This paper addresses some of the financial risk hedging mechanisms available to a corporation contemplating entering the mining business at a significant level of investment. The approach which I have adopted is that of a case study relating to the risk hedging aspects of Brascan Limited's acquisition of 46% of Noranda Inc., formerly Noranda Mines Limited, followed by some remarks on options open to mining companies for reducing financial risks. To appreciate the rationale for Brascan committing over (Can.) $800 million to the natural resource sector, some knowledge of Brascan's parent company, Edper Investments Ltd., is required at the outset. Edper Investments, prior to acquiring a 48% interest in Brascan, controlled Trizec Corporation, one of the world's largest property companies. Edper also was involved in the financial services sector through Continental Bank of Canada and Hees International Corporation. For some considerable time prior to Edper's investment in Brascan, Edper felt a need to provide a better balance to its portfolio of property and financial services. Brascan was rich in cash, relatively unleveraged, and with important existing holdings in natural resources and consumer products. The acquisition of a controlling interest in Brascan provided an opportunity to balance Edper's portfolio of property and financial services with world class acquisitions in natural resources, supplemented by consumer products and financial services. The end result of Brascan's activities over the last few years is illustrated by the following analysis of the book value of Brascan's assets at the end of December 1983. The large emphasis on natural resources came about from the fact that for Canadians operating mainly in Canada, natural resources were attractive. In addition, the quality of Canada's reserves looked good to us. The polymetallic nature of many of Canada's orebodies offered a hedge against risk relating to any one metal. Put another way, the by-product metal credits offered a net operating cost advantage with respect to many of the metals mined. Our energy costs also appeared to provide Canada's natural resource industries with an advantage. We considered Canadian mining expertise as amongst the world's finest, as were the exploration equipment and technology developed in Canada. In addition, Canada offered a stable political climate and one we knew. Further, we felt the Canadian Government's future role in the industry would, on balance, be benign, partly because the Canadian content of the mining industry was very high in contrast to the petroleum industry. Granted, we could find cheaper sources of copper; however, to do so would involve venturing into regions where country risks were higher.

IT has been pointed out by Stead 1 that grains of considerable coarseness may be developed in steels containing from 3 to 5 per cent. of silicon, and in a previous paper 2 the present author has shown that under the proper conditions of annealing single grains having an area of 50 sq. cm. may be obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in more detail the conditions, promoting the growth of these grains, in the hope that the experiments described may throw some additional light upon the general problem of grain growth in metals. These silicon steels lend themselves particularly well to such experiments because of the ease with which the change in structure may be followed and because of the fact that the effect of the carbon present is largely obliterated by the high percentage of silicon. This forms a solid solution with the iron, which acts very much like a pure metal. This alloy has been found to have but one critical point, viz., Are. This point, determined by Roberts-Austen for Hadfield's 4 per cent. Si alloy, was found to lie at 703° C. Vigouroux3, in working with pure Fe-Si alloys, finds this point to rise from 750° C. for 0.5 per cent. Si to 860° for 6 per cent alloy, with a flat region in the curve from 3 to 4 per cent. Si. No accurate determination of this point has been undertaken by the present author, but it has been roughly determined to lie between 730° and 750°.

