I HAVE taken the liberty of calling the researches herein mentioned industrial, to distinguish them from those strictly scientific, where every known appliance is used to insure accuracy in determining principles. The industrial researches are made to ascertain wherein we have failed to embody, in practice, the principles which have been fully demonstrated by the more purely scientific investigations. So far the researches have been mostly confined to the conditions of combustion as used in locomotive furnaces, although we have examined, to some extent, furnaces under marine and stationary boilers. The products of complete combustion are gases, and, knowing what we should have, it is at once shown by analyzing the products whether the desired reactions are taking place. In spite of imperfect furnaces, lack of system in the arrangement of grate-bars and exhaust nozzles, the results are not altogether vitiated, because the analyses are not closer than one-tenth of one per cent., as under the present conditions it is hardly possible to collect gas exactly under the same conditions at different times. All of our industrial operations have developed in the past few years so rapidly, nearly all of them paying, that, until within the past three years, comparatively little attention has been given to their economy outside of the profession. Great corporations have not asked and considered the question in earnest, can we utilize our heat so as to produce the same effect at less cost? The applications of heat are so extensive, entering into every branch of industry, the principal power used to carry on metallurgical processes, to conduct transportation, that its economical generation becomes of universal importance; in fact, its economical generation and application is the leading industrial question of the day. It is stated by those who have given the subject much attention, that in our best steam-engines not over 10 per cent of the theoretical value of the fuel is utilized, and upon locomotives it is far less, probably not exceeding under the most favorable circumstances 5 or 6 per cent. In recent experiments made with the dynagraph, in drawing trains upon the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway from Cleveland to Erie, 95i miles, we found the force required to draw a stock train of 709 tons to be 2,498,396,320 foot-pounds, exclusive of the force to move the locomotive itself. INTRODUCTION The most important element in a successful lingual mining is a good roof control. The modern longwall mining employs hydraulic powered supports for roof control at the face area. The application of hydrau¬lic powered support requires the knowledge of over¬burden strata behavior for proper selection of sup¬port type and capacity. Failure to do so could lead so serious loss. There are several methods available for determining the required support capacity (1-3). While these methods are simple for application, they do not include the complicated roof behavior observed in longwall mining. As research progresses and operational experience accumulates (4,5), the concept about the designing and selection of powered support improves. The design of a longwall powered support consists of three major phases: 1. structural integrity and stability of the powered support, 2. external loadings induced by the movements of the overburden strata, and 3. interaction between the support, roof and floor. Phase 1 involves structural analysis (5) and full-sized testing (6) of the supports. Its validity is limited by the accuracy of the assumed external loading because of the uncertainty about the actual loading underground. The third phase includes the reaction of the support and the floor to the movements of the overburden strata and vice versa. Among the three phases, the second phase concer¬ning the external loading seems to be the least known because of the complicated behavior of the roof strata. There are many unresolved problems. For example, does the main roof break periodically and cause periodic roof weighting in the face area? If so, are there any rules governing its behavior? How does the roof load on the support canopy! Finally, how can one determine the required support capacity and select a proper type of support to meet a certain roof behavior? In order to answer those questions, underground instrumentation and observations were performed at 4 longwall panels in 3 separate mines for the past two years. This paper summarizes the current findings. PANEL LAYOUTS AND EQUIPMENT EMPLOYED The three mines selected are all located in West Virginia; two in northern and one in southern West Virginia. As shown in Table 1, seam conditions (i.e. seam, depth and thickness) and panel layouts are different among the three mines. The most significant difference in equipment is the face powered supports. Three mines used three different types of shield; 2-leg caliper, 2-leg lemniscate, and 4-leg lemniscate chock-shield. (Fig. 1) UNDERGROUND INSTRUMENTATION AND OBSERVATION PROGRAM Two events were instrumented in each observed longwall face: one was the hydraulic pressure (resistance) of the powered supports and the other was the canopy load distributions. In addition, the gob caving conditions were visually observed and recorded. Leg and Support Resistances One or two automatic Weksler Pressure Recorders were installed at the designated shield support,. In most cases, the daily charts were used to record the pressure variations in both the front or the rear legs (for the 4-leg shield), or in both the leg and the fore-pole ram (for the 2-leg shield). The recorded pressure w a s then converted to load or resistance by multiplying it by the cross-sectional area of the hydraulic