The depletion performance of gas wells has been investigated by mathematical simulation techniques. The gas well model which was studied consisted of a single well located in the center of a bounded, cylindrical, homogeneous reservoir. Dependency of gas compressibility and viscosity on pressure was considered in studies of well performance at both constant mass flow rate and constant flowing pressure conditions. To carry out the investigation, the nonlinear, second-order, partial differential equation which describes Darcy flow of a nonideal gas through porous media was solved numerically. Some of the previous investigations of gas well performance have been of limited general use, because assumptions were introduced to simplify either the gas properties or the basic differential equation. Other studies have been rigorous in these respects but have presented a very limited set of calculated results. The present study was attempted to present a rigorous theoretical model and sufficient numerical results to permit meaningful conclusions to be drawn. It was found that all terms must be retained in the partial differential equation to make accurate predictions. The neglect of higher-order terms, e.g., terms of the order of the "gradient squared", leads to serious material balance errors at large times and to conservative estimates of gas well performance. The higher the gas flow rate and/or the lower the permeability-thickness product of the formation, the more pronounced are these deviations. For example, in a well draining 640 acres in a 25-md-ft formation (8,120 MMcf gas in place) at a constant rate of 993 Mcf/D, the rigorous solution predicts a bottom-hole pressure decline from 4,000 to 1,000 psia in 8.7 years. If higher-order terms are neglected in the differential equation, this decline in pressure is predicted to occur in 5.3 years. With the results of the numerical solution of the differential equation as a basis, simple, easy-to-use approximations for predicting gas well performance for Darcy flow conditions have been developed. These simple approximations are based on the familiar equations for flow of a single, slightly compressible fluid. The approximate methods possess a high degree of accuracy and enable the prediction of long-term gas well performance to be made quickly and accurately without the use of a digital computer. Both transient and stable flow period approximations were developed. INTRODUCTION In recent years income from the sale of natural gas and associated products has represented an ever-incre as ing fraction of the industry's total revenue from operations. To meet the surge in demand for natural gas, the industry has depended heavily upon established reserves and has actively pursued development of new reserves. The search has progressively led to reservoirs which yesterday were too tight and/or deep to yield the desired return on invested capital. More than ever before, evaluation accuracy is now required to forecast the criteria upon which engineering recommendations and management decisions are based. Considerable effort has been expended by both research and operations personnel on the development and application of methods for analyzing and predicting the performance of gas wells. Fundamentally, the problem is the familiar one of extracting data during the drilling, testing and early production life of a well and applying these data within an accurate simulation model to predict long-term behavior. During the past 30 or more years a voluminous literature dealing specifically with gas field problems has been generated. A recent book' lists a comprehensive bibliography of published material through 1959. Over 1,200 references are cited. Since then 39 additional articles on natural gas technology have been published in Transactions volumes of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME. Most existing theory for predicting gas well performance requires that one or more idealizations (e.g., steady-state flow, ideal gas of constant viscosity, small and constant compressibility and constant-viscosity fluid) be applied. Although existing theory may apply directly or be adapted by various artifices to describe specific gas well and reservoir behavior, no widely applicable method is available, and existing methods appear to be subject to appreciable error unless better limits of applicability are defined. The objectives of this paper are (1) to present numerical solutions to the partial differential equation describing gas flow under conditions of general interest in gas well performance prediction work, (2) to present solutions which possess a high order of accuracy for both transient and stabilized flow periods of a well producing at constant rate or constant pressure, and (3) to develop and present simplified relationships which can be used as high-order approximations to the exact numerical results for fast and accurate predictions of gas well performance at the operating level. THERE is probably no other mineral industry of which the public has as much information and misinformation as it has of the coal industry. Unfortunately, however, the general public's knowledge of the coal industry, outside of the particular kind of coal it is accustomed to, by reason of use, is largely made up of information received from newspaper and popular magazine articles, in which the mine workers are depicted as overworked and mistreated men, and the coal operators as "coal barons." Those who have any specific knowledge of exact conditions in the coal industry know how unjust and un- fair such an opinion of the coal industry is, not only to the miner but to the operator as well. Many reporters and writers of magazine articles are misled by statements regarding the condition of the miners that are exaggerated and not founded on facts and, if an investigation of the conditions of the miner's work, his habitation and surroundings were fairly made, it would at least compel more truthful statements by those who write for public reading. That such an investigation would not reveal anything that was wrong, or anything to be censured or cured, no one, I think, would maintain, but I do think that any fair investigation of the facts would show that conditions in and around the newer and later-developed coal mines and communities would compare favorably with those of manufacturing districts, and that where the mines and com- munities are old and not very attractive places to work, or live in, they carry with them other considerations, compensating for these conditions, and cannot be remedied by reason of a lack of sufficient coal to warrant economically any costly changes.

