THE important literature concerning zirconium in magnesium-base alloys is predominantly contained in patent references. Sauerwald, Eisenreich, and Holub1-4 discovered the profound grain-refining influence of small amounts of zirconium on cast magnesium and the attendant increases in strength, and ductility. They extended their work to reveal that limited amounts of certain other elements, including zinc, could be added for further improvement in strength and hardness. British. Patent 5111376 relates to the parent discoveries of Sauerwald, Eisen¬reich, and Holub. All of these references deal primarily with casting characteristics and properties in the cast state. Minor mention is made of desirable tensile strength, ductility, and toughness of wrought Mg-Zr alloys* modified by one or more additional elements. No extensive reference in the literature" has been found to the particular characteristics of wrought Mg-Zn-Zr alloys, with which the present paper is concerned. - The work to be discussed represents essentially an extrusion study of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloys and indicates that this system is highly interesting in the wrought state both academically and commercially. Accordingly, an important aim of this paper is to describe the hot-workability, tension and compression properties, metal¬lography, and toughness of these alloys. Compositional variations are limited to the ranges o to 7 per cent Zn and o to I per cent Zr. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloying and Casting Alloying ingredients were cell mag¬nesium, commercial zinc (intermediate grade), and a chloride salt containing approximately 50 per cent ZrCl2 and 50 per cent alkali chlorides. This salt is produced by Titanium Alloy Manu¬facturing Company. Melting, alloying, and pouring procedure essentially followed the crucible process as described by Nelson.6 The magnesium was melted using Dow No. 310 flux, and the temperature raised to 1350° to 1400°F for the alloying operations. After alloying of the zinc, the zirconium containing salt was added in small portions with vigorous stirring. This is an adaptation of the method described in British Patent 533264.7 The alloying efficiency of zir¬conium was approximately 30 per cent. During the alloying of zirconium, fluorspar was added in amount required as a flux¬inspissating agent. Next the melt was refined with Dow No. 310 flux and held quietly for 15 min. A slight decrease in drilling activity occurred in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania during 1945 and a considerable decrease in the shallow-gas territory (Upper Devonian or higher). The number of deep tests (Middle Devonian or deeper) completed was two less than in 1944 and these did not open any new reserves of natural gas. Thus far, no commercial oil has been encountered in sands below the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania. Oil production declined 8 per cent.

INTRODUCTION The Bullmoose Coal Project is part of a major development in northeastern British Columbia which comprises a new rail line, a new townsite, powerline, highway, the upgrading of the Canadian National Railway's main line, a new coal port at Prince Rupert and two new coal mines, the Bullmoose mine and the Quintette mine. The total investment by all parties is estimated to be in excess of $2.6 billion and made up approximately as follows : [Table No. 1 $ Millions - Quintette Coal Limited 950 Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc. 275 Canadian National Railway Company 800 6 British Columbia Railway Company Port at Prince Rupert 280 Townsite, Roads 6- Power ] The new infrastructure is intended to serve not only the Bullmoose and Quintette coal projects but also eventually a number of other coal properties in northeastern British Columbia. The Bullmoose project is structured on a joint venture basis as follows : [Table No. 2 Teck Corporation 51% Lornex Mining Corporation Ltd. 39% Nissho Iwai Coal Development 1 0% (Canada) Ltd. -- 100% ] The mine has a capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of clean coal per year. In the initial years 1.7 million tonnes will be metallurgical coal and 0.6 million tonnes thermal coal. After the first three years of operations the annual production of metallurgical coal will increase to an average of approximately 2.1 million tonnes and the production of thermal coal will decrease to an average of approximately 0.2 million tonnes. At this level of 2.3 million tonnes annual production, the Bullmoose mine has sufficient reserves for at least 26 years of production. History Brameda Resources Ltd. commenced coal exploration in the Bullmoose-Sukunka area in 1969. Teck obtained an option on the Bullmoose coal licences in 1970 and started surface exploration and diamond drilling in 1971. Teck earned a 50% interest in the property, and thereafter expenses were jointly financed by Teck and Brameda. In 1981 Brameda merged with Teck making Teck the sole owner. The initial phase of the exploration program, which was completed in 1975, included 7,200 meters of diamond drilling in 35 holes. During 1976 and 1977, detailed exploration and test work were carried out on the South Fork and West Fork areas where multiple seams close to surfaces indicated the potential for large tonnages of strippable coal. In those two years, work included road construction, detailed mapping and trenching to outline the coal seam traces at the surface, 6,300 meters of diamond drilling in 80 holes, and 300 meters of underground bulk sampling from seven adits. Washability tests and analysis work were carried out on the drill cores and adit samples, and pilot plant washability studies were undertaken. In 1978 and 1979 Teck engineers prepared open pit mining plans and production schedules and Kaiser Engineering was retained to prepare a layout of the plant preparation facility. A feasibility study prepared by Teck's engineering group in January 1982 was the base document used by the Lenders in assessing the technical and economic viability of the project. Property Location The property lies some 650 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, and 87 kilometers south by road from the village of Chetwynd. The Sukunka property (British Petroleum) adjoins to the north, the Mount Spieker property (Ranger Oil Option) adjoins to the east, and the Quintette property is located to the southeast.

