The creep behavior of hot-rolled, hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys was investigated in the temperature range from 0.43 to 0.53 TM. Secondary flow was found to originate primarily from strain-induced gvain growth where grain boundary )nigvation served to relieve the strain energy of distortion introduced by slip, grain boundary sliding, and subgvain formation. The extent to which this recovery mechanism operated was determined by the ratio of grain width to the spacing between planar fibers of TiZn,, compound particles generated in these alloys during rolling. When this ratio was unity, creep resistance demonstrated a marked improvement. In this condition, which was fulfilled by annealing following rolling, structural stability was enhanced with decreasing grain size below the equicohesive temperature (-0.5Tm), while the reverse was true above this temperature. TITANIUM concentrations approaching the eutectic composition of 0.23 wt pctl have been shown to promote a significant increase in the creep resistance of rolled zinc,2 The alloying effect created with titanium is somewhat unique; a structure closely resembling that of a fiber-reinforced metal composite can be developed which selectively modifies creep strength in preference to other mechanical properties. In an earlier investigation,~ the present authors found that, while the fiber network, composed of individual TiZn,, compound particles, had a distinct influence on rolled texture, the crystallographic variations produced were of minor importance with respect to creep. Rather, creep resistance seemingly increased when the grain size appeared to coincide with the in-terfiber spacing. The work described here was undertaken to explore this effect in greater detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three zinc-base alloys containing 0.05, 0.12, and 0.16 wt pct Ti were prepared from CP zinc and iodide titanium in the form of 4 by 2 by f in. chill-cast ingots. The melting and casting procedures for these alloys have been detailed el~ewhere.~ Individual ingots of each alloy were hot-rolled at 200°C (392°F) to total reductions of 10, 25, 50, 75, and 90 pct in from one to five passes, respectively, employing a 10-min reheat prior to each rolling pass. With grain, tensile-type creep specimens with a 1-in.-long, -in.-wide gage section were machined from the rolled strips for test purposes. Annealing studies to explore the influence of grain size on secondary creep flow were carried out at 400°C (752°F) in argon for times extending up to 60 min. The grain-size effect was evaluated in terms of average grain width and length values statistically derived from lineal intersection measurements.4 A similar method was applied in establishing the average interfiber spacing, i.e., average perpendicular distance between adjacent planar fibers. The creep characteristics of the alloys were investigated by means of constant-load and constant-stress creep tests. The former tests were conducted at 25°C (77°F) under an initial stress of 10,000 psi, while the latter were performed in the range from 25°C (77°F) to 90°C (194°F) at stress levels varying from 8000 to 22,000 psi. Total specimen strain, as determined with Budd HE-1161-B strain gages, was in excess of 0.10. Maintenance of constant stress was achieved through periodic load reductions made at 0.01 strain intervals to compensate for the attendant incremental reduction in specimen cross-sectional area. The maximum indicated error in the applied stress at these strain intervals was less than 3.0 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Constant-Load Creep. In an effort to clarify the in-terrelation between interfiber spacing and grain size with respect to the creep resistance of the Zn-Ti alloys, their separate effects on secondary creep rate were determined as a function of titanium content and rolling reduction. These results are set forth in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. The average grain diameter plotted in Fig. 2 was resolved from average grain width and length values. No data are presented for reductions of less than 50 pct because of the inability to obtain consistent measurements on these strips. The curves of Fig. 1 indicated that, for a given titanium content, a decrease in interfiber spacing, as produced with increasing reduction, promoted a decrease in creep rate. Depending on titanium content, however, wide variations in creep rate occurred at the same interfiber spacing suggesting that interfiber spacing, by itself, has little or no influence on creep resistance. Grain size, on the other hand, decreased progressively with both increasing rolling reduction and titanium content, the effect of which led to a pronounced decrease in creep rate, particularly when the average grain diameter became smaller than 3.0 x 10"4 in., Fig. 2. The continuity of this relationship tended to support the view that grain size rather than interfiber spacing was predominant in controlling secondary creep. Annealing Effect. The observed dependence of creep flow on grain size suggested that a further contribution to creep resistance would result when the alloys were annealed to effect a coincidence between grain width and interfiber spacing, see Fig. 3(b). ~eiides creating an immediate barrier to grain boundary movement, annealing offered the possibility of providing increased structural stability by eliminating many high-energy, mobile grain boundaries.= To test this hypothesis, specimens from the Zn-0.16 Ti strips reduced 75 and

