SEC 4. Every candidate for election as a Member or Associate of the Institute must be proposed for election by at least three Members or Associates; must be approved by the Committee on Membership, as prescribed in the By-Laws ; and .must be elected by the Council. Cast ingots of 99.99 pct purity A1 and aluminum/copper alloys containing up to 2 pct Cu have been found to contain four zones rather than the three previously accepted, i.e., chill, colummar, and equiaxed zones. The fourth zone consists of a coarse dendritic layer across the top surface of the ingot which is open to the atmosphere. It is also found that the grains in the equiaxed region have a "cornet" shape, with a head which is coarsely dendritic and a tail which grew with the same structure as the columnar grains. Experiments using mechanical barriers, and others involving the elimination of the surface dendrile layer, have indicated that nucleation of the equiaxed zone is caused by the showering of dendritic particles from this surface dendrite layer. These particles are the dendritic heads found in the comet grains. A mechanism of nucleation and growth of these comet grains is put forward. Experiments with a number of other metals and alloys suggests that these conclusions may apply generally to ingots cast without the addition of nucleating agents, and solidified under normal conditions. THE macrostructure of cast ingots may contain the following three zones: i) a peripheral zone of fine equiaxed grains, commonly called the chill zone; ii) a zone of columnar grains extending inwards from the chill zone; iii) a central zone of equiaxed grains; these are normally larger than the chill grains. All three zones are not necessarily present in any particular ingot since their existence and magnitude depend upon the casting conditions and composition of the cast material. The mode of formation of zones i and ii is fairly well understood. However, the cause of the central equiaxed zone remains a matter of conjecture. Previous theories put forward to explain the mechanism of nucleation in the equiaxed zone have been examined by Chalmers1 and Winegard.2 At the time when the present work was carried out the most re -cent hypothesis was that due to Chalmers,1 who recognized more fully than previous workers that conditions in this zone during solidification were not conducive to nucleation. In his hypothesis, he suggested that nuclei were formed near the mould wall during the very early stages of solidification, and that they can drift into the central zone by convective motion. This was supported by evidence from experiments using mechanical barriers to stop the drift of nuclei. A similar hypothesis had previously been put forward by Genders.3 More recently, Jackson et al. 4 have observed that dendrite arms in organic compounds can melt off during solidification. They have postulated that this occurs in metals and alloys, and that the dendrite arms which have been freed from the main dendrite act as nuclei for the equiaxed zone. In the present work, critical metallographic examination has shown that there is a fourth zone in the macrostructure of cast ingots which is a dendritic layer over the top surface of the ingot. It is also shown that there is a relationship between this zone and nucleation of the equiaxed zone. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The alloys examined were prepared from super -purity aluminum of 99.99 pct min purity (spectro-graphically detected impurities of Cu, Fe, Si, and Mg) and copper of 99.98 pct min purity (spectrographically detected impurities of Si, Zn, As, Fe, Pb, Bi, Ni, Sn, Mn, Ag, Cr, and Al). Three compositions of ingots were examined, containing 0.0, 0.1, and 2 pct Cu, respectively. The alloys were melted in an alumina-lined salamander crucible using a medium-frequency electric induction furnace; when the appropriate casting temperature was reached, the alloys were cast without degassing or fluxing treatment. The mould used was made of electrode graphite and had the following dimensions: external diameter 6 in., height 9 in., with a mould cavity 8 in. deep and a diameter tapering from 5 in. at the top to 4 in. at the bottom. Casting temperatures used were generally in the order of 70" to 90°C above the liquidus and the mould was at room temperature before casting. Inserts kere placed in the mould cavity in some experiments. These consisted of either an 18-g stainless-steel tube of 2 in. diam held axially in the mould i in. off the bottom and extending 1 in. out of the top of the mould or a "trap-door" barrier of stainless-steel gauze of 24-mesh held horizontally in the mould 31/2 in. down from the top. The construction of this insert is shown in Fig. 1. All inserts were preheated prior to casting to prevent chilling. RESULTS The macrostructures of ingots of the three compositions are described, in terms of the three generally recognized zones, in Table I, and illustrated in Figs. 2(a) to (c). The most interesting observation in this table is that relating to the shape of the equiaxed grains, which were not in fact equiaxed but of almost tear-drop shape. Closer examination of these grains showed that each consisted of a head which had a coarse dendritic structure and a tail which always grew in the opposite direction to heat flow, and which had the same structure as that of the columnar material of the ingot concerned; i.e., in the pure aluminum and 0.1 pct Cu alloy it was cellular and in the 2 pct Cu alloy it was cellular-dendritic. Identification of original cast grains was greatly hampered in the super-purity aluminum ingots, and to a lesser degree in the 0.1 pct Cu alloy,

