A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. CSA mine, which is a deep level copper operation, located 12 km north of Cobar, NSW, currently uses a top down stoping method, utilising cemented hydraulic backfill (CHF) to fill and stabilise the stoping void thus assisting the extraction sequence. The stope sequence then requires development back through the CHF stope so that the necessary infrastructure for the subsequent stoping, such as raise bore pads can be sited. The primary and secondary support installed in the CHF consisted of 100 mm thick fibrecrete from floor to floor with 7 + 2.4 m long resin support tendons installed at 1.5 m ring spacing. This support system relied on the resin achieving a quality bond with the CHF, and also the fibrecrete developing early structural strength due to the use of an accelerator. In addition to the delays in the excavation turn around time, it was felt that a superior support system could be designed. Such a system was designed; risk assessed, tested underground, and trialled in selective CHF digouts, and eventually signed off as the chosen support method in CHF digouts. This paper discusses the change from a passive support system used in CHF digouts to an active support system using Swellex bolts and weld mesh, which has provided an active support system, that is superior, faster to install, reduced the excavation turn around time and is overall a cheaper support system.

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

Over half of the molten aluminium produced at the 52,000 tons/ year eapacity plant operated by Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited in Tasmania is cast into saleable produets by the direct chill process. Considering the importance of direct chill casting to the aluminium industry it is surprising that so little published literature on the subject is available, although Easton (1947), Smart (1954), and Uppert (1940, 1944, 1945) have contributed much toward lifting the veil of secrecy surrounding the process.The direct chill, or D.C. process as it is commonly called when related to aluminium, consists basically of feeding molten aluminium or its alloys into; water-cooled mould from the bottom of which solid aluminium is continuously extracted. Although the casting procedure is continuous in principle, the equipment is normally operated in an intermittent manner. Castings up to 20 ft long are formed during a cycle. At the end of the cycle casting is stopped and the pit into which thc castings are dropped is cleared before a new cycle commences. Depending on the size of the casting in relation to the cross sectional area of the pit and the support mechanism (commonly a hydraulic ram), 'drops' of up to 15 tons are not uncommon. This method of D.C. casting IS termed vertical D.C. casting and is the one most commonly employed in the aluminium industry.Horizontal casting has come more to the fore in recent years with the casting being extracted from the mould in the horizontal plane and is a truly continuous casting method since flying saws can be simply used to cut the continuously cast shape into required lengths as it emerges from the mould...

A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas. In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investments in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-substitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.   The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. IT, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East.   The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

Alluvial gold deposits in the area studied are preserved on the valley floor and elevated terraces due to a sequence of glacial/interglacial events during Pleistocene and Recent times. Continued regional uplift has overprinted these events. Prospecting by drilling and bulk sampling has demonstrated a complex alluvial gold resource which is now being mined.

The material presented in this paper describes experimental work to determine the effect of variations in suction nozzle design upon inlet flow conditions. Four entrance profile shapes were examined under controlled conditions of slurry flow and it was found that the straight ended nozzles had consistently higher entrance losses than the straight taper or the ellipse, and that the circular arc profile nozzles were the most efficient. Subordinate considerations were the measurement of the quantities and the forces involved.As the work progressed, three distinct phases in the pattern of flow were apparent and the static pressures in each were carefully examined. An inlet zone was found to be unstable in changing boundary conditions, a transition zone was largely independent of slurry density and in a zone of stability the pressures were found to be directly related to the characteristics of the flowing pulp. In this zone pressure measurements were reproducible within ± 2 per cent regardless of changing boundary conditions.The effect of varying the "1" parameter of nozzles with a part circular entrance profile was examined and it was found that flow conditions approaching the ideal were obtained when the radius of curvature was between 0·40 and 0·550.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addition to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

Talvivaara deposits, Kuusilampi and Kolmisoppi, comprise one of the largest sulfide nickel resources in the world with 642 Mt in Measured and Indicated Resource categories. TalvivaaraÆs preferred extraction technology is bioheapleaching, which is already widely used for other metals, notably copper and gold. The company has demonstrated the viability of bioheapleaching technology for the extraction of nickel using the Talvivaara ore. The leaching process is heat generating and therefore suitable for the subarctic climatic conditions. The planned annual metal production is 33 000 t of nickel, 60 000 t of zinc, 10 000 t of copper and 1200 t of cobalt. Talvivaara deposits are well-suited for open pit mining due to a thin overburden, favourable resource geometry and a low waste to ore ratio. The ore is relatively low-grade, but well suited to bioheapleaching due to its high sulfide content. Bioheapleaching is a process whereby metals are leached from ore as a result of bacterial action. The bacteria used in the Talvivaara bioheapleaching process are endemic to the area and therefore well adjusted to the prevailing environmental conditions. The solution is collected at the bottom of the heaps and either re-circulated through the heap or fed to metal recovery. In metal recovery, nickel, copper, zinc and cobalt are precipitated from the pregnant leach solution and filtered to produce saleable metal products. After the metals are removed, the solution is further purified and returned to irrigate the heaps. Mining, bioheapleaching and metal recovery techniques for the Talvivaara mine have been tested in a 17 000 t on-site demonstration trial during 2005 and 2006. Subsequent construction of the mine started in 2007 and commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The Pasminco mine at Rosebery in north western Tasmania is a medium sized underground base and precious metals mine. In April 1992 a major wedge failure of approximately 5000 t occurred in the backs of a main access drive to the 18 level H Lens orebody. This collapse prevented access to 190 000 t of ore which had been scheduled for production in July - August 1992. At the time of the collapse, the mine was in a transition period between mining small pillar remnants of several other orebodies and developing to the new deeper J Lens orebody.The development at this orebody was behind schedule and it was necessary to find a cost-effective and timely alternative to a 75 m bypass drive around the fall area.A Lysaght- Fletcher multiplate steel arch was available on-site from a deferred surface road project and it was decided to use this arch to regain access through the fall area. Due to the danger of continued minor falls, the entire 18 m long, 3.95 m high x 4.5 m wide tunnel had to be assembled in the 4.7 m wide x 5 m high accesss drive and pushed into the fall area as a single unit.

