SOME time ago the Detroit Copper Mining Co. had to decide the question whether it would pay to re-treat slime-tailings, and several machines were tested in order to ascertain the type of construction which would give the greatest saving. In previous tests on the ore of this company, several tables proved far inferior to the Frue vanner, and for this reason they did not receive any serious consideration. In the late tests, however, one table was found to surpass the vanner in the percentage of saving made. The Frue vanner used in these tests had been adjusted approximately to the slope which the slime-vanuers in the concentrator of the Detroit Copper Co. had at that time, about 2 in. between the inside of the wooden posts, or 0.272 in. per ft. It had not been determined, however, if this slope was the most economical one for treating the slime-feed in the mill, or for re-treating the tailings from the slime-vanners, and I was instructed to ascertain by test-runs, under different conditions, the best adjustments for the work to. be done. In order to determine if a change in the adjustments of the machines would improve the results, it seemed sufficient to continue running the tests between the vanner and the table before mentioned, keeping the feed and all other conditions the same, but. varying the adjustments of the vanner .from run to run. I employed a vanner-man of long experience to operate these machines, who expressed the opinion that a slope between 2 3/8 and 2.5 in. between the posts (0.323 and 0.340 in. per ft.) would give the best results. Some runs made this way gave a considerable improvement. While for a slope of 2 in. (0.272 in. per ft.) the saving had been only 40.5 per cent. of that of the table, it .was 49.2 per cent. for 2.5 in. (0.340 in. per ft.) slope. A decrease of

THE greatly enlarged demand for small sizes of seamless copper tube which has recently occurred, due particularly to the rapid growth of the electric household-refrigerator industry, has emphasized the superiority of phosphorized to tough pitch copper for the purpose of producing this commodity. In the manufacture of this material exceedingly heavy reductions by cold drawing are employed, customary practice involving as much as 90 per cent. reduction of cross-sectional area in four runs without intermediate annealing. Although this superiority has long been recognized by tube makers, no quantitative expression of it has heretofore been published. It is believed that the data herewith presented mill serve this purpose. Recent investigators are not in agreement as to the relative mechanical properties of copper containing small amounts of oxygen as compared with copper containing sufficient oxygen to produce that condition known as tough pitch. Hanson, Marryat and Ford1 found that "oxygen has a relatively small effect on the properties of copper." Johnson, on the contrary, states "it cannot be denied that it (tough pitch copper) is inferior to deoxidized copper . . . where severe mechanical manipulation is concerned." These authorities in the reports of their investigations, as might be expected from their conclusions, do not present data of a character requisite to a conclusive determination of the question.

In preparing a paper on coal washing in Colorado and New Mexico, it is difficult to refrain from entering into a discussion of the historical aspects of this subject, for the story of coal washing in these states goes back well into the last century. This phase of the subject could well make a complete paper in itself, and of necessity this present discussion must be limited to current operations. Therefore, we are taking into consideration only those washing plants which have operated for some period during the years of 1947 and 1948.

Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. As pyrrhotite is magnetic, this information was obtained by making magnetic sorting tests on samples of the mill tailing and screening the material thus segregated. IT has been reported that both berylliumL and zirconium&apos; developed the same basic textures during rolling at temperatures up to 1475 °F as at room temperature, differing only by an increase in the spread of basal planes toward the transverse direction as the temperature of deformation was increased. Iodide titanium&apos;&apos; rolled at 1050°F has a texture similar to the cold-rolled texture, {000l}, 25° to 30" from the rolling plane toward the transverse direction, <1010>, Rolling iodide titanium at 1450°F produced a more random condition with the basal planes parallel to the rolling plane and no direction strongly aligned with the rolling direction.