YELLOWKNIFE, the most northerly Canadian gold mining district, is once more in the throes of a boom. Touched off by spectacular and well-publicized diamond-drilling results on the property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd., mining companies and the general public are competing for mining claims and for the shares of companies owning mining claims in the area, with little regard for values. Such a stock-market boom has various unfortunate consequences but undoubtedly one beneficial result is that considerable amounts of money are made available for serious development. The Yellowknife mining area lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, in the Northwest Territories, at a latitude of approximately 62°30' north. The topography is a low-relief phase of that usual in the Canadian Laurentian shield. Roughly, one third of the surface is lake-covered, one third muskeg or overburden, and one third is bare

The address of the evening was given by the Rev. Edward Burns Martin, on "Safety and Citizenship," and was followed by informal talks on safety, health and citizenship.

THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. THE annual meeting of the Arizona Section was held at the Pioneer Hotel in Tucson on Dec. 10, 1951. Registration and ticket sales for the social functions started at 8:00 am and lasted throughout most of the day. There were 489 registrations, consisting of 216 members, 64 students, and 209 guests. Chairman Harrison Schmitt opened the Mining Geology Div. meeting and a short business session was held at which Dr. Charles Anderson of Prescott, Ariz. was elected chairman and Seton Williams of Tucson was elected secretary for 1952. Dr. B. S. Butler was program chairman with R. B. Mulchay as co-chairman at the technical program. Eldred Wilson spoke on Oxidation and Water Levels at Some Arizona Mines. George Kiersch spoke about Economic and Engineering Significance of Ground Water Localization in Limestones - Big Bend Country, Texas. Harrison Schmitt gave The Definition and Use of Terms in Mining Geology. These talks were followed by discussions. E. N. Pennebaker, A. D. Wandke, and H. Schmitt gave informal talks on foreign trips made during 1951, the meeting was then adjourned.

Eight members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests were present. Vice-president Henry S. Drinker presided. The President was authorized to appoint delegates to a meeting, on May 16, of the League to Enforce Peace. The Joint Conference Committee reported that the American Institute of Metals had accepted the invitation to form the Institute of Metals Division of this Institute. The Committee on Publications of the Institute of Metals was added to the Committee on Publications of the A. I. M. E. Exchange of one volume of Transactions of the A. I. M. E. at reduced price to members of the British Institute of Metals was authorized, in return for the reduced price given to our Institute of Metals Division on the annual proceedings of the British Institute.

ELECTROLYTIC zinc plants of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are located adjacent to the present city limits of Corpus Christi, Texas. The original plant commenced operations during 1942, and is designed for the production of special high grade zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates.' Subsequent changes include the erection of an additional acid plant during 1950, and additions for increased generating and production capacity during 1951. New Electrolytic Plant—The new electrolytic plant is a separate unit erected for the treatment of densified fume produced at Asarco plants located in El Paso, Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico. Construction was completed and operation commenced during June, 1953. Decision for the erection of a separate plant for the treatment of densified fume is based on several factors. One of the principal reasons is the assurance of continued production rate of the original plant, which might have been jeopardized by combined treatment of calcine and fume. Of equal importance is the advantage of locating a plant on a site with adequate space for eventual expansion. General Description—The new plant for the treatment of densified fume consists of four main buildings for the following operations: storage and grinding of fume, leaching and purification, electrolyzing and casting, and rectifier units. Auxiliary buildings include a baghouse, reagent storage, and a lunch room. Leaching of ground fume with electrolyte from the cells is a batch type operation in tanks equipped with mechanical agitators and weightometers. Completed leaches are pressure filtered, the resultant residue being recovered for shipment to El Paso by conventional use of thickeners, drum type vacuum filters, and a direct-fired dryer. Filtrates from the filter section are purified in mechanically agitated tanks, filtered after completion through plate and frame presses, and then pumped to an evaporative type cooling tower. Solution discharged from the basin of the cooling tower is collected in storage tanks for use in the cells. The cool purified solutions are pumped as required from storage to the solution circuit for circulation of electrolyte through the cells. Except for the addition of purified feed solution and withdrawal of electrolyte for leaching, the circulating system for the cells is essentially a closed continuous circuit that includes the use of evaporative cooling towers for control of solution temperatures. Aluminum cathodes and Ag-Pb anodes are used for electrolysis, which is maintained at a current density of about 82 amp per sq ft. Cathode zinc produced is melted in a gas-fired reverberatory furnace and then cast into slabs on a straight line casting machine. Unloading and Storage—Fume produced by the Chihuahua plant is shipped in box cars, and fume by the El Paso plant in hopper bottom dump cars. Shipments as received are weighed on a 7 5-ton capacity railroad scale, sampled, and then moved over one of the two unloading hoppers with a car puller. The cars are then unloaded with mechanized equipment, a car scoop being used for unloading of box cars and a car shaker for the hopper bottom cars

