Poly crystalline specimens of copper, and copper with various additions of zinc, were tested in plane-bending fatigue. In tests performed at a constant stress, the fatigue life of copper increased slightly with the addition of up to fifteen per cent zinc. There was a sharp increase in fatigue life as further additions of zinc of up to 35 pct were made. Surface observations showed that the coarse slip bands that are characteristic of fatigue became narrower as the concentration of zinc increased. The rate of crack propagation also decreased with increasing zinc content. It is suggested that the fatigue behavior is controlled by cross slip processes. CROSS slip occurs when dislocations move from one primary slip plane to another along a connecting or cross slip plane. The primary and cross slip planes have a common slip direction. Wide stacking faults, having low energy, tend to make cross slip more difficult. According to recent theories, the ability of a material to cross slip is important to the formation and propagation of fatigue cracks. McEvily and Machlin2 have examined this concept experimentally by fatiguing single crys tals of lithium fluoride, sodium chloride, silver chloride, and KRS-5.* The latter two materials ex- hibit easy cross slip, while the former two do not. Normal rapid fatigue failure was obtained in the silver chloride and KRS-5 specimens, whereas it was much more difficult to achieve in sodium chloride and lithium fluoride crystals. Furthermore, numerous slip band extrusions and intrusions were found in silver chloride and KRS-5 crystals, whereas only one isolated extrusion was found in lithium fluoride and none was found in sodium chloride. McEvily and Machlin also consider that there is no clear-cut demarcation between crack initiation and propagation. The intrusion-extrusion process, which initiates crack formation, continues ahead of the cracks to allow propagation of these cracks along slip bands. The process of cross slip is therefore important not only to crack initiation, but also to crack propagation. Holden4 postulates that fatigue crack growth is dependent upon cross slip and thus upon stacking-fault energy. Using an X-ray microbeam technique, he found a cyclic subgrain structure in fatigued aluminum and a-iron. Holden suggests that micro-cracks develop in the densely-packed sub-boundaries ahead of the main crack front, and when sufficiently numerous join up to promote crack growth. The ease with which a subgrain structure could form would depend upon the ability of the dislocations to cross slip, and thus upon the stacking-fault energy. Hence in aluminum, which has a high stack-ing-fault energy and in which cross slip is easy, Holden found that the relative rate of fatigue crack propagation was considerably greater than in stainless steel, a low stacking-fault energy material. It has been shown by a number of investigators that the probability of forming deformation stacking faults in copper increases as zinc is added.5-7 Cross slip should, therefore, become more difficult as the zinc concentration is increased. In order to check the validity of the foregoing theories, it was decided to test copper and copper with various additions of zinc in plane bending fatigue, and determine to what extent their fatigue properties are dependent upon their ability to cross slip. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fatigue tests were carried out on polycrystalline OFHC copper and various copper-zinc alloys with 5, 15, 20, 30, and 35 wt pct Zn. The Cu-Zn alloys were obtained commercially in sheet form. Test specimens, as shown in Fig. 1, were machined from sheet that had been reduced to an approximate grain size of 0.040 mm, the heat-treatment procedure being similar to that of Feltham anc copley.8

This study investigates whether oxygen consumption during segregated forward combustion may be affected by natural convection. Linear theory indicates that thermal instability occurs in a horizontal porous medium when the modified Rayleigh number N 'Ra exceeds a critical value of about 40. Most experimental results, including those described here, indicate this value to be about an order of magnitude smaller. N ', is derived from "differential similarity" and the proper time scale factor is also obtained. The critical value of N'ra for a horizontal, water-saturated porous medium at atmospheric pressure subjected to a uertical temperature gradient was found to be about 3.0. The ambiguity in the value of N'R, arising when fluid properties cannot be assumed constant is indicated. Natural convection was observed for oblique systems below N 'Ra , while simultaneous horizontal flow did not affect N Racrit. The expected range of values for the various parameters pertaining to segregated forward combustion is indicated and the corresponding values of N 'Ra calculated. Only under very favorable conditions, such as high permeability, high pressure and low top temperature, can the critical value of N 'R, be exceeded. Thickness of the convection layer should not become too large, since the time required to obtain significant mixing is proportional to the square of the thickness. For an oblique combustion frant the conditions for significant mixing may be less strenuous. LNTRODUCTION Laboratory1,2 and field314 experiments have shown that a markedly upgraded oil can be produced by in situ forward combustion. Under certain conditions injected air may move through a high permeability, gas-saturated channel over the oil-saturated layer, while combustion takes place, exclusively, at the horizontal interface (Fig. 1). Such a channel may be a natural gas cap, or it may result from a forward combustion process in which injected air and combustion gases fingered through the top of the formation, causing a premature breakthrough at the production well. In this particular case of segregated forward combustion, the air stream moves parallel to the combustion front. Molecular diffusion and transverse mechanical dispersion will be insufficient to cause all the oxygen in the air stream to reach the combustion front. When the oxygen in the air stream is not completely consumed in the combustion process, it will reach the production well and create a serious fire hazard. In addition, the reduced efficiency may make the process economically unprofitable while also serious corrosion problems may be experienced in the production we11.3 This undesirable situation should, therefore, be prevented. However, in a situation as depicted in Fig. 1, an unstable temperature gradient exists in the gas phase. The combustion is taking place at the lower boundary at a nearly constant temperature that may be anywhere from 600 to 1,200F, depending on the conditions. The upper boundary of the gas phase is overlying, impermeable rock; its temperature might be around 100F, but may increase to 300F or higher due to conduction and convection as the combustion process continues. This represents a steep temperature gradient and it is conceivable that under those conditions free or natural convection will take place in the gas

