Historically, rock deposits and sand deposits of titanium minerals came into production about the same time, although there may be some argument as to what is meant by production. Beach deposits of heavy minerals in India (Figs. 1-4) and Brazil (Figs. 5) were worked for monazite about the turn of century, but as there was then no market for titanium minerals, these were thrown away. The rock rutile deposits at Roseland, Va., Fig. 6, were worked to supply rutile for titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics long before there was a titanium pigment business. The pigment industry started about the middle twenties, both in Europe and the U. S., and almost simultaneously the rock deposits at Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Fla., were worked for titanium content. Since those days, production from both types of deposits has continued to grow at a rapid rate; many deposits of both types have been found, and reserves have grown to very large figures. In total tonnage of reserves, there is no doubt that the rock deposits are far ahead of the sand deposits; nevertheless there is a very large tonnage of commercial sands available. It is the quality of titanium mineral in the sand and the relatively lower costs of operating sand deposits that have kept them abreast, at least in annual tonnage produced, with the rock deposits. The principal titanium mineral used is ilmenite, but as soon as that mineral began to be sought as a titanium ore, it was obvious that there are ilmenites and ilmenites. Textbook ilmenite should have the composition FeOTiO2 and should analyze 52.6 pct TiO2 and 36.8 pct iron as Fe. The Indian ilmenite, for almost a generation the standard ore for manufacturing pigment in the U. S., was found to analyze about 60 pct TiO, and only 24 pct. Fe, and most of the iron is in the ferric condition. The whole process of pigment manufacture in the U. S. was built up on the use of a raw material of that grade, and the American chemical engineers who operate the pigment plants shuddered at the thought of using a rock ilmenite with 45 pct or so of TiO, and nearly 40 pct Fe. Intensive search was made around the world to find other deposits of rich black sand, like the Indian beaches, but although a few were found, there was some objectionable feature about each. A deposit in Senegal, south of Dakar (Fig. 7), was worked for a while, but an organic coating on the grains made attack by acid difficult. Modern practice would have included a scrubbing operation, in a caustic soda bath, to eliminate the organic coating. Brazilian deposits were numerous, but individually small, and shipping from them difficult. Deposits on the east coast of Ceylon had many attractive features, but the ilmenite analyzed only 54 pct TiO2 and could have been used only with a penalty. Sand deposits with 2 pct ilmenite, like those now worked in Florida, would not have been considered commercial ore, even if they had been known at that time. Most rock ilmenites are associated or mixed with hematite or magnetite, which accounts for the lower titanium and higher iron values than in the sand ilmenites. The Norwegians, English, and Germans, with cheap Norwegian rock ore at hand, learned to install in their pigment plants adequate capacity on the black side, as it is calltd, and counterbalanced the extra cost of plant, and larger amount of acid used, by the lower cost of ore. When World War II arrived, two of the largest pigment manufacturers in the U. S. had to learn how to use the Adirondack ilmenite, but one of them very gladly went back to sand ores when the Florida deposits came into large-scale production after the war. The other continues to use Adirondack ilmenite and finds it commercially attractive to do so. Rutile is not a raw material for titanium pigment manufacture by the sulfate process, since it is insoluble in sulfuric acid. In addition to its small consumption in chemicals and ceramics it began to be used in quantity in welding rod coatings. With the outbreak of World War 11, and the tremendous need for welding rods in shipbuilding and other structural steel construction, rutile suddenly became in heavy demand. The fracture behavior of a 50 pct Cu-50 pct Fe mi-croduplex alloy, laminated composites of copper and iron and an extruded 50-50 Cu-Fe elemental powder composite was studied. Very low ductile-brittle transition temperatures were achieved in all cases, but for different reasons. In the microduplex alloy both the initiation and also the propagation of cleavage fractures appeared retarded by the very small in-terphase distances. In the composites, crack propagation through the sumples was prevented in most cases by delamination fractures perpendicular to the advancing cracks. These delaminations occurred at different regions and by different mechanisms in the various composites. In the extruded powder composite, de-lamination appeared to take place along preexisting flaws. In the crack arrest geometry of the laminated plates, delamination took place by localized shear fractures within the copper near the Fe-Cu interfaces. In this case delamination was enhanced by thicker laminate layers, and by having the resistance to shear failure of the copper sufficiently low compared to the toughness of the iron. BRITTLE fracture in engineering materials has long been a problem, and many different ways of preventing it have been considered. One method that has been of growing interest lately is to prevent crack propagation by the introduction of mechanical discontinuities into the structure. These discontinuities may act in several ways. They may simply act as crack stoppers. They may introduce secondary fractures such as de-laminations that deflect the initial crack into new, less damaging directions. Alternatively, they may subdivide a fairly large bulk sample that would have been loaded in plane strain, for example, into a number of subunits that are individually loaded in plane stress and thus are more resistant to fracture. Other mechanisms, or combinations of mechanisms, are also feasible. A number of methods exist for introducing mechanical discontinuities into a structure. Composites by their nature have discontinuities in structure, and numerous studies have shown that fracture propagation in materials of this type can be radically changed by suitable control of the composite parameters. Of particular significance to the present work are recent investigations of layered composites made by joining high strength steel sheets by various means.'