George Ellery Hale, Director of the Mount Wilson Observatory and Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, who has been for the last ten years a Correspondent of the Academie des Sciences, Institut de France, has received the unusual honor of election as Associe Etranger, taking the place of Adolph von Baeyer, declared vacant by the Academy. The Foreign Associates are limited to twelve, and the high distinction has been held by only two Americans-Simon Newcomb and Alexander Agassiz. The National Research Council upon the presentation and acceptance of. Dr. Hale's resignation as its Chairman and the election of James R. Angell as his successor, created and bestowed in perpetuity upon Dr. Hale the title of Honorary Chairman in recognition of his services to the National Research Council and to Science and Research by indefatigable efforts that have contributed so largely to the organization of science for the assistance of the Government during the war, and the augmentation of the resources of the United States through the newly intensive cultivation of research in the reconstruction and peace periods that follow.

In the withdrawal of fluids from tilted aquifers it is of value to be able to predict pressure patterns during the course of the pressure decline. As an example of this, in the displacement of fluids from oil reservoirs being produced by water-drive, prediction of the reservoir pressure is an important factor in fixing production rate. The prediction of pressure patterns in the depletion of an inclined aquifer has conventionally been made by solving the well known flow equations for the pressure Patterns in a horizontal aquifer, and correcting these patterm for the pressure difference due to the hydrostatic head associated with the vertical distance between a point in the horizontal aquifer and the corresponding point in the tilted aquifer. Inasmuch as the equation describing flow in tilted strata is different from that for horizontal flow. there was question as to the validity of the simple corrective procedure current1y in use. To examine the magnitude of error made using this procedure, an inclined aquifer was chosen for which the error was expected to he large, and the equation for flow in this tilted stratum was solved numerically. The results of the conventional procedure of correcting the solution of the equation for horizontal flow was compared with the solution of the correct equation by studying the difference between predicted pressures by the two methods. Three forms of the hydrostatic head correction were studied. The results for all three forms of the head correction are similar. The error in the approximate solution is quite dependent on the position of the horizontal aquifer with respect to the inclined one. The error is greatest at the producing end ad increases with amount of fluid withdrawn. The magnitude of the errors is not large if a good choice is made for the position of the horizontal datum. The most satisfactory position for the datum in all cases is near or slightly about the mid-point of the inclined stratum. Use of the best approximate method studied with the best datum tested yielded predicted pressures in error no greater than 7 psi. INTRODUCTION The movement of water by expansion from an aquifer to displace fluids from a contiguous oil reservoir was first recognized over 20 years ago.9 Since that time much work has been done to relate this mechanism to reservoir behavior mathematically. The result of this effort on the part of many workers has led to an understanding of underground fluid movement which has enabled us to follow and predict the behavior of the water-drive reservoir. One reason that good progress has been made in the application of mathematics to the study of pressure patterns and water movements in aquifers has been that the differential equation which describes this process is of a relatively simple form. The equation for the isothermal, horizontal, viscous flow of water through homogeneous sandstone is identical with that for the diffusion of heat through homogeneous solids, and this equation and means of obtaining solutions for it with many types of boundary conditions have been studied extensively. E. W. Parker, Washington, D. C.: In connection with Mr. Blauvelt's paper, a brief sketch of the development of by-product coke-making in the United States may prove of interest. The first radical departure from the prevalent beehive oven to the by-product retort oven was inaugurated in 1891 by the Solvay Process Company, at Syracuse, N. Y. In that year was begun the construction of 12 Semet-Solvay ovens, which were completed in 1893. During 1893 these ovens produced 12,850 tons of coke, an average.of a little over 1000 tons each. In the following year the production amounted to 16,500 tons, not quite 1400 tons per oven. These 12 ovens were in reality an experiment, the success of which was attested by the addition to the same plant of 13 more ovens, begun in 1895 and completed in 1896. They were followed by the construction in 1896 of 25 ovens of the same type at Sharon, Pa., and 50 more at Dunbar, Pa. These 100 ovens represented the total number of Semet-Solvay ovens completed and in operation up to the close of 1897. The construction of 180 more, however—120 at Ensley, Ala., and 60 at Benwood, near Wheeling, W. Va.—was begun in 1897. The plant for the latter is laid out for double the number stated. The 60 ovens begun in 1897 have now been completed. An initial plant of Otto-Hoffman ovens was built at Johnstown, Pa., in 1895, and began making coke in 1896. One hundred and twenty additional ovens of this type were begun in 1896 and completed in 1897 at Glassport, near McKeesport, Pa. During the present year 100 Otto-Hoffman ovens are being added to the plant at Johnstown, and 400 of the same type are in course of construction at Everett, near Boston, Mass. The plant at the latter place is laid out for a total of 1200 ovens.