The Coal Resources Survey commenced in 1974 as a search for Huntly Power Station coal, but soon developed into the most detailed regional coal search programme to be instituted in New Zealand. The program was initially conceived as geological in nature, but later included geotechnical, geohydrological, mining assessment, coal use, and environmental considerations in its investigations. The programme never undertook development work but has provided Government and the private sector with a sound basis for identifying development options. The discovery of large-scale coal resources in the Mokau, Waikato, and Taranaki regions and the lignite resources of Otago and Southland are a measure of the Survey's success. The directive by Government to phase out the NZCRS to a large extent coincides with the completion stage of the program. With most of the detailed regional study finished, it now remains to collate the data and publish summary reports at Coalfield and Coal Region level, in order to maximise the use and value of the data collected over the years.

Spectrum Resources commenced operations as a public listed mining company in August, 1983, with a variety of precious metal projects in New Zealand. At that time the outlook for most mineral commodities, with the notable exception of precious metals, was decidedly gloomy. Metal prices were depressed and demand forecasts were universally gloomy. Against this background the company reviewed the non-traditional metals sector to try and identify a 'new' metal with an above average demand growth and market value. Lithium, a commodity with exciting new applications in storage batteries and alloys, met both criteria. Annual world consumption of lithium is around 7000 tonnes; current prices are around $NZ40/lb for lithium metal and demand growth is projected at five to seven per cent per annum. Geothermal fluids at Wairakei and elsewhere contain anomalous amounts of lithium and in May, 1984, the Chemistry Division of DSIR was commissioned to carry out a literature survey on the possible recovery of lithium and other minerals from geothermal waters. The survey results were encouraging and the company subsequently negotiated exclusive access rights, for research purposes, to geothermal discharge fluids from the Wairakei and Kawerau geothermal fluids. Most of the subsequent investigations reported here were carried out by Chemistry Division, DSIR, under contract to the company with some assistance from the Industrial Processing Division, DSIR.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. Smarter Gravity Separation Using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig With relatively coarse grained and easy-to-process ore sources rapidly dwindling, smarter techniques are becoming more necessary for the continued success of mineral processing operations, while increasing environmental pressures also require more environmentally friendly solutions. Gravity concentration has long been employed to pre-concentrate minerals using water, reducing or eliminating the need for less environmentally friendly processing techniques such as flotation. Conventional gravity recovery devices however, operate in a 1 g environment with limited efficiency in the separation of fine particles of heavy and gangue minerals. More recently developed centrifugal concentrators operate in a multi-g environment and enable finer heavy minerals to be recovered, but also exhibit limited separation efficiency due to the separations being based on solid particle mass differentials. Further enhancement of gravity separation has been achieved using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ), which also operates in a multi-g environment, but separates minerals on the basis of specific gravity differentials, using 'ragging' media and a pulsation mechanism, which maximises the effect of differential particle accelerations. This enables the efficient separation/recovery of minerals down to a particle size of ~6 ¦m and/or separation of minerals with a low specific gravity differential. This paper presents details on the principals of operation of the KCJ, recent improvements in the technology and recent developments in modular KCJ plants, as well as some KCJ application areas, which offer smarter, environmentally friendly processing opportunities for the mineral processing industry.

This paper discusses the determination of the percentage of crystalline material in a natural silica deposit which would be considered harmful to health (<10 ¦m). A sample of the natural silica material was recovered and split into a number of subsamples. Samples were sieved using a conventional dry sieve to remove material >300 ¦m before testing. Particle size analyses of the fine fraction showed 75 per cent of the material was below 10 ¦m. Initially XRD and XPS were run on the samples to determine the minerals and composition of the sample. The XRD revealed strong quartz peaks and smaller tridymite peaks with a high amorphous background. The XPS indicated traces of iron, titanium and carbon with dominant silicon and oxygen peaks. The structure of the sample was investigated using the SEM. It was apparent that there were a number of larger quartz crystals (>30 ¦m) with a mix of amorphous and crystalline in the finer fraction. It was also observed that amorphous material was attached to the surface of the crystals. In order to determine the percentage of crystalline quartz a known amount of quartz was added to the sample incrementally. On each addition an XRD scan was performed and the area under the peaks recorded. Back analysis of these peaks with an assumed percentage of crystalline material in the original sample gave a crystalline content of 30 per cent. The quantity at the respirable fraction was estimated to be 18.7 per cent.

In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...