THE poor high-temperature oxidation resistance of the refractory metals becomes an important problem as higher operating temperatures are sought. A meaningful analysis of their oxidation behavior requires a knowledge of the phases that can appear during oxidation as well as their relative stability. Although several extensive investigations have been carried out to obtain this information for the W-0 system,1-10 serious inconsistencies still remain. First, the standard free energies of formation (AG°) determined in recent studies which used the solid electrolyte galvanic cell technique6,7,9 differ significantly from those obtained primarily from gas equilibration measurements.1,3,4,10 The disagreement is especially large for the highest oxides. These data have been used to predict the decomposition temperatures of WO2. 72 and WO2.90.1 A considerable extrapolation is required, resulting in a large uncertainty in the decomposition temperatures. Second, Bousquet and perachon3 have presented convincing evidence, ob- tained by gas equilibration measurements, in support of the long-contested existence of W30. Phillips and chang,ll on the other hand, were not able to observe this phase under similar experimental conditions. The purposes of this work, which is part of a continuing investigation of the W-Mo system, were to resolve the discrepancies between the AGO measured by gas equilibration and solid electrolyte galvanic cell techniques, to extend the latter measurements to lower temperatures, to redetermine the WO2.72 and WO2.90 decomposition temperatures, and to apply the more sensitive electromotive-force method to the question of the existence of W3O. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The measurement of ?G° of reaction by the use of calcia-stabilized zirconia solid electrolyte galvanic cells has been described previously.12 The method is based on the measurement of the difference in chemical potential of oxygen between an electrode containing the two oxides of interest and a reference electrode of known oxygen activity. Two different types of cell holders were used in this study. The first type of apparatus has been described earlier." It consisted of two solid electrodes separated by a disc of electrolyte. Both electrodes were exposed to the same stream of purified helium. With this design a gaseous transport of oxygen between the two electrodes is possible. The second type of apparatus, which has also been described earlier,14 effectively separated the two electrode atmospheres. It utilized a closed-end impervious, calcia-stabilized zirconia tube that was open to the atmosphere. The tube served as an electrolyte for the cell and provided a means for separating the anode compartment, which was held under a static vacuum, from an air reference cathode. The cells and reactions of interest are described in Table I. High-purity tungsten metal was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and the Allied Chemical Corp. Table II contains an analysis of each material. WO3 was prepared by oxidizing the metal in air at approximately 600°C in high-purity recrystallized alumina boats and by the dehydration of reagent-grade tungstic acid in alundum boats. The two methods of preparing WO3 resulted in slightly different purities.

Coarse grained high purity aluminum was tested in creep at temperatures of 400° to 1200°F to develop subgrain structures. Measurements of subgrain size, distribution, and rotation were made from X-ray diffraction patterns. Subgrain size and distribution were checked metallographically and the size was compared with average slip band spacing. The slip family was determined for several specimens. THE interest and research recently evident abroad in the role of subgrain formation and polygon-ization as a contribution to the creep of metals at elevated temperatures is deserving of greater attention in this country. Such metallic subgrains can be defined as macroblocks existing within the grains. The general observation has been that the macro-blocks which belong to the same grain have a maximum difference in orientation of a few degrees. In spite of the considerable amount of work that has been done since Jenkins and Mellorl observed the "division of existing crystals into smaller units when deformation occurs at an annealing temperature," the subject of subgrain formation is only now receiving truly active discussion and investigation. The existence of subgrains has been revealed by metallographic methods, as in the work of Jenkins and Mellor,1 and by X-ray methods, first applied to this problem by Homes.' Hirst3 and Calnan and Burns4 applied the back-reflection Laue technique to the study of coarse grained specimens. Wood et al.5 and Greenough and Smith' examined the ring obtained with a back-reflection camera for the study of fine grained specimens. In addition to the above, the transmission technique was used by Wood.6 A special technique was developed by Guinier and Tennevin8 in order to improve the