The ability of activated charcoal or carbon to adsorb complex metal ions has been recognized for many years, but it wasn't until the late 1940s and early 1950s that attempts were made to employ carbon-In-Pulp or C. I. P. processing to the recovery of gold. Early plants using the process were those at the Golden Cycle in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the Getchell Mine near Golconda, Nevada, and at the Idria Mine in Honduras. Recovery of the carbon from the pulp was done by screening or flotation, and recovery of gold from the carbon was done by burning the carbon (a very difficult task) or by sending it to a smelter. Unfortunately at the time, the price of gold was still fixed at $3-5 per ounce and labor costs were rising to the point where these mines were no longer able to operate. Consequently, C. I. P. treatment was temporarily forgotten. In the early 1970s, however, Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota, were being forced by environmental regulations to discontinue the use of mercury for amalgamation in their 7,500 ton per day plant, and at the same time were encountering high labor costs in the slime circuit of the plant, where over 2,000 tons of slimes were filtered each day in Merrill plate and frame filter presses. Shortly before that, researchers of the United States Bureau of Mines had developed the caustic -cyanide method of stripping gold from activated carbon and an electrolytic cell (now known as the Zadra cell) to recover gold from the carbon strip liquor. Homestake and the United States Bureau of Mines then jointly operated a C. I. P. pilot plant at Lead. Results were immediately favorable and a 2,400 ton per day C. I. P. plant was then built to treat the slime fraction of the Homestake ore. (See Au and Ag Cyanidation Plant Practice, Volume I, SME of AIME, 1975. Later, Homestake built a second plant at Creede, Colorado, to treat the slime fraction of the tailings from a silver-lead flotation plant. Next was Duval Corporation's 3,000 ton per day C. I. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 260 ft. per 1000. THE melting of cathode copper, usually containing 99.98+ per cent. Cu, would appear to be a simple matter. Owing to the well known affinity of copper for sulphur, however, so much sulphur is absorbed by the copper during the operation that a long and expensive refining process is required to remove it, and the final product is inferior in purity and lower in electrical conductivity than the original cathode copper. The furnace operation, as now conducted, includes the following stages: 1. Charging the cathodes into the furnace. 2. Melting the cathodes. 3. Oxidizing period-saturating the copper with cuprous sub-oxide and bringing the metal to the condition known as "set copper;" this is now done by blowing air into the molten bath of metal. 4. Reduction period, otherwise known as "poling," whereby the oxygen previously added is removed by covering the molten bath completely with coke or charcoal and introducing large poles of green wood; this reduces the cuprous sub-oxide, bringing the copper to the "tough pitch" stage ready for casting. 5. Casting Period. Many experiments have been made to obviate the long periods of oxidation and subsequent reduction, with no success. While the copper first, cast will be good, as indicated by the set surface of the bars, it is impossible to hold it to the "tough pitch" condition, and long before the whole charge has been poured the copper will become "overpoled," entailing numerous difficulties. Sulphur has always been blamed by the furnace men as the reason why this refining process is necessary, yet the literature on the subject does not sufficiently emphasize how small a proportion of sulphur will ruin copper for practical purposes.