THE petroleum production of the world for 1924 again passed the billion-barrel mark, as it did in 1923. A preliminary estimate of production is 1,016,000,000 bbl., a decrease of 1,100,000 bbl., or less than 1 per cent. from the 1,017,100,000 bbl. produced in 1923, the year of greatest production. FIG. 1.-TOTAL WORLD AND UNITED STATES PRODUCTION. Production in the United States decreased 18,500,000 bbl., the. first decrease in yearly production since 1906. Mexican production decreased almost 10,000,000 bbl. Russia, Persia, Roumania, Venezuela, and Peru increased their production by an amount almost great enough to offset the decline in the United States and Mexico. The decline in the production in the United States and Mexico was considerably less than anticipated by leading geologists, economists, and statisticians; nor did the increase in consumption entirely meet the expectations of estimators. Early in the year, the statistical department of one of the most important oil companies forecast a draft on stocks, from an excess of demand over supply, of about 80,000,000 bbl. Instead of decreasing our stocks, they were increased by about 33,000,000 barrels.

G. W. Geil (National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C.)—The authors state that the degree of accuracy realized in the experimental determination of a, is likely rather low. This inaccuracy is attributed to the difficulty in reading the load of the tension machine at the instant of fracture of the test bars. I believe there is another factor which may have added considerably to the inaccuracy in the determination of a,, namely, the determination of 8,. Fracture of a cylindrical tensile specimen of a ductile metal tested in tension at room temperature is generally initiated at the axis and rapidly propagates radially to the periphery of the necked section. During the propagation of the fracture, the metal at the rim of the minimum cross-section extends longitudinally and contracts radially. Thus values of 81, based on diameter measurements made after complete fracture of the specimens do not necessarily represent the strain at the initial fracture." Data obtained at the National Bureau of Standards with a 0.3 pct C steel in the condition as-quenched from 1575°F and tempered at 1000°F for 1 hr and tested in tension at room temperature indicated a considerable "rim effect" and as shown in Fig. 13, resulted in an apparent increase in Sf from 0.90 to 0.98. As the fracture strain of this steel is approximately equal to those of the steels reported by the authors, it seems probable that a similar "rim effect" may have added to the inaccuracies in the reported values of Si and accompanying values of El. R. Raring (authors' reply)—The authors are grateful to Mr. Geil for having called attention to a possible source of uncertainty in the determination of fracture stress, and they are in agreement with the principles upon which his discussion is based.

THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for ,this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1893, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 30 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1893 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of greensand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8% ), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of, slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace-element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Studies were made on the system iron plus alumina. Various methods of dispersing and various amounts of alumina were used. Powder metallurgy techniques were used to produce the final product. Microstructures and some mechanical properties are presented. Alloys containing up to 16 pct alumina by weight are ductile at all temperatures tested. The ivon-alumina materials have a higher yield stress and improved creep resistance over that of pure iron. SINCE the development of SAP' an A1- Al2O3 powder metallurgy product, great interest has been shown in the development of a SAP-like structure in metals and alloys other than aluminum. The outstanding properties of this class of materials are: 1) Good creep resistance at high temperature. 2) High yield strengths and high hardness at high temperatures. 3) High recrystallization temperature. However, the lack of ductility and formability has thus far limited the applications of SAP-like materials. The following report deals with methods of dispersing A12O3 in Fe, processing of powders into rod, structures produced after processing, and mechanical properties of the iron-alumina material produced. Methods of dispersing the alumina and also the volume fraction of alumina added were varied. MATERIAL Powder Processing— Four methods of obtaining dispersions of alumina in iron were studied. 1) Oxidation-reduction of a Fe + 8 pct Al alloy. .2) Coprecipitation of Fe(OH)3 + Al(OH)3 from aqueous solution. 3) Colloidal mixing of Fe,O3 and Al2O3. 4) Colloidal mixing of Fe powder and A1,O3. Fig. 1 is a processing flowsheet which outlines the processing steps taken to produce a final extruded bar 1/4 in. in diameter and about 30 in. long. The - 100 mesh iron-aluminum alloy was oxidized by placing a thin layer of powder on an alumina plaque. The reduction step was modified to include 1/2 hr at 1000°C since the powders tended to become pyro-phoric unless sintered slightly after low-temperature reduction. Compacting was done in a 1-1/8-in.-diam pressing die. The slugs produced averaged 1 in. in length. The billets were encased in low-carbon steel cans shown schematically in Fig. 2. The blank is included for structure and property comparison purposes. TESTING PROCEDURE All tests were made on as-extruded material.