resolution. Metallographically, the subgrains have been observed directly on the surface of deformed specimens by Wood et al.,3 or have been made evident on repolished surfaces by applying a suitable etching reagent. The latter technique, first suggested by Lacombe and Beaujard,9 was then improved by Wyon and Crussard.10 Subgrains can be formed in single crystals after small amounts of bending followed by heating after this cold work, or during deformation at elevated temperatures. The first phenomenon was analyzed by Cahn11 for the simple case of pure bending followed by annealing. Cahn suggested a mechanism of subgrain formation based on the dislocation theory and called this phenomenon "polygonization." He extended this mechanism to the more complex case of local bending, such as the bending which may occur when a polycrystalline specimen is deformed in tension. Cahn's suggestion was later found quite consistent with the results obtained by Dunn and Daniels." An explanation has been presented recently regarding the formation of subgrains during deformation at elevated temperatures by Chang and Grant.'" In general, there are two schools of thought on the subject. One, according to Wood et al.,5 is that subgrain formation is a mechanism of deformation which is operative under certain conditions in the same way that the slip process is the mechanism of deformation which is operative under other conditions. The boundaries between the subgrains undergo a viscous flow which contributes substantially to the deformation of the material. The second, according to Cahn,13 Wyon and Crussard,10 and Chang and Grant,18 is that subgrain formation is the effect of simultaneous deformation and annealing and is,

The static, rapid, and shock-loading response of rock is of interest to many in the field of rock mechanics. For example, the effects of loading rates on strength and stress-strain characteristics of rock are quite important in defining input loading for use in the design of underground protective installations. Response data on rock subjected to shock loading over a wide range of pressures are also vital in the field of underground nuclear testing. In addition, material response is needed in design of shock-absorbing liners. A number of investigators have reported that ultimate compressive strength of rock increases with increased rates of loading.1-6 Wuerker3 stated that modulus of elasticity, obtained from sonic determinations, increased in some rocks by a factor as high as 4.5. It appears that only a limited amount of work has been done on comparing static modulus and modulus obtained from impact testing.6 Phillips4 showed that with increased rates of loading the deformation decreased. More recent work by Atchley and Furr5 showed that when moderate-strength concrete is stressed with increased loading rates, the axial strain at failure increased. One would expect this to occur if we think in terms of purely elastic materials. For example, if E is constant and maximum strength [amax], increases, the axial strain would also increase. However, in rock testing thus far we have worked almost exclusively with nonhomogeneous and inelastic rocks. From this fact alone the increase in axial strain with increased load application is noteworthy.

On August 22, 1966, just 20 months after writing sales agreements with Japanese steel mills, Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd made its first contractual shipment of 52,000 tons to Yawata Iron and Steel Co Ltd. As world news, the event was not spectacular. But to mining men it represented an astonishing achievement. Twenty months of feverish effort and the expenditure of more than $100 million had created a large open-pit iron ore mine, a crushing plant, storage and load-out facilities for sized ore, and a supporting township at Mt Tom Price; a 182-mile standard gauge railway; and port and loading facilities for a nominal loading capacity of 6000 tph as well as a port town, Dampier, on King Bay. The project was executed in the sparsely inhabited, arid, dissected-plateau country of the Hamersley Range in the northwest sector of Western Australia. Hamersley, 60% owned by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Pty Ltd and 40% by Kaiser Steel Corp, holds sale contracts for ore and pellets valued at $770 million. The main contracts are with the Japanese, who are to be supplied with 65.5 million tons of ore during the 16 years from August 1966 to August 1982 and 18 million tons of pellets over a 10-yr period beginning in early 1968. Of lesser importance at this time, but presaging trends, are contracts for a total of nearly 1.5 million tons to be shipped to England and Western Europe during the years 1966-68. A pellet plant with a capacity of 2 million tpy is now under construction at Dampier and is to be on stream early next year. Another interesting project for which the plans are set, is a desalination plant for sea water to supply industrial requirements and potable water for the town of Dampier.