Prior to 1916, thickening was an art, and any accurate decision as to what size of machine to install to handle a given tonnage of a specific ore must have been one of those intuitive conclusions, based on both intimate and extensive acquaintance with thick-ners and ore pulps. Then in 1916 "knowledge of acquaintance," became "knowledge about" with the publication of the Coe and Clevenger paper.' The unit operation of thickening had graduated to the status of an engineering science. The fundamental similitude relationships for the two major phases of the operation were defined so clearly that batch tests on models as small as liter cylinders could serve to specify protypes as large as 325 ft in diameter. It is quite apparent from reading the literature that Coe and Clevenger's contribution is not generally appreciated. In so far as the basic engineering relationships are concerned, the only real advance which has occurred in the 30 odd years which have elapsed since the Coe and Clevenger paper is the recognition of the effect of the rakes on the thickening process. Bull and Darby2 noted this in 1926, and the extensive use of the "gluten type" thickener, in which the effect is magni-fied, bears witness to its importance. Comings3 further verified this effect of the rakes. As a matter of fact, a number of papers show an apparent regression from the Coe paper in that the area determinations are made on the basis of a single test from One concentration of solids. Coe and Clevenger amply demonstrated that this is unsafe, since the controlling zone may be one other than that of the feed dilution. Comings3 neatly demonstrated this without apparently realizing it. Of course there have been significant advances in the application of the operation to industry. Open tray thickeners were introduced to save area; balanced tray thickeners, washing thickeners, and multifeed clarifiers were developed with all of their special hydraulic and mechanical problems. Combinations of all kinds have been introduced, such as combination agitators and thickeners, combination flocculators and clarifiers, combination thickeners and filters. With the establishment of the operation on a firm engineering foundation, installation was facilitated and expansion proceeded. There are still problems, of course, functional as well as mechanical. Sometimes the moisture in the underflow obtained in practice is not as low as is expected on the basis of the test data. Sometimes the underflow is so "thick " that its discharge and subsequent handling requires special attention. Island formation plagues some operators. The use of the thickener as a surge basin and blending tank in the cement industry poses unusual problems. Design of rakes and the drive mechanism must be continually im-proved. Corrosion problems must he overcome. Power requirements for raking the settled solids occasionally is the controlling factor as it was in the case of the all American Canal desilting installation. Other similitude relationships and design problems come into the picture when we enter the field of clarification or nonline settlement. We have an energy dissipation problem in introducing the feed and any models must satisfy the Froude model relationships. Autoflocculation requires detention which involves the same similitude laws that we encounter in the compression zone. Approach to an Exact Science The next step beyond having control of the similitude relationships is to understand the why of these relationships right back up the line to first principles. The ultimate might be that, if given the mineralogical composition of the solids and their size distribution together with an analysis of the suspending liquid, we could calculate the entire thickening behavior of the system. Then we could say we had reduced the operation to an exact science. True it might be more trouble getting this basic analytical data than to make our empirical determinations for area and volume, and we would need an ENIAC to calculate the results, but that does not detract from the desirability of such understanding. Considerable work has been done by the chemical engineers with this end in view. Comings,3 Egolf,4 Work,5 Kam-mermeyer,6 Steinour,7 and others have studied the problem. The writer has no final answer to the thickening story but would like to propose a picture of the mechanics of the two phases of thickening which has been found useful in understanding the subject and which leads to some convenient relationship in treating the compression step and arriving at the compression depth.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash, away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum. of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. Empirical equations for surface tension of propane and normal butane as functions of reduced temperature are obtained from experimental data. Another correlation relating surface tension to enthalpy of vaporization is given for these two compounds. In addition, new paracbor numbers are calculated for the normal paraffin hydrocarbons. These numbers are utilized for the calculation of interfacial tension of two-component systems as functions of pressure and temperature, using a modified form of Weinaug-Katz equation. The experimental data for two binary systems are approximated by the correlation. From these results it is found that the interfacial tension in the high-pressure region remains extremely low at large pressure decrements below the critical pressure. Thus, it appears that condensate systems may have flow characteristics almost like single-phase conditions even though the pressure is within the two-phase region. Experimental data have shown that interfacial tension divided by density difference approaches zero as the critical pressure is approached. A calculation of wetting-phase saturations indicates that the saturation gradient at the two-phase contact becomes increasingly abrupt as the critical pressure is approached. DISCUSSION Prediction of the surface and interfacial tension of the light hydrocarbons and of two-component hydrocarbon mixtures at various temperatures and pressures may be made if other physical properties are known. Extensive experimental work on single-component and binary systemsl is the basis for the correlations outlined in this paper. Interfacial tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phases of unlike fractional composition, while surface tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phase:; of the same fractional composition. The usual definitions relating interfacial tension to a liquid-liquid interface and surface tension to a gas-liquid interface are not clearly defined when the critical region is included, and there is no sharp distinction between a gas and a liquid phase. Interfacial tension is probably the most important single force that makes one-half to one-third of the total oil actually in place in a reservoir rock unrecoverable by conventional gas-drive or waterflood methods. A rough estimate of this figure for the United States is 100 billion bbl. Interfacial tension presently is used by petroleum engineers in the estimation of saturation gradients at the gas-oil contact and at the oil-water contact. The data in this paper should prove useful for estimates of reserves involving gas-oil contacts. Relative permeability undoubtedly is influenced by interfacial tension, for sufficiently small values. These data should be useful in determining how small the values are In addition, these data should eventually add to our fundamental knowledge of surfaces. At the critical point, all surface excesses approach zero and the thickness becomes very large. SINGLE-COMPONENT SYSTEMS It has been observed1 that the following relationships are good approximations to the physical properties of propane and n-butane.