DECISION to build a mill at the Bayard property was made in May 1942. Western-Knapp Engineering Co., of San Francisco, assisted by engineers of U. S. Smelting, handled the design and construction. Much of the milling equipment was moved from the Company&apos;s mill at Goldroad, Ariz. Wartime restrictions necessitated wood construction and paper sheathing except for structures adjacent to the Bullfrog shaft. Construction started in September 1942 and milling in March 1943. Bayard ores are processed in a single-ection mill. About half of the ore treated during the past year was hoisted through the Bullfrog shaft and the rest was trucked from other shafts. Coarse storage includes four bins, two of 120 tons each for Bullfrog ores and two of 85 to 120 tons each, served by a truck ramp. The low capacity figure refers to

Discussion of the paper of R. B. Woodworth, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 107, November, 1915, pp. 2247 to 2312. R. B. WOODWORTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-This is a very long paper. It is a structural engineer&apos;s contribution to the art of mining and is written from his standpoint rather than from that of the mining engineer, and is, therefore, a study in the development of drilling structures by one who has made it his business to design structures rather than mechanism and machinery and rather than to utilize those structures in the actual exploitation of oil and gas. Drilling practice varies widely in different oil and gas fields. The , problems of western Pennsylvania are much simpler than the problems of the Mid-Continent and of the Gulf Coastal Plain and these again are simpler than problems of the Pacific Coast. The history of the commercial development of oil and gas is recorded in the annual publications of the U. S. Geological Survey and other bodies whose business it is to make record of statistics. The mechanical and structural features of the art of drilling have not yet received adequate treatment by the historian. Scattered references may be found on the subject in almost any work dealing at large with petroleum and its production. These references, however, are to those particular aspects of the matter that were contemporary with the publications themselves, but so far as I am aware there is no continuous and comprehensive account written of the development of drilling structures from their beginnings down to the present time, and certainly the more modern application of steel in the construction of such structures has not previously had an adequate discussion. With this latter phase of the subject I have been intimately associated, indeed, taking to myself the credit for having, in a way, been responsible more than any one else in the United States for the application of steel in the manufacture of drilling structures, and the purpose of the paper which is now before you is to record particularly the steps in that development while the subject is still fresh and the data available.

SUCCESS of the dislocation theory in formulating the transitional lattice theory proposed by Har-greaves and Hill in 1929&apos; is well established for low angle grain boundaries. The theoretical work of Burgersa and Read and Shockley,3 together with the experimental observations of Aust and Chalmers4 and Parker and colleagues,6 leaves little doubt as to the structure of grain boundaries with differences of orientations up to between 15" and 20". Beyond these angles, the structure of the boundary is not so clear, and is still a matter for conjecture. There have been notable experiments devised from which the data could be used to calculate energetics for possible arrangements of atoms in forming a large angle boundary.6 Most of these experiments deal with diffusion through and along the grain boundary. The recent work of Rhines and Cochart7 and Rhines, Bond, and Kissel18 was concerned with the relative movement of grains in aluminum bicrystals under constant tensile loads with their boundaries aligned at 45 " to the tension axis. The gliding along the grain boundary was cyclic and began after an incubation period. The velocity of gliding increased with the sum of the angular difference, 8, between the operative slip direction in the conjugate crystals and the angular difference between the active slip planes as measured between their traces upon the grain boundary. The initial gliding rate varied with temperature, and the logarithm of the average gliding taken over a considerable period was a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature: the slope gave an activation energy of 11,000 ±1,000 cal per mole. Since the rate of grain boundary shear is sensitive to the misorientation of the grains themselves, as shown by several workers,7,8 it is suggested that further work of this type might be fruitful in adding information regarding the behavior of boundaries under stress. The techniques devised by Chalmers" added impetus to the facility for observing grain boundary behavior, in that they provided a simple means for producing bicrystals of predetermined orientation so that the angle of the boundary could be controlled,

