CHARLES E. WILSON'S second quarterly report "Meeting Defense Goals" was encouraging on the outlook for the mining industry, as prolonged demand for minerals seems assured; but for the individual engineer things are not so rosy. Ten percent of the gross national product is going for defense but the gross national product has been increased by 9 pct since the national emergency was declared apparently a commendable rate of progress. The increased production does not seem to have had the stabilizing effect on prices it should and housewives have been revising domestic budgets upward on a quarterly basis. Government economists have reached the conclusion that more taxes and wage and salary freezing are necessary to counteract inflation.

Secondary fertilizer minerals are the mineral materials used to supply directly and indirectly the secondary and trace plant food nutrient needs of a fertilizer. Since few soils contain sufficient availability of all plant nutrients for their proper growth, man has prepared mixtures of plant food materials to correct these nutrient deficiencies. These mixtures or fertilizers, when added correctly to a soil, make it possible for abundant and economic crop growth. Many kinds of materials are used as sources of these needed nutrients. They come from natural and synthetic materials and minerals including many beneficiated byproduct compounds. A fertilizer consists largely of carriers of one or more of the three major plant foods, namely nitrogen (N), phosphorus-phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and potassium-potash (K2O). Many other nutrients are just as essential for plant growth as the three major plant foods. In fact, the efficient use of fertilizers today depends upon an adequate supply of all these other nutrients. Since these additional materials are usually removed from the soil by plants and supplied in fertilizer in less quantities than the major nutrients, they are called secondary and minor nutrients. In the early days these special nutrients were contained as impurities in the primary nutrient carriers. Today, fertilizers are made primarily from concentrated and synthetic materials which carry very few of these other essential nutrients. Consequently, many secondary and trace nutrient carriers, as salts, byproduct compounds and even minerals have to be added to fertilizers. Secondary Nutrient Carriers The secondary plant foods in fertilizer are next to the major nutrients in abundance. They are calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, silicon and sodium. Although many of these elements are added to a fertilizer as part of the major nutrient carriers, they are also added in special carriers. The large tonnage of these secondary nutrient carriers used in fertilizers represents only a small percentage of the total production of these materials. A fertilizer producer thinks in terms of materials which supply nutrients instead of minerals. Therefore, these materials will be discussed by elements. CALCIUM Soils need calcium to supply the nutrient needs of plants and maintain the desired physical and biological conditions in the soil. The available calcium is usually 40 to 80 pct of the exchangeable bases. (These bases are ones which can be displaced by other cations and determined quantitatively. They are then expressed as milliequivalents per hundred grams of soil-me.) Direct applications of lime materials such as burnt, ground or hydrated limes are the important sources of calcium for the soil. Most crops, especially legumes, have a high requirement for calcium. The average farmer does not use enough lime to maintain the proper level of available calcium. Hence, it is necessary for many fertilizers to contain soluble calcium materials for efficient use of the major nutrients. The following major nutrient carriers supply some calcium: calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate mixtures and cyanamid, and many of the phosphates. Both synthetic and natural gypsum are used in fertilizer production. Some crops such as peanuts require a large amount of soluble calcium. Gypsum is the important supplier of this soluble calcium. It is not applied with the fertilizer

D R. CHARLES W. ELIOT, the great educator and philosopher-he of the five-foot book shelf-recently gave expression to a thought I had long been cherishing as a private opinion, when he said: "It is obvious that standardization has become a dangerous adversary of progress in both education and industry." This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. I will quote only a few of his stanzas to illustrate his understanding of "A Standardized Existence" : A visitor at large, I stand Beneath a standard sky- Where everything is standardized To please the standard eye. Each tree is of a standard height, Each building is the same; Each man is uniform in height, And has a standard name. The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive, and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must" be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen, words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed:' "The superla¬tive is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word `very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as 'the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district', in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a `stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where .10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. It is all a matter of comparison; unless the reader knows your standards of depth, width, or richness, your `very' has no significance. "Where erosion was very rapid or oxidation very shallow"