Demand for eastern magnetite in 1948 necessitated practically all eastern magnetite industries to operate on a six-day week, with the result that over 11,000,000 long tons of crude ore were mined, and the shipping products amounted to approximately 5,000,. 000 long tons. Reports indicate that operating on a six-day week and doing maintenance work on the seventh day was satisfactory and resulted in excellent continuity of operation. In the Port Henry district, Republic Steel Corp. once again set new all-time records for the production of crude ore and total shipping product; 1,868,000 long tons of crude ore were mined, 945,000 from the Old Bed mine, 408,500 from the Harmony mine, and 514,500 from the Fisher Hill mine. Of the 969,000 long tons of shipping products, 663,800 long tons were sinter, 181,000 lump ore, and 115,200 con¬centrates.

UNTIL a few years ago, geological mapping, the study of ore boulders, and different geophysical methods were the principal means used in the systematic search for mineral deposits covered by a layer of disintegration products or soil. These methods have been developed to a high stage of perfection as far as the geometrical definition of the conductor is considered. Use of geophysical methods in prospecting is based on the fact that an ore body differs from the country rock not only geologically but also in its physical properties. The general drawbacks and complications included in the use of geophysical methods are well known to everyone who has been using them, so need not be entered into here in detail. One of the more important ones is the fact that geophysical methods are unable to furnish information concerning the chemical composition of the ore bodies responsible for the indications. Further, the ores of many metals, such as silver, gold, beryllium, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, vanadium, antimony, chromium. molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and the platinum metals cannot be directly located by known geophysical methods, owing to lack of physical characteristics suitable for distinguishing them from the country rock. Thus it is quite natural that efforts have been made to develop direct methods for prospecting and locating ore bodies of the elements named. Known as chemical, biogeo-chemical, and geobotanical methods of prospecting, these have been much improved during recent years. A brief review of these methods and of some results obtained with them will be presented in the following, on the basis of available information and my own experience.

NONOCTAHEDRAL slip was observed in poly- crystalline aggregates of aluminum by Boas and Ogilvie.&apos; These authors indicate that the non-octahedral slip takes place on (100) or (110) planes. Ogilvie2 studied the continuity of slip lines across grain boundaries in polycrystalline aluminum. Non-octahedral slip was observed by him, but it was not reported to occur in the continuous slip lines across the grain boundaries, which were identified as octahedral slip in all cases. The present note reports the observation of non-octahedral slip in the grain boundary region of an aluminum bicrystal and tricrystal, both deformed in tension at room temperature. An analysis is made, which leads to a probable identification of the non-octahedral slip planes as (110) and (331). The specimens used were of rectangular cross section, approximately 5x10x200 mm. They were prepared by growth from the melt, using aluminum reported by the manufacturer to be 99.994 pct pure. The grain boundaries were in a plane perpendicular to the wider face and parallel to the long dimension of the specimens. The axis of tension was also parallel to the long dimension of the specimen. The orientations of the specimens studied were determined by the Laue back-reflection method and are given in Fig. 1. The nonoctahedral slip was first observed after about 6 pct extension in the bicrystal, and after about 2 pct extension in the tricrystal. The micrograph, Fig. 2, of the grain boundary region of the bicrystal shows two active slip planes throughout each of the two crystals, with a third plane active at the grain boundary in each crystal. Two major sets of slip traces observed in grain No. 1 are consistent with the operation of the slip systems (ill) [oil] and (111) [011]. The nonoctahedral slip takes place on a plane belonging to a <111> zone, as determined by drawing trace normals. Assuming that slip will take place only in the <110> direction, the planes in the <111> zone, which do not contain that direction, need not be considered. Among the remaining prominent planes of that zone, the (011) plane has a common slip direction—the [011]—with the (111) plane, which acts as one of the octahedral slip planes. In grain No. 2, a similar situation to that in grain No. 1 is observed. As indicated previously, the (oil) plane in the <111> zone, to which the nonoctahedral slip plane belongs, has a common [Oil] slip direction with the acting (ill) slip plane. Also, the orientation of the (oil) plane in grain No. 2 almost coincides with the orientation of the acting (111) slip plane in grain No. 1. Similarly, the orientation of the (oil) plane in grain No. 1 almost coincides with the orientation of the acting (111) slip plane in grain No. 2. It is, therefore, possible that the nonoctahedral slip was induced, in both cases, by octahedral slip in the neighboring grain. It is important

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That, we believe that thorough and complete preparedness in the army, the navy and the industries of the country is vital; anything less is unsatisfactory and inefficient and may result in disaster to the nation.

