INTRODUCTION Certain rock types can be fractured thermally by spallation and thermal cracking. Spalling occurs in the regions subjected to thermal shock temperatures and cracking takes place in the adjacent cooler regions. The analysis of the heat-affected zones requires that heat transfer calculations be made where the thermal conductivity of the rock is a function of temperature and direction. Generally, accurate thermal conductivity data is not available for the high temperatures and rise rates associated with most thermal rock breaking methods. This paper describes a method for determining the thermal conductivity of an orthotropic material whose conductivity is a linear function of temperature. The necessary data is obtained from one test which makes it especially useful for in situ applications. The properties data are determined through an iterative process of comparing theoretically computed values of temperature for assumed conductivity parameters with data measured in the laboratory. The conductivity of the rock is determined when the results of the assumed parameters yield computed temperatures which agree with those obtained experimentally. Transient temperatures are computed using the explicit numerical method at given points in a three-dimensional semi-infinite solid whose surface is symmetrically heated on a circular spot. The thermal conductivity is assumed to be a linear function K = [a] + Bt; however, if necessary, any reasonable linear or non-linear function might just as well be used. In the extreme northeast corner of the State of Washington, on the Canadian border, lies the Metaline mining district. This district is old in history, but young in production. The Metaline district is a zinc-lead area of the replacement type in dolomite and limestone. The ore bodies of the Josephine horizon are in many ways similar to the ore bodies of the famous Tri-State zinc fields. The beds are faulted and folded and have varyng low dips in varying directions, and underlie large areas of the district. Production started in 1927 on a very limited basis. The property is now mining and milling 700 tons per day. The mine is opened by adit tunnels and a vertical shaft. As the ore horizons gained depth, it was necessary to sink inclines to follow the ore horizon (see Fig 1). From 1927 to date, approximately 600,000 ft of diamond drill was put down This work indicated that sufficient tonnage existed to justify a redesigning of the whole operation, surface and under- ground. THE Iron and Steel Division has shared in the general increased activity of the industry. The fall meeting at Chicago was not only well attended but particularly characterized by the virility and scope of the discussions at the various sessions. The program for the February meeting indicates a similar interest in technological developments. The Blast-Furnace Committee continues to have the hearty support of the industry with discussions of such a nature as to be of real help to the operator as well ass the technologist. The work of the Open-Hearth Committee continues to be outstanding, with ever increasing attendance and ever mounting interest in the meetings. SEVERAL statements have been made to the Institute, somewhat detached from each other, as to the cost of some parts of these works, but they have not included any extended description of the. buildings or machinery. The general plan of the work connected with the water supply differs, in some important details, from that which has been common either in the Pittsburgh district or elsewhere, and a somewhat extended description may be of interest to the Institute, in connection with a note of the cost of the work. The plan as a whole, and nearly all the important details, were developed by Mr. William P. Shinn, C.E., the general manager of the Company. The immediate and responsible charge of the work was in the hands of Mr. John C. Lewis, C.E., to whom had been committed all the work of this general description, including the laying-out of the whole of the foundations, the erection of the buildings, and the grading and laying down of the entire railroad system. The continuous operation of the machinery and other fixtures of these waterworks, for more than three years, has fully demonstrated the correctness and economy of the plan adopted. No casualties of any moment have befallen the apparatus, and no improvements have been suggested as important except that the gate at the river end of the conduit should have been made more completely water-tight, so that the whole length of the conduit could be pumped out dry without resort to any temporary dam in the conduit itself. In general terms the works of the Edgar Thomson Company are situated on a plateau, about 52 feet above the low-water level of the Monongahela River, and about 2000 feet from its bank. The site of the works is bordered on one side by Turtle Creek, a small stream which drains a considerable area of coal mining territory. This creek is about 100 feet from the group of buildings which have been erected, but it flows into the Monongahela River at a point, about 1200 feet further up than that selected for the entrance to the water-works conduit. It was ascertained by analysis that the water in the creek contains an important percentage of sulphate of lime, while the water of the river is of unusual purity, in respect of any salts