leg or canopy ram piston. Fig. 2 shows the typical pressure-recorded charts for the 4-leg and 2-leg shields in a 23-24 hour period. The support resistance is the summation of the resistance in each of all the legs for that support. Generally, the resistance of the fore-pole ram will not be considered in determining the capacity of the support because of its rather small vertical compo¬nent force at the tip of the fore-pole. Canopy Load Distribution External load distribution on the canopy as exer¬ted by the roof was monitored. The measurements employed 12-14 pieces of pressure cells (6-inch square) that were uniformly arranged in two rows on the canopy. After support setting, the pressure changes in the cells were monitored at various stages of the mining (supporting) cycle while the support leg pressures were recorded continuously by the pressure recorders. Based on the calibration chara¬cteristics of each pressure cell as performed in the laboratory before and after each underground test, the cell pressures were converted to actual loadings. From these load measurements the canopy load distri¬butions and the relations between measured canopy loadings and support leg resistances were determined. Accordingly, the supporting efficiency of the shield support can be determined.

P. B. Baxendell is to be complimented for an exccllent piece of work. To our knowledge there has been no previous publication of field data on the flow of oil and gas through the annulus of a well. It is certainly gratifying to see this work on annular flow confirm the previous published correlation procedure on tubing flow. It extends considerably the range under which reliable gas-lift calculations can be made. Baxendell discussed this work with us about a year ago and was kind enough to send a large scale plot of his correlation. We had been designing gas-lift installations on flow through the annulus, assuming that the original correlation of the f factor based on tubing flow' was valid as long as we stayed within the same mass velocity range on which the correlation was based. Doing this work necessitated the use of an equivalent diameter for the annular flow. The equivalent diameter is defined as area' of stream cross section wetted perimeter and for the case of an annulus is D, — D,. Substituting this in the basic equation correlating energy loss along with the area to flow required to convert the velocity, to volumetric flow rate, D (Baxendell's Eq. 7) becomes dell's expression, D,). Similarly, the D in 1.4737 X 10 (M&/D) becomes (D, + D;) for annular flow. On receipt of Baxendell's data, we. of course, recalculated it to put it into the form we were using, and to see how well it agreed with the correlation based on tubing flow. Fig. 1 shows the results, which were certainly gratifying. For low values of (D, - D,) pv, the data coincide with the data on flow through tubing, whereas at high values the data on flow through the annuli appear to be leveling off to a constant value. For very high rates of flow where the turbulence is very high, one might expect the value f to level out and become constant. THE early history and progress of anthracite stripping, from the first known operation at Summit Hill in 1821 through 1917, was covered in 1917 in a paper by J. B. Warriner,1 then chief engineer, now president of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co., and stripping methods between 1917 and 1931 were the subject of a paper in 1931 by H. H. Otto,2 of the Hudson Coal Company. The present paper is confined to methods used today on pitching beds in the western middle and southern anthracite fields. The anthracite industry, not unlike other large industries, had been affected for more than a decade by the adverse economic conditions of the country. High development and operating costs and the competition of other fuels caused some collieries to be closed temporarily, while others were permanently abandoned. In order to obtain a larger tonnage at a lower development cost, a larger stripping program was put into effect by many companies. In 1932, stripping operations accounted for 334 million tons, or 7 per cent of the total anthracite production of the year, and in the next 10 years this increased until more than double that amount, or over 14 per cent of the total production, was from stripping operations. These figures represent the total production of the entire anthracite region; unfortunately, the figures have not been separated from the different fields. There are some operations in the southern and middle western fields where the tonnage obtained from stripping amounts to more than 30 per cent of the total colliery production. Stripping operations on pitching beds present difficult problems. Owing to the various geological formations, a different situation is encountered in nearly every stripping pit; and because of the proximity of an overlying bed, it is very often necessary to load the entire overburden into trucks and haul it out of the pit to the dump area, although back filling and casting is done whenever possible. Beds in the areas described in this paper pitch from 20° to 90° and some are on the invert in, many sharp folds and faults. PLANNING The more successful strippings have had adequate engineering analysis. Some work is being done without much preliminary planning, but many strippings would have failed completely if close supervision by the engineering department had not been maintained. Locations of stripping areas are determined as follows: 1. By constructing cross sections over the areas and drilling sufficient diamond-drill or well drill holes to study the strata and to determine the location, thickness and pitch of the beds.