By assuming 500 Cal. lost from the hearth by radiation and cooling water per kilogram of pig iron made, a throat-gas temperature of 600° C., and taking the ratio of C02/CO as 0.64, he finds that his diagram would show 0.68 kg. of carbon oxidized per kilogram of pig iron, while Howland gives 0.66 kg. He expresses himself as well satisfied with this test of the accuracy of his theory. CARL SCHOLZ, Chicago, Ill.-Mr. Young was kind enough to' allude to the development of a mine in which I am now engaged. Several months ago the Burlington Railroad decided to open a mine in the field Which they own in Franklin County containing some 15,000 acres .(6070 ha.) of coal, ranging in thickness from 8 to 12 ft. (2 to 3.6 m.). This proposition in itself is attractive to any mining engineer, but with the backing of a large company I saw an opportunity to do some novel work in the construction line, and for several months I have been investigating and working on the problem of developing what I hope will be the largest and best equipped mine in the State of Illinois. The shaft will be sunk at a place where the coal lies at a depth of 600 ft. (182 m.) and conditions both of the surface and of the coal are ideal in every way; the seam is almost level, and we had only 7 ft. (2 m.) of surface clay to go through. We are going to hoist by skips in order to reduce the rope speed. I believe that is a long step in the direction of economy, because we not only double the output of the mine by hoisting the contents of two cars atone time, but we reduce the proportion of dead weight. In our case there will be 20 tons of coal and 18,000 lb. of skip, or 55 per cent. net and 45 per cent. tare. That, of course, necessitates less than half the rope speed for the same tonnage, and we all know that speed means power and power means cost. Skip hoisting permits the use of solid-end gate cars, which is an advantage. The cost of these cars will be in the neighborhood of $250 apiece; They are well built, with roller-bearing wheels of the most up-to-date type, spring draw-bars, and refinements of-that character which are necessary to move the loads most advantageously.

Equilibrium constants for carbon dioxide, defined as the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in the gas phase (dry basis) divided by the mole fraction of carhon dioxitle in the hydrate (dry basis)... were calculated usine the equilibrium constants for methane developed in an earlier paper. INTRODUCTION A series of papers have been written on gas hydrates, giving temperatures and pressures at which hydrates would form.2. 3, 4. 5, 6. 9. 12, 13, 15 Vapor-solid equilibrium constants have been developed for methane, ethane, propane and iso-butane' by which it is possible to compute for a specific gas mixture the temperature and pressure at which hydrates will form. Carbon dioxide is present in many natural gases in concentrations usually from 0.1 to 2.0 per cent. It also forms a gas hydrate with water and presumably enters the solid solution when present with a natural gas which is forming a hydrate. The equilibrium constant giving the ratio of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the gas phase to the concentration in the solid phase is required for including the effect of the carbon dioxide when computing the conditions for hydrate formation. Direct determination of the concentration of carbon dioxide in solid hydrate requires a difficult separation to be made. Therefore, this research resorted to the measurement of the temperature and pressure at which specific mixtures of methane and carbon diox- ide would form hydrates. From the equilibrium constants previously mentioned for methane, it is possible to compute the equilibrium constant for carbon dioxide, without measurement of the composition of the solid phase. Fig. 1 shows the conditions at which methane and carbon dioxide form hydrates. There is, in the southern part of the State of Illinois, a series of deposits of fluorspar and galena in which the former mineral occurs on a scale of magnitude unequalled, so far as I know, in any other part of the world. In June, 1891, 1 had an opportunity of visiting the region of their principal development, near Rosiclare, Hardin county, Ill., and examined such of the mines in the vicinity as were accessible at that time. A very large proportion of the mining shafts that had been sunk in this region were unfortunately abandoned for the time being, and full of water. Moreover, detailed maps of the region are unattainable, no surveys having been made there, apparently, since the original land-surveys' of the early part of the century. In spite of these disadvantages I was enabled, in the few days at my disposal, to ascertain with sufficient accuracy certain facts not hitherto published with regard to these deposits, which seem worthy the attention of the members of the Institute. Before proceeding to a description of the deposits in question, I will give a brief abstract of the little historical and geological information hearing directly or indirectly upon them, which I have been able to find in existing publications. Historical. That the mineral was known to the Indians, is proved by the discovery, in some of the pre-historic mounds of the region,* of fluorspar, shaped into ornaments. The earliest scientific mention of its occurrence is found in the first volume of the American Journal of Science (1818+), which describes specimens obtained in the vicinity of Shawneetown by Mr. Joseph Baldwin. Similar notices appear in the same journal in 1820 and 1821, but without mention of the exact locality. They remark on the fetid odor which characterizes the mineral and its association with galena. During the war period of quicksilver activity there were a number of departures from what may be termed the classical quicksilver metallurgy. Attempts were made to beneficiate low-grade ores by gravity concentration and flotation; mechanical furnaces began to replace the Scott furnace and the vertical coarse-ore furnaces, and condensers of sewer tile and redwood tanks were used in place of the older brick and stone condensing chambers. Other developments that have occurred during the current period of quicksilver activity are mainly in the nature of improvement and further refinement of those started during the war period. Each period of quicksilver activity has been accompanied by the proposal of various new processes, including wet methods for the treatment of quicksilver ores and innovations in furnaces, retorts and condenser equipment. As far as the author knows, nothing of economic significance in the way of "new processes" has been developed. There is in fact no real need for any essentially new process for the treatment of quicksilver ores; the direct furnace treatment is simple and inexpensive. Moreover, with rare exceptions, the quicksilver industry has no complex or refractory ore problems corresponding to those which are receiving more and more attention from metallurgists in other branches of the nonferrous field. Untler these conditions improvements in quicksilver metallurgy must be looked for through the adaptation of current developments in engineering and metallurgy generally to the particular needs of quicksilver practice rather than through the invention of new processes. Preliminary Treatment of Quicksilver Ores At Sulphur Bank, in the treatment of old dump material left by the early operators, wet screening is being used as a preliminary step in concentration ahead of flotation. Power shovels and trucks are used to deliver some 400 tons of ore per day to the lower terminal of a hoist, which in turn discharges the material at the top of the screening plant. Wet screening is carried on in two stages. Depending on the character of the material, 1-in. or 2-in. punched screens are used on the first trommel.

(communication to the Secretary) : Mr Hartman says (p. 4 of the pamphlet) that the penetration of air into the crucible of the blast-furnace " is, of course, a function of the diameter of the nozzle." To this I would emphatically take exception. Fig. 1 represents a vertical ideal section of tuyere, cruciblewalls and charge, immediately at the tuyere, in which the currents of air are represented, both in quantity and in direction, by the tortuous black-lines emanating from the nozzle-opening and passing through channels of the least resistance. As an electric current, flowing by various conductors to a common point, is carried in quantity inversely as the resistance of those conductors, so here the air ramifies through the most open cavities or channels, relatively little of it passing where the resistance due to fine materials is great. This figure represents the course of currents in the vertical plane only. As a matter of fact, they pass away in every plane, as opportunity offers. The effect of blocking or decreasing the area of the nozzleopening would certainly only decrease the quantity of air entering by that particular tuyere, without assisting penetration. The large channels (b, b, Fig. 1, for example) would still carry the larger part of the air, while again the smaller channels (a, a, a) would continue small and take no larger percentage of the air than before. These channels momentarily change, however, with the slow descent of the coke. Further on (p. 5), Mr. Hartman describes the dispersive effect of a single lump of fuel. He has only to conceive the entire spaces before the tuyere-nozzles as filled with such lumps, in order to parallel the condition of affairs I have just explained. It is where the large pieces of the charge come down, that the mass is the most open, and the blast passes most freely. On the other hand, wherever the fine ore collects combustion proceeds slowly, because of the smaller supply of air. The

