m and 0.932 respectively.CITATION:Trivedi, R, Singh, T N, Gupta, N and Bhandari, S, 2015. OWING to the gradual depletion of the hitherto plentiful supply of firewood in the immediate vieinity of Queenstown and Gormanston, which caused a steady increase in the cost of fuel for domestic purposes, the Mount Lyell Company took steps several years ago to make available as a substitute electric current from its Lake Margaret hydro-electric supply. In order to make this practicable it was necessary that the cost of electric power for heating purposes should compare favourably with the cost, of fuel, and the installation of domestic appliances brought within reach of the average householder, and efforts have been continuously directed towards this end since the year 1928.WATER HEATERSThe installation of electrical apparatus in local dwellings began with hot-water services, the heating elements being the types then procurable on the market and adapted to meet requirements.These, however, did not prove satisfactory, but the study of their bilure resulted in a type being developed locally which has overcome all difficulties. The first type of water heater evolved was an outside circulation one the element of which consisted of an iron pipe through which the water passed, insulated with micanite and wound with nichrome wire, the latter being covered with alundun cement to keep it in position and prevent oxidation. This was insulated on its outside surface with a layer of asbestos flour, and connected to the hot-water container as shown in Fig. 1. It was found, however, that the iron pipe had a short life, due to a certain amount of acidity in the water, and a copper pipe was substituted which proved very durable. Some heaters with this improved type of element are still operating after six years of use. The resistance wire is run at a very low current density, which ensures durability.

An infra-red absorption study has been made of crocidolite, country rock. and associated host rocks from Wittenoom Gorge. The spectrum of the country rock is appreciably different from those of crocidolite and the magnetite-rich host rocks which are closely similar. A process to separate crocidolite-bearing ore from country rock based on infra-red emission is therefore possible in theory.

Principles of management in ore preparation before process of enrichment of chrysotile ores are discussed. The formulas, which were tested in industrial conditions, are offered, which may be used for averaging of chrysotile-asbestos fibres by content in ore and grade.

Gold was first discovered in the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862. He left his job as a shearer and soon there were up to 3000 miners working over the length of the river. Some parts were extremely rich and a few early miners recovered as much as 300 ounces in a day. From these early days of hand working the operations progressed through to hydraulic elevating once water races and pipes were installed after the Skippers road was completed about 1890. The riverbed was worked in paddocks with .the gravel being sluiced to a central suction which elevated the material over a sluice box. Use of this system continued intermittently through until 1977 when Joe Schieb retired û the last of the hydraulic miners. Many bucket ladder dredges worked on the lower Shotover near Big Beach where the Sew Hoy family recovered a lot of gold. Just after 1900, at least three worked further upstream, one on the beach where Shotover Jet now operates and one further up below the Moonlight. All the sections for this were transported in over the Moonlight Track and the boiler, steam engine and bucket ladder are still sitting at the edge of the river. up near Maori Point a dredge operated from Dredge Slip upstream. Records are poor on these dredges but they all suffered from the frequent floods and large boulders which damaged the bucket line. The last dredging attempt was about 1930 when a suction dredge was constructed on Maori Beach. This failed as seems to be normal for most suction dredging ventures. The river can drop to very low levels in the middle of a dry summer, and in winter when the water is tied up in the mountains as ice and snow. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 feet overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. The ever present risk of flooding dominates the method of working and plant design.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northernPaparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The project specification called for the following works to be excavated: Access Shaft:122 m (out of 140 m total depth), 6.0 m diameter (selected by the contractor),Operation Shaft:125 m (out of 150 m total depth), 4.0 m diameter,Water Curtain Gallery:500 m (Later extended by additional 270 m), 4.0 m wide and 3.5 m high,Storage Caverns:910 m, 14.0 m wide, 11.0 m high,Top Heading:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Bench:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Connection Galleries:250 m, 5.5 m wide, 5.5 m high.A total of 156 000 cubm of rock to be excavated.

