THERE has been a running discussion over the past several years with respect to the life and adequacy of our natural gas reserves. Some of the experts agree on one phase of the subject at least-that eventually it will be necessary to augment deliveries of natural gas in the northern markets by the development of a more or less comparable synthetic gas made from coal. The purpose of this paper is to point out: 1. It may be later than a good many people think-the demand for addi¬tional domestic and commercial pipeline gas in at least one section of the North will probably be felt rather keenly before an adequate synthetic pipe¬line-gas project, developed on economic lines, could be completed, even if initiated in the near future. 2. The evidence is considerable that such a project would be technically sound and economically self-supporting, although the margin of profit at first might be so small and the magnitude of an economic enterprise so great -that financing would be impossible without Government aid in some form or other. The part of the country referred to is the heavily populated section in the northeast of the United States. To simplify an examination of the situa¬tion, let us take the potential marketing areas within range to the north and east of the three pipelines: 1. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. as it enters Erie County, New York state. 2. Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation just before the tap that sup¬plies the general Philadelphia area. 3. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation as it enters the state of New Jersey. The sources of gas for these three pipelines are in Texas and Louisiana. The ultimate maximum combined capacity of the three lines at the points stated is approximately 1,200,000,000 cu ft per 24 hr at the maximum load factor probable of attainment in normal operation. The areas supplied by the three lines north and east of the points stated, or assumed as eventual markets, are: 1. Central New York state, from Buffalo to Albany (both inclusive).

The occurrence of Laves phases (AB,) in various binary alloy systems has been reviewed in recent papers.13 Iron forms Laves phases with Sc-, Ti-, V- and Cr-group elements. However, two of the corresponding Laves phases with cobalt, namely MoCo, and WCo,, are missing. Nickel forms binary Laves phases with Sc and Y, but not with any Ti-, V-, or Cr-group element. These conditions are schematically illustrated in Table I. That electron concentration is a significant factor in determining which type of Laves phase is formed in a given case was recognized long ago by Laves and Witte,4 This concept has been more recently applied to Laves phases formed by transition ele-ments. It now appears that the average electron concentration (average number of electrons per atom outside of the closed shells of the component atoms) may be an important factor also in determining whether or not a Laves phase can occur at all in a given system. As shown in Table I, in the transition element systems considered Laves phases are absent at electron concentrations of 8, or larger (to the right and below the double line in Table I). These absences clearly cannot be accounted for on atomic size considerations, as evidenced by the many inconsistencies apparent in Table 11. While the ideal radius ratio for Laves phases is 1.222, in the systems which do have Laves phases the ratios of CN 12 radii range from 1.10 to 1.46. The consistent absence of Laves phases at RA/RB< 1.10 might be attributed to the low values of these radius ratios. However, Table II shows that absences also occur irregularly throughout the radius ratio range covered. In a previous paper7 it was concluded that, in transition element systems forming u-phases, silicon may act as an acceptor of electrons, thus stabilizing the u-phase at electron concentrations higher than

IN times like these, the A. I. M. E. and similar societies have their greatest usefulness. . . . Individuals and companies acting alone in the development of public opinion are merely voices crying in the wilderness. United and organized they make a great force that can and does influence public action. . . . What part, if any, then, shall the A. I. M. E. take in these great stabilization processes of civilization? Shall it help to give direction and force to scientific knowledge which comes within its field of activity or shall it merely develop more of it? . . . Is it the A. I. M. E.&apos;s function to help bring system, order and direction out of this situation so that the world can again have forward economic movement, or should it rest on its oars until other agenciess develop that public understanding and direction so necessary for economic progress? As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petro¬leum Division, they are to discover and promote knowl¬edge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends on the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas.

BASED upon an instrumental improvement, a new development has taken place in the art of electrical prospecting, and some remarkable results have already been obtained with regard to potential exploration. In order to visualize the importance of this development, it is deemed advisable to review briefly the fundamental facts about potential surveys. Potential exploration may be carried out qualitatively or quantitatively. Qualitative investigations are made by determining and plotting on a map points of equal potential, whereby any anomalies are revealed, without, however, much clue to their magnitude. Quantitative investigations determine the variations of potential or potential drop, and thus show not only the location of the anomalies, but also their magnitude. Figs. 1 to 6 illustrate the influence of simple types of ground inhomo-geneities, assuming one effective exciter potential only. Such a condition can be closely realized by connecting an electric current source to two electrodes, one of which, is located at a great distance. Assuming uniform ground resistivity, the resultant potential distribution may be represented by concentric spheres. Any change from the normal condition causes a characteristic distortion of the spheres, which becomes different for different types of resistivity variation. The series of Figs. la to 6a illustrates schematically results of qualitative investigations and series 1b to 6b results of quantitative investigations. Figs. 1 and 2 picture the well-known case of local resistivity variations normally encountered in ore prospecting. Figs. 3 and 4 show the reactions caused by more or less vertical resistivity contacts and Figs. 5 and. 6 refer to the problem of ground-water and bedrock investigations where the resistivity contact is horizontal or nearly so. It is evident from Figs. 5a and 6a that qualitative measurements do not permit an identification of such general geological features as widespread horizontal strata, because the resultant contraction or expansion of the equipotential circles at the surface cannot be recognized without quantitative determinations. RECENTLY, cases of coexisting ordered and disordered phase equilibria have been reported among face-centered cubic metals,1"3 but not on body-centered cubic systems.4 McQueen and Kuczynski5 showed a single line as the boundary between ordered solid solution of Fe3Al type and corresponding disordered solution in the Fe-A1 phase diagram based mainly on dilatometric and magnetic measurements. Such a single line would indicate a second or higher order transition. or an absence of coexisting order and disorder. The writer found previously a two-phase equilibrium region at 800°C consisting of ordered and disordered solid solutions of Fe3Si in a matrix of approximately 1-6 wt pct Si (Fe3Si is of 14.3 wt pct Si). A similar two-phase region of ordered and disordered Fe3Al solid solutions might be expected if the similarity between Fe3Si and Fe3Si structures hold true. In the present investigation, a wire of 22 at. pct Al, balance Fe and 0.0513 cm in diameter was subjected to electrical resistivity measurement in vacuum as a function of temperature between 300 and 800°C, see Fig. 1. There was excellent agreement between data taken on heating and on cooling: no hysteresis was observed. The Curie temperature was determined to be 640 °C which agrees with the finding by McQueen and Kuczynski.5 But in addition, there were two transitional points in the resistance-temperature plot at 510oC and 400 "C. The former is thought to be a connection with the transition from disordered state to a coexisting order and disordered equilibrium state; while the latter, from such coexisting state to ordered state. Fig. 2 shows a phase diagram where the suggested two-phase region lies between dotted lines. The solid lines are those of McQueen and Kuczynski.5 Since these authors found only a single-phase boundary between ordered and disordered Fe3 Al, it would seem likely that the dilatometric method used by these authors was not sufficiently sensitive to resolve the ordering reaction into the two-phase boundaries. In addition, their phase diagram conflicts with the statement they make on P. 1 of their paper: "The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3A1 is a first order reaction." The suggestion of coexisting order plus disorder in Fe3A1 must be considered tentative until confirmed by high-temperature X-ray examination. If

The various factors considered in recommending the initiation of a gas injection project in the southern portion of the Cedar Lake Field are discussed. Performance history under gas injection operations is reviewed and these data are analyzed, utilizing both the material balance method and the fractional flow and frontal advance expressions. Results of the analysis of the performance data indicate that the injected gas has contacted and affected at least 60 per cent of the reservoir and a substantial increase in ultimate recovery can reasonably be expected. By holding the reservoir pressure appreciably above the bubble point, the well productive capacities have been maintained substantially above the level predicted for primary operations. The analysis of the Cedar Lake project suggests that in certain limestone reservoirs, at least, the probable success of gas injection cannot be predicted simply from ohservation of permeability distribution throughout the pay section, as indicated by core analysis data, on either one or a number of wells. Further, the performance of this particular project fails to indicate any basis for classifying carbonate reservoirs in general as being inherently unsuited to a dispersed type gas injection program, thus indicating that each reservoir should be considered on its own merits, regardless of the composition of the reservoir rock. From the study of these data it was apparent that there was a critical need for supplementing the natural reservoir energy in order to maintain well productivities and obtain the maximum ultimate oil recovery. Accordingly, detailed engineering studies were made of the various methods of secondary recovery which might be applicable. As a result of these investigations, the decision was made to initiate a gas injection program of sufficient intensity to maintain reservoir pressure at approximately 600 psia, or some 274 lb above the bubble point pressure of 326 psia. A full scale dispersed type gas injection program has been in operation on leases of the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. in the southern portion of the field for nearly five years, and sufficient performance data are now available to evaluate the benefits which have been derived from this project. It is the primary purpose of this paper to analyze the performance data for the Cedar Lake gas injection project and to point out the significance of the ohserved behavior with respect to certain hypotheses which have been advanced in recent years concerning the probable success of gas injection projects in limestone reservoirs. This paper properly should be regarded more on the order of a progress report, inasmuch as some revision in interpretation will undoubtedly be required from time to time as additional performance data are obtained, although the satisfactory performance of the project to date leaves little doubt as to the ultimate success of gas injection in the Cedar Lake Field. As a result of the success of the project to date, a unit was formed in the southern part of the field, effective March 1, 1951, for the purpose of continuation of the gas injection program. Participants in this unit are the Mid-Continent Petroleum Co. and Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. GEOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY The Cedar Lake Field is located in the northern portion of the Midland Basin area as shown in Fig. 1. The southwest portion of the field lies within a playa, or dry salt lake, which covers an area of approximately eight square miles. As might be expected, it was this lake which furnished the inspiration for the name of the field. Except for its value as a salt water disposal pit, this lake has succeeded only in magnifying the difficulties in developing this portion of the field. Typical of this section of West Texas, the area in general is relatively flat and has a semi-arid climate. The localized structure which favored the accumulation of oil is an anticline with approximately 100 ft of closure. The major axis of the structure extends in a general southeast-northwest direction. Originally this structure was defined by seismograph data, which have been subsequently confirmed by development. In general, the geologic column is typical of that found throughout the basin. From the surface to depth of approximately 1,800 ft, surface sands and undifferentiated red beds. probably Triassic. are encountered. Below this point to the producing horizon, all formations are of the Permian age.

As a practicing mining engineer, I face many rock mechanics&apos; problems daily and would like to mention one or two examples to illustrate the current gap between laboratory investigations and actual field problems. I would like to endorse Dr. Obert&apos;s suggestion that more field measurements and observations should be undertaken. There is an ever-increasing body of data beginning with Hast&apos;s results in Sweden,l then measurements at Elliot Lake, Canada, and so on, including our own measurements at White Pine, which clearly indicate that the horizontal stresses underground are often at least as large as the vertical stresses. Visual obsenation of the deformation of roof and pillars (including failure due to horizontal compression) also demonstrates that the horizontal stresses are often most important. Yet almost every laboratory investigation begins with the assumption that the only stresses acting are vertical. Roof spans in layered formations. for example, are calculated on the assumption that the rock behaves as a gravity loaded beam. This is all too often unrealistic. Roof bolts are also often considered to be simply means of suspending the gravity loaded beams. As Dr. Reed has mentioned they are probably, in fact, acting to restrain a beam which is attempting to buckle due to lateral pressure. The fact that moisture can reduce the strengths of some rocks as much as 50 percent has been known for many years. In the mine me are almost always faced with wet rock, yet no one has investigated ways in which this wakening effect can be overcome. as, for example, by waterproofing the rock. C. Fairhurst, University of Minnesota I would like to mention that we have found,2 from stress-relief determinations, that appreciable (over 1000 lb per sq in.) horizontal pressures occur also at the surface in granites quarried in central Minnesota. Whilst I agree that more field measurements are desirable, it is important to point out that most university research is undertaken by graduate students who must attend classes daily. Their research is therefore restricted to the laboratory. A.M. Starfield, University of Minnesota No one denies the importance of obtaining: data from field measurements. It is equally important, however, that field measurements be guided by theory. Much time and money can be wasted by indiscriminate measurement. An example of the value of theory in interpreting measurements is given in Dr. Obert&apos;s comments on the time dependent strain observed in a salt mine. He anticipated that the stress at the wall of the opening would change with time because salt is viscoelastic rather than elastic. It can be shown from theory that if an excavation in a viscoelastic medium is unsupported, then the stress at the wall does

THE ancient copper-mines of Lake Superior, having been destroyed or covered by-modern mining-dumps, are not accessible to the present inhabitants of that region, and, since no more are likely to be found, some account of those already discovered, from one who has seen them, may be acceptable to the Institute. Early in May, 1855, 1 took a party of men to open an ancient pit on the Quincy mine-location. Mr. C. C. Douglas was the Agent.," as mine-managers were then called on Lake Superior. The Quincy Co. had previously done work on a fissure-vein, several hundred feet west of the Amygdaloid lode (afterwards called the Pewabic lode), on which was the ancient pit herein described. It was at this pit that the Quincy&apos; main shaft was subsequently stink. The ancient pit showed an apparent depth of about 4 ft., but when cleaned out it was shown to be 14 ft. deep, having been filled up by the sliding-in of material composed largely of broken rock, taken out in sinking the ancient shaft, and left near its mouth. Midway of the shaft, and below water-level, was found a scaffolding, of white-birch poles,- which had been used as a landing, to assist in removing the excavated rock. The shaft was 7 ft. in diameter. The excavation had been done by first building fires in order to disintegrate the rock, as was proved by the abundance of charcoal found; then breaking the softened rock with hammers of diorite, such as is found in the greenstone range on Keweenaw point. These hammers had about. the size of large paving-stones. Only broken ones were found, the whole ones having been doubtless carried away for other work, such as could be traced on the lode for a hundred feet or more to the south. DISCUSSION I. M. Symonds, (Cia. Minera de Penoles, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico)—Messrs. Boeke and Gunther have written most interesting papers describing their zinc de-leading operations. Mr. Gunther was kind enough to show me his operation last fall. Aside from the excellent results, I was most impressed by the ease of control. I had expected a difficult operation requiring careful control and supervision, but found one requiring little attention. The only disappointing fact of the separation is the poor copper recovery in the concentrate of the delead-ing float. The final zinc concentrate still has about 3 pct chalcopyrite, assuming the copper is chalcopyrite, and adversely affects the zinc grade. If the copper mineral is free, the poor recovery is probably due to the high cyanide concentration. Fortunately, about 75 pct of the copper is recovered before the pulp goes to the zinc circuit. Mr. Gunther&apos;s remarks about proper cyanide to zinc sulphate ratios cannot be overemphasized. Although our experience has been confined mostly to the conventional lead-zinc separation, we have found these ratios most important, and more important in the mill than in the laboratory. The laboratory appears to give optimum results over a wider range of reagent control than the mill, especially in regard to the effect of cyanide. In handling relatively high grade ores in the mill we usually find that ratios of cyanide to zinc sulphate of 1 to 10 or 20 or higher work best. Where there is a substantial amount of chalcopyrite present it has been noted that cyanide in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 lb per ton of ore is often beneficial in zinc rejection and possibly in copper recovery in the lead concentrate, while larger amounts, say 0.20 to 0.25 lb per ton, will float more zinc and cause a serious rejection of chalcopyrite. On an ore with 15 to 20 pct zinc content we have had to use 0.8 to 1.2 pounds of zinc sulphate per ton of ore with the above cyanide to obtain optimum results. Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. MINING geologists and mining engineer, rarely give due thought to the geography of mining deposits. They realize, it is true that what may be ore in one place would be only worthless rock in another because f the in accessibility of a smelter r a market; and they may consider the lack of a supply of labor, or water, or power to carry on operations. But they do not think (of these things in terms of geography. Geography may be defined as the science of relationships between earth and man, so geographers are vitally interested in the how and why of mining as it is carried on at different place, having entirely different environment-. Such environments are geographic complexes or composites of natural and cultural elements, which are listed and briefly discussed in the following paragraphs.

The Government and Leeco concluded a cost-sharing agreement in 1976 to demonstrate longwall mining of a thin coalbed, 1 m or less, in a mine near Hyden, Ky. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for mine design and equipment specifications. Four- legged shields, a face conveyor, a stage loader and an in-web shearer were selected to operate on a 183 m face. Lengwall mining began in 1979 and initially was slowed by low mining height and equipment problems. A rock mechanics program provides early warning capability and criteria for future mine design. Monitoring of surface effects is included.

No PETROLEUM, in commercial quantities, is found in France except the small production of the Pechelbronn field (Fig. 1) in Alsace, which produced 75,000 tons in 1923; therefore the test of the petroleum prospects of the Limagne is most interesting. Under the superintendence of M. Termier, chief engineer of the French mines, a well near Crouelle (Fig. 2) was drilled in 1921 to a depth of 856.3 m. (2808 ft.); at different depths favorable showings were encountered. The well, however, was abandoned because of drilling difficulties. A second one is now being drilled near the same place.

The literature on the beneficiation of serpentine asbestos ore states that the specific gravity of the rock containing fiber and the fiber itself is the same so that specific gravity cannot be used as a basis for separation. An investigation of particles of asbestos ore ranging in size from 4 mesh to 5 in. revealed that the fiber-bearing particles generally had a lower specific gravity compared to essentially barren particles. The difference in specific gravity was sufficient to make an effective gravity separation of ore particles and reject a low grade tailings product. The results of laboratory tests are described that lead to the running of pilot plant tests with 20-ton ore samples using a heavy media separator. These tests indicated that a large amount of low grade material could be rejected from the raw ore at a coarse size. Although the process used is a wet separation, it can be added to a conventional dry asbestos mill. A gravity preconcentration would allow the mining of lower grade ore, increase the life of the mine, increase the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section, and decrease maintenance costs by removal of low grade tailings early in the flowsheet.

HEAVY-DENSITY separation processes, a commercial application of the sink-float test used in mineralogical laboratories for the separation of mineral particles by their difference in specific gravity, are the biggest development in mineral dressing since flotation, which was at about the same stage of development thirty years ago. The scope of their application has broadened and, though still in the development stage, they are being accepted in a constantly increasing number of commercial installations. This progress in mineral beneficiation is especially satisfying when we realize that our high-grade ore deposits are fast disappearing and a big factor in determining whether a hole in the ground is being sat upon by a liar or an honest citizen is how economically the ore dressers can concentrate comparatively low-grade ores. As early as the middle of the nineteenth century attempts were made to use aqueous salt solutions in a heavy-liquid separation for cleaning coal. But the original and recovery costs of these liquids were high and further, the fact that they were corrosive, unstable, and toxic added to the difficulty in using them.

Three of the world&apos;s largest phosphate deposits are located in the USSR. These have an estimated reserve of 2,600 million short tons of elemental phosphorus. The best known lies in the Khibiny Massif, an alkalaic rock formation some 600 square miles in area with mountain peaks rising to an altitude of 3300 ft above the surrounding terrain. The Khibiny Massif is north of the Arctic Circle in the Kola Peninsula at a latitude of 67° 30&apos; north and a longitude of 35° 30&apos; east. It is connected by rail to Murmansk, 100 miles northwest, and Leningrad, 900 rail miles south.

You have chosen to be mining engineers. The principal importance of your engineering education to date has been in teaching you how to think and how through books to have ready access to the accumulated experience of previous generations, as well as the current experience of the day. You should by now have acquired something of the engineering point of view, the open skeptical mind. the power to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions, form theories and test these by further experiment, and weigh the inherent probability of conclusions drawn by others. I am asking you today to consider certain facts and the conclusions I am drawing from those facts.

It is necessary occasionally to use aluminum-alloy sheet where moderately elevated temperatures are encountered. Considerable attention has been directed toward determining the influence of "artificial aging" on the room-temperature properties of the precipitation-hardenable alloys, as testified by numerous company reports and by references I to 4. Investigations on the properties at elevated temperatures are few, however, and have not always covered the range of times and temperatures of greatest interest. The present investigation was instituted to overcome this deficiency. The work was done for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board, under the supervision of the War Metallurgy Committee, as a part of the "restricted" Project NRC-548. It has been released for publication by the Office of Production Research and Development. AS is well known, the high-strength aluminum alloys achieve their remarkable properties as a result of precipitation-hardening. In production they are subjected to a solution heat-treatment followed by quenching, to retain the supersaturated solid solution. The solution treatment is followed by "aging" (precipitation-hard- ening) either at room temperature or at a suitable elevated temperature. A considerable increase in tensile and compressive yield stresses results from precipitation at room temperature ("natural aging"). Through the elevated-temperature process ("artificial aging") it is possible to obtain values of yield stress considerably higher than those attainable by natural aging. The increase in yield stress is accompanied by a smaller gain in ultimate tensile stress and by a decrease in elongation. During the first stages of artificial aging the yield stress increases steadily until it reaches a maximum value. In this condition the material is said to be "fully aged." Further exposure results in "averaging," attended by a steady decrease in yield stress. In the production of the artificially aged materials, temperatures and times are selected to achieve full aging. The following important characteristics are associated with the process: 1.