ALTHOUGH arsenic has a very high vapor pressure and vacuum distillation appears to be a likely method for its removal from lead, the published literature contains virtually no information concerning the vacuum removal of arsenic from lead. Caldwell, Spendlove, and St. Claire1 mention arsenic in their investigation of the removal of volatile metals from lead by vacuum distillation. They do not, however, give any data for arsenic removal or refer to any actual experimental work involving arsenic dissolved in lead. Moriyama, Kozuka, and Miura2 have determined the activity of arsenic in dilute As-Pb alloys in the temperature range from 450" to 600°C using a closed galvanic cell. They found that the activities of both arsenic and lead showed a positive deviation from ideality at 600°C. In view of the lack of experimental data regarding the vaporization of arsenic from As-Pb alloys, a limited vapor pressure study was made on liquid alloys containing from 0.5 to 3.3 wt pct As in lead at 703°C. The pressure of As4(v) above the alloys studied was determined from weight-loss data collected by means of the inert-gas saturation method. The experimental apparatus and procedure used were similar to that discussed by Alcock and Hooper9 with modifications as described by the authors., The technique involved was one of passing a known volume of inert gas over the alloy to be studied in a known amount of time and determining the loss in weight of the sample. Because of the low vapor pressure of lead at 703"C, the observed weight loss could be attributed solely to the vaporization of arsenic as the tetratomic molecule AS43 Measurements of the apparent vapor pressure were repeated at different inert-gas flow rates until from three to five values were obtained which were independent of inert-gas flow rate. This value of the apparent vapor pressure was taken to be the equilibrium vapor pressure of the alloy under consideration. The vapor pressures measured in this investigation have been converted to the activities of arsenic in As-Pb alloys, Table I, by use of the data compiled by Elliott and Gleiser5 for the vapor pressure of pure arsenic. The standard state for arsenic was chosen as the pure, hypothetical, supercooled liquid. The activity of arsenic was calculated from the fourth root of the ratio PAs,/PAS,. The low magnitude of the vapor pressures given in Table I explains the difficulty en- countered by earlier workers in successfully vacuum distilling arsenic from very dilute As-Pb alloys. The data shown in Fig. 1 indicate that the As-Pb system behaves ideally. The apparent outlier represented by the alloy containing 1.43 mol pct As is a result of the fact that the pressure of As, above the alloy was barely detectable by the experimental procedure used in this investigation. Because of this, the apparent vapor pressure determined for this alloy could be in considerable error. Moriyama, Kozuka, and ~iura' have reported that arsenic shows a positive deviation from ideality in dilute solution in lead. However, details of their results have not been made available. This research was made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation (GK-196) for which the authors are very appreciative.

The need to grind volcanic-sedimentary ores very finely (d80 < 20 µm) so as to liberate Pb, Zn, and Cu sulfides from their pyritic gangue causes difficulties in selective flotation. The pyrite, which accounts for 70-80% of the mineral content, is insufficiently depressed by the usual pH and NaCN techniques. To determine better depressing methods, the surface evolution of pyrite during flotation was followed by ESCA spectroscopy to compare the stability range in the Eh-pH diagram. Surface iron hydroxide was formed, which is the main pyrite-depressing factor. NaCN appears to play a more restrictive part, since no ferricyanides were detected, except for very small amounts at pH 7.

INCREASING variety of interests among mining geologists is becoming more and more marked, as the frontier of their science and of its applications continues to expand. Each of the traditional lines of inquiry provides its crop of new and better defined problems, and answers to them are being found in far more precise terms than in the past as older uncertainties .are swept away with the sharper techniques and the even sharper ideas of modern geology. A glance over the assemblage of projects and publications in 1939 reveals conspicuous activity in many different parts of the front, such as the attack on the controversial question of the acid or alkaline character of ore-forming solutions, the place of mineral districts in the larger structural framework of continents, and the place of ore shoots in the local patterns of districts. Instructive comparisons are being made which cut across lines of older correlations or which reinforce them by pointing out heretofore ne-