-4 These studies have shown that through proper control of the mechanical properties of the bonds joining the sheets it was possible to introduce delamination fractures that markedly improved the overall toughness of the composites and in some cases completely prevented through-the-thickness fractures. Another technique for introducing structural discontinuities is simply to use a two-phase alloy. It has been recognized for many years that a small amount of a second phase may improve toughness either by homogenizing plastic flow and thus preventing localized stress concentrations that nucleate fracture, or by interacting with an advancing crack. In most of these studies of two-phase materials, the decreases in ductile-brittle transition temperatures produced by the second phase were relatively small. More recently, work on two-phase stainless steels having a very fine grain microduplex structure has shown that the presence of on the order of 40 to 50 pct of a tougher second phase may lower the ductile-brittle transition temperature of the brittle phase by approximately 300°F. 5-7 In these alloys delaminations were seldom observed. The tougher second phase appeared to minimize the ease of both the initiation and the propagation of cleavage fractures. These results show that both the composite approach and the microduplex alloy approach are effective methods of preventing brittle fracture. Therefore, it was of interest to compare the fracture behavior of a microduplex alloy with composites made from the two-phases that were present in the alloy. To simplify this comparison the 50 pct Cu-50 pct Fe system was selected for study. At low temperatures the equilibrium tie line phases in this system are essentially pure ferrite and pure copper. A 50-50 alloy was cast and hot worked to produce a microduplex structure. Two types of composites were studied; laminated structures prepared by roll bonding iron and copper sheets of the tie line compositions, and an extruded powder composite made from high purity elemental powders. The fracture behavior of these materials was then compared. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloy Preparation. The 50-50 Fe-Cu alloy and the components for the roll bonded composites were prepared by vacuum induction melting 30-lb heats using electrolytic grades of iron and copper as charge materials. NEW demands for underground power in the Miami mine of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz. has brought about expansion of the distribution system for both ac and dc power. Progress in mining equipment and the normal changes in the mine were responsible for this increased demand. Early power requirements were for pumping and haulage. A 440 v ac power line down No. 5 shaft took care of a small pumping load and shaft station lighting, 275 v dc power was generated by motor generator sets on the surface, with a churn drill hole from surface to the 570 haulage level serving as a cableway. Electric lights were installed where power was available, and thus were confined to the haulage level and shaft stations. All industrial power in the Miami area is 25-cycle, which dates back to the hydroelectric generator installation at Roosevelt Dam in 1908-10. The Problem The main haulage level was moved to the 720 level and later, to the 1000 level, requiring a longer feeder line with the resultant voltage drop. Also, as mining progressed to the east, the churn drill hole for the power cable would have been subjected to subsidence cracks. The first extension in the use of electricity was in electric blasting. About 1935 the mine went to electric blasting, using the dc haulage current. Bringing electric current to the working levels of the mine for blasting greatly expanded the use of electric lights. Lights were used in tool rooms, powder and cap magazines, stairways, and other semi-permanent installations. Like all mines, Miami Copper began to study and experiment with mechanical mucking and transportation of ore by slushers, shakers, and belts during the late 1930's and early 1940's. At the beginning of the program, power was supplied from the haulage level 275 v dc system. Later it became necessary to run a cable, carrying 440 v ac power, down the No. 7 ventilation shaft. The increased use of power came about gradually, and many new problems were added, not the least being the introduction of switch boards and power cables into the working areas of the mine, where drifts and crosscuts take weight, and require repairs. The 25-cycle current presented special problems, in that 25-cycle transformers are twice as large and about 2V2 times as heavy as 60-cycle transformers of the same power output. DURING the war the mineral industry, and metal mining in particular, extended itself more than any other to attain the limit of its productive capacity. Likewise, probably no other industry went quite so far toward jeop¬ardizing its own economic future through depletion of material reserves. Once we looked to Europe for most of the manufactured goods we needed. Our own limited mineral requirements were easily supplied from mines near the Eastern seaboard. With expansion and industrialization, our mineral needs increased in proportion, and the centers of mining activity moved westward to Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Tri-State district, where seemingly inexhaustible high-grade deposits of iron, copper, lead, and zinc ores were opened and rapidly developed.