THE solid solubility of cementite in a-iron has been investigated a number of times and there is now general agreement on the solubility of about 0.018 wt pct at the eutectoid temperature, 720°C. With decreasing temperature, the solubility falls off so rapidly and to such a low value that no data obtained by standard metallurgical methods are available below 500°C. Using a new technique, however, Dijkstral has obtained apparently accurate solubilities down to 400°C; which data agree well with previously measured solubilities in the 600" to 700°C temperature range.' The present paper has in part the purpose of extending his work to still lower temperatures. Earlier work of Low and Gensamer3 on iron has established that the presence of a relatively small amount of carbon can play a tremendous role in affecting the mechanical properties. In particular they found that the yield point remained high as they reduced the amount of carbon in the iron; the yield point dropped only after the carbon content had fallen to something less than 0.003 wt pct, the point where their carbon analysis failed. It seemed desirable to the present author to see if some means could not be found to extend this part of their work. This investigation has then the additional purpose to determine the range of carbon concentration in which the major change occurs. Solubility The method used in the present work to measure small percentages of carbon in a-iron utilizes internal friction. Since this method may not be fa-miliar to the reader, the following explanation will be given (a part of this procedure is from unpublished results of Dijkstra): It is known that the internal friction associated with the diffusion of

(communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Firmstone's paper is of great interest; but he has unfortunately otnitted to state the most important point, viz., the percentage of sulphur in the two materials he compares; and this omission vitiates the conclusions which he draws. Comparing by grade, instead of silicon-contents (as in his Table III.), the iron made using limestone with that made using dolomite, we find for gray-forge the average of four analyses under limestone to be, Si, 0.644; S, 0.089 ; while one analysis under dolomite gives Si, 0.508 ; S, 0.070. For No. 2 iron, the limestone flux gives, as an average of 19 analyses, Si, 1.107; S, 0.051; while the average of 4 analyses made with dolomite flux gives Si, 0.630; S, 0.056. It will be observed, that no No. 1 pig is given under limestone, while 14 analyses appear under dolomite, averaging Si, 0.950 ; S, 0.028. As nothing is said about changed conditions, it is Fair to presume that the ore and fuel, as well as the blast-temperature (which is stated to have been uniform at about 750' F.) remained practically the same; and since the sulphur in the two fluxes is not given, it is impossible to know whether the lower sulphur for equal silicon-contents is due to the use of dolomite or to other conditions. The use of dolomite would produce a more fusible cinder, and the furnace would be hotter than when using limestone; therefore, we might expect to see a grayer iron. The amount of So. 1 iron made with dolomite seems to confirm this supposition; and, under these conditions, we might expect more of the sulphur to be volatilized, and to pass off in the gases. The easier fusibility of the cinder would also permit more rapid driving; and this should reduce the amount of silicon and sulphur in the iron, as the amount of reduced metalloids in the pig is directly proportional to the length of time it remains in the reducing-zone.

INTRODUCTION Approximately two years have elapsed since the first summary of the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project was presented (1). Since that time, various physical modifications and additions to the existing treatment system have transpired. Further, Homestake and the entire mining industry have been impacted severely by additional modifications and additions concerning regulatory reform aimed at total disciplinary permitting and hazardous waste management. The following paper summarizes the past accomplishments relating to the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project, correlating these accomplishments with future plans that are being developed to comply with regulations and to continue Homestake's commitment to environmental protection. The famous Homestake Gold Mine, located in Lead, South Dakota, has been operating in the Black Hills region for over a century, approximately 12 years before the south half of Dakota Territory was admitted to the Union as the State of South Dakota (2). During the 104 years of operational development, Homestake's Gold Mine, as well as the entire mining industry, have been influenced by numerous governmental regulations dating back to the Refuse Act of 1899 which regulated the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. The enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 may be thought of as the beginning of a long line of unplanned steps to deal with the many concerns of matters pertaining to the environment. Environmental awareness continued into the 1970’s, in which the Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), to name a few, surfaced.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior of oil securities during the six-year period January 1932 through December 1937. This period was selected because of its varied character. It includes the depths of the depression, the broad and spasmodic recovery, and the recession collapse. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the correlation of a number of economic factors with an index of 13 oil stocks. The second part is a comparison of the different,ial behavior of 6 oil stocks. The relationships developed here are only a few of many that might be considered in a complete analysis. The stock market is regarded as a barometer of business confidence and as such exerts an important influence upon corporate policies, particularly upon industrial expansion. The complex and continuously changing nature of its price structure, the ebb and flow of influences and the effects of impacts require dynamic rather than static analysis. When treated in this way, many of the important fluctuations in market prices and changes in the relationships between securities appear quite logical. The market for oil securities has varied widely in recent years. The Standard Statistics index of 13 oil stocks made a bull market peak of 166.7 in September 1929. The collapse of the boom and the ensuing bear market finally carried the index down to a low of 36.4 in June 1932. From this point oil stocks made an irregular recovery; they reached a top at 139.7 in March 1937, and after maintaining this approximate level through August, declined precipitously to 93.3 in December 1937. The prices of these 13 oil stocks have gone up and down under the influence of numberless variables. These variables are of two kinds, those external to the industry, and those that are solely due to its internal condition. The external factors are political, social, and economic, both domestic and foreign. These are the influences that induce the ebb and flow of all prices in general and security prices in particular. Among the internal factors are the regulation of industry, the development of new reserves and processes, and the disequilibrium due to lack of balance between supply and demand. Some of the simpler relationships are examined in this paper.