An extension of the thermodynamic theory has been made for the case of irreversible growth processes occurring by the motion of an interface. The theory is applicable to such diverse phenomena as diffusion, growth in recrystallization, continuous grain growth, growth of carbides, etc., growth of eutectoid products, growth in solidification, recovery, "slipless" flow, etc. THE publication of a recent book1 has served to focus attention on a very powerful means of treating certain irreversible processes. This method which has been formally described as the thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes is applicable to processes which involve an approach to equilibrium and for which the deviations from equilibrium are small. The irreversible processes can be classified into three groups: chemical reactions, transport processes (diffusion, heat and electrical flows), and relaxation phenomena involving a degradation of internal energy to more stable states. The limits of applicability of the theory can be precisely defined1,2 for each type of irreversible process. For example, in a chemical reaction at constant temperature and pressure, the Gibbs free energy released per mol in the process should be less than the thermal energy, RT. Another type of irreversible process, which sometimes involves a combination of the first two of the above-mentioned groups, is treated in this paper. This process is one characterized by the motion of an interface separating two regions having different values of free energy and may be briefly described as a growth process. Prigogine2 and Herring3 have treated special cases of this type of process. Previous conscious applications of the theory in metallurgy have been limited to the field of diffusion, one of the transport processes. Darken,4 Bardeen,5 Prigogine2 and others have made significant contributions in this respect. Some other applications of the theory are described in this paper. The Theory The thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes is based on the work of Onsager,6 DeDonder,7 Prigogine2 and others. A resume of the theory has been given by Prigogine2 and DeGroot.1 A brief description of the theory follows, although for a complete understanding the reader is urged to read the references. It is first assumed that the change in entropy, even for a system removed from equilibrium, is given by dS = [dU + pdV - Si µi, dn, - Sk Pk dxk]T-1 Using this expression, the irreversible entropy production in the system is calculated by subtracting the contribution to the change in entropy of the system by transfer of heat, work, or matter from the surroundings. I-1, i.e., Ji = Sk Lik Xk (i = 1, 2, . . . n) [I-2] Generally, there is a degree of freedom in choice of the fluxes and forces. However, for all the choices consistent with Eq. I-1 the Onsager8 relations, based on the principle of microscopic reversibility, namely, Lik = Lki, are valid. The coefficients Lik, depending upon the choice of the conjugate fluxes and forces, may be more or less dependent upon the parameters defining the state of the system. In general, the proper choice of fluxes and forces utilizing Eq. I-1, makes the coefficients Lik independent of time. Also, because many of the three classes of irreversible phenomena have already been treated,1,2 a proper choice can be made by analogy. In any case, the validity of Eq. 1-2, from whatever choice made using Eq. I-1, must be tested by experimentation. The Industrial Minerals Div., of the AIME meeting scheduled for Nova Scotia Sept. 8-12, 1953, promises to be one of the outstanding gatherings ever attended by the group. Complementing the educational value of technical sessions will be the superb fishing, boating, golfing, and tennis facilities. [ ] Sponsor of the meeting is the Nova Scotia Mining Society. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Industrial Minerals Div., AIME have been invited to participate. The land immortalized by Longfellow&apos;s poem, Evangeline, still contains much of the forest primeval-enough to make it a wonderful vacation spot for delegates and their families. Its scenic beauty is almost unmatched in the area north of the border. Quoting from the Nova Scotia tour book; "Nova Scotia, once known as Acadia, is 374 miles long, from 600 to 100 miles wide ... Excepting the Isthmus of Chignecto, 17.5 miles wide, the province is entirely surrounded by water, no portion being more than 50 miles from the sea . . . has 4625 miles of coastline, guarded by 356 lighthouses and fog alarms. The province is renowned for its picturesque coastline, its harbors dotted with islands, its deep valleys and multitude of beautiful lakes." A progress report on the plans for the meeting will be made monthly. Thus far, technical sessions will be held at Keltic Lodge, Ingonish, N. S. The lodge will also be the starting point for many of the field trips and social events which are in various stages of planning and development.

The occurrence of twins in a iron, generated during cooling through the ?-a transformation, is well established,1-8 but this phenomenon has been nearly ignored during the past 20 years. It is the purpose of this note to call attention to the prevalence of such twins and to illustrate their appearance. The work of paxton7 and Kelly8 has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that for Neumann bands (mechanical twins) in a iron the twinning plane is (112) and the twinning direction <III>. The agreement with McKeehan&apos;s earlier work4 on transformation twins indicates that both types of twins in ferrite follow the same twinning law. There is little doubt of this conclusion, but it could be strengthened by a microbeam X-ray determination of the orientation relationship between a single ferrite grain and a transformation twin within that grain, as in the technique used by Kelly8 on Neumann bands. US 4,192,851-Recovery of elemental sulfur