The Yates field is situated in northeastern Pecos County, Texas. Its productive area is about 15,000 acres. Production is chiefly from limestone of Permian age. Depths of wells vary from 1100 to 1800 ft. Initial productions range from a few barrels to 8000 bbl. per hour. The field outlet has always been prorated. Gas-oil ratios originally varied from less than 100 cu. ft. up to 8000 cu. ft. per barrel at allowable production rates. The average ratio was about 500 cu. ft. Fig. 1 shows the structure of the field and the location of the Tippett lease, on which the original experimental tubing work was done. Before the latter part of the year 1929, little actual effort in practice had been given to determination of the conditions under which the highest efficiencies may be realized in naturally flowing wells. For the preceding few years attention had been given to gas-oil ratios and their possible reduction by maintenance of back-pressure by choking at the well head. Some attempts had been made toward reduction of ratio by bottom-hole choking. In late 1929, the Shell Petroleum Corp. started the experimental installation of specially designed flow columns adapted to high-pressure flowing conditions in the Yates field. The objectives in view were the attainment of low gas-oil ratios at low rates of flow and the maintenance of high bottom-hole pressures. All naturally flowing wells should be provided with a suitable eductor string immediately upon completion of the well, so that the benefits of efficient flow will be derived from the beginning. This paper presents a method of tubing for efficient flow and a discussion of some complex factors which influence well behavior. Factors Influencing Gas-oil Ratios Many factors influence the production of gas from naturally flowing wells. The writers believe that in some instances gas control is effected mainly in the reservoir itself, in others in the well bore, and in still others both sets of factors may be significant. Microscopic observations during creep tests were made on AI-20 pet Zn, 80 pet Ni-20 pet Cr, and 25 and 3S aluminum specimens. All these materials failed in an inter-crystalline manner under certain stress and temperature conditions. Particular atten-tion was given to the initiation and propagation of intercrystalline cracks in coarsegrained AI-20 pct Zn specimens. The geometry of the grains and grain boundaries in these specimens was known before the tests. On the basis of the observations and a knowledge of the interaction between grains and grain boundaries, a mechanism of intercrystalline fracture and propagation of the fracture has been proposed. METAL, and alloy fracture occurs essentially in two ways: transcrystalline and intemrystalline. In the past most of the work done in this field was centered on the determination of stress criteria for fracture. The specimens used for these studies were tested under varying conditions of stress state, temperature, and strain rate. Unfortunately, very little attention was given to the initiation and propagation of the fracture, whereas the nature of fracture was examined closely only after failure. Several extensive reviews of these studies have been published by Orowan, Smith, Barrett, and Petch.1, 4 It is well known that a material which exhibits a ductile and transcrystalline fracture can be made to exhibit a brittle and intercrystalline fracture by modifying its composition and by heat treatment. This modification may or may not result in microscopically observable precipitation in the grain boundaries." In the creep of any one alloy the transition of transcrystalline to intercrystalline fracture is a function of stress, strain rate, and temperature." The tendency for intercrystalline fracture to occur increases as the strain rate decreases and the testing temperature increases. Extensive work on high purity aluminum (99.995 pet) under creep conditions showed the importance of the interaction between grains and grain boundaries, and the different responses of grain and grain boundaries to the variables: stress, strain rate, and temperature.7, 8 It was also shown that grain boundary deformation necessarily has to be accommodated in the grains by various deformation means as. for example, fold formation. The type of fracture resulting from the creep of high purity aluminum was invariably found to be transcrystalline. On the other hand, 2S and 3s aluminum were, under certain conditions, found to fracture in an intercrystalline manner." One reason given for this was that the grains could accommodate to a lesser extent the deformation of the grain boundaries.19 It was decided to examine this line of reasoning in greater detail and to investigate the particular interactions between grains and grain boundaries that result in the incidence and progression of inter-ct,ystalline fracture. It is also the purpose of this paper to show where and how intercrystalline cracks start and how they propagate to result in fracture. Several alloys—Al-20 pct Zn, 80 pet Ni-20 pet Cr, 2S and 3s aluminum-— were used for this study, but attention was paid mainly to the behavior of an A1-20 pet Zn alloy, since its general creep behavior has been established." From the results of this study a mechanism of intercrystalline fracture is proposed. Experimental Procedure The experimental procedure was similar to that used in previous work and has been detailed elsewhere.