IT IS common to blame irregular assay results upon volatilization and much has been written upon the subject, but there is no. real evidence that, in a properly conducted assay, the loss of either gold or silver by volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result, even when, arsenic or antimony may be present. Bulk assays of flue dust from assay muffles have been published, but the data given are totally insufficient to even approximate the volatilization from a single assay; and such figures as we have indicate the volatilization to be extremely small. Diligent search in the literature and wide inquiry among assayers and instructors have failed to produce a single case where the litharge volatilized in making an assay has been collected and assayed for gold and silver. Having attempted to do this, with most indifferent success, I am not surprised that this has not been done. While various textbooks give volatilization as a cause of loss in cupellation, it may safely be said that in the rare cases where this volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result it is due to excessive temperature. Percy1 says "The loss of silver by volatilization during cupellation is very slight (unless the temperature has been much too high), and may be disregarded." This statement is repeated by the Beringers2 and Smith,3 who includes gold with silver. Mitchell4 says the litharge fume rarely contains over one ten-thousandth of silver. Campredon5 says that at a proper temperature no silver is lost by volatilization.

Electrical model studies have been made of the effect of unsymmetrical vertical fractures on production cnpacity. The study war restricted to the case of two vertical fractures originating at the well and extending out into the reservoir for various distances and orientations. The ratio of the short fracture length to the long fracture length was varied from 0.1 to 1.0 in successive studies. The angle separating the two fractures was varied from 0 to 180 degrees. The most effective fractured patterns were obtained when the fractures were oriented 180 degrees. It was found that when the total fracture length was equal to 0.2 of the drainage radius, the increase in production capacity may vary from approximately 1.55 to 1.95. depending upon the ratio of the short fracture length to the long fracture length and the angle separating the two fractures. If the total fracture length were 0.5 of the drainape- radius. poroduction cavacitv., increases varving 1.95 to 2.65 were observed, depending on the angle between the fractures and the ratio of the .short fracture length to the long fracture length. The fractured well production capacity decreased aPproxin?ately I to 10 per cent as the angle separating the fractures was varied from 180 to 90 degrees. It was dependent on the particular fracture. The commercial application of reservoir fracturing techniques has caused an interest to be expressed in the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on production capacities. Some data have indicated that substantially vertical fractures may be created in some reservoirs. It is believed that the fractures are possibly unsymmetrical, that is, one fracture may extend due north 100 ft and a second fracture on the opposite side of the well may extend south or southeast only 50 ft. The total fracture length, ratios of the lengths and angles of separation may vary considerably. For this reason variations in these factors were considered. The study was restricted to the case of two vertical fractures originating at the well and extending out into the reservoir. It is not known that such will occur in a reservoir, but the results may be of value in interpreting or studying fracturing applications. PROCEDURE An electrical model was used in this study of the effect of unsymmetrical vertical fractures on production capacity, A wooden tank 30 in. in diameter and approximately 2 in deep was coated with paraffin wax. "The mountains of Utah contain one of the largest deposits of high grade bituminous coal in the world. According to the United States Geological Survey, there are 13,130 square miles of land known to contain workable coal, and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. More remarkable than the extent of the coal fields is the thickness of the coal beds. Over three-fourths of the output of coal in Utah is recovered from beds ranging from 8 to 17 feet in thickness, as compared to one-eighth of the output of the entire country from such beds. In 1917, Utah mined one-third of its coal from seams at least 16 feet thick, compared to one-half of one per cent of the total bituminous output of the country from like seams.Coal at Wales, in Sanpete County, and in the vicinity of Coalville, Utah, was, it is reported, the first discovered by white men in the state. Wales claims the distinction of having produced the first coal mined in Utah. Two men, who had been coal miners in Wales, learned of the coal from an old Indian chief who called it ""rock that would burn."" In 1857, the town of Wales was founded and coal mined, and in 1858 some coke was manufactured and hauled by ox team to Salt Lake City. South of Wales is Castle Valley, in Wasatch Plateau field. From 50 to 60 miles of the Old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Monterey, California, lies in Castle Valley. The coal in this field may or may not have been known at the time the trail was used extensively. The first published reference to this coal, however, was made by a party of the Corps of Topographic Engineers in their journal for October 11, 1853.After the completion of the Union Pacific railroad in 1869, mining on a commercial scale was attempted. In 1876 the Utah and Pleasant Valley railroad commenced operations between Scofield, in Carbon county, and Springville, Utah county, and following the year 1878, when the Rio Grande Western railway began construction through the Carbon county field, development increased until in 1900, when large smelters commenced operations in Salt Lake valley and gave coal mining in Utah an impetus that first carried it to an annual output of a million tons. During the past fifteen years many new mines have been opened, and with the construction of the Utah railway, an exclusive coal road, from the properties of the United States Fuel company in Carbon and Emery counties to connect with the Union Pacific system at Provo, the state reached a maximum production of 6,005, l 99 tons in 1920."

The anomalous behavior of hydrogen in iron is examined and a new model is proposed It is postulated that hydrogen single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each other. When the binding enthalpy of the di-interstitial, B, is assumed to be about 10 kcal per mole, the predicted temperature dependence of the solubility agrees reasonably well with the reported data. Effective diffusiuity is calculated assuming the di-interstitials to be immobile. Since the number of mobile single interstitials is greatly reduced at lower temperatures, the effective diffusivity is decreased. A good agreement in the temperature dependence of diffusivity between theory and experiment is provided with B - 10 kcal per mole. The predicted diffusivity is also a function of total concentration of hydrogen and this appears to be Partly responsible for the large scatter in the reported data. HYDROGEN is known to form an interstitial solid solution with iron.''' At elevated temperatures, it has been well-established that hydrogen enters iron in the dissociated form and occupies the interstices, and that diffusion of hydrogen in iron is via the interstitial mechanism. The concentration, c, permeability, P, and diffusivity, D, of hydrogen in iron have been separately determined and are consistent with each other under the steady-state condition for temperatures above approximately 400°C; that is, the relationship P = c-D holds. At lower temperatures, however, anomalous behavior of hydrogen in iron has been observed by many investigators. The results of experimental studies4-'' of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron are summarized in Fig. 1, in which the values of D are plotted against the reciprocal temperature. Although there is an increasing divergence in observed values of D with decreasing temperature, the values of D at temperatures below approximately 200°C are definitely small as compared with the extrapolation from high-temperature data. The lines shown bracket the region containing the most probable data. The observed values of c6," are plotted against the reciprocal temperature in Fig. 2, where the dashed lines represent Geller and sun's'' most probable isobars at 1 and 100 atm. At high external hydrogen pressure and low temperatures, the values of c observed are higher than those expected from high temperature data. It is generally accepted that certain trapping mechanism is responsible for the anomalies, but the nature of the trapping mechanism has not been clarified. Various types of hydrogen traps were suggested in the literature, such as "rifts" in the lattice dislocations, voids, microcracks, and so forth. However, no quantitative account of the observed behavior has been given in terms of these trapping mechanisms. Formation of methane in hydrogen-charged steel was found by ~odgurski." This appears to explain the existence of the so-called "residual" hydrogen,4 but not the observed anomalies of hydrogen in iron. McNabb and Foster' proposed a mathematical analysis in terms of a trapping mechanism. However, the physical significance of the traps was not clarified. The necessity of evaluating five parameters in their theory made comparison with experiment difficult. In the present paper, a model is proposed in which the anomalous behavior of hydrogen is attributed to the formation of hydrogen di-interstitials at lower temperatures. In this model, it is postulated that single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each other. (The hydrogen di-interstitial is to be distinguished from a hydrogen molecule which may exist in voids.) It can then be shown that most of the anomalies can be explained by assuming that the di-interstitials are virtually immobile and that the binding enthalpy of the di-interstitial, B, is approximately 10 kcal per mole. Predictions of the theory agree with the available experimental data reasonably well. THE blast furnace of the Columbia Steel Corpn., at Ironton; Utah, was put in blast April 30, 1924, and its operation has presented some interesting problems. The coke for the furnace is furnished by 33 Koppers Becker type ovens of 15 tons capacity each. The coal is shipped from the company's mine at Columbia, Utah, which is approximately 123 miles from Ironton, and is probably the highest volatile coal that is being coked for blast furnace use in this country.