and the metal values from a complex sulfide ore containing two or more of the metals zinc, lead, copper, silver, gold and/or other metals. A mixture of ore and sulfuric acid and/or spent electrolyte is flowed at optimum temperature and pressure in a quiescent zone to dissolve selected metals and sulfur and coalesce the sulfur. ThE recent emphasis on producing boron fibers by reacting boron trichloride and hydrogen on a hot tungsten wire has brought about a renewed interest in the tungsten boride phase diagram. The papers discussed in the following pages were presented during two sessions of the Geophysics Education Committee of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Feb. 17 and 18, 1941. At the first meeting, to consider the "Influence of Geophysics upon Geology Curricula," this Committee was joined by the Geophysics and Mining Geology Committees of the A.I.M.E., the Society of Economic Geologists, representatives of the American Geophysical Union, and delegates from the Committees on College Curricula and on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Quentin D. Singewald and Sherwin F. Kelly presided. At the ensuing session, especially emphasizing the integration of geology, physics and chemistry for the solution of earth problems, the joint participants with the Geophysics Education Committee were the Geophysics Committee, and representatives of the American Geophysical Union and of the Committee on College Curricula of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Richard M. Field and W. R. Chedsey presided. In the following summary of the discussion at the two meetings, written discussion submitted subsequently is not differentiated from that offered orally at the session. A provisional report of the Geophysics Education Committee was presented at the second session, and some of the following discussion refers to it. This report has not been printed (it is anticipated that a more comprehensive, final one will be rendered at the 1942 annual meeting), but a few mimeographed copies of this provisional report are at the A.I.M.E. headquarters and will be mailed on request. . Dr. W. P. HAYNES presented some notes prepared by Dr. F. H. LAHEE, Chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists&apos; Committee on College Curricula. This Committee&apos;s inquiries reveal the general opinion that a four-year academic preparation is inadequate, five or six being advisable. The fundamentals, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English composition, should be stressed in the first three years, with specialization in the last two or three years. Some companies provide an apprenticeship period, and themselves give additional training.. During academic years more attention needs to be given to engineering training, to field mapping, and in geology to stratigraphy and sedimentation. The amount of mere memory work should be cut, and men trained to observe and reason. Dr. Lahee emphasized the need of more adequate preparation in English composition, because of the inability of many graduates to compose acceptable reports. SHERWIN F. KELLY pointed out that much time in university training, which ought to be devoted to technical subjects, was taken up with English courses. He emphasized that it is the part of the universities to demand of the high schools that the students they send to the university be properly trained to speak and write English. Prof. W. T. THOM protested against the crowding of high-school material into already overcrowded college curricula. C. E. DOBBIN, chairman of the Committee on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, described briefly the work of his committee in publicizing geology, and said that it found a widespread popular interest in the subject but a lack of appreciation of its importance. He recommended that attempts to coordinate the works of geologists and geophysicists be expanded somewhat, toward the further developing and encouraging of a "species of geopolitician" capable of assisting the progress of geology and geophysics by more vigorous advertising of

The activity of aluminum in solid Cr-A1 alloys has been measured by an isopiestic technique between Cr-A1890&apos; and 1126" and 13 and 80 at. pct Al. The integral free energy of mixing has a minimum value of —5600 cal per g-atom at 59 at. pct Al. The maximum solid solubility of aluminum in chromium was determined to be 43 at. pct Al, and the composition limits of the compounds CrA14, Cr4A19, and Cr5Al, at 1000"~ were found to be 79 to 80, 66 to 70, and 59 to 63 at. pct Al, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of the Cr-A1 system have been investigated as part of a thermodynamic study of aluminum-transition metal systems.172 Little information is available on the equilibrium properties of the Cr-A1 system. The heats of formation of solid Cr-A1 alloys have been determined by Kubaschewski and Haymer at 600" and low-temperature specific heat data have also been obtained.~ More extensive work has been performed on the phase diagram, and a compilation has been provided by Hansen and Anderko,~ their phase diagram at elevated temperatures being essentially based on the work of Bradley and LU.