i\ program has been written which allows fully automatic conversion of data for X-ray intensity, as a function of time, to finished conventional pole figures. The program accepts input data in the serial order in which they are taken and is therefore immediately compatible with automatic data-acquisition devices. From these data taped instructions are prepared for the Calcomp plotter to construct ink-on-paper drawings. Because both Siemens and Norelco pole figure goniometers are used in this laboratory, the program was written for pole figure data obtained from one or more interpenetrating spiral scans during which both the polar angle, @, and the equatorial angle, a, are varied simultaneously and continuously. The reference direction for a scan, that is the point @ = 0 deg, may be chosen coincident with either the normal direction (N.D. figures) or the rolling direction (R.D. figures). In either case the plotted figures are drawn with the transverse direction (a = 0 deg) at the right and the rolling direction at the top. The full, circular, pole figure is drawn as two semicircular figures labeled "front side" and "back side". As presently constituted, the program will also accept data from circular scans taken at constant values of @. In every case the angular coordinates of each intensity entry are generated in the computer from a relatively small number of auxiliary data. The X-ray intensity data are corrected for background scattering by direct subtraction of the intensity measured with 28 set appropriately "off" the Bragg angle. It is possible to enter this correction as an additional spiral scan through the a, @ space; because the background correction does not normally vary rapidly enough to warrant this detailed a determination, the background corrections are entered as one or more auxiliary data. All data are normalized to a multiple of random intensity. The data taken in this laboratory for N.D. figures are normally taken in a reflection geometry from from sheet samples and do not extend beyond <p = 75 deg; for these data random intensity must be determined from separate experiments and entered as auxiliary information. When the auxiliary information is not available, a number is chosen to give intensity values normalized to a scale of 1 to 10. In this laboratory, R.D. figures are based upon hemispherical samples for which data are taken out to @ = 90 deg; for these data random intensity is calculated by direct numerical integration of . sin @ d@ using the trapezoidal rule and the background-corrected values of the input data. Points necessary to the construction of the pole figure are identified by simple linear interpolation between adjacent data points to determine the loci of contour lines. Points lying on a given contour are connected to one another with straight-line segments and the search-calculation-drawing sequence is patterned to assure that different contour lines do not cross, that a single line does not branch, and that lines do not end in space. However, so that there be no ambiguity in the data presentation, all contour lines end at the limits of the input data. Since the curves are constructed of straight-line segments, they are not continuous in their derivatives. However,

Because of the extensive utilization of hydraulic fracturing for the stimulation of low-productivity wells, the two related problems of fracture design and evaluation have become economically significant and, as a consequence, helve motivated this investigation. The producing characteristics of horizontally fractured wells were studied to determine the fracture configuration that should be employed as the basis for the design of the treatment and to develop a method that can be used to establish the degree to which the design objectives have been achieved. The equations which describe the steady-state flow of a single-phase fluid into, and through. a finite-capacity fracture were solved numerically for an idealized reservoir-fracture model. The numerical results were used to obtain an apparent skin effect for each combination of the parameters considered. Based on the computed results, subject to the limitcitions implied by the assumptions that were made, the following general conclusions were drawn. 1. For a radius of drainage at least four times us large as the radius of the fracture, an apparent skin effect that is independent of the radius of drainage can be calculated. 2. The productivity of the hydraulically fractured system, relative to that of the unfructured well, can be determined from the apparent skin effect and can be used to establish design objectives. 3. In the evaluation of a fracture job, it is not Possible to determine both the radius of the fracture and its flow capacity uniquely from the apparent skin effect; an independent determination of one of the quantities is necessary. lNTRODUCTION Although hydraulic fracturing has been employed as a method for stimulating the productivity of literally hundreds of thousands of wells during the past 10 years, it is only in the last few years that improvements in fracture design1-6 and fracturing technique&apos; have combined to increase the probability of obtaining a successful treatment to such an extent that the mechanics of the method may be considered to be standardized. From an economic point of view, however, two related questions must be satisfactorily answered before hydraulic fracturing can be used in the most profitable manner. The two questions are the following. I. For a particular well in a given formation, what are the optimum design specifications for the fracture treatment? 