THOUGH the fall meeting of the Coal Division was held in the heart of the anthracite section, at Hazleton, Pa., the bituminous industry was well represented also, and the two groups found much common ground for discussion. The' technical part of the program was confined to two sessions in the morning and afternoon of the first day, Friday, Oct. 14, the evening and the following day being reserved for field trips and social functions. The attendance more than met the expectations of those in charge of the arrangements; there seemed no hint of depression here.

A study of certain fundamental characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives has been made. A discussion is given of the factors affecting the life of the cartridge and the relation between explosive strength and oxygen content. The explosive properties of L.O.X. cartridges packed with a variety of lampblacks, gas blacks, and other materials have been experimentally determined by means of the ballistic pendulum, Bichel gage, and measurement of the rate of detonation. DURING the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered. The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. During the past twenty years, and especially in the last decade, hydraulic cyclones have found increasing application in metallurgical processing as classifiers and, under special circumstances, as thickeners. To a more limited extent cyclones have been used to extend heavy, or dense, medium separation into the finer size ranges, and several attempts have been made to separate dispersions of immiscible liquids with a view to use in the field of liquid- liquid extraction. Before considering several aspects of conventional application, less conventional applications and some potential uses of modified cyclones, the mechanism of separation within a cyclone and the effect of the, major variables will he summarized.

The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

During the past few years there has been a growing demand by coal operators for detailed information about the performance characteristics of the various dryers now being manufactured, preferably in such a form that the information could be used to determine the type of dryer best suited to a particular drying problem. A few operators have been desirous of going even further, because they are of the opinion that present-day dryers are not properly designed and that fundamental studies of dryer design should be undertaken. This growing demand for a method of dryer evaluation and the indicated need for fundamental research resulted in the sponsorship by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. of a project at Battelle Memorial Institute to investigate the thermal drying of coal. In investigating this problem, the most feasible method of attack appeared to be a survey of active operations to determine the present status of the thermal drying of coal. Data were obtained, usually by actual plant tests with the cooperation of the various preparation engineers and their staffs, for 9 screen-type dryers, 8 rotary-type dryers, 3 continuous-pallet-type dryers, 2 flash-type dryers, I tray-type dryer, and I cascade-type dryer. The testing program provided: (I) data for 24 coal-drying operations, (2) information about the inherent characteristics of the coals dried, (3) information about the previous treatment that the coal had received, and (4) information about operating costs. The data obtained through the dryer survey and relationships determined from the data make it evident that all of the types of dryers included in the survey can be operated with the same degree of effectiveness if each type of dryer is used to dry the sizes of coal for which it is best suited. It should be noted that it is usually undesirable and often impossible to dry different sizes of coal in one type of dryer. By use of the data in the report, any prospective dryer user, having determined the surface moisture percentage and screen-size analysis of the coal to be dried, the tons of water to be removed per hour, and the final surface moisture percentage desired, should be able to determine with a fair degree of accuracy: (I) the difficulty of the drying problem, (2) the approximate cost of drying, (3) the required dryer inlet gas temperature and volume and exhaust gas temperature and volume, (4) the type of dryer to use, and (5) the size of dryer required. The method of testing the dryers and determining the difficulty of drying can be used by operators already having dryers to check the performance of their particular dryer and determine whether they are operating effectively. Considerably more information was obtained from the survey of thermal drying than was anticipated when the survey was first considered. Attempting to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic" and "macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also untlerly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all sepregation effects. Undercooling and Nuclei Formation It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus temperature. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number illcreases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. Temperature Gradients and Heat Dissipation during Freezing Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period. A process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is under development at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The new procedure includes a two-stage fluid-bed treatment in which the pelletized concentrate with 33% Cu and 7% S is first desulfurized to about 0.5% S in an oxidizing atmosphere, and then metallized by reduction with hydrogen. The reduced product is melted with flux to separate metallic copper from the gangue. The metal must be refined to remove residual sulfur and iron. The pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment is an important feature of the process, because it permits shorter reaction time, decreases dusting, and facilitates subsequent processing.