&apos; Two parallel flat surfaces were milled from an originally round specimen, giving a gage portion which was 1x0.09X0.17 in. Some round specimens, 1/4 in. round by 1 in., were also tested. The A1-20 pet Zn specimens. which were annealed at 1030°F for 24 hr, showed two to four grains across the width of the test bar, and most of the grains occupied the whole thickness of the specimenu. Ix the crucible-method of assaying ores for silver a certain amount of litharge is essential to supply sufficient lead to collect the precious metals. The object of this paper is to point out that the use of a .large excess of litharge in the assay of some ores will give results for silver that are uneven as well as low. So far as I know, however, an excess of litharge does not affect the results obtained in the crucible-assay of ores for gold. The main reasons for using, in the crucible-assay, much more litharge than is required to give the necessary lead button are : 1, its action as a flux; 2, its action as a desulphurizer; and 3, its action as an oxidizer, especially on metals like copper and nickel, whereby they are forced into the slag as oxides and thus prevented from passing into the lead button. Hence, by the use of much litharge in the crucible-assay more-ore can often be taken than in the scorification-process, and a lead button obtained which can possibly be cupelled at once or after a single scorification. The method is specially advantageous with an ore carrying much copper or similar impurity and poor in silver, when the assayer does not wish to resort to a wet-analysis for the determination of the silver. It is well known that some ores give better results when assayed by the scorification-method, while others give better results by the crucible-method. For several years I have noticed that, when much litharge was used with certain sulphide and arsenical ores, the results were considerably lower than when the scorification-method was used. The arrangement of the larger furnace at the United Verde smelter, together with the boiler layout and connecting flues, is shown in Fig. 1. The important dimensions are given in the figure, and cross-sectional areas of combustion space, flues, etc., are recorded. The location and extent of the baffling in the boilers also are shown because of their importance in the interpretation of the data. Two boilers serve each reverberatory furnace. They are of the class M-26 Stirling type (rated at 713 boiler hp. each). Steam is generated at 178-lb. gage pressure at a total temperature of 528" F., from feed water at a temperature of 113" F. The feed water is condensate from turbogenerators plus make-up softened by the lime-soda process. The make-up is rather large in amount as it must match the amount of steam consumed in reciprocating blowing engines and the like, which are not served by surface condensers. As a result the boiler feed water has a hardness of 1.5 to 3.0 grains per gallon, but this results in the formation, during six months to one year of boiler operation, of scale only of "eggshell " thickness or less. The boilers are set at the same elevation as the tapping floor of the furnace, which results in the introduction of the waste-heat gases at the top of the front bank of tubes and necessitates the inversion of the usual baffling arrangements. The boilers are equipped with valve-in-the-head soot blowers, which keep most of the dust blown off the surface of the tubes, but it is necessary to supplement the soot blowers by high-pressure air lances, inserted by an attendant through side doors in the boiler setting. Deposits of coal ash and of dust from the furnace charge accumulate in the flues between the reverberatory furnaces and the boilers and this necessitates cleaning of these connecting flues by hand during the greater part of one of the three 8-hr. shifts during each 24 hr. This cleaning operation requires the opening of clean-out doors, which, of course, has some effect on the yield of steam. Revebberatory Furnace Practice The United Verde furnaces are fired with pulverized coal of sub-bituminous type of which the screen and chemical analyses are given in Table 1.