2. Have the design objectives been achieved by the fracture treatment? The significance of these questions has been recoguized, and some attempts to obtain answers have been made. Howard, et al,8 endeavored to determine the optimum treatment, based on maximizing profits, for any given formation; unfortunately, this work was based on a crude method for approximating the productivity of a well. Carter and Tracy9 utilized the same approximation to study the effect of fracturing on the behavior of a well producing by virtue of a solution-gas drive. Electrolytic models were used by van Poollen10 to investigate the variation in productivity due to fracturing; however, only a limited number of results were presented. Later, from the same model results, van Poollen, et al,11 attempted to justify an approximate expression for determining the productivity of a fractured well. It is quite apparent that there is a definite lack of the practical information necessary for specifying the optimum fracture configuration to be considered for design purposes. The only detailed attempt to develop a procedure for evaluating the result of a given fracture treatment appears to be that of van Dam and Horner.12 These authors described a technique for analyzing pressure build-down data, obtained immediately after fracturing, to determine the final fracture volume, the final fracture porosity, the fracture area, the fracture thickness and the in situ fluid loss of the fracturing fluid. While this approach should be useful whenever acceptable pressure measurements are available, it does not yield a value for the flow capacity of the fracture. Since the problems of fracture design and evaluation are inversely related, it should be sufficient to study the effect of the fracture configuration on the performance of a well. The primary objective of this investigation is to evolve a technique for computing the desired solutions. U.S. Steel Corp.&apos;s Winifrede mine is operated by Lynch District in the mountainous region of eastern Kentucky. This region is characterized by narrow finger ridges and precipitous slopes, which present both an opportunity and challenge in the design and selection of coal-handling facilities for the movement of coal from the section belts to the railrod cars. Lynch District selected diesel-powered locomo¬tives and 100-ton articulated cars capable of negotiating sharp curves. The drop¬bottom mine cars are equipped with longitudinally hinged doors that are auto¬matically opened and closed. Lynch District selected a large-diameter steel-lined borehole for lowering the coal approximately 1000 ft from the seam level to the valley floor railroad load-out point. Taking advantage of gravity, the presized coal is "lowered" vertically approximately 720 ft to existing entries of a previously abandoned mine. The coal is then conveyed horizontally into storage. The coal¬handling facility from the mine-car dump to the railroad load-out point is fully automatic through use of tone control. TV cameras are installed along the facility to continuously monitor the strategic points. The diesel locomotives are either directly operated or remotely radio-controlled, depending on the functions Per¬formed. This region is characterized by narrow mountain ridges and precipitous slopes which present both an opportunity and challenge in the design and selection of coal-handling facilities for the movement of coal from the section belts to the railroad cars. The narrow finger ridges precluded use of under¬ground haulage and, thereby, presented the opportunity to use high-capacity equipment on the outside bench. The precipitous mountain slopes, steepest at the Wini¬frede seam horizon, presented a challenge to select a solution for lowering the coal approximately 1000 ft from the seam level to the valley floor railroad load-out point. It was evident from the start of planning that these two factors predominated; namely, rail haulage and coal lowering, and solutions to these would determine the final design of the Winifrede mine coal-handling facilities. The Winifrede mine derives its name from the Wini¬frede Seam which comprises the total reserve recov¬erable from this facility. The seam is 5 ft high with a good siltstone bottom and competent shale or sandstone roof. The seam is at an elevation of 2700 ft where the mountain ridges are long and narrow. This configuration of the reserve was ideal for conveyor belt installation to transport the coal from the working face to the outside bench. The preclusion of underground rail haul¬age permitted an opportunity to review the type of locomotive power and to select high-capacity equipment without the limitations associated with underground systems. Since the basic electrical design of the mine was al¬ternating current, with rectification to direct current for shuttle cars required only in the face areas, there was no point in bearing the burden of additional cost of dc trolley installation. And, since the haulage would re¬quire only a few tunnels to negotiate sharp points and to reach the back side of the reserves, diesel power was selected for the haulage locomotives. To provide stability on the almost continuously curv¬ing track and to provide the maximum width of haul¬age equipment, both locomotives and mine cars, stan¬dard railroad gage was chosen to offer the largest choice of equipment. The decision was made to select a standard 45-ton railroad diesel locomotive but to lower the cab height to reduce tunnel excavation requirements. The mine car was the next challenge. Past experience in Lynch operations indicated that drop-bottom cars would be a successful application with the free-flowing coal. The search was for a drop-bottom car within the dimensions of the locomotive to discharge the coal in the shortest time. Numerous types were considered and visits made to various sites to observe cars in operation.