~ The high-temperature portion of the phase diagram shows an intermediate phase CrA14 decomposing peritectically at 1018°C and existing at 82 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. They also identified the compounds with solubility limits of 72 to 75 at. pct A1 at 1000°C, and Cr5A1,, existing at 61 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. The maximum solid solubility of aluminum in chromium at 1000°C was found to be 46 at. pct Al. These elevated-temperature data were obtained by examination of quenched samples and were considered as less precise than the lower-temperature data. Koester, Wachtel, and Grube7 have revised the phase diagram as a result of their magnetic susceptibility and X-ray study. The results of this work differ appreciably from those of Bradley and Lu at temperatures above 800°C. The CrA1, compound is given as existing between 79 and 81 at. pct A1 at 1000°C, and they do not indicate the presence of a CrA13 phase reported by Bradley and Lu. They also report the compound Cr4Alg as having solubility limits of 66 to 70 at. pct A1 at 1000°C, while Bradley and Lu show this compound stable only up to 870°C. Koester et al. state that the high-temperature modification of the compound Cr5A18 is stable down to 1125"C, and not 980°C as stated by Bradley and Lu, and that the low-temperature modification of Cr5Al, has a range of homogeneity of 58 to 63 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. They also report that the maximum solid solubility of aluminum in chromium is 43 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An isopiestic method was employed which has been successfully applied to the determination of aluminum activities in solid ~e-All and Ni-Al alloys. Alloy specimens were held at different positions in a temperature gradient and were equilibrated with aluminum vapor from an aluminum reservoir kept at the temperature minimum of an impressed thermal gradient in a closed alumina system. Diffusion of aluminum into the specimens occurred until equilibrium was reached, at which the partial pressure of aluminum in each of the specimens was given by the vapor pressure of the pure aluminum reservoir. The activity of aluminum referred to liquid aluminum as the standard state in a given equilibrated sample at temperature T could therefore be expressed by: vapor pressure of pure aluminum at _ the temperature of the reservoir Vapor pressure of pure liquid aluminum, at specimen temperature T Since both the temperature of the aluminum reservoir and the specimen temperatures were determined experimentally, and the vapor pressure of pure aluminum is known as a function of temperature,&apos; the activity of aluminum in a given aluminum alloy of known composition could be calculated. Initial runs were made with samples consisting of pure chromium chips placed in alumina crucibles. These runs exhibited large inconsistencies, indicating that equilibrium was not attained. High aluminum content Cr-A1 alloy powders were therefore substituted for the pure chromium specimens. The starting composition of the alloys was adjusted through experimentation until the concentration change necessary to attain equilibrium was small. In this manner, consistent results were obtained in reasonable times. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Alloy specimens were prepared from chromium of 99.997 pct minimum metallic purity: with 0.028 to 0.038 pct H, 0.0002 pct N, and 0.27 to 0.46 pct 0 (Aviquipo, Inc.). The aluminum had a purity of 99.99+ pct and the following impurities: 0.003 pct Cu; 0.002 pct S; 0.002 pct Fe; 0.001 pct Pb; 0.001 pct Ga (Aluminum Corp. of America). MINE hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety, is the value drived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum di- ameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value. Fig. 1 gives a family of characteristic curves for 13/8-in. improved plow steel hoisting ropes of 6 x 19 or 6x21 construction with hemp core. The curves will hold for all rope sizes of this specified quality when they are subjected to an acceleration rate of 1.608 ft per sec2. As acceleration rates of most deep shaft hoists are close to this value, this family of curves is presented as a standard. Deviation is slight for other rope sizes. Note that for 0, which is the most important, the deviation is within the width of the line on the graph. In a comparison of values for ropes of 5/8-in. and 21/4-in. diam the deviation ranges from a maximum 1.2 pct at 0 ft to 0.6 of 1 pct at 5000 ft. The value of 5.55 is the same for all ropes at 2500 ft. The tabulated columns to the left of the curves are values of total connected load for each size of rope from 5/8-in. to 21/4-in. diam inclusive. With each of these connected loads the safety factor characteristic curve for the rope will be as indicated.

M ETHODS by which Americanization is developed among the foreign workers at the mines in the United States, with particular reference to mines of the Pennsylvania coal region, were discussed in a most constructive way at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute. Arthur Notman, of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., as chairman, guided the discussion. Americanization was defined by E. E. Bach, !chairman of the Institute&apos;s Sub-committee on Americanization, who said: "Americanization applies either to the native-born or foreign-born and is that process of assimilation which guarantees the full functioning of American citizenship. Naturalization papers merely entitle one to the privileges of citizenship."