In this paper, as prepared for delivery at the Southern California regional meeting on Oct. 14, 1948, it was thought best to interpret the term "economics" in a rather broad manner and to include, in addition to the material losses and recoveries and associated monetary values (Part I), a limited discussion of the increased difficulties or the particular problem and the special requirements, as the particle sizes of the suspended particles range down from the relatively coarse to 100, to 10, to 1 micron or even to a fraction of one micron (Part II). Further, it is not quite in order to overlook entirely the community and individual health problems, although space requires the economics of this to be considered only very incompletely. Therefore, Part III, covering this phase of the subject, is very limited. This paper, then, is divided into 5 parts or headings as follows: I Losses and/or values in suspended solids. II Particle size. III Dust and fumes in community and individual living. IV Means and Procedures for dust and fume collection. V Description or examples of specific equipment in service and of the several types used for dust and fume collection. Because of the wide extent and wealth of subject material available and the space and time limitation imposed, presentation and discussion are less than originally planned. I—Losses and/or Values in Suspended Solids The weight involved in moving streams of industrial plant gases is commonly not appreciated, neither is their carrying power in the weight of solids maintained in suspension and moved with the gas stream from a point of origin or pick-up to a point of dissipation or settlement. These, however, are major weight figures; for example, in a modern iron blast furnace there may be five tons of gas for every ton of iron produced and by the time this blast furnace gas has been burned in stoves or under boilers the weight of gas discharged to atmosphere is on the order of eight times the weight of iron produced. Similarly for nonferrous metallurgy there may readily be from 10 to 20 times the weight of gases discharged to atmosphere as there is metal produced. A cement kiln in operation or a kiln in service to produce metallurgical lime may have on the order of 5 to 6 times the weight of stack gases as of clinker or lime produced, and at least the cement kiln, because of the very fine nature of its feed, is a very heavy dust producer. It may be noted that there have been two developments in progress for nearly three decades. Both are extraordinary in the industrial economics effected and in their ready availability to ever larger units of operation and their ever widening importance in industry, and both are productive of great quantities of finely divided material in furnacing. The first of these is the flotation process for ores, especially the metallics such as copper, lead, and zinc; and the second, powdered fuel combustion for power plant, industrial plants and metallurgical operations. Today, new developments, for example, flotation for the nonmetallics such as higher grade limestone for cement manufacture which requires still finer grinding and the powdered-coal-fired boilers with production ratings of over 1,000,000 lb of steam per hr, bring still more concentrated and hugely increased quantities of stack emission. Perhaps the honors for the greatest interest in the quantities and values escaping in waste furnace and equipment gases belong to the nonferrous metallurgical operations. Their record of achievement in the installation of dust and fume collection equipment, largely baghouses or Cottrell electrical precipitators, is exceeded by no other industry. Something of the magnitude and variety of equipment utilized in such recovery systems was covered by the writer in two papers presented to the Institute some 10 years ago.1,2 It is not intended to repeat the material of those articles, but it is thought that they complement this offering and should be noted. COPPER ROASTERS As the copper roasters are the first of the series of furnaces handling the copper-bearing concentrates in the usual copper smelter of today, it is in order to make them the first consideration. Multiple hearth sulphide roasters, not hard driven, often maintain their dust loss through exit gases at 3 pet or below of feed to furnace; in hard-driven or maximum-driven furnaces, exit gas losses often approximate 7 pet of charge with a ±2 pet variation for special conditions prevailing at some plants. A 5 pet loss of feed in a roaster gas exit, unless reclaimed, often makes the difference between a profit and loss operation, and in many cases substantial recovery is the very basis of dividend payments. JOHNSON, JR., Ashland, Wis. :-Is it true that titanium reduces the chill in chilling iron? If so, as I think Mr. Stoughton has stated elsewhere, then I do not see how titanium is beneficial in car-wheel mixtures. One of the most difficult things to do is to get a proper chill and a proper degree of toughness, and the goodness of an iron of the given composition for charcoal-iron purposes is denoted by the chill which it will take as compared with its composition. If titanium reduces that chill, then it does not seem to me as good for car-wheels as its absence would be, and I should like to have it explained what effect titanium has on the chill of a given iron. MR. STOUGHTON : It is true that titanium reduces the chill of iron quite noticeably, yet, at the same time, if I am correctly informed, 90 per cent. of all chilled-iron rolls are made to-day with the titanium treatment, and a great many car-wheels, but one has to make changes in the silicon added and also, if I am correctly informed, in the manganese. The advantage of titanium is that when the proper changes are made, so that we get the same depth of chill with the titanium as we otherwise would without, the chill is much harder than before, and also the body of the roll or wheel is tougher and somewhat stronger, especially under shock. MOST of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of roofing granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (Mining Technology, March 1944). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. MINING AND MILLING Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. The joined quarries extend 1200 ft. in a northeast southwest direction along the strike of the slate cleavage and are about 200 ft. wide. The working face is about 45 ft. high. The quarrying operation is rather simple: Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers, 1-in. and 1 1/4-in., with hollow drill steel, are used to undercut the quarry face with10-ft. holes. The face is "blown" and allowed to slump on the quarry floor. Loaded by a Marion electric shovel into trucks, the shattered rock is taken to the primary crusher 2500 ft. away. In addition to the normal quarrying operations, a drift into the northeast wall of the middle quarry was begun about 1935 and has advanced about 2000 ft. since then. Rooms have been driven at angles to the drift along choice beds of slate. The drifts and rooms have a roof more than 35 ft. high and the main drift and rooms are all more than 40 ft. wide. There is no cribbing at any place in the mine. Several of the rooms were driven upward on a 5º slope and in some of them there was stoping. Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers are used, and only wet drilling is practiced. When visited in January 1940, an electric shovel was operating at the head of the drift, scooping up the slate blasted out of the working face. This, too, is trucked to the primary crusher. Some of the better quality slate is saved for making slate shingles. The primary crusher, which is a No. 30 McCulley gyratory, receives the slate from the trucks and crushes it to about 2-in. size (Fig. I). This product travels by a 30-in. belt conveyor to Niagara vibrating screens with 2-in. holes. The minus 2-in. product moves to a storage silo by bucket