IN 1947 the metal-mining industry . passed through a year of readjustment; catching up on development work has caused production to suffer. Skilled labor has been short in most mining districts, notwithstanding the highest wage rate paid in the history of the industry. The trend has continued toward increased mechanization and refinements in practices and methods to increase the tons produced per man-shift. Improvements in procedures, however, have not kept pace with rising labor rates; and, in general, labor costs per ton mined have steadily increased since the war years. Prices of base metals have been the highest in a generation, but most producing companies can afford to pay the high wages. Capital expenditures have been approved for improvements to increase the output per man, both to reduce unit labor costs and to increase output. Surveys indicate a continuing

INTRODUCTION IN general, during all electrowinning processes, large volumes of gas are liberated at the cathodes of the electrolytic cells. Most of this gas escapes from the electrolyte, but much of it may be absorbed or entrapped in the metal being plated. In many cases, this is not objectionable, but since it is liberated when the metal is heated, it is a potential source of trouble where the metal has to be heated or melted. Since this gas is principally hydrogen, in escaping from a melt it may cause minor explosions and scattering of the molten metal, while in other cases it has been reported to make the metal rise in the molds when cast. Therefore such metals would be more generally useful if all or most of the gas were removed before they were used. In an earlier investigation&apos; the gas content of electrolytic manganese was determined and methods found for removing most of it without detrimentally affecting the properties of the metal. In this paper results of a similar investigation on electrolytic chromium are presented. APPARATUS The apparatus used in these investigations is essentially the same as that used in the manganese work&apos; and is shown in Fig I. It consists of sample chamber A, vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The pressure in the system is measured by the mercury manometer B. Changes in &apos; gas volume are measured by volume gauge C which is essentially another mercury manometer in which . the volume of the mercury column is large and can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of 100 cc for a 61 cm length. Larger changes in gas volume can be accommodated by auxiliary containers attached to the system at F. The sample is heated by furnace G, the temperature of which is regulated within ± 5°C by an automatic controller. The only change in the apparatus was the sample container which was made smaller because of the chromium metal&apos;s containing more gas than the manganese metal and a smaller sample was used. METHOD The measurements were made as follows: The complete system when cold was evacuated and refilled with H2 until all the air was removed. It was then refilled with H2 to the desired pressure, as indicated on manometer B. The temperature was then raised to the desired value and as gas was either liberated from or absorbed by the sample, the height of well H was changed to alter the volume of the system so as to keep the pressure constant. In determining rates of liberation of gas, volume readings were taken at convenient time intervals depending on the rapidity with which the gas was liberated. This paper comprises suggestions on certain points rather than a complete survey of the whole subject. In other words, it is a contribution to the kenera1 discussion invited by John Hays Hammond in his paper, presented as a Presidential address at the Chattanooga meeting of the Institute, in October, 1908.1 Mr. Hammond says, in conclusion: "... I am not offering a code, or even an official and representative declaration of principles.. My remarks are intended, and will, I hope, be accepted, simply as a contribution to that discussion of their theme in which every engineer of experience may participate." Such a discussion has been conducted in technical journals, as well as in contributions to the Transuctions of the Institute; and, in the remarks here offered, I shall have occasion to refer the read& to what I have thus published elsewhere, for more extended statements of my views. What Mr. Hammond says about loyalty to employers, the double capacity of the engineer as an employer, the expert witness, commissions on machinery, the statement that most swindling is done by laymen and not by engineers, duty to the investing public, and the engagement of local engineers as colleagues, it is a pleasure to indorse. A little more than a year and a half ago construction started on Canada&apos;s largest initial milling plant. Today the zinc concentrating plant 7 miles north of Barraute sits on ground that once was forest and clay flats. The plant is part of Barvue Mines Ltd. zinc-silver operation. Employees of the plant live in the model community of Barvue, built like the plant in record time. About 5000 tons of ore are handled by the plant daily, with an output of 200 tons of zinc concentrate. Management hopes to raise capacity of the $8 million plant to 6000 tons.

ONCE it was believed that anthracite or coke were the only fuels generally available and suitable for the generation of water gas, particularly so when this gas was made in the generators of standard carburetted water-gas sets such as are commonly used in the manufacture of city gas. During the past 8 years, practice has changed considerably and it is -now common to find gas plants operating without anthracite or coke and using bituminous coal in the generator. This change in fuel has appreciably increased the marketability and sales of certain coal producers&apos; products; accordingly it is of interest to coal operators and others to know the reason for this change, the present trend in practice and the adaptability of various coals for generation of water gas. This paper briefly discusses these conditions and some of the factors relating thereto. BITUMINOUS COAL NOT IDEAL BUT CHEAPER THAN COKE In spite of many changes which have been made in both process and generating apparatus for using bituminous coal as generator fuel more efficiently, in general it is not an ideal fuel for this purpose. It is supplanting coke because it costs less; it is so much cheaper per ton delivered at the gas works that water gas made therefrom costs less per unit-volume than that made from coke, even though the quantity of generator fuel consumed per therm (100,000 B. t. u.) of gas made is greater with coal. This is the reason why so many city gas plants, as well as others, are using bituminous coal instead of coke.