An analysis of heal conduction in the freezing of a solution has been performed. The case considered is the semi-infinite mass of solution, bounded by a con-stant-temperature plane with one-dimensional heat flow, Numerical cooling rate and freezing rate distributions hare been calcutated for the particular case of unidirectional freezing of aqueous solutions against. a cold copper chill. The solution at each level parallel to the chill surface is subjected to a spectra of frcezing rates; the freezing rate is inilially lour., passes through a maximum, and then decreases until solidification is camplete. Arange and maximum freeeing rates are inversely proportional to the square of distance from the chill surface. The temperature of the chill surface in contact with the solution remains constant during solidification. Experimentally, it is observed that deudrite sparing increases linearly with distance from the chill surface; in the light of heat -flow analysis this means that the dendrile spacing is imersely proportional to the square root of the maximum freezing rate. SOLIDIFICATION of liquids is accompanied by rejection of latent heat at the solid-liquid interface. The over-all rate of liquid to solid transformation is governed by the rate of heat extraction. Analysis of the heat transfer in the liquid during freezing is important since it determines the freezing rate and resulting structure. A considerable amount of work has been done on metallic systems since solidification is frequently a major step in processing metals. Unidirectional freezing from heat sinks has been treated by several investigators.1-4 Much of the work has been limited to the simpler case of substances such as pure metals which freeze isothermally at a unique transformation temperature. In this case the thickness of the solid zone y, next to a chill surface. is a parabolic function of the time. 8. where a and b are constants. Eq. |1| is a close approximation giving the progress of solidification for the case in which there is a small but finite thermal contact resistance at the interface between the freezing liquid and the chill.' It has been used with some success in connection with large steel ingots4 when the therma1 contact resistance is negligibly small (as is the case when water is brought into contact with the metal chill). The constant, b. becomes zero and Eq. [l] is then exact. even when the thermal properties of the chill and the freezing liquid depend on temperature. Analysis of unidirectional solidification of solutions is more complicated since the latent heat is evolved over a range of temperatures. Next to the all-solid zone in contact with the chill surface there is a solid plus liquid zone in which solidification takes place. Although the equations presented are considered quite general the numerical and experimental results are for freezing of aqueous solutions from a copper chill. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Solutions of potassium chloride, sodium chloride. and lithium chloride have been used. These solutions form a eutectic: a typical phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. A solution at its liquid us temperature is poured into a tygon tube mounted on a relatively large copper chill. The chill is immersed in a freezing mixture of dry ice and acetone at -70°C. A thermocouple connected to a high-speed recorder was mounted near the top of the chill to measure the fluctuation in the temperature of chill surface in contact with the solution. In this system the progress of solidification can be visually observed through the tygon tube. After the specimens freeze to a desired height they are removed from the copper chill and stripped from the tygon tube. Longitudinal and transverse sections are cut from the specimen for micrographic examination. Specimens in the form of a thin slice are mounted on a transparent glass slide by freezing small drops of water around the periphery. INTRODUCTION During the past few years emphasis has been placed upon methods of estimating the future expectancy of gas production from natural gas fields. Before technical methods were applied, the production expectancy over future years was based upon the knowledge of gas well behavior, learned through long experience and embedded in the "know-how" of men long in the gas producing business. It is doubtful that a technical study of future expectancy of a gas field or a group of fields was ever prepared for the preliminary planning of a natural gas pipe line system built prior to about five years ago. The decline in well production capacity was naturally recognized by all familiar with the business since its earliest beginnings more than 75 years ago. In 1953, the Bureau of Mines published Monograph Number 7, "Back-Pressure Data on Natural Gas Wells and Their Application to Production Practices," which gave to the industry the first technical analysis of the decline in production of individual gas wells. This method affords a means of estimating the future production in relation to decline in reservoir pressure. The demand for technical determination of expectancy of future gas productivity from fields or a group of fields led technical men to the application of the knowledge of well behavior to the problems. The decline in a well's ability to produce as pressures declined could be estimated by the use of the curve known as the "back-pressure potential curve" as developed by the Bureau of Mines. A field containing few, or even numerous, wells could be analyzed on the basis of the sum of potentials of all wells. In most studies of this nature, the problem is to estimate the rate of production that can be expected, not only from present wells but also, from wells that will in the future have to be drilled into the reservoir being studied. The "back-pressure potential" method requires that the following data be known or estimated: (1) Proved gas reserves. (2) Current shut-in pressures and rate at which shut-in pressures change with production. (3) Back pressure potential data on wells in the source of supply. (4) Ultimate number of wells which will supply gas, and their potential. (5) Limitations on productivity such as line pressures against which the wells will produce, friction drop in the producing string, and