A systematic, detailed airborne geophysical programme carried out in the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) in 2005 by Glass Earth NZ Ltd culminated in the identification of 21 epithermal gold targets. In this paper we present the follow up ground-truthing results from the first target drilled, Tahunaatara (TAH).   The Tahunaatara target was identified by means of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach (ôdata interventionö) that defined and ranked the target as being highly prospective for epithermal gold mineralisation. A follow-up ground resistivity survey over the target area revealed the presence of a ôresistorö buried beneath an extensive cover of recent volcaniclastic material. Geochemical soil sampling carried out in conjunction with the resistivity survey yielded anomalous gold values.   The host unit at TAH consists primarily of flow banded rhyolitic lavas, volcaniclastic deposits and tuffs of the Ohakuri Ignimbrite with small outcrops of silicified bedded breccias forming local topographic highs. Results from the first orientation drill hole show wide zones of intense silicification, clay alteration and mineralisation. Sulphide mineralisation is disseminated throughout the core in association with hydrothermal replacement and also occurs in association with quartz veins and infill in fractures (sulphide-only veinlets as opposed to quartz + sulphide veinlets). Textural evidence from drill core indicates that hydrothermal fluid flow was multi-staged with potential for multi-stage gold, and other elements. The presence of polymictic hydrothermal eruptive breccias indicates a hydrothermal vent system.   Alteration varies from argillic to silicic, with pervasive adularia and vuggy silicification also present. Chlorite is minor and associated with quartz, illitic clay and adularia. Assay results currently available confirm the presence of anomalous gold values in association with zones of vuggy silica deposition and intense silicification.

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. Currently, Kanieri Gold Dredging Limited operates the only large scale gold dredging operation in New Zealand. It dredges a claim in the Taramakau River using the bucket dredge 'Kanieri'. This dredge, a 'Yuba' type, was designed and built in the 1930s. On the current claim it works about 12 hectares of ground a year. Because of its design, the tailings from the 'Kanieri' make land restoration difficult. This was unimportant until it commenced its new claim ML-32-310 in 1978. The conditions, attached to this licence required it to restore the land for afforestation, the designated use fur the Crown land being mined. With the company planning to work future claims on the Grey River, it decided to undertake restoration work on the Taramakau to demonstrate its capability of establishing pasture land on tailings, a more difficult task than restoring the land for afforestation. After two years and the restoration of two blocks totalling 22 hectares, reasonable pasture establishment has been achieved. Much has been learned to date and further refinement of the techniques used will take place over the next two years. The quality of the tailings produced has improved as a result of the limited modifications possible on the existing dredge. This has been significant in achieving better results. The knowledge gained will be taken into account in future dredge design. Both the Company and its Consultant are confident of achieving satisfactory restoration of dredge tailings for pasture land.

It is shown that factors associated with conditions whIch are thermodynamically favourable for the formation of CuS04 in roasting lead to high copper recoveries on leaching. One of these factors is the ratio of the air to solids used for roasting. This can be varied widely without loss of temperature control in the sulphating roasting of many Australian copper concentrates.Thus, the prediction of the air to solids ratio corresponding to a maximum p(SO3) value, for a given concentrate and temperature, is of importance in fluidized bed roasting, since this could be associated with the formation of a maximum quantity of CuS04. Calculations are presented which predict this air to solids ratio, not only for a given concentrate composition, temperature, and pressure, but also for air which is enriched with sulphur dioxide or oxygen.

For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil.   Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased.   Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil's porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. The suitability of char from Yallourn brown coal as a filler for carbon electrodes used in the aluminium smelting industry has been assessed on the basis of the specifications usually laid down by electrode manufacturers for petroleum coke fillers. The purity specifications can be met by a simple acid leaching of the coal before carbonization. The true density of char produced at 1200°C is within 5 per cent of the specification figure, but the bulk density of char obtained from as-mined coal is only half that specified for petroleum coke.Although this can be increased to three-quarters of the specified figure by briquetting the coal before carbonization, further increases would be very difficult to achieve, as the remaining shortfall in density is due to an extensive microporosity developed in the particles of char during carbonization.

Mr Kapp's paper helps considerably to clarify the subsidence/mine geometry relationships in New South Wales. It is in the best tradition of the presentation of field investigations such as has built up internationalknowledge over the years.The Author has plotted in Fig. 10, the maximum subsidence developed over each of a number of panels of different width/depth ratios and concludes that the maximum possible subsidence over a super critical extractionarea is around 0.65 of the mining height and that this is reached with the critical width/depth ratio of extraction of around 1.5.Although, as Mr. Kapp says, the maximum possible subsidence in the UK can reach 90% of the seam thickness extracted the more usual figure for the first seam is up to 80%. It has also been found in the UK that with shallow workings such as those at Kemiro Coliery the critical width of extraction is 2.0 or more times the depth.

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion
