The following paragraphs have been extracted from a recent publication of the U. S. Department of Commerce; Miscellaneous Series, No. 65, " German Trade' and the War, " which portrays the industrial, commercial and economic conditions of Germany, at the present time, and has been compiled largely from sources published in Germany. Iron and Steel The Krupp company, the greatest of the German munition works, was faced at the outbreak of the War with the disappearance of its great international business, but this was amply compensated by orders from Germany and her allies, and the activity of the company has been greatly extended. The general meeting of December 1914, voted an increase in the capital to 250,000,000 marks. The gross profits of the company, amounting to 61,900,000 marks in 1912-13, have been more than doubled during the war. The gross profits were 128,260,000 marks in 1914-15 and 143,360,000 in 1915-16. Large sums have been written off; 10,000,000 marks have been placed in the pension fund during the war, and 5,000,000 were appropriated for workmen's dwellings in 1915. Thirteen million marks have been devoted to war assistance in the last three years. The assets of the company were valued at 967,000,000 marks at the end of 1916. For the year 1916-17, the company paid a dividend of only 10 per cent., but set aside 85,425,000 marks for depreciation. The Bismarckhütte in Upper Silesia, capitalized at 16,000,000 marks, with a bonded indebtedness of 7,907,500 marks in 1913-14, reported 3,912,000 marks of net revenue from operation for that year. During the three years of war the revenue increased successively to 8,077,000, 11,805,000, and 16,994,000 marks. While the capital remained unchanged, and the bonded indebtedness was but slightly reduced, the dividends paid during the last four years were increased from 9 per cent. in 1913-14 to 15, 25, and 30 per cent. during the war. During the year 1916-17 the amount written off, chiefly on the works and plant account, was 10,553,000 marks, or nearly as much as the total set aside during the three preceding years. The turnover for that year reached a sum many times the amount of the capital. At the end of 1916 the company's shares were quoted at 275, as against 144 at the end of 1913.

TO improve blasting methods it is necessary to know how the explosive force acts and how rock resists this force. Because of the tremendous power developed within milliseconds and the great number of other factors directly affecting the technical and economic results, an analysis of the fundamentals of blasting theory is difficult. But since the rules used for layout design and for calculations of size of explosive charges are based on theoretical assumptions, complete knowledge of blasting theory has great practical importance in mining. Analysis of Blasting Theory: It is interesting to note the opinion of blasting experts with respect to contemporary blasting theories. F. Stussi; Professor of the University of Zurich, stated: "We do not have enough experience yet to change our army engineering regulations in blasting and base it on new fundamentals. It is our duty to collect more practical data and to do more research in blasting to close this gap." K. H. Fraenkel,2 editor of the Manual on Rock Blasting published in 1953 in Sweden and written by well-known Swedish, German, Swiss, and French blasting and explosive experts, said: "To the best of our knowledge no suitable formulas for civil blasting work are to be found in the American, French or German literature." Present blasting theory is based upon two assumptions. 1) The blasting force of explosive acts in concentrical and spherical form. 2) Rock resistance against the explosive force is directly proportional to the strength characteristics of the rock. The first classical formula based on theoretical fundamental in blasting theory for explosive charge calculation was introduced by Vauban, a military engineer who lived 300 years ago. It was Vauban who proposed the famous formula L = w3 q, where L is the explosive charge, w = line of least resistance, and q = specific explosive consumption proportional to the weight of rock. Later engineers used q as proportional to the strength of the rock. Since Vauban's time different suggestions concerning blasting theory have been proposed. However, the principles stated at that time so affected the thinking of later generations that his formula is still in use and practically unchanged. The first controversy concerned the form of crater. It was found that geological features of rock affected its form. The factor q was analyzed thoroughly by Lares3 and later by Ohnesorge," Weichelt,5 Bendel,6 and others, but the assumption remained that resistance against explosive force is directly proportional to the strength of the rock blasted. The greatest controversy, which has not yet been settled, concerned w. It was noted that w3 is more appropriate for long lines of resistance and w2 for lines of resistance less than 15 ft. Based on the assumption that the explosive force acts concentrically and spherically, spacings between charges were limited to distances not greater than the length of line of least resistance. Sometimes larger spacing is recommended, but this is due to the advantageous geological and physical properties of rock and not to the action of an explosive force as such. In addition to the classical formula, empirical formulas are used widely. These state that the explosive charge is directly proportional to the volume of blasted rock in cubic yards, and the amounts of explosive required are usually expressed in pounds of explosive per cubic yard of rock. Empirical and classical formulas are contradictory. In the empirical formula, but not in the classical formula, explosive charge is taken proportional to all three space axes: line of least resistance, spacing, and bench height. In spite of this contradiction, both formulas give good results. This is possible because as now practiced the explosive charge calculation for heavy burdens need not be highly accurate. Each, open pit or quarry, usually works with a certain relation between bench height and line of least resistance and between charge spacing and line of least resistance. When these relations are changed, however, the specific explosive consumption q changes greatly. This is one of the reasons why the principles on which the formulas are based appear to be incorrect. This paper contains solutions of the differential equation of diffusion in binary alloys if the diffusion coefficient is an exponential function of the concentration of one of the components. THE general differential equation for one-dimensional diffusion in a binary system can be written as: where c is the concentration of one of the two components in any suitable units; x, the distance from a reference plane; t, time; and D, the diffusion coefficient. Hartley and Crank&apos; have pointed out that eq 1 with conventional length units for measuring the distance x holds only if the alloy can be regarded as a rigid framework. In general, this is not the case, especially if the lattice parameter varies appreciably with composition. If a modified coordinate system is used instead of an orthodox system based on the centimeter a:: length unit, eq 52 is obtained, which has the same general form as eq 1 and is generally valid. The necessary transformations are presented in the appendix. If&apos; D is independent of concentration, analytical solutions of eq 1 are known for numerous boundary conditions. If D depends on concentration, solutions based on known analytical functions are not available. Among others, Boltzmann2 and Matano3 have shown that the concentration c depends only on (x/t1/2) in the case of diffusion between two semi- infinite spaces with uniform initial concentrations: c = c, for x < 0, t = 0, i.e., x/tl/2 = — x [21] c = c2 for x > 0, t = 0, i.e., x/tl/2 = + a Moreover, Boltzmann and Matano have shown how D may be calculated as a function of concentration over the whole range of composition from c -c, to c = c2 if c as a function of (x/t1/2) for the initial conditions stated in eq 2 has been determined experimentally. Thus, for instance, in principle, the diffusion coefficient in silver-gold alloys may be calculated as a function of concentration for the whole range of composition from only one diffusion experiment with a couple of pure silver and pure gold welded together. If the diffusion coefficient D as a function of concentration c is known, a solution of eq 1 for boundary conditions as stated in eq 2 with arbitrarily chosen values of c, and C2 may be wanted. For instance, if the diffusion coefficient in an alloy A-B as a function of concentration has been derived from an experiment with a diffusion couple involving 0 and 30 pct B as initial. concentrations, the calculation of the concentration distribution in a diffusion couple involving other initial concentrations, e.g., 5 and 20 pct B, may be desired. This problem may be solved by numerical or graphical integration of eq l. There were present eleven Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests. The Secretary, Bradley Stoughton, was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Board of. Directors of the American Bureau of Welding. A communication from a member of the Institute regarding simplified spelling was laid on the table. The following appropriations were made for the year. 1919: $250 to the Institute of Metals Division, $250 to the St. Louis Section, $100 to the Columbia Section. An invitation was received from the Western Society of Engineers to the Institute to use the facilities of that society during the A. I. M. E. Meeting in Chicago. The Bulletin of the Institute was presented to the French Congress of Engineers. There were elected twenty-eight members, eighteen associates, and three junior associates. The status of one member was changed from junior associate to associate. Four members were reinstated. An extension of time was granted to one member for payment of dues. The dues of four members on active military duty were suspended. Dues were remitted of four members who have been paying over thirty years, and who are each over seventy years of age.

A party, consisting of George I. Adams, of the United States Geological Survey, A. H. Purdue, of the University of Arkansas, and Ernest F. Burchard, was engaged, during the summer of 1902, in the study of the zinc- and lead-deposits of Northern Arkansas. An extensive report on this field is now in preparation. The following preliminary statement of results and conclusions is made in advance of the final publication, which will be accompanied by detailed geologic maps and other illustrations and a fuller treatment of the subject. Location.—The Northern Arkansas field embraces Marion county and adjacent portions of Boone, Baxter, Newton and Searcy counties. Outside of this area there are a few scat tered mines, notably in Sharp and Lawrence counties. The mining development lies north of the Boston mountains, in what is known as the Ozark Plateau. The country has a broken surface, as a result of dissection by streams, and there are numerous exposures of the mineral-bearing horizons in the valley slopes. This has greatly facilitated prospecting. History.—Lead-ore was discovered in Northern Arkansas by the early explorers and pioneers, and at first was utilized for rifle-ballets. Later, it attracted considerable attention, and in the &apos;50&apos;s was smelted in the vicinity of Lead Hill. There was a revival of the industry during the "70&apos;s, but the cost of transportation was so great that it was practically abandoned. Zinc-ores at first attracted little attention, probably because they were not so well understood. Before the Civil War, however, some zinc was smelted. In the &apos;80&apos;s, prospecting was carried on generally throughout the field, and resulted in finding zinc at so many places and so readily accessible that

During the last 15 years, the bucket wheel has become increasingly popular as a mining tool. Being a large-capacity continuous mining excavator, the machine offers low actual operating costs and low unit costs. Of German origin, the bucket wheel has now appeared on the American mining scene as well as in such other places as Australia, Northern Rhodesia, South Africa, Congo, Indonesia, and India. Patented in 1913, the first practical application waited until 1920 when a bucket wheel excavator was placed in operation at an open pit lignite mine in central Germany. This initial experiment met with little success due to difficulties in solving the technical problems of the machine&apos;s construction rather than to the design of the wheel itself.

microscopic ohservations on alloys of organic trzaterials show that dendrite arms can melt off under normal conditiorzs of growth. This occurs because of the interactiorz of&apos; heat and matter fluxes during dendritic growth. The re melting occurs where the den-drite arms are joined onto the main deizclrite sterrz. Many detached crystals can be produced in this fashion. It is postulated that this remelting phenornenon occurs in metal alloys, giving rise to the equi-axed region in castings. Experiments peyformed orr castings of transparent materials support remelting as a primary source of detached crystals. Ob~ervations an equiaxed tones in metal castings are discussed in terms of this and other mechanisms. It is concluded that the partial remelting of dendrites is on important mechanisnl for producing the equiaxed regions in castings. THE freezing of a casting can be divided into three regions: a chill zone formed near the mold wall, a columnar region, and a third region, at the center of the casting, which is called the equiaxed zone. The origin of the grains that comprise the equiaxed region is the subject of this paper. We will first outline the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the origin of the equiaxed region and discuss some recent experiments which cannot be explained by these theories. We will then present some microscopic observations of dendritic growth which have led us to conclude that the equiaxed zone in castings can arise from partial remelting of dendrites. This proposal is supported by observations on transparent castings. Finally, we will discuss several observations on metal castings which could not be explained previously, and which can be accounted for by the present proposal. Previous Mechanisms. Winegard and Chalmers3 pointed out that the molten central region of an ingot could be constitutionally supercooled, because of the solute layer at the growing interface. In this supercooled region, nucleation on particles could occur, giving rise to the equiaxed crystals. Another mechanism has also been suggested,4y5 that the nuclei originate in the chill zone then float or are carried by convection to the center of the casting, where they grow to produce equiaxed crystals. In this case, all the crystals nucleate immediately on casting, so this mechanism will be termed "big-bang" nucleation. Walker&apos;s Experiments. J. L. Walker has made observations on the solidification of nickel and Ni-Cu alloys which cannot be accounted for by either of the above mechanisms. In studying the grain size resulting from freezing of nickel at various undercoolings, walker6 found that at large undercoolings the grain size was small, due to mechanical nucleation, as discussed by walker7 and Horvay.&apos; At small undercoolings, the grain size was large, and the growth dendritic. In Ni-Cu alloys, however, for initial undercoolings starting from just below the melting point and extending for a hundred or so degrees of undercooling, fine grains were also observed. Samples were undercooled 200 Centigrade degrees without nucleating, and were then heated 130 Centigrade degrees so that the undercooling was 70 Centigrade degrees, and nucleated. The samples had a small grain size, indicating multiple nucleation. There were no heterogeneous nuclei in the liquid which could operate at the temperature of growth. Constitutional supercooling could not have been greater than the supercooling of the initial melt, since the temperature rose as the freezing continued. walker -as also shown that a Ni-Cu alloy which can be undercooled to below its solidus will produce typical columnar and equiaxed regions when cast into a cold mold. This alloy could not reach a temperature below its solidus by constitutional supercooling. It could not, therefore, have nucleated heterogeneously. A relaxation peak thought to be due to the presence of C-C pairs in cobalt has been observed. It exists both above 420"C, where cobalt has the fcc structure, and below 420"C, where cobalt has the hcp structure at equilibrium. The effect is thought, however, to be caused by motion of C-C pairs in the fcc phase in both instances; enough retained fcc phase was deduced to be present at temperatures below 420°C to make the phenomenon possible. Measurements of the aniso-tropy of the effect in single crystals of various orientations of fcc phase showed the effect to have a maximum value in longitudinal strain for a [loo] crystal and a minimum value for a [Ill] crystal. This observation seems to rule out the possibility of (110) nn pairs being responsible for the effect. From measurements of the strength of the relaxation in the alloys, we reach the conclusion that both the binding energy of the pairs and the specific relaxation per pair are smaller than corresponding quantities for interstitial pairs in bcc metals. DETERMINATION of the details of atom placement of small atoms such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in metals has been a difficult problem. In certain alloys such as martensite extensive departure from random placement of the interstitials can be deduced from X-ray diffraction off the atoms of the host metal, but such diffraction techniques are of small help for small departures from randomness. A technique which does offer promise in the latter instance is the anelasticity of these interstitial alloys. Most previous investigations using this property have utilized alloys in which the solvent is one of the bcc metals, alloys such as These studies have been interpreted to show that an interaction exists between interstitials which causes them to form clusters in more than random numbers; the binding energy of interstitials in such clusters has been deduced to be about 0.1 ev per atom (for small clusters of size two to four atoms). Similar investigations have been carried out on close-packed solvent metals, Ni-C by and Diamond and Ag-O by Papazian.8- In both of these svstems. no relaxation of the singly dissolved interstitial is expected, so an-elastic behavior of the interstitials must be caused by their association in some cluster or complex of non-cubic symmetry. Since relaxations in these alloys were observed to have a strength which varied about as the square of the interstitial concentration, the effect was deduced to be caused predominately by motion of i-i pairs in the crystal. A striking difference is observed in relaxation strength of interstitial alloys between the bcc and fcc systems. The specific effect per interstitial atom is much larger for the alloys in the bcc crystals than for those in fcc crystals. Comparing clusters of size two in the Nb-O system4 and the Ni-C system,7 one finds the magnitude of the anelastic effect per interstitial atom in the former to be some 100 times greater than that in the latter. Such a difference in relaxation strength might be caused by a difference in concentration of the pairs (this means a higher binding energy in the bcc crystals). It might also be caused by a large difference in shape factor of the elastic strain field about the pairs between the two cases (a much more noncubic shape factor would be required for the bcc crystals). This investigation was undertaken to examine the possibility of C-C pair formation in alloys of cobalt and carbon using anelastic effects. Since cobalt has both fcc and hep phases, it seemed to offer the chance that measurements over a range of frequency might permit comparison of properties of pairs in the two crystal types. Although this goal was not reached, several significant facts were deduced from the observations. 1) An anelastic phenomenon believed to be associated with the presence of C-C pairs in cobalt exists. It has many features in common with that observed in nickel. 2) The effect is thought to be caused by pair motion in the fcc phase. 3) Calculations of the relaxation strength A, which includes as a parameter the product of the pair concentration, C, and the square of the shape factor &apos;, show that this parameter is much smaller in the CO-C alloy system than in the interstitial alloys in the bcc systems. 4) From this finding, we reach the conclusion that both the binding energy of C-C pairs in cobalt and the specific relaxation strength per pair are small compared to corresponding values for such pairs in the bcc systems. 5) The crystalline anisotropy of the effect permits the identification of reasonable geometrical models of close C-C pairs. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Method of Measurement. The anelastic measurements-—all of which were constant frequency measurements of internal friction—were designed to study the expected phenomenon in both the hcp and fcc structures in cobalt. Knowledge of similar measurements in Ni-C alloys led us to believe that the damping peak should occur below the transformation temperature for frequencies near 1 cps and above for frequencies near 100 kcps. This surmise was correct. The low-frequency measurements were made on wire specimens using a vacuum torsion pendulum; the damping peak was found at about 2&apos;70°C at a frequency of 1 cps. The short-time tensile-strength test, while it has not attained the practical importance of the creep test at elevated temperatures, has the advantage of being rapid and is satisfactory for determining relatire strengths. For platinum and its alloys, which frequently are used at high temperatures under ill-defined conditions, the short-time test provides useful data that aid in the selection of the most promising alloy for each use. Measurements have been made upon 13 alloys, using wire 0.0031 in. in diameter, the choice of alloys and of wire size being determined by the requirements of a practical problem. Later the measurements were extended to higher temperatures by the use of heavier wire, 0.010 in. in diameter. Apparatus The use of fine wire made the necessary equipment very simple, since no effort was made to measure the elongation. A small platinum-wound horizontal furnace was used, 1/2 in. in internal diameter by 1 ft. long, with the wire threaded through it. The wire, clamped at one end while the other ran over a ball-bearing pulley, of a total length of 29 in., was loaded directly by running sea sand into an attached basket, making the rate of loading and not of elongation constant. The sand flowed from a funnel, under a head of 3 in., into the basket 3 in. below the orifice, at the rate of 170 grams per minute. Pulley friction and bending resistance of the wire as well as the force of impact of the sand could be neglected, being 3 grams and 0.5 grams, respectively. Furnace temperature was uniform within ±5° C. over a length of 3 in., although a drift with time occurred, the largest amount being 20" C. No provision was necessary for a controlled atmosphere. In making the measurements, the furnace was brought to equilibrium before being used, and the temperature was measured with a platinum platinum-10 per cent rhodium thermocouple and a high-resistance pyrometer before and after all the tests at one temperature. THE Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (Public Law 552, 82nd Congress) was approved on July 16, 1952. It incorporates, as Title I, the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May 7, 1941 (Public Law 49, 77th Congress), which gave Federal inspectors only the right to enter coal mines for inspection and investigation purposes but no power to require compliance with their recommendations. Title II contains the enforcement provisions of the act; its purpose is to prevent major disasters in coal mines from explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip or man-hoist accidents. At this point a brief account of events that pre- ceded the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act seems appropriate. The hazardous nature of coal mining was recognized by the Federal Government as long ago as 1865, when a bill to create a Federal Mining Bureau was introduced in Congress. Little was done, however, until a series of appalling coal- mine disasters during the first decade of this century provoked a demand for Federal action. As a result an act of Congress established a Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior on July 1, 1910. The act made it clear that one of the foremost activities of the Bureau should be to improve health and safety in the mineral industries. One of the first projects selected by the small force of engineers and technicians then employed was to determine the causes of coal-mine explosions and the means to prevent them. By investigations after mine disasters the fundamental causes and means of prevention were soon discovered, and the coal mining industry was informed accordingly. However, despite this knowledge and the enactment of State laws and the Federal Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, mine disasters continued to occur with disheartening frequency and staggering loss of life. The devastating explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine on December 21, 1951, resulted in the death of 119 men. The Orient disaster rekindled the memory of the Centralia, I11., disaster of March 25, 1947, which caused the death of 111 coal miners. These two tragedies ultimately brought about enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d&apos;Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

When we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liège, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a model for such undertakings. It is known as ((Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d&apos; Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. PRIOR to 1912 the only rail outlets for a large part of the coal regions of Carbon and Emery Counties. Utah, were over single-track lines of the Southern Utah R.R. and Castle Valley Ry. Companies, forming a route extending from Mohrland and Hiawatha, Utah, to a point of connection at Price, Utah, with what is now The Denver and Rio Grande Western R.R. Co. These two tap lines were poorly and inadequately constructed, with impracticable grades, lacking in equipment, and incapable of being put into condition to serve this region and handle the output of the mines, to say nothing of making possible increased production and new development. Any plans for the new development and increased output necessarily involved new and adequate railroad service. It was essential, not only that additional facilities be provided but that these facilities be in the form of an efficient and up-to-date railroad providing an independent through operation from the coal mines to a point of direct connection with the lines over which the product would be distributed to consumers. LATTICE parameters of molybdenum of various purities are summarized in Table I. The latter shows that the parameter fluctuates between 3.1467 and 3.1475A. The room-temperature expansion coefficient a is also not well-known as values from 4.90 to 5.20 x 10-6 can be found in the literature.=-&apos; It, therefore, seemed appropriate to repeat the measurements under exactly controlled conditions, using high-purity Hilger molybdenum powder (containing 0.0015 wt pct of Fe, 0.005 of Si and traces of other elements) and a 99.95 pct pure Sylvania Electric preparation (containing Cr, Fe, Ni, Si, Sn, and C in amounts of 50 ppm of each and in still smaller amounts Cu, Pb, Mg, and Mn). Of course, both samples could have contained at least 0.01 pct of oxygen in form of a surface oxide. However, oxygen, because of its small solubility in molybdenum, does not influence its lattice constant.g The determinations were made in a cylindrical precision X-ray camera, 64 mm in diam, the temperature of which was controlled within *0.05"C, by inserting it into a special thermostat." To exclude the film shrinkage effect (after the development of the film), the asymmetric film placement method was used." Absorption corrections (e.g., by extrapolation)" were unnecessary because of the use of a thin Li-B-glass fiber (about 0.08 mm in diam) which was fastened to the sample holder of the camera and dusted with the fine molybdenum powder. Cum radiation of the wavelength 1.389350 kX was applied because it produced in 30 min the line (420) having a high Bragg angle of about 81.6 deg. The conversion factor of 1.00202 gave the results in angstroms. To obtain the expansion coefficient a, exposures were made at various temperatures t, see Fig. 1, on at least two films at each temperature. The films were measured with a componator and the lattice constants a were calculated. The expansion coefficient was found from: where a2s is the constant at 25°C and A is the change in a and t. The same equation (knowing a) was used to reduce all the constants obtained at various temperatures to that of 25"C, Table 11. The probable error S507p (at a 50 pct confidence limit) was calculated from the reduced constants:

G. E. Agar (Manager, Minerals Processing Research, International Minerals & Chemical Corp., Skokie, III.) — The author notes a discrepancy between the parameters a and ß which are the slopes of the size distribution and energy-size modulus plots respectively. The reason for the discrepancy and the systematic decrease in the magnitude of a with grinding time is abundantly clear from the work of Fuerstenau8 on dry grinding. Fuerstenau shows very clearly in his Fig. 5 that at short retention times the parameter a is the same as that obtained by sizing over the complete size range. From this figure, it is obvious that sizing to only 400 mesh gave distribution curves similar to Mular&apos;s - that is, the slope apparently decreased systematically with increased grinding. As a consequence of the improper determination of a, the magnitude of ß given by Mular must be larger than the true value. In order to demonstrate this, the following Fig. 6 was taken from Mular&apos;s paper (his Fig. 1). Anthropological diggings have revealed that the American Indians carried on intertribal trade in flint, obsidian, ochre, and other mineral commodities, indicating that mining was practiced before the arrival of the white man from Europe Carbon datings from the native copper pits on Isle Royal and Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, have yielded dates as early as 5555 BC for this mining. As early as Pliocene time, Eolithic-man fashioned artifacts of stones probably found on the surface, but by late Quaternary, Neolithic man was sinking shafts and mining underground for flint. Because placer gold was easily recognized and easily worked, it was used for ornamental purposes by nearly all cultures before other metals were discovered The Chaldeans hammered copper objects approximately 4500 BC and copper was used in India and China about 3000 BC. An ancient trail from the Nile to the Sinai led to the mines of copper and turquoise Paintings and bas-reliefs of Egyptian tombs dating around 3000 BC depict maps, mining, and smelting in this area. It is interesting that despite this widespread and long history of mining, Agricola records that the first mining laws were developed by the Greeks at Laurium about 700 BC. All of the base metals are known to have been produced in small quantities during the Colonial period in America, but perhaps the first commercial production was the iron ore shipped from Virginia to England in 1608, followed by lead in 1621. Among the earliest companies formed in America that still survive (according to the standard reference yearbooks), were: the Jackson Mining Co., predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range, Michigan, in 1844; the Sussex Zinc and Copper Mining & Manufacturing Co., fore-runner of New Jersey Zinc Co. in 1848 (although the Franklin-Sterling body was discovered in 1640); the five companies, Pittsburg and Boston, Quincy Mining, Pewabic, Huron Mining, and Minesota all formed in the decade (1844-1855) that followed the rediscovery of Keweenaw copper, were combined into Calumet and Hecla; and Vermont Copper Mining Co. in 1853 Although southeast Wisconsin lead-zinc was discovered in 1690, Mine La Motte in southeast Missouri in 1720, placer gold in California in 1848, Comstock Lode in 1859, Leadville in 1860, Cripple Creek in 1891, no surviving companies of those early mining periods exist.