ANNOUNCEMENT was made in the spring of 1926 that the Boston & Maine R. R. Co. had contracted with the well known German steelmakers, Messrs. Fried Krupp, for the manufacture of 15,000 tons of basic open-hearth steel rails at the Rheinhausen Works, for delivery to Boston, Mass. The manufacture of rails in the United States has for many years been almost a national pride, and as this feeling is chiefly the result of a long-time liberal and consistent patronage of, American rails by American railroads, it is not strange that this somewhat unusual announcement should arouse more than ordinary interest. Since the end of the World War, the importation of foreign rail has been fairly large, principally because the newly created economic conditions have rendered some American competition more difficult, but the tonnage imported, for the most part, has been made up of small orders for miscellaneous use; and the contract referred to constitutes the largest single importation of foreign rail in over ten years. In 1915, the Algoma Steel Co. of Sault Ste. Marie, Canada; supplied the Illinois Central R. R. with 30,000 tons of rails,1 and various other American roads with smaller amounts. In 1902, 1903 and 1904, large tonnages of rail from abroad were purchased, the Louisville & Nashville R. R. alone obtaining 30;000 tons from German mills. It is the object of this paper, to present, in what is believed to be a new and concise form, figures showing the production and consumption of rails in the United States, and to record some of the testing and inspection results of the recent Krupp rails; also, to direct attention to two quite unique departures from American practice that were regular features of the Krupp process and which are worthy, it is thought, of careful study.

IN order properly to evaluate the data related to geomagnetic surveys, it is highly desirable to have all the available information concerning the magnetic properties of the, involved media. This is true of surface as well as subsurface formations and becomes of increasing importance as advancement in instrumental and interpretative technique permits the analysis of relatively slight magnetic reflections of buried masses. Since the magnitude and areal distribution of the usually complex resultant magnetic field at the surface of the earth is a function of the susceptibility1 of the involved matter, it necessarily follows that susceptibility determinations will afford valuable data for geophysical correlation. The present method was developed to meet the need for routine analysis of specimens in the geomagnetic laboratory where it was felt that general utility, ruggedness, ease of manipulation and reproducibility of results was of greater importance than extreme sensitivity.

THE conventional wire saw, introduced in the slate district of Pennsylvania by the Bureau of Mines in 1927, and used thereafter with remarkable success, consists of a three-strand steel cable having a diameter of 3/1 6 or 1/4 in. The equipment, methods used, and accomplishments have been described in previous reports.1-7 Similar wire saws have been used extensively in Europe, in quarries and in shaping blocks and slabs. During the period 1932-1937, competition in European marble quarries was keen, prices were declining, and orders were not abundant. When orders were received, there was generally an urgent call for speedy delivery. Because of the diversification of demands, it was impossible. to maintain in stock marbles of the color, size, and thickness called for,, therefore the material generally had to be fabricated after the order was received. The wire saw enabled stone mills to fill. such, orders promptly. With skillful handling, 7/8-in. slabs could be cut accurately and rapidly with this equipment. It was found, however, that, as the three-strand wire became worn, the cutting speed dropped rapidly and the cut became less accurate. To overcome these difficulties the junior author of this paper, after much experimentation, developed a new type of wire consisting of a single ribbon-shaped strand, twisted as shown in Fig. I. To ensure straight sawing, the twist of the ribbon is reversed from right to left and vice versa every 25 ft. The reversal of the [ ] twist is shown in Fig. 2. This is not a new feature; it has been used to advantage with the three-strand wire both in Europe and America for several years. However, some difficulties arise in splicing the three-strand reverse-twist wire, and the claim is made that cutting is less accurate as the wire becomes worn. At that time no attempt was made to develop metallographic evidence of the coexistence of two phases in the iron-rich solid solution at temperatures between 900" C. and 1400" C.

WITH the acquisition of the Nichols Copper Company ' and the development of the large Copper Products manufacturing and selling organization, the Phelps Dodge Corporation had attained two of its important goals. But at that particular time both its immediate and long-range prospects were giving the company serious concern. The financial panic that began late in 1929 was growing worse instead of better. Neither raw materials nor finished products could find a market. In 1932 the price of copper fell to the almost unprecedented figure of four and eight tenths cents a pound. Domestic production of copper in the United States was further threatened by a large low-cost output from the mines of Africa and the Andes. Canadian copper mines, with their large yield of other valuable metals from the same ores, added to the difficulties of the American companies. After a hard-fought campaign, however, the producers of domestic copper finally induced Congress to levy a duty of four cents a pound on copper imported into the

Enrollment in the mineral engineering departments at many of our universities has decreased substantially over the past few years, a fact that is due to a number of reasons. Some of the more obvious reasons are: (l) lack of student stimulation in the classroom, (2) absence or lack of salesmanship by the mineral industry faculty, (3) minimal financial support of academic programs by industry (some companies have been very generous, while others have given nothing), (4) failure of some companies to utilize the engineering backgrounds of personnel, (5) salary in some instances, and (6) job location in some in- stances. As some of these problems have been recognized, appropriate steps have been taken to correct them. Only one of the reasons listed is not subject to change, and that is job location. One university' that found itself in the position of reduced enrollment in the mineral industries is the University of Utah. Since the author was in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at that university, and since data on enrollment and scholarship support have been published by that department, that department will be used for illustrative purposes to show the effect that active scholarship incentive can have on undergraduate enrollment. As Fig. I shows, there were approximately 35 total undergraduates in the department in 1966. Extrapolation of the freshman line from 1965 to 1966 (and previous years) suggested that no freshmen would be enrolled in metallurgical engineering by 1969 unless something drastic were done to alter the trend. In the Spring of 1966, 20 scholarships were offered to high school seniors as an incentive to enroll in metallurgical engineering. These scholarships were financed from a private endowment to the department, but at the present time industry is also contributing to the program. With these incentives, the department essentially doubled its total enrollment in three years, as shown in Fig. 1. Cornparison of this figure with the number of students on scholarships (Fig. 2) shows a direct correlation between undergraduate enrollment and the number of students on scholarship support.

THE second session on geophysical prospecting at the February meeting of the Institute was a discussion of the mining law and the bearing of the new method of search on location of claims and assessment work thereon. Allen H. Rogers was chairman of the meeting, which he opened by reviewing the present law and the proposed changes. W. R. Ingalls commented (by letter) on the Arentz bill, as introduced into the House of Representatives in 1921 and the need for revision of the present mining law. L. W. Douglas explained (by letter) the bill that he introduced and which has been passed by the House. SAMUEL S. ARENTZ, Nevada: It is my opinion that if the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is to sell this proposition to the people in the West, they have to sell it to the lawyers, because, after all, they are heard loudly when it comes to speaking in Congress. One man tells the other, "This thing is a vicious piece of legislation"; it might not be, but they will pass it on if it affects them. If the Institute would impress on the people affected that we need a re-codification of the mining law and that such is necessary along certain lines; that things have changed during the past decade or two, so today instead of doing our prospecting alone through the sinking of a shaft, through a discovery that may be seen, we are now moving on to more modern means of discovery through geophysics, through the churn-drill, through geology, through geological inference, I think we could get somewhere.