This paper presents a method for calculating the producing rate of a well as a function of time following steam stimulation. The calculations have proved valuable in both selecting wells for stimulation and in determining optimum treatment sizes. The heat transfer model accounts for cooling of the oil sand by both vertical and radial conduction. Heat losses for any number of productive sands separated by unproductive rock are calculated for the injection. shut-in and production phases of the cycle. The oil rate increase caused by viscosity reduction due to heating is calculated by steady-state radial flow equations. The response of successive cycles of steam injection can also be calculated with this method. Excellent agreement is shown between calculated and actual field results. Also included are the results of several reservoir and process variable studies. The method is best suited for wells producing from a multiplicity of thin sands where the bulk of the stimulated production comes from the unheated reservoir. The flow equations used neglect gravity drainage and saturation changes within the heated region. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a calculation method which can be used to predict the field performance of the cyclic steam stimulation process. The calculation method enables the engineer to select reservoirs that have favorable characteristics for steam stimulation and permits him to determine how much steam must be injected to achieve favorable stimulation. While the calculation represents a considerable simplification of physical reality and the results are subject to numerous assumptions which must be made about the reservoir, it has been found that realistic calculations can be made of individual well performance following steam injection. The duration of the stimulation effect will depend primarily on the rate at which the heated oil sand cools which, in turn, is determined by the rate at which energy is removed from the formation with the produced fluids and conducted from the heated oil sand to unproductive rock. A complete mathematical solution to this problem is a formidable task, and finite difference techniques would undoubtedly have to be used. The calculation method pre- sented here utilizes analytic solutions of simple related heat transfer and fluid flow problems. The method is sufficiently simplified that it can be used as a hand calculation, although the calculations are somewhat lengthy and laborious. For that reason, the analysis was programmed for an IBM 7044 digital computer. Well responses observed at the Quiriquire field in eastern Venezuela&apos; have been matched using this program after making suitable approximations for reservoir and wellbore conditions. One of the most valuable uses of this calculation method is to assess the effect of reservoir and proc-cess variables on the stimulation response. This paper contains results of several studies made of key reservoir and process parameters. Among the most important of these is the influence of prior wellbore permeability damage. If a well is severely damaged prior to stimulation, a higher stimulation response will be observed than if it is undamaged. If a portion of this damage is removed, a permanent rate improvement will occur. THEORY I)ES(:KJJ&apos;TION OF CALCULATION METHOD The process of cyclic steam stimulation is essentially one of reducing oil viscosity around the wellbore by heating for a limited distance out into the formation through the injection of steam. Suitable modifications of the calculation technique presented here can be made so that stimulation of wells by hot gas injection or in situ combustion can also be calculated. A schematic drawing of the heat transfer and fluid flow considerations included in the calculation method is shown in Fig. 1. In brief, the calculation assumes that the oil sand is uniformly and radially invaded by injected steam. For wells producing from several sands, each sand is assumed to be invaded to the same distance radially. In calculating the radius heated rn energy losses from the wellbore and conduction to impermeable rock adjacent to the producing sands are taken into account. After steam injection is stopped, heat conduction continues and oil sands with r < ra cool as previously unheated shale and oil sand at r > r, begin to warm. The effect of warming of oil sand out beyond r, has little effect on the oil production rate compared to the effect of cooling of the oil sand nearer the wellbore than ra. Thus, in computing the oil production rate, an idealized step function temperature distribution in the reservoir is assumed where the original temperature exists for r > rn and where an average elevated temperature exists for r < rn. Present estimates of copper requirement for defense indicate that nearly all the available metal will be required in the future for this purpose. Severe dislocations are, expected, but the objective is to distribute the copper available for civilian use in such a manner as to minimize these dislocations. Synopsis.-A description of the working of the mills of this company and the metallurgical practice in vogue, by which a remarkably. complex silver ore, averaging 54 oz. of silver per ton (run-of-mine ore), is treated to give a 95.66 per cent. extraction. The main features of the, processes are: The cyanide amalgamation of the high-grade ore. The cyanide treatment of the low-grade ore, after extremely fine grinding and close classification, in a caustic soda solution. The use of a wet desulphurizing process to break up refractory silver minerals. The substitution of aluminum dust for zinc dust as a precipitant. The recovery and shipment of over 13,000,000 oz. of silver in bullion at. 997 to 999 fine since this metallurgy was inaugurated, about 2.5 years ago. On the completion and successful operation of the mill to treat their . high-grade ore,1 the Nipissing Mining Co., under the general management of R. B. Watson, started a series of investigations of the possible treatment of the low-grade ore by the cyanide process, so that they would be in a position to market only silver bullion. These tests were run in July, 1911, on a large scale, by G. H. Clevenger, on an average mixture of Nipissing ore. The results obtained by a partial amalgamation followed by cyanide treatment gave an extraction varying from 90 to 93 per cent. and were sufficiently encouraging to warrant Charles Butters, the company&apos;s Consulting Metallurgist, in recommending that the new low-grade ore mill under contemplation should be a cyanide mill, instead of a concentrator. The cost of such a mill, capable of treating 200 tons per day, to obtain a 90 per cent. extraction at a working cost of $3 per ton of ore treated, was estimated at $250,000.