so forth. It is evident that the resulting estimate of gas available in each year for a future of say, 20 years, contains many uncertainties. While the method may have considerable merit for a field that is fully developed, it cannot be completely dependable in fields that are only partially developed. In such cases, some of the data upon which it is based can only be estimated or assumed. In the study of this problem during the past few years, a method has been developed which we believe has great merit, especially when applied to fields subject to substantial future drilling, and when applied to the study of fields which, on the average, appear to have characteristics similar, in general, to the average of the fields used in the development of the "yardstick" outlined herein. From an analysis of the production history of 49 reservoirs which are depleted, or nearly depleted, a curve has been constructed which shows the average performance of the reservoirs during the declining stages of production. When properly applied, this "average performance curve" can be used to determine the stage of depletion at which a reservoir or group of reservoirs will no longer be able to yield a given percentage of the original reserves. "AVAILABILITY" AND "AVAILABILITY STUDIES" The rate at which. a reservoir will yield its gas depends basically upon physical factors, such as the thickness and permeability of the sand, the effect of water drive, if any, and other conditions, and upon economic factors, such as the number of wells drilled. Within the ranges set by the physical conditions, a rate of delivery tends finally to become established. The rate (or range of rates) represents a balance between the interests of the operator, who desires the maximum return from his property and of the pipe line owner, who desires to maintain a firm supply for his market. This balance, which is influenced by the terms of the contract, determines the capacity which will be developed by the operator, and the time and rate at which the decline in production is permitted to occur. FLUORSPAR is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluor-spar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and. on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available.

In his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Warkl makes the following significant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of collector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater importance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a collector, and even without any reagent, provided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism.l(127).3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirin their results. The apparatus used to provide oxygen-free conditions for flotation has been described in detail by Ravitz and Porter. An atmosphere of purified nitrogen was maintained within the apparatus; all water and solutions used were freed of dissolved air, and could be transferred where desired by the use of nitrogen Pressure; nitrogen was used as the gaseous medium for flotation. The flotation cell was essentially a glass cylinder 15 cm. long and 4.6 cm. in diameter. Near the bottom was sealed a fritted glass filter, which broke up the gas into small bubbles, and 6 cm. above this filter was a side arm through which the froth overflowed. The pulp was agitated by a glass impeller, which entered the cell through a mercury seal. For each test 17 grams of galena and 75 ml. of water were placed in the cell, after which the speed of the impeller and the rate of gas flow were adjusted. Water was added gradually during the test to keep the froth level at the proper height. The mineral was prepared and cleaned in the following manner. Exceptionally Pure galena was crushed by hand on a clean bucking board, screened to —I50+ 200 mesh, and deslimed on a 200-mesh sieve with a fine spray of water. It was then boiled on a hot plate for a number of hours with several changes of the desired cleaning solution, after which both the solution and the mineral were placed in the "mineral flask" of the apparatus. The cleaning solution was drained off, and the mineral was boiled with oxygen-free water

While much geological work and drilling have been done in Venezuela, the incompleteness of geological evidence obtainable and the restricted areas in which drilling has been done make any estimates of oil resources extremely speculative. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data given are justified, in the belief that the ideas of a geologist familiar with the region are better than those of a promoter. The oldest beds of interest to oil men are those of the Cretaceous, which are well developed in eastern Venezuela and about parts of Lake Mara-caibo. In both cases, a hard massive limestone is overlain by a great thickness, most of which is shale. In the west, in places this shale is more than 2000 ft. (610 m.) thick, while in the east it-mag attain 3500 ft. (1067 m.). The limestone and parts of the shale are oil producing. In the east, the Tertiary where present is almost entirely covered by the Quarternary, but in the west it is well developed. In probable unconformity over the Cretaceous shales is found a series of sandstones and shales, which may be called the lower coal series. It is well developed southwest of the lake, where it is the oil container, and is probably the lowest series exposed east of the lake. Above this is the Pauji shale, which is probably the point of origin of all the oil east of Lake Maracaibo and in the State of Falcon. It has a thickness of about 3000 ft. (914 m.) in the Mene Grande region. The upper coal series is developed as a great thickness of sands, shales, and clays, with some partly consolidated limestone. Its thickness may be as great as 10,000 ft. It is the oil container of the Falcon-El Mene region and a probable location for oil in some of the area about the lake. It may or may not include the so-called Maracaibo series in which the oil is found at Mene Grande. Over much of Venezuela, the Quarternary is present in unknown thickness, which probably is not great. It obscures oil structure in all cases and presents the greatest hazard of oil exploration for the fields which probably exist below.

THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SCALE IN OPTICAL PYROMETRY AT the basis of optical pyrometry lie the theoretical and experimental data of the so-called blackbody. The black body is essentially a theoretical conception, with certain simple properties attributed to it -fundamentally, the property that its radiation at any temperature is a unique function of the temperature and does not involve any other variables. As a theoretical conception, an equation has been developed by Boltzmann connecting the total radiant power with the temperature, and another equation by Planck connecting the distribution of radiant power throughout the spectrum with the temperature. The integral of the latter with respect to wave-length conduces to the former and permits the evaluation of the constant c1 of the Planck equation, ass given in the form. J-= cl?-5 c2 (1) e ? T ? 1 assuming that the constant Q of the Stefan-Boltzmann law E=a(T4-T40) is known. The other constant c2 is arrived at by other methods, which will be discussed later. This equation for the black body lies at the foundation of optical pyrometry. To make the discussion complete, it should be stated that the theoretical black body is quite closely realized by a hollow enclosure with walls at a uniform temperature and radiating through a small orifice. The electrically heated black body, first introduced by Lummer and Kurlbaum, is an essential part of the equipment of a pyrometric research or testing laboratory. Numerous investigations have shown that its radiation conforms to that of the theoretical black body within experimental errors. Hence by operating the electrically heated black body at the melting point of some pure metal for which the temperature of melting has been determined on the vas scale. a standard is obtained for comparison with

INTRODUCTION. THE crystalline belt of the Atlantic Seaboard, south of New York, attains its maximum breadth of 220 miles on the northern border of North Carolina; and in this State it is most widely characterized by the occurrence of gold in workable deposits. Half a dozen auriferous belts have been recognized by Nitze and Hanna.1 These are, in the main, coincident in position and trend with the NE.-SW. zones of metamorphic slates and schists, which, more than any other feature, give character to the geological map of North Carolina. The central gold-belts, accompanying the main zone of slates and associated igneous rocks, are much the more important and persistent, and may be regarded as continuous northward across Virginia and southward into South Carolina. Tile eastern belt, on the other band, is the shortest and, economically, one of the least important. Its extreme length does not exceed 25 miles, the narrow band of slaty rocks to which it belongs passing, both NE. and SW., beneath the coastal-plain formations. But, although limited in area and production, this belt is, perhaps, comparable with the central belts or any part of the sea-board crystallines in the variety of conditions under which the gold occurs. It lies chiefly in the NE. part of Franklin county and the NW. part of Nash county, on the watershed of Fishing creek and other tributaries of Tar river. The elevation is between 400 and 500 ft. ; and the Tertiary peneplain has here an exceptionally perfect development, the reliefs separating the slightly incised stream-courses consisting of broad, flat-topped peneplain remnants, bounded by gentle lateral slopes.