AGAIN in 1945, the fourth year of World War 11, the American mining industry met the necessary demand made upon it for metals. Lack of labor prevented full production in some districts; maximum output, however, was maintained with the man power available. Development work and maintenance of mechanical equipment were neglected in favor of immediate production. Drafting of the younger men continued throughout the year, and the loss of personnel to war industries with higher wage rates continued up to "V-J" Day, Aug. 14. Labor shortages were more critical in 1945 than in 1944 though the man-power situation eased for some districts in the last quarter of the year. The trend in mining for the most part was to increase tons per man-shift by continued increased mechanization and refinements in methods and practices; larger equipment was installed where practicable. Labor shortages, together with the current higher wage rates, have advanced mechanization several years ahead of normal progress. The manpower shortage and the employment of inexperienced men had the effect of decreasing the average efficiency of the individual workman, but this condition was largely balanced by improved organization, greater efforts to improve labor relationship, and increased use of incentive pay systems. Safety instruction was emphasized, personnel contacts were increased, and more frequent foremen meetings were held to clarify contract agreements. Many of the large companies maintained schools to train green workmen.

IN connection with a study of the feasibility of establishing a blast-furnace industry in the Puget Sound region of Washington, possible sources of ore supplies along the Pacific rim were investigated. Many of the South American countries are known to contain important resources of iron, particularly Brazil and Chile. This latter country, because of its position on the west coast and the easy accessibility of its de- posits, appeared to be a logical place to consider as a potential supply for the Pacific Northwest. Accordingly, a brief field study was made of the deposits in September, 1924. Attention was confined to a limited number of properties on the west coast in the provinces of Antofagasta, Atacama, and Coquimbo. Passing consideration was given to the question of coal resources, and a short visit was made to a blast-funace plant at Corral in southern Chile which had been operated for a limited period as a producer of pig iron. In the following paper, a brief outline is given of the general observations made and of the salient facts rioted in the time available for the general study.

Any annual review of engineering progress in petroleum refining must of necessity include many features mentioned in earlier reviews. Advances do not spring mushroom fashion to wide acceptance overnight, but rather resemble rolling snowballs, gathering size and velocity as they progress. The new ideas of one year develop through the course of scattered adoption and testing during following years, to be ultimately discarded or to become an integral part of refinery engineering and operation. Polymerization and Cracking As an illustration, the publicity given to the polymerization and cracking of petroleum gases during the year has given many the impression that this is a new art. But patent and technical literature have disclosed active work on the problem dating back a decade or more and a unit capable of making 100 bbl. a day of polymer gasoline was constructed as early as 1930. Important strides have been made during 1935 looking to the more general commercialization of available processes, and some four important groups are furthering this work. In addition to the production of liquid products for inclusion as a constituent of commercial motor fuel, polymerization has also been a factor leading to the installation of a plant at the Houston refinery of The Shell Petroleum Corporation for manufacturing isooctane for aviation use, by making available dibutylene for catalytic hydrogenation Polymerization is not confined to unsaturated hydrocarbon gases as a source of raw material, and has been extended to include a preliminary decomposition of normal saturated gases under suitable heat and pressure conditions into the unsaturated types, which can then be used as raw material for the polymerization process. Thus there is opened up the possibility of eventually using large quantities of natural gas in the manufacture of high-grade motor fuels, although the early commercial growth will be largely on cracking still gases for economic reasons. Isothermal sections in the copper -rich region of the Cu-Si-Zn a1by system have been determined at 8473 760; 6003 and 482°C by means of microscopic examination with confirmatory X-ray diffraction work. The stability of the bee 0 phase decreases both with decreasing temperature and with increasing copper content. The silicon-n&apos;ch 0 phase decomposes upon quenching from high temperatures either by a martensitic or by a "massive" transformation, depending upon the solute content. A two-phase equilibrium is found to exist in the Cu-Si-Zn system between the hep < phase of the Cu-Si system and the bee ß phase of the Cu-Zn system. It is shown that the isothermal limits of the primary solid solution at 760; 6003 and 482°C are in part affected by the intermediate phases which follow them in the ternary system Possible electron-concentration and size effects upon phase boundaries are discussed. ALTHOUGH the mechanical and physical properties of silicon brasses have been measured in great detail, the factors which influence these properties are not well-understood, partly because the knowledge of the phase relationships in the Cu-Si-Zn system is limited. Gould and Ray1 studied the effects of silicon upon the hardness and structure of Cu-15 pet Zn and Cu-40 pet Zn alloys. They proposed an isothermal section at 800°C which was not based upon experimental data, since the binary phase diagrams had not been completely determined. Using Cu-Si-Zn alloys containing approximately 5 wt pet Si, vaders2 determined the boundary, at 750°C, between the copper-rich solid solution and an unidentified second phase. Masing and wallbaum3 examined a vertical section through the ternary diagram in the region between Cu-20 pet Zn and Cu-10 pet Si alloys, but they emphasized uncertainty about their data. Mima and Hasegawa4 studied the liquidus surface of Cu-Si-Zn alloys, phase transformations in high silicon-bearing (20 to 25 at. pet) alloys,5 and the phase relations in low silicon-bearing Cu-Si-Zn alloys.6 Their experiments were based upon thermal analyses and metallographic observations. The compositions of the phase boundaries were not determined with high precision, and the crystal structures of the phases were not reported. Because of uncertainties in the existing literature, it became of interest to determine more accurately the phase relations in copper-rich Cu-Si-Zn alloys. The crystal structures, stability, and phase boundaries of the primary solid solutions and several intermediate phases were determined, and the data are reported as partial isothermal sections.

In constructing a theory of the flow and hardening of metals, v necessarily make use of such phenomena as seem to be universal1 observed in metals. It is, therefore, a matter of concern to the con structors of such mnemonic systems if one or two of the group classific as metals show anomalous behavior. Such egregious phenomena observed in pure or nearly pure iron in the reaction of its mechanic properties to low-temperature annealing after cold work and to increase temperature of testing. In short it has been generally observcd tha iron, as an outstanding exception among metals, increases its hardnes and strength by low-temperature annealing after cold work,&apos; and alt by increase of testing temperature to the range of 150" to 300" C. The investigation here recorded was made then with the object ( ascertaining if similar phenomena were observed in high-purity iro and, if not, to the presence of which impurities these phenomena coul be traced. Experimental Procedure Three kinds of iron were taken for a study of hardening by rehcatin after cold work: 1. Vacuum-melted electrolytic iron; melted in an Arsem furnace in a magnesia crucible. That this iron was of high purity is indicated b a magnetic permeability above 20,000. 2. Electrolytic iron melted in air in a small laboratory furnace. 3. Armco iron, commercial material. These materials in the form of forged bars, annealed at 980" C. in vacuum, were reduced 30 per cent. in thickness by cold rolling and the reheated to temperatures varying from 100&apos; to 500&apos; C. The Rockwe hardness number was measured after each treatment. The results and shown in Fig. 1, curves 1, 2 and 3.