About a year and a half ago, Mr. Morris, an engineer of the Solvay Process Company, was sent to Belgium and France to study the manufacture of coke in the Semet-Solvay ovens, which were in operation at Havre. With complete plans of construction and a good understanding of the methods of running the ovens, he returned to Syracuse. Work on twelve Semet-Solvay ovens was immediately begun. These ovens, with plant for crushing and washing coal, and the necessary condensers, scrubbers, and concentrator for the recovery of the byproducts are nearly finished, and will soon be in operation. As the work approached completion it became necessary to determine what coal should be used. Accordingly, a chemical investigation of the various bituminous coals was made. I. Investigation of Coals. The samples of coal taken for analysis were: I. A sample of Reynoldsville coal that had been exposed to the weather for a year; 11. Reynoldsville coal taken from a car direct from the mine; 111. This paper gives a short account of plastic deformation as observed in single crystals of zinc, zinc having been selected for the experiments described herein because the phenomena are comparatively so simple and can be studied throughout such a wide range. It is hoped that the paper will serve to show the type of information which studies of single crystals afford and will contribute toward the solution of the general problem of metallic behavior. PRODUCTION OF ZINC SINGLE CRYSTALS The method of Czochralski,1 as modified by vow Gomperz,l was used to produce the crystals studied. The equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Molten zinc is held in a crucible at a temperature which is not far above its melting point, as measured by a pyrometer. A lava disc floats on the melt, and is provided with a central hole about 1 min. in diameter. A glass tube, drawn into a capillary at the lower end, is suspended from a string which is wound up by an electric drive at the speed desired. At the start, the glass capillary is let down into the melt and the hoist is started. The capillary brings up a small quantity of molten metal with it to a point just above the lava disc. At this point, a jet of hydrogen cools it and causes it to crystallize, with the result that a -small crystal forms. As the hoisting is continued, more molten metal is drawn up, in turn to be solidified by the jet of hydrogen. This additional metal continues the growth of the crystal already formed, and a long, cylindrical crystal results. The speed of hoisting used was generally between 0.1 and 0.5 mm. per sec., and the crystals were from 4 to 6 in. long and about 1 mm. in diameter. By varying the conditions, crystals of quite different orientations were obtained and were used in the study of the phenomena to be described.

The senior author of this paper, while in Colorado on other official business, made a trip to the Cripple Creek gold-mining district to get more data than are at present available regarding the composition of the gas that issues from the rock into the mines of the district. This was done at the suggestion of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau of Mines. There are -many questions of interest and importance in connection with the ventilation of the mines in the Cripple Creek district, such as the menace to life and mining of a suffocating gas entering the mines from the rock, the danger due to powder smoke (from blasting operations), and danger of continued inhalation of rock dust by the miners. This report confines itself to the first problem, the gas from the rock, and principally to one phase of this question, the composition of the gas and its effects on men and lights. A more thorough study of this and other ventilation problems is planned. That the rock gas is a real menace is shown by the fact that miners (variously estimated from 25 to 50 by different persons interviewed) have been killed by it in the 25 years that mining has been vigorously carried on at Cripple Creek. Many men have had narrow escapes from death, some of them having been incapacitated for days. In addition, much loss of time results because at certain periods of the year or on certain days it is impossible to enter some workings. At a few mines, fans force air into the workings, thus supplementing the natural ventilation and much improving conditions, but the improvement is not entirely adequate at all times. 4.3-1. Introduction. DEFINITION OF PRODUCTION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING. Surface mines, like most other mining and manufacturing operations, are usually organized along functional departmental lines. Frequently a mine manager will have his responsibilities divided among production, maintenance, administrative, and engineering functions. Often these are separate departments, but various combinations and variations of these functions can be found in mining companies throughout the world. The production function is responsible for physically removing the ore from the ground, processing it, and shipping the product to its market. The production manager supervises and is responsible for all man-machine systems necessary to extract and process the ore. The maintenance function, which is sometimes included within the framework of production, has the task of insuring the maximum availability and longevity of equipment needed to produce the ore. The administrative function is responsible for accounting, personnel, industrial relations, purchasing, public relations, property, and other related staff functions. For purposes of this chapter, engineering can be described as the function which plans, designs, and supervises construction of physical plant and equipment. In this context engineering includes mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical, and mining engineering. However, another phase of engineering is to prepare plans to insure that the various man-machine components function in an optimum way towards the single most important goal of any enterprise-the maximization of return on the investors' money. Along with the planning, another duty of engineering is to audit all phases of the operation for the purpose of recommending improvements toward this same general goal. These latter two ideas form the basis for a discussion of production engineering and systems engineering. Production engineering is a catchall, problem-oriented function whose duties can include: 1) solution of day-to-day production problems, 2) short-