Batch grinding tests at short times were made in a laboratory rod mill with 10 x 14 mesh quartzite in corn syrup-water mixtures of varying viscosity. The weight fraction broken and size modulus were found to be independent of viscosity up to 20 cp, but at higher viscosities breakage of the feed decreased while the size modulus increased. The mechanisms of the effect of viscosity are discussed on the basis of particle dynamics. The effect of viscosity of the suspending medium on grinding has not been accorded much attention, although both wet and dry grinding are used in bene-ficiation processes and the viscosities of water and air differ greatly. schweyerl investigated the rates of grinding of quartzite in a pebble mill with air, water and glycerol as the suspending media and found the rate in terms of new surface developed per thousand revolutions of the mill to be constant and dependent on viscosity up to 20,000 rev, but to decrease and become independent of viscosity for longer grinding times. Based on considerations of the drag forces exerted on suspended particles and on the grinding media under turbulent and laminar flow conditions, viscosity can be expected to inhibit the rate of grinding in a given system as it changes the flow conditions from turbulent to laminar. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of viscosity of the suspending fluid in the batch grinding of a homogeneous feed of uniform size for short residence times, a region of more practical interest than the long times investigated by Schweyer. In actual grinding operations, the viscosity of the fluid does not change, but the consistency (apparent viscosity) of the pulp increases with additions of fines. In this study the consistency of the pulp was not measured because it was thought that the grinding times were too short to alter the apparent viscosity appreciably.* *Minus 200 mesh quartz at 65% solids has an apparent viscosity of about 25 cp as measured by a simple consistometer. For the purposes of this study, the effect of viscosity on grinding can be shown sufficiently well on the basis of the cumulative weight fraction finer than the feed size at any time, and the size modulus, ku, of the finer than feed sizes. The parameter, ku, is obtained from a form of the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation. METHOD AND MATERIAL The grinding tests were accomplished in a laboratory rod mill 10-1/2 in. long and 8 in. bore with a 20-lb rod charge consisting of two 1-in., eight 3/4-in., eight 1/2-in., and eight 1/4-in. diam rods. The mill speed was 43.2 rpm. Charges of 400 g 10 x 14 mesh Wisconsin quartzite** were ground for times of 60, **Courtesy of Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Co. 120, 180 and 240 sec in 500 cc of fluid made up of corn syrup and water in measured proportions. The temperature of the pulp was measured immediately upon completion of grinding, and the size distribution of the quartzite was determined by a wash-wet-dry screening technique. Corn syrup was chosen because of its high viscosity and ideal viscous behavior, and also because its density is not greatly different from that of water. The viscosity of each fluid mixture was measured with an Ostwald viscometer at 25 C. and a correction was made for the temperature of the pulp according to tabulated values for sucrose solutions. The density differences were so small that they probably did not significantly affect breakage. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The conditions of the grinding tests, computed viscosities, weight fractions finer than the feed size and values of a and ku are listed in Table I. The values of a and ku were taken from the linear portions of the log-log plots of cumulative weight fraction finer vs size for the various grinding times. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as reported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be compared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a considerable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated. Procedure The alloys were cast in the form of cylindrical ingots, which were extruded into bar before being rolled. Some of the ingots were made in 2-in. diameter molds whereas all of the alloys of the previous paper were cast in 4.in. molds. For the larger ingots, the extruded bar was 2 by 0.140 in.; lor the 2-in. ingots, it was I by 0.100 in. Preliminary work indicated that strip rolled from both sizes of the bars would have substantially the same properties. The bar was rolled at some temperature in the range 400' to 800°F., for a total reduction of 50 per cent. The temperature and reduction per pass were so selected that no cold cracking occurred, but were such as to leave the metal in a semihard condition. The hot-rolled metal was annealed at several temperatures in the range 400' to 800°F.; it was also cold-rolled, and given solution and aging treatments. Two standard test bars corresponding to each treatment were pulled in tension, and the average was obtained. Twelve treatments, in all, were given each alloy. The properties of the annealed specimen having the highest percentage of elongation were selected to represent the alloy in the annealed condition. The properties of the cold-rolled specimen having the highest yield strength were selected to represent the alloy in the cold-rolled condition. These properties were then plotted against percentage composition by analysis. Smooth curves were drawn among the points, thus graphically averaging the results over the entire range studied. The percentage of elongation in the cold-rolled state was not plotted, since it was always low, and varied in an irregular manner with composition. It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. Chicago, care of Postmaster, New York. Qualifications required: Desire to serve in submarines. Degree of M. E. E. E., or E. M. Two and one-half years' practical experience in profession.