The East Texas district includes the northeast 38 counties of the State of Texas. It still remains one of the most important oil-and-gas-producing areas of the United States, since it includes within its boundaries the large East Texas field. Other fields of importance are: Van, Rodessa, Talco, Cayuga, Long Lake and Sulphur Bluff. Production is from the Nacatoch, Blossom, and Woodbine of the upper Cretaceous and the Paluxy and Glen Rose of the lower Cretaceous. Of these, the Woodbine is the most important, since it is the producing horizon iri the East Texas field. Fields East Texas Field.—There were 2471 oil wells, 1 gas well and 84 failures completed during the year of 1936 in the East Texas field; that is, 1565 fewer than in the year of 1935. The total number of producing wells is now 22,031, of which 50 are temporarily shut down; 18,435 wells flowing their production; 3150 pumping; 293 on gas-lift, and 82 operated by other methods. This shows an increase of 1642 wells on artificial lift over Jan. 1, 1935. The average daily salt-water production is estimated at 42,700 bbl. from 2327 wells—an increase of 1201 wells over the year of 1935. The field is now drilled to an average density of one well to 5.85 acres. Average bottom-hole pressure has dropped from 1193 Ib. to 1168 lb., approximately 1 lb. drop for each 6,600,000 bbl. of oil produced. During the month of December 1936, the estimated daily average production of illegal oil had dropped from 20,500 bbl. in December 1935 to 7500 bbl. The commercial gas production is of minor importance in the East Texas field, and figures for the amount of gas taken from the field are not available at the present time. Talco Field, Titus and Franklin Counties.—The discovery well was drilled by Housh, Thompson et al. on the C. M. Carr tract and completed in March 1936, as a pumping well making 552 bbl. per day of 24&apos; gravity oil. This well was first completed at a total depth of 4208 ft., the top of the sand being 4190 ft. Later it was deepened to 4260 ft., which increased the production from 552 to 725 bbl. per day. On July 15, 16, and 17, 1918, through the good offices of Secretary Stoughton, and the courtesy of War Department officials, Columbia Section was able to secure a series of moving pictures which were presented under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association.. The title was "The Way Out," representing the activities of individuals who had lost an arm, a leg, or both, yet whose apparent misfortunes were made the stepping stones to advancement in various human activities. The exhibitions were given at Natatorium Park in the evening, each of the three performances being attended by 1000 per-sons. Later the films were shipped to Kellogg, Idaho, where they were shown in the principal playhouse one evening to a full house. On July 31, 1918, the Columbia Section participated in the luncheon and other entertainment in honor of Alfred D. Flinn, Secretary of the Engineering Council, who made a trip through the country to meet different classes of engineers, members of the National Societies, for whom he had a message. The entertainment was under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, Mr. Peter Mogensen presiding. The luncheon was held in the Elizabethan Room, Davenport Hotel, at noon, 35 engineers being present, of whom about one-third were our members.

This report covers a study of three different methods for drying ultrafine coals by sound waves. Ultrafine material is classified as coal which passes through a 100-mesh sieve. During the investigations, it was found that the addition of acoustic radiation to the drying of ultrafine coal is effective in increasing the rate of drying; the effect of acoustic radiation to improve drying decreases with an increase in the temperature of the system; the drying rate increased 10-40% when acoustic radiation was introduced into a rotary kiln but was dependent upon the environmental conditions; the application of vertical vibrations to multi-tiered drying screens increased the rate of moisture removal ten times over that obtained in the rotary kiln; the formation of coal balls in any of the drier systems retards the rate of drying; the higher the initial moisture content of the coal the greater the amount of coal balls formed.