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore such as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks" scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body.

This paper presents useful charts for conversion of various viscosimeter units into centipoises and graphically summarizes published investigations of the viscosity of air, water and natural gas at high temperatures and pressures. Where possible, charts and correlations were constructed to cover a range of temperature (60°F. to 300°F.) and pressure (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs. to 8000 lb. per sq. in. gauge) encountered in oil fields. Correlation charts, for the purpose of predicting crude oil viscosity and solubility behavior at oil field temperatures and pressures, were constructed from an analysis and correlation of 1332 viscosity and solubility observations from 953 crude oil samples taken from 747 oil fields. Of these fields, 501 are in the United States, including 75 in California. Of the 1332 observations, 1215 were viscosity values, including 786 of gas-free crude oil, 351 of oil saturated with gas, and 78 under-saturated with gas at pressures above the bubble point. Results show that crude oil viscosity at various reservoir conditions can be predicted with average deviations varying from 24.2 per cent for gas-free crude oil to as little as 2.7 per cent for undersaturated crude oil "above the bubble point." The solubility of crude oil may be predicted from oil gravity and saturation pressure with an average deviation of 22.0 per cent from observed values. In conclusion, it is shown that the viscosity of a gas and gas-saturated crude oil may be predicted within the accuracy of most reservoir computations. Viscosity is a measure of flow resistance; common units are in centipoises (cp.). The object of this report is to present conversion charts and simplified 'correlation charts showing the viscosity behavior of air, water, gas and crude oil and gas-saturated crude oil under oil field temperatures and pressures, which have been known to be as high as 300°F. and 8000 Ib. per sq. in. gauge under subsurface conditions. The viscosity of a liquid or gas is important because it is a measure of its fluidity, or its ability to flow through pipe lines or oil sands. Viscosity of air has become important because it is being used in secondaryl,2 recovery projects. The viscosity of natural gas and water at reservoir conditions is useful because they are almost universally associated and produced with crude oil. The viscosity of gas-saturated crude oil at reservoir pressures and tem peratures is of particular value in making estimates of oil reserves3 and rate of oil recovery from flush pools when production decline data are limited. The Pao deposits of iron ore are in the State of Bolivar, Venezuela, near Upata, about 30 miles south of the Orinoco River and 90 miles east of Ciudad Bolivar. They were discovered 4 or 5 years ago and have not yet been developed to the stage of mining. In March-April, 1929, the writer devoted a week to the examination of these deposits. The maps, drill records and chemical analyses presented herewith were derived from original sources, and the field photographs were made by the writer. The petrographic and metallographic data are from notes by C. S. Ross and M. N. Short, of the U. S. Geological Survey, who have kindly collaborated in these special phases of the study. The Iron Obebodies Topography and Accessibility The deposits are in a region of low mountains representing northern outliers of the Guayanan Highlands. These mountains reach altitudes of 1800 to more than 2000 ft. above sea level, as determined by aneroid barometer. The iron ore is found on mountain crests that reach altitudes of 1915 to 1930 ft., and may be followed down precipitous slopes for 200 • to 300 ft. or more. The greatest vertical range in outcrop is nearly 400 ft., and drilling has indicated that the ore extends to this depth below the surface in one place, at least. The superior hardness of the iron ore accounts for the preservation of the local mountain crests with the intermediate valleys eroded in softer granitic rock. The deposits of iron ore are reached by a private road for automobiles branching northeast from the Ciudad Bolivar-Upata road, a distance of about 12 miles. This road was used in 1928-29 by trucks for transportation of food and camp supplies, gasoline, drilling equipment, etc., but was not suitable for the transportation of iron ore. Between Ciudad Bolivar and the iron-ore area the western two-thirds of the automobile road passes through nearly level, open country known as the savanna, largely used for grazing cattle. A method of measuring oil saturations in cores or sand packs by neutron scattering is described. This method permits local SatUrations to be measured in a core enclosed in a steel pressure vessel without interrupting the flow. calibration data and a saturation distribution measurement obtained with the apparatus are included by way of illustration. Introduction In laboratory flow experiments designed to study the mechanism of oil production it is