When I presented at the Chicago Meeting of the Institute, in May, 1884, a paper on Hadfield&apos;s manganese steel,* which had about that time been brought to the notice of steel manufacturers, I promised to furnish some physical tests of the steel for publication in the Transactions. The fulfilment of the promise then made has been delayed by various circumstances; but I have recently been put in possession of tests of this steel carefully made at the Woolwich, England, arsenal. Messrs. Hadfield & Co. prepared for the arsenal a series of twelve test-pieces, made from the same heat. An analysis of the steel gave the following results: Carbon,.........73 Silicon,.........37 Sulphur,.........06 Phosphorus,. .08 Manganese,...... 9.83 The test-pieces had been heated to a white heat and plunged into cold water prior to being put into the machine. The effects of additions of iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, and platinum on the mechanical properties of Fe-C alloys were determined. Each alloying element significantly improved the toughness. The results support the general correlation that substitutional alloying elements that stabilize austenite are beneficial to toughness, but the reason for this improvement is not obvious at this time. The effects of substitutional alloying elements on the toughness of steel has long been a subject of both practical and theoretical interest. Despite the obvious importance of this subject, there has been little progress toward understanding the mechanisms by which alloying elements influence the fracture behavior. In some cases the deleterious effects of alloying elements have been shown to be due to mechanisms such as embrit-tlement of prior austenite grain boundaries or inhibition of cross slip in the ferrite lattice. In other cases, however, the reasons for the change in properties are not clear. This is particularly true for elements, such as nickel, that improve the resistance to brittle fracture. Several investigators&apos;-3 have pointed out that there is a correlation between an alloying element&apos;s phase diagram with iron and its effect on toughness. Those substitutional alloying elements that stabilize austenite generally are beneficial to toughness, while ferrite-stabilizing elements generally are detrimental to toughness. The word "generally" should be emphasized, because exceptions to this rule can be found. Nevertheless, this correlation does offer a starting point at which to try to understand the effects of alloying elements on toughness. Thus far only two austenite-stabilizing elements, manganese and nickel, have been considered. In order to test the validity of this correlation several other austenite-stabilizing elements were evaluated. The noble metals, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, and platinum, have binary phase diagrams with iron similar to the Fe-Ni and Fe-Mn diagrams. That is, each element expands the austenite field, and also higher concentrations of each element produce martensitic transformations at low temperatures. Presumably then, each of these elements should improve the toughness of steel. The present study was conducted to determine if this were so. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made as l-lb air-induction melts using electrolytic iron and commercially pure noble metals. Each heat was initially deoxidized by a carbon boil, and further carbon was added to attempt to produce a 0.05 wt pct C content in each alloy. Before pouring, a final refining addition of 0.2 wt pct A1 and 0.1 wt pct Ti was made to each heat. The alloys were cast in a copper mold to produce ingots approximately 1 in. in diam and 5 in. long. The chemical compositions of the alloys tested are given in Table I. The residual nitrogen, aluminum, and titanium contents were all relatively constant at 0.003, 0.03, and 0.02 pct, respectively. FEW indeed are the sections of the country where trained or partly trained workers have not already been hired by a war industry plant or will be within the near future. Yet right in the midst of the heavily industrialized East lies the anthracite area, home of a million people, whose productive power has persistently been by-passed either by private industry or by the Government Plant Site Board. The chief reason given for not locating war plants in the area is that it is not within the strategic zone, but in numerous instances elsewhere this rule has been waived. Furthermore, the anthracite region is well protected on all sides by mountains and is at all points more than 100 miles inland. Continued depression in the anthracite industry and a crippling blow dealt by the war emergency to the production of silk and rayon goods, the chief manufacturing activity of the area, have resulted in a heavy migration, particularly of trained young workers, into near-by industrial areas. At least 50,000 people are currently unemployed, with the likelihood of an increase in coming months, and as many families are on relief.

THIS discussion of the future supply of lead refers only to the next ten-year period. Beyond that no prediction can be made that would be of sufficient accuracy to serve any purpose. When any commodity is by an unsatisfied demand forced to a higher price level, and the profits of those who are able to produce the commodity are greatly increased, there is awakened a new interest in the commodity on the part of both producer and consumer. The consumer attempts to reduce his costs by developing substitutes or assisting in the development of new sources of supply. Lead is now going through this stage. The lead producer is increasing development expenditure and searching for new mines. The consumer is developing substitutes as illustrated by the increasing use of zinc oxide as a pigment, and the use of dry batteries in radio sets. The search of the Ford interests for lead, by prospecting in Missouri and Idaho, is induced by the effort to develop a new source of supply. Considering the index figures of the Department of&apos; Commerce, it is evident that lead is on a substantially higher price level. For February, 1926, the index figure of lead is 209, while the general commodity price index is only 156, 100 being taken as the base for 1913.