At the February, 1916, meeting of the Institute, a paper presented by Hayward and Raymond gave the results of a study on the effect of time in tempering medium-carbon steel, when the following conclusions were reached: It is not fair to consider the question settled when only three specimens were used for each treatment, but the results obtained indicate that for reheating quenched medium-carbon steel to temperatures below 500" it is only necessary to heat it through. Longer heating has little or no effect on the tensile strength, ductility, or hardness. At temperatures above 500°, increasing the time of treatment causes a slight falling off in hardness and tensile strength with a corresponding increase in ductility. In the discussion of the paper these conclusions were attacked and evidence was presented that seemed to throw doubt on their accuracy. The authors, however, showed that this evidence was based on high-carbon or alloy steels and no facts regarding medium-carbon steel were presented. During this study the heat treatment was carried out in a small electric resistance furnace. It held nine specimens, but when these were placed in the furnace the temperature was lowered to such an extent that 30 to 40 min. were required to reach the desired heat. The authors pointed to this as a weak point in the investigation and it seemed wise to supplement the research by work on similar steel but using a different method of heating. This has been done and the results are given in the present paper. The Rhode Island Tool Co. coöperated by furnishing the steel and turning the tensile specimens. ALTHOUGH confident of its ability to meet any demands which may be made, the petroleum refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full co-operative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation?s needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned.

T HE theory of hardening by heat treatment was, as usual, the most actively discussed phase of metal working theory and in spite of the fact that it is now ten years since the dispersion theory was proposed by Messrs. Merica, Waltenberg, and Scott, it still retains a dominating influence. It is being increasingly recognized. however, that in its simplest form, that is, the purely mechanical effect of very fine crystallites distributed through a groundmass, it is distinctly in- adequate. To explain the observed facts we are obliged to assume some well-defined intermediate stage between supercooled solid solution and conglomerate, however fine be the particles of the latter. This intermediate has been inferred by Gaylor and Preston to be "the rejection of the atoms of the dissolved metal from the lattice of the solid solution accompanied by the possible formation of molecules."' Perhaps this may well be designated as the formation of supersaturated solid solution. Some very definite evidence of such an inter- mediate stage has been found in the hardening of steel where it appears that the very hard martensite may be considered as a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron. The X-ray spectrometry of drastically quenched steel shows a tetragonal lattice whose parameter changes by tempering at 100" until it coincides with the cubic lattice of iron.? The same gradual change of the tetragonal to the cubic lattice has been observed by Sekito when esamining layers on increasing depth below the surface of a quenched carbon steel.

THE following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests-which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers-has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same. thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question, and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. As a result of the tests made by Jenkins, 1 the efficiency was raised from 56.2 to 71.2 per cent. This shows the large saving that may frequently be made in the fuel-consumption by studying the results of a careful test.. The log of the test, given in Fig. 1, shows that, just as soon as the temperature became regular, the percentage of CO, decreased and that of CO increased.

FOLLOWING the discovery of a body of ore that appears to have commercial possibilities there is a period of development work to determine its extent and grade and the most economical method of mining it. Laboratory tests are made in an effort to determine the most practicable and economical treatment for the extraction of the valuable constituents of the ore and these tests are carried farther and checked in a pilot or test mill. The rate at which the ore is to be mined and the daily capacity of the plants that are to treat it will depend on a number of important factors such as: The size of the orebody; the capital available for building the plants; the market or demand for the final product; the supply of skilled and common labor available for the construction, operation and maintenance of the plants; the quantity and quality of available water, and the amount and cost of power that can be purchased or that can be economically developed. Having decided on the treatment that is to be given to the ore and after full consideration of the above factors the management decides to erect a reduction plant of a given capacity.