THE morphology and mechanism of the proeutectoid a and the eutectoid reactions have been recently investigated in some detail in an iodide-base Ti—7.22 pct Cr alloy.&apos; These studies have now been extended to an iodide-base Ti—10.8 pct Cr alloy in order to evaluate the effects of composition on the proeutectoid and eutectoid transformations in titanium-chromium alloys. The alloy used in this investigation had the following composition: 10.8 Cr, 0.0327 0, 0.011 N, 0.0063 H, and 0.011 pct C. In 1961, a research program started at Columbia into the mechanical aspects of flotation,* and certain ends are now in view. The purpose of this note is to explain these tentative conclusions in the hope of stimulating discussion and eliciting new data, especially industrial data, with which to test the views expressed. The variables presently under consideration are impeller rotational speed, N, volumetric air rate, Q, and impeller diameter, D, the latter being the parameter chosen to designate cell size. The GNQ and RNQ relationships are best viewed in terms of three-dimensional surfaces (Fig. 1) which are experimentally determinate.2 TO maintain grade at an acceptably high level, it is necessary for N and Q to lie within certain limits, and similarly with recovery. DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in manv mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment. Mine drainages vary in percentage composition over wide limits, although the usual dissolved substances are ferrous and ferric iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium sulfates, and lesser amounts of sodium, potassium and manganese sulfates and chlorides. Some alkaline discharges may contain heavy concentrations of iron as iron bicarbonate. These waters may produce iron hydroxide deposits in the receiving stream but do not cause it to become acid. In the extensive literature on acid mine water there appears to be a great deal of confusion about the importance of various components and the methods for their determination. In many instances faulty conclusions have been drawn from use of unsuitable methods of analysis. It is desirable that the factors and terms used in evaluation of analyses of mine waters should be so clearly defined that any interested person could properly appraise any analytical report. Some analysts report complete chemical analyses of mine waters and neglect to record drainage volumes. Others report only a minimum of analytical data after taking no precautions to preserve the original composition of the water during the time elapsing between collection and analysis. Some use methods of analysis intended for so-called pure waters of the potable and boiler water classes. These methods are not applicable to highly buffered waters such as mine water. Probably the most common criteria for evaluation are pH, free acidity, or acidity or alkalinity to methyl orange or methyl red, total acidity or acidity to hot phenol-phthalein, and the sulfate content. If these determinations are made on carelessly collected samples after a few days to weeks standing in warm rooms, they do not in any way represent the character of the water flowing from the mines. It is hoped that a brief discussion of the fundamental value of some of these factors may lead to a bettqr understanding of the need for more careful evaluation of mine water discharges. The term pH is one used by chemists to express relative acidity or alkalinity in terms of concentration of effective hydrogen ion in a solution. It is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration or activity in equivalents per liter. pH = logarithm A neutral solution, which is one containing the same number of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions, has a pH of 7. As the hydrogen ions increase and the solution becomes more acid, the pH decreases toward zero; and as the hydroxyl ions increase and the solution becomes more alkaline, the pH approaches 14. When dissolved in water to a dilute solution acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric, commonly known as strong acids, ionize completely, and the pH or hydrogen ion concentration varies with molar concentration of the dissolved acid. However, in high concentrations of such acids, the pH or hydrogen ion concentration is less than the acid concentration because the acid does not completely ionize. In only very dilute solutions does the pH represent the total amount of acid that can be neutralized by an alkali. All ionization reactions are equilibrium reactions. If other chemicals are added to the solution of an acid and the added chemical produces an ion that is the same as one of the ions of the acid, the degree of ionization of the acid is altered and the pH changes to some value that represents the active hydrogen ion of the new solution. Thus if iron sulfate is added to a solution of sulfuric acid the pH increases, since the common sulfate ion suppresses the degree of ionization of the sulfuric acid and decreases the effective hydrogen ion. However, the total acidity of the solution is increased. There are two salts composed of iron and sulfate— ferrous and ferric sulfate. In these salts there is no hydrogen ion that can ionize to give an acid solution, but when they are dissolved in water, the pH is less than 7 and the solution becomes acid. This is caused by a reaction known as hydrolysis and is represented by the equations FeSO4 + 2H2O ? Fe(OH)2 + 2H + SO,: or Fe,(SO,)3 + 6H2O ? 2Fe(OH)3 + 6H+ + 3504 A solution with a total acidity of 5000 ppm according to the first equation will have a pH of 4.40 but one with an acidity of 75 ppm, according to the sec-