General THE controlling supply of asbestos for the world is obtained from southern Quebec, 150 miles or less north of the international boundary line between Canada and the United States, and about 75 miles south of the city of Quebec. The principal production is furnished by eight mines, seven of which occur within a distance of 6 miles, but there are also several smaller properties in the vicinity. The industry was begun in a small way some 35 years ago and has advanced more or less regularly ever since. The annual production now exceeds 100,000 tons and its value is about $3,000,000. It represents over 80 per cent. of the world's production. History Asbestos has been known in the eastern townships of Quebec since 1847, when attention was called to it in an official report by Sir William Logan, the first Director of the Geological Survey of Canada, but it was not until 30 years later that it came into commercial importance. The largest deposits, those of Thetford and Black Lake, were found in 1877 during the construction of the Quebec Central Railway. Work was begun upon them almost at once and has been continued ever since. The Danville mine, the next largest producer, was opened in 1879, and the slip-fiber deposits of East Broughton were located shortly afterward. For the first 15 years only the "crude" asbestos was recovered; that is, fiber long enough to be extracted by hand cobbing. Although this is still a valuable part of the production, it is now a relatively small part of the total output.

Nuclei that are formed during the recrystallization of a grain following plastic deformation generally have orientations that differ from the original. This aspect of recrystallization may be described in terms of orientation changes. It was shown previously, in an investigation on recrystallization in silicon ferrite,&apos; that the observed orientation changes were highly improbable on a chance basis, and that some mechanism must be involved. Analysis showed that the data could be satisfactorily classified into the smaller of two subclasses† of the 36 third-order twin transformations. No attempt was made at that time to classify the data within the special class of 12 third-order twin transformations, although results did indicate a greater probability for some of them to occur. A classification of this type would be more valuable, of course, with more data on orientation changes per old deformed grain. The present work fulfills this condition to some degree and also extends the scope of the investigation to include the effects of original orientation and the amount of plastic deformation. The effect of original orientation is of considerable interest because of the known effects of orientation on plastic deformation, particularly with regard to degree of fragmentation and the formation of deformation bands, and because the orientations produced by deformation should influence the orientations obtained through recrystallization. Barrett and Levenson2 reported that single crystals of iron deformed in the range 82 to 97 per cent could be put into three general classes; namely, crystals in class I maintained a reasonably sharp single orientation, those in class 2 transformed into two distinct orientations, and those in class 3 changed into a large number of major and minor orientations. Something similar would be expected for silicon ferrite crystals, and verification of this for a few cases of types class I and class 2 deformation has been reported elsewhere3 for single crystals of silicon ferrite cold-rolled in the range 10 to 20 per cent. As an example of class 2 deformation, it was shown that a crystal of silicon ferrite cold-rolled in a (110) plane in a <100> direction developed two layers, or deformation bands differing in orientation. When this happens it is possible to etch away one band and leave a single structure for use in studying the orientation changes that occur during recrystallization. when preferred crystal orientations are obtained in recrystallization, it is not particularly necessary to evaluate groups of common orientation, as was done previously (ref. I, Table 6); but an