MUCH attention has been directed to mine-air flow in recent years, more especially in Great Britian where there is frequent reference to a theory of fluid flow developed by English engineers. Briefly stated, this theory is that for similar passages of the same relative roughness, in which fluid flow occurs, the conditions of flow are exactly the same for equal values of the product W D V/ µ, where W = density of the fluid, D = diameter of the passage through which flow occurs, V = mean velocity of flow, and µ = absolute viscosity of the fluid flowing. This, the "Reynolds Criterion" of fluid flow, had its origin in the work of Prof. Osborne Reynolds&apos; more than 40 years ago. Later, Lord Rayleigh amplified the theory2 which has been conclusively proved for small pipes by the experiments of Stanton and Pannel3 over a large flow range, and by Lacey4 over a somewhat more limited range. Concordant results on small pipes have also been obtained by numerous other investigators with single fluids over more or less limited ranges of flow. According to this theory results in one medium, such as water, are immediately applicable to another, such as air; and experimental results on models are (theoretically, at least) applicable to full-scale designs. This is of great importance in aeronautics and can be of considerable value in mine ventilation research. Hodgson, in a recent paper,5 has outlined the application of this theory to mine-air flow and recent English experiments" on the resistance of a timbered mine airway have been expressed in this form.

T HE Institute of Metals Division and the Iron and Steel Division will meet jointly at the Stevens Hotel, Chicago, during the week of the American Metals Congress, Sept. 22-26. The Iron and Steel Di- vision of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Steel Treating and the American Welding Society meet at the same time. but the sessions have been arranged to conflict as little as possible. A rich program of papers and plant visits has been arranged for the members and guests of the two Institute Divisions. The Western World&apos;s gold reserves now exceed 23,000 mt (750 million oz), 65% of which exist in South Africa. Although several major mines are reducing production or closing because of depletion of reserves, new mines or expansions of existing mines are coming on-stream which will maintain an annual production of 684 mt (22 million oz) of gold well into the 1990s. These new operations by the South African mining industry represent the largest expansion since the opening of the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886. Included in three new mines being opened is that of Anglo American Corporation&apos;s Elandsrand plant, their fir& new gold venture in South Africa in seventeen years. Current average grade of South African mines is 8.2 g Au per mt (0.24 oz per st); and while the cost of the Elandsrand 135,000 mt (149,000 st) operation, including mine development, was about $314 million, it is estimated that the cost of a comparable operation started today and completed in the mid-1980s would be of the order of $480 million. New mines to exploit low-grade ore bodies are, therefore, likely to be few in number, and further expansion will undoubtedly be in the form of extensions to existkg operations where cash flow can be used to finance development. The authors&apos; first monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice," devoted a section to South African cyanide plant operation; and it is believed that this new volume would not be complete without a description of Elandsrand, South Africa&apos;s newest gold plant. The Elandsrand mine is adjacent to Anglo American&apos;s Western Deep Levels on the Far West Rand. The decision to go ahead with the development was taken in mid-1974 from the results of exploration drilling carried out over a period of .lo years. Results of 17 bore holes and 68 intersections of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef had indicated a gold-.bearing reef less than one meter thick at a depth of 1,800 to 3,000 meters (5,900 to 9,840 ft). Preliminary studies indicated a mine of 900 km (560 miles) of underground workings would yield 725,000 kg (23. 3 million oz) of gold from 60 million mt (66 million st) of ore to be milled over a period of 34 years. Eventually, when the mine is in full production, the total hoisting capacity will be 300,000 mt per month (331,000 st) for a milling capacity of 225,000 mt per month (248,000 st). The Elandsrand surface facilities have been built on a low range of 0 hills to take maximum advantage of the 10 slope in transporting ore