frequently necessary to measure the oil saturation in a core or sand pack containing Oil, gas, and perhaps brine. It is sometimes desirable that the saturation measurement refer to a relatively small portion of the core, so as to eliminate end effects; that it be made without interrupting the flow, and that it be applicable to a core enclosed in a steel Pressure vessel capable Of withstanding the Pressures encountered in petroleum reservoirs. None of the usual methods of measuring saturation meets all Of these requirements. To measure the gas saturation by observing the apparent compressibility of the gaseous Phase1 would require the interruption of the flow and would give an average saturation for the whole core. An electrical conductivity method is available for measuring brine saturations,2,3 but it is not applicable to oil. A radioactive tracer might be used if a suitable substance could be found that would dissolve in the oil, emit gamma radiation, and not be adsorbed on the sand, the steel core holder, or in an aqueous- phase. The large gamma-ray background from the mass of radioactive oil in other parts of the apparatus might, however, be undesirable. There remain for the saturation measurement methods involving the absorption or scattering of some penetrating radiation produced outside the apparatus. It might be possible to use X-rays or gamma rays; but these radiations would be so much less strongly absorbed and scattered by the oil than by the steel walls of the core holder and by the sand that it seems doubtful that much precision could be attained. A method of measuring oil saturations in cores or sand packs by neutron scattering is described. This method permits local SatUrations to be measured in a core enclosed in a steel pressure vessel without interrupting the flow. calibration data and a saturation distribution measurement obtained with the apparatus are included by way of illustration. Introduction In laboratory flow experiments designed to study the mechanism of oil production it is frequently necessary to measure the oil saturation in a core or sand pack containing Oil, gas, and perhaps brine. It is sometimes desirable that the saturation measurement refer to a relatively small portion of the core, so as to eliminate end effects; that it be made without interrupting the flow, and that it be applicable to a core enclosed in a steel Pressure vessel capable Of withstanding the Pressures encountered in petroleum reservoirs. None of the usual methods of measuring saturation meets all Of these requirements. To measure the gas saturation by observing the apparent compressibility of the gaseous Phase1 would require the interruption of the flow and would give an average saturation for the whole core. An electrical conductivity method is available for measuring brine saturations,2,3 but it is not applicable to oil. A radioactive tracer might be used if a suitable substance could be found that would dissolve in the oil, emit gamma radiation, and not be adsorbed on the sand, the steel core holder, or in an aqueous- phase. The large gamma-ray background from the mass of radioactive oil in other parts of the apparatus might, however, be undesirable. There remain for the saturation measurement methods involving the absorption or scattering of some penetrating radiation produced outside the apparatus. It might be possible to use X-rays or gamma rays; but these radiations would be so much less strongly absorbed and scattered by the oil than by the steel walls of the core holder and by the sand that it seems doubtful that much precision could be attained. THE Comstock Lode is in Storey County, Nevada, and extends in a north and south direction through the towns of Virginia City and Gold Hill, with a total length of 4.27 miles. Its mines have produced silver and gold to a known value exceeding $400,- 000,000 since 1859, when the work first began. More than $126.000,000 was paid in dividends by the mining companies, although much more than this was probably realized from the ore, because many milling companies were independent companies owned by the directors and superintendents of the mines. The milling companies' contracts called for an extraction of only 65 per cent and, as much of the ore was worth $100 a ton and up- ward, they must have recovered substantial amounts for their own accounts over and above this guarantee. Gold was discovered in the spring of 1850 by a party of Normons bound for California. The discovery was made at the mouth of Gold canyon near Dayton, on the Carson River, about 10 miles south of Virginia City.

I DESIRE to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. A tabulated statement, giving location of borings, date, progress, total cost, itemized cost per foot, etc. 2d. Section showing strata bored in Nos. 5 and 10 holes at Mt. Carmel, see Plate VI. 3d. Section showing strata bored in No. 19 hole at Hazleton, see Plate VI. 4th. Photograph and description of drill No. 2. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomer¬ates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideration in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out.