CORRELATION was made between the heat treatment and hardness of three U-Ti alloys ranging in composition from 8.5 to 50 atomic pct Ti. The following important observations were made: 1) A direct quench of y U-Ti solid solution resulted in the formation of a hard martensitic phase in low-titanium alloys. 2) Subsequent tempering initially increased the hardness by the precipitation of a fine dispersion of U2Ti; further precipitation of U2Ti with tempering time eventually resulted in softening. 3) High-hardness levels were obtained also by isothermal transformation of an 8.5 atomic pct Ti alloy at 400º and 500°C. 4) The crystal structure of the phases present at the solution-treating temperature (one region in the phase diagram excepted) and the temperature within a given phase region affected the hardness of both quenched and isothermally transformed alloys. Introduction It has been known since 1887 that the mechanical properties of metals were dependent upon their microstructure. Sorby pointed out in that year that annealed gray iron castings were softer than chilled iron castings by virtue of the graphite which had replaced hard cementite in the microstructure. Over the years, interest has increased in the effect of microstructure on the mechanical properties of metals, and now high-strength levels may be achieved by bringing about the dispersion of a second phase or by other microstructural adjustments. The nature of a second phase in an alloy strongly influences the properties. For example, the size, shape, amount, and distribution of a second phase plays a very important role in the ultimate properties of an alloy. Microstructural control is achieved by heat treatments. Hence, any alloy system of potential use should be understood in terms of its response to heat treatment and the resultant effects upon the properties.

Under a cooperative agreement between United States Bureau of Mines and the Truax-Traer Coal Company, some operating-scale experiments have been made with the cyclone thickener in the preparation plant of the Shamrock No. 1 mine at Kayford, West Virginia. These tests were made with a 14-in. cyclone of the type developed by the Dutch State Mines in Limburg. It was applied experimentally to the thickening of solids in washery water to obtain performance data to show the range of sizes that may be recovered and other operating characteristics that would indicate the field of usefulness of this device in coal preparation practice. This is a progress report only. It covers results obtained in a series of 17 tests of the operation of what has been considered a unit of commercial size operating on suspensions of fine coal mixed with a relatively small amount of freeimpurities. The underflow material, after further dewatering in centrifuges, is a marketable grade of coal.

Two papers have been written previously concerning operations at the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The first one,1 written in 1932, described silver-refinery operations at the time for producing silver and gold bullion from tankhouse anode slimes; the second,2 published in 1933, consisted of a description of the entire plant. Since publication of these papers the refinery has become the world&apos;s largest producer of refined selenium. The first selenium was produced in August 1934. Tellurium production on a commercial scale followed in October 1935. This paper will deal with selenium and tellurium production and also with present operations in the silver refinery. Blister cakes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Flin Flon, Manitoba, and commercial anodes from Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, are refined at Montreal East. Both these bullions have unusually high gold, selenium and tellurium content. The average assay of raw slimes produced from domestic and Noranda anodes is about 40 per cent Cu, 3600 oz. per ton Ag, 800 oz. per ton Au, 22 per cent Se and 3.7 per cent Te. EARLY SILVER-REFINERY OPERATIONS From the start of operations in 1931 until July 1934, the raw slimes were oxidize-roasted at 700° F. in a Nichols-Herreshoff furnace, acid¬leached with tankhouse discarded foul electrolyte (20 per cent H2SO4), filtered and charged directly to the doré furnace for refining to doré metal. This is the customary method for treating tankhouse anode slimes but was not suitable at the Montreal East plant because of the high selenium and tellurium content of our slimes. In the acid-leaching process about 50 per cent of the selenium and tellurium in the roasted slimes was dissolved in the electrolyte. 1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Washoe smelter,. Anaconda, Mont., the blister-copper from the converters is transferred, by means of a crane, to a refining-furnace,, in which it is brought to proper pitch by means of air and poles. From this furnace the refined copper, containing gold and silver, is poured into cast-iron molds placed on a platform-conveyor, giving an anode 36.75 in. long, 28 in. wide, and 21 in. thick. By reason of a disagreement between the smelter and the refinery, in reference to the silver-content of the anodes, it became necessary to investigate the methods of sampling used. II. SMELTER METHOD OF SAMPLING. At the smelter the sampling is done by " spotting " into water a small portion of the molten stream of copper as it flows from the furnace, by batting" the stream with a wooden paddle. The first sample is taken 30, min. after the pouring is started, three. other samples being taken at 1-hr. intervals, each sample weighing from 4 to 6 oz. The samples are dried, examined for particle&apos;s of burnt wood, screened on a 10-mesh screen of No. 8 wire to remove the fines, the oversize then screened on a 4-mesh screen of No. 20 wire to remove the coarse, the undersize of this screen being taken as the sample. Teh four portions thus obtained are thoroughly mixed and spli in half by passing over a 16-slot splitting-device, slots being 0.5 in. wide. One-half of the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis and one-half kept as a duplicate. III. REFINERY METHOD OF SAMPLING. Nothing is more important to life-plant and animal-than phosphate. Its compounds are essential to the energy functions of all living systems and for the formation of bones and teeth. Animals get their phosphate from eating plants and other animals, or domestically from feed supplements. Plants get their phosphates from the soil. Man&apos;s most important use of phosphate is for fertilizer; approximately 95% of the world&apos;s phosphate rock production is consumed by fertilizers. Most of the balance is processed in electric furnaces into elemental phosphorus, the important raw material for making industrial phosphates. Recovery of uranium from phosphates has been possible but not widely used. However, recent significant developments have generated interest in such recovery in the US and elsewhere. Phosphate occurs in all igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in all fresh and salt water. However, economical recovery is limited to deposits where natural concentration of the phosphate mineral has occurred. Occasionally natural concentration is great enough that the material can be used as mined; generally, however, the ore is low grade_ and must be concentrated. Phosphate rock is produced in 31 countries. Fig. 1 shows the location of major phosphate rock producers as well as some of the known phosphate deposits not yet in production. In the last decade the world phosphate industry has experienced steady growth. World production rose from 98 Mt of phosphate rock in 1973 to 140 Mt in 1982. Fig. 2 shows the growth curve of rock production and graphically illustrates the almost straight-line rise since 1945 in both US and world production. Table 1 gives the breakdown, by countries, of world rock production, 1974 through 1979. Table 2 shows US rock production by producing areas. Definitions of Terms Used in the Phosphate Industry Phosphate Rock: Commonly called rock in sedimentary deposits and apatite in igneous deposits. Those expressions generally include any mined, or mined and beneficiated, fluorine-containing calcium phosphate used as the raw material for the next stage of manufacturing. The average phosphate content in rocks is 0.1 to 0.2% P2O5, as documented by McKelvey (1973). About 200 minerals contain more than 1 % P2O5. However, the important mineral in igneous rocks is fluorapatite, [Ca5 (PO4),3 F], containing about 42% P205 and 3.8% F2; in sedimentary rocks the important mineral is francolite, a carbonate fluorapatite containing up to 2% molecular CO2. Both are in the apatite family of minerals. Most phosphate rock, whether beneficiated or not, is a fine-grained material. The expression phosphate rock has no relation to its phosphate content. For example, phosphate rock from Idaho used in the production of phosphorus may contain about 24% P205, whereas rock from Morocco may contain 36.6% P2O5. Phosphorite: A deposit of phosphate directly or indirectly of sedimentary origin, which is of economic interest. Grade of Phosphate Rock: The calcium phosphate content of phosphate rock is expressed in different world areas by one of the following terms: BPL (bone phosphate of lime) TPL (triphosphate of lime) P2O5 (phosphorus pentoxide) P (phosphorus-not commonly used) An illustration of relationship is: 80% BPL = 80% TPL = 36.6% P5O2 = 16% P

IT will be recalled that the first professor of metallurgy in the United States, appointed in 1855, never really gave any instruction in metallurgy and gradually turned into a professor of mineralogy. Metallurgy was included with. mining in the early curricula, two students who took the B.S. in mining engineering from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1862 wrote their graduation theses on the metallurgy of copper and zinc, respectively. Even after Columbia School of Mines established, in 1868, a separate curriculum leading to the Ph.B. degree in metallurgy, very few students elected it,* preferring to take the mining degree, since they received in its curriculum nearly all the metallurgical instruction they would have in the metallurgical curriculum. For many years a large proportion of the men who attained prominence in metallurgical enterprises had taken mining rather than metallurgical degrees. METALLURGY Clifton Sorby&apos;s study of thin sections of rocks under the micro¬scope, beginning in 1850, and its subsequent development by Zirkel and others, had made microscopic petrography a recog¬nized department of geological research as early as 1873. . It was inevitable that the idea of studying polished metal surfaces-¬under the microscope by reflected instead of transmitted light would occur to investigators. The Sanford Lake district encompasses an area covering 24 square miles in the central Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State. Discovery of the titaniferous magnetite deposits dates back to 1826. Several attempts to exploit the ores for iron prior to 1942 proved uneconomical because of difficulties with the associated titanium, lack of transportation facilities, and the isolated location. Since 1942, the National Lead Company has produced ilmenite concentrates for the titanium pigment industry, and a magnetite by-product used in the steel and refractory industries. Rocks of the area are Precambrian in age and of igneous origin. The area has a history of erosion, deformation, and metamorphism, subsidence, and finally uplift and glaciation. The resulting topography is extremely rough with drainage patterns controlled by a combination of fault patterns and glacial modifications. The district is within the large anorthosite massif making up the central high peak area of the Adirondacks. All of the various lowsilica rock types associated with the massif are found within the boundaries of the district. These consist of both the Marcy and Whiteface types of anorthosite and of gabbroic anorthosite, gabbro, and different grades of titaniferous magnetite ores. All of the rocks contain the same minerals and differ only in their percentages of these consitituents. Gabbro, and ore associated with it, demonstrate flow structure as both have foliation and lineation. Anorthosite and its associated ores are massive and show very little primary structure. Minor pegmatites and diabase dikes provide evidence of remobilization in selected areas and of late intrusion as well. Faulting is prevalent and follows a regional pattern of major faults trending northeastsouthwest and of minor faults at nearly right angles to them. There are four mineralized areas where an economic grade of ore has been found. Three of these have both gabbroic-type ore and anorthositic-type ore. The fourth has only gabbroic ore. Ores are graded according to their TiO, content, and these range from 9.5 per cent to over 30.0 per cent TiO,. Ore bodies of both types are related to gabbro and conform to the configuration of the gabbro bodies within the anorthosite. At least three distinct theories of ore genesis have been expounded by different investigators. Others propose some variations of one or more of these. Although complete agreement probably never will be reached, it is certain that no one process of ore emplacement can explain the complicated picture as seen today. Further understanding of the ores and their origin will require detailed mapping, sampling, and mineralogical studies of the entire district, and then it may never be understood without qualification.

DURING an investigation of the yttrium-hydrogen system aimed at producing solid yttrium hydride specimens containing various amounts of hydrogen, it was observed that yttrium containing approximately 2 wt pct H exhibited a tendency to crack and crumble to a powder on standing in air at room temperature. It was also observed that longer hydriding times, at a given temperature, increased this susceptibility to powdering without an increase in hydrogen content, also that moisture in the air is necessary for the observed effects to occur. Even if cracking did not occur, there was a continual formation of a light gray powder on the as-treated surface of the hydrided yttrium and this reaction continues until the entire hydrided piece has been reduced to a powder. Storing the hydrided specimens in the absence of air or removing the surface either by machining or grinding were effective means of preventing this disintegration of hydrided yttrium. In an attempt to determine the reason for this powdering phenomenon, the surfaces of a number of as-hydrided yttrium specimens were examined by X-ray techniques. In all cases the X-ray pattern obtained showed the major phase to be yttrium hydride (YH2) as would be expected since the specimens contained 2 to 2.2 wt pct H. In some cases a trace of yttrium oxide was observed. There was also a third phase present on the surface of these hydrided specimens which could not immediately be identified. This unknown phase was a face-centered cubic material, NaC1-type structure, with a lattice parameter of 4.855 and a calculated density of 5.914 g per cc. Very slight hand polishing of the surface of the hydrided yttrium specimens completely removed both the unknown phase and the traces of oxide so that only the yttrium hydride pattern remained. Based on the X-ray patterns the quantity of the unknown phase on the surface of the hydrided yttrium appeared to be directly related to the susceptibility of the material to powdering. Work at the Denver Research Institute on the yttrium-nitrogen binary system showed that yttrium nitride (YN) is a face-centered cubic material with a lattice parameter of 4.878A and a density of 5.890 g per cc. They also noted that this compound rapidly disintegrated to a powder on standing in air. The unknown pattern observed in the above specimens corresponds very closely to that of the nitride—fcc structure, 4.885 parameter, and density of 5.914 g per cc. The presence of this thin film of nitride on the surface of the hydrided specimens probably accounts for the observed powder formation and crumbling. The nitride reacts with the water vapor in the air (verified by private communication from Dr. C. Huffine, General Electric Co.) to yield yttrium oxide and ammonia. Ammonia is readily detected when hydrided yttrium specimens were allowed to stand in bottled moist air. The powder formed on the surface of the hydrided specimens was shown by X-ray analysis to be yttrium oxide. This reaction appears to occur primarily at the grain boundaries since discrete particles of yttrium hydride separate from the specimens during this powdering process. The reaction of yttrium nitride with water vapor is believed to be as follows: 2YN + 3H2O - Y203 + 2NH3. Despite the fact that this nitride is present only as an extremely thin surface film, if the above reaction is not prevented by removing this film from the surface either by machining or grinding, the reaction continues until the entire hydrided piece has been reduced to a powder. To account for this continuation of the reaction, it is believed that the following reactionalsooccurs: 2YH2 + 2NH3 -2YN + 5H2. The nitride produced by the latter reaction reacts in turn with water vapor. The reaction therefore becomes autocatalytic and continues until the hydride has been consumed and the entire piece reduced to oxide powder. The amount of nitride required to initiate this reaction is quite small and this nitrogen contamination can occur from a number of sources—hydrogen gas employed, minute leak in the hydriding apparatus or even from degassing of the reaction vessel itself. Longer hydriding times increase the possibility of nitrogen contamination and this is especially true when a dynamic gas system is employed in the hydriding process. The production of stable, solid hydrided yttrium is dependent on the complete absence of nitrogen contamination during processing. If such contamination does occur, powdering of the hydrided product can be prevented by removing the nitride from the surface e.g. grinding or by preventing access of air to the pieces e.g. sealing in wax or plastic. In recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, differences in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Theoretical analysis of flotation kinetics was initiated by Schuhmann, who sought to define flotation rate of a given mineral and specified size range in terms of certain physical variables of the flotation system. Most of the acid volcanic glasses such as obsidian, perlite, pitchstone, pumice, and pumicite (volcanic ash) are susceptible to some expansion if suddenly subjected to a suitably high temperature in a properly designed furnace, and subsequently suddenly cooled. Expansion results from the action of chemically combined or dissolved water expanding as a vapor within the softened heated rock particles. This expansion forms countless minute bubbles within the pasty mass of the natural glass particles. If the particles are cooled before these bubbles can escape, the resulting products are cellular, more or less spherulitized glass froths or hollow glass spheres of many types. Chemically, they are essentially aluminum silicates containing about 70 to 75 pct silica, 10 to 16 pct alumina, and 2 to 7 pct sodium plus potassium oxides. They are relatively resistant to attack by acids or alkalies, are resistant to heat up to over 1000°F, and are completely inert to insect or fungus attack.