The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen&apos;s compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. Iv 1897, Roberts-Austen(l)$ found an arrest in the thermal curves of alloys of 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. zinc. This break occurred from 450° to 470° C. Shepherd, (2) working in 1904, was unable to detect any change in the direction of the thermal curve. In 1911, Carpenter and Edwards(3) confirmed the work of Roberts-Austen and called this a eutectoid transformation of beta to alpha plus gamma. Hudson&apos;) in 1914, showed that the beta constituent could be produced synthetically at temperatures below the transformation point. He believed the change in the beta was polymorphic in nature rather than a eutectoid. The work of Matsuda(32) in 1922 demonstrated this break by thermal analysis, microscopic investigations, dilatation, electrical resistance measurements, and a thermoelectric study. He believed the transformation to be continuous from 300° to 480° C., and comparable to the A 2 transformation in iron. Later, in 1924, Andrew and Hay, with electrical resistance measurements, confirmed Matsuda&apos;s work. Imai(28) showed the transformation to be progressive and therefore a function of the temperature rather than the time. He stated that it was neither a eutectoid nor an allotropic change of phase. Atomistically expressed, it was a change, not of atomic configuration, but of atomic energy of some kind; and again it was compared to the A 2 transformation in iron. Imai believed that his analyses by X-rays led to the same conclusion. In order to study this change, at 470&apos;C., in homogeneous 60:40 brass, Homerberg and Williams «0> and Homerberg and Shaw(41) quenched their material in iced brine to obtain the beta solid solution and reheated at various temperatures. At 200° C., a change in the microstructure and physical properties occurred. A fine-grained structure, which they termed alpha and which had the appearance of a sorbitic steel, appeared, with an increase in the tensile strength to 82,750 lb. per sq. in., and a Brinell ball hardness of 240 with 3